Earth Day is an annual celebration that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earths natural resources for future generations . Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 in the United States and on either April 22 or the day the spring equinox occurs throughout the rest of the world. Environmental activism during the 1960s inspired Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson to create a national celebration uniting the environmental movement. With the help of Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard University, Nelson organized the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, educating participants in the importance of environmental conservation . Attended by 20 million people across the United States, the event strengthened support for legislation such as the Clean Air Act (updated in 1970) and the Endangered Species Act (1973). In 1990, Hayes organized a global Earth Day, with more than 200 million participants in more than 140 countries. Earth Day now brings together citizens and activists from around the world to raise awareness and take action regarding such environmental concerns as global warming and renewable energy . Today, the Earth Day Network (EDN) , which brings together more than 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries, supports the Earth Day mission year-round. This mission is founded on the premise that all people, regardless of race , gender , income , or geography , have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment. The Earth Day Network pursues this mission through education, public policy , and activism campaigns. These campaigns bring together more than one billion participants every year, making it one of the largest public, secular events in the world. The Earth Day Network pursues a set of core goals:

• Broaden the meaning of environment to include issues such as climate change , green schools and environmental curricula, green jobs , and renewable energy ;
• Diversify the movement by providing civic engagement opportunities at the local, state, national and global levels around the world. Recognizing that climate change impacts our most vulnerable citizens first and most severely, EDN often works with low-income communities to bring their voices and issues into the movement.
• Mobilize communities by working with partner organizations to provide opportunities for all citizens to become active in the environmental movement.

Earth Days Core Issues This set of goals underlines Earth Day events and actions around the world, which can be organized into ten core issues. Advocacy : Supporters encourage individuals and organizations to meet with elected officials to discuss environmental issues. The online program "Million Acts of Green," for instance, encourages visitors to adopt lifestyle changes such as composting, reducing your carbon footprint, or recycling e-waste.

Climate Change : Supporters raise awareness about climate change , human contribution to those changes, and opportunities to slow the phenomenon . Many Earth Day supporters, for instance, encourage citizens to support the landmark Paris Climate agreement, set to be signed on Earth Day 2016.

Conservation & Biology : Supporters work to conserve the world's biodiversity . On Earth Day 2010, for instance, participants in Sri Lanka planted more than 100 medicinal plants throughout the tropical rain forest at Yagirala Forest Reserve. These plants can be used by local populations and will create habitats for different organisms, enhancing the biodiversity of the island nation. On Earth Day 2010, for instance, teachers and students in the Compostela Valley region of the Philippines participated in a day-long conference. At the conference, they learned about tree planting and care, participated in nature hikes, and presented their environmental action projects to the community. Energy : Advocates support projects that develop renewable energy sources and technologies as means of transitioning off of nonrenewable sources, such as coal and oil . Why April 22? Earth Day falls on April 22. The day was chosen by the original event's organizer, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (for the state of Wisconsin), for simple reasons. Earth Day was an event focused on college students, and April 22 did not interfere with Spring Break, final exams, major religious holidays such as Easter, and was late enough in spring to anticipate decent weather for outdoor activities.

Those were the words of US TV presenter Walter Cronkite as he described the aftermath of the first Earth Day back in 1970.

What is Earth Day and why is it held in April?

Earth Day is an international day devoted to our planet. It draws attention to the environment and promotes conservation and sustainability. Each year on 22 April, around 1 billion individuals across more than 190 countries take action to raise awareness of the climate crisis and bring about behavioural change to protect the environment. In 2020, Earth Day celebrated its 50th anniversary .

What happens on Earth Day?

Participation in Earth Day can take many forms, including small home or classroom projects like planting a herb garden or picking up litter. People also volunteer to plant trees, join other ecological initiatives or take part in street protests about climate change and environmental degradation.

