The term motivation describes why a person does something. It is the driving force behind human actions. Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors.
For instance, motivation is what helps you lose extra weight, or pushes you to get that promotion at work. In short, motivation causes you to act in a way that gets you closer to your goals. Motivation includes the biological , emotional , social , and cognitive forces that activate human behavior.
Motivation also involves factors that direct and maintain goal-directed actions. Although, such motives are rarely directly observable. As a result, we must often infer the reasons why people do the things that they do based on observable behaviors.

What Are the Types of Motivation?
The two main types of motivation are frequently described as being either extrinsic or intrinsic.
- Extrinsic motivation arises from outside of the individual and often involves external rewards such as trophies, money, social recognition, or praise.
- Intrinsic motivation is internal and arises from within the individual, such as doing a complicated crossword puzzle purely for the gratification of solving a problem.
A Third Type of Motivation?
Some research suggests that there is a third type of motivation: family motivation. An example of this type is going to work when you are not motivated to do so internally (no intrinsic motivation), but because it is a means to support your family financially.
Why Motivation Is Important
Motivation serves as a guiding force for all human behavior. So, understanding how motivation works and the factors that may impact it can be important for several reasons.
Understanding motivation can:
- Increase your efficiency as you work toward your goals
- Drive you to take action
- Encourage you to engage in health-oriented behaviors
- Help you avoid unhealthy or maladaptive behaviors, such as risk-taking and addiction

What Are the 3 Components of Motivation?
If you've ever had a goal (like wanting to lose 20 pounds or run a marathon), you probably already know that simply having the desire to accomplish these things is not enough. You must also be able to persist through obstacles and have the endurance to keep going in spite of difficulties faced.
These different elements or components are needed to get and stay motivated. Researchers have identified three major components of motivation: activation, persistence, and intensity.
- Activation is the decision to initiate a behavior. An example of activation would be enrolling in psychology courses in order to earn your degree.
- Persistence is the continued effort toward a goal even though obstacles may exist. An example of persistence would be showing up for your psychology class even though you are tired from staying up late the night before.
- Intensity is the concentration and vigor that goes into pursuing a goal. For example, one student might coast by without much effort (minimal intensity) while another student studies regularly, participates in classroom discussions, and takes advantage of research opportunities outside of class (greater intensity).
The degree of each of these components of motivation can impact whether you achieve your goal. Strong activation, for example, means that you are more likely to start pursuing a goal. Persistence and intensity will determine if you keep working toward that goal and how much effort you devote to reaching it.
Tips for Improving Your Motivation
All people experience fluctuations in their motivation and willpower . Sometimes you feel fired up and highly driven to reach your goals. Other times, you might feel listless or unsure of what you want or how to achieve it.
If you're feeling low on motivation, there are steps you can take to help increase your drive. Some things you can do to develop or improve your motivation include:
- Adjust your goals to focus on things that really matter to you. Focusing on things that are highly important to you will help push you through your challenges more than goals based on things that are low in importance.
- If you're tackling something that feels too big or too overwhelming, break it up into smaller, more manageable steps. Then, set your sights on achieving only the first step. Instead of trying to lose 50 pounds, for example, break this goal down into five-pound increments.
- Improve your confidence . Research suggests that there is a connection between confidence and motivation. So, gaining more confidence in yourself and your skills can impact your ability to achieve your goals.
- Remind yourself about what you've achieved in the past and where your strengths lie. This helps keep self-doubts from limiting your motivation.
- If there are things you feel insecure about, try working on making improvements in those areas so you feel more skilled and capable.
Causes of Low Motivation
There are a few things you should watch for that might hurt or inhibit your motivation levels. These include:
- All-or-nothing thinking : If you think that you must be absolutely perfect when trying to reach your goal or there is no point in trying, one small slip-up or relapse can zap your motivation to keep pushing forward.
- Believing in quick fixes : It's easy to feel unmotivated if you can't reach your goal immediately but reaching goals often takes time.
- Thinking that one size fits all : Just because an approach or method worked for someone else does not mean that it will work for you. If you don't feel motivated to pursue your goals, look for other things that will work better for you.
Motivation and Mental Health
Sometimes a persistent lack of motivation is tied to a mental health condition such as depression . Talk to your doctor if you are feeling symptoms of apathy and low mood that last longer than two weeks.
Theories of Motivation
Throughout history, psychologists have proposed different theories to explain what motivates human behavior. The following are some of the major theories of motivation.
