Advertisement: Construction and Communication of Memory (A Study on Media Advertisement in Malayalam—An Indian Language)

Heritage is a cultural capital of society. Memory, literally nostalgia is what sustains and communicates. Precisely concepts which are widely shared and communicated as collective memories, prototypes and linked to objective manifestations are called cultural heritage. Memory or nostalgia shapes the present and sculpts the future “trends” socially and culturally. Memory is an intense subjective stimulus and hence an indefatigable link between the cultural and biological milieus of society. “Memory is an indispensable condition of effective human life” (Bennet in New Keywords: A revised vocabulary of 497 culture and society. Blackwell, 2005 : 214). Market strategies and advertisement media continually target collective memories for conceptualisation and communication according to contemporary likes and dislikes. This market strategy of microphysics is memory. The end products are methodified at micro-levels within the space of media advertising. Multicultural identities involving castes, religion, women and environment are constructed and reconstructed. In this article, I would like to explain advertising is a subject to an analytical study as to the mechanics of social discourse which is being constructed and communicated through memories.

വായന മനുഷ്യര്ക്കു മാത്രം സാധ്യമാകുന്ന ഒരത്ഭുത സിദ്ധിയാണ്. അറിവ് നേടുന്നതിനുള്ള പ്രധാന മാര്ഗവും വായനതന്നെ. അറിവിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യത്തെപ്പറ്റി ഭഗവദ്ഗീതയില് പറയുന്നത് ഇപ്രകാരമാണ് - ‘നഹി ജ്ഞാനേന സദൃശ്യം പവിത്രമിഹ വിദ്യതേ’. മനസ്സിലെ മാലിന്യങ്ങള് അകറ്റാന് അറിവിനു പകരം മറ്റൊരുപായമില്ല എന്നാണ്.
വായനയിലൂടെ നേടുന്ന അറിവാണ് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ആയുധം. ബെര്ത്തോള്ഡ് ബ്രെഹ്ത് പറഞ്ഞത് ‘വിശക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യാ, പുസ്തകം കയ്യിലെടുക്കൂ. അതൊരു ആയുധമാണ്’ എന്ന ശക്തമായ വാക്കുകളാണ്. ഒരുപക്ഷേ, ‘വാളല്ലെന് സമരായുധം’ എന്ന് നമ്മുടെ പ്രിയ കവി വയലാറിനെക്കൊണ്ടു പാടിച്ചതു പോലും ഇത്തരം ഒരു ചിന്താഗതി തന്നെയായിരിക്കണം.
ദിവസം ഒരു മണിക്കൂറെങ്കിലും വായിക്കാത്ത മലയാളികൾ ചുരുക്കമായിരിക്കുമെന്നാണ് എന്റെ നിഗമനം. പത്രം, വാരിക, കഥാപുസ്തകങ്ങള് എന്നിവയാണ് വായിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രധാന മാധ്യമങ്ങള്. ഇതു മൂന്നും കയ്യിലെടുക്കാത്തവരും വായിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്- ഇ വായന. വാട്സാപ്പില് വരുന്ന ചെറുകുറിപ്പുകള് മതിമറന്നു വായിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരെയും നമുക്കു വായനക്കാരെന്നു വിളിക്കാം. ഓരോ വായനയിലൂടെയും ലഭിക്കുന്നത് ഓരോ തരം അറിവാണ്. ഓരോരുത്തരും അവരവരുടെ അഭിരുചി അനുസരിച്ചായിരിക്കുമല്ലോ വായനാ വിഷയം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നതും.
സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വളര്ച്ചയുടെ സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തിലാണ് മനുഷ്യര് ആശയവിനിമയത്തിന് അക്ഷരങ്ങളും അക്ഷരങ്ങള് ചേര്ത്ത് വാക്കുകളും വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ വാചകങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടാക്കിത്തുടങ്ങിയത്. സംസാരഭാഷ രേഖപ്പെടുത്താന് മാര്ഗം കണ്ടെത്തിയതോടെ മനുഷ്യരുടെ വായനയും ആരംഭിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇവിടെ വായിക്കാന് പഠിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്പുതന്നെ എഴുതാന് മനുഷ്യന് പഠിച്ചു എന്നുവേണം കരുതാന്. മനുഷ്യസഹജമായ സൗന്ദര്യാവിഷ്കരണ കൗതുകത്തില് നിന്നാവാം എഴുത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവം.
ആദിമ മനുഷ്യര് കല്ലിലും മണ്ണിലും എഴുത്തു തുടങ്ങി. ഗുഹാമുഖങ്ങളില് ആശയങ്ങള് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി. ചിത്രലിപികളില്നിന്ന് അക്ഷരങ്ങളിലേക്കു മാറിയതോടെ ആശയവിനിമയം കൂടുതല് ഫലവത്തായി. ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളില് മതപരമോ രാഷ്ട്രീയമോ ആയ കാര്യങ്ങള് എഴുതി. പില്ക്കാലത്ത് മണ്കട്ടകളിൽ എഴുത്ത് തുടങ്ങിയതോടെ വായനയ്ക്കു പൊതു മാര്ഗങ്ങളുണ്ടായി. മൃഗത്തോലിലും മരപ്പലകയിലും എഴുത്തു തുടര്ന്നപ്പോള് എഴുതിയത് കൈമാറാനും കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കാനും എളുപ്പമായി. പിന്നീടത് മരത്തോലിലും ഓലകളിലുമായി. ചൊല്ലിക്കേട്ട കാവ്യങ്ങളും കഥകളും വായിക്കാൻ പുതിയ മാര്ഗ്ഗം തേടിയതിങ്ങനെയാണ്. പന്ത്രണ്ടായിരത്തോളം വര്ഷങ്ങള്ക്ക് മുന്പാണ് അക്ഷരലിപികള് മണ്കട്ടയിലേക്കും പിന്നീട് ഓലകളിലേക്കുമൊക്കെ പടര്ന്നു കയറിയത്.
വായനയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ നിര്ണായകമായ ഘട്ടം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് കടലാസും അച്ചടിയും കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചതോടെയാണ്. ഋഷികളില്നിന്നും പണ്ഡിതന്മാരില് നിന്നും വായന സാധാരണക്കാരിലേക്കു നീങ്ങിയത് അങ്ങനെയാണ്. കാവ്യങ്ങളും കഥകളും അങ്ങനെ ലോകമാകെ സാംസ്കാരികമായ വിപ്ലവമായി മാറി. അച്ചടിവിദ്യയിലെ സാങ്കേതിക വളര്ച്ച ഒരു ഗ്രന്ഥത്തെ ഒരേസമയം പലരിലുമെത്തിച്ചു. വായന ചിന്താശേഷിയുടെയും സര്ഗ്ഗപ്രക്രിയയുടെയും നവീനമാര്ഗമായി മാറിയതിന് ഏതാനും നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളുടെ പഴക്കം മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ. കുറഞ്ഞ കാലം കൊണ്ട് വായന മനുഷ്യവര്ഗത്തിന്റെ ഉന്നതമായ വികാസ പരിണാമത്തിന് കാരണമാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. മനുഷ്യരുടെ ബുദ്ധിപരമായ വളര്ച്ചയും ചിന്താശക്തിയും അപഗ്രഥനശേഷിയും വായനയിലൂടെയാണ് വികസിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്ന് വായന പുതിയ രൂപങ്ങള് തേടുന്നു. പുസ്തകവായന കംപ്യൂട്ടറിലേക്കും ലാപ്ടോപ് റീഡിങ്ങിലേക്കും മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു. വായനയുടെ വികാസ പരിണാമമറിഞ്ഞ്, കുട്ടികളെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നത് പലതുകൊണ്ടും പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതായിരിക്കുന്നു.
വായന എന്ന വാക്കു കേള്ക്കുമ്പോള് മലയാളികളുടെ മനസ്സില് ആദ്യം ഓടിയെത്തുന്നത് പി.എന്. പണിക്കര് എന്ന അക്ഷര മഹര്ഷിയുടെ നാമമാണ്.
ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരിക്കടുത്തുള്ള നീലംപേരൂരില് ജനിച്ച പണിക്കര് മലയാളം ഹയര് പരീക്ഷ പാസായശേഷം, സനാതനധര്മ വായനശാലയുടെയും പി.കെ. മെമ്മോറിയൽ ഗ്രന്ഥശാലയുടെയും സ്ഥാപകനും ആദ്യ സെക്രട്ടറിയുമായിരുന്നു. 1945-ല്, അന്നു നിലവിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന 47 ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളിലെ പ്രവര്ത്തകരുടെ സമ്മേളനം വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി. ആ സമ്മേളനത്തിന്റെ തീരുമാനപ്രകാരം 1947-ല് രൂപീകൃതമായ തിരു-കൊച്ചി ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാസംഘമാണ് 1957-ല് കേരള ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ സംഘമായത്. പണിക്കര് മുഴുവന് സമയ ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ പ്രവര്ത്തകനായി. ‘വായിച്ചുവളരുക, ചിന്തിച്ചു വിവേകം നേടുക’ എന്നീ മുദ്രാവാക്യങ്ങളുമായി 1972-ല് ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ സംഘത്തിന്റെ രജതജൂബിലി ആഘോഷത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച സാംസ്കാരിക ജാഥയ്ക്കും അദ്ദേഹം നേതൃത്വം നൽകി.
ദീര്ഘകാലം കേരളഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ സംഘം സെക്രട്ടറിയായും അതിന്റെ മുഖപത്രമായ ഗ്രന്ഥാലോകത്തിന്റെ പത്രാധിപരായും പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ച പണിക്കര് 1977-ല് ആ സ്ഥാനത്തുനിന്നു വിരമിച്ചു. 1978 മുതല് അനൗപചാരിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ വികസനത്തിനുവേണ്ടി പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന കാന്ഫെഡിന്റെ സെക്രട്ടറിയായും സ്റ്റേറ്റ് റീഡേഴ്സ് സെന്ററിന്റെ ഓണററി എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് ഡയറക്ടറായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. കാന്ഫെഡ് ന്യൂസ്, അനൗപചാരിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, നാട്ടുവെളിച്ചം, നമ്മുടെ പത്രം എന്നിവയുടെ പത്രാധിപത്യവും വഹിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചരമദിനമായ ജൂണ് 19 കേരളം വായനാദിനമായി ആചരിക്കുന്നു.
കാലഘട്ടം മാറിയതോടെ വായനയിലും മാറ്റങ്ങള് ഉണ്ടായി. ഇന്ന് ഇ-വായനയുടെ കാലമാണ്. ബുദ്ധിയെയും ഭാവനയെയും വികസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വായന, കുട്ടികളില് ശീലമാക്കാന് രക്ഷാകര്ത്താക്കള് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. നിര്ഭാഗ്യവശാല് ഇന്നത്തെ മിക്ക രക്ഷാകര്ത്താക്കളും പാഠപുസ്തകങ്ങള് മാത്രം വായിക്കാനാണ് കുട്ടികളെ നിര്ബന്ധിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല് അതിനപ്പുറമുള്ള പരന്ന വായനയാണ് കുട്ടിയുടെ സ്വാഭാവിക വ്യക്തിത്വത്തെ വളര്ത്തുന്നത്. ചെരുപ്പുകുത്തിയില്നിന്ന് അമേരിക്കന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ആയി മാറിയ എബ്രഹാം ലിങ്കനും രാമേശ്വേരത്തെ പത്രവിതരണക്കാര് പയ്യനില്നിന്ന് ഇന്ത്യന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ആയി മാറിയ എ.പി.ജെ. അബ്ദുൽ കലാമും തങ്ങളുടെ വിജയഘടകത്തിലൊന്നായി പറയുന്നത് പരന്ന വായനയാണ്. ലോകത്ത് മഹാന്മാരായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നവരെല്ലാം നല്ല വായനക്കാരും ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളുടെ ഗുണഭോക്താക്കളുമാണ്.
നമ്മുടെ കുട്ടികളും ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളില് പോകട്ടെ, ഇഷ്ടമുള്ളതു തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു വായിക്കട്ടെ, രക്ഷാകര്ത്താക്കളുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷയ്ക്കുമപ്പുറം വളരട്ടെ. അതിന് പുറംവായനയ്ക്കു വേണ്ട സൗകര്യങ്ങള് രക്ഷാകര്ത്താക്കള് ഒരുക്കണം.