Official Earth Day campaigns and projects aim to increase environmental literacy and bring together like-minded people or groups to address issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss and other challenges . The theme for this year's Earth Day is Invest in Our Planet, and a series of events are planned around the globe, ranging from an attempt at the world's largest dive clean-up across the Hawaiian Islands to an Earth Day Fiesta in Zimbabwe. How did Earth Day begin?

Millions of people took to the streets of US cities and towns on 22 April 1970 in mass protests over the damage being done to the planet and its resources. Amid the demonstrations, protesters brought New York City’s usually bustling Fifth Avenue to a halt, while students in Boston held a “die-in” at Logan Airport. The environmental impact of the post-war consumer boom was beginning to be felt at that time. Oil spills, factory pollution, toxic spills and other ecological threats were on the rise, with little if any legislation in place to prevent them.

The protests brought together people from all walks of American life – accounting for about 10% of the US population – to demonstrate and voice their demands for sustainable change. The Earth Day website calls it the birth of the modern environmental movement.

What led to the street protests in 1970?

Concerned about increasing levels of unchecked environmental destruction, Junior Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin suggested a series of “teach-ins” on university campuses across the US in 1969 to raise awareness of environmental threats. Nelson was joined by Congressman Pete McCloskey and activist Denis Hayes to organize the teach-ins, but the group soon recognized an opportunity to broaden the event’s appeal beyond student populations.

The newly named Earth Day protest events attracted national media attention and support from around 20 million Americans across age and political spectrums, occupations and income groups.

What did the protests achieve?

The Earth Day demonstrations left an indelible mark on US policy. By the end of 1970, the US Environmental Protection Agency came into being and a stream of laws was followed to help protect the environment . These included the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Clean Air Act. Further legislation was soon introduced to protect water quality and endangered species, and to control the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides.

When did Earth Day go global?

Earth Day went beyond the US in 1990. Around 200 million people from 141 countries joined efforts to boost recycling around the world that year, paving the way for the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Climate change poses an urgent threat demanding decisive action. Communities around the world are already experiencing increased climate impacts, from droughts to floods to rising seas. The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report continues to rank these environmental threats at the top of the list.

To limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C and as close as possible to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, it is essential that businesses, policy-makers, and civil society advance comprehensive near- and long-term climate actions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The World Economic Forum's Climate Initiative supports the scaling and acceleration of global climate action through public and private-sector collaboration. The Initiative works across several workstreams to develop and implement inclusive and ambitious solutions.

This “Earth Summit”, as it became known, led to the formation of the UN Convention on Climate Change and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity , along with the Commission on Sustainable Development to monitor and report on the implementation of Earth Summit agreements.

And as citizens were increasingly concerned with corporate impacts on the natural environment, big and small businesses started to feel the pressure to consider sustainability in their practice.

Why is Earth Day important today?

As the millennium loomed, the Earth Day movement turned its attention to the growing reality of the impending climate crisis with a clear message for world leaders and business: urgent action is needed to address global warming.

It’s a message that is even more relevant today. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that without further immediate action to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the world is on course for temperatures 3.2°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. This level of warming would be catastrophic for the planet and all life on it, including humans.

Nature is our biggest ally in fighting the climate crisis and has slowed global warming by absorbing 54% of human-related carbon dioxide emissions over the past 10 years. Yet, we are losing animals, marine species, plants, and insects at an unprecedented rate, not seen in 10 million years . Threats from human activity for food production and ocean use, infrastructure, energy and mining endanger around 80% of all threatened or near-threatened species .

Earth Day has become a leading light in the fight to combat climate change and nature loss. As we celebrate its 53rd anniversary, we must make use of this truly global movement to act, as citizens and governments, as consumers and businesses, and as individuals and communities. Our survival could well depend on it.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and Earth Day 2024 will occur on Monday, April 22. The holiday is now a global celebration that’s sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living and confronting the climate crisis. The brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson and inspired by the protests of the 1960s, Earth Day began as a “national teach-in on the environment” and was held on April 22 to maximize the number of students that could be reached on university campuses. By raising public awareness of pollution, Nelson hoped to bring environmental causes into the national spotlight.

