An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

essay about the mother

The most memorable moment of becoming a mother often involves a single day. You gave birth, or the child someone else baked inside comes into your life. It’s a before, and an after. But that first day is only the beginning of an identity shift that is ongoing and eternal. The person you are after the first year of motherhood is not the same person you are after year three, year 10 or year 40.

That’s why, in honor of Mother’s Day, we decided to look at the whole messy, glorious, complicated story of identity and motherhood.

There’s a piece by Jenni Gritters about how motherhood rewires your brain, and another by Pooja Lakshmin, M.D., a perinatal psychiatrist, about how not to lose yourself when you become a parent.

During this coronavirus pandemic, it can be hard to know who we are as people, as the barriers between our public and maternal selves have collapsed in ways we never considered. But if there’s one thing to take away from all of these stories, it’s that your identity as a mother isn’t fixed; it’s likely to change in ways that will surprise and maybe even delight, as you and your children grow.

How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay About My Mother

Writing about someone close to you, such as your mother, can be a meaningful and rewarding experience. One of the best ways to structure your writing is to use the 5-paragraph essay format.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of writing a 5-paragraph essay about your mother, with detailed examples and lists to help you along the way.

Introduction

The introduction is your chance to hook your reader and provide a preview of what’s to come in your essay. Here are some tips for crafting a strong opening paragraph about mother :

  • Start with a strong opening sentence that grabs your reader’s attention. For example, you could begin with a quote about mothers or an anecdote that illustrates your relationship with your mom.
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her name, age, occupation, and any other relevant details to your essay.
  • Explain why you’ve chosen to write about your mother and what makes her so unique to you. This will help your reader understand the significance of your essay.
  • Finally, give a brief overview of the structure of your essay. Tell your reader what they can expect to learn from your writing and how you’ll be organizing your thoughts.

The First Paragraph

The first body paragraph of your essay should introduce your topic (your mother) and provide a thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Start with a sentence introducing your mother and explaining why she is important to you. For example, you could say, “My mother is the most important person in my life because she has always been there for me, no matter what.”
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her age, occupation, and any other relevant details.
  • Explain the focus/theme of your essay. This could be anything from your mother’s resilience in adversity to her impact on your personal growth and development.
  • Finally, provide a clear and concise thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. For example, your thesis statement could be, “My mother’s unwavering support has been the driving force behind my success.”

The Second Paragraph

The second paragraph of your essay should provide examples and anecdotes that support the focus/theme you introduced in the first paragraph. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by introducing the specific example or anecdote you’ll be sharing. For instance, you could say, “One of the best examples of my mother’s support came when I was struggling in school.”
  • Share the details of the example or anecdote. This could include specific conversations with your mother, her actions to support you, or challenges you overcame together.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. How did her support make a difference for you? What did you learn from the experience? How did it strengthen your relationship with your mother?
  • Tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your focus/theme and your overall argument.

The Third Paragraph

The third paragraph of your essay should continue to explore the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. Here are some tips for writing this section:

  • Start by introducing a new example or anecdote that supports your focus/theme. For instance, you could talk about how your mother helped you through a difficult time.
  • Provide details about the example or anecdote, just as you did in the previous paragraph.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. What did you learn from this experience? How did it shape who you are today?
  • Again, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your overall argument.

The Fourth Paragraph

The fourth paragraph of your essay should provide a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by acknowledging that there may be other perspectives on your mother’s impact on your life. For example, you could say something like “While my mother has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on my life, I know that not everyone has had the same experience.”
  • Introduce a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. This could be something like “Some people might argue that a mother’s impact on her child is overstated and that other factors, such as genetics or upbringing, are more important.”
  • Analyze the counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Explain why you disagree with this perspective and provide evidence to support your argument. This could include personal anecdotes, statistics, or expert opinions.
  • Finally, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how your counterargument supports your overall argument and reinforces the importance of your mother’s impact on your life.

The Fifth Paragraph

Your essay’s fifth and final paragraph should summarize your main points and provide a conclusion. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by summarizing the key points you’ve made in your essay. Remind your reader of your focus/theme, thesis statement, and the examples and anecdotes you’ve shared.
  • Provide a final analysis of your mother’s impact on your life. Explain why she is so important to you and what you’ve learned from your experiences with her.
  • End with a firm conclusion. This could be a call to action, a personal reflection, or a final thought that ties everything together. For example, you could end with something like, “My mother will always be my role model and inspiration. I hope I can be as supportive and loving as she has always been to me someday.”