Heritage is a cultural capital of society. Memory, literally nostalgia is what sustains and communicates. Precisely concepts which are widely shared and communicated as collective memories, prototypes and linked to objective manifestations are called cultural heritage. Memory or nostalgia shapes the present and sculpts the future “trends” socially and culturally. Memory is an intense subjective stimulus and hence an indefatigable link between the cultural and biological milieus of society. “Memory is an indispensable condition of effective human life” (Bennet in New Keywords: A revised vocabulary of 497 culture and society. Blackwell, 2005 : 214). Market strategies and advertisement media continually target collective memories for conceptualisation and communication according to contemporary likes and dislikes. This market strategy of microphysics is memory. The end products are methodified at micro-levels within the space of media advertising. Multicultural identities involving castes, religion, women and environment are constructed and reconstructed. In this article, I would like to explain advertising is a subject to an analytical study as to the mechanics of social discourse which is being constructed and communicated through memories.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has successfully conducted the CBSE Class 10 Hindi board exam today, February 21, 2024. As per the initial reactions, students found the paper was moderate in terms of difficulty level. The paper was held for three hours, and students were given another 15 minutes to go through it.
"The paper was slightly lengthy. The questions weren't anything that hadn't been practised in class before. The grammar section was moderate and the topics that had come for the writing section weren't anything too different from those in the sample papers" said Saanvi Singh, a Class 10 student from Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Lucknow.

THERE are few things more frustrating than trying to recall a fact or memory and finding it has gone missing. You might ask yourself whether it is the start of mental decline or the onset of a degenerative brain condition. What you probably don’t think is that forgetting is a good thing. But it can be. New research into memory suggests that it is actually a healthy and necessary brain function – and one that is becoming increasingly important in our rapidly changing lives. “You want to be able to adapt to your environment because your environment is always changing. But if you’re overly fixated on your first experience, you’re not going to behave adaptively,” says Tomás Ryan at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Intriguingly, his research also hints that forgotten memories remain in the brain, so could, if necessary, be restored.
Everyday forgetting – like not being able to recall what you ate for dinner last week – is called natural forgetting. This is in contrast to pathological forgetting, which results from brain injuries or conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Far from being a problem, natural forgetting underpins one of our most unique and powerful traits – our ability to generalise. China conducts first nationwide review of retractions and research misconduct

Chinese universities are days away from the deadline to complete a nationwide audit of retracted research papers and probe of research misconduct. By 15 February, universities must submit to the government a comprehensive list of all academic articles retracted from English- and Chinese-language journals in the past three years. They need to clarify why the papers were retracted and investigate cases involving misconduct, according to a 20 November notice from the Ministry of Education’s Department of Science, Technology and Informatization.
The government launched the nationwide self-review in response to Hindawi, a London-based subsidiary of the publisher Wiley, retracting a large number of papers by Chinese authors. These retractions, along with those from other publishers, “have adversely affected our country’s academic reputation and academic environment”, the notice states.
A Nature analysis shows that last year, Hindawi issued more than 9,600 retractions, of which the vast majority — about 8,200 — had a co-author in China. Nearly 14,000 retraction notices, of which some three-quarters involved a Chinese co-author, were issued by all publishers in 2023.
This is “the first time we’ve seen such a national operation on retraction investigations”, says Xiaotian Chen, a library and information scientist at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, who has studied retractions and research misconduct in China. Previous investigations have largely been carried out on a case-by-case basis — but this time, all institutions have to conduct their investigations simultaneously, says Chen.
Tight deadline
The ministry’s notice set off a chain of alerts, cascading to individual university departments. Bulletins posted on university websites required researchers to submit their retractions by a range of dates, mostly in January — leaving time for universities to collate and present the data.
Although the alerts included lists of retractions that the ministry or the universities were aware of, they also called for unlisted retractions to be added.
More than 10,000 research papers were retracted in 2023 — a new record
According to Nature ’s analysis, which includes only English-language journals, more than 17,000 retraction notices for papers published by Chinese co-authors have been issued since 1 January 2021, which is the start of the period of review specified in the notice. The analysis, an update of one conducted in December , used the Retraction Watch database, augmented with retraction notices collated from the Dimensions database, and involved assistance from Guillaume Cabanac, a computer scientist at the University of Toulouse in France. It is unclear whether the official lists contain the same number of retracted papers.
Regardless, the timing to submit the information will be tight, says Shu Fei, a bibliometrics scientist at Hangzhou Dianzi University in China. The ministry gave universities less than three months to complete their self-review — and this was cut shorter by the academic winter break, which typically starts in mid-January and concludes after the Chinese New Year, which fell this year on 10 February.
“The timing is not good,” he says. Shu expects that universities are most likely to submit only a preliminary report of their researchers’ retracted papers included on the official lists.
But Wang Fei, who studies research-integrity policy at Dalian University of Technology in China, says that because the ministry has set a deadline, universities will work hard to submit their findings on time.
Researchers with retracted papers will have to explain whether the retraction was owing to misconduct, such as image manipulation, or an honest mistake, such as authors identifying errors in their own work, says Chen: “In other words, they may have to defend themselves.” Universities then must investigate and penalize misconduct. If a researcher fails to declare their retracted paper and it is later uncovered, they will be punished, according to the ministry notice. The cost of not reporting is high, says Chen. “This is a very serious measure.”
It is not known what form punishment might take, but in 2021, China’s National Health Commission posted the results of its investigations into a batch of retracted papers. Punishments included salary cuts, withdrawal of bonuses, demotions and timed suspensions from applying for research grants and rewards.
The notice states explicitly that the first corresponding author of a paper is responsible for submitting the response. This requirement will largely address the problem of researchers shirking responsibility for collaborative work, says Li Tang, a science- and innovation-policy researcher at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. The notice also emphasizes due process, says Tang. Researchers alleged to have committed misconduct have a right to appeal during the investigation.
The notice is a good approach for addressing misconduct, says Wang. Previous efforts by the Chinese government have stopped at issuing new research-integrity guidelines that were poorly implemented, she says. And when government bodies did launch self-investigations of published literature, they were narrower in scope and lacked clear objectives. This time, the target is clear — retractions — and the scope is broad, involving the entire university research community, she says.
“Cultivating research integrity takes time, but China is on the right track,” says Tang.
It is not clear what the ministry will do with the flurry of submissions. Wang says that, because the retraction notices are already freely available, publicizing the collated lists and underlying reasons for retraction could be useful. She hopes that a similar review will be conducted every year “to put more pressure” on authors and universities to monitor research integrity.
What happens next will reveal how seriously the ministry regards research misconduct, says Shu. He suggests that, if the ministry does not take further action after the Chinese New Year, the notice could be an attempt to respond to the reputational damage caused by the mass retractions last year.
The ministry did not respond to Nature ’s questions about the misconduct investigation.
Chen says that, regardless of what the ministry does with the information, the reporting process itself will help to curb misconduct because it is “embarrassing to the people in the report”.
But it might primarily affect researchers publishing in English-language journals. Retraction notices in Chinese-language journals are rare.

