Rhetoric is an ancient art, and it’s one that many people in modern society lack. During Classical Greek history, rhetoricians used this form to persuade listeners through powerful speeches.

While speeches still hold a role in contemporary society, today, rhetoric often comes through the written word, not the spoken word. Persuasive writing uses writing skills to get the reader to the point of agreeing with you.

By using the right writing techniques, you can guide the reader to your desired conclusion. Here’s what persuasive writing is, where it is found, and how you can use it to be a stronger writer.

What Is Persuasive Writing?

Choosing a thesis statement, to persuade your audience, you must know them, introduction, body paragraph, opposing view paragraph, writing the piece, editing your persuasive essay.

Persuasive writing is writing that helps the reader come to the writer’s opinion on a topic. It is a type of argumentative essay that uses logical arguments to pull in the reader and, through the writing process , present arguments that will support a stance on an issue.

While the goal may not always be reached, the process involves a logical presentation of those arguments until the reader can come to a conclusion.

At the heart of persuasive writing is the thesis statement . The thesis statement is the statement of the writer’s position on the argument.

A thesis statement will narrow a topic into a specific area of focus, then establishes the direction for the piece of writing. The thesis statement will also state the author’s opinion on the argument.

At its heart, a thesis statement is a statement of opinion, not fact. It provides the basis for argumentative and persuasive wring. So, a fact would state:   

  •  Electric cars use less fuel than gas-powered cars.

This is true and leaves nothing for persuasion. You could write an informative piece of non-fiction writing with this statement, but you could not write persuasively.

A thesis statement would use that fact to create an opinion, such as:

  •  State governments should offer more tax incentives to drivers for purchasing electric cars to cut down on fuel use.

This statement can be the basis for an entire piece of persuasive writing.

Before you can write a persuasive essay , you must understand your audience. Research your audience to appreciate their preconceived ideas and positions on the topic. This will help you craft arguments that will pull them closer to your opinion.

Once you have studied your audience, delve into the research. You need convincing evidence and facts to persuade your audience. Use many sources, backed by facts and statistics if appropriate.

Research both sides of the argument so you can argue appropriately against the opposition’s most convincing points.

Structuring the Persuasive Essay

Once you have done some preliminary research, it’s time to create an outline. This style of writing follows the same basic template, no matter what your points may be. A persuasive essay has four essential parts, which include:

The introduction paragraph needs to hook the reader. They need a reason to continue reading your essay. It will introduce the writer’s opinion and outline the points, but not delve too deeply into the details of the piece.

Each paragraph in the main body of a persuasive essay will cover one point. After stating the point, provide details to support it. This is where facts are more important than the writer’s opinion and personal experience, whenever possible.

Research findings are compelling in many types of persuasive writing. The essay can have as many body paragraphs as necessary to persuade the reader.

A persuasive essay can’t ignore the opposition’s view. In your research, you should identify some of the key points that your opposition may bring. Successful persuasive writers will state the opposing viewpoint and then use more facts to refute the opposition’s main points.

The conclusion is a powerful part of a piece of writing. It gives the chance to restate the persuasive piece’s main points and draw it all together. Often, a writer will restate the thesis with different wording.

The initial research and outlining process are both parts of the pre-writing process. Once that is done, the writer is ready to write a first draft of the piece. Even a persuasive letter requires careful writing and editing to do its job well.

As you write, use these essential elements of rhetorical arguments:

  • Ethos – Ethical reasoning
  • Logos – Logical reasoning
  • Pathos – Passionate reasoning

When used well and in concert with one another, ethos, logos, and pathos create strong arguments that are hard to refute.

For ethical reasoning, make sure your points are factual and are not misleading in any way. When it comes to logical reasoning, make your points centered on the facts, and take the reader through a logical progression of arguments.

Passionate reasoning is usually the easiest when writers choose good topics. Strategic repetition and an emphasis on your points help with pathos, as will your passion for the subject.

Balancing these three will make your writing quite persuasive and powerful. When you can find that balance, the reader will naturally walk through the logic of your thinking.

