My House Essay 250 Words

A home serves as a sanctuary from the daily grind, providing solace and security. I reside in a charming abode nestled within a bustling urban neighborhood. This location boasts convenient proximity to a bus stop, educational institutions, shops, and more. My home is my haven, a place where I feel at ease and self-assured, and one where I yearn to spend most of my time.

Inside, there are three spacious bedrooms, a welcoming dining area, a well-equipped kitchen, and well-maintained bathrooms. In the front yard, we’ve cultivated a delightful garden with colorful flowers, while the backyard is dedicated to growing our own vegetables. Abundant natural light permeates the house, enhancing its inviting ambiance.

Constructed from a combination of sturdy materials like bricks, wood, tiles, and marble, my home exudes a timeless charm. The marble flooring lends an air of elegance throughout. The bedrooms are generously proportioned, well-ventilated, and flooded with natural light. Our bathrooms are commodious and feature modern showers, while our dining area is tastefully adorned.

The open kitchen allows us to savor the view of our backyard while preparing meals. Notably, our windows, constructed from rich brown wood, are broad and open wide during sunny days. The window in our dining room particularly captivates me, as it overlooks a street lined with majestic, ancient oak trees.

Our neighborhood is graced with friendly and considerate neighbors who readily extend their kindness and support. While my house is undeniably beautiful, it is the presence of my family that truly infuses it with warmth and charm. I hold a deep affection for my cherished home.

My House Essay 300 Words

A home holds a special place in our hearts, for it’s where we truly live and thrive. It’s a fundamental need for all of us, and we design our homes to suit our unique needs, using materials like wood, cement, iron, mortar, and bricks.

Speaking of my home, I consider myself truly blessed to reside in the serene Adarsh colony of Gorakhpur. Ours is a modest abode, as we belong to a middle-class family. But within these walls, our family thrives, comprising my dear father, caring mother, my three beloved sisters, and our ever-smiling grandmother.

Inside, our home offers us two bedrooms, a spacious veranda, a well-equipped kitchen, a cozy living room, a convenient bathroom, and a charming little garden outside, which also doubles as a garage. My father takes it upon himself to ensure our home gets a fresh coat of paint and regular maintenance every year. Right in front of our house, there’s an empty plot adorned with various trees and plants, enhancing the beauty of our surroundings.

The three of us sisters share one room, painted in our favorite shade of blue, a space we utilize for our studies. We take pride in keeping our room spotlessly clean. My mother, a stickler for cleanliness, extends her touch of orderliness to the entirety of our home, both inside and out.

Though we might be a small family, our home radiates with happiness. It’s a haven that envelops me in a feeling of security and comfort, a place where my fondest childhood memories were crafted. During festivals and special occasions, our home undergoes a magical transformation as we adorn it with decorations, making it even more enchanting.

In Conclusion

My home is my sanctuary, the ultimate place for relaxation and contentment. The very mention of it fills my heart with warmth and affection. It’s a dwelling brimming with positivity and blessings, all thanks to the loving souls that make up my wonderful family, who transform it into a beautiful abode.

My House Essay 500 Words

A home is a special place that provides comfort to all who reside in it. This is because a home is brimming with love and vitality. Just like anyone fortunate, I too have a home and a caring family. In this essay about my home, I will describe its characteristics and share its significance in my life.

A Peaceful Place I Call Home

Nestled within the heart of the city lies my beloved home. It’s not overly spacious, nor is it too petite; rather, it’s just the right size for my family and me. Our household consists of my father, mother, sister, and grandparents. What makes our dwelling particularly special is its vintage character, as it’s been passed down through generations.

Despite its age, our home stands resilient and strong. It boasts six rooms, each with a unique touch that reflects the individuality of its occupant. For instance, my elder sister, a passionate music enthusiast, has adorned her walls with posters featuring her favorite musicians, including BTS and RM.

The centerpiece of our home is the spacious living room, boasting lofty ceilings. Here, we still cherish the vintage sofa set that my grandmother received as a wedding gift. Adjoining it, you’ll find antique relics like an old television and radio, both of which my grandmother continues to use to this day.

My personal sanctuary lies just next door – my bedroom. It’s my most cherished space, housing all the things I hold dear. Notably, my pet guinea pig resides in a cozy cage here. Additionally, our storage room is a repository of items we no longer employ but can’t quite bring ourselves to part with.

Stepping outside, our front lawn boasts a charming garden. It’s here that my mother tends to her kitchen garden, a labor of love where she cultivates various seeds, introducing new varieties each month to enhance our culinary experiences.

Yet, the fondest memories I hold dear are tethered to our terrace. This spacious outdoor haven is adorned with an array of flourishing plants. It’s witnessed countless joyous family moments and serves as a playground when my cousins come to visit. As a result, every nook and cranny of my home carries a special place in my heart.

In the course of life, I’ve come to a profound realization – not everyone enjoys the same kind of home as I do. Some have considerably less, and sadly, some have no home at all. This awareness has deepened my sense of gratitude and appreciation for the place I fondly call home. I understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to have a good home and a loving family, and for this, I feel truly blessed. Appreciation Towards My Home The reason I hold my home in such high regard is that, as I journey through life, I know that I will look back on the cherished memories I’ve created here with warmth and nostalgia. The simple act of reminiscing about those moments will be all the more special due to the consistent sense of safety and security that my home has always provided. It genuinely is an ideal place to live.

In conclusion

My home occupies a unique and cherished place in my heart because it instills in me a profound sense of belonging, regardless of the circumstances. It aids me in comprehending my role in the world and my connection to the vast universe. For this reason, I am profoundly thankful to have a place that I can wholeheartedly call my own.

My House Essay: 600 Words, 500 Words, & 200 Words Essay On My House

Writing a ‘ my house essay ’ does not have to be troublesome. If you are a student trying to write an essay on this topic, then this article should be able to help you.

In this article, I have listed three references to an essay on my house. These three suggestions have different word limits (600, 500, and 200 words.) you can choose your preferred reference based on your choice.

My House Essay: 600 words

A house can be defined as a building of any size that has four walls and a roof and is used by individuals or families for shelter and living purposes. It is one of the most basic requirements of human beings apart from food, clean water, and oxygen. However, not many people have a house or even a roof over their heads to protect themselves from the natural elements like sun and rain. This is why I consider myself blessed that I live in a house made of bricks and cement which protects my family and me from the sun, wind, rain, and cold winds.

My Ancestral House in Chandannagar

Our house is in Chandannagar, a city in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. The house was built by my grandfather’s father during the 1930s and is more than 70 years old. It is an ancestral house that I share with my big joint family consisting of 15 members.

There is a very interesting story associated with the house. My grandfather’s father used to work as an accountant for the zamindars of the Balagarh region. They were very pleased and impressed with my grandfather’s father because of the dedication and sincerity shown by him during the course of his employment with them. As a result, they gifted a handsome sum of money along with this land to my grandfather’s father upon his retirement. Our ancestral house which I am going to talk about here was built on this land.