With the rapid development in the advanced research of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the regulation of perovskite crystallinity and defect states has become increasingly crucial to further enhance the performance of PSCs. As a result, the optimized PSCs exhibited excellent PCE, V OC and FF. Furthermore, the optimized PSCs with NFA IML show an outstanding stability compared to the control devices under the same working conditions. This work provides a facile method to tune the crystallization and reduce the defects to improve the performance of PSCs.

The CBSE Class 10 board exams for major subjects commence today with the Hindi paper. The exams for Hindi-A and Hindi-B papers are scheduled to take place from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
Subsequently, the next major subject exam will be held on February 26 for English. On February 23, the board will conduct exams for National Cadet Corps, Telugu-Telangana, Bodo, Tangkhul, Japanese, Bhutia, Spanish, Kashmiri, Mizo, Bahasa Melayu, and on February 24 for Punjabi, Sindhi, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Kannada, Kokborok.

The CBSE has instructed center superintendents to ensure compliance with exam guidelines, arranging seating for Hindi-A and Hindi-B students separately, and distributing respective question papers correctly. Answer books for Hindi-A and Hindi-B will be packed separately.
Schools are urged to report observations and exam-related issues annually, with the board stressing the use of the OECMS platform for submissions. Additionally, schools are advised to send observations on the same day as the exam to [email protected] for clarification if needed.
Instructions to be followed by center superintendents:
- Seating arrangements are to be done according to the subjects offered by the students.
- Hindi-A students should be allotted seats together, and likewise, Hindi-B students should be allotted seats together.
- Students offered Hindi-A should be given the question paper of Hindi-A, and students offered Hindi-B should be given the question paper of Hindi-B. No mistakes should be made in the distribution of question papers.
- After the examination is over, answer books will also be packed separately for Hindi-A and Hindi-B.
- The subject mentioned on the admit card of the students is final, and they should only be allowed to appear in the same subject as mentioned on the admit card. The subject cannot be changed by the examination center.
CBSE Board Exams 2024 for both classes 10 and 12 began on February 15, with Class 10 exams concluding on March 13 and Class 12 exams on April 2.

Re “ To Save Museums, Treat Them Like Highways ,” by Laura Raicovich and Laura Hanna (Opinion guest essay, Feb. 11):
The writers have a clever idea to camouflage cultural funding by equating it with highway building and maintenance. I applaud their ingenuity: Fixing a leaky roof is less controversial than supporting the art on the walls or the movie screens below.
Executive directors of every arts organization waste vast amounts of time, energy, talent (and money!) raising money. During the pandemic, the government through various programs awarded generous amounts based on the budget of the nonprofit, saving many of us from disaster.
A similar approach, rather than the National Endowment for the Arts’ minuscule budget, apportioning funds according to highly subjective criteria, would make sense. Unfortunately, this does not resolve the underlying problem of why Americans put so little value on the arts.

Laura Raicovich and Laura Hanna wrote that we need to stop treating museums, theaters and galleries like sacred spaces and start treating them more like infrastructure.
Research that identifies museums as “third places” supports this idea. Museums are public spaces where people go to learn new things, to engage with one another, to explore ideas. Reports released in 2021 by both the American Alliance of Museums and the Institute of Museum and Library Services found that Americans trust museums and the information they share.
But like book bans that threaten libraries, another “third place,” museum funding that is guided by politics or power threatens access to art and ideas. Conscious or unconscious bias leads to distrust.
We all experience art, theater and books through personal lenses shaped by our backgrounds, families and education. Museums, like libraries, don’t tell us what to think. They provide access to information and invite us to make up our own minds.
Art allows us to reflect, feel, learn. It gives physical form to ideas. Like our community streets, museums build connections. Funding museums like infrastructure can help information flow.

