What is a transfer certificate

Transfer certificate | 6 things you need to know with samples!

Planning to leave your current school or university and join a new one in that case, you will definitely need a transfer certificate. if you want to write it in a crisp and clear fashion, read this blog and understand what it is, what it should include, and what it should look like, table of contents, introduction, what is a transfer certificate (tc), why is a transfer certificate needed, application, things to include in your application, what to do after getting the transfer certificate, key takeaways.

Shifting from one school or college to another is a part of almost every student’s academic journey. One of the biggest challenges students face during this transition is to gather all the required documentation before transferring. A transfer certificate, or TC, is one of the most important documents you will need to switch to a new school or college.

So to help you get a TC easily, we have shared everything you need to know about it in this blog. But wait! Before we tell you how to file your application for a transfer certificate, let us find out what it is and why it’s important.

A TC is a document issued by the person in charge of an institution for a student who’s leaving that institute. It consists of the student’s personal details, such as parents’ names, academic records, program studied at the institution, date of birth as per the institution’s records, fee details, and occupational records.

A TC also mentions whether the student in question has cleared all the fees or if they still have any dues left. It also specifies if they have cleared all the exams and essentially serves as a conduct certificate.

Essentially, a TC is a proof that a student has left his/her previous institution. This is to ensure that they are enrolled in only one school or college at a time. It also assures the concerned authorities at the next institution that the student has cleared all the dues and exams at his/her previous institution. Its purpose is to release a student from his/her current school or college so that he/she can join another.

If you have been admitted to a new school or college, then you need to apply for a transfer certificate at your old school in writing. The purpose of this is to formally notify the authorities of your decision to leave and request them to provide you with a TC.

You can do so by promptly informing your new school or college about your successful transfer. Provide them with a copy of your TC and any other required documents to complete the admission process smoothly.

Familiarize yourself with the requirements and deadlines set by your new school or college. Submit all necessary forms, fees, and documentation within the specified timeframe to secure your admission.

Your transfer certificate serves as proof of your academic achievements and progress. However, it’s also important to transfer your complete academic records, including transcripts, report cards, and other relevant documents, to your new institution. This will help ensure proper placement in classes and assist your new teachers in understanding your educational background.

Transferring to a new school or college offers a unique opportunity for personal and academic growth. Embrace the change, be open to new experiences, and seize the chance to broaden your horizons and expand your knowledge.

  • A TC is proof that the student has left the institution.
  • Whenever you decide to switch your school or college, you must apply for a TC to move on to a new institution.
  • In your TC, talk about the reasons for applying, request for the certificate, and mention the date for issuing.
  • Keep the tips mentioned above in mind while drafting your application to obtain your TC in a hassle-free manner!

Everything you need to know about a Transfer Certificate Application (TC).

What is a transfer certificate.

A Transfer Certificate is one that is substantially in the format specified in Schedule 4 (Form of Transfer Certificate) or in another form agreed upon by the Negotiator and Supplicant. A student who dropped out and received a Transfer Certificate (TC) from the college is not eligible for readmission.

A moving certificate is a form that the institution’s in-charge prepares and sends to a student upon his request. When a student decides to leave an institution, college, or school, the appropriate authorities will issue a transfer certificate.

What all information does a Transfer Certificate hold?

The certificate of moving contains the student’s personal information and includes the student’s date of birth as recorded by the college, when and which module the student enrolled in, whether he/she passed or failed, and it also verifies that the student paid all of his dues to the institution and is not a defaulter. This includes the mother’s and father’s names, as well as the family’s occupation, according to the documents.

A Transfer Certificate is a document issued to a student at the request of the organization’s competent authorities. If a student is forced to leave an institution, college, or school, a certificate is issued that includes the student’s individual points of interest and describes the student’s conformance to the record of that finding, the student’s date of birth, when and which course the student learned at the start, the last class graduated or failed, and that the student pays all of his tuition to the school and is not a defaulter.

Importance of a Transfer Certificate .

  • A Moving Document is required when a student leaves his or her school or institute after passing their examination.
  • Whenever a student leaves school while studying, after finishing studies, or after receiving the highest school grade. He must then obtain a transfer certificate (TC) from his current school in order to be admitted to another educational institution.
  • If you want to study at a university in another country, you must provide your TC.
  • Even if the student plans to pursue a master’s degree at the same university, a TC is required.

The role and purpose of a Transfer certificate .

