In order to answer this task effectively, we need to ask ourselves some questions beforehand. Below is a checklist which shows you how I think about IELTS writing task 1 chart questions.

  • What kind of chart is it? This is a pie chart and we will, therefore, have to use different language sometimes as compared to other charts. For example, with pie charts, we are more likely to use the language of proportions. See my task 1 grammar guide for more information.
  • What does the title say about the chart? The title gives us all the basic information we need to answer the question. We should read this at least twice to make sure we fully understand the question.
  • What information is contained on both axes? There are no axes in this question because it is a pie chart.
  • What are the units of measurements? The units of measurements are principally ages and percentages. We will, therefore, have to use specific language for percentages.
  • What groups are compared? There are two countries (Yemen and Italy) and three age groups.
  • What is the time period? This is very important because it will affect the tense we use. There are two different time periods- 2000 and 2050. We will, therefore, have to use past and future tenses.
  • What is the most obvious thing that the data shows you? The two most obvious things are that Italy had a much older population than Yemen in 2000 (or Yemen had a younger population) and both populations are predicted to be much older in the future.
  • What is the most important or significant piece of information displayed? The fact that Yemen has a very small proportion of people over 60.
  • Can any comparisons be made? Yes, the observations we made in points 7 and 8 above.
  • Is it a static chart or dynamic chart? There are four static charts but put together and they are dynamic i.e. it changes over time and this will be reflected in the language you use.

I am not suggesting that you write these ten questions out in the exam, it would take too long, however, I do tell my students to use this checklist when they are practicing. If you think about the ten things above, you have a much better chance of answering the question effectively. If you practice enough, you will mentally ask yourself these questions every time you answer a task 1 IELTS question.

For pie charts, I advise my students to use a simple four paragraph structure.

Paragraph 1

Sentence 1- Paraphrase question

Paragraph 2

Sentence 1- Overview  of first main feature.

Sentence 2- Overview of second main feature.

Paragraph 3

2-3 sentences detailing first main feature.

Paragraph 4

2-3 sentences detailing second main feature.

Try using the checklist and structure above to try and answer the question before looking at the answer below. This is a really useful exercise because you will identify the areas you need to work on and make mistakes. Fixing them is the key to success in IELTS.

The pie charts compare the proportions of Italian and Yemeni citizens in three age groups in 2000 and projections for 2050.

It is clear that Yemen had the younger population in the year 2000, and the same is predicted for the year 2050. The populations of both countries are predicted to get older over the 50 year period.

In 2000 just over half the Yemeni population were under 14, compared to just over 14% of Italians in the same age group. Only a very small percentage of people in Yemen were over 60 at 3.6%, in contrast to nearly a quarter of the Italian population. The largest group for Italy was the 15-59-year-olds with just over 60% while Yemen had 46.3% of its population in this category.

Yemen’s average age is set to increase with the proportion of over 60s increasing by just over 2% and the middle group rising by 11%, leaving the youngest group with a decrease of nearly 13%. It is envisaged that by 2050 the number of people in Italy over 60 will jump to 42.3%, the percentage of those in the youngest bracket will drop to 11.5% and the share in the middle category will decrease to 46.2%.

Examiner’s Report

The answer addresses the task, reporting the main features and reporting enough detail for the reader to be completely informed. Very clear comparisons are made between the two countries throughout the essay. A very clear overview is given that gives a general picture of both countries, all age groups and both times. The information is very well organised with good linking phrases such as ‘in contrast to’, ‘respectively’ and ‘It is envisaged’. Vocabulary is wide-ranging and accurate with words such as ‘Yemeni’, ‘bracket’, ‘category’ and ‘proportion’. Data is described well with words and phrases such as ‘over half’, ‘just over’, ‘jump to’ and ‘drop to’ put to good use. The range of grammatical structures is both wide-ranging and accurate with past, present and future tenses used effectively.

Band 9 Sample Answer: IELTS Writing Task 1

Posted by David S. Wills | Apr 5, 2017 | Model Essays | 2

Band 9 Sample Answer: IELTS Writing Task 1

I was helping one of my former students recently with an IELTS writing task 1 question that she found a little difficult. It concerned the populations of two countries over a fifty year period, expressed in pie charts. I decided to write my own answer to help her, and have shared it here for you.

The charts below give Information on the ages of the populations of Yemen and Italy In 2000 and projections for 2050. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.