A Short description of my Ancestral House

The house is three-storeyed and quite large. The house is U-shaped with an open courtyard in the middle. On either side of the courtyard, there are long pillars and red-floored verandahs. At one end of the courtyard, there is a small thakurdalan where rituals and pujas of different gods and goddesses are held throughout the year.

There are two large staircases at either end of the ground-floor verandah leading to the upper floors. The house has 20 rooms in total and 10 bathrooms. Some of the rooms are set aside for guests and my cousins who have married and moved away, but frequently come to stay with us.

In the ground floor, we have a sitting area, a kitchen and a dining area. The dining room is quite large and can hold 20 people at once. In addition to these three rooms, there are only two other rooms on the ground floor. On the first floor there are 10 rooms. My grandparents, parents, paternal uncles and aunts stay in this floor. My cousins and I have our rooms on the top floor. This is because we wanted some privacy from the elders. When all the cousins are here during festival times, we have lots of fun.

We have a huge U-shaped terrace – from one end of the terrace we can see the road in front of our house and from the other end we can see the garden at the back of our house. Back when I was a kid, we had a clear view of our neighborhood and surrounding areas. But nowadays there are lots of apartment building around our house which blocks the view.

Conclusion

I feel extremely lucky that I have a room of my own in my ancestral home which I share with my huge joint family. I feel safe and secure and the place holds a lot of beautiful memories of my childhood. It is a privilege that not many can enjoy. This is why I aim to take care of my ancestral home for as long as I can with or without my cousins’ help.

My House Essay within 500 words

My House Essay within 500 words

We should always be happy about the things we have – including the people close to us and our belongings. I live in India, where most people live below the poverty line; having a house equals almost everything. This essay is about my house, where I belong.

The Idea Of A House

A house is very important among some essential commodities (food, shelter, and clothing). Based on their requirement and living capacity, humans have constructed their houses in different styles and structures throughout the centuries. In the modern era, while some of us live in a ranch, duplexes, apartments, bungalows, or little huts.

But, no matter where we live, a house is where we feel at ease and safe. It is our shelter for ultimate safety, love, peace, and comfort. The idea of a house started in the ancient age when cavemen dwelled in caves. During this period, life was unrecognized and was not systematic. However, as the human species evolved, the need for houses became prominent with the population increasing.

Houses are built upon two different aspects – needs and imagination. The foundation needs to be strong to withstand any small natural disaster, and the construction should have different appearances based on how far we can imagine.

I was born in a village in West Bengal, India, and I live in a spacious house in the village. No, my house is not big like a bungalow. But it is spacious enough to accommodate ten family members. My father and my uncles inherited the house after my grandfather’s death, and we still live as one family.

We do not have a bedroom for each family member, but we manage the five medium-sized rooms we have. We have five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two toilets at my home. However, there is only one kitchen where the meal for the entire family is cooked.

The house takes the shape of a square, with the bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms, and toilets surrounding an open veranda facing the open sky. There is only one entrance to the house, and it leads straight to the main road in front of the house.

The surrounding of my house is full of different small and big trees like –Mango, Jackfruit, Bamboo, Neem, and more. Unfortunately, I had to leave my happy home and birthplace and come to the city for my job. Right now, I share a 2BH apartment with a friend.

Dream House

However, someday, I dream of returning to my home and renovating it into the house I dream of having. I want to renovate my house with lots of ventilation, a little space for a garden, spacious rooms, and clean water and electricity system. Most importantly, I will include a little balcony and a small library at my home.

A house is a place where we can be ourselves, and let our guard down. It is where we can feel loved, cared for, and feel at ease. Also, it is not always about the existence of a brick-and-mortar property; our family members or people who love us create a sense of feeling at home.

My House Essay within 200 words

The backyard is my favorite place in the house. It has a swing, a small garden, and a large patio where I like to relax on sunny days. My house is not just a physical structure but a place that holds many of my precious memories and is a true reflection of who I am.

It is where I was born and grew up. All the fond memories of playing with my father, laughing, and sleeping on my mother’s lap are built around this house.

Feature image of Short Essay on a House on Fire

It was late at night, and a loud noise awakened me. My mother arrived at that same moment to wake me up. Due to faulty wiring, the house just across the street from mine caught fire. It was the home of my friend Roshan. My mother and I rushed over to assist and calm them.

Black flames erupted from various locations across his home. Firefighters were doing everything they could to put out the blaze. My father was assisting Roshan’s father in saving crucial documents. I learned that we must always keep an eye on our wiring and not be careless or postpone when it comes to critical tasks.

Short Essay on a House on Fire in 200 Words

It was late at night, and a racket broke my sleep. It was naturally dark, but when I uncurtained my windows, I saw glowing lights everywhere. At that very moment, my mother came to wake me up. I could spot my father outside the window along with other neighbours. The house opposite my house had caught fire due to bad wiring. It was my friend Roshan’s house.

My mother and I immediately went to help and console them. Black flames that looked like smoky giants came out from different parts of his house. Firefighters were working their best to put off the fire. My father, along with other neighbours, was helping Roshan’s father to save important documents, among other flammable objects.

The fire had broken into their kitchen, but the other part of the house that included Rohan room and his parents’ room were not heavily destroyed. For one week, Rohan and his family stayed with us in our apartment while their house got repainted and refurbished. Their house was in dire need of renovation, and it looks like the newest house on the street. I learnt that we must always check our wiring and neither be negligent nor procrastinate on important activities.

It began when I was softly treading in the fairyland. I say this because my sweet dream was suddenly broken, and I woke up to a haywire sight before me. I was in my father’s arms. He was grabbing me tightly, and we were on the run. I was wondering if the wicked fairies were chasing us.

Everything felt so hot, and I could smell a mixture of strong body odour stinking from our bodies. I decided it was too much to bear and decided to sleep again. I was forced to reopen my eyes in a matter of two minutes. This time it was the sound of loud alarms that wouldn’t allow my mind the peace it so deeply craved.

I decided to take a look around the vicinity. I didn’t have to do a lot of neck work. We were not running anymore. We ran outside of our house and came on the road. It was at this moment that I spotted the red trucks. The source of the loud alarm was this truck. It was a fire engine. Our class teacher taught us the fireman lesson yesterday.

She told us that firefighters are brave people who have the lives of the burning people without caring about their life. At that moment, I heard the sobs of my mother. She stood next to us. She was crying. I looked at her and put my hands forward. She took me in her arms and wrapped me tightly. At first, I couldn’t understand a word that she was saying. Eventually, it occurred to me that she was trying to say that our house was on fire and the firemen were trying to put it off. I was shocked! I looked forward to seeing my house burning.