The instinct theory of motivation suggests that behaviors are motivated by instincts, which are fixed and inborn patterns of behavior. Psychologists such as William James, Sigmund Freud , and William McDougal have proposed several basic human drives that motivate behavior. They include biological instincts that are important for an organism's survivalâsuch as fear, cleanliness, and love.
Drives and Needs
Many behaviors such as eating, drinking, and sleeping are motivated by biology. We have a biological need for food, water, and sleep. Therefore, we are motivated to eat, drink, and sleep. The drive reduction theory of motivation suggests that people have these basic biological drives, and our behaviors are motivated by the need to fulfill these drives.
Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs is another motivation theory based on a desire to fulfill basic physiological needs. Once those needs are met, it expands to our other needs, such as those related to safety and security, social needs, self-esteem, and self-actualization.
Arousal Levels
The arousal theory of motivation suggests that people are motivated to engage in behaviors that help them maintain their optimal level of arousal. A person with low arousal needs might pursue relaxing activities such as reading a book, while those with high arousal needs might be motivated to engage in exciting, thrill-seeking behaviors such as motorcycle racing.

Psychologists have proposed many different theories of motivation . The reality is that there are numerous different forces that guide and direct our motivations.
Understanding motivation is important in many areas of life beyond psychology, from parenting to the workplace. You may want to set the best goals and establish the right reward systems to motivate others as well as to increase your own motivation .

How to Motivate Yourself: 11 Tips for Self Improvement
Achieve your goals with these science-backed motivation enhancers.
Setting a goalâanything from getting a degree or landing a new job to achieving a new level of physical fitnessâis a big step toward improving your life. But following through to achieve what weâve set out to accomplish can be challenging, especially on those days when motivation wanes. So how do you follow through on your commitments during those times when you just donât feel like putting in the work?
We all lose motivation from time to time. When youâre feeling unmotivated, try one of these science-backed strategies to get yourself back on track toward your goal.
Put your goal on the calendar.
Make working toward your goal a habit.
Plan for imperfection.
Set small goals to build momentum.
Track your progress.
Reward yourself for the little wins as well as the big ones.
Embrace positive peer pressure.
Practice gratitude (including for yourself).
Do some mood lifting.Â
Change your environment.Â
Remember your âwhy.â
Self-motivation tips
Let's take a closer look at each of the above tips. Here, we'll break down these self-motivation techniques, detailing what they are and the science behind them.
1. Put your goal on the calendar.
One way to give a boost to your internal motivation is to create some external motivation: a target date. Whatever it is youâre aiming to accomplish, put it on the calendar. You may be working toward a goal with a set finish date built in. Examples include preparing for a test or taking a course with a fixed end date.Â
If your goal lacks this structure, you can add it by deciding on a date by which you could realistically achieve your goal.Â
Want to run a 5k or marathon? Sign up for a race on or near your target date. Considering a degree? Research the application deadline and write it down. Aiming to learn a new career skill? Register for a course and set a target date to finish.Â
Having a target date not only helps you stay motivated, it also helps you track your progressâyou always know how much further you have to go. This can have a big impact on your performance [ 1 ].
Tip: Setting a target date
Be realistic when setting your target date, but resist the urge to give yourself more time than youâll need. Studies show that we sometimes perceive longer goals as more difficult, even when theyâre not. This can lead to a greater likelihood of procrastination or quitting [ 2 ].
2. Make working toward your goal a habit.
When you make working toward your goal a habitâan automatic conditioned responseâyou no longer have to rely so much on feeling motivated. How do you turn a behavior into a habit?
Identify a trigger.Â
Choose something that you already do everyday, like brushing your teeth or eating lunch, to be a trigger for the action you want to make a habit. Write out an âif-thenâ plan (also known as an implementation intention).
For example, if you want to create a habit of studying for a class everyday, your if-then plan might look like this:
If I pour my first cup of coffee, then I will spend five minutes on my math homework.Â
To build consistency in exercise, it might look like this:
If I get up and brush my teeth, then I will immediately put on my workout clothes.
Making this plan and committing it to writing could increase the likelihood of following through [ 3 ].
Start small.
Notice that the above examples do not say that youâll read six chapters of your textbook, watch two hours of lecture videos, or spend an hour sweating on the treadmill.