Sample Answer

These pie charts show population data for two countries – Yemen and Italy. On the left, the pie charts show the nations’ demographics in 2000, and on the right they show projected figures for 2050. Both countries are estimated to undergo major changes in the age of their population. In 2000, slightly over half of Yemeni people are in the youngest age group, which is less than fourteen years old. A little less than half are aged between fifteen and fifty-nine years old, and the remaining 3.6% of the population is sixty years old or more. However, it is projected that in 2050 the percentage of the population aged below fourteen years will decline while the other two groups increase. There will be only 37% of the population aged less than fourteen years, while the percentage aged fifteen to fifty-nine will grow to 57.3%. Italy will follow a similar trend. Its youth population will decline from 14.3% to 11.5% while the number of elderly people nearly doubles. However, whereas in Yemen the group of people aged fifteen to fifty-nine grew, in Italy it will be somewhat reduced from nearly two thirds to less than a half of the total population.

I have used some useful words that did not appear in the question – namely, “demographics” and “project” (verb). “Demographics” means the study of a population, which is clearly applicable to these pie charts. “Project” as a verb can mean to guess numbers in the future. For example, “sales are projected to increase next quarter.” I also used an easier word, which has a similar meaning to “project” – “estimate.” I did that simply to avoid repetition.

In my student’s essay, she used too many numbers. I have tried to approximate the figures with words – using “slightly over half” and “a little less than half” instead of exact figures. I’ve also tried to identify trends clearly and have completely avoided speculating as to why these changes occurred. REMEMBER – never add any extra information than you can see in the illustration.

Thank you for this post, David!

Is it correct to write “In 2000, slightly over half of Yemeni people WERE in the youngest age group” instead of “In 2000, slightly over half of Yemeni people ARE in the youngest age group” as the year was in the past?

David S. Wills

You can do either. Of course, 2000 is in the past, and so you can talk about events then in the past simple. However, for IELTS writing task 1, you are looking at a piece of paper with information on it. This information is sort of frozen in time, so you can refer to it in the present simple as I did throughout the essay. However, consistency is important. Don’t attempt both of these techniques in one essay.

Sample Answer 1:

The given pie charts show data on the population ages in Yemen and Italy in the year 2000 and also projected these portions of the population for the year 2050. According to the given data, more than half of the population of Yemen was below 14 years old in the year 2000. In this same year, their population from 15 to 59 years old was just over 46% and only about 3% of their population was over 60 years old. In this year there was one-fourth population in Italy over 60 years old and more than 60% of their population was from 15 to 59 years old. The percentage of aged people in Italy was much higher than Yemen in 2000. Finally, the percentage of the population up to 14 years in Italy was less than 15% in this year was. The pie charts also give the projection of the percentage of population based on age group for the year 2050 and according to this projection, the percentage of younger people in Yemen would decrease while the number of ag d people over 60 years would increase only by 2%. On the contrary, the aged people in Italy in 2050 would be more than 40% while they would have less young people.

Sample Answer 2:

The pie charts illustrate the proportion of populations in Yemen and Italy according to 3 different age groups in 2000, with the future forecast for 2050.  It can be seen that in both countries the general trend is for a predicted increase in the population of people aged 60+ and a decrease in those aged 0-14 by 2050. Looking at Yemen in 2000, around half of the population was aged 0-14 but this is predicted to decline by 13% by 2050.  On the contrary, the 60+ age group will increase by 2% by 2050 to a figure of 5.7%.  Likewise, those aged 15-59 years is forecast to increase from 46.3% to 57.3%. Turning now to Italy in 2000, there is a similar rise predicted for 60 plus age group; from around 24% in 2000 to 42.3% by 2050.  The -0-14 age-groups, like in Yemen, is predicted to decrease by around 3% by 2050 to a figure of 11.5%.  Those aged 15-59 years is forecast to plummet by about 15% to a figure of 46.2%. To conclude, in Yemen and Italy we would expect to observe an increase in elderly in 60+ by 2050.  By contrast, it is predicted that the 0-14 age group would plummet by 2050.

Sample Answer 1

The charts compare and forecast the scenario of three different age group population of Yemen and Italy during the period between 2000 and 2050.

Overall, though the Yemen’s middle age group is predicted to experience a significant rise, the percentage share of its youngest category is expected to fall in the same period. However, Italy follows a different path, its middle-aged group is forecasted to fall significantly in the 50-year period, though it is predicted to have a major increase in case of the oldest age group.