Earth Day History

By the early 1960s, Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environment. Rachel Carson’s 1962 bestseller Silent Spring raised the specter of the dangerous effects of pesticides on the American countryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire on Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River shed light on the problem of chemical waste disposal. Until that time, protecting the planet’s natural resources was not part of the national political agenda, and the number of activists devoted to large-scale issues such as industrial pollution was minimal. Factories pumped pollutants into the air, lakes and rivers with few legal consequences. Big, gas-guzzling cars were considered a sign of prosperity. Only a small portion of the American population was familiar with–let alone practiced–recycling.

Who Started Earth Day?

Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962, Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin, was determined to convince the federal government that the planet was at risk. In 1969, Nelson, considered one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement, developed the idea for Earth Day after being inspired by the anti- Vietnam War “teach-ins” that were taking place on college campuses around the United States. According to Nelson, he envisioned a large-scale, grassroots environmental demonstration “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.”

Nelson announced the Earth Day concept at a conference in Seattle in the fall of 1969 and invited the entire nation to get involved. He later recalled:

“The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air—and they did so with spectacular exuberance.”

Denis Hayes, a young activist who had served as student president at Stanford University, was selected as Earth Day’s national coordinator, and he worked with an army of student volunteers and several staff members from Nelson’s Senate office to organize the project. According to Nelson, “Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

On the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, rallies were held in Philadelphia, Chicago , Los Angeles and most other American cities, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In New York City , Mayor John Lindsay closed off a portion of Fifth Avenue to traffic for several hours and spoke at a rally in Union Square with actors Paul Newman and Ali McGraw. In Washington, D.C. , thousands of people listened to speeches and performances by singer Pete Seeger and others, and Congress went into recess so its members could speak to their constituents at Earth Day events.

The first Earth Day was effective at raising awareness about environmental issues and transforming public attitudes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Public opinion polls indicate that a permanent change in national priorities followed Earth Day 1970. When polled in May 1971, 25 percent of the U.S. public declared protecting the environment to be an important goal, a 2,500 percent increase over 1969.” Earth Day kicked off the “Environmental decade with a bang,” as Senator Nelson later put it. During the 1970s, a number of important pieces of environmental legislation were passed, among them the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Improvement Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Another key development was the establishment in December 1970 of the Environmental Protection Agency, which was tasked with protecting human health and safeguarding the natural environment—air, water and land.

What Do You Do For Earth Day?

Since 1970, Earth Day celebrations have grown. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people in over 140 nations participating, according to the Earth Day Network (EDN), a nonprofit organization that coordinates Earth Day activities. In 2000, Earth Day focused on clean energy and involved hundreds of millions of people in 184 countries and 5,000 environmental groups, according to EDN. Activities ranged from a traveling, talking drum chain in Gabon, Africa, to a gathering of hundreds of thousands of people at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. 

Today, the Earth Day Network collaborates with more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries. According to EDN, more than 1 billion people are involved in Earth Day activities, making it “the largest secular civic event in the world.”

SEATTLE — One day in the fall of 1969, Denis Hayes, a graduate student at Harvard, snagged a 10-minute meeting with Gaylord Nelson, a United States senator from Wisconsin who had been talking up his idea for a national teach-in about environmentalism.

The visit stretched into a two-hour conversation, and at the end of it Mr. Hayes had a job. He ended up organizing the original Earth Day on April 22, 1970 .

Mr. Hayes has participated in many other Earth Day events in the years since, so it should be no surprise that he is chairman emeritus of Earth Day 2020, which has shifted, in the time of coronavirus, to the digital realm . It has also come to focus on another threat to the planet, climate change , which 50 years ago “was not part of the national discussion,” Mr. Hayes said.