A number of years ago, my wife and I took a trip to visit England. While she attended various workshops, I toured a number of local museums. I was most impressed by the quality, presentation, content and scholarship on display.
I asked each curator how they accomplished such professional presentations. Each time the response was “We get funds from the national lottery!” Simple, right? It’s not rocket science, so why not in America?
Here’s the rub … politics! We do not have a national lottery that helps finance the arts, but the authors of the essay are on the right track.

Re “ Biden Faces Push to Stop Steel Merger ” (Business, Feb. 17):
Regarding the proposed purchase of U.S. Steel by Nippon Steel, it’s noted that both companies are behind on decarbonizing steel production. A ruling against this purchase is a dubious way to address the issue of greenhouse emissions in steel production.
The first consideration for decarbonizing steel production is cost. If the capital cost is high, and the return on investment is low, an investment in decarbonization may harm a company’s competitiveness. That discourages or delays the adoption of low-emission technologies.
This is why emissions in steelmaking would be best addressed with a price on fossil-based carbon, through federally enacted policy. That would encourage all steel companies to invest in low-emission production, which would be critical for maintaining competitiveness.
Putting a price on carbon, preferably using a carbon fee and dividend policy , will avoid conundrums such as this steel merger, where we try to fix an emissions problem with the wrong policy handle, in this case foreign investment policy. With a price on carbon there would be no climate concerns about this deal, an investment by a strong ally in a U.S. company needing capital and technology upgrades.

Re “ Another Political Failure on Immigration ” (editorial, Feb. 3):
While Trumplicans stonewall on a bipartisan deal to help with the immigration problem, President Biden should offer a new deal on immigration for America and call it A Better Deal for Small-Town America.
Instead of strengthening the border and restricting asylum and legal immigration, Mr. Biden should offer Americans a chance to revive small-town America (the heart and soul of the country), solve the crisis at the border, and do the right thing for the millions seeking to work and find a better life in America.
Take a drive on two-lane roads across America and one will find thousands of small towns, ghost towns really, shells of what they used to be, struggling to keep a grocery store, a senior living center, a pharmacy or the one cafe open; plow the streets; fix the sidewalks; or mow the grass at the cemetery.
Establish a nationwide program to place immigrants in these communities. The communities would apply for a certain number of immigrants, and new and recent arrivals would commit to several years of work on a path to citizenship. The details would come. What’s lacking is the national commitment and the mandate.
It’s often been said, with little disagreement, that immigrants built America. Why not let the millions trying to come here rebuild and revive it?

Bret Stephens argues that the recent $355 million decision against Donald Trump is ridiculous because his lenders did not complain and it will give credence to Mr. Trump’s claim that the justice system is rigged. I agree.
The other night I drove through a red light and, despite no one except a camera seeing the incident and no one complaining, I was ticketed.
I think I will use Mr. Stephens’s defense in court. It should pass the straight-face test.

You have had several articles about Donald Trump’s interference with the vote for the bipartisan border bill. This action and reaction by the Republican Party make Mr. Trump a de facto president. He makes his wishes known, and then Republicans do what he wants even though he is just a citizen who is not in office.
Democrats want the government to work the way it was intended, with bipartisan compromise to achieve what is achievable. We need discussion, debate and solutions. Even if solutions fail, we should then try something else, and try, try again.
Republicans want a king, I guess — someone who just tells them what to do, so they look at the former president and ask for guidance, instead of behaving as adults with free will.
I don’t understand why anyone would ever hand over their own ability to think to someone else. The effect is that Mr. Trump and the G.O.P. are behaving as though they are a shadow government. He is a pretender king.