Little by little, the fire was perishing and consuming the whole of it. There was only one fire engine. The neighbours were trying their best to help. My father, along with some of the neighbours, had rushed inside the house to save important documents among their precious things from getting destroyed. We were later told that the source of the fire was the poor wiring of the house.

We had been negligent on that account. Poor wiring is risky, and it somehow caused the fire. One thing leads to another. We are staying at my maternal grandparents’ house for the time being. Our house is getting painted again. We have changed the wiring.

Dear students, hopefully, after this lesson, you have a holistic idea of writing a narrative essay on a house on fire. I have tried to be as descriptive as possible in the given word limit. Essay topics such as describing “My House” are frequently asked in class as part of writing exercises. Essay writing is an important skill that children need to develop from an early age. My House is a relatively easy topic as children can gather lots of thoughts and details about their house creatively. Let us guide your child to write an essay on My House for classes 1, 2 and 3 in a few single lines, a short paragraph, and a long paragraph.

  • I live with my mother and father in my house.
  • My house has three floors and lots of stairs.
  • We have a garden outside our house with beautiful flowers.

Short paragraph essays are a good place to learn how to write longer essays. Here is an example of a short essay on My House:

Every person needs a house to stay in. I live in a cozy house in the middle of the city with my parents and younger brother. Our house is just one street away from the playground where I go to play cricket. Our house has two bedrooms, one living room, and one kitchen. My brother and I share the same room in the house. Since my house is close to the main road, we find it easy to go from our house to any part of the city. We have a terrace in the house where my brother and I often play. I love my house because it is a great place to live.

Here is an example of a short essay on my house. These essays are the building blocks to learning how to write long essays:

My beautiful house is on the outskirts of the city. We have built our house on a big plot with lots of garden space and greenery to enjoy. My house has three bedrooms and a living room, along with a kitchen and a dining room. All of this is surrounded by a high compound wall on which we grow decorative creepers.

Our house is spacious and also well-lit since we have huge windows in all the living spaces. When we sit for our breakfast every day, we enjoy a wonderful view of the backyard with the lawn and flowers. Different materials such as bricks, cement, tiles, marbles, and wood were used to build the house.

My house is the best place in the world, and my friends love to come here and play with me. We have plenty of space to play all the games and don’t have to go out on the street.

A long descriptive essay about my house can be tricky to write because children need to write creatively after gathering several ideas. However, children can write a good essay by going about it systematically and maintaining the flow. Here is an example of an essay for class 3:

I live in a gorgeous house inside a colony in a small town next to the city. Our house was constructed recently, and we moved in a few months ago. It is a two-storied building with four rooms, a living room, kitchen, dining room, terrace, and a basement. We have plenty of space within the compound to build a garden. We have planted many different types of flowering plants and vegetables in our garden.

My room is on the first floor with a big balcony that has a panoramic view. It also enables me to set up my telescope and observe the night sky comfortably. We have a big kitchen with a door that opens to the garden in the back. My parents take their tea on the lawn every evening in the kitchen garden.

My favourite part of my house is our terrace. It is a vast open space on the roof of our house which is nicely decorated for spending leisure time. There is a large swing on the terrace, on which I love to spend my evenings reading my favourite books. Sometimes I also call my friends over, and we play catch on the terrace. At night, the open terrace is breathtaking to look at. I can see all the stars and the moon as well when the skies are clear. I like to lie down and count the stars during such clear nights.

Our house is located in a very friendly and nice locality. There is a small market near my house from where my father brings fruits and vegetables every morning. We also have very good neighbours. They are kind and generous people who are ready to help at any time. I love my new house and all its beautiful features. I enjoy spending time in my house more than anywhere else.

From these examples of compositions on My House, children can gather plenty of ideas on how to write an essay on their own. This essay is also a great opportunity for your children to express their thoughts and feelings about their home. It also helps them observe their house in better detail than ever before, as they write their observations in words.

Our house has a special place in our hearts. It is the place where we feel safe and secure. From the examples above, children can pick up ideas and craft their own compositions on the topic.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – Speciality of My House

It is usually said that food, clothing, and house are three essential commodities for any person. Usually, we observe that every person struggles for attaining these three aspects and later on fulfills other desires. If we have a house to live, brings a feeling of complete satisfaction to our minds.

Description of My House

My house has been constructed in my village area. It happened that during my father’s service we had been living in an apartment provided by the government. But after the service period was over, my parents decided to move to our village to reside there only, as it is a peaceful place. We already had our house in my village.

Attributes – We have five rooms, a kitchen, a washroom, and a big veranda. We also have a small hut there. During summers it proves to be the best dwelling place. The size of the house is larger as compared to the houses in cities. My house is surrounded by lush green fields. It provided us with a sense of beauty. There is a very low pollution level in the village as compared to the city. In spite of having my house in the village, it is equipped with each and every facility. People in villages are of very helping nature.

My house is like a mini-mansion when observed from outside. We managed for maintenance and whitewashing our house every year during Diwali. My family made my house a home for me. It includes my mother, father, two brothers and me. During festivals, all the members of our family reunite and celebrate. There are many of the special memories which we have in our house.

Utilization of Space outside My House

As my house is constructed on our own field; so, there is much vacant space in front of our house. My father used this space for gardening and making small shelter spaces for animals like cows and dogs. A little construction work was also required for the same. We arranged food and water for animals and birds over there. These activities and my family made my house a most adorable place to live. This area is one of my favorite portions of the whole house.

House is a beautiful creation of our parents for us. I love my house as it gives the feeling of safety and liveliness. Family member’s love and affection make our house sweet home.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – My Dream House

Houses are the structures built by human beings for dwelling. There are different kinds of houses constructed according to the climatic conditions and availability of space. Houses can be apartments, single-family houses, bungalows, cabins, etc. It depends upon the needs and financial availability of people.

Concept of House

The need for shelter has been observed from an early age. The early men used to live in caves for shelter and protection. Since life was unorganized and non-systematic during that period. The scenario started changing as the need of man started increasing. It was the necessity only which gave rise to such advancements. People need houses to live with their family members.

The construction of a house must be done in a sensible way either it is a smaller or larger one. The creation of a house depends upon needs and imagination. Thus we can see that renovation in the structuring of the house goes on according to the requirements.

I am living in a 1 BHK flat in Delhi, along with my family members. There are four members in my family. Since we are living in a metro city, we get small houses in large rents. We live in a small house not fitting according to the family requirements but the care and affection of family never made us realize the space. There is only one bedroom so we two children have accommodated ourselves in the living area.

We have a proper kitchen, washroom, and a small balcony too. Our house is painted and remains clean always. We do not have much space but it is enough for our small family. We have a park in front of our apartment, which provides a good view. We also have a roof and sometimes we go there for getting good air. I have a small home, but it is properly managed and I love my place.

There is a lot of problem in metro cities if a person is having a larger family. The big flats are costly and thus people are compelled to live in small areas and are more prone to health-related problems due to poor housing.