Getting started is often the hardest part on low-motivation days, and starting is much easier when the task is small: Five minutes of study or putting on your workout clothes [ 4 ].Â
These seemingly small actions can prime your mind for the task at hand, so the followthroughâa longer study session or a full workoutâcan happen more naturally with less mental resistance, according to The Science of Self Help [ 5 ].Â
3. Plan for imperfection.
Itâs great to feel excited and confident about achieving your goal, but itâs also possible to be too optimistic [ 6 ]. Not every day will go exactly as planned, and thatâs okay. Life happens.Â
One way to boost motivation on difficult days is simply to plan for them. As you think about your goal, jot down a list of the things that could get in your way. If youâre taking an online course, this could include:
Losing internet access
Getting a phone call in the middle of a study session
Having a child home sick
Feeling stuck on a difficult concept or assignment
If your goal is to go running everyday, some obstacles might include:
Rainy weather
Getting asked to stay late at work during the time you usually run
We canât predict everything that could happen, but we can predict those obstacles that are likely to happen from time to time based on our unique circumstances.Â
Once you have your list, make a plan for how to handle the obstacle. How can you plan ahead for when your internet goes out? Maybe you could keep a few lecture videos downloaded to your phone or computer for offline access, or you could identify a nearby coffee shop that offers free wifi.Â
Now when that obstacle pops up, instead of losing motivation and feeling deflated, you have a plan in place to keep the momentum going.
Keep in mind that for some obstacles, missing your task is a perfectly acceptable plan. Â
The WOOP method
Next time youâre setting a goal for yourself, practice the WOOP technique, pioneered by Dr. Gabriele Oettingen. This stands for Wish , Outcome , Obstacle , and Plan . What is your wish? What would be the outcome of that wish coming true? What main obstacle stands in your way? What can you do to overcome that obstacle?
4. Set small goals to build momentum.
âIf you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.âÂ
Naval Admiral William H. McRaven gave this advice during his commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin in 2014. The former Navy SEAL was onto something.
Research shows that frequent small successes can build a sense of momentum that can in turn drive long-term success, especially early in the process [ 7 , 8 ]. Whatever your big goal may be, start by breaking it down into smaller chunks. Getting a new job might be a big goal. Smaller goals could be updating your resume, making a portfolio website, earning a certification, or attending a networking event.

Setting goals at the start of a new week, month, or year can naturally lead to increased motivation [ 9 ]. We tend to mentally associate these temporal landmarks with new beginnings while creating mental distance from any perceived shortcomings in our past. Now thatâs what we call a motivational Monday.
5. Track your progress.
Seeing progress can be highly motivating [ 10 ]. Youâll find many tools out there to help you track your goals. This could be as simple as a to-do list or calendar where you can cross off tasks or days as you complete them. Or you might opt for a free tool like Trello , which allows you to create a personalized digital task board to categorize your big goal into daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly sub goals.
Another option is to draw a progress bar on a sheet of poster board or paper. Hang it somewhere where youâll see it regularly, and fill it in as you get closer to your goal.
What is a SMART goal?
Sometimes the best goals are SMART goalsâspecific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound.Â
6. Reward yourself for the little wins as well as the big ones.
It feels good to be rewarded for our work. But rewards can also improve motivation and performance. Rewarding yourself for reaching small milestones and completing big goals could boost your interest and enjoyment in the work youâre doing [ 11 ].Â
These rewards donât have to be big or cost a lot of money. Hereâs a quick list of ideas you could use to reward yourself:
Take a short break
Go for a walk outside
Enjoy your favorite snack
Read a chapter of your favorite book
Spend a few minutes meditating
Listen to an episode of your favorite podcast
Plan a night out with friends
Play an online game
Visit a free museum or attraction
Have a long bath or shower
Call a friend or family member
Spend a few minutes making your own reward list so that youâre ready to celebrate your wins, big and small.
7. Embrace positive peer pressure.
Youâre ultimately the one who puts in the work to achieve your goals. But other people can be a great motivator.Â
Research shows that feeling like youâre part of a team can lead to boosted perseverance, engagement, and performance, even if youâre working alone [ 12 ]. Depending on your goal, this might mean joining a study group, running team, gym class, professional organization, or virtual challenge.Â
Another study suggests that sharing your goal with someone whose opinion you value can strengthen your commitment to attaining that goal [ 13 ]. For work goals, consider sharing with a mentor or supervisor. You might choose to share educational goals with a teacher or academic advisor, or fitness goals with a coach or fellow gym member who you admire.