The school or college authority issues this legal document to confirm that the student was a genuine scholar of their institution, that he/she owes NO DUES to the institute, and that it also serves as the Student’s Conduct Certificate.

Although this certification is provided in its original form by the school or college to which the student is applying, it frequently serves as a binding document and proof that the student is only applying to ONE college or institution, rather than multiple schools and colleges of the same name.

The purpose of the Transfer paper is to ensure that a student only enrols in one regular course or college at a time. This prevents entry into specific entities and must be created in Original to cancel subsequent TC.

When is Transfer Certificate be issued?

If the TC is not requested, many people will flee without paying their debts. The students’ character and actions may also be certified by TC in the school textbook. If a student is ejected from school as a punishment, this should be documented in TC.

It is a statute that permits the transfer of jurisdiction and proof of no debt owed to the former school, which is usually the most recent university or board attended. Many organisations charge a nominal fee for this service, which is usually signed by the governing body’s registrar.

What should a Transfer Certificate contain?

The application’s goal is to transfer the student from his or her current school to another. When writing a transfer certificate, keep the following points in mind:

  • Reason: Students must have a valid and genuine reason for requiring a leaving document when applying.
  • TC Request: Submit an application for the credential to the school administrator or class teacher, explaining why the TC is critical.
  • Documents added for admission to other institutes: Include any documentation required for admission to another school/institute.
  • Keep the following dates in mind for the issuance of certificates: Students may also suggest a specific day or an earlier date to avoid complications.

As you can see, a Transfer Certificate is critical for students who want to transfer from their current institution to another. In today’s era of online education, the institutions that offer a TC aka Transfer Certificate are few and far between. However, Edzym provides your children with the necessary Transfer Certificate, which will be useful in the future if your children wish to transfer to another institution.

A school Transfer Certificate, also known as a Leaving Certificate, is a formal request to the school by an applicant to transfer from one institution to another. For a variety of reasons, students often request a school leaving certificate. One simple explanation is that they want to continue their education at another school after finishing class 10th or class 12th. A student’s family is frequently relocated for work and wishes to accompany them, which is another reason to obtain TC from college and education.

The school’s application for TC consists of a letter from the principal requesting the issuance of a TC. The student may be unable to enrol in another school, college, or institute until this paper is completed. Similarly, college students may obtain their TC application forms for college and school from the dean or director of the college in order to gain admission to another institution.

An Application for Transfer Certificate is written by parents or students to the principal of a school or college with a request to issue the transfer certificate.

A transfer certificate (TC) is a certificate that is issued to students by a school, college, or university for the purpose of getting admission to another school or institute.

The chief reason for a transfer certificate is to release the student from their current school or college to another institute to continue their education. The transfer certificate is often required for admission after 5,6,8,10,12, or after graduation.

Table of Contents

1. Why TC ( Transfer Certificate ) Is Important For Students?

The transfer certificate is quite important for students. It enables a student to continue their education. Students who wish to change their school, college, university, or board are required to submit a transfer certificate letter from their previous institute.

It is an essential admission document. Students cannot continue their education at the next school unless they have a transfer certificate letter.

2. Which Reasons Does A Student Requires a School Transfer Certificate?

There are various reasons why students require a transfer certificate. In many cases, TC is required by students when their parents (father and mother) are transferred to another city. They need a transfer certificate for their children because of their migration to another place.

In other cases, TC is required after completion of education at one school and before getting admission to another school. However, in most cases, the TC is required after the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th class. And, at the college level, after completing FSC, 12th, a transfer certificate is required from the college principal.

The TC application letter is, therefore, written either by students or parents to their local schools. The recommended practice is to write a letter for a transfer application in English, Hindi, or Urdu. However, the letter requesting TC can also be written in languages such as Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, or Telugu.

For every language, official, national, or local, the format of the TC application remains the same. No need to worry at all. We have tried to write transfer certificate application samples in English, Hindi, or Urdu in a simple and easy format. You can view it, understand it, read or download PDFs online, or even share it with your friends.

When a student leaves a school to get admission to another school, for any reason, you need to produce a transfer certificate letter.

In other words, it is also called a school leaving certificate. This letter certifies your level of education and its status of continuance or completion.

Since your words represent your personality and level of education, always take special care while writing a TC application.

The careless or too common use of words creates a bad impression. Always come up with your own words with genuine reason in simple, easy, attractive, and graceful words.

3. Two Most Common Reasons Applying for TC Certificate From School

Most often, after passing classes 5,6,7,8,9, or 10 at one school, the students need a school leaving certificate to get admission at another college or institute.

