These homes not only cater to the physical health of the elderly but also to their social needs, offering a community of peers which mitigates the risk of isolation.

However, this shift is not devoid of its disadvantages. The emotional toll on the elderly, who may perceive themselves as abandoned by their families, is significant and cannot be underestimated. This sense of abandonment can deeply exacerbate feelings of loneliness, potentially leading to mental health issues such as depression. Furthermore, the somewhat impersonal nature of institutional care may fall short of addressing the nuanced and emotional needs met by family care, where personal history and emotional bonds play a critical role in the caregiving process, making it a complex dynamic that institutional settings struggle to replicate.

In summary, the shift to institutional care for the elderly, while practical, complicates their emotional and social health. Additionally, the impersonal nature of institutional care can sometimes fail to meet the emotional and psychological needs of the elderly, aspects that familial care inherently addresses.

In summary, the transition of elderly care to institutions, driven by societal and family dynamics, encompasses both benefits and challenges. It underscores the necessity for a balanced approach that combines professional support with emotional care, highlighting the critical roles both families and care homes play in promoting the dignity and well-being of the elderly.

Many elderly people are no longer looked after by their families but are put in care homes or nursing homes. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

It is increasingly common for the families to send their elders to nursing homes instead of taking care of them at home. There are numerous benefits and drawbacks of this trend (1)  ranging from the availability of professional care-takers to feeling of loneliness among elders living in these homes.

1. Note that  ranging from X to Y can be used either for  benefits or for  drawbacks . Not for both. If you’re planning to mention only one benefit and one drawback, I suggest not using this construction. It is better to write:  Though care homes ensure the availability of professional caretakers (Obviously an advantage) , the elderly feel loneliness at these places (Obviously a drawback) .

The old-age homes provide professional medical staff that look s after their (2)  elderly members. Since old age people   they are vulnerable to various health issues due to their weak immune system, medical specialists help them in maintaining a  good health status. For instance, in-house doctors in nursing homes advise the  elderly about not only physical activities but also nutritious diet to develop a strong immunity to diseases   gain superior health , which eventually reduces their risk of getting ill. Additionally, the cooks of care homes are trained to prepare nutritious  food  rich in vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients  , full of nutrition, that helps in strengthening of joints and muscles of the elderly. Nursing homes in the United States, for example, serve all the meals that contain the appropriate amount of protein and vitamins required for a healthy elderly body .  (Instead of writing another example, let us use this space to make a comparison.)  Family members have neither the expertise in taking care of the elderly nor the knowledge to ensure proper diet.

2. Strategically, you should not use  their . Removing it does not impact your sentence’s meaning and gives you the opportunity to use  they in the next sentence to refer to  elderly members in the previous sentence.

Despite the above benefits, there are certain detrimental effects of sending the elderly to nursing homes. Firstly, while they provide excellent service to the members, they are not pocket friendly (extremely expensive)  for many people. A recent report by the Ministry of Health revealed that the average cost of staying in a care home is sixty dollars per person per day. The price is high because they have to meet the high cost of employees, rent, and electricity. Secondly, since older people are living away from their homes   when the elderly live in nursing homes , they do not get to see their family members every day. It generates the feeling of loneliness among   in them, which affects their mental health, and , as a result, their overall well-being suffers.

To conclude, although nursing homes are a costly option for many people, the quality service provided by them is incomparable in terms of medical assistance and nutritious diet. However, ideally,  they should also emphasize on the mental health of elders to make an ideal place for them .  (pronoun referencing mistake.)

IELTS Writing task 2 | Who should pay for elderly care?

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

In Britain, when someone gets old, they often go to live in a home with other old people where there are nurses to look after them. Sometimes the government has to pay for this care.

Who do you think should pay for this care, the government, or the family?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

As the average age of populations is increasing, there are a larger number of elderly people with complex care requirements due to issues like dementia or low mobility. These people can often no longer be cared for by their families, and in Britain, many end up moving into residential care homes with specialist staff. This is clearly expensive, and it is debatable as to whether these costs should be borne by the government or the person’s relatives.