A Vision of My Dream House

I wish for my own house in the future, as we are living in a small house. I wish for my dream house to live with my parents and sisters. According to me, house should be equipped with all facilities like proper washrooms, kitchens, and airy rooms. I never dream of a big house, instead of a place which gives me the feeling of happiness and security and affinity. I am enlisting the features of my dream house.

  • Good Ventilation and Spaces – My house would have proper ventilation and there must be spaces all around the house. This will help in making the house airy and lively too.
  • Space for Garden – My house would have space for gardening, as plants help in air purification and provide a good look.
  • A balcony Attached to my Room – My house would consist of a balcony opening through my room; it will provide me with the outside view. My dream house should have a good view in front, either of any park or playground.
  • Lively Rooms – My house will consist of lively rooms, by painting them with different shades of colours. I want a reading place to be built in my house.
  • Water Harvesting System – My house would have the water harvesting system to collect the rainwater of the roof and save it from wastage.

House is the best place which renders us the feeling of love and affection along with security. It is the place where we feel most relaxed and free. I love my house and all my family members who are making it a sweet home.

2. My House Paragraph In 100 Words

The foundation of my house was built in 1893 after a fire destroyed most of our city. The firefighters were able to save my house and four others on either side. But the wall that had stood between the two houses was no more, and we were joined together to form a large house that spanned three lots. My mother likes this because she says it makes our house feel like a mansion. After all, we have so much space and because the house is now taller than either of the houses on either side, My mother also likes that there are now three bathrooms instead of just one, but my father says if they split us up again, we would all die because the roof only holds one beam. I like having more space and privacy, although I wish it wasn’t that hard to stay clean.

3. My Home Paragraph For Class 2

I’m not sure when my house was built in 1893, but a stone near the porch with that date is still in place today, along with one from 1910 that says “H” for Henry, who must have been the son of the original builder. That’s why I named my house “H” for Henry when I was a kid. Now I just call it my home or the house. If you want to put it technically, my house is not mine at all as it is owned by both me and my parents, who put it in our name, but they still call it theirs.

4. Description Of A Beautiful House Paragraph

My house is on a hill, so you have to go up some stairs to get to the front door of my house. I don’t like this part because it’s hard for me to climb the stairs with my crutches and then push open the heavy wooden door that doesn’t automatically look like a supermarket. But once you get in, it’s nice because you can look out any of my big windows and see lots of skies and sometimes the neighbor’s dog barking all the time. Sometimes hell howls or whines, but that doesn’t happen too often. My room is on the second floor, up a short carpeted flight of stairs, and has a large window overlooking the street. The carpet in my room is covered in all sorts of fluff, who knows what, because it is rarely vacuumed.

5. Paragraph On My House In English For Class 5

People have lived in my house for a long time. I’m not sure about who moved in first, but I know that my great grandparents lived there with their six children for many years. Then, the middle of the house stood empty for a while until two of our cousins moved in, one after the other. After them came five other people who only stayed briefly before moving out or dying, or both. Then my parents bought my house from the cousin who was left in it after his sister moved out. Now only four of us live there; that’s the smallest number for anyone who stayed there.

6. My Home Paragraph For Class 4

My house has five floors if you count the basement, although I never go down there because it smells musty and there are spiders. If you don’t count the basement, then my house is four stories high with a steep roof that seems to be slipping at any moment. It’s narrow and long, like a railroad car, and it looks like it because of its color and the shutters on every window. It still has old-fashioned clapboards that we have to hand nail on, and there is a telephone pole right in front of it, which my father hates. He says it’s too close for comfort, but I think it’s only about five feet from the sidewalk and most people don’t even notice it anymore as they are always walking so fast.

House as Home: Writing the Places That Raised Us

short essay the house

Childhood was rooms and doors, gaping lace in open windows, potted parsley in yellow kitchens, splintered floorboards, buckled carpets, the bug-zapper sound that the basement light made when your father pulled the string, and then that tube of violet light abuzz over his box of tools. Childhood was place as much as it was people, geometry as much as conversation, material as much as mood.

There’s the evidence of it in photographs. There are the neighborhoods to which we return, then circle. And, sometimes, there are the houses themselves—still standing. If we knock, and the door opens, we are rushed with a confusion of past and present. I think of George Hodgman, in his memoir Bettyville , returning to Missouri as the adult child of a mother in need of care and company:

On the spare bed, there is a quilt with stars and crescent moons, figures of girls and boys joining hands along the borders, and the embroidered signatures of long-gone farm women, including my great-aunt Mabel’s. I am installed here, along with the Christmas wrappings, the desk of Betty’s uncle Oscar, and the bed I slept in with my grandmother as a boy, listening to Mammy’s snores and the sound of the furnace settled into service.

Installed in the moment. Awash with history.

We have been shaped by the houses and the land of our past. We remember, through them, what we have gained and what we have lost, what we were offered and what we were denied, what we have decided about transience, permanence, and most things in between. As memoir writers we must ultimately wrestle with our beliefs about home. We need to answer questions: Is home an act of creation? Is home where we know and are known? Is home where we find ease? Is home where we tell the truth or keep our secrets? Is home what we must finally leave?

What, in the end, is home ? And how do we write it?

Simply quantifying the architectural facts of our childhood houses—stone, brick, siding; color of doors and arrangement of windows; tones and hues; furnishings; the arrangement of mail slots or mailboxes; monthly rent or purchase price—will not, alone, advance our plots. We must find within those facts our stories, our metaphors, our truths, our most elemental memories. What follows is a handful of starting places, illustrated by the words of some extraordinary writers.

Proportions

It’s one thing to take a measuring tape to a set of architectural blueprints and announce a series of dimensions. It’s quite another to think and write of a house proportionately. What was small and what was large, and in relationship to what, precisely?

Think of the work Sandra Cisneros does in The House on Mango Street , a house that is, she tells us, “small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you’d think they were holding their breath.” The language is simple. The effect is enormous. The windows are holding their breath and so are we. We feel the impact of this claustrophobic place on a girl with expansive dreams.

If we were to think of our childhood houses in terms of proportions—how the sizes of things shaped our relationship to them and to ourselves—what would happen to our stories? How might we understand, and write them, better?

Color and Shine

In Jacqueline Woodson’s memoir-in-verse, Brown Girl Dreaming , a family’s existence is gracefully summoned by measures of color and shine. We don’t just see this world of the author’s youth. We understand how a family lives—what has been deemed important (that healthy plant, those polished shoes) and what has not (that neglected swing):

A front porch swing thirsty for oil. A pot of azaleas blooming. A pine tree. Red dirt wafting up around my mother’s newly polished shoes.

Inspired by Woodson, we might make a list of the colors associated with our childhood home—and what those colors suggested. We might name the things that shined, and why it mattered that they did. We might write the story that emerges.