At the college level, after completing the 12th or FSC, students need a school leaving certificate to get admission to the university. Therefore, a transfer certificate letter is required by students after completing metric, FSC, or graduation.

2. Secondly, school leaving is required in conditions when one family is migrating from one place to another for various reasons, including job, business, etc. Many students require a transfer certificate because of the job transfer of their parents from one city to another.

FAQ On TC Letter

Q: 01. what is tc in school.

Answer: TC stands for Transfer Certificate. It is issued by the school to the students when they have completed their education with that school and wish to move to another school or college for further study. The transfer certificate is a letter that certifies the level of education completed by a certain student in one school. Normally, it is requested by students after completing their primary, secondary or college education at one school or college.

Q: 02. How can I write TC application?

Answer: Writing the transfer certificate application is simple and easy by following some rules. The normal rules for writing an effective TC application

include; 1. Addressing the Principal or Head of the department with Kind and Formal words. 2. Write out your subject of application clearly. 3. Briefly introduce yourself in the first paragraph. 4. Write clearly the reason for your request of TC 5. Close the application with positive note and sincere wishes.

Q: 03. How can I get duplicate TC from college?

Answer: In case you have lost your original TC, you can request a duplicate by writing an application to your Principal. But before, writing application make sure you have followed the due course, ie lodging an FIR or Police report for your loss of original TC. After that, write to your Principal. State clearly your reason for requesting duplicate TC. Don’t forget to enclose the FIR or Police report Copy along with your application for requesting another TC.

Q: 04. Is transfer certificate and migration certificate same?

Answer: There is little difference between a transfer certificate and migration certificate. The transfer certificate is issued by a school or college when

one student completes his education at one school and wishes to get admission into another school. The migration certificate, on the other hand, is required when one student changes his board or university.

Therefore, if you are shifting from one school to another under the same board you need a transfer certificate but if you go and get admission into the school or college or another board, you need a migration certificate.

Q: 05. Can I take admission without TC?

Answer : You  can’t take admission without TC. However, in some conditions, you might be allowed to get admission and submit the TC later.

For that, you need to write an application to the Principal for allowing you to get admission with the condition that you would submit your Transfer certificate afterwards.

Q: 06. Is migration certificate compulsory?

Answer: Both, the migration certificate and TC are important documents. You can’t get admission without them. Since they certify your level of education at some school, you need them to get admission further.

What is a TC?

A transfer certificate or TC is essential for students who wish to move from one school to another. The new School requires proof that the student has attended the previous School and cleared all dues. Applying for a transfer certificate can be a daunting task for many. In this blog, I'll discuss applying for a transfer certificate in a step-by-step guide, along with some tips and benefits of applying for a TC.

What is an Application for TC?

A Transfer Certificate, also known as a School Leaving Certificate, is an official document issued by a school to a student transferring to another school. The document contains important information about the student's educational records, including their academic history and any achievements or awards earned at the School.

An Application for Transfer Certificate is a formal request made by a student or their parent/guardian to the School, asking for the issuance of this document.

It is usually a single-page document containing basic information about the student, such as name, Date of birth, address, phone number, and other details. The application also contains a statement from the student that they have cleared all the school dues and are ready to leave.

It is important to note that an application for TC is not the same as a transfer application. A transfer application is a document used to apply for admission to a new school. An application for TC is only used to get a transfer certificate from the current school.

To apply for leave from school, you will typically need to submit a written request to your principal or other school administrator.

This request should include the dates of the leave, the reason for the leave, and any other relevant information, such as whether you will be able to complete your assignments while you are away. In some cases, you may also need to provide documentation, such as a doctor's note, to support your request for leave.

It is generally a good idea to apply for leave as far in advance as possible, to allow the school time to make any necessary arrangements. The specific timing will depend on the policies of your school and the reason for the leave. For example, if you are requesting leave due to a medical emergency, you may need to apply on shorter notice.

The decision to approve or deny a request for leave is ultimately up to the school administration.

Factors that may be considered include the length of the leave, the reason for the leave, and the potential impact on the student's academic progress.

In some cases, the school may require the student to make up missed work or may have other requirements in order to grant the leave.

If your request for leave is denied, you may have the option to appeal the decision. The process for appealing a decision will vary depending on the policies of your school and the reason for the denial. It may be helpful to speak with a school administrator or guidance counselor to discuss your options.