8. Practice gratitude (including for yourself).
It might seem like gratitude would lead to complacency and acceptance of the status quo. Yet some studies have shown otherwise. Feelings of gratitude can:
Motivate self-improvement [ 14 ]
Make us feel connected to others (i.e. part of the team) [ 15 ]
Enhance motivation across time, beyond the duration of the gratitude practice [ 16 ]
Induce a sense of wanting to give back [ 17 ]
Improve physical and mental health, as well as sleep [ 18 ]
Thereâs more than one way to foster an attitude of gratitude. Spend the first five minutes after you wake up going through all the things you feel grateful for. Better yet, write them down in a gratitude journal. Is there someone in your life youâre particularly grateful for? Write them a letter expressing your thanks.Â
9. Do some mood lifting.Â
A good mood has been linked to increased productivity, and improvement in both quality and quantity of work [ 19 , 20 ]. This doesnât mean that you have to be positive all the timeâthatâs not realistic. But if youâre feeling sluggish about working toward your goal, a quick mood lift could be enough to get you started.
Need some ideas for how to boost your mood? You could try to:
Spend some time in nature (or at least get some sunlight) [ 21 ]
Look at some cute pictures or videos of animals on r/aww [ 22 ]
Watch funny videos on YouTube [ 23 ]
Exercise [ 24 ]
Adopt an alter ego (i.e. the Batman effect) [ 25 ]
10. Change your environment.Â
Sometimes a change of scenery can help you approach your task with fresh eyes (and a new sense of motivation). This is called the novelty effectâa short-term boost that comes from altering your environment [ 26 ].Â
If you usually study at home, have a session at your local library. Do you always watch lecture videos on your computer? Try downloading them to your phone to watch outside in the park. Switch up your running route, or try a new exercise routine.Â
11. Remember your âwhy.â
Why is this goal important to you? Why is that reason important to you? Why is that important to you? Keep digging until you get to your ultimate âwhyââthe core value thatâs driving your goal.Â
To further reinforce your âwhy,â set an alarm every morning to remind yourself to spend one or two minutes visualizing what success would look like. What would it feel like to achieve your goal?

Motivation Importance in Our Daily Lives Essay
Introduction, psychologistsâ view on origin of motivation.
The complexity of motivation due to unpredictability and fluctuation from one individual to another and at different times has led to various theories being postulated to explain its causes. However, these psychologists agree that in way or another motivation is influenced by both biological and external factors.
Theories on motivation
Goal-setting theory.
Postulates that some individuals are driven to success by the goals they set. The success is measured by reaching the desired definite end. Such people set specific goals which are moderate in nature.
The goals have close proximity and limited security of success. Moderate goals limit the chances of quitting or becoming complacence which are characteristics of tough or easily-achieved goals. Thus, such goals generate optimal drive to success.
Setting of goals is only possible because human beings have self determination to succeed. This is what is postulated by the self-determination theory which explains what drives human beings to achieve. This theory opines that humans are inherently driven to grow and develop and hence our source of motivation inborn. However, these inherent motivators are activated by external factors.
This primary innate needs include; the need to control the events of our lives in order to feel connected to others and be competent in our skills. Thus, since we are able to control these primary inherent needs by controlling our thoughts and conscious, we can channel them towards striving for excellence. We are able to control our desires for success, and feelings of pleasure and acceptance.
The Need Hierarchy theory
This theory states that human beings are only driven to success by those needs which they have not satisfied. Have complex needs, we satisfy our needs from bottom up with those on the higher levels satisfied first. As one moves up the hierarchy of needs, the drive to achieve increases.
Thus, the drive that an individual has for quenching his thirst or filling an empty stomach is lower compared to that of achieving his full potential or self actualization which is the highest level of need.
The Incentive theory
This theory incorporates various aspects of the other theories and proposes that human beings are driven by incentives. These incentives can both be intrinsic or extrinsic and bring satisfaction in the form of physical rewards, pleasure and acceptance. Even though the rewards of pleasure and acceptance are intrinsic, their achievement is usually activated by external stimuli.
However, it has to be noted that external and internal stimuli sometimes work antagonistically. Continued usage of external stimuli as a source of motivation may eventually replace the innate drive to succeed. Such external stimuli become part us and may even turn into âinnateâ stimuli. Since our autonomy is very important, usage of external stimuli should limited less they replace our intrinsic stimuli.
Self-efficacy and self-esteem as motivators
Self evaluation of capabilities and comparing it with the task at hand is a source of intrinsic stimuli which can drive us to success despite the challenges. High levels of self-efficacy will lead to high levels of motivation and vice versa. This is because it only by believing in ourselves that we can take on challenges.