The Anti-Abortion Endgame That Erin Hawley Admitted to the Supreme Court
Somewhat lost in the debate around abortion pills and oral arguments that took place at the Supreme Court in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine on Tuesday was one deeply uncomfortable truth: The very notion of what it means to practice emergency medicine is in dispute, with anti-abortion doctors insisting upon a right to refuse treatment for any patient who doesn’t meet their test of moral purity. Indeed, the right asserted is that in the absence of certainty about which patients are morally pure, the doctors want to deny medication to all patients, nationwide.
In public, the plaintiffs in this case—a group of doctors and dentists seeking to ban medication abortion—have long claimed they object to ending “unborn life” by finishing an “incomplete or failed” abortion at the hospital. But in court, they went much further. Their lawyer, Erin Hawley, admitted at oral argument that her clients don’t merely oppose terminating a pregnancy—they are pursuing the right to turn away a patient whose pregnancy has already been terminated . Indeed, they appear to want to deny even emergency care to patients whose fetus is no longer “alive,” on the grounds that the patient used an abortion drug earlier in the process. And they aim to deploy this broad fear of “complicity” against the FDA, to demand a nationwide prohibition on the abortion pill to ensure that they need never again see (and be forced to turn away) patients who’ve previously taken it. This is not a theory of being “complicit” in ending life. It is a theory that doctors can pick and choose their patients based on the “moral distress” they might feel in helping them.
It should come as no surprise that the same judge who tried to ban mifepristone in this case, Matthew Kacsmaryk, has also attempted to legalize anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in health care nationwide. This is the ballgame: weaponize subjective religious beliefs against secular society to degrade the quality of care for everyone. If you can’t persuade Americans to adopt hardcore evangelical views, exploit the legal system to coerce them into it anyway.
Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine is at once embarrassingly frivolous and existentially important. Don’t let the jokes about how silly the Comstock Act seems , or how speculative the theory of standing is, get in the way of taking a serious look at the claims on offer. The plaintiffs say they are terrified that one day, a patient may walk into their emergency room suffering complications from a medication abortion prescribed by some other doctor. This patient may need their assistance completing the abortion or simply recovering from the complete abortion, which these plaintiffs deem “complicity” in sin. And they say the solution is either a total, nationwide ban on mifepristone, the first drug in the medication abortion sequence, or a draconian (and medically unnecessary) set of restrictions that would place mifepristone out of reach for many patients. (The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5 th Circuit ruled to reinstate those restrictions at their behest.)
It is a twisted line of logic, one that should never have reached the Supreme Court in the first place. But it is also a product of the court’s past indulgence of outlandish claims about moral “complicity.” As was made plain in the oral arguments and briefing, activist doctors are no longer satisfied with personal conscience exemptions already granted under state and federal law; they now insist that nobody, anywhere, should have access to the abortion pill, in order to ensure that they themselves won’t have to treat patients who took one. At a minimum, they say, they should be able to radically roll back access to the pill in all 50 states to reduce the odds that one of these handful of objectors might someday encounter a patient who took it. This extremist argument lays bare the transformation of the idea of “complicity” from a shield for religious dissenters to a sword for ideologues desperate to seize control over other people’s lives and bodies.
At oral arguments, several justices pressed Hawley, who argued on behalf of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, with an obvious retort: Why can’t her clients simply refuse to treat these hypothetical someday patients on the grounds that they cannot help end the “life” of a fetus or embryo? After all, federal law guarantees doctors the right not to have to provide an abortion if doing so is “contrary to his religious beliefs or moral convictions.” Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh secured assurances from Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, early in the arguments, that under no circumstances could the government force any health care provider to ever participate in an abortion in violation of their conscience. Justice Elena Kagan asked Prelogar: “Suppose somebody has bled significantly, needs a transfusion, or, you know, any of a number of other things that might happen.” Would the plaintiffs object to treating them? Prelogar said the record was unclear.
Hawley, who is married to far-right Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, then approached the lectern and cleared up any confusion: Yes, she insisted, treating a patient who has undergone a medication abortion violates the conscience of the plaintiff physicians even if there is no “live” fetus or embryo to terminate anymore. “Completing an elective abortion means removing an embryo fetus, whether or not they’re alive, as well as placental tissue,” Hawley told Kagan. So the plaintiffs don’t object just to taking a “life.” They also object to the mere act of removing leftover tissue, even from the placenta.
Of course, these doctors must remove “dead” fetal tissue and placentas all the time—from patients who experienced a spontaneous miscarriage. By their own admission, the plaintiffs regularly help women complete miscarriages through surgery or medication. Those women they will gladly treat. Other women, though—the ones who induced their own miscarriage via medication—are too sinful to touch. Before the plaintiffs can administer even lifesaving emergency treatment, they need to know the circumstances of this pregnancy loss: Spontaneous miscarriages are OK; medication abortions are not.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, too, zeroed in on this admission. She told Hawley that she had thought the objection was to “participating in a procedure that is ending the life [of the fetus].” Hawley told her no: Any participation in an abortion, even through the indirect treatment of a patient without a “live” fetus, violated the doctors’ conscience. So, wait. What about “handing them a water bottle?” Jackson asked. Hawley dodged the question, declining to say whether helping a patient hydrate would constitute impermissible complicity in sin.
All this is reminiscent of Little Sisters of the Poor , a case about a Catholic charitable group that was afforded an exemption from the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. The Little Sisters were asked to check a box signaling to the government that they could not comply with the mandate, at which point the government would step in to cover their employees. But the Little Sisters refused, viewing this action—the checking of a box to opt out of coverage—as “complicity” in abortion because it would in turn trigger government payment for contraception (which they viewed as abortifacients). The Supreme Court and the Trump administration ultimately indulged the Little Sisters’ claim .
Here, we have emergency room physicians asserting that they will not participate in lifesaving medical intervention unless they approve of the reason for the pregnancy loss. Presumably, if the pregnant patient is an unwed mother, or a gay or transgender person, the doctor would be similarly complicit in sin and decline service. Seen through this lens, since one can never know which sins one is enabling in the ER, each and every day, a narrow conscience exemption becomes a sweeping guarantee that absolutely nobody in the country can ever have access to basic health care, let alone miscarriage management. (Of course, these plaintiffs might focus only on one set of “sins” they see as relevant.) In a country effectively governed by Kacsmaryk and his plaintiff friends, a gay person suffering a stroke could be turned away from any hospital because of his sexual orientation, all to spare a doctor from a glancing encounter with prior sin. As Tobias Barrington Wolff, a professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, put it to us in an email, this unbounded view of complicity “is part of enacting the social death of people and practices you abhor, which in turn can contribute to the material death of people and practices you abhor.”
One of the most exhausting lessons of post- Roe America is that being “pro-life” definitively means privileging the life of the presumptively sin-free unborn—or even their “dead” remains—over the life of the sin-racked adults who carry them. This is why women are left to go septic or to hemorrhage in hospital parking lots; it is why C-sections are performed in nonviable pregnancies, at high risk to mothers; it’s why the women who sued in Texas to secure exceptions to that state’s abortion ban are condemned by the state as sinners and whores . And it’s why—in the eyes of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine — it is a greater hardship for a physician to “waste precious moments scrubbing in, scrubbing out” of emergency surgery, as Hawley put it, so long as they don’t believe that the emergency warrants their professional services, than it is for a pregnant person, anywhere in the country, including in states that permit abortion, to be forced to give birth.
At oral argument, Hawley explained that her clients have “structured [their] medical practice to bring life into the world. When they are called from their labor and delivery floor down to the operating room to treat a woman suffering from abortion drug harm, that is diametrically opposed to why they entered the medical profession. It comes along with emotional harm.” The emotional harm alleged here is that unless these doctors approve of the specific circumstances of the ER visit, they violate not only their own medical preference but also their religious convictions. But they will never truly know enough about the sins of their patients to be able to shield themselves against being a link in a chain of subjective lifelong sin. And to be a doctor, especially an emergency physician, should be to understand that your patients’ private choices and spiritual life are not really open to your pervasive and vigilant medical veto. This deep-rooted suspicion of patients deemed insufficiently pure for lifesaving treatment didn’t begin with the availability of medication abortion. It will assuredly not end there.