It is generally acceptable to request leave for the purpose of traveling or vacationing, as long as the request is made in advance and the dates of the leave do not conflict with important school events or exams. However, the school may have specific policies in place regarding the timing and length of such leaves, and may require the student to make up missed work upon their return.

Taking a leave of absence may affect your academic standing or eligibility for extracurricular activities, depending on the length of the leave and the school's policies. It is important to discuss any potential impacts with the school administration before making a request for leave, and to follow any specific requirements for making up missed work or staying current with coursework.

In some cases, the school may require documentation to support a request for leave.

This could include a doctor's note if the leave is due to illness, or other documentation such as a letter from an employer or a court order if the leave is related to a personal or family emergency.

It is important to provide any requested documentation in a timely manner, as this can help to support your request and ensure that it is processed smoothly.

In some cases, it may be possible to request a leave of absence for the purpose of taking online classes or pursuing other educational opportunities.

The school may have specific policies in place regarding the timing and length of such leaves, and may require the student to make up missed work or meet other requirements upon their return.

It is important to discuss the request with the school administration in advance, and to provide any necessary documentation to support the request.

If you need to extend your leave of absence after it has already been approved, it is important to communicate the situation to the school as soon as possible.

The school may be able to grant an extension, but may also have specific requirements in place for making up missed work or staying current with coursework.

It is important to follow any specific procedures for requesting an extension and to provide any necessary documentation to support the request.

Subject: Request for TC because of transfer

Respected Madam,

I’m Hetal Patel, the mother of Raksha Patel, who is in the 8th grade, section B. I’d like to inform you that we are moving our home from its current location to a completely different side of town. It will be extremely difficult for us to transport Raksha to school from such a long distance. It will take about 3-4 hours to get from home to school. It will be a burden for the child, and if she is late, she will be breaking the rules.

As a result, we decided to change Raksha’s school and transfer her to a nearby school from our current location.

As a result, I request that you issue her TC as soon as possible so that we can begin her admission procedure.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours

Hetal Patel

I’d like to inform you that Nachiket has achieved a high percentage in all subjects in his board exams for standard 10th. According to his teachers and peers, he was an excellent student. Since Vidya Niketan only offers Science and Commerce Streams and does not have the stream of study he intends to pursue (Humanities), he needs to transfer to a school that offers it. It is a mutual decision between us and him; he is not under any pressure to make this decision.

Therefore, I humbly request that you issue his transfer certificate so that we can apply to other schools and plan for his future studies. I’d appreciate it if you could send it to me as soon as possible.

Hi…. how can I get the TC if I want to change the state after my 9th because my father is no more and i have to shift to another state

If you have registered for 10th board exam then your chances of getting TC are very less as 9th and 10th have to be done at the same school.

Additional exceptions to the above list must be approved by the Director of Recruitment, Admissions, and Orientation, or designee.

Provide satisfactory placement test scores or transcripts showing math and English college coursework.

  • Placement scores are valid for three years. To satisfy admission requirements, scores in writing, reading, and math must be valid on the first day of the admitted term.
  • Students not eligible for admission, as a result of earning below the minimum reading score as defined by the College’s Placement Criteria Chart, may be referred to Adult Basic Education or other literacy programs as appropriate.

Open Admissions

Tri-County Technical College operates as an open admissions college as required by the 1976 Code of Laws of South Carolina, as amended. As such, Tri-County Technical College makes every effort to minimize geographic, financial, and scholastic barriers to the post-secondary programs and services offered by the College. A high school diploma or high school equivalent credential (e.g. GED), though desirable, is not a prerequisite for admission to the College, but is required for admission to diploma and degree programs.

In order to promote achievement by individuals with varied potential, open admissions is defined as a practice which (1) admits to the College all citizens who can benefit from available learning opportunities, and (2) places into specific programs of study those students whose potential for success is commensurate with program admission standards.

Minimum Age for Admission

Applicants to the College must be seventeen years of age to be admitted. Applicants younger than seventeen years of age who do not have a high school diploma or approved equivalency and who are not seeking Dual Enrollment are required to meet with the Director of Recruitment, Admissions, and Orientation, or designee, for an assessment interview to determine readiness for admission. Regardless of age, all students must meet program-specific admissions criteria and requirements.

Exceptions to the standard admissions requirements may be granted by the Director of Recruitment, Admissions, and Orientation, or designee.