There is a strong argument in favour of families paying for an elderly person’s care in a nursing home. When people have children, they often do so as a form of insurance against old age. By investing their time and money into raising their children, ensuring that they are healthy and receive the best education, parents give their offspring the opportunity to find well-paid jobs. This investment is often made with their own old age in mind, to ensure that their families are capable of providing for them in any eventuality, including care in a nursing home. Consequently, it could be argued that the family should pay for the care of elderly people.

Despite this, there are several important counterarguments. Firstly, not all families are wealthy enough to afford expensive nursing home fees. It would be unreasonable to bankrupt working people for the sake of providing care for elderly relatives who require specialist interventions. More importantly, throughout their careers, people pay taxes to the government, and it is reasonable for them to expect a return for this money. The government should plan properly for the future and budget accordingly, setting money aside for state pension pots and residential care for elderly people whose families can no longer support them. For these reasons, it should be the government’s responsibility to pay for nursing home care.

In conclusion, there is a clear argument that families should pay for the care of their elderly relatives. However, I believe that the government should cover these costs, as not all people can afford to pay for expensive residential care, and the government should save and invest the tax money people pay to provide for them in the event that they need care in their old age.

As in many countries, in the past it was common for families in the U.K. to look after their elderly or infirm relatives. However, times have changed and in today’s world it is just not practical or financially viable for most families to undertake the role of care provider. In my opinion, nursing care should not be the responsibility of the family, and I believe the costs should be met by the government.

People spend the large part of their lives working and as such pay taxes and national insurance contributions to the government. I would argue that if an individual has paid into the system for approximately 50 years, then they should be entitled to a return on their investment, in this case nursing care. If a family needs to bear the responsibility for full-time care for an elderly relative, then one member may have to give up their job to assume the role of care giver. As a result, not only does the individual lose a source of income but their quality of life diminishes.

Unfortunately, most care homes nowadays in Britain are owned by private individuals or entrepreneurs so the monthly fees are considerable. It is now common for many old people to have to sell their own property or use their life savings to pay care home fees. It seems ironic that people who have contributed into the system for so long end up losing everything they worked so hard for only to pay for nursing care. There seems little point, in contributing into a system that does not adequately provide for its elderly despite taking high taxes under the premise of care in the future.

In conclusion, I believe nursing care is a basic human right and therefore should be the responsibility of the government. The U.K. government receives hundreds of billions of pounds in various taxes and national insurance contributions on an annual basis so if people contribute into the system then they should not have to use their personal wealth to finance nursing care.

A visible change of any living organism is getting older. Child, youth, adult and elder are some of the stages in our life. Child and elderly stages are dependent stages compared to other two stages. For both of these situations, a human being needs other’s support.     

While we were children, our parents were there for our supportive role. When the parents became older, definitely their children need to be the supportive role for their parents. This is the role we carry among human beings vice versa. If the parents live with their children only parents will feel safer, attached to family and sharing of love. Unfortunately, many of them attending to works, they do not have time to look after their children neither their parents. In this case, elders could be sending to some a common place where other elders are staying. But payment cannot be made by the government.  

Since it is the responsibility of their family, definitely family needs to pay for caring of their parents. They may not have enough time to take care of their parents. Since the government has employed special people for that, at least those elders’ parents need to be paid by their family.    

For an example, many of the parents were private sector employees and they did not have a monthly pension scheme. But they have only Employee provident fund and employee trust funds. It has been used by the children of the parents in plantation sector of Sri Lanka. Finally, children will neither look after their parents nor elderly parents do not have own money in hand. That is, all advantages utilised from elders. When they become a stage of the dependent, families are trying to escape from their responsibilities. This is a kind of selfish. Paid by the government should be stopped and families should be paid for them.

Especially the children are responsible for looking after the parents; they should definitely pay for the parents and not the government.

There is a new trend of sending older adults to nursing homes or residents’ care homes because families do not look after them. The most significant advantage is that older adults can have much better care in nursing homes. Older adults want to spend their last time with their families, significantly grandchildren, but staying away from them increases their stress rate and affects their mental health is the primary disadvantage.

To begin with, the main benefit of sending older adults to nursing homes and care centres is to take better care of seniors. In nursing, the staff is available for seniors 24/7 to assess their needs. They also track their medical conditions every day and give them proper treatment. Canada is a prime example where so many nursing homes and resident care centres are opened by the Government in every city to take care of older adults regardless if they have families or not.