Function or Dysfunction

“The house was by now functional only in one room, the living room,” writes Bruce Springsteen in his memoir, Born to Run . “The rest of the house, abandoned and draped off, was falling down, with one wintry and windblown bathroom, the only place to relieve yourself, and no functioning bath.”

This is no note to would-be repairmen. Nor is it a retrospectively lodged complaint. Springsteen remembers his childhood circumstance with compassion for those who raised him as well as compassion for himself, this boy who navigated a physically broken place with a unifying sense of family.

What happens when we reckon with all the broken things in our childhood houses, then work to remember that one time—those many times?—when what was physically broken was overcome by a gesture or insistent love? How would such story making deepen our own understanding of the self that was shaped by the house, the house that became an actual home?

Many of us look back on our childhood homes with our eyes. Photographs orient us, after all. Those blueprints, if we have them.

But story lives equally within the province of sound—the way the roof whistled when the wind blew, the inherent creak of the fifth stair, the front-door squeal, the hush-swirl of the water draining from the tub. “My aunt’s bedroom was large, industrial, and cold…,” Mary Gordon writes in “My Grandmother’s House.” And then she gives that house a new dimension: “Each footfall, even your own, sounded ominous in your ears.”

That word ominous is signaling a story. A story set into motion by a sound.

What echoed, literally, in our childhood homes? What echoes now, as we write our way back to the children we were, eyes closed in the dark, listening? How might the echoes become metaphors, or meaning?

Our childhood houses offered, at their most basic, shelter. But they also served as round-the-clock stage sets, as a kind of theater in which we were both actor and audience. In All the Lives We Ever Lived: Seeking Solace in Virginia Woolf, Katharine Smyth provides a perfect illustration of what can happen when we establish (with poetics) the physical facts of a home, and then set a story into motion:

We devoted our weekends that winter to supervising the renovation. A beastly wind leapt off the basin, slipping through cracks and ripping at the plastic sheets that now stood in for windows altogether. The house then was a skeleton; from the water, it looked like an architectural cross section. We wore winter coats indoors. I spent my time collecting the sawdust that drifted like snow into the corners of rooms—I liked how light and downy and dry it was—and when, come spring, the house was finally finished, I mixed this sawdust with glue, molded it in the shape of a heart, and baked it in the oven.

This might be our ambition, then: To write the physical places that shaped us with such evocative specificity that those who read our pages will feel not just the wind blowing through but the lives themselves—the gathering, the yearning, the inevitably inadequate but elementally human attempts at shaping and keeping.

Our childhood houses were where we learned proportion and relationship, color and shine, function and dysfunction, echo. Our childhood houses were our theaters in the round. Our privilege, and our challenge, is to write them, to convert the house into a home. ___

There is also a 32-inch flat television screen attached to the wall opposite the king-sized bed. I watch TV here nightly and make sure to save all of my favorite shows.

Posters of movies and cartoon characters from Hollywood films and stories are hoisted on the walls with glass frames, creating a gallery effect. The closet and cabinet for clothes and paraphernalia are all painted in glossy white and blue.  There’s also a shelf for designer shoes, slippers, and sandals that have been collected over the years.

The other two rooms found in the hallway going to the living room are the laundry and storage areas, featuring boxes of valuable or sentimental items collected in the past years.

Lessons from Decorating My House

From this experience, I have realized that a home is a place where the best memories are made. Therefore it is important to showcase these memories, whether childhood memories or recent special moments with loved ones.

It is important that the design direction makes people feel comfortable, whether visiting or living in it. You know that the design works when people experience your home and instantly have a favorite room or favorite place. It should be an area where they feel safe and at home. Rooms filled with personal accessories go a long way in setting a relaxing environment for family members.

My house is a mixture of both classical and modern aesthetics. This signifies how I have not forgotten my cultural heritage, at the same time showing off my appreciation for fresh and relevant designs. The variety of colors, pictures, and displays inside my house will surely surprise and pique the curiosity of the visitors.

A Short Description Essay Example About My Mansion

Our family mansion is an interesting mix of the old and the new. As you approach the entrance, you will come across a personalized wooden door with carvings of all the names of the family members on it.

Welcoming you to the living area is a generous 10-seater coach, with a beautifully stained console and coffee table surrounding it. This is a great place to host parties and intimate gatherings.

Our kitchen is a warm and cozy space where family and friends gather to eat, drink, and toast to a special occasion.

Through the kitchen is our dining room, and in the spotlight is our 12-seater dining table with a tasteful table setting. Indoor plants adorn the corners of the room, giving it a fresh and romantic vibe.

Finally, our master bedroom is a safe space and joyful haven for the family, with a large flat-screen television and mini-bar ready for a night of entertainment. I am really proud of the home that we’ve built and the people living in it. My parents invested a lot in its design and I am always happy to welcome people into our space.

How to start a descriptive paragraph about my house?

It’s important to be prepared with specific adjectives about your home. As you are taking the reader on a literary tour of your house, it is good to write in a way that “directs” their attention to each detail. Pretend you are taking them from room to room and are describing the look and feel of each one, pointing out key elements to take note of.

How to describe a house in an essay?

There are both emotional and technical descriptions to consider in writing an essay about a house. It’s important to have a mix of both. The technical descriptions literally and figuratively provide structure, while the emotional descriptions tell the story. Don’t be afraid to shine a light on the most minute details if they are an important part of the house’s narrative.

Short Essay On The House

THERE’S A TELEPHONE POLE ONLY about a mile or so from Seth Timmons’ dilapidated, but bucolic home. It stands slightly askew leaning in towards the street and at its base the faint, hollow recollection of two ominous impressions created by a set of Goodyears can still be slightly be made out. The extrinsic divots laid into the earth hold onto an unpleasant memory of an event designed in despair as they lead up to the foot of the once regal, Douglas fir shaft and appear as if made by some phantom car that vanished in the night. The pole also has a large bite taken out of it close to its foundation, materializing as if it was, at one point in its commission, attacked by a land-dwelling shark. The now severed chunk of timber that had once …show more content…

A look at the demon that had emerged from the portal. But, whatever the case may be, there’s only one thing that is for certain, Seth Timmons hates that fucking telephone pole! Two Dr. Kale Stevens sat chewing on the end of his glasses while glossing over the open file he held in his hand. An occasional hmm… or umm… was the only thing that could be heard transpiring as the utterances escaped meekly from his otherwise tight-locked lips. To Seth, he seemed more than a bit lost in whatever profound thought he had floating around in his mind over the chart’s results. Then, with a final clearing of his throat, he slipped his glasses back on his face and closed up the manila folder securing the esoteric paperwork back inside. “Well, everything looks good,” he then said to Seth who was patiently waiting on the less than intimate exam table across from him where the doctor sat. “I think I can pretty much release you from any further follow up care of mine. Maybe, just a check up or two, six months or so down the road if you’re so inclined. But for now, I think you’re pretty much all healed up from the accident, at least, physically.” Seth didn’t even so much as

Narrative Essay On Jewish House

The house was pitch-black and smelt of burnt candles and horrendous sweat. Probing the outer walls for a light switch, a photograph that hung lazily on the wall caught my eye. My fingers eventually found a light switch and the lights worked to flicker on and brighten the house. I walked over to the picture to examine it after being exposed to light. My heart sank and I gasped, dropping the picture frame at my feet. Do my eyes deceive me? My mind raced and I couldn't see straight. In the photo was me and my best friend, Jed, who is currently living and breathing in this very Jewish house Adalrik and I were in. An agonizing and high-pitched screech echoed throughout the halls. Panic immediately struck through me.