The motivation resulting from self-esteem or feeling good about oneâs self is not strong enough to enable us complete a goal despite the challenges. Ego and goal-orientation are also internal stimuli which can provide incentives which can motivate us.
Motivation plays a critical role in our daily lives including planning our goals in life. Hence, more evidence based research should be done on it. The research studies should include such areas as religion. Moreover, the motivation factors and psychology of athletes who use high performance drugs should also be studied.

Motivation is the process that drives, selects, and directs goals and behaviors. Motivation typically arises out of the personâs needs, and it then comes to life through the personâs specific goals. In this essay, the authors examine the concept of âneedsâ as the crucible from which motivated behavior arises because all individuals are born with needs that jump-start the goal-oriented, motivated behaviors that are critical to survival and thriving. These are both physical needs (such as hunger and thirst) and psychological needs (such as the need for social relationships, optimal predictability, and competence). The aim of motivation is therefore to bring about a desired (need, goal) state. Motivation underlies and organizes all aspects of a personâs psychology. As it does so, motivation âgluesâ a person together as a functioning individual in their culture and context.

That Viral Essay Wasnât About Age Gaps. It Was About Marrying Rich.
But both tactics are flawed if you want to have any hope of becoming yourself..
Women are wisest, a viral essay in New York magazineâs the Cut argues , to maximize their most valuable cultural assetsâ youth and beautyâand marry older men when theyâre still very young. Doing so, 27-year-old writer Grazie Sophia Christie writes, opens up a life of ease, and gets women off of a male-defined timeline that has our professional and reproductive lives crashing irreconcilably into each other. Sure, she says, there are concessions, like oneâs freedom and entire independent identity. But those are small gives in comparison to a life in which a person has no adult responsibilities, including the responsibility to become oneself.
This is all framed as rational, perhaps even feminist advice, a way for women to quit playing by menâs rules and to reject exploitative capitalist demandsâa choice the writer argues is the most obviously intelligent one. That other Harvard undergraduates did not busy themselves trying to attract wealthy or soon-to-be-wealthy men seems to flummox her (taking her âhigh breasts, most of my eggs, plausible deniability when it came to purity, a flush ponytail, a pep in my step that had yet to run outâ to the Harvard Business School library, âI could not understand why my female classmates did not join me, given their intelligenceâ). But itâs nothing more than a recycling of some of the oldest advice around: For women to mold themselves around more-powerful men, to never grow into independent adults, and to find happiness in a state of perpetual pre-adolescence, submission, and dependence. These are odd choices for an aspiring writer (one wonders what, exactly, a girl who never wants to grow up and has no idea who she is beyond what a man has made her into could possibly have to write about). And itâs bad advice for most human beings, at least if what most human beings seek are meaningful and happy lives.
But this is not an essay about the benefits of younger women marrying older men. It is an essay about the benefits of younger women marrying rich men. Most of the purported upsidesâa paid-for apartment, paid-for vacations, lives split between Miami and Londonâare less about her husbandâs age than his wealth. Every 20-year-old in the country could decide to marry a thirtysomething and she wouldnât suddenly be gifted an eternal vacation.
Which is part of what makes the framing of this as an age-gap essay both strange and revealing. The benefits the writer derives from her relationship come from her partnerâs money. But the things she gives up are the result of both their profound financial inequality and her relative youth. Compared to her and her peers, she writes, her husband âstruck me instead as so finished, formed.â By contrast, âAt 20, I had felt daunted by the project of becoming my ideal self.â The idea of having to take responsibility for her own life was profoundly unappealing, as âadulthood seemed a series of exhausting obligations.â Tying herself to an older man gave her an out, a way to skip the work of becoming an adult by allowing a father-husband to mold her to his desires. âMy husband isnât my partner,â she writes. âHeâs my mentor, my lover, and, only in certain contexts, my friend. Iâll never forget it, how he showed me around our first place like he was introducing me to myself: This is the wine youâll drink, where youâll keep your clothes, we vacation here, this is the other language weâll speak, youâll learn it, and I did.â
These, by the way, are the things she says are benefits of marrying older.