You may not persuade them, but you will present a persuasive argument that will help them think about your position.

Once you have your persuasive essay drafted, you’re ready to edit it. First, edit the essay for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, then look at it again.

It basically aims to change or influence the readers’ viewpoint about a topic and drive them to take an action, through facts, logical arguments, or an emotional appeal.

Wikipedia defines persuasive writing as – “ any written communication with the intention to convince or influence readers to believe in an idea/ opinion and to do an action.”

The very fact that persuasive writing is not just about spreading information, but about persuading the reader enables it to have a different set of techniques and strategies to effectively convince the reader.

What is the importance or real-life applications of persuasive writing?

Persuasive writing has lots of real-life applications , some of which are as follows:

  • In a company blog article to convince the reader to buy a company product or service
  • In a research proposal or a technical paper to convince the readers of the findings and deductions
  • In a review article of food, a book, or a movie

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos- the three pillars of persuasive writing

An effective piece of persuasive writing utilizes three fundamental features viz. ethos, logos, and pathos. These three features are to be strategically embedded at the core of any piece of persuasive writing to enhance it.

Let’s have a quick look at each of them and understand their significance:

Ethos

Ethos is a Greek word that means “character”. Ethos is the foundational pillar in persuasive writing which aims at establishing the credibility of the writer.

To convince any reader of any written piece of content, the first step is to make them believe the writer, and ethos achieves exactly that. Ethos helps establish a positive mindset in the minds of the readers, even before they start reading the written piece.

Logos

Logos is a Greek word that means “logic”. Logos is the second pillar in persuasive writing which aims at backing the arguments or viewpoints of the writer with evidence, logical arguments, and data to persuade the readers.

Any form of written content or argument becomes more persuasive when it is backed by facts and data. Backing their work with relevant facts expresses that the writer did a lot of research and has a very good idea of what they are talking about.

But merely having the facts and data is not enough. This is because if presented in a haphazard way, it will not be effective in capturing the reader’s attention. Thus, logos also deals with structuring the persuasive writing piece in the best possible manner to present them in the most effective manner.

Pathos

Pathos is a Greek word that means “experience”. Pathos is the third pillar in persuasive writing which aims at involving a writer’s appeal to emotion. A lot of human actions tend to be led by emotions rather than facts.

Hence, it is important for the readers to sympathize or empathize with the writer in order to be convinced of their viewpoint. These emotions can be engrained in the reader through the personal experiences of the writer.

Effective storytelling helps achieve a significant persuading impact. However, it is important for the writer to reflect on the various feelings that the readers might have while sharing this, as every person thinks differently.

What are some tips and strategies for effective persuasive writing?

Persuasive writing finds its applications in a wide variety of scenarios and, if effectively framed, can help achieve tremendous outcomes.

Here are some tips that writers can use for result-generating persuasive writing :

1. Choosing the right topic is important

It is crucial for writers to have deep knowledge about the topic for which the content is going to be written. Effective persuasive writing will involve a lot of subject knowledge, research, experiences, and passion for the topic. Only when a writer is absolutely clear about their own stance, will they be able to convince their readers.

2. Targeting the right audience and researching about them can do wonders

As much as possible, the writing should try to focus on a specialized set of reading audiences. This is because trying to cater to a broader audience will only dilute the impact of the content.

Writers must have a clear idea about their audience and what they want. In this way, they will be able to emotionally engage with them and deliver the message in a crisp and effective manner, inevitably persuading a larger number of readers.

3. The thesis statement should be defined appropriately

A clear and well-defined thesis statement is the heart and soul of any persuasive writing piece. Basically, it briefly summarizes the stance of the author (what the author wants to convince the audience). Clearly defining the thesis statement will help the author to appropriately structure the content around it. 

4. Extensive research

A piece of persuasive writing content will involve a lot of logical arguments, facts, evidence, etc. Thus, writers must thoroughly research every piece of evidence or data that they plan to present to the readers. Even a glimpse of truthlessness might be a major turn-off for the reader.