On the contrary, the most significant disadvantage of doing this is that it leads to severe mental health issues among seniors. Older adults need so much care and attention from their family members. So, sending them away from their family increases stress, and they have long-lasting mental health issues such as temporary memory loss, stress and depression. For example, research showed that older adults living with their families have fewer mental health diseases than seniors in nursing homes.

To conclude, putting seniors in care homes or nursing homes has both pros and cons. The primary advantage is they assist with better facilities and care. On the other side, it also severely affects their mental health.

Model Answer:

In this fast-paced society, many senior citizens are sent to old-age homes because their families are unable or unwilling to take care of them. This essay will discuss the benefits and drawbacks the phenomenon brings.

Sending elderly people to the care home or nursing home is advantageous in some certain aspects. At the advanced age, people are likely to lose motor functions, and therefore carrying out day to day activities becomes an arduous task. In a care home, professional caregivers help them with daily activities. In addition to this, doctors and emergency services are always available in these care homes for elderly people. It is therefore better to send them to an elderly care home as compared to leaving elderly people home alone. On top of this, companionship is a decided advantage. They can spend their time happily with people their own age. So, they never feel alone, thus relieving stress and depression.

On the flip side, the phenomenon also confers a considerable disadvantage. Lack of emotional attachment is an obvious disadvantage. In simple words, when people are not able to see or spend time with persons who are emotionally close to them, there is a good chance that it can negatively impact on their physical and psychological health. Parents have an intensely emotional bonding with their children. So when in the elderly care house, they are unable to see their children, granddaughter or grandson, they will endure distress, which, in turn, will affect them detrimentally. Besides, the cost of taking care of old adults in nursing homes can be expensive due to professional services and fees.

To conclude, this trend brings both advantages and disadvantages. It, however, seems reasonable to assume that old people want to remain close to their family members, and thus family should decide what is best for them.

As lifestyle and family values are changing, many adults consider sending their elderly parents to residential care homes. This decision can be justified to a certain extent since such facilities are well-equipped and provide expert on-site medical care. Yet, I am convinced that in most cases in-home care can increase emotional well-being of a senior person and are a more financially viable option for families.

On one hand, some adults have elderly loved ones who need more help than families can provide themselves. It may be a demanding job, a sick child or a need to relocate to another country that prevent a person from being able to take care of his or her elderly parents. For such families or high-dependency individuals, assisted living facilities offer benefits that are hard to overlook. Indeed, by providing individualised help with daily needs and around the clock medical supervision , care homes can make a significant difference to the lives of the elderly because they make daily routine easier and more enjoyable. This is especially true if a person is physically or mentally disabled, in which case residential care home helps retirees to live a normal life. Another frequently overlooked benefit of adult family homes is a chance to communicate with peers and take part in organised on-site activities and outings. This keeps residents socially engaged and active. It has long been recognised by doctors that loneliness is a major health risk for elderly people who do not have any relatives. Being in a nursing home, the elderly are surrounded by a group of people to build and maintain friendship with, which helps to mitigate senior isolation.

Advantageous care homes may be for some, yet given a choice, most older people want to spend their retirement in their own homes. This opinion is reiterated across nations and a recent research conducted by Australian government shows that ‘ageing in place’ is the preference for more than 75 percent of elderly people. This is mainly due to the fact that moving away from home usually means losing long-term connections and familiar networks. This can be disruptive and, coupled with the need to manage chronic diseases, may undermine an already precarious health of a retiree. Moreover, today most healthcare facilities provide home care packages and research indicates that such an arrangement is the most cost efficient option for individuals. Indeed, the cost of living in a retirement home may be relatively high, putting a strain on an already tight family budget. On top of that, more often than not, residential aged care homes require a bond to secure a place. In Australia, this bond, which is returned to the family once the elderly person passes on, may range from $200, 000 up to one million dollars. Meanwhile, home-based care allows individuals to select services that best suit their needs which makes it a far more affordable option. Thus, not only does in-home care enable individuals to stay with their loved ones but also makes taking care of aging family members more affordable.