In Yemen, percentage share of 0-14 years of age is expected to decrease from 50 percent in 2000 to 37 percent in 2050. However, its share of 15-59-year-old people is estimated to follow a rising trend, which is anticipated to increase from 46.3 percent in 2000 to 57.3 percent in 2050. Percentage of the other group, 65+ aged population, would experience a minimal change, rising from 3.6 to 5.7 percent in this period.

On the other hand, Italy’s 15-59-year-old age group’s percentage share of total population is expected to fall drastically from 61.6 percent in 2000 to 46.2 percent in 2050. However, the 60+ year old category is envisioned to rise from 24.1 to 42.3 percent in this 50-year span. Meanwhile, at the same time, the age group 0-14 is predicted to go through a slight fall from 14.3 percent to 11.5 percent.

Sample Answer 2

The presented pie charts delineate the demographic segmentation by age in Yemen and Italy for the year 2000, with projected distributions for 2050, encapsulating the ages of the populations of Yemen and Italy across distinct age brackets.

The overview of the charts highlights a significant demographic shift; both nations anticipate an expansion in their senior cohorts by 2050. While Yemen's youth remains a large demographic portion, Italy is expected to see a notable escalation in the prevalence of its elderly population.

Delving into specifics, Yemen's landscape in 2000 showed a youthful majority, with individuals aged 0-14 years comprising over half the population, at 50.1%. Adults aged 15-59 were also substantial at 46.3%, whereas the elderly, those 60 years and above, represented a mere 3.6%. Fast forward to 2050, a dramatic alteration is anticipated; the ages of the populations of Yemen are projected to invert somewhat, with adults set to constitute 57.3% of the populace, a noticeable upsurge from 2000. In parallel, the proportion of the youngest age group is predicted to decline to 37%. The senior segment, though still the smallest, is expected to increase to 5.7%.

Contrastingly, Italy's demographic in 2000 was predominantly adult with 61.6%, followed by a significant elderly population at 24.1%. Children aged 0-14 were the smallest group at 14.3%. By 2050, it is projected that the ages of the populations of Italy will undergo a striking transition, with the elderly expected to nearly double to 42.3%, closely trailing the adult segment, which is forecasted to decrease to 46.2%. Meanwhile, the youngest age group's share is projected to shrink to 11.5%, highlighting a continuation of Italy's aging demographic trend.

Sample Answer 3

The pie charts delineate the demographic composition by age in Yemen and Italy at the turn of the millennium and project the same for the midpoint of the 21st century.

At a glance, the most striking distinction between the two nations is the significant youthful skew of Yemen's population versus the older demographic of Italy, a trend that is forecasted to persist into 2050. In 2000, Yemen boasted a youthful populace, with over half under 14 years and a mere sliver above 60. Conversely, Italy's population profile was mature, with a quarter aged 60 and above and less than 15% below 14 years.

Delving into specifics, Yemen's 2000 demographic was predominantly youthful, with those under 14 comprising 50.1%, while the 15-59 bracket accounted for 46.3%, and a scant 3.6% were seniors. In contrast, Italy's age distribution was more balanced yet aged, with 61.6% between 15-59 years, a substantial 24.1% aged 60 plus, and the young making up 14.3%.

Looking ahead to 2050, Yemen's demographic shifts subtly, with a reduction in the youngest category to 37%, a slight increase to 57.3% in the middle-age bracket, and a marginal rise in the elderly to 5.7%. Italy's future projection posits a dramatic aging, with the senior category swelling to 42.3%, the middle-age group shrinking to 46.2%, and the youth segment further contracting to 11.5%.

Sample Answer 4

The pie charts offer a comparative analysis of the age distribution within the populations of Yemen and Italy at the turn of the millennium and project the demographic shifts anticipated by the year 2050.

Intriguingly, the overview of these diagrams suggests a universal aging trend, with a substantial surge in the senior demographic. Concurrently, there is an observable contraction in the proportion of the youngest age bracket across both nations. This demographic evolution underscores significant shifts in population structures, likely to impact societal constructs.