Types of Students

Dual Enrollment

Applicants who will take college courses while also enrolled in high school courses may be admitted as dual enrollment students. Dual enrollment applicants are admitted into the appropriate certificate program (University Studies or an approved career pathway certificate) once the application for admission is submitted and the permission form is obtained with appropriate signatures from the parent or guardian and the high school principal. Home schooled students must provide permission from the parent or guardian and from the school district or an authorized educational agency with jurisdiction over the home school. No application fee is required. High school students who are not juniors or seniors must receive permission to enroll from the Director of High School Engagement and Outreach, or designee.

Applicants enrolled at another college desiring to transfer one or more Tri-County courses to their home college may be admitted as transient students. Applicants must submit an application for admission, application fee, and the Transient Coursework Approval form prior to registration. Satisfaction of course prerequisites must be verified by submitting official/unofficial transcripts.

Applicants not seeking admission into a degree, diploma, or certificate program may be admitted as non-degree students. Applicants must complete an application for admission, submit the application fee (or be identified as an allowable exception detailed in General Admissions Requirements), and take the College’s placement test. Submission of high school transcript or high school equivalency transcript is not required. Additional exceptions may be granted on a case by case basis by the Director of Recruitment, Admissions, and Orientation, or designee. All course prerequisites must be satisfied.

International

International applicants are non-citizens or non-permanent residents of the United States who hold visas that are eligible for post-secondary studies or who have documented and verified lawful presence in the country. Tri-County does not issue Form I-20s for F-1 Student visas. The College does allow international students who hold valid F-1 Student visas issued from other institutions to apply as transient students. Eligible international applicants must meet all admission requirements including submitting official transcripts to a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member to have their transcripts evaluated. Students must maintain visa status and immigration documents in the manner required by the Department of Homeland Security. Any international student who does not maintain the appropriate status will be withdrawn from the College.

Other Learning Experiences

Bridge programs, dual enrollment and career pathways for success.

Tri-County’s dual enrollment and career pathways programs provide opportunities for qualified high school juniors and seniors, with permission from their parents or guardians and high school officials, to take Tri-County courses. Opportunities include university transfer courses as well as technical courses offered through career pathways that seamlessly connect secondary and post-secondary curricula in a specialized career field. Students must submit the online Dual Enrollment Application for Admission and a Dual Enrollment Permission Form with the appropriate signatures in order to be admitted to the College. For additional information, contact 864-646-1505 or 864-646-1501.

I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) is a nationally recognized workforce development program that has been adapted by Tri-County for residents of Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties. The tuition-free program has been created through partnerships between the College, School Districts, Adult Education Centers, and employers throughout the tri-county area. It features individualized educational and career planning, industry recognized certifications, job placement assistance and much more. Additional details can be found in the Academic & Career Foundations section of this Catalog.

Placement Testing

The purpose of placement testing is to make sure students have the necessary skills in reading, writing, and math to be successful in achieving their educational goals. Even though the placement test is a computer-based test, very little computer skills are necessary to complete the test. The placement test is not a pass/fail test.

Students who are unsure if they need to take the placement test should contact Admissions to determine if placement testing is required.

  • SAT, ACT, or other standardized test scores cannot be substituted for the placement test.
  • The placement test is given at all campuses.
  • Placement scores are valid for three years. To satisfy admission requirements, scores in writing, reading, and math must be valid on the first day of the admitted term.
  • Transcripts indicating proof of college credit level English and Math courses (not developmental or transitional courses) will be considered only with grades of “C” or higher.
  • A picture ID is required for placement testing. Acceptable forms of identification include a state-issued picture ID (a driver’s license, for example), a military ID, or a valid school ID (high school or college).
  • To access practice test questions and download study materials visit www.tctc.edu/placement.
  • There is no charge for initial placement testing. If a retest is needed or requested during a three-year period, one may be taken at a cost of $10. An academic advisor or the Assessment Center can help determine if retesting is needed. Other fees are applicable to complete placement testing for another institution or to have prior test scores sent to another institution.
  • Alternative placement testing with accommodations is available as approved by the College’s Accessibility Resource Center located in the Student Success Center on the Pendleton Campus. Contact ARC at 864-646-1564.

For more information about placement testing, call 864-646-1300 or visit www.tctc.edu/placement .

The College requires orientation sessions for all new, transfer, and returning students prior to the start of each semester. Orientation introduces students to the College experience, informs them about resources and services they will use as Tri-County students, and facilitates their transition into their chosen academic programs.  Orientation registration instructions are provided to students in their admission materials. The orientation sessions are held on a variety of dates at all campuses, and are offered in individual and group formats. As part of orientation, students meet with advisors for course planning and course registration. For more information, contact the Office of Recruitment, Admissions, and Orientation at 864-646-1550 or [email protected].

