How To Write a Communication Essay

Just like any other academic paper out there, a communication essay has to follow certain educational guidelines. While it may sound redundant, the goal of an essay for a communication class is to actually communicate some ideas — ideally, in a way that would persuade the audience and make them agree with you, the author. The first step, traditionally, is deciding on a topic. After that, you will have to think which point you are about to prove. Got there? Good! This point is going to be your thesis statement.

Now, it’s time to get some research done. After all, this is an academic paper you are working on, which means it will have to be supported by some valid academic sources. After you have collected enough material to prove your point of view, look for the best order to present your arguments. This structural order is going to be an outline for your paper — or, in some cases, its first draft.

While many students ignore writing an outline, crafting one does more good than harm. It may sound like a waste of time, but in practice, it helps you structure the paper in advance and stick to it while writing. This, in its turn, helps with the writing block and keeps the overall logic of your work more consistent.

An outline structure presupposes an introduction, main body paragraphs, and conclusion. The standard academic pattern is a five-paragraph essay — that is, at least three paragraphs in the main body. If it helps, think of an essay as of a story that has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

The introduction states the main idea of your paper (that is, your thesis). However, the main purpose of this paragraph is to hook the reader and make him read further. So, feel free to include any interesting stats, quotes, or questions right from the start. In this case, your thesis statement will be placed at the end of your introductory paragraph.

As it was already mentioned, an essay should have at least three body paragraphs. Make sure each one conveys a new thought (argument). At the same time, they all have to be linked together; even more — they have to contribute to your thesis statement. Remember, the goal of any essay is to prove your point of view, and the main body is where you do it.

A conclusion never includes any new information. Here, you sum up what you already have written in body paragraphs (in other words and more briefly, of course) and restate your thesis statement. Make sure you do not ‘jump’ to conclusions, though. All of the information you include here has to be directly related to the material you analyzed in the above paragraphs. Do not just state “it becomes obvious that the [thesis] is correct” — especially if the reasoning in your body paragraph was not so obvious to the reader.

Finally, do not be surprised if you do not really like your first draft. Sometimes, it takes two or three to truly ace it.

Communication is two-way process of reaching mutual understanding in which participants not only exchange information, news, ideas, and feelings but also create and share meaning (BusinessDictionary.com). Two of the communication styles are aggressive and assertive communication styles. Individuals with aggressive communication style honestly state their opinions, feelings, and wants without worrying about others’ feelings. Individuals with aggressive communication style may come as rude, demanding, and intimidating. Individuals with assertive communication styles also honestly state their opinions, feelings, and wants but in respectful manner so as not to offend others (Healthwise, 2011).

Apple’s legendary co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs was a great example of an individual with aggressive communication style. Steve Jobs’ aggressive communication style was known to alienate people he came into contact with, even strangers such as police officers and retail workers. Jobs was also known to call his subordinates shitheads (Austen, 2012). The behaviors associated with aggressive communication style include the belief that only I am right and everyone should be like me. Individuals with aggressive communication style are also poor listeners, often interrupt others, and have difficulty seeing the other person’s point of view. They also tend to be bossy and rare show appreciation towards others (Sherman).

Individuals with assertive communication style include leaders such as Tony Hsieh of Zappos whose personal philosophy is that happy workers are also productive workers. Examples of behavior displayed by individuals with assertive communication style include the belief that everyone is important and being an active listener. Other behaviors displayed by individuals with assertive communication style are being self-aware, having realistic expectations, willing to trust others, and being non-judgmental (Sherman).

The communication style which best reflects my behavior is assertive communication style. I do not hesitate to express myself but I am also willing to listen to others. I believe that one of the most effective keys to ensuring cooperation from others is to listen to them and respect them. I also believe that people have different experiences so one has no right to judge others. I also believe in clear communication because it avoids misunderstandings which is why I avoid passive communication style. I consider myself pragmatic and analyze the situation carefully. When I deal with others, I carefully look for non-verbal cues so that I do not make anyone feel uncomfortable. I have high self-confidence but I also believe one cannot achieve everything by himself/herself Thus, it is important to know how to work with people and gain their trust and respect.

I am satisfied with my communication style but there is always room for improvement. One of the ways I can improve my communication style is by taking more efforts to learn about others’ background such as cultural, social, and professional backgrounds. Different cultures have different norms and appropriate social behaviors, thus, knowing about the background can help me avoid things that may make others uncomfortable. Another strategy may be to regular seek confirmation from the speaker that his/her message has been understood just as he/she intended. This will send the message to the speaker that I am paying attention and consider him/her worthy of importance. This will improve the speaker’s cooperative attitude and trust towards me.

Different people have different communication styles and their behaviors often provide useful clues into their preferred communication styles. As Steve Jobs’ example shows, certain communication styles may be beneficial in some organizations. Thus, the speaker may benefit from taking into account factors such as organizational culture, personality of the audience, and the issue at hand before deciding upon a communication style.

The notion of communication has been present and debated in the west from pre- Socratic times. The Hippocratic Corpus, for example, is a list of symptoms and diseases; it discusses ways of “bringing together” the signs of a disease or ailment with the disease itself for the purposes of diagnosis and prognosis.

Definitions of communication often assume successful contact and interaction. Yet the importance of noncommunication (or miscommunication) in understanding what communication is should not be underestimated. This includes ambiguity, misunderstanding, lying, cheating, deception, and unconscious and willful self-deception.