Example 2: A Portrait of Strength and Love: My Mother

In the tapestry of my life, there is one thread that shines brighter than all others – the unwavering presence of my mother. She is not just a figure in my life; she is the cornerstone, the guiding light, and the epitome of love and strength. In this essay, I aim to paint a vivid portrait of the woman who has shaped me into who I am today. Body: My mother’s love knows no bounds. It is a force of nature, gentle yet unyielding, like the steady flow of a river that nourishes all in its path. From the moment I came into this world, she cradled me in her arms, her touch a soothing balm that could heal any wound, physical or emotional. Her love is not confined to mere words; it is expressed through her actions, through the countless sacrifices she has made for our family. One of the most remarkable traits of my mother is her boundless strength. She has weathered storms that would have broken lesser souls, yet she emerged from the tempest stronger than ever. I have seen her face adversity with grace and courage, never once faltering in her resolve. She is the backbone of our family, the one we turn to in times of need, knowing that her strength will carry us through even the darkest of days. But my mother is not just a beacon of strength; she is also a source of wisdom and guidance. Her words are infused with a depth of knowledge that can only come from a life well-lived. Whenever I am faced with a difficult decision or grappling with uncertainty, I know that I can turn to her for counsel, and she will always steer me in the right direction. Despite the many roles she juggles – mother, wife, daughter, friend – my mother always finds time to nurture her passions and pursue her dreams. Whether it’s tending to her garden, losing herself in a good book, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection, she reminds me of the importance of self-care and staying true to oneself. Conclusion: In the tapestry of my life, my mother is the brightest thread, the one that adds color and meaning to the fabric of my existence. She is my rock, my confidante, and my greatest source of inspiration. As I navigate the journey of life, I am grateful to have her by my side, guiding me with her love, wisdom, and unwavering strength. 2. “ Mom Brain” Isn’t A Joke by Julie Bogen

“…[W]hat we think of as mom brain ‘is a product of the unequal burden that we have placed on women to do both the physical caregiving for children and also the logistical and mental work of caring for a whole household.’”

The author debunks the misconception of “mom brain” – forgetfulness of moms – caused by physiological changes from motherhood. Instead, she points the finger at chronic stress due to society’s unreasonable expectations for mothers to do all the heavy lifting at home and work. She then encourages society to step up its support for mothers through policy reforms and simple acts such as splitting chores.

“These conflicting desires — the mother’s desire to protect versus the daughter’s desire for approval — set the stage for painful misunderstandings and arguments.”

The author interviews a linguist who analyzes the reasons behind tense mother-daughter relationships and identifies the three most significant sources of friction in these bonds. The linguist also provides tips to mothers and daughters to ease tension and prevent future wars with one another. “… [T]here’s something inherently more weighty about a mother’s approval… So, if anyone’s going to love you unconditionally, it’s her. And if she’s not on board with you now, you muse in the moment, what does that say about you?”

Baker tells his story of coming out to his mother through email. The article also directly speaks to moms who have difficulty understanding the coming out of their children. At the very least, he encouraged confused mothers not to make their LGBT children feel less of a person as their opinions mean the world to their sons or daughters.

“Moms are the best managers because parenthood is one of the most basic forms of leadership. Tons of patience, empathy, planning, organising, innovation, and negotiation gets added to your personality with a child in your life.”

The article lists the top traits that make mothers the best managers. These qualities include their multitasking expertise, empathetic approach, comprehensive “Plan B” planning, excellent negotiation skills, and innovativeness, making them ideally suited to handle the pressures and demands in top positions.

“All sons adore their complicated mothers, in one way or another. But how powerful to encounter, from someone else, the beautifully uncomplicated statement ‘I adored her.'”

In the essay, the author reminisces the rich life of his mother, who recently passed away. But soon, he discovers the broader circle of his mother’s influence which makes him adore his mother more.

10 Prompts on Essays About Motherhood

Here are our most thought-provoking prompts on motherhood:

Essays About Motherhood: Sacrifices of mothers

While mothers find their true love and joy in being a mom, many gave up some luxuries and even ambitions, at least temporarily, to focus on raising their children. For instance, some women forego building their careers during their children’s critical years of development. For this prompt, list down and describe the common sacrifices of mothers. You can also write about what your mother had to give up to spend more time with you and let you live a happier life.

Describe your mom. Talk about her antics, her antics, and her ways. You may recount your most joyful memories with your mom. In addition, list the lessons you learned from her or talk about how she lived her life. Put in as much information about the memories while still keeping the focus on your mom.

The pandemic has flooded mothers with an overwhelming amount of challenges. For one, they were forced to balance professional life and homeschooling as daycare centers and schools were shut down. So, first, interview working mothers and write about their quarantine challenges and how they overcame that difficult phase. What lessons were learned? What kind of support would they like to have moving forward? Then, write their responses to these questions.

Several studies show how many mothers stand proud at the top of the corporate ladder. Interview mothers who are CEOs, founders, or have managerial positions. Learn how they gained their positions while dealing with responsibilities at home. Next, find out what women CEOs bring to the table that makes them the leaders their organizations need. Finally, ask what advice they would give to mothers aspiring to be bosses in their workplace.

With most moms being the primary caregivers to their children, they need stable mental health in performing their responsibilities. So, explain why some mothers feel sad and hopeless after birth. Then, explore the different treatment strategies to fight depression or anxiety during and after pregnancy.

Denying women a job because of their motherhood is unconstitutional. Yet, this practice remains pervasive in several workplaces. Research on the standard employment challenges of mothers and existing laws that prohibit work discrimination against mothers, if any. Recommend some ways how the government and the corporate world can fight work biases against moms and help them prosper in their jobs.

Single moms face a myriad of prejudices. Some critics use existing data and studies showing that children of single moms tend to be school dropouts or even criminals. Write about how government and the whole of society can step in to stop the judgment on mothers. First, paint a vivid picture of the struggles of single moms to provide context. Then, suggest reforms that could best aid them in raising their children.