In recent days, Mr. Hayes has drawn a connection between the coronavirus and climate change, and the failure of the federal government to effectively deal with either one. In an essay in the Seattle Times , he wrote that “Covid-19 robbed us of Earth Day this year. So let’s make Election Day Earth Day.” He urged his readers to get involved in politics and set aside national division. “This November 3,” he wrote, “vote for the Earth.”

The power of activism to spark political change was at the core of the first Earth Day. In 1970 some 20 million people across the United States, from thousands of schools, colleges, universities and communities, took part in demonstrations, marches, environmental cleanups and even a mock trial of automobiles that ended in smashing a car with sledgehammers . New York City closed down parts of Fifth Avenue and 14th Street for its celebration.

The enormous turnout — one tenth of the population of the United States at the time — and the enthusiasm for change led to unprecedented action from the federal government. Congress passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, and President Richard M. Nixon, a Republican, created the Environmental Protection Agency.

“This is the major thing that turned Nixon around, scared the hell out of him,” said Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate, in a recent interview. On that first Earth Day, he spoke at the University at Buffalo.

And while Mr. Nader fully credits Senator Nelson, one of the nation’s leading environmentalists at the time, with providing the inspiration that brought Earth Day about, he said, Mr. Hayes and his young colleagues “provided the perspiration.”

Early last month, at a Mexican restaurant in Seattle, the first United States hot spot of the coronavirus outbreak , Mr. Hayes worked around the no-handshaking protocol with a good-natured, mock-courtly bow. He still has the intense stare of the young man in those long-ago photos, but leavened with geniality; the once-dark hair is gray and sparse.

Over several hours of conversation he described the path that took him from small-town Washington state to a personal mission to change the world.

Born in Wisconsin, Mr. Hayes moved with his family at age 6 to Camas, a cozy town by the Columbia River where “everybody knew everybody.” His father worked at the hulking Crown Zellerbach paper mill.

Young Denis could hop on his bike and ride out to spectacular natural landscapes. But environmentally, the town “was an unconstrained disaster” because of the mill. “There was no pollution control of any kind,” he said. “When they discovered that the acid rain was pitting the roofs of automobiles, they put a carwash at the end of the parking lot.” Sore throats from the smoke were common, as were fish kills in the Columbia.

He attended a couple of colleges, reading widely in political and economic theory but without satisfaction. Over the next three years’ time, he traveled across Asia and much of Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, working when he needed money for the next leg and living on peanut butter and oatmeal, and the occasional cup of coffee loaded with all of the sugar and cream on the table. “It’s a whole lot better to look back on than to actually experience,” he said.

One night in the Namib desert, in southwestern Africa, he had what he has called an epiphany after seeing the Etosha Pan, a large hollow where water collects after rains. He marveled at the diversity of animals. “It was a truce,” he said, before “they went back and killed one another as they needed to.”

On a meditative night in the desert, in a state of mind heightened by his “terrible diet” and the desert chill, “It just came together in my mind that we’re animals and we didn’t abide by the principles that govern the natural world,” he said.

He woke up the next morning with a purpose. “I wanted to devote my life to advancing principles of ecology as they apply to human beings and to human communities, to human processes.”

He returned to the United States, attended Stanford and after graduation, gained acceptance to Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. But then came the conversation with Senator Nelson, which Mr. Hayes initially hoped would lead to a class project. He soon dropped out of Harvard and persuaded several classmates to come with him.

They set up shop in ratty offices above a burger stand in Dupont Circle. Early on, the group realized that the Senator’s initial idea for a “teach-in” might not generate much enthusiasm. A progressive ad man, Julian Koenig, who had come up with the “Think Small” ads for Volkswagen and other groundbreaking campaigns, suggested a punchier name: Earth Day. It stuck.

The young Mr. Hayes burned with a fire that clearly charmed a New York Times journalist, Gladwin Hill, who described him as a man who “hops around the country like an ecological Dustin Hoffman, preaching mobilization for environmental reform with sober but evangelical militance.”