5. Strategic repetition is important

It is important to remind the reader of the actual point of view that needs to be established and prevent them from getting swerve off the main topic. Hence, strategically repeating the main points in different ways in different places will keep the readers on track.  

6. Address counter-arguments

One of the most interesting, but useful ways to convince the readers or increase the credibility of the content is by addressing the counter-arguments. This will strengthen the author’s original argument as contrasting viewpoints will be proved weaker.

7. Directly speaking to the readers is important

Merely targeting the right reading audience will not suffice. The audience needs to connect with the content and feel that this content is what they wanted to read .

Speaking directly to the reader will help achieve this in an impactful manner (for example referring to them as “you” and asking relevant questions at the right places).

8. Careful selection of words

Choosing the right words is one of the most important things in persuasive writing. Persuasive writing involves creating a bond with the reader through facts and emotions. It involves strong and emotive language (words that describe feelings).

Thus, any wrong choice of word or phrase might discourage the reader from forming a deep and impactful connection with the writer.

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos are at the core of every piece of persuasive writing. Complementing them with the strategies mentioned above will help create an extremely impactful piece of persuasive writing.

We will be using selected addresses from prominent twentieth-century Americans—including Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Margaret Chase Smith, Ronald Reagan, and more—to explore and analyze rhetorical structure and style. Through this analysis, you will learn how speakers and writers persuade an audience to adopt their point of view.

The Purpose of Persuasive Writing

The purpose of persuasion in writing is to convince, motivate, or move readers toward a certain point of view, or opinion. The act of trying to persuade automatically implies more than one opinion on the subject can be argued.

The idea of an argument often conjures up images of two people yelling and screaming in anger. In writing, however, an argument is very different. An argument is a reasoned opinion supported and explained by evidence. To argue in writing is to advance knowledge and ideas in a positive way. Written arguments often fail when they employ ranting rather than reasoning.

Most of us feel inclined to try to win the arguments we engage in. On some level, we all want to be right, and we want others to see the error of their ways. More times than not, however, arguments in which both sides try to win end up producing losers all around. The more productive approach is to persuade your audience to consider your opinion as a valid one, not simply the right one.

The Structure of a Persuasive Essay

The following five features make up the structure of a persuasive essay:

  • Introduction and thesis
  • Opposing and qualifying ideas
  • Strong evidence in support of claim
  • Style and tone of language
  • A compelling conclusion

Creating an Introduction and Thesis

The persuasive essay begins with an engaging introduction that presents the general topic. The thesis typically appears somewhere in the introduction and states the writer’s point of view.

Avoid forming a thesis based on a negative claim. For example, “The hourly minimum wage is not high enough for the average worker to live on.” This is probably a true statement, but persuasive arguments should make a positive case. That is, the thesis statement should focus on how the hourly minimum wage is low or insufficient.

Acknowledging Opposing Ideas and Limits to Your Argument

Because an argument implies differing points of view on the subject, you must be sure to acknowledge those opposing ideas. Avoiding ideas that conflict with your own gives the reader the impression that you may be uncertain, fearful, or unaware of opposing ideas. Thus it is essential that you not only address counterarguments but also do so respectfully.

Try to address opposing arguments earlier rather than later in your essay. Rhetorically speaking, ordering your positive arguments last allows you to better address ideas that conflict with your own, so you can spend the rest of the essay countering those arguments. This way, you leave your reader thinking about your argument rather than someone else’s. You have the last word.

Acknowledging points of view different from your own also has the effect of fostering more credibility between you and the audience. They know from the outset that you are aware of opposing ideas and that you are not afraid to give them space.

It is also helpful to establish the limits of your argument and what you are trying to accomplish. In effect, you are conceding early on that your argument is not the ultimate authority on a given topic. Such humility can go a long way toward earning credibility and trust with an audience. Audience members will know from the beginning that you are a reasonable writer, and audience members will trust your argument as a result. For example, in the following concessionary statement, the writer advocates for stricter gun control laws, but she admits it will not solve all of our problems with crime:

Although tougher gun control laws are a powerful first step in decreasing violence in our streets, such legislation alone cannot end these problems since guns are not the only problem we face.