To conclude, I believe that circumstances dictate the best solution. If the needs of an old person can no longer be met by their relatives alone , there are benefits to moving to a residential facility where 24 hour clinical care is available. Yet, it is important to understand that for a majority of elderly staying at home, where they can age with dignity and respect, is the most preferable option and it is the one which is more cost-efficient for their families.

In this working from home essay for IELTS you have to discuss whether you think that working from home has more advantages or disadvantages. 

This was a recent question from the test. Take a look at the essay question:

These days, many people have their own computer and telephone, so it is quite easy for them to do their job at home.

Does working at home have more advantages or more disadvantages?

In this essay you have the following task:

• Does working at home have more advantages or disadvantages?

This suggests that there are both pros and cons of working from home as you are asked which there are more of. 

So in your answer to this working from home essay it's better to discuss both but write more about the side that you think there are more of so that the essay content reflects your opinion. 

Try then to think of one reason for one side of the argument and two for the other side.

Organisation

It's usual in academic writing to start with the opinion that is the one you don't support so start with that one.

So based on this, the sample working from home essay is organised as follows:

• Have more control of time ( advantage)
• Loneliness (disadvantage)
• Less influence in the company ( disadvantage) 

So in this case, the writer thinks of course that there are more disadvantages and this should be clearly stated when you give your opinion in the introduction and / or conclusion.

Model Answer:

In the present age it is common for people to work from home because of advances in technology. On balance, I would argue that this has more negative impacts than positive. 

One advantage of working from home is the freedom it provides. Home workers can organise their work around their home life as they can stop or start work as they please, and thus if, for example, they have children, they can easily arrange to take them and pick them up from school. They can also undertake any other tasks that they need to do during the day, such as doing the laundry or shopping, and then finish work later. Overall then, employees have more control over their lives.

Despite these positive factors, however, there are a number of  disadvantages. The first of these is the fact that those who work at home nearly all the time will not be mixing with colleagues. When people are at work, they are always surrounded by others, but at home, an employee is likely to be alone most the time. This may lead to feelings of loneliness due to a lack of interaction. 

Another drawback is the fact that one may have less influence in the company. It is often the case that important decisions arise on the spur of the moment as unexpected issues arise. If an employee is not there, others may have to step in. If this occurs on a regular basis, the employees contribution to the company may decline, meaning a higher probability of getting overlooked for things such as promotion. 

In conclusion, although there are positives and negatives related to working from home, there are more negative impacts. Employees should therefore consider carefully whether working from home is the best choice.

This working from home essay would get a high score as it meets the requirements of the task, which is to discuss the pros and cons of working from home and state which there are more of.

It is also coherent and cohesive, with paragraphing used to good effect and good linking within and between sentences. 

There is a good range of lexis (vocabulary) in the essay and it is used accurately with good collocations. 

There is also a good mix of complex sentences and structures and again the grammatical accuracy is very good.

Investing in Caregivers and Nursing Homes

Re “ Covid Funds Shrinking, Paid Family Caregivers Face Big Cutbacks ” (news article, March 5):

The story of Kacey Poynter and her son, Sonny, puts a spotlight on the precarious state of family caregiving in America. Indiana’s decision to slash funding for its attendant care program threatens to throw families like Ms. Poynter’s into financial turmoil and disrupt the critical care their loved ones require.

Indiana is just the latest state grappling with this issue. The bigger picture reveals a fragmented system struggling under the weight of insufficient federal investment. The influx of federal pandemic funds offered temporary relief, allowing states like Indiana to expand caregiver support programs.

However, family caregivers were hurting far before the pandemic, with 19 million people reporting high levels of emotional stress. Now, as these funds dry up, states and family caregivers are left scrambling.

To ensure that family caregivers can continue providing vital care for their loved ones, Congress must invest in our nation’s care infrastructure. This includes allocating sufficient funding for home- and community-based services, as well as a national paid family and medical leave program.

Additionally, swift implementation of the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers , released by the Biden administration in 2022, is essential to recognize the irreplaceable role that caregivers play in our society.

By investing in family caregivers in Indiana and in every state, we’re investing in a stronger future for all families.