Yemen's age dynamics in 2000 depicted a youthful population, with just over half aged between 0-14 years. This youthful dominance is projected to diminish to 37% by 2050, a notable descent. Meanwhile, the senior segment (60+ years) is expected to incrementally ascend from 3.6% to 5.7%. The intermediate age group (15-59 years) is also set to expand, from 46.3% to a majority of 57.3%, reflecting a maturing populace.

Conversely, Italy's 2000 statistics portray a relatively mature population, with the 60+ category accounting for nearly a quarter of its populace. Fast forward to 2050, and this segment is expected to nearly double to 42.3%, indicating a pronounced aging trend. The youngest cohort (0-14 years) is anticipated to shrink slightly to 11.5%, while the middle age bracket (15-59 years) is predicted to experience a more pronounced decline, dropping to 46.2%.

Sample Answer 5

The illustration delineates the demographic composition delineating the ages of the populations of Yemen and Italy at the turn of the millennium and anticipates their distribution by the mid-21st century.

An overview of the data presents a notable demographic shift. The segment of 15-59 year-olds is set to expand in Yemen while contracting in Italy. Conversely, the elderly population (60+ years) is projected to burgeon in Italy and experience a marginal increase in Yemen. The cohort of individuals aged 0-14 years is forecasted to shrink in both nations.

Delving into specifics, Yemen's middle-aged bracket, constituting individuals aged 15-59, is expected to rise from 46.3% to 57.3%. This contrasts with Italy, where a significant reduction from 61.6% to 46.2% is anticipated. In Yemen, this age group remains the majority in both time frames, signifying a youthful demographic with potential implications for the labor force and economic vitality.

Turning to the senior population, Italy is poised for a pronounced upsurge from 24.1% to 42.3%, suggesting a rapidly aging society with potential challenges for healthcare and pensions. Yemen's elderly demographic exhibits a slight increase of approximately 2%, reflecting a relatively younger population structure. The youngest age group, those under 14, is anticipated to decrease in both countries, descending from 50.1% to 37% in Yemen and from 14.3% to 11.5% in Italy, indicative of declining birth rates and evolving family size norms.

Task 1 Report: Age of Population

ielts writing yemen and italy

Question: The charts above give information on the ages of populations of Yemen and Italy in 2000 and projections for 2050. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro and Overview) The four pie charts compare the age distribution in the populations of Yemen and Italy in the years 2000 and 2050. It can be seen that the average age in both countries is predicted to increase over the period, and Italy appears to have a much older population in both years. The proportion of those between 15 and 59 years old in Yemen is expected to grow significantly, whereas in Italy, those aged 60 and above experienced the biggest growth.

(Detail 1) In 2000, 14-year-olds and under accounted for half of Yemen’s population in comparison with only 14.3% in Italy. Meanwhile, people aged 15 to 59 represented 46.3% and 61.6% in Yemen and Italy respectively. In Yemen, the proportion of older residents was 3.6%, compared with 24.1% in Italy. So we can clearly witness that Italy had the older population.

(Detail 2) In 2050, it is predicted that the figure for the 60+ group in Italy will double to approximately 48% of the total population, whereas the corresponding figure in Yemen will climb marginally, reaching a mere 5.7%. Meanwhile, that of the 15-59 year-old group in Italy is forecasted to drop by about 15% to 57.3% in contrast to a growth of almost 11% to 46.2% in Yemen. Finally the proportion of the 14 and under group will fall slightly in Italy to 11.5% but it will reduce dramatically in Yemen, by nearly a third to 37%. (242 words)

Clearly, the structure of this question demands an introduction (overview) followed by two body paragraphs – one on Italy and another on Yemen. Let us proceed!

The given pie-charts present information on various age groups in Yemen and Italy in the year 2000 and projections for the year 2050.  (23 words.)

In Yemen, the age group of 0 to 14 years constitutes 50 percent of the total population of the country in 2000 and it is expected to drop to 37 percent in 2050. On the contrary, the proportion of those between 15 to 59 years of age is expected to expand from 46 percent in 2000 to 57 percent in 2050. Those who are above 60 years of age form 4 percent of the population and will increase to 6 percent by 2050.  (83 words.)

In Italy, those between 0 to 14 years are just 14 percent of the population in 2000 and will decrease by 2 percent in 2050. Though the people between 15 to 59 years of age form the largest percentage of total population, they will shrink to 42 percent in 2050. On the other hand, the age group 60 and above will expand from just 24 percent to become the largest group in 2050.  (73 words.)