Such a concession will be welcome by those who might disagree with this writer’s argument in the first place. To effectively persuade their readers, writers need to be modest in their goals and humble in their approach to get readers to listen to the ideas. See Table 10.5 “Phrases of Concession” for some useful phrases of concession.

Try to form a thesis for each of the following topics. Remember the more specific your thesis, the better.

  • Foreign policy
  • Television and advertising
  • Stereotypes and prejudice
  • Gender roles and the workplace
  • Driving and cell phones

Bias in Writing

Everyone has various biases on any number of topics. For example, you might have a bias toward wearing black instead of brightly colored clothes or wearing jeans rather than formal wear. You might have a bias toward working at night rather than in the morning, or working by deadlines rather than getting tasks done in advance. These examples identify minor biases, of course, but they still indicate preferences and opinions.

Handling bias in writing and in daily life can be a useful skill. It will allow you to articulate your own points of view while also defending yourself against unreasonable points of view. The ideal in persuasive writing is to let your reader know your bias, but do not let that bias blind you to the primary components of good argumentation: sound, thoughtful evidence and a respectful and reasonable address of opposing sides.

The strength of a personal bias is that it can motivate you to construct a strong argument. If you are invested in the topic, you are more likely to care about the piece of writing. Similarly, the more you care, the more time and effort you are apt to put forth and the better the final product will be.

The weakness of bias is when the bias begins to take over the essay—when, for example, you neglect opposing ideas, exaggerate your points, or repeatedly insert yourself ahead of the subject by using I too often. Being aware of all three of these pitfalls will help you avoid them.

The Use of I in Writing

The use of I in writing is often a topic of debate, and the acceptance of its usage varies from instructor to instructor. It is difficult to predict the preferences for all your present and future instructors, but consider the effects it can potentially have on your writing.

Be mindful of the use of I in your writing because it can make your argument sound overly biased. There are two primary reasons:

  • Excessive repetition of any word will eventually catch the reader’s attention—and usually not in a good way. The use of I is no different.
  • The insertion of I into a sentence alters not only the way a sentence might sound but also the composition of the sentence itself. I is often the subject of a sentence. If the subject of the essay is supposed to be, say, smoking, then by inserting yourself into the sentence, you are effectively displacing the subject of the essay into a secondary position. In the following example, the subject of the sentence is underlined:

Smoking is bad.

I think smoking is bad.

In the first sentence, the rightful subject, smoking , is in the subject position in the sentence. In the second sentence, the insertion of I and think replaces smoking as the subject, which draws attention to I and away from the topic that is supposed to be discussed. Remember to keep the message (the subject) and the messenger (the writer) separate.

Developing Sound Arguments

Does my essay contain the following elements?

  • An engaging introduction
  • A reasonable, specific thesis that is able to be supported by evidence
  • A varied range of evidence from credible sources
  • Respectful acknowledgement and explanation of opposing ideas
  • A style and tone of language that is appropriate for the subject and audience
  • Acknowledgement of the argument’s limits
  • A conclusion that will adequately summarize the essay and reinforce the thesis

Fact and Opinion

Facts are statements that can be definitely proven using objective data. The statement that is a fact is absolutely valid. In other words, the statement can be pronounced as true or false. For example, 2 + 2 = 4. This expression identifies a true statement, or a fact, because it can be proved with objective data.

Opinions are personal views, or judgments. An opinion is what an individual believes about a particular subject. However, an opinion in argumentation must have legitimate backing; adequate evidence and credibility should support the opinion. Consider the credibility of expert opinions. Experts in a given field have the knowledge and credentials to make their opinion meaningful to a larger audience.

For example, you seek the opinion of your dentist when it comes to the health of your gums, and you seek the opinion of your mechanic when it comes to the maintenance of your car. Both have knowledge and credentials in those respective fields, which is why their opinions matter to you. But the authority of your dentist may be greatly diminished should he or she offer an opinion about your car, and vice versa.