The House: The Rise And Fall Of The House, By Ray Bradbury

In Bradbury's short story the house continuously goes on with its daily routine, even though the owners are no longer around. "But the gods had gone away, and the ritual of the religion continued senselessly, uselessly." (Pg. 2 Bradbury) It's like the house never realized that they were gone, nor did it care, it just kept going uselessly. Though the owner had left everything was like it was before. In the poem instead of a house continuing on without people it is animals. FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Landmark Rule to Protect Americans from Junk Health   Insurance

Latest action to deliver better health care and prevent consumers from getting ripped off

Today, the Biden-Harris Administration is taking a major step to crack down on junk health insurance for American families and consumers and deliver better health. As the President has said, people hate being played for suckers and the current practice of offering low-quality insurance that people pay into, but then provides no coverage when people need it, is a bait and switch. That’s why the Biden-Harris Administration is issuing a final rule that protects consumers from junk health insurance and makes sure Americans aren’t scammed into low-quality coverage that leaves consumers on the hook for thousands of dollars in medical bills or denies life-saving care right before treatment. The President is committed to building on the promise of the Affordable Care Act and its critical consumer protections that ensure meaningful coverage for people’s health care needs.

The Affordable Care Act has helped tens of millions of Americans access high-quality, affordable health insurance and protects Americans from being discriminated against because of pre-existing conditions.  But actions by Republican elected officials, including the previous administration, undermined the promise of the Affordable Care Act, allowing insurance companies to take advantage of loopholes in the law and sell “junk insurance” plans that evade its critical consumer protections, like denying care based on pre-existing conditions. These “junk insurance” plans leave families surprised by thousands of dollars in bills, often because the insurance plan claims they have a pre-existing condition that isn’t covered.  For example, a man in Montana faced $43,000 in health care costs because his insurance plan claimed his cancer was a pre-existing condition, and a Pennsylvania woman was surprised by nearly $20,000 in bills for an amputation her junk plan refused to cover.

With today’s rule, the Biden-Harris Administration is cracking down on this junk health insurance as part of its continued efforts to eliminate hidden fees and rip offs in every industry across the economy.   These actions will reduce scam insurance plans that offer really no insurance at all.

  • “Short-term” plans must be truly short-term .  Under the new rules, new plans that claim to be “short-term” health insurance are now limited to just 3 months, with renewal for a maximum of 4 months total, if extended – instead of up to 3 years as the previous administration allowed, causing junk health insurance plans to proliferate and confuse consumers that they were real, comprehensive coverage when they in fact provided little to no coverage.
  • Plans have to clearly disclose limits. Insurance plans will now be required to provide consumers with a clear disclaimer that explains the limits of what services they cover and how much they cover.

Today’s actions stand in stark contrast with an extreme House Republican budget proposal released last week, which 100% of House Republican leadership and 80% of House Republicans support.  They want to reverse the Administration’s actions to protect consumers from junk health insurance and other insurance plans that evade the Affordable Care Act’s critical consumer protections, and take the country back to the days where consumers think they’re buying quality, comprehensive health insurance, only to find out at the last minute that they’ve been hoodwinked into coverage that doesn’t cover the care they need or leaves them saddled with huge medical bills. In fact, alongside promoting junk health insurance, the House Republican budget calls to cut $4.5 trillion from the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, which would rip coverage away from over 45 million people, eliminate pre-existing condition and other consumer protections and jeopardize benefits, services, and coverage for tens of millions more.

Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher will resign early, leaving House majority hanging by a thread

Rep. Mike Gallagher talks with reporters in the Capitol after the House passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, that could ban TikTok on March 13, 2024.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., who announced last month he would not run for re-election , will resign from Congress early, he confirmed in a statement Friday.

Gallagher’s departure before the end of his term in January is another blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Republicans, who have been struggling to govern and demonstrate stability in this Congress.

Two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News of Gallagher's plan to resign early Friday. The Wisconsin Republican then released a statement announcing that he will depart April 19.

Gallagher informed Johnson of his decision earlier this week. Johnson, in a post on X , praised Gallagher's "extraordinary work in the House" and for "courageously exposing the threat Beijing poses to the U.S."

His resignation could cause more headaches for House Republicans. Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., who also is not seeking re-election , is resigning from Congress on Friday, cutting the GOP’s minuscule majority to 218-213. When Gallagher leaves, the majority would further shrink to 217-213, meaning Republicans could only afford a single defection on any vote if Democrats vote together.

Gallagher’s decision to leave April 19 also means that there will not be a special election to fill his seat. Under Wisconsin state law , vacancies after the second Tuesday in April are filled in the general election, so Gallagher’s replacement will be decided in November and his seat will remain empty until January.

A source close to Gallagher said the decision to leave was in the works and not related to anything happening in House lately. Gallagher has a young family that he and his wife hope to grow and the House schedule is not conducive to that, the source said.

Gallagher, 40, an Iraq War veteran, is the chairman of the select committee investigating the Chinese Communist Party, and serves on the Intelligence Committee. It’s highly unusual for a committee chairman to resign in the middle of the term.

But Gallagher, an institutionalist first elected to Congress in 2016, has grown frustrated with his own party. He was one of three Republicans who voted against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last month.

He is one of several top Republican chairmen who are not running for re-election in November following a tumultuous House session.

Earlier Friday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., filed a motion to oust Johnson from the speakership over his handling of funding the government, though no vote is scheduled yet. It follows a similar motion, made by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., that successfully toppled then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., last fall.

Meanwhile, shortly after the House passed its final government funding package for fiscal year 2024 on Friday, retiring Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, said she would step down as chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee, setting off an early battle among Republicans to succeed her in the powerful post. Unlike Gallagher and Buck, Granger said she will serve out her House term, which ends in January.

In his statement, Gallagher said he worked closely with GOP leaders on the timing of his announcement — shortly after the House voted to avert a shutdown — and looks forward to Johnson naming a new China committee chairman.

"I will forever be proud of the work I did on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, chairing the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, and chairing the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party," Gallagher said. "It has truly been an honor to serve in the House of Representatives."

On the Hill

Mayorkas impeachment trial looms when the senate returns next week.

