Mother Teresa Quotes About Happiness

Standart top banner.

Mother Teresa quote: Be happy in the moment, that's enough. Each moment is all we need...

Be happy in the moment, that's enough. Each moment is all we need, not more.

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.

God never sends us more than we can handle.

One filled with joy preaches without preaching.

It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.

Let us not use bombs and guns to overcome the world. Let us use love and compassion. Peace begins with a smile-smile five times a day at someone you don't really want to smile at at all-do it for peace. So let us radiate peace...and extinguish in the world and in the hearts of all men all hatred and love for power.

Everybody has something good inside them. Some hide it, some neglect it, but it is there

A joyful heart is like the sunshine of God's love, the hope of eternal happiness.

75 Most Inspirational Mother Teresa Quotes

Artistic representation of Mother Teresa in a colorful mosaic style, with a beaming smile and her signature white headscarf edged with blue stripes.

Mother Teresa — a figure synonymous with compassion and dedication to the poorest of the poor — left an indelible mark on the world through her humanitarian work.

Her life — dedicated to serving the sick, the destitute, and the dying in the slums of Kolkata, India — earned her the Nobel Peace Prize and the admiration of people worldwide.

Known for her quotes on love, service, and charity, Mother Teresa’s words continue to inspire acts of kindness and selflessness.

However, her legacy is not without controversy. Critics have pointed out aspects of her work and her organization’s operations that spark debate on the nature of sainthood, the ethics of suffering, and the complexities of charity. These discussions add a layer of nuance to her figure, reminding us that heroes are also human — with actions and decisions that can be examined from multiple perspectives.

Despite these critiques, Mother Teresa’s quotes capture universal truths about compassion, humility, and the importance of doing small things with great love.

In this article, we’ve selected quotes that reflect the depth of her commitment to helping others — offering insights into a life lived in service to humanity.

Her words serve as a call to look beyond ourselves and contribute, in whatever way we can, to the welfare of others…

Part 3. Conclusion

mother teresa quotes need silence able touch souls wisdom

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.

After all these beautiful quotes by Mother Teresa, if you still find it hard to be faithful, keep in mind that she, herself, had difficulties too sometimes.

Where is my faith? Even deep down … there is nothing but emptiness and darkness. … If there be God – please forgive me. When I try to raise my thoughts to Heaven, there is such convicting emptiness that those very thoughts return like sharp knives and hurt my very soul.

One of the great humanitarians of our age, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, as she was called after her canonization in 2016, showed the world how to love and serve the less fortunate around us. Small and diminutive in size and stature, she made up for it in her zeal and dedication to the people she loved and helped—most often those who were seen as outcasts and marginalized by their communities. When the devoted nun of Albanian descent won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, she donated her entire cash prize to the poor in India.

But we can do small things with great love.” — Mother Teresa

In her long life, she touched the lives of millions through her presence and acts of charity, as well as the truths she shared from her experience of faith. As someone who embodied the servant nature of Christ, being his hands and feet to others, she left us with enduring wisdom to inspire our faith. In her words and especially in her actions, we see that a life of love—however big or small, quiet or recognized—is significant, meaningful, and powerful.

Reflect on these quotes by Mother Teresa throughout your day-to-day. Share one in a note to a friend to encourage them. Or print and display one in your home or office cubicle to keep her wisdom top of mind. After all, the small things you do in love today can and will change tomorrow.

77 Inspiring Mother Teresa Quotes On Life And Love

' src=

Mother Teresa was an inspiration to millions of people all over the world because she dedicated her life to helping others.

She was greatly admired for the way in which she lived her life, selflessly sacrificing herself to her mission. In doing so she became an iconic symbol for charitable work around the world.

The love and compassion she showed to people of all faiths won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, all of which she donated to the poor.

While Mother Teresa found her inspiration from Catholic teachings she gained widespread affection and admiration from her adopted home of Calcutta, India by respecting local traditions and faiths and always placing humanity over religious divisions.

In 1950 she set up the charitable organisation the Missionaries Of Charity, and by 2013 that had grown to over 700 missions in 130 countries, providing soup kitchens, centers for family assistance, orphanages, schools, hospitals and homes for people with diseases such as leprosy, AIDS and tuberculosis.

Top 20 Most Inspiring Mother Teresa Quotes

Mother Teresa was an inspiration to countless millions for her lifelong devotion to the neediest and most vulnerable of the world. The selflessness and sacrifice with which she lived her own life made her an international symbol of charitable work, and the love and compassion she showed the destitute of all faiths won her a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, which she donated entirely to the poor.

Mother Teresa found her inspiration in Catholic teachings, but won widespread affection and admiration in her adopted home of Calcutta, India by respecting local customs and beliefs, and always placing our common humanity above religious divisions. By 2013, the charitable organization she had set up, the Missionaries of Charity, had spread to 700 missions in 130 countries, providing soup kitchens, centers for family assistance, orphanages, schools, hospitals and homes for people with diseases such as leprosy, AIDS and tuberculosis.