In writing, you want to strike a balance between credible facts and authoritative opinions. Relying on one or the other will likely lose more of your audience than it gains.

The word prove is frequently used in the discussion of persuasive writing. Writers may claim that one piece of evidence or another proves the argument, but proving an argument is often not possible. No evidence proves a debatable topic one way or the other; that is why the topic is debatable. Facts can be proved, but opinions can only be supported, explained, and persuaded.

On a separate sheet of paper, take three of the theses you formed in Note 10.94 “Exercise 1” , and list the types of evidence you might use in support of that thesis.

Using the evidence you provided in support of the three theses in Note 10.100 “Exercise 2” , come up with at least one counterargument to each. Then write a concession statement, expressing the limits to each of your three arguments.

Using Visual Elements to Strengthen Arguments

Adding visual elements to a persuasive argument can often strengthen its persuasive effect. There are two main types of visual elements: quantitative visuals and qualitative visuals.

Quantitative visuals present data graphically. They allow the audience to see statistics spatially. The purpose of using quantitative visuals is to make logical appeals to the audience. For example, sometimes it is easier to understand the disparity in certain statistics if you can see how the disparity looks graphically. Bar graphs, pie charts, Venn diagrams, histograms, and line graphs are all ways of presenting quantitative data in spatial dimensions.

Qualitative visuals present images that appeal to the audience’s emotions. Photographs and pictorial images are examples of qualitative visuals. Such images often try to convey a story, and seeing an actual example can carry more power than hearing or reading about the example. For example, one image of a child suffering from malnutrition will likely have more of an emotional impact than pages dedicated to describing that same condition in writing.

Writing at Work

When making a business presentation, you typically have limited time to get across your idea. Providing visual elements for your audience can be an effective timesaving tool. Quantitative visuals in business presentations serve the same purpose as they do in persuasive writing. They should make logical appeals by showing numerical data in a spatial design. Quantitative visuals should be pictures that might appeal to your audience’s emotions. You will find that many of the rhetorical devices used in writing are the same ones used in the workplace. Writing a Persuasive Essay

Choose a topic that you feel passionate about. If your instructor requires you to write about a specific topic, approach the subject from an angle that interests you. Begin your essay with an engaging introduction. Your thesis should typically appear somewhere in your introduction.

Start by acknowledging and explaining points of view that may conflict with your own to build credibility and trust with your audience. Also state the limits of your argument. This too helps you sound more reasonable and honest to those who may naturally be inclined to disagree with your view. By respectfully acknowledging opposing arguments and conceding limitations to your own view, you set a measured and responsible tone for the essay.

Make your appeals in support of your thesis by using sound, credible evidence. Use a balance of facts and opinions from a wide range of sources, such as scientific studies, expert testimony, statistics, and personal anecdotes. Each piece of evidence should be fully explained and clearly stated.

Make sure that your style and tone are appropriate for your subject and audience. Tailor your language and word choice to these two factors, while still being true to your own voice.

Finally, write a conclusion that effectively summarizes the main argument and reinforces your thesis. See Chapter 15 “Readings: Examples of Essays” to read a sample persuasive essay.

Choose one of the topics you have been working on throughout this section. Use the thesis, evidence, opposing argument, and concessionary statement as the basis for writing a full persuasive essay. Be sure to include an engaging introduction, clear explanations of all the evidence you present, and a strong conclusion.

Persuasive Strategies and Devices

There are common persuasion techniques sometimes referred to as persuasive devices that can be used to back up an argument in writing . Knowing the names of the strategies and how they work can make it easier to remember them when it’s time to write. The five common persuasive strategies are:

  • Pathos: Pathos involves using emotional language that is designed to draw the reader in and make them feel for you. For example: "If my allowance isn’t increased, I won’t be able to go out with my friends and do everything they do."
  • Big Names: The big names strategy involves using the names of experts or well-known people who support your position. For example: "Dad agrees that increasing my allowance will..."
  • Research and Logos: These strategies involve using studies, data, charts , illustrations, and logic to back up her position and points. For example: "As you can see in the pie chart, at my age the average child’s allowance is..."
  • Ethos: The ethos strategy of persuasion involves using language that shows that the writer is trustworthy and believable. For example: "As you may recall, I’ve always been willing to put ten percent of my allowance in my bank account, thus..."
  • Kairos: This type of argument creates a sense of urgency about how this is the right moment to act. For example: "If I don’t get an increase in my allowance today, I will miss out on the chance to..."