The Senate will take up the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas next week, with senators sworn in for the first impeachment trial of a Cabinet member since 1876.

It might be over almost as soon as it starts.

House Republicans led by Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) will make the case on April 10 for removing Mayorkas from office, nearly two months after the House voted to impeach Mayorkas by a single vote for failing to enforce immigration laws.

Senators will be sworn in as jurors the next day with Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) presiding, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer ’s office.

There’s no chance that two-thirds of the Democratic-controlled Senate will vote to remove Mayorkas. But it’s unclear whether the Senate will hold a full trial or instead move to dismiss the charges — a decision that will dictate how much precious Senate floor time impeachment consumes.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), aware the trial could be over almost before it starts, urged Schumer last week not to go that route.

  • “To table articles of impeachment without ever hearing a single argument or reviewing a piece of evidence would be a violation of our constitutional order and an affront to the American people who we all serve,” Johnson and the 11 Republican impeachment managers wrote in a letter to Schumer .

Senators could also vote to refer the charges to a special impeachment committee. That’s what they did during the impeachment of several federal judges, including U.S. District Court Judge G. Thomas Porteous Jr. , who was impeached in 2010 on bribery and perjury charges.

Many Democratic senators have said they’re open to voting to dismiss the case, which they describe as baseless. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) also told reporters in February that he “would be inclined to dismiss” the charges.

The case for dismissal

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who was the lead impeachment manager during the second impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump , said he would defer to senators on what to do but that they would be “well within their rights to dispose of this on a motion to dismiss, because the article of impeachment itself is flawed.”

The flaw, Raskin said, is that the charges against Mayorkas are accusations of “maladministration” rather than the high crimes or misdemeanors that the Constitution describes as grounds for impeachment. The Constitution’s drafters didn’t make maladministration impeachable because, as James Madison put it , it would “be equivalent to a tenure during pleasure of the Senate.”

  • “It would be dangerous to entertain this as the real matter of a Senate trial, because it will then invite an unlimited number of impeachments based on policy criticism and critique of someone’s managerial or administrative effectiveness,” Raskin said.

House Republicans have argued that Mayorkas’s failure to enforce border laws went beyond maladministration.

Dismissing the charges against Mayorkas would be unprecedented in one sense.

The Senate has never voted to dismiss impeachment charges against a sitting officeholder before conducting a trial, although it has dismissed charges against at least two federal judges who resigned after they were impeached: George W. English in 1926 and Samuel B. Kent in 2009.

But Raskin said he wasn’t worried that dismissing the charges would make it easier for the Senate to skip trials in the future.

“It would be no more prejudicial against actual high crimes and misdemeanors than a motion to dismiss a criminal or civil prosecution in court which is granted would somehow prejudice the court of future against hearing valid causes of action,” Raskin said. “This is what courts do.”

Fears of normalization

Mayorkas is the first cabinet member to be impeached since Secretary of War William W. Belknap , who in 1876 resigned hours before the House impeached him on bribery charges. The Senate tried him anyway — but he was acquitted.

The push to remove Mayorkas has sparked concerns that such impeachments will become more common.

  • “I fear that other attempts to impeach Cabinet officers will now follow,” Jeh Johnson , who served as homeland security secretary during the Obama administration, wrote in an email to the Early. “Like Supreme Court confirmation hearings, history teaches that once we lower the bar, the whole process is permanently degraded. My other concern is that, given all this, no future President will be able to recruit a serious and capable person to protect homeland security.”

Those worries echo the ones voiced by many Republicans during the Trump administration — including Mike Johnson, who warned in 2019 that the founders feared partisan impeachment “would bitterly and perhaps irreparably divide our nation.”

  • “I hope and pray that future Congresses can and will exercise greater restraint,” he said at the time.

Asked about those comments by Fox News ’s Bret Baier in December as House Republicans prepared to formalize an impeachment inquiry into President Biden , Johnson said he stood by them and that Republicans have “shown great restraint” in that impeachment effort.

“There’s a big distinction between what’s happening now and what the Democrats do,” Johnson said.

As evidence of restraint, a House Republican leadership aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity to be candid pointed out that while House Democrats voted twice to impeach Trump in 2019 and 2021 — the second time with the help of 10 Republicans — House Republicans so far haven’t voted to impeach Biden. Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into Biden has sputtered in recent weeks .

What we're watching

At the white house.

Biden and first lady Jill Biden will host the White House Easter Egg Roll today. We’re watching for rain.

On Wednesday, Biden will speak at the White House about reducing health care costs.

And on Thursday evening, Biden will host a reception marking Greek Independence Day.

In the courts

Trump must post a $175 million bond by Thursday to delay enforcement of an even larger judgment against him.

New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron ordered Trump in February to pay more than $450 million in a civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who accused Trump of inflating the value of his business assets. An appeals court panel allowed Trump to post the $175 million bond by Thursday to avoid paying the larger amount.

The Florida Supreme Court, meanwhile, could rule as soon as today on whether a proposed amendment adding abortion rights to the state constitution can appear on the ballot. Florida is one of a dozen states that could vote on abortion-related ballot measures this year.

The House and Senate are out this week.

On the campaign trail

The presidential primary race is effectively over, but the primaries go on. Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin will hold primaries on Tuesday.

The campaign

Inside trump’s small-dollar donor struggles.

Has Trump over-tapped his vaunted small-dollar donor base?

In the years after Trump lost the 2020 election, “Trump sent so many emails and text messages asking for money that Republican consultants warned his mailing lists could become useless,” our colleagues Josh Dawsey , Michael Scherer and Clara Ence Morse report.

“The former president's friends told him that they were being asked for too much, too often, and Trump himself ordered aides at one point to slow the solicitations. Some of his fans, pockets emptied, mailed handwritten letters apologizing for not being able to give more.”

Now Trump’s small-dollar fundraising operation isn’t bringing in as much as it once did.

  • “In 2020, Trump and his fundraising committees raised a record $626.6 million from small-dollar donors, 35 percent more than Biden took in from that group.”
  • “But last year, Trump raised just $51 million from small donors, way down from the $119 million he registered in 2019 and only 18 percent more than Biden’s total. His small-dollar haul — which includes donations of $200 or less — was not nearly enough to offset Biden’s lead among major donors .”

It’s not just Trump. The Republican National Committee also raised less from small-dollar donors in 2023 than it did in 2019.

“Trump advisers say that after a slow period, they are now raising $1 million a day online, and the campaign raised $10.6 million in donations last week from 280,000 digital donations,” Josh, Michael and Clara write. “The multiple prosecutions he faces have re-energized his base, and his team expects that their small-dollar fundraising numbers will spike ahead of his trial in New York next month.”

Democrats spar over voter registration

Democrats historically believe that the more voters they turn out, the more likely the party is to win elections.