Write about the traits that make a mother toxic. Some examples could be their lack of boundaries, self-centeredness, and being overly critical. Then, write about the negative impact these traits have on daughters’ mental and emotional well-being. To conclude, you can discuss the treatment options to mend rifts between mother-daughter relationships.

Feminism and motherhood have often been at loggerheads with one another—research what radical feminists say about motherhood. Dive deep into why they find motherhood contradicting the sacrosanct feminist principles. But on the other hand, you can also explore how feminism devalued the role of mothers in society.

Explore different cultural standards on how mothers raise children. In addition, you can describe unique styles of motherhood across countries. It would also be interesting to tackle the different cultural practices in helping women have a baby or post-care traditions. Finally, you can also explore how hospitals and healthcare professionals tailor their services to accommodate these special cultural needs.

My Mother Essay 500 Words

We all know that the place of the Mother is at the top as she is more valuable than God. She is the most important and special person in everyone’s life. In fact, we can say that a mother is the most precious gift of God for anyone. Mother is the first teacher for every child from which a baby can learn respect and caring, learn to speak, and a child can see the world only because of a mother. She can be a friend, parent, guardian, caretaker, and teacher in her life for their child also, she takes the responsibility to run a family and make the home as beautiful as heaven. Her smile illuminates the entire home with her presence, affection, and love. Every human being or living creature has a special and emotional attachment to their mother. For all the babies in this world, the safest and most relaxing place is their mother’s lap.

A mother holds the entire responsibility of her family and the happiness of the people living in the house. She helps and takes care of everyone, whether they are elders, kids, or grandparents. She is so delightful and helpful that she is always ready to help her neighbors and friends when needed. Her love is unconditional and pure for everyone in her family. She never stepped back from her responsibilities and always takes care of the house without objecting by saying a single word. Many mothers are multifunctional as they take care of their house and run a business or do some other activities. She has a wonderful capacity to face the challenges in her life and a way to make them into opportunities. They have the ability to manage the obstacles that come in her path of handling the business and caring for the house. She surprises everyone with her skills. She is very good at multitasking, and she can handle it gently without any hesitation.

The nature of the mother is incomparable in this world she always loves their loved ones unconditionally without any returnable expectations. A mother is not just a simple word. It is a whole universe itself. A famous writer once said, “God could not be present everywhere for everyone. Therefore, they created mothers.” A house is not like a house with an absence of a mother, and a family is always imperfect and incomplete without her.

Genuinely, no one can define the meaning of the word ‘Mother.’ We all get a holiday every year on holidays weekends, but a mother has no holidays, no weekends, and works continuously throughout the year without a single leave, even when she feels ill. She never demands anything in return for her work and care. She possesses many qualities that make her an idol of care and love. She always forgives her loved ones for their mistakes and always tries to correct our faults with some strict measures to realize our mistakes and understand our responsibilities. She always sacrifices something to make their children responsible person in their life and achieve success and further a comfortable life. She is a selfless Human Being, and we must have to respect her.

300 words Essay on My Mother in English

(My Mother Essay for Class 9)

Mother is the first word of a child. As for me, my mother is the most precious gift of God for me. It is a very challenging task for me to describe her in words. For every child, the mother is the most caring and loving person they have ever met in life.

My mother also possesses all those qualities that a mother has. We have 6 members in our family; my father-mother, my grandparents and my younger sister and me. But my mother is the only member for whom we can call our house “A Home”.

My mother is an early riser. She gets up at dawn and starts her schedule. She takes proper care of us and feeds us different delicious food. My mother knows all the likes and dislikes of each and every member of our family.

She even remains alert and checks whether my grandparents have had their medicines on time or not. My grandfather calls my mother ‘the manager of the family’ as she can manage each and everything in the family.

I have grown up with the moral teachings of my mother. She guides me in every walk of my life. She understands my feelings and support me in my bad times and inspires me in my good moments.

My mother teaches me to be a disciplined, punctual and trustworthy person. My mother is a tree for our family who provides shade to us. Though she has to manage lots of work she remains calm and cool all the time.

She doesn’t lose her temper and patience even in difficult situations. There is a special bond of love between my mother and me and I always pray to God to keep my mother fit and healthy for forever.

450 words Essay on My Mother in English

(My Mother Essay for Class 10)

Famous poet George Eliot quotes

Life began with waking up

And loving my mother’s face

YES, we all start our day with our mother’s smiling face. My day started when my mother gets me up early in the morning. For me, my mom is the best example of love and kindness in this universe. She knows how to take care of us.

From the very tender age, I became a fan of her as I like my mom’s hardworking and dedicated nature. My mom sacrificed a lot in order to shape my life. She has brought me up with utmost love and care.

She could understand me even when I couldn’t utter a word. Mother is another name of true love. A mother loves his child selflessly and doesn’t expect or demand anything in return. My mother whom I call mom turns our house into a home.

My mother is the busiest person at our home. She gets up much before the sun rises and start to perform her duty. She cooks food for us, takes care of us, goes shopping and even plans our future too.

In our family, my mother plans how to spend and how to save for the future. My mom was my first teacher. She also plays a vital role in shaping my moral character. She doesn’t even forget to take care of our health.