Domestic workers perform grueling work with few protections. They provide care in isolated settings, leaving their essential labor all too often hidden. It can be a difficult job and a complicated one. When you work in a home, lines blur.
For decades, feminist activists have said that work in the home—often performed for no pay by wives, mothers, and daughters—has been misunderstood as separate from “real” labor. This feminized care has been relegated and detached from a labor movement focused on men.
In the United States, such work has also been done by Black women who have had to organize aggressively against the odds. Infamously, domestic workers were excluded from the labor agenda during the New Deal. And, since then, they have had to fight to catch up to standards enshrined for others in the law. The National Domestic Workers Alliance and others have sought to change the state of play. After the pandemic , there has also been an uptick in interest in movements like Wages for Housework —a campaign in the 1970s to organize and recognize work in the home.
In this project, Chloe Aftel highlights the day-to-day demands of these workers who often go unnoticed. She follows Vivian Siordia and Liezl Japona, both care workers in California, showing the daily ups and downs of such labor. Both Siordia and Japona think that more organizing and aid to care workers could help make the job better.

There’s No Such Thing as an American Bible

The presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States, who weeks ago started selling shoes , is now peddling Bibles. During Holy Week.
What’s special about this Bible? So many things. For example, according to a promotional website, it’s the only Bible endorsed by Donald Trump. It’s also the only one endorsed by the country singer Lee Greenwood. Admittedly, the translation isn’t distinctive — it’s your standard King James Version — but the features are unique. This Bible includes the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and part of the lyrics of Mr. Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA.” Perhaps most striking, the cover of the Bible does not include a cross or any symbol of the Christian tradition; instead, it is emblazoned with the American flag.
While part of me wants to laugh at the absurdity of it — and marvel at the sheer audacity — I find the messaging unsettling and deeply wrong. This God Bless the USA Bible, as it’s officially named, focuses on God’s blessing of one particular people. That is both its danger and, no doubt for some, its appeal.
Whether this Bible is an example of Christian nationalism I will leave to others. It is at least an example of Christian syncretism, a linking of certain myths about American exceptionalism and the Christian faith. This is the American church’s consistent folly: thinking that we are the protagonists in a story that began long before us and whose main character is in fact the Almighty.
Holy Week is the most sacred portion of the Christian calendar, a time when the church recounts the central events of our faith’s narrative, climaxing in the death and resurrection of Jesus. That story, unlike the parochial God Bless the USA Bible, does not belong to any culture.
Holy Week is celebrated on every continent and in too many languages to number. Some of the immigrants Mr. Trump declared were “ poisoning the blood” of America will probably shout “Christ is risen!” this Easter. Many of them come from the largely Christian regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. They may have entered the country with Bibles in their native tongues nestled securely among their other belongings.
One of the beauties of the Christian faith is that it leaps over the lines dividing countries, leading the faithful to call fellow believers from very different cultures brothers and sisters. Most of the members of this international community consist of the poor living in Africa, Asia and Latin America. There are more Spanish-speaking Christians than English- speaking ones .
If there are central messages that emerge from the variety of services that take place during Holy Week, for many Christians they are the setting aside of power to serve, the supremacy of love, the offer of divine forgiveness and the vulnerability of a crucified God.
This is not the stuff of moneymaking schemes or American presidential campaigns.
It was Pontius Pilate , standing in as the representative of the Roman Empire, who sentenced Jesus to death. The Easter story reminds believers that empires are more than willing to sacrifice the innocent if it allows rulers to stay in power. The church sees Christ’s resurrection as liberating the believer from the power of sin. The story challenges imperial modes of thinking, supplanting the endless pursuit of power with the primacy of love and service.
Easter, using the language of St. Augustine, represents the victory of the City of God over the City of Man. It declares the limits of the moral reasoning of nation-states and has fortified Christians who’ve resisted evil regimes such as fascists in South America, Nazis in Germany, apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the United States.
For any politician to suppose that a nation’s founding documents and a country music song can stand side by side with biblical texts fails at a theological and a moral level. I can’t imagine people in other countries going for anything like it. It is hard to picture a modern “God Bless England” Bible with elements of British common law appended to Christianity’s most sacred texts.
I am glad for the freedoms that we share as Americans. But the idea of a Bible explicitly made for one nation displays a misunderstanding of the story the Bible attempts to tell. The Christian narrative culminates in the creation of the Kingdom (and family) of God, a transnational community united by faith and mutual love.
Roman Catholics , Anglicans and Orthodox Christians, who together claim around 1.5 billion members, describe the Bible as a final authority in matters of faith. Evangelicals, who have overwhelmingly supported Mr. Trump over the course of three election cycles, are known for their focus on Scripture, too. None of these traditions cite or refer to any American political documents in their doctrinal statements — and for good reason.
This Bible may be unique in its form, but the agenda it pursues has recurred throughout history. Christianity is often either co-opted or suppressed; it is rarely given the space to be itself. African American Christians have long struggled to disentangle biblical texts from their misuse in the United States. There is a reason that the abolitionist Frederick Douglass said that between the Christianity of this land (America) and the Christianity of Christ, he recognized the “widest possible difference.”
And while Christianity was used to give theological cover to North American race-based chattel slavery, it was violently attacked in places like El Salvador and Uganda, when leaders including the archbishops Oscar Romero and Janani Luwum spoke out against political corruption.
The work of the church is to remain constantly vigilant to maintain its independence and the credibility of its witness. In the case of this particular Bible, discerning what is happening is not difficult. Christians are being played. Rather than being an appropriate time to debut a patriotic Bible, Easter season is an opportune moment for the church to recover the testimony of the supremacy of the cross over any flag, especially one on the cover of a Bible.