Phrases and Words to Use in Persuasive Writing

Once your child has figured out the techniques she can use in her persuasive writing, she will need to find some words and phrases that help her to be convincing. Using phrases like "I think" or "It seems that" don’t convey a sense of confidence in her position. Instead, she needs to use word combinations that show how much she believes in what she is writing.

Writers can also use a personal short story as an example to further emphasize their points. For instance, if someone was trying to argue why forgiving others for making mistakes is essential, they could recount an experience where they were forgiven and how this experience positively changed their life. Such stories may cultivate an emotional investment in hearing your argument and make it more likely others will be convinced.

Literary devices

Writing persuasively is often considered an art and can require a blend of several techniques. Literary devices may be especially effective in persuasive writing, affording writers creative ways to hook readers and illustrate their points. 

Rhetorical questions are also widely used in persuasive writing to convince readers to think about an issue from a particular perspective. For example, if advocating for animal rights, a writer may use rhetorical questions such as “Do animals deserve better?” or “What would you do if someone treated you like that?” to make people consider the issue from a humane perspective. Using rhetorical questions, the writer can create an emotional connection between the reader and their argument.

Metaphors can also be helpful literary devices for persuasive writing. Metaphors enable writers to paint vivid images in the reader's mind and help them understand abstract concepts with tangible examples. For example, when advocating for environmentalism, one could use metaphors such as “Our planet is like a garden—we must nurture it with care” or “The future of our planet is like a fragile flower—it needs attention now before it wilts away” to create potent mental images that drive home the main point. By leveraging these techniques effectively, writers may have a greater chance of successfully conveying their message and inspiring readers.

Logical reasoning 

Logical reasoning is a persuasive writing technique commonly used to influence people and encourage them to act. This technique involves presenting evidence logically by providing facts, numbers, research data, and other relevant, verifiable information. When combined with more creative techniques such as literary devices and emotional appeal, logical reasoning may build credibility and establish one’s ideas as a trusted source of information. 

Successful use of logical reasoning may require the writer to present a clear and consistent argument and utilize accurate information supported by reputable sources. Effective use of this technique can highlight the strengths of one's point of view while using trusted, verifiable sources that reinforce the validity of one’s claims. The goal may be to ensure that all claims are supported by evidence to establish a writer as a trusted authority on the topic. 

The hierarchy of human needs

The hierarchy of human needs was first outlined by psychologist Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper, “A Theory of Human Motivation.” The hierarchy suggests that people are motivated by five needs, including the following: 

  • Physiological (i.e., food, oxygen, water)
  • Love and belonging
  • Self-actualization

Each layer of the hierarchy of needs builds upon prior layers. For example, self-actualization becomes a stronger motivator once all other needs are met. Understanding these basic needs may allow writers to develop more effective persuasive techniques in their writing. 

For instance, if a writer is trying to persuade an audience to purchase a product or service for their well-being, they might first focus on meeting the need for safety and security before discussing features and benefits related to esteem or self-actualization. By understanding which motivators will be most effective for each audience member, writers can tailor persuasive messages that speak directly to each reader’s needs. 

Understanding the importance of empathy as a persuasive technique may also help writers better connect with their readership. When crafting compelling pieces for any audience, a writer can empathize with the basic needs all humans share. In doing so, writers present information in a relatable manner that may speak directly to the reader instead of just telling them what they “should” do or think about a particular topic. 

By taking the time to understand the hierarchy of human needs and the value of empathy when crafting persuasive pieces, writers can have a guide for presenting their ideas in a way that cuts through the noise and speaks to the real-life needs of fellow humans. 