Mr. Hayes explained his principles of ecology, of rejecting unbridled growth that strips away the world’s resources, causes pollution and harms people. “The ecological freak is not questioning his share of the pie so much as he is questioning how we’re getting our flour,” he said. “The problem isn’t technological; the problem is a matter of values.”

These days, Mr. Hayes doesn’t use phrases like “ecological freak.” But the fire is still there.

“This was not an anti-litter campaign,” he recalled. “This was talking about fundamental changes in the nature of the American economy.” The cause that drew 20 million people into the streets was, he said, “in some ways much more profoundly radical” than the anti-Vietnam War movement.

Michael B. Gerrard, a Columbia University law professor and director of the school’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, said that “Earth Day was, to the environmental movement, like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly and taking flight.” It changed lives, including his: He was a student at Columbia and covered the first Earth Day for the campus newspaper. He calls that day “one of the steps along the path that made me decide to make a career as an environmental lawyer.”

In the years after the first Earth Day, Mr. Hayes served as a senior fellow at the Worldwatch Institute in Washington, D.C., and President Jimmy Carter made him director of the Federal Solar Energy Research Institute in Colorado, where he promoted solar power from an institution with nearly 1,000 employees and a $130 million budget.

That was when he first heard about climate change, in discussions with scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. “I was asking, ‘How certain are you of all this?’ The answer was, ‘You’re never certain of anything,’ but that their level of certainty was at the 98 percent level.”

He began dovetailing concerns about climate change with his promotion of renewable energy. In January 1980, he delivered an address to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and said that the continued use of fossil fuels would lead to warming of Earth’s atmosphere. That would have “many adverse consequences for life as it now exists,” he warned, such as sea-level rise, inundated coastal farmland and communities, disrupted weather patterns and food production, among others.

Time is short, he warned: “because of the rather long lead time needed to convert from one energy source to another, a decision to reduce fossil fuel use swiftly after the year 2000 would have to be made today.”

Forty years later, the science has only grown clearer. But the effort to address the problem has barely begun.

1980 also brought the election of Ronald Reagan, whose administration slashed the institute’s budget and encouraged Mr. Hayes to seek new employment opportunities. He got a law degree from Stanford, practiced law, taught, and he and his wife, Gail Boyer Hayes, raised their daughter, Lisa.

The younger Ms. Hayes, now a lawyer for a high-tech civil liberties group in Washington, the Center for Democracy and Technology, said that “the values and the culture of the mission behind Earth Day were a part of every day of my childhood,” including their vegetarian meals. One of her childhood friends was surprised by her first meal there: chilled gazpacho and tofu.

“She was not a fan of this dinner,” Ms. Hayes recalled with a laugh. The friend even brought it up in her wedding toast.

In 1992, Mr. Hayes went to Seattle to advise the Bullitt Foundation, which had tens of millions of dollars from the estate of Seattle radio and television pioneer Dorothy S. Bullitt to spend, but no strong sense of purpose. He recommended a focus on investing in regional environmental issues; the board asked if he would like to run the foundation.

He now works on the top floor of Bullitt’s innovative headquarters. Opened on Earth Day 2013, it has been called the world’s greenest building. Costing $32.5 million, it has solar panels that produce more energy than the building uses and blinds that automatically arrange themselves to provide shade and maintain temperature. A geothermal heat pump system provides warmth that radiates from the floors and rainwater collected in a 56,000-gallon cistern is purified for drinking.

“Do you want to see the bowels of the building?” Mr. Hayes asked.The basement holds the composting units for the toilets, which he now admits were not a great idea for a downtown office building. While the composting works as advertised, getting rid of the resulting waste requires trucking it out of town. He is planning to replace the toilets, chalking that problem up to the spirit of experimentation.

Mr. Hayes has announced plans to wind the foundation down by 2024 . He said he has promised his wife, Gail, who is a retired lawyer and author, that they will move “someplace sunny” in his own retirement.