In 2016, Mother Teresa was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa.

We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.

mother teresa quotes - If you judge people, you have no time to love them

What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.
I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.
I want you to be concerned about your next-door neighbor. Do you know your next-door neighbor?
I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, ‘How many good things have you done in your life?’ rather he will ask, ‘How much love did you put into what you did?
God doesn’t require us to succeed, he only requires that you try.
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.
Joy is a net of love in which you can catch souls.
Never travel faster than your guardian angel can fly.
Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.

Karen Danao

Hi, I’m Karen , a content curator and writer for Quote Ambition; I’m also a marketing and advertising professional. Beyond the keyboard and the screen, I’m someone who’s out to enjoy every bit that life has to offer!

Poetry, philosophy, history, and movies are all topics I love writing about! However, my true passion is in traveling, photography, and finding common ground to which everyone from different cultures can relate.

With the many places I’ve been to, I found that love, inspiration, and happiness are some things that bring people together. No matter how different we are on the outside, I’m a true believer that our emotions don’t lie; if you dig deep into our psyche, we’re all the same inside.

This belief was further amplified when I joined Quote Ambition. Through the quotes I’ve read, collected, organized, and written about, I found that humans are resilient, creative, and compassionate.

We take from each others’ hearts and courage, and it’s through our individual experiences that we learn how to rise above our challenges and pain. In so many ways, Quote Ambition is a platform that allows people from all over the world to gain the inspiration they need anytime, anywhere!

A selfless humanitarian, these Mom Teresa quotes will need to make you be a greater individual after studying them.

Mother Teresa is admired by thousands and thousands due to her charitable work and the lives she touched.

A few of her views had been controversial, however, nobody can deny the ability of her phrases and actions for Mother Teresa quotes on life happiness!

Mother Teresa quotes on life happiness

A life not lived for others is not a life. Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary If you judge people, you have no time to love them. I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love. We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. We have not come into the world to be numbered; we have been created for a purpose; for great things – to love and be loved. Life is an adventure, dare it. If we pray, we will believe; If we believe, we will love; If we love, we will serve. Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway. Without patience, we will learn less in life. We will see less. We will feel less. We will hear less. Ironically, rush and more usually mean less. If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are. I try to give to the poor people to love what the rich could get for the money. No, I wouldn’t touch a leper for a thousand pounds; yet I willingly cure him for the love of God. God made the world for the delight of human beings– if we could see His goodness everywhere, His concern for us, His awareness of our needs: the phone call we’ve waited for, the ride we are offered, the letter in the mail, just the little things He does for us throughout the day. As we remember and notice His love for us, we just begin to fall in love with Him because He is so busy with us — you just can’t resist Him. I believe there’s no such thing as luck in life, it’s God’s love, it’s His.
Your true character is most accurately measured by how you treat those who can do ‘Nothing’ for you. The success of love is in the loving – it is not in the result of loving. Of course, it is natural in love to want the best for the other person, but whether it turns out that way or not does NOT determine the value of what we have done. Do you want to do something beautiful for God? There is a person who needs you. This is your chance. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight; build it anyway. Love to be real, it must cost—it must hurt—it must empty us of self. At the end of life, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in. Jesus said to love one another. He didn’t say love the whole world. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your eyes, kindness in your face, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greetings. We are all but His instruments who do our little bit and pass by. I believe that the way in which an act of kindness is done is as important as the action itself. Where There Is Love, There Is God: A Path to Closer Union with God and Greater Love for Others. There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things that we could use.

Mother Teresa quotes on life happiness

Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service. Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared for, for being wanted, for having someone to call their own.
Love is a fruit in season at all times and within reach of every hand. Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier. May God break my heart so completely that the whole world falls in. Do extraordinary things with love. Be faithful in little things, for in them your strength lies Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you. I know I am touching the living body of Christ in the broken bodies of the hungry and the suffering. If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one. We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon, and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls. Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service. Live simply so others may simply live. Love is not patronizing and charity isn’t about pity, it is about love. Charity and love are the same — with charity you give love, so don’t just give money but reach out your hand instead. When you don’t have anything, then you have everything.

mother teresa quotes

Here are the 15 best Mother Teresa quotes on love, happiness, and giving back.

1. Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.

People know the price of everything but the value of nothing. Most people value materialistic things too much and don’t appreciate the people in their lives. While in reality, the love from those people actually helps them believe in themselves and pursue materialistic goals. What a thought-provoking Mother Teresa quote!

2. We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.

Just because we are not doing a billion dollar in revenue in business every year doesn’t mean we don’t matter. Greatness is always a result of team effort. Nobody has ever accomplished great things alone.

3. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.

The big opportunities we get in life are the result of the small choices we make every day. The small choices to wake up early, sacrifice short-term temptations for long-term gains – small choices become the foundation of the bigger opportunities that unfold.  This is a great Mother Teresa quote as it inspires us to value the little things.

4. Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

Life is much shorter than we think it is. So don’t fill your heart with hate , anger, or regret. Just smile and be happy in the here and the now. As Robin Williams said, engineering, business, medicine and the likes are necessary to sustain life. But love, art, poetry, romance  – these are the things we really stay alive for.

5. Our life of poverty is as necessary as the work itself. Only in heaven will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love God better because of them.

Some people discard religion saying that only the poor need it. Why be so skeptical? Only because of their faith in God do the poor survive. Maybe poor people are a sign that God is alive.

6. I know God won’t give me anything I can’t handle. I just wish he didn’t trust me so much.

Every struggle that you face is there because you are meant to fight it and become stronger. How, you’d ask? What’s the proof? Well, the proof is that there are many people in the world who’ve faced worse circumstances than you and came out stronger on the other side with valuable lessons for others.

7. I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.

We often hate our weaknesses, fears, and insecurities. But if we embrace them, understand them, we’ll be better able to rise above them. This is an inspiring  Mother Teresa quote because it teaches us to embrace our flaws.

8. It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.

Some people do charity because they’ve heard that people who give get more in return. Charity is when you give from the heart and not with an expectation to get something in return.

9. I’m a little pencil in the hand of a writing God, who is sending a love letter to the world.

Whether you believe it or not, there’s a higher power in this world. In the end, we all are working towards the same purpose – to help and heal others.

10. Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared for, for being wanted, for having someone to call their own.

No amount of money can compare to the warmth of a mother’s love and affection for her children. Even the likes of Bill Gates and Richard Branson will feel incomplete without their families. This is a magnificent Mother Teresa quote as it proves money’s not everything.

11. What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.

Change starts with you. Instead of giving to the poor and the needy, why not start with your own family. Show your family how much you love them – write them letters, take them to dinner dates – one day they won’t be there anymore.

12. I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.

We can not change the world alone. But we can create a ripple, and when many ripples combine, they can transform the world forever. All big revolutions in history started from such ripples – mob lynchings, discrimination in buses, and so on.

13. I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.

When we join forces with others, we are able to go far than we can ever imagine. If you’re all alone, the journey will be lonely and you will get tired. This is an insightful  Mother Teresa quote as it affirms our faith in unity and togetherness.

14. Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.

Greatness already exists in you. It is your own creativity that can create million dollar businesses or extraordinary ideas that can transform communities and sometimes an entire country. Spend time in introspection to discover who you are, but more importantly, take action to realize your dreams.

15. The trees, the flowers, the plants grow in silence. The stars, the sun, the moon move in silence. Silence gives us a new perspective.

Spend some time in silence every day. Silence will give you perspective, insights, wisdom, vision, and it will reveal your true desires.

41 Best Mother Teresa Quotes on Loving, Serving, and Giving

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” Mother Teresa

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, ‘How many good things have you done in your life?’ rather he will ask, ‘How much love did you put into what you did?” Mother Teresa

Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it.

Smile at each other. Smile at your wife, smile at your husband, smile at your children, smile at each other – it doesn’t matter who it is – and that will help to grow up in greater love for each other.” Mother Teresa

Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts.

Our life of poverty is as necessary as the work itself. Only in heaven will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love God better because of them.” Mother Teresa

I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I know that prayer changes us, and we change things.

In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence.” Mother Teresa

There are many people who can do big things, but there are very few people who will do the small things.

Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work.” Mother Teresa

51 Motivational Mother Teresa Quotes to Empower You (Kindness & Compassion)

At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.” Mother Teresa

Jesus said love one another. He didn’t say love the whole world.

Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.” Mother Teresa

Never travel faster than your guardian angel can fly.

It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger than to relieve the loneliness and pain of someone unloved in our own home. Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start.” Mother Teresa

I do not pray for success, I ask for faithfulness.

I believe there’s no such thing as luck in life, it’s God’s love, it’s His.” Mother Teresa

Your true character is most accurately measured by how you treat those who can do ‘Nothing’ for you.

The success of love is in the loving – it is not in the result of loving. Of course it is natural in love to want the best for the other person, but whether it turns out that way or not does NOT determine the value of what we have done.” Mother Teresa

Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand.

There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things that we could use.” Mother Teresa

Do you want to do something beautiful for God? There is a person who needs you. This is your chance.

Love is not patronizing and charity isn’t about pity, it is about love. Charity and love are the same — with charity you give love, so don’t just give money but reach out your hand instead.” Mother Teresa

When you don’t have anything, then you have everything.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.” Mother Teresa

Given honored in the Catholic Church as  Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016, Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity (a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor).

Since she was twelve years old, Teresa knew that she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ one day.

As soon as she turned 18, She left her parental home in Skopje to go to Dublin, Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto . After a few months of training, she took her initial vows as a nun on 24 May 1931 and was sent to India for missions where she lived most of her life.