“ Staffing Shortages at Nursing Homes Persist ” (front page, March 1) reinforces the urgent need for the U.S. to develop a coherent approach to the long-term care needs of our aging population.

The pandemic underscored problems in nursing homes that had long been apparent. It also highlighted a longstanding bias toward institutional care for low-income people. Medicaid, the largest source of funding for long-term services, is required to pay for nursing home care, but not for home- and community-based services.

A National Academy of Social Insurance report , “Social Insurance During the Pandemic: Successes, Shortcomings and Policy Options for the Future,” examines the devastating impact of Covid-19 on our nation’s nursing home residents and staffs. Residents of color were disproportionately harmed; their mortality rates were significantly higher than those of white residents.

Congress needs to consider reforms to increase nursing home staffing and improve pay and working conditions. Congress might also consider expanding the Medicare-funded graduate medical education programs to include nurse training. This would help subsidize the cost of such training and address the nursing shortage in nursing homes.

As your article notes, many experts believe that our current approach to long-term care is “fundamentally broken.” It is time for a national solution.

Re “ Watch the Way You’re Driving. Carmakers Are Watching, Too ” (front page, March 12):

I was driving on Interstate 95 in Connecticut recently when a car entering the highway cut me off. I swerved into the left lane, causing my car to fishtail before I regained control. My quick action averted a serious and possibly fatal accident.

That swerve is an example of the kind of noncontextual information that auto insurers are gathering from stealth computer programs in cars like my 2023 Honda Civic. Had I activated “Driver Feedback,” that incident could have led to higher insurance rates for me — instead of for the driver who nearly caused an accident.

In 2024, Big Brother sneaks into the back seat of our cars and watches every move we make. The view from there, however, is not always accurate.

After reading this article, I feel as if I hit a big pothole going 50 miles an hour. I have questions: What is the car company’s cut for providing information to the insurer? If the insurer charges 21 percent more, as happened to a driver quoted in the article, does the car manufacturer get 10 percent of that?

To generate even more revenue, I suggest that car companies force us to watch commercials (like when you’re filling up at the gas station) on the large screens that are in every car now. Enjoy your drive!

Re “ Four Years On, Covid Is Here to Stay ,” by Daniela J. Lamas (Opinion guest essay, March 11):

In her wonderful article, Dr. Lamas beautifully described how she is no longer mortified by Covid but carried its grave lessons forward. As an infectious diseases specialist, I have had similar experiences.

Ignorance is not bliss. To dispel any magical and potentially costly thinking, I want to elaborate on three important lessons.

The first lesson is that science and cooperation prevailed. Let us celebrate and remind ourselves that through mutual respect and a common goal, we were able to tame a deadly virus.

The second lesson is that straightforward and practical infection-control measures such as distancing and quarantining were effective and bought us the time needed to develop a vaccine.

Finally, the third lesson is that the vaccine worked.

Like it or not, Covid is here to stay. We will all need to boldly accept this fact. We need not be fearful, though, because we now understand it and have hopefully learned at least three critical lessons that will prevent Covid from resurging and causing another deadly pandemic.

Can You Create a Diverse College Class Without Affirmative Action?

The Supreme Court effectively ended race-based admissions preferences. But will selective schools still be able to achieve diverse student bodies? Here’s how they might try.

Re “ Can You Create a Diverse College Class Without Affirmative Action? ” (The Upshot, nytimes.com, March 9):

The analysis in your piece shows that highly selective colleges might achieve racial diversity using race-blind approaches if they put extensive weight on socioeconomic factors.

Our own analysis produced similar findings. But we also show that such a change would require a substantial increase in financial aid so that low-income students could afford to enroll. For all but perhaps a dozen or two institutions that have very large endowments, that is likely more than they can muster.

In fact, financial aid already falls $10 billion short of what low-income students at selective colleges need. The logic is simple: Swapping out 35 percent of high-income students for lower-income students, as in one of your simulations, would be very expensive. The newly selected students would need tens of thousands of dollars in financial aid per year.

Increasing the enrollment of lower-income and Black, Latino and Native American students at selective colleges is an important goal that institutions should prioritize. But the cost would be substantial. Insufficient financial aid is a problem across higher education, one that makes using income-based admissions preferences like those described in the Upshot analysis an uphill climb.