Whenever any one of our family members falls sick, my mother spends a sleepless night and sits beside him/her and take care of him/her for the whole night. My mom never tires of her responsibility. My father also depends on her whenever he finds any difficulty in taking any serious decision.

The word mother is full of emotion and love. The value of this sweet word is truly felt by those children who don’t have anyone to call ‘mother’. So the one who has his/her mother beside them should feel proud.

But in today’s world, some wicked children consider their mother a burden when she gets old. The person who spends all her life for their children become a burden for their child at the last moment of her life.

Some selfish child even doesn’t bother to send his/her mom to old age home. This is really a shame and unfortunate incident as well. The government should keep an eye to those incidents and should take those shameless children in judicial custody.

I want to stand with my mother like a shadow all the time. I know today I am here only because of her. So I want to serve my mother for the rest of my life. I also want to build my carrier so that my mom feels proud of me.

Essay on My Mother 500 words

My mother has had the greatest influence on me throughout my life. Through her, I have learned a lot of things about how to traverse the various facets of life. By seeing the kind of person she was while I grew up, I have modeled the kind of woman I want to become as well. My mother is my guide, idol, and source of inspiration in life, and I can say it with great pride.

My mother is the one person whom I can completely trust. She is the main reason for my progress and development since she works relentlessly. She never makes any distinctions within the family and provides our entire family with equal and undivided devotion and love.

Her devotion to her family is unwavering and complete. She puts her own needs and desires aside for the sake of her family. My mother has been my greatest source of inspiration and has played an important role in my spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development.

Mothers are an Inspiration

A mother contains several characteristics that make her the embodiment of love and dedication. She is forgiving and understands us when we make mistakes. She takes severe measures to fix our mistakes and ensures that we are aware of our responsibilities. From sunrise to night, day in and day out, a mother works tirelessly to fulfill all of our dreams.

A mother is someone who consoles you in your time of need, makes sacrifices, and makes every attempt to provide a comfortable life for her child. A mother is a selfless individual who, like the sun, chases away all darkness and shines the light of happiness and love onto her family.

Motivation is a state of mind that enables us to successfully complete any project or task. It is a form of a natural environment that aids our physical and social growth. We know that we can attain any goal, even in the most difficult circumstances, because of inspiration coming from a person or an event.

For the growth of our abilities, we seek encouragement from other sources, such as a popular figure or a special person near us who encourages us whether we can achieve the objective even in difficult situations.

As a result, we are capable of completing this task. Numerous people are inspired by legendary or historical figures, and then many people are inspired by famous people or their parents. It makes no difference who your source of inspiration is or how much you are inspired by its ideas and practices in order to achieve your goal.

Mothers are a constant source of inspiration and motivation for children to become good individuals as they grow older. They instill in them a sense of responsibility, care and affection for others, and a sense of resilience that can hardly be found anywhere else.

Every person must have some sense of creativity in his life from which he can draw inspiration in order to attain his life objectives and progress. A teacher might be an inspiration in someone’s life, a successful person can be an inspiration in someone else’s, but in my life, my mother is my biggest motivation. She is the individual who has motivated me to attain my life’s objectives and to keep moving forward.

My mother is also an admiration to me because, while most individuals work to gain popularity and a name in society, a mother never feels that. All she wants for her children is for them to achieve in life. She is not motivated by self-interest in her work. This is why I regard my mother to be a human manifestation of God.

My Mother is My Best Friend

My mother is my teacher, advisor, and greatest friend, and she plays many vital roles in my life. It works to instill confidence in me when I’m having an issue. Whatever I am today is solely due to my mother’s presence in my life, as she was present for both my successes and failures. I couldn’t picture my life without her, which is why I consider her my closest buddy.

Despite the many roles a woman plays in her life, the bond she shares with her mother is one of the purest relationships in the world. The bond between a mother and her child is indescribable. The mother is also the one who gives birth to her child and raises her. However, a mother’s love for her children never fades, and she is more concerned about their well-being than her own.

To safeguard her child, a mother is willing to face the worst disasters. A mother may shoulder all of the burdens alone, but she will not allow her offspring to be exposed to any form of heat. For these reasons, the mother is regarded as a manifestation of God on Earth, leading to the common proverb, “God cannot exist everywhere, therefore he made mothers.”

A Mother’s Strength

Although my mother may not physically be the strongest person, she nevertheless meets every challenge in her life and that of her family. She is a continual source of inspiration who reminds me to never give up in the face of adversity.

Above all, my mother is a major source of motivation for me, since she encourages me to enhance my abilities, academics, and talents. She inspires me to try again, to never give up, and work hard until I succeed. The way she traverses through the innumerable obstacles she faces in life is a constant reminder of the strength of a woman and how we can face any adversity that comes our way.

During difficult times, my mom is a lifesaver. Despite the fact that she chastises and corrects me, she is the only person capable of solving the problem, whether it is school or life-related. She is my instructor and guide, who shows me the way and steers me through the toughest moments.

Above all, even at the darkest of moments, she never leaves my side. She is an excellent teacher, a rigorous parent, a loyal friend, and a delightful companionship. Not only my mother, but every mother is an expression of God who devotes her entire life to her family and is deserving of much respect and admiration.