F-1 Practical Training

Curricular practical training (cpt).

  • Optional Practical Training (OPT)
  • STEM OPT Extension

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is employment used to satisfy the requirements of a required or elective  internship , practicum, or fieldwork course.  In all cases, the employment must   form an integral part of the established curriculum of your program. Note that if the course is required, it may be a credit or non-credit course, depending on your program's academic requirements and procedures. If the course is an elective, it must be taken for a minimum of 1 credit.

Curricular Practical Training can only be authorized part-time (up to 20/per week) while school is in session and full-time during regularly scheduled vacations. Exceptions may apply depending on the structure of your program. If you engage in one year or more of  full-time  Curricular Practical Training, you will not be eligible for Optional Practical Training.  You may not begin your employment until the authorized date on the Form I-20. You must end the employment on the authorization end date indicated on the Form -20. Please note that we cannot authorize CPT retroactively.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

In order to be eligible for CPT, you must:

  • Have a job offer directly related to your academic program
  • Have been lawfully enrolled full-time for one academic year
  • Be in lawful F-1 status
  • Making normal progress toward degree completion and be in good academic standing

  HOW TO APPLY

STEP 1: Attend an F-1 Employment Workshop

STEP 2: Obtain an offer of employment

STEP 3: Obtain a  Degree Audit

STEP 4: Submit the Request for Curricular Practical Training eForm via  TC-Compass

Once the OISS receives your application, it will be reviewed by an international student advisor within 14 business days. You will then receive an email communication notifying you that the I-20 is ready for pick up or to be mailed. You will then present your I-20 to your employer.

In order to submit your request successfully, you will need to:

  • provide the name and email address of your academic advisor or department contact.
  • provide the name, address, and dates of employment for your proposed CPT employer.

You will also be asked to upload a scanned copy of your:

  • Degree Audit
  • Offer of employment

ATTENTION: prior to e-filing your OPT application via USCIS' website, please ensure you receive an updated Form I-20 with OPT recommendation from OISS

F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an employment benefit that allows you, as an F-1 student, to gain practical, professional experience in your field of study.  Unlike Curricular Practical Training (CPT), OPT does not require you to register for an internship, practicum, or fieldwork course. Moreover, you may use OPT either before or after completion of studies, on a part-time or full-time basis.

Eligibility Requirements for OPT

  • You must be in valid F-1 status, with an unexpired I-20, electronic I-94 or I-94 card marked "F-1 D/S"
  • You must have completed at least one academic year of full-time study by the time your OPT period starts
  • You do not need to have a job offer to apply for OPT; however, you must have the intention of pursuing professional employment in your field of study. Under OPT, you may not accept employment that does not constitute relevant professional training
  • You must be physically present in the U.S. at the time you submit your application
  • You must be in good academic standing and making normal progress towards completion of your degree
  • You must not have been approved for 12 months of OPT in the past at the current degree level
  • If you have completed your program, the USCIS must receive your application within 60 days of completion and you must not have left the U.S. during those 60 days. If you leave the U.S. within your 60-day grace period prior to submitting the application for OPT, you are no longer eligible to apply

How Long Does OPT Last

OPT is limited to a total of 12 months per degree level. Any OPT granted prior to completion of studies, or for a previously-completed degree at the same degree level, will be deducted from that total. For example, if you did 3 months of full-time, pre-completion OPT you will have 9 months available for post-completion OPT. Or, if you did 12 months of OPT after completing a master of arts degree, you will not have any OPT eligibility left if (after completing your OPT) you immediately enter another master of arts degree program.

Part-time OPT (up to 20 hours per week) is deducted from the available OPT at one-half the full-time rate. For example, 6 months of part-time OPT is counted as equivalent to 3 months of full-time OPT.      You may become eligible for another 12 months of OPT if you move to a higher degree level. For example, if you used 12 months of OPT following completion of your master's degree, you will be able to establish eligibility for another 12 months if you enter a doctoral program.       STEM Extension of OPT :  Some F-1 graduates at Teachers College will be eligible for an additional 24 months of OPT (for a total of 36 months).  The STEM extension is only possible for students who obtain degrees in DHS approved STEM fields ; broadly defined as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and whose employers are registered in a U.S. government program call E-Verify. If you would like to know if your degree qualifies as a STEM eligible degree, you will find the CIP Code for your degree on Page 1 of the current version I-20 or at the top of Page 3 of the previous version I-20.