“For decades, nonpartisan groups allied with the Democratic Party have run wide-ranging efforts aimed at increasing voter registration among people of color and young people — groups that tend to lean Democratic but have historically voted at lower rates than older and White people,” our colleagues Michael Scherer and Sabrina Rodriguez report.

“In recent years, however, there has been a marked shift among the roughly one in five citizens of voting age who are unregistered toward Republicans,” Michael and Sabrina write. Now a confidential memo that’s been circulating “among top Democratic donors has sparked a furious debate in Democratic circles about whether to narrow the focus of voter registration efforts to avoid signing up likely Republicans.”

“ Aaron Strauss , an influential data scientist who helps direct progressive spending at the firm OpenLabs , sparked private disagreements over this issue in January when he sent about a dozen major Democratic donors a confidential memo that challenged traditional nonpartisan registration.”

  • “'Indeed, if we were to blindly register nonvoters and get them on the rolls, we would be distinctly aiding Trump’s quest for a personal dictatorship,' Strauss argued in the memo, which was obtained by The Washington Post and cited recent polling that showed Trump’s strength among unregistered voters.”
  • “He also warned that efforts to gain Democratic votes among younger and non-Black people of color were often expensive — costing more than $1,200 per net vote in 2020, by one estimate — because the groups now include so many non-Democrats.”
  • “Among voters of color, he wrote that “only African American registration is clearly a prime opportunity,” adding that netting Democratic voters among Black people cost s approximately $575 per vote in 2020.”

Biden Administration Finalizes Rule Curbing Use of Short-Term Health Plans

The new regulation reverses a Trump-era policy that expanded access to health plans with fewer benefits than those sold on the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces.

Reporting from Washington

The Biden administration announced on Thursday that it had finalized a new regulation that curbs the use of short-term health insurance plans that do not comply with the Affordable Care Act, reversing a move by the Trump administration to give consumers more access to cheaper but skimpier plans.

Under the new rule , the short-term plans will be able to last for only 90 days, with an option for a one-month extension.

In 2018, the Trump administration issued a rule allowing the plans to last for just under a year , with the option of renewing them for a total duration of up to three years. Previously, under an Obama-era policy, the plans were required to last for less than three months.

The plans, often with lower premiums than those found on the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces, do not have to cover people with pre-existing conditions. They are also free from the health law’s requirement that plans offer a minimum set of benefits, like prescription drug coverage and maternity care.

Democrats deride the so-called short-term, limited-duration plans as “junk” insurance, and the Obama-era policy was meant to ensure that healthy consumers could not use that option to sidestep the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces, leaving a sicker pool of customers enrolling in the comprehensive plans offered under the health law.

The White House cast the new rule as a way to fortify the marketplaces. In a briefing with reporters on Wednesday, Neera Tanden, President Biden’s domestic policy adviser, said that 45 million Americans were now covered through the marketplaces or the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. More than 20 million people signed up for plans on the marketplaces during the most recent open enrollment period.

“President Biden is not taking his foot off the gas,” Ms. Tanden said.

Supporters of the short-term plans have said that the less expensive options are well suited for people who are unable to afford a marketplace plan. Brian Blase, who worked on the 2018 rule as a White House official under President Donald J. Trump, said the plans were also ideal for contract and self-employed workers, including those with incomes too high to qualify for more generous subsidies on the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces.

Mr. Blase said the new rule could cause insurers offering marketplace plans to face less competition. Sick consumers buying a three-month plan could also lose coverage without a better immediate option, he added.

“Nobody benefits,” he said.

But critics of the short-term plans have warned that insurers can mislead consumers who enroll in them, including people who might be eligible for free coverage through the marketplaces. The new regulation requires insurers to provide a disclaimer explaining what the short-term plans cover.

In its announcement on Thursday, the White House cited a man in Montana who accumulated over $40,000 in health costs because his cancer was considered a pre-existing condition, and a woman in Pennsylvania who underwent an amputation and received roughly $20,000 in bills that her plan would not cover.

Sabrina Corlette, a research professor at Georgetown University’s Center on Health Insurance Reforms, said the plans often showed up prominently when consumers searched online for health insurance, with deceptive advertising.

“Often the marketing materials say they cover hospitalizations and prescription drugs,” she said. “To the average consumer it looks like a real health insurance plan.”

Georgetown researchers last year conducted a so-called secret shopper study , calling 20 sales representatives to ask about health plans for people who had lost Medicaid coverage and were eligible for free marketplace plans. They found that none of the representatives mentioned the availability of the free plans. The brokers often used aggressive and misleading tactics to sell short-term plans without providing written plan information, the researchers found.

Ms. Corlette said that brokers typically received higher commissions for selling short-term plans than they did for more comprehensive options.

As a consumer, she said, “you have to be so savvy and careful.”

After the Trump administration issued its rule in 2018, some states moved on their own to limit the sale of short-term plans. Democratic lawmakers urged the Biden administration to reverse the regulation, and the administration issued a proposed rule to do so last summer.

President Joe Biden on Thursday announced new steps to protect consumers who buy short-term health insurance plans that critics say amount to junk.

A new rule finalized by the Democratic president’s administration will limit these plans to just three months. And the plans can only be renewed for a maximum of four months, instead of up to the three years that were allowed under Biden’s predecessor, Republican Donald Trump .

The Biden administration is also requiring short-term plans to provide consumers with clear explanations of the limits of their benefits.

The White House said the rule is part of Biden’s efforts to reduce costs for consumers, which he has been promoting extensively as he seeks reelection in November.

“The president really believes the American people do not want to be taken for suckers and junk insurance takes them for suckers,” Neera Tanden, Biden’s domestic policy adviser, said during a call the White House arranged to discuss the rule with reporters.

Short-term insurance is meant to be temporary, providing a safety net for consumers as they transition between jobs, for example, or retire before they are eligible for Medicare.

But short-terms plans — critics call them “junk insurance” — too often mislead consumers into thinking they were buying comprehensive health coverage, Tanden said. Consumers would later be surprised to learn when they tried to use the insurance that their benefits were capped or certain coverages were not provided.

Tanden said Trump and other Republican-elected officials undermined the Affordable Care Act by allowing insurance companies to exploit loopholes and sell short-term plans that often leave consumers surprised when confronted by thousands of dollars in medical bills.

The ACA was signed into law in 2010 by President Barack Obama. Biden and his administration have spent this week marking the 14th anniversary of the landmark law’s enactment .

Short-term plans were expanded in 2018 during the Trump administration as a cheaper alternative to the Affordable Care Act’s costlier comprehensive insurance. Trump, who had promised to repeal and replace the law, has praised short-term plans as “much less expensive health care at a much lower price.”

In 2020, a divided federal appeals court upheld the Trump administration’s expansion of short-term health insurance plans.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said the Trump administration had the legal authority to increase the duration of the health plans from three to 12 months, with the option of renewing them for 36 months. The plans do not have to cover people with preexisting conditions or provide basic benefits like prescription drugs.