Until then, the foundation is funding the next generation of environmental activism, providing money to climate-change-focused organizations like local chapters of 350.org , the Sunrise Movement and This Is Zero Hour .

Jamie Margolin, a high school student who founded Zero Hour, met Mr. Hayes at his office last summer. She found him serious about her activism and goals, and recalled him saying, “People love Tweeting about activism but they don’t like funding it.”

In that first meeting, she recalled, “I had no clue who this man was. I got home and looked his name up and said, ‘Oh, my God, I’m so stupid!’”

They would get a grant of $100,000 .

The funding, she said, delivers an important message: “The torch has to keep being passed.”

A 2015 study estimated that there are roughly 3 trillion trees on earth, give or take a few million. Since there are around 8 billion people currently living on the planet, the math boils down to roughly 400 trees per person.

Close to 8 million metric tons of plastic go into the ocean annually

According to the U.S. Department of State , roughly 8 million metric tons of plastic go into the world's oceans every single year. Given that most plastics aren't biodegradable, they are likely to linger in the environment for centuries to come. Found in north-central region of the Pacific, the largest accumulation of plastic debris in the ocean is known as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" and is twice the size of Texas.

The earth isn't round

If you've ever taken a history class, you'll know that back in the days of Christopher Columbus, people believed that the earth was flat. Of course, since that time we've learned that our planet is actually round. However, it's not perfectly round, says NASA. Nope, instead, the planet has a bit of a tummy. "The planet bulges around the equator by an extra 0.3 percent as a result of the fact that it rotates about its axis," according to NASA's website. Who knew?

Earth Day was almost called 'Environmental Teach-in'

Senator Gaylord Nelson helped lead the charge to set aside a day to raise awareness for environmental issues. But it was Julian Koenig, a New York advertising writer, who came up with the holiday's name. Koenig reached out to Nelson and offered a few name suggestions. One of his early suggestions was "Environmental Teach-in." Thankfully, it didn't stick.

The U.S. generates 4.9 pounds of waste per person per day

According to the EPA ‘s most recent figures, the total amount of solid waste generated each year falls just shy of 300 million tons and includes things like trash, product packaging, grass clippings, bottles, food scraps and more. Speaking of food, the USDA estimates that 30-40% of the food supply goes to waste or roughly 133 billion pounds, which equates to around $161 billion worth of food.

The EPA was formed because of Earth Day

Democrats, Republicans and people from all walks of life came together to support Earth Day. By the end of 1970, it resulted in the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the passing of significant environmental laws like the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act, among others.

The book 'Silent Spring' was a catalyst for Earth Day

As a marine scientist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Rachel Carson became increasingly concerned over what humans were doing to the world's fragile ecosystems. Although she penned several books, her 1962 release "Silent Spring," a book foretelling the dangers of pesticides and other environmental hazards, really made waves. It sold more than half a million copies and in doing so, raised public awareness and galvanized the environmental movement.

There's a flag for Earth Day

Put your love for the planet on display by flying the unofficial Earth Day flag. The flag, which features an image of Earth as viewed from space, was designed by environmental advocate John McConnell in 1968.

The date was chosen to appeal to college students

In part, April 22 was chosen as the date for Earth Day because it fell squarely between spring break and final exams — an important distinction given that college students were the ones most likely to participate in environmental activism . The theme for Earth Day in 2023, was "Invest in Our Planet, which was meant to remind us that we need to take an active part in protecting our planet. This year, 2024, the theme is "Planet vs. Plastics" and its intent is to raise awareness and advocacy around reducing the production of plastics by 2040.

Earth Day Events Planned at Scranton

In recognition of Pope Francis’s call toward environmental sustainability, The University of Scranton’s Sustainability Office chose “Sustainable Living, Caring for Creation” as the theme for this spring’s Earth Day celebration, which includes nearly a dozen events, many of which are open to the public, free of charge.