A mother possesses both inherent and learned attributes that identify her job as a mother. The key trait of a mother is responsibilities, which comes with motherhood. Regardless of age or repercussions, my mother displays unselfish love and affection.

She is my greatest source of strength and support, and she never fails to inspire and drive us through all of life’s ups and downs. Mothers can understand and empathize with their children. My mother’s most striking characteristic is her tremendous level of acceptance and tolerance. Despite the fact that she is dealing with several issues, she remains calm and patient.

Understanding Childhood Trauma Can Help Us Be More Resilient

Silhouette of a child boy in mental health children awareness concept, flat vector illustration.

I n 2022, the World Health Organization estimated that 1 billion children were maltreated each year around the globe. Maltreatment such as neglect and abuse are types of adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs . But they often say little about how children respond, which can either be traumatic or resilient. Now, revolutionary new findings in the sciences help us understand how different dimensions of adversity can leave different signatures of trauma and how we can use this knowledge to help children recover and build resilience against future harms.

Consider Ethan and Kevin (their names are pseudonyms to protect their privacy), two children that I worked with as an educator and researcher of trauma in schools. Ethan was abandoned by his mother at birth and placed in an orphanage in Eastern Europe, his home for the next six years. He was deprived of the fundamental needs of safety, nutrition, and human contact. He had books, but there was no one to read to him. He had caretakers, but they rarely comforted him when he was upset.

Kevin, on the other hand, witnessed his father physically and emotionally abusing his mother for the first ten years of his life. Around his sixth birthday, Kevin directly experienced his father's abuse. For entertainment, and to teach him that life is tough, Dad put Kevin and his older sister Joani into the outdoor dog cage, threw food in, and forced them to compete for their nightly dinner. If they refused, he beat them until they entered the dinner arena.

Ethan and Kevin were both traumatized by their maltreatment, but that doesn't capture what was happening inside of them. Ethan had no motivation, was numb to rewards, struggled with school and couldn't maintain social relationships. Kevin was an emotional maelstrom, frightened, hypervigilant, running away from unfamiliar men and hurting himself when he heard noises. Ethan and Kevin presented different traumatic responses or “signatures”—unique identifiers of the mental distortions created by their adverse experiences. Identifying these traumatic signatures enables caretakers, teachers, doctors, and counselors to sculpt a path to resilience that is specific to the child's harms and needs and gives them the best hope for recovery, whether in childhood or later in life.

The idea of traumatic signatures is only a few years old , but the scientific evidence leading to it is not. We have known for decades that different environmental experiences shape development, including how and when our emotions, thoughts, and actions mature. When the environment is harsh and unpredictable, threatening survival, the timing of development tends to speed up, leading to individuals who mature quickly—recognizing and responding appropriately to danger as youngsters. In contrast, when the environment is impoverished, with individuals deprived of essential experiences and resources, development tends to slow down, resulting in delays in the attainment of independence, dedicated social roles, and sexual behavior.

Ethan and Kevin, like millions of other children, experienced two of the core types of ACEs — deprivation and abuse, respectively — during different time periods of development. These differences in experience shaped their traumatic signatures.

Deprivation is typified by a delay in the development of the brain’s executive functions —attention, short-term working memory, self-regulation, and planning. The executive functions form the bedrock to all learning and decision-making, but they are also essential in supporting more specialized cognitive functions such as language, social thinking, math, music, and morality. Children with weak executive functions fare poorly in school, and are socially and physically unhealthy. Such was Ethan’s traumatic response.

Abuse is characterized by warp speed development of a nervous system that detects threats, accompanied by hypervigilance, emotional turbulence, and out of control behavior. The root cause is a hyperactive amygdala, a brain region that plays an essential role in emotional processing, and its connection to a frontal lobe region that controls our feelings, thoughts, and actions. This constellation of changes to the nervous system leaves the child in a heightened state of fear, either fleeing or fighting to cope with an unsafe world . Such was Kevin's traumatic response.

The signatures penned by these types of adversity are further modified by their timing. In studies of orphans living in austere, institutionalized settings — such as the orphanage that Ethan grew up in—those deprived of essential experiences for more than the first few years of life showed deficits in executive functioning, social relationships, and attachment. In contrast, orphans who were placed in foster care by their second birthday, largely recovered from their deprivation in the years that followed. Children who are abused earlier in life , typically before puberty—such as Kevin—show greater emotional dysregulation, weaker control over their thoughts and actions, and more rapid biological aging.

Read More: How Childhood Trauma Can Cause Premature Aging

Different types of adversity, including different combinations, pen different signatures. But ultimately, they also define how we help children recover and sculpt their resilience. Each child's genetic architecture positions them somewhere on a spectrum of responses to adversity that runs from vulnerable to resilient . Those who land on the resilient end are handed greater immunity to adversity because of stronger executive functions that tamp down emotions and maintain focused attention. Those who land on the vulnerable end are handed greater sensitivity to adversity, dominated by emotional turbulence and inflamed autoimmune systems that heighten illness . Environmental experiences can displace individuals onto different sections of this spectrum, either enhancing their resilience or magnifying their vulnerability.