When Can I Use My OPT

You use your OPT:

Prior to completion of your program (Pre-completion OPT)

After completion of your program (Post-completion OPT).

When Should I Apply for OPT

Pre-Completion OPT : You can submit an application for Pre-completion OPT at any point during your studies, provided that you have been lawfully enrolled full-time for at least one academic year. As a rule, it is best to apply for OPT at least 3-4 months before you want to start working. We do not recommend applying for pre-completion OPT unless you have an offer of employment. Any time authorized for pre-completion OPT is deducted from your 12 months eligibility even if you do not find employment.

Post-Completion OPT : The earliest you can apply for post-completion OPT application is 90 days prior to completion of your program . .

The latest you can apply for post-completion OPT is 60 days after completion of studies .  You must allow the OISS 14 business days to process your application. The USCIS will deny any application that is received after 60 days of completion of your program.  Completion of Program : Generally speaking, your program completion date is the last day of your last semester. Be sure to consult the  TC Academic Calendar for this information. For Doctoral students, program completion is the deadline by which they must submit all revisions to their dissertation, as determined by their review committee.  Program completion date is NOT the day Commencement or graduation date.

  • you do not receive both receipts within these timelines

  • you get a denial or request for more information from USCIS

STEP 8 : Provide a copy of the EAD to the OISS via  TC-Compass

STEP 9 : Report your employment status to the OISS via TC-Compass. Students on Post completion OPT are required by the U.S. government to report their employment status and employer information. You would then need to leave the US immediately.

PROCESSING TIME:

OISS – up to 14 business days

USCIS – up to 90 business days

H1B Cap-Gap

The time between the end of F-1 status and the beginning of H-1B employment is referred to as the cap gap. The cap-gap extension is a period in which an eligible F-1 student's status is automatically extended to bridge the gap between the end of F-1 status and the start of H-1B status. If a student is on OPT and eligible for a cap-gap extension, their F-1 status will automatically extend and they will be eligible to work while their H-1B is pending approval.  For further details take an F-1 employment workshop. If a student is not on OPT and eligible for the cap-gap extension, their F-1 status will automatically be extend but they will not be eligible to work until their H-1B status is approved.  For further details take an F-1 employment workshop.

F-1 students who completed a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in select government-designated science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields and are currently working with post-completion OPT may apply for the STEM extension of 24 months of additional employment if they have a job or job offer from an E-Verify employer and meet all the required criteria.

Carbon Dioxide Proving Its Worth in Green Energy Application

What if we could do more with carbon dioxide (CO2) than lock it safely away in the subsurface? What if this greenhouse gas could instead be used in geothermal energy and power millions of homes worldwide?

Touka Elsayed, a master’s student in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University, is winning attention by testing this concept in her research of geothermal reservoirs and CO2 properties. Her work involves modeling geothermal systems' size and heat transfer abilities, investigating how well CO2 would work in such systems, and analyzing the economics and technology involved.

“It’s called CO2 plume geothermal energy,” said Elsayed. “This innovation aims to harness the potential of carbon dioxide to generate geothermal energy while substantially contributing to sustainability and benefiting the environment.”

A new energy approach

Traditionally, geothermal energy can be sourced from natural reservoirs or dry rock. Natural reservoirs are usually associated with hot water or steam from beneath the geysers and other hydrothermal vents to power turbines for energy. Dry rock provides geothermal energy when drilling operations reach hot rock, and water is injected to extract heat from the rock through hot water or steam.

Elsayed is investigating a newer approach, called CO2 plume geothermal energy (CPG) systems, where carbon dioxide could be injected into hot porous reservoirs instead of water. Her modeling studies showed this approach allows for a more efficient heat extraction because CO2 has superior flow properties than water, such as being more buoyant, and thus would require less energy to make it flow out. Results revealed CPG also offers a method for carbon sequestration, providing a dual benefit of renewable energy generation and greenhouse gas reduction.

This innovation aims to harness the potential of carbon dioxide to generate geothermal energy while substantially contributing to sustainability and benefiting the environment.

Using CO 2 safely

Thanks to previous carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) studies, Elsayed already knew storing CO2 in the subsurface must meet specific standards to be safe and effective:

  • One or more caprocks or layers of impermeable rock are needed to keep the CO2 from permeating back to the surface.
  • The injection sites must be deep enough so that pressures and temperatures keep the gas dense or compact, so it takes up much less space than at sea level or above.
  • Porous sedimentary rock layers or a saline aquifer must be below the caprock to house the injected gas.