The theme is inspired by Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical letter “Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home” and The University of Scranton’s commitment to join a coalition of colleges from around the world to develop, implement and evaluate initiatives around seven ecological goals over a seven-year period to meet the Pope’s call for integral ecology and to gain designation by the Vatican as a Laudato Si’ University .

This year’s Earth Day Essay Contest, open to area students in grades 5-12, has the same theme: “Sustainable Living, Caring for Creation.” Submissions will be accepted until April 5, and winners will be announced at the Evening of Environmental Science event on April 18. The exhibit in the University’s Hope Horn Art Gallery, titled “Our Common Home, University Art Collection,” will highlight 20 th and 21 st century portrayals of scenes and nature associated with eastern Pennsylvania. The exhibit opens April 5, with a Curator’s Lecture in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by an opening reception in the Hope Horn Gallery in Hyland Hall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit will be on display during gallery hours through May 3. The lecture, reception and exhibit are open to the public, free of charge.

The Weinberg Memorial Library will host an Environmental Art Show featuring art of members of the University community in the Charles Kratz Scranton Heritage Room from April 15 to April 24. A lecture by artist Theresa O’Connor on April 15 at 5 p.m. will open exhibit, that can be seen, free of charge, during library hours.

The University will host an Earth Day Fair on April 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Atrium of the Loyola Science Center. The event will feature University student displays as well as, displays from university departments, local non-profits and governmental offices, which will provide information about sustainable practices and products.

The Evening of Environmental Science, set for April 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Atrium of the Loyola Science Center, will feature a display of essays received for the Earth Day Essay Contest, as well interactive environmental displays and activities. Awards for the Earth Day Essay Contest will be presented at the event. The Earth Day Fair and the Evening of Environmental Science are open to the public, free of charge.

For members of the University community, the University will host a day-long Environmental Teach-In, which focuses on topics of environmental sustainability, on April 23, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Loyola Science Center. Earth Day celebrations conclude with a kayaking trip on the Susquehanna River for students on May 5, hosted by the University’s Sustainability Office and the Society for Sustainability and Conservation.

Related Earth Day events that were held on campus prior to the month of April, included a World Water Day event at the DeNaples Center on March 21 that featured interactive activities and displays to help raise awareness of water usage and its importance. From Feb. 19 to 23 the Fresh Food Company held Plant Based Meals Week for University students. Also, on March 5, the film “The Letter: Laudato Si, A Message for our Earth” was screened at the Moskovitz Theater of the DeNaples Center.

Writers Rising Up seeks Earth Day essay contest submissions

Writers Rising Up is seeking submissions for its Paul Gruchow Earth Day Essay Contest. The submission deadline for the essays, which generally focus on writers’ personal experiences with the natural environment, is April 22.

The contest is named for Paul Gruchow, a Minnesota essayist who met with members of Writers Rising Up for an Earth Day reading at the Eden Prairie Water Treatment Plant in 2001. Local writers attending that event included poets Mary Junge, Shelley Getten, and Vicki Pellar Price, as well as Shikka Malaviya and Jan Mosman.

Submissions to the contest should be original, unpublished works of 1,500 words or less. Art and photos can also be included; all work must be original to the submitter.

The winning entry will receive a $25 award and be published on the Writers Rising Up Winning Writers page. Additional details about this contest and others run by Writers Rising Up are found on the organization’s Contests/Submissions page . Several of the contests are named in honor of writers who have made appearances with the local group. The page also has a link to the submission form for the Paul Gruchow Earth Day Essay contest.

Audubon Events Marking Earth Day 2024

Audubon is holding events at the national, state, and local levels marking Earth Day on and around April 22 to celebrate birds and wildlife. Here are some highlights from across the U.S.: 

Los Angeles, CA  Dia de la Tierra at Rio de Los Angeles State Park —April 21, 2024 (9 a.m. – 1 p.m. PT)   Join Audubon Center at Debs Park staff and partners and support ongoing habitat restoration work at Rio de Los Angeles State Park. Volunteers will plant native milkweed, remove invasive weeds, mulch, and water to enhance bird-focused restoration efforts at the park. 