At age six, Ethan's tenure of deprivation ended and a rich life of loving care started with Julie, his adoring adoptive mother. At age 10, Kevin's father was incarcerated and his parents divorced, thereby ending his tenure of exposure to abuse and starting a more promising life with his mother Kate who desperately tried to provide for him despite her own struggles with mental health. Ethan and Kevin were both on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that documented their disabilities and guided the work carried out in their schools. Both of their schools were trauma-informed, meaning that they adhered to the 4Rs : r ealizing that traumatic experiences are common, r ecognizing that traumatic experiences are associated with specific symptoms or signatures, r esponding to a child's trauma by integrating knowledge of what happened with what can be done to help, and r esisting re-traumatizing both students and staff. Both schools were also aware of Ethan's and Kevin's life experiences and recognized that they would require different approaches for aiding recovery and building resilience.

Ethan, like other children who have been deprived of essential experiences in the early years of their lives, required an approach that reassured him of receiving unwavering, predictable care while providing strategies to enhance his ability to learn and develop healthy relationships. His care included access to a visual schedule that showed the timing of activities, including when meals and snacks were provided. Predictable access to meals and snacks, both at home and in school, rapidly helped reduce his obsession and hoarding of food. The unwavering support provided by Julie as well as the school staff, eventually melted away Ethan's distrust of others, enabling healthy relationships to grow. The visual schedule helped reduce the load on his short- term working memory, while helping him prepare and plan for transitions between activities. Stubbornly resistant to change, however, was Ethan’s capacity to associate or link actions with consequences. For Ethan, as for other children who have been severely deprived of experiences early in life, associative learning was heavily compromised, awaiting the addition of new tools to the trauma-informed toolkit.

Kevin’s signature of abuse was initially treated by a psychiatrist with Tenex—a medication for aggression, impulsivity, and hyperactivity—along with cognitive behavioral therapy to help him find alternative ways of thinking about and coping with his trauma. His teachers intervened further, providing him with frequent breaks to manage his frustration and burn off some energy. These approaches reduced Kevin’s outbursts and violent attacks on peers and staff, but he was still highly impulsive and fidgety. Kevin’s team decided to start him on neurofeedback , a method that enabled him to consciously modify the pattern of brain activation, shifting toward greater calm, focus, and control over his emotions. Eventually, Kevin developed good friends, healthy relationships with teachers, and an after-school job where he was learning to be a car mechanic. He also learned to trust other men, including me, one of his teachers, who deeply cared about him and cheered on his successes.

Ethan and Kevin walked off their landscapes of harm and onto paths of hope, equipped with skills to manage future adversity. Both lucked out with relatively resilient genetic architectures that were joined by nurturing environments, ones filled with people who cared for them. Many other children, perhaps the majority of the 1 billion who are maltreated each year, are less fortunate, more vulnerable by nature and nurture. While it is highly unlikely that we will ever flatten the landscape of harm, we can do far more to nurture recovery and build resilience if we recognize how traumatic signatures unfold—and how to create action plans to work through them.

Learning and growing alongside my child, a musician on the autism spectrum

For a kid who was never invited to a birthday party growing up, Spenser has now found his place in the music community. It changed his life. And mine.

By Pat Murray April 5, 2024

musician son on the autism spectrum

My name is Pat Murray, and I am the 64-year-old single mother of a 33-year-old autistic son. This Autism Acceptance Month , I find myself reflecting on our journey together. For a kid who was never invited to a birthday party growing up, he has now found his place in a new community: music. It changed his life. And mine.

When Spenser was 2 months old, I knew he was special; I thought he was blind. You see, he would stare at the mechanism on the baby swing that I would place him in while I was working around the kitchen. There was a fan over top of the kitchen island, and sometimes an hour would go by without him ever taking his eyes off of it. But all of the older mothers in my circle would say things like, “Oh, he’s just a boy… checking out the engineering of it all.” But I was not reassured.

So one night I brought him into the emergency room because I had worked myself into a frenzy, convinced that he couldn’t see. In fact, once there, I had six resident doctors convinced, too! But then one young doctor took a tissue, twirled it up into a fine point, and slowly brought the pointed end towards his eye. He blinked, and we all breathed a sigh of relief. Nope, not blind.

At around 7 to 8 months old, I was convinced he was autistic. There was just something in the way he would look at me from his highchair. I would spread Cheerios across his tray and would watch to see if he could manage the Pincer grasp… a milestone his older sister had reached by that age. I can’t remember when he conquered it. But I do remember his father saying that I was just overthinking everything. It is very common for parents of “Aspies”(short for Asperger’s syndrome) to struggle with coming to terms.

There are so many painful memories from Spenser’s childhood, but probably the most excruciating one was when I went into the school to shadow him for a day. His kindergarten teacher had informed us that she was concerned; he was not socializing “normally.” And so, I spent the day watching him from the corner of the classroom. No one played with him. Then, while sitting in the library that afternoon, I watched him coming back from the stacks with a book he had found. A table of little girls in his class saw him coming and screeched, “Spenser germs! Spenser germs!” They scattered as he passed by. His eyes met mine and then he quickly averted them. He pretended it hadn’t happened. There are too many examples like this to recount.