Gaining recognition

Elsayed created a poster of her results and presented it at the Geothermal Rising Conference in October 2023. She won first place out of a competition of 40 posters. She was among five graduate students awarded the prestigious Geothermal Rising Marcelo Lippmann 2023 Graduate Scholarship and the only master's student.

“Knowing that a respected organization like Geothermal Rising recognized my work and believed in my potential was truly inspiring,” said Elsayed. “I felt an increased awareness about my topic, which was new to everyone there. Several companies were curious to know more.”

I always believe the journey of being an engineering student is not just about earning a degree. It is about shaping your mindset and skills to become a lifelong problem solver.

In the same conference, Elsayed presented a paper she co-authored with fellow graduate student Ahmed Merzoug and their advisor, Dr. Rita Okoroafor. The paper, “Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Fracture Aperture Anisotropy on Thermal Breakthrough Using THM Modeling,” explained how fracture surfaces can impact the long-term performance of geothermal energy from hot, dry rocks.

Factoring techno economics

Elsayed is currently performing technical and economic feasibility studies, or techno economics, of CPG systems paired with a carbon capture project.

Some of the many factors she must estimate to prove the system is feasible are:

  • The different capturing technologies and the cost estimation for each.
  • The cost analysis for different components of a full CCUS value chain.
  • The heat energy gained and available to sell to utilities over the lifespan of a CPG system.

Elsayed hails from Egypt and said she has enjoyed her education at Texas A&M because students are so welcoming. While her dream job would be working as a top-tier oil and gas company strategic manager, she also wants to help facilitate the energy and sustainability transitions needed globally.

“We need to be open to new ideas and technologies,” said Elsayed. “I always believe the journey of being an engineering student is not just about earning a degree. It is about shaping your mindset and skills to become a lifelong problem solver. Everyone has the potential to make a significant difference.”

Applications sought for 2024 Engineering in Medicine pilot project program

IU School of Medicine Apr 03, 2024

Digital illustration of a man running

The Indiana University School of Medicine and the Purdue University College of Engineering are accepting research funding applications for the 2024 Engineering in Medicine Pilot Project Program. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2024.

The Engineering in Medicine Pilot Project Program is designed to support innovative and collaborative research between the IU School of Medicine and the Purdue College of Engineering. The overarching goal of these research partnerships is to develop novel technologies that will lead to innovative approaches and engineered systems for improved patient care.

Criteria and eligibility

Each pilot project must have at least one principal investigator from each of the participating institutions (IU School of Medicine and Purdue College of Engineering). Research teams are expected to propose tackling significant and collaborative research questions that wouldn’t be feasible through individual efforts. Teams should be poised to pursue a compelling, external proposal opportunity (R01 or equivalent) after receiving Engineering in Medicine pilot funding. Ultimate metrics of success for pilot projects are the development of strong collaborations that will lead to joint publications, externally funded collaborations, intellectual property disclosures and patents.

The program will provide $50,000 for one year for each pilot project, with the opportunity to competitively apply for a second year of support. The $50,000/year grant funding will be administered as two $25,000 grants (direct cost) — one each to the IU School of Medicine and the Purdue College of Engineering principal investigators. Submitted budgets should reflect this division of funding.

Proposals will be reviewed by a committee composed of faculty from IU and Purdue. Investigators with funded proposals will meet virtually with Engineering in Medicine, IU School of Medicine and Purdue College of Engineering leadership to describe progress, identify challenges and review the timeline for an external collaborative grant submission. All teams must participate in the Engineering in Medicine symposiums twice a year and provide an annual progress report.

Application instructions

Applications are due May 1 and must use Arial 11-point font with 0.5-inch margins and include the following elements:

  • Proposal Title
  • Names and affiliations of principal investigators
  • Describe how the project will provide new opportunities for potential future funding and/or intellectual property
  • Milestones and deliverables for the first year and long-term goals for the collaboration (maximum of one page)
  • NIH Biosketch plus current and pending projects for the PIs and co-investigators (if any)
  • Budget (template provided on next page), including brief justification

Proposals will be evaluated on Significance, Innovation, Approach, Collaboration, and Overall Impact. Applications do not need to be routed through Purdue Sponsored Program Services nor the IU Office of Research Administration and should be submitted by investigators via email to [email protected] by May 1, 2024. For questions: Please contact Tatiana Foroud ( [email protected] ) and/or Craig Goergen ( [email protected] ).