How persuasive writing may improve mental health

Persuasive writing techniques can be used to improve mental health through increased self-confidence and the reduction of indecisiveness and insecurity. With persuasive techniques, people may establish a more confident mindset by recognizing their strengths and using them to create compelling and convincing arguments. Additionally, they can learn how to use evidence-based strategies to confidently create a persuasive letter and engage in public discourse surrounding topics they care about. 

In one study, researchers looked at the role of loneliness and a lack of social skills in the development of mental illness among college-aged students. They found that rates of loneliness were a reliable indicator of rates of depression and anxiety. This study exemplifies the benefits of cultivating social and communication skills in forming meaningful connections. 

Through the process of persuasive writing, individuals may become less hesitant to socialize and speak out due to an improved understanding of why specific options are better for their well-being than others. Furthermore, persuasive writing may build up a person’s internal dialogue in which they tell themselves stories that boost their self-esteem. Cognitive abilities may lead individuals toward healthier behaviors, resulting in more significant happiness and peace of mind.

The benefits of improving persuasive writing and communication skills may include the following: 

  • Improved self-esteem and confidence in expressing ideas
  • An increased ability to identify the needs of others and empathize with their point of view
  • Enhanced communication skills, which can lead to better relationships with colleagues, friends, and family members
  • Greater impact when communicating messages to an audience 
  • The ability to influence others without using aggression or manipulation

However, some people may avoid in-person therapy due to being busy, facing financial challenges, and other accessibility barriers. In these cases, online therapy may be beneficial. Online therapy can be an empowering setting for developing healthy persuasive techniques essential to successful communication. 

With the help of an experienced therapist, individuals may gain insight into their point of view, develop greater self-awareness, and hone their ability to relate to others. Furthermore, they may learn to differentiate between manipulation and persuasion to engage in ethical and respectful dialogue. Through online therapy platforms like BetterHelp , users can set virtual meetings at times conducive to their schedules and choose between phone, video, or live chat sessions with their therapist. 

In one study, researchers looked at the ability of online therapy to improve social functioning and reduce symptoms of depression. This study illustrates the ability of online-based interventions to provide individuals with an accessible way to improve their communication skills and make progress in reducing symptoms of mental health conditions.

GDEV 5045 Data and Development

Course description.

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2023-2024 . Courses of Study 2024-2025 is scheduled to publish mid-June.

Development is inherently a multidisciplinary and applied field, one that requires academics, practitioners, and policymakers to consider and consult a wide range of information, data, perspectives, and questions. But how do policymakers use data to make informed decisions? How do practitioners use data to inform program development and practice? What sources and types of data do they use? What is the role of data in grant writing, assessment and evaluation, and in communicating policy issues to the public? What questions can (and can't) data help answer? Students in this class will learn about the role of data in community development practice, programming, and policy, and connections to asset- and needs-based assessments and frameworks.

  • Integrate data-analytic work with knowledge of development, including how communities function and interact between individuals and state and national and global enablers and constraints.

It’s not a lack of desire or inspiration that keeps them from doing it. It’s lack of time, unfamiliarity with the industry, and the intimidation of a blank page. But in the age of generative AI and modern publishing, the arduous journey from a blank page to a published book is no longer what it used to be.

How To Use AI To Enhance The Book-Writing Process

Many of the titles we know and love are ghostwritten by other people. That doesn’t mean the book isn’t from the author or isn’t their words. On the contrary, a talented ghostwriter amplifies the author’s voice.

AI can do something similar: Help us extract the ideas we have in our head and piece them together for a book. AI's role is therefore less about writing the book and more about enhancing the ability to start and finish one.

• Ideation: AI can help overcome the dreaded blank page syndrome. By inputting a theme or a basic premise, AI can suggest creative ideas, character arcs or even entire story outlines to kickstart the creative process.

• Structuring: Organizing a book can be daunting. AI can help in outlining chapters, suggesting narrative structures and even advising on pacing and plot progression.

• Research: AI can swiftly summarize relevant information, provide historical context or even suggest thematic material, significantly reducing the time spent on research. It can also review your writing and poke holes in your arguments.