Spenser was diagnosed with ADHD in seventh grade. I had taken him to six different child psychologists, and he was eventually prescribed Ritalin. Following his doctor’s advice, we inadvertently over-medicated him, and he developed Tourette’s symptoms. It was terrifying and heartbreaking.

I could literally write a book on ADHD by then, but it wasn’t until later that year, after we had moved from Kingston to Toronto, that I heard about Asperger’s syndrome. He was diagnosed with it about eight months later. I enrolled him in Asperger’s social classes at the Child Mental Health Clinic, and we went every Wednesday night for role-play for three years.

For his birthday that initial year, we bought him a drum kit, and his life changed. All of a sudden, he was excited and motivated to do something other than play video games. We got him lessons, and he bonded with his teacher.

And then, he started to build a different circle of friends: musicians. He joined one band after another and became sought-after for his musical skill. It was the greatest thing I had ever witnessed.

Becoming a part of ASD Band through Jake’s House has had the most tremendous impact on him.

The filming of their feature-length documentary, ASD Band: The Movie , was a fantastic experience for him and has brought him and the band to some very special places across North America to perform. They were featured on Canada’s Got Talent, and many other top-tier media outlets. Their second album is about to be released on all streaming services (so stay tuned for that!).

Through the band, Spenser has learned so much about who he is, and why he does the things he does. He is researching his uniqueness, and he is beginning to celebrate his wonderful eccentricities. The community of Jake’s House and ASD Band have allowed me and his sister to better appreciate him, and we have formed a deeper bond with him. We love him so much and we are working hard to help him navigate the world. But mostly, thanks to his association with the band, we are learning to better navigate as a family.

Pat Murray is the mother of Spenser Murray, an energetic drummer with an affinity for punk rock music who happens to be on the autism spectrum. Watch ASD Band: The Movie or follow the band on Instagram and TikTok .

My mother was just confirmed as a circuit Judge. It’s wrong that Adeel Mangi may not be | Opinion

By Mattan Berner-Kadish

My mother recently finished her first week as judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. I am so proud of her and happy that her dream has come to fruition. I am unable, however, to fully celebrate her success. Why?

In real time – I am watching another deserving nominee and his family be prevented from feeling the same joy.

What is happening to Adeel Mangi, who was nominated by President Biden to be a Circuit Court of Appeals Judge on the Third Circuit, is a travesty, and when compared to my mother’s process, puts in stark relief how incredible this nation can be, and how incredibly cruel it can be as well.

I first heard of Adeel when he was nominated alongside my mother by President Biden on November 15, 2023. We met briefly before their confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. What I had heard and read about him was true: This is a kind, sweet, intelligent man who was thoroughly qualified to be a judge in this country – a judgment confirmed by the American Bar Association, which gave him its highest rating.

While Adeel and my mother shared a date in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, they took separate paths. They told different stories of America, were born in different places, practiced different faiths. Yet, both the American-Israeli Jew and the American-Pakistani Muslim have been considered deserving of the tremendous responsibility that comes with having been nominated to U.S. Circuit Court Judge positions. In today’s political climate, it was not hard to see the meaning and power behind that statement.

Sadly, and predictably, it quickly became clear that the hearing was not going to be about testing the legal acumen and knowledge either of them possessed in their pursuit of the position. What unfolded instead was a brazen display of Islamophobia from Republican senators, who decided their time was best spent accusing Adeel of supporting Hamas and the attacks to our country on 9/11 and questioning his beliefs on Israel’s legal system.

Because of the color of his skin and his religious conviction, the hearing was more insidious. While Adeel repeatedly and emphatically rejected terrorism and Hamas’ attack on October 7th, the truth mattered not at all. The Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee used soundbites from their interrogation as clickbait to fundraise and amplify their Islamophobic fake outrage, and some Democrats have decided that the blowback from the right-wing outrage is not worth spending their political capital.

In the lead up to the hearing, a (perhaps naive) observer might have thought much more of the focus from the GOP would have been on my mother. Adeel is a graduate of Oxford and Harvard, worked for years in a well-regarded corporate law firm, and has no “radical” statements on his record. He resembles the average judge confirmed in practice, ideology, and background in this country’s history, even with President Biden’s efforts to diversify the courts.

In contrast to that, my mother fought for reproductive rights as a Planned Parenthood attorney and for workers’ rights and economic justice at SEIU. She spent her childhood in public school, attended college and law school at public universities, and has given speeches and made statements that most judges would never make. While much of the coverage about her nomination has focused on the historic nature of her confirmation as the first lesbian on the Fourth Circuit, what she chose to be in this life is far more interesting and telling than what was not her decision.

In an era where judicial activism, especially from the Supreme Court, is constant and in clear sight, I have no qualms saying that I hope 1,000 more judges like my mother are confirmed around the country. I don’t mean lesbians, I don’t mean Jews. I mean lawyers who are committed to pursuing public interest careers – lawyers, who like my mom who said they were going to work for big law for a few years to pay off law school debt before going into public interest law, and then actually did it.

I want judges who know what a day of work means for the average American, and how their companies and bosses treat them. I want judges who fought to keep innocent people out of jail. I want judges who worked to protect women’s right to control their own bodies. I want judges who did not remove themself or their children from public schools, and know what education looks like for those who attend them. I want our judges to reflect America’s diversity and experience.