The downsides are many, including a basic inability to express a full range of human emotion (âI live in an apartment whose rent he pays and that constrains the freedom with which I can ever be angry with himâ) and an understanding that she owes back, in some other form, what he materially provides (the most revealing line in the essay may be when she claims that âwhen someone says they feel unappreciated, what they really mean is youâre in debt to themâ). It is clear that part of what she has paid in exchange for a paid-for life is a total lack of any sense of self, and a tacit agreement not to pursue one. âIf he ever betrayed me and I had to move on, I would survive,â she writes, âbut would find in my humor, preferences, the way I make coffee or the bed nothing that he did not teach, change, mold, recompose, stamp with his initials.â
Reading Christieâs essay, I thought of another one: Joan Didionâs on self-respect , in which Didion argues that âcharacterâthe willingness to accept responsibility for oneâs own lifeâis the source from which self-respect springs.â If we lack self-respect, âwe are peculiarly in thrall to everyone we see, curiously determined to live outâsince our self-image is untenableâtheir false notions of us.â Self-respect may not make life effortless and easy. But it means that whenever âwe eventually lie down alone in that notoriously un- comfortable bed, the one we make ourselves,â at least we can fall asleep.
It can feel catty to publicly criticize another womanâs romantic choices, and doing so inevitably opens one up to accusations of jealousy or pettiness. But the stories we tell about marriage, love, partnership, and gender matter, especially when theyâre told in major culture-shaping magazines. And itâs equally as condescending to say that womenâs choices are off-limits for critique, especially when those choices are shared as universal advice, and especially when they neatly dovetail with resurgent conservative efforts to make womenâs lives smaller and less independent. âMarry richâ is, as labor economist Kathryn Anne Edwards put it in Bloomberg, essentially the Republican plan for mothers. The model of marriage as a hierarchy with a breadwinning man on top and a younger, dependent, submissive woman meeting his needs and those of their children is not exactly a fresh or groundbreaking ideal. Itâs a model that kept women trapped and miserable for centuries.
Itâs also one that profoundly stunted womenâs intellectual and personal growth. In her essay for the Cut, Christie seems to believe that a life of ease will abet a life freed up for creative endeavors, and happiness. But thereâs little evidence that having material abundance and little adversity actually makes people happy, let alone more creatively generativ e . Having oneâs basic material needs met does seem to be a prerequisite for happiness. But a meaningful life requires some sense of self, an ability to look outward rather than inward, and the intellectual and experiential layers that come with facing hardship and surmounting it.
A good and happy life is not a life in which all is easy. A good and happy life (and here I am borrowing from centuries of philosophers and scholars) is one characterized by the pursuit of meaning and knowledge, by deep connections with and service to other people (and not just to your husband and children), and by the kind of rich self-knowledge and satisfaction that comes from owning oneâs choices, taking responsibility for oneâs life, and doing the difficult and endless work of growing into a fully-formed personâand then evolving again. Handing everything about oneâs life over to an authority figure, from the big decisions to the minute details, may seem like a path to ease for those who cannot stomach the obligations and opportunities of their own freedom. Itâs really an intellectual and emotional dead end.
And what kind of man seeks out a marriage like this, in which his only job is to provide, but very much is owed? What kind of man desires, as the writer cast herself, a raw lump of clay to be molded to simply fill in whatever cracks in his life needed filling? And if the transaction is money and guidance in exchange for youth, beauty, and pliability, what happens when the young, beautiful, and pliable party inevitably ages and perhaps feels her backbone begin to harden? What happens if she has children?
The thing about using youth and beauty as a currency is that those assets depreciate pretty rapidly. There is a nearly endless supply of young and beautiful women, with more added each year. There are smaller numbers of wealthy older men, and the pool winnows down even further if one presumes, as Christie does, that many of these men want to date and marry compliant twentysomethings. If youth and beauty are what youâre exchanging for a manâs resources, youâd better make sure thereâs something else thereâlike the basic ability to provide for yourself, or at the very least a sense of selfâto back that exchange up.
It is hard to be an adult woman; itâs hard to be an adult, period. And many women in our era of unfinished feminism no doubt find plenty to envy about a life in which they donât have to work tirelessly to barely make ends meet, donât have to manage the needs of both children and man-children, could simply be taken care of for once. This may also explain some of the social media fascination with Trad Wives and stay-at-home girlfriends (some of that fascination is also, I suspect, simply a sexual submission fetish , but thatâs another column). Fantasies of leisure reflect a real need for it, and American women would be far better offâhappier, freerâif time and resources were not so often so constrained, and doled out so inequitably.
But the way out is not actually found in submission, and certainly not in electing to be carried by a man who could choose to drop you at any time. Thatâs not a life of ease. Itâs a life of perpetual insecurity, knowing your spouse believes your value is decreasing by the day while hisâan actual dollar figureârises. A life in which one simply allows another adult to do all the deciding for them is a stunted life, one of profound smallnessâeven if the vacations are nice.