San Diego, CA Earth Justice Summit hosted by the Birdlife Club at San Diego City College —April 18, 2024 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m. PT) Join the San Diego Audubon Society and San Diego City College Birdlife Club for the fifth annual Environmental Justice Summit on campus at San Diego City College (SDCC). This free event will feature speakers covering a variety of environmental issues and ideas. San Diego City College Birdlife Club is part of Audubon on Campus, a program for college students interested in conservation work. 

Greenwich, CT Earth Educators at Greenwich Audubon Center —April 13, 2024 (1 p.m. – 4 p.m. ET) Join Greenwich Audubon volunteers for a family day to learn all about our changing climate. During our service days, teens have been planning different activity stations for this event to teach community members and families about how climate change impacts our local community ecosystems as well as birds, both permanent residents and migrating.

Maitland, FL   Earth Day Birdathon Events at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey —April 20 and 21, 2024   Participate in the Earth Day Puzzle Trail as part of Audubon Florida's Birdathon event. In this escape-room experience, participants solve puzzles and clues focused on raptor conservation and qualify to win fun prizes, including a meet-and-greet with a raptor ambassador. 

Naples, FL  Celebrate Earth Day at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary —April 22, 2024 (8 a.m. – 5 p.m. ET)  Visit Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary for an Earth Day celebration with a bird walk, climate change solutions presentation ,   film screening, ukulele performances, a Happiness Workshop (separate registration required) and more. Discounted admission for all: $8 for adults, $4 for children, and free for members. 

Florissant, MO  Earth Day Celebration at Little Creek Nature Area —April 20, 2024 (8 a.m. – Noon CT)  Join Audubon Center at Riverlands staff for the yearly Earth Day event at Ferguson-Florissant School District’s Little Creek Nature Area. This event will feature various outdoor activities including barnyard animals, puppet shows, crafts, live music, birds of prey, nature walks and much more. You can find Audubon down at the pond for some pond exploration! 

New York, NY  Earth Day Festival at Carl Schurz Park —April 20, 2024 (1 p.m. – 4 p.m. ET)  Join NYC Audubon and the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy for an Earth Day celebration with fun and educational activities, and of appreciating this beautiful planet.  

Oyster Bay, NY  Service Day at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center —April 21, 2024 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m. ET)  Take part in a day of volunteer conservation action with a variety of activities, including a bird watch and garden and plant ID walk. 

Syracuse, NY Earth Day Cleanup with Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps —April 20, 2024 (10 a.m. – Noon ET) Join the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps for the 5th Annual Earth Day Cleanup Event. Participants will pick up debris along the Onondaga Lake shoreline at Harbor Brook and about birds, other wildlife, and the importance of healthy habitats in the Onondaga Lake watershed. The Corps was founded in 2012 by Honeywell in partnership with Montezuma Audubon Center and Onondaga Audubon and is now an Audubon New York program.

Savannah, NY MARSH! Honeysuckle Popping at Montezuma Audubon Center —April 20, 2024 (9 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET) Volunteer with Montezuma Audubon Center and DEC staff to restore bird habitat by removing invasive bush honeysuckle in the forest habitat. Lunch will be provided by the Friends of Montezuma.

Audubon, PA  Earth Day Native Plant Sale at the John James Audubon Center —April 21, 2024 (Noon – 4 p.m. ET)  Enjoy this Earth Day celebration with a wide selection of native plants from local nurseries available to purchase. Experts will be on hand to help you select plants that work best in your space. From pollinator plants to rain gardens, you’ll find something for all your bird- and eco-friendly gardening needs.

San Antonio, TX  Earth Day Weekend Free Entry Days at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center —April 20 and 21, 2024  Get outside in celebration of Earth Day and enjoy free entry at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. Take home native pollinator plant educational material to learn what plants would work best in your space.