For all of those reasons, Adeel Mangi should be a judge right now. I don’t know if I would agree with all of his rulings, and I doubt he’d be as much of a liberal jurist as I would like. But there is no doubting his qualifications, his professionalism, his fairness, or his judicial temperament. Those aren’t the things keeping him off the bench. Racism and Islamophobia are.

While it seems highly likely that his nomination will die without a vote, I retain hope. Not only for the coming months, but for a brighter future, where we have fought back against fear and panic, elected braver (and more) Democratic senators, and where Adeel Mangi is seated on the 3rd Circuit.

Records confirm Trump’s mother-in-law came to U.S. through process he derided

essay about the mother

Melania Trump sponsored her mother to immigrate to the United States through a family-based process that former president Donald Trump aggressively sought to end, according to federal immigration records released Monday.

The records detail for the first time the full path that the former first lady’s mother, Amalija Knavs, followed from Slovenia to the United States — and how the Trump administration’s policies would have made that far more difficult for others. Knavs died in January at age 78.

Trump is the likely Republican candidate for president in the 2024 race against President Biden , a Democrat. The Trump campaign declined to comment through a spokeswoman.

Melania Trump used a legal pathway that her husband and his top advisers had repeatedly disparaged as “chain migration,” the right of U.S. citizens to bring their parents to the United States.

Federal law since 1965 has said U.S. citizens may apply to bring minor children and parents to join them in the United States without having to wait a long time for a visa. Citizens may sponsor siblings and adult children, but they typically wait longer for visas.

During his presidency, Trump endorsed a bill called the Raise Act that would have limited priority sponsorship to the spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens, taking parents off the fast-track list.

“The Democrats have been told, and fully understand, that there can be no DACA without the desperately needed WALL at the Southern Border and an END to the horrible Chain Migration & ridiculous Lottery System of Immigration etc.,” Trump tweeted on Dec. 29, 2017. “We must protect our Country at all cost!”

Trump favored implementing a Canadian-style point-based merit system to prioritize skilled workers, which also could have affected Knavs.

On her 2009 immigrant visa application, Knavs said she graduated from high school in 1964 and attended the College for Fashion Design in Slovenia until 1966, though it did not say whether she obtained a diploma. She married in 1967.

By the time Knavs applied for an immigrant visa, records show she was fluent in Slovenian but “learning English.” Her citizenship application says she retired in 1998.

Michael Wildes, Knavs’s immigration lawyer, declined to comment on her immigration file in a telephone interview Monday, saying such records are typically confidential. The Washington Post requested the records from the Department of Homeland Security after Knavs’s death, when privacy protections are diminished.

The 165-page immigration file released Monday is heavily redacted in some parts, but it confirms that Knavs was sponsored by an adult child for a green card, and it lists the financial sponsor of the parent as “Melania Trump.”

Wildes, a Democrat, praised family-based immigration as part of a long tradition in the United States and called Trump’s criticism of that system “some of the silly politics of the day.”

He said that the Knavses “reveled in becoming citizens in this country” and that Melania Trump wanted to ensure that her parents were “taken care of” and that they could travel freely to the United States to care for the Trumps’ son, Barron.

Wildes has said that Melania Trump arrived in the United States from Slovenia in 1996 for modeling work and obtained a green card around 2001 based on her “extraordinary ability” as a model.

Records show that Knavs was a regular visitor to the United States after her daughter moved to this country and became a permanent resident.

Melania Trump married Donald Trump in 2005 and had their son the following year. She said she also became a citizen in 2006.

She applied to sponsor her mother for legal permanent residency, known as a green card, in 2008, the records show, and signed an affidavit the following year pledging to support her mother financially.

Knavs became a legal permanent resident, one step before U.S. citizenship, on March 16, 2010.

Green-card holders may apply for U.S. citizenship after five years. But records show Knavs waited longer.

She applied in August 2017, a few months after Trump took office and as he was criticizing “chain migration.”

In May 2018, Knavs appeared in New York for an interview and citizenship test, which involves questions in English and a test on U.S. civics. She correctly answered questions such as the name of the U.S. national anthem (“The Star-Spangled Banner”) and the ocean on the west coast of the United States (Pacific).

Asked “What is the ‘rule of law?’” she gave no answer.

Wildes has said the family received no special treatment. Records show Knavs filled out a citizenship application, answering questions about whether she was associated with the Communist Party (no) and whether she would bear arms to defend the United States (yes). She paid the $725 application fee and said she was living at the time in Trump Tower in New York.

Knavs took the oath of citizenship with her husband, Viktor — whose immigration records are not public — on Aug. 9, 2018, in New York, shortly after one of the worst debacles of Trump’s presidency, when his administration separated migrant parents from their children at the southern border without a plan to reunite them.

Melania Trump garnered attention in June 2018 for visiting a children’s shelter on the border wearing a green jacket with a message on the back reading, “I really don’t care, do u?”

Wildes had earlier confirmed that Viktor and Amalija Knavs, as well as their other daughter, Ines, who is Barron’s godmother, came to the United States legally with Melania Trump’s help, according to “The Art of Her Deal,” a biography of Melania Trump by Post reporter Mary Jordan.