• Language And Style: For those struggling with grammar, sentence structure or stylistic elements, AI tools offer real-time suggestions for improvement, enhancing the readability and professionalism of the text.

• Character And Plot Development: Especially in fiction, crafting compelling characters and plots is vital. AI can suggest character traits, plot twists or even dialogue options, enriching the narrative.

AI Tools To Help Write Your Book

The market has become saturated with AI writing aids, each offering unique features. You can do some online research to discover many more, but I'll focus on three of my recommendations below.

Use Perplexity For Research

While Perplexity AI utilizes a combination of its own proprietary and existing AI models to power its services, its real strength is providing the most current information available, making it akin to having an up-to-date news reporter at your disposal. It’s like having a team of virtual assistants Googling and researching on your behalf.

• Pros: Fast and reliable research with citations, real-time information, contextual understanding, versatility.

• Cons: Content creation, rewriting, chain prompting.

Use ChatGPT For Writing

The paid version of ChatGPT continues to be a leading tool for a variety of writing tasks. It’s easy to use and is the most popular tool, in part because of its Custom GPTs feature.

• Pros: Content creation, ideation, rewriting, plot structure, chain prompting, custom GPTs.

• Cons: Can’t analyze large amounts of text, not great at research.

Use Claude For Analysis

Claude is unique in that it has a very large context window, allowing you to enter more than 5X the information compared to ChatGPT. This means you can reference significant portions of your manuscript for consistency, coherence and plot holes so you can make improvements on pacing and structure. Claude can also analyze large PDF files (think ebooks) to assist with research.

• Pros: Analyzing large chunks of text, analyzing PDFs, character development, consistency.

• Cons: Content creation, rewriting, less well-known.

Tips for Using AI To Help Write Your Book

Get good at prompting..

The quality of your prompt will define the quality of the output. The better you get at prompting AI with the right questions, the better answers you’ll receive.

Blend AI suggestions with your creativity.

AI tools provide suggestions; it's your job to select, refine and integrate these into your book. Use AI-generated ideas as a springboard for your creativity, not a replacement.

Maintain authenticity.

While using AI, it's essential to retain your voice and ensure the story reflects your vision. AI should augment your narrative, not define it. When overused, generative AI tends to flatten your voice, not enhance it.

Integrate with traditional writing practices.

AI tools are most effective when used in conjunction with human intuition, creativity and editorial judgment. Regular writing routines, feedback from peers or mentors and personal reflections are just as crucial in the writing process as AI assistance.

Embracing AI As A Collaborative Partner In Writing

AI in book writing offers a new way to enhance your creative process, break through barriers and bring about more efficiency. However, the heart of your book—its message, emotion and connection with readers—comes from you, the author.

Over-reliance on AI can lead to homogenized content that doesn’t interest or help readers. Even when used appropriately, it’s still important to work with professional editors to elevate your manuscript from good to great. Looking ahead, AI's role in writing is poised to grow. We can anticipate more sophisticated AI tools that offer even more nuanced suggestions and insights. However, the essence of storytelling will still remain a profoundly human endeavor.

International writers guilds representing 67,000 professional screen writers across the globe are collaborating on developing an “ethical framework” for the use of AI in screenwriting.

The Federation of Screenwriters in Europe (FSE) and the International Affiliation of Writers Guilds (IAWG) have set out five principles on AI in scriptwriting, passing a joint resolution that will be binding on their member guilds in countries including North America, Europe, India, Israel, Korea, New Zealand and South Africa.

FSE represents 32 organization from 26 European countries while IAWG is made up of 14 members from 12 countries including WGA East and WGA West.

“While we applaud the work of the EU to enact the AI Act, there are unresolved issues with respect to the unauthorized use of our intellectual property for training large language models, and uncertainty regarding authorship and copyright of machine-generated script material,” said Carolin Otto, a German screenwriter and president of FSE. “We intend to voice our concerns in both national and global policy arenas, as well as develop standard language film and television writers can demand in their contracts.”