മനുഷ്യനെ മറ്റെല്ലാ ജീവികളിൽനിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തനാക്കുന്നത് ചിന്താ ശേഷിയും വിവേകബുദ്ധിയുമാണ്. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ഈ കഴിവുകളെ കൂടുതൽ പുഷ്ടിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ഭാരതത്തിൽ ഇപ്പോഴും ബഹുഭൂരി പക്ഷം ജനങ്ങളും അക്ഷരാഭ്യാസമില്ലാത്തവരാണ്. ലോകജനസംഖ്യ യിലും ഇവരുടെ എണ്ണം കൂടുതലാണ്. അറിവില്ലായ്മ അന്ധവിശ്വാസ ങ്ങളും അനാചാരങ്ങളും വളർത്തുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് എല്ലാ രാജ്യങ്ങളും -ഐക്യ രാഷ്ട്രസംഘടനപോലും-നിരക്ഷരതാനിർമ്മാർജ്ജനത്തി നുള്ള യത്നത്തിലാണ്.
ഇന്ത്യയെപ്പോലൊരു രാജ്യത്ത് നിരക്ഷരത ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ വലുതാണ്. ജനാധിപത്യരാജ്യമാണ് ഭാരതം. ആധുനിക ജനാധിപത്യ സംവിധാനം സാക്ഷരതയുടെയും ചിന്താശേഷിയുടെയും അടിസ്ഥാ നത്തിലാണ് പുലരുന്നത്. കാര്യങ്ങൾ പഠിക്കാനും മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും വായിച്ചറിയാനും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം വേണം. എഴുത്തും വായനയും നമ്മുടെ അറിവിന്റെ ലോകം വലുതാക്കുന്നു. ജനാധിപത്യത്തിന്റെ നിലനില്പ്പു തന്നെ ശരിയായ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിലും വിലയിരുത്തലിലുമാണ് കുടി കൊള്ളുന്നത്. നല്ല ജനപ്രതിനിധികളെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കണമെങ്കിൽ ജനങ്ങൾ വിദ്യാസമ്പന്നരായിരിക്കണം. ജനാധിപത്യമൂല്യങ്ങളും മികച്ച ദർശനവും രാഷ്ട്രീയ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുമുള്ളവരായിരിക്കണം ജനപ്രതിനി ധികളായി വരേണ്ടത്.
രാഷ്ട്രനിർമ്മാണ പ്രക്രിയയിൽ പങ്കാളികളായ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് വിദ്യാ ഭ്യാസം കരുത്തു പകരുന്നു. പൗരബോധവും കടമയും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം വഴിസിദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. രാജ്യത്തിന്റെയും സമൂഹത്തിന്റെയും വിക സനത്തിന് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം കൂടിയേ തീരൂ. ചൂഷണത്തിനെതിരെ ശബ്ദി ക്കാനും പോരാടാനും ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ശക്തി നൽകുന്നു. അറിവിന്റെ പരിധിയില്ലാത്ത ലോകത്തേക്കാണ് വായന അവരെ നയിക്കുന്നത്. ലോകത്തിന്റെ നാനാ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ സംഭവിക്കുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാ ക്കാൻ വായന സഹായിക്കുന്നു. ഈ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ യുക്തിസഹമാണോ എന്നും ഉപകാരപ്രദമാണോ എന്നും വിലയിരുത്തുവാൻ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം അവരെ പ്രാപ്തരാക്കുന്നു. അതുവഴി പുതിയ ചിന്തയും ദർശനവും അവരിൽ രൂപംകൊള്ളുന്നു. അത് ജനാധിപത്യത്തിന്റെ കാര്യശേഷി വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുകയും പുതിയ പുതിയ സാമ്പത്തികപരിഷ്കാരത്തെപ്പറ്റി ബോധവാന്മാരാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
സമൂഹത്തിലെ വിവിധ മേഖലകളിൽ നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് അവരുടെ പ്രവർത്തനമണ്ഡലങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയും പുത്തൻ സാധ്യതകളെപ്പ റ്റിയും പഠിക്കാൻ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം അവസരം ഒരുക്കുന്നു. കർഷകർ പുതിയ കാർഷികരീതികളെപ്പറ്റി പഠിക്കുന്നു. വ്യവസായികൾ പുതിയ വ്യവസായതന്ത്രങ്ങൾ പഠിക്കുന്നു. ശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ യിലും അടിക്കടിയുണ്ടാകുന്ന നൂതന പ്രവണതകൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. ഒരു രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ സാമ്പത്തികാഭിവൃദ്ധിക്ക് ഇതൊക്കെ കാരണമാ കുന്നു. സാമൂഹ്യപരിഷ്കരണവും നീതിയും സമത്വവും സ്ത്രീപുരു ഷസമത്വവുമൊക്കെ സാധ്യമാകണമെങ്കിൽ വിദ്യാസമ്പന്നരായ ജന ങ്ങൾ രാജ്യത്തുണ്ടാകണം.
സാമൂഹ്യതിന്മകളെ ഉച്ചാടനം ചെയ്യാൻ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനു സാധി ക്കും. സങ്കുചിതമായ പല ചിന്താഗതികൾക്കും വിലങ്ങിടാൻ ഇതു കൊണ്ട് സാധിക്കൂ. മതസഹിഷ്ണുതയും വിശാലമനസ്കതയും അറിവിലൂടെ സാധ്യമാകുന്നു. ഈ വഴിക്കു ചിന്തിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രത്തിന്റെ സർവ്വതോന്മുഖമായ പുരോഗതിക്കും സമാധാന ത്തിനും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ടതാണ്. എല്ലാവർക്കും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമെന്ന ലക്ഷ്യം നേടുക എന്നതായിരിക്കണം ഒരു ജനാധിപത്യ സർക്കാറിന്റെ പ്രഥമ പരിഗണന.