People's attitudes, beliefs, and even methods of thinking can change as a result of communication. In daily life, communication is essential. Communication that flows from subordinates to superiors is upward communication like from students to teachers or teachers to principal. Horizontal communica­tion takes place between two equals, that is, between two teachers or between two students.

There are two sides to every conversation. There is a sender and a recipient involved. A message may be sent in the form of facts, instructions, questions, feelings, opinions, ideas, or in any other way. Only when the sender and the recipient have a shared understanding can communication take place. Common elements such as culture, language, and environment are included in the commonness. For persons with comparable cultural origins, words, phrases, idioms, proverbs, gestures, and expressions have tremendous potential for communication.

Importance of Communication

The idea that effective communication is the only thing that will get the work done is still true despite the tremendous advancements in technology. Understanding the components and varieties of communication is necessary before learning how to communicate with people more effectively. The sender generates the message, followed by the message itself, which should be extremely clear and understood, and the recipient’s responsibility is to decode the message. There is a good chance that two distinct persons will have completely different perspectives on the same message. The sender can prevent this issue if they are aware of the communication channel.

Types of Communication

Verbal, non-verbal, written, visual, formal, and informal communication are different forms of communication that exist.

Verbal communication includes both the sender and the recipient using voice and language. Here, words are used to communicate the message.

The body language of the individuals engaged in communication or debate is crucial in nonverbal communication. Since the conversation is not particularly loud, it is probable that the indicators may be overlooked or misunderstood. To be able to decipher the subtleties of non-verbal communication, one must be an astute observer.

The written mode of communication is incredibly important. One must very carefully construct the words in a written form as this can be documented for years to come. Professional documents including circulars, memoranda, letters, and bank statements are examples of written communication.

Information may be communicated visually by using graphical images like pie charts, bar graphs, and statistical statistics. This should all be supported by actual data, not just conjecture.

With teachers and principals, the formal method of communication is observed, where the students convey everything in a formal manner.

Informal communication takes place among groups of peers and friends and can be relaxed with no rules, commitments, or formality.

The effects of poor communication skills might vary in severity for various people. Therefore, one must master the principles and value of effective communication.

How To Be A Good Communicator

The first and most important stage is understanding the audience one is targeting. If there is a younger audience, the language ought to be straightforward and tailored to them. In this situation, it is pointless to demonstrate one's skill using complex language and big words.

Speak confidently.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

In France, debates about how to deal with disability led to the adoption of different strategies over time. While people with temporary difficulties were able to access public welfare, the most common response to people with long-term disabilities, such as hearing or vision loss, was to group them together in institutions (Tombs, 1996). At first, a joint institute for the blind and deaf was created, and although the partnership was motivated more by financial considerations than by the well-being of the residents, the institute aimed to help people develop skills valuable to society (Weygand, 2009). Eventually blind institutions were separated from deaf institutions, and the focus shifted towards education of the blind, as was the case for the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which Louis Braille attended (Jimenez et al, 2009). The growing acknowledgement of the uniqueness of different disabilities led to more targeted education strategies, fostering an environment in which the benefits of a specifically blind education could be more widely recognized.

Several different systems of tactile reading can be seen as forerunners to the method Louis Braille developed, but these systems were all developed based on the sighted system. The Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris taught the students to read embossed roman letters, a method created by the school’s founder, Valentin Hauy (Jimenez et al., 2009). Reading this way proved to be a rather arduous task, as the letters were difficult to distinguish by touch. The embossed letter method was based on the reading system of sighted people, with minimal adaptation for those with vision loss. As a result, this method did not gain significant success among blind students.

Louis Braille was bound to be influenced by his school’s founder, but the most influential pre-Braille tactile reading system was Charles Barbier’s night writing. A soldier in Napoleon’s army, Barbier developed a system in 1819 that used 12 dots with a five line musical staff (Kersten, 1997). His intention was to develop a system that would allow the military to communicate at night without the need for light (Herron, 2009). The code developed by Barbier was phonetic (Jimenez et al., 2009); in other words, the code was designed for sighted people and was based on the sounds of words, not on an actual alphabet. Barbier discovered that variants of raised dots within a square were the easiest method of reading by touch (Jimenez et al., 2009). This system proved effective for the transmission of short messages between military personnel, but the symbols were too large for the fingertip, greatly reducing the speed at which a message could be read (Herron, 2009). For this reason, it was unsuitable for daily use and was not widely adopted in the blind community.

Nevertheless, Barbier’s military dot system was more efficient than Hauy’s embossed letters, and it provided the framework within which Louis Braille developed his method. Barbier’s system, with its dashes and dots, could form over 4000 combinations (Jimenez et al., 2009). Compared to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, this was an absurdly high number. Braille kept the raised dot form, but developed a more manageable system that would reflect the sighted alphabet. He replaced Barbier’s dashes and dots with just six dots in a rectangular configuration (Jimenez et al., 2009). The result was that the blind population in France had a tactile reading system using dots (like Barbier’s) that was based on the structure of the sighted alphabet (like Hauy’s); crucially, this system was the first developed specifically for the purposes of the blind.

While the Braille system gained immediate popularity with the blind students at the Institute in Paris, it had to gain acceptance among the sighted before its adoption throughout France. This support was necessary because sighted teachers and leaders had ultimate control over the propagation of Braille resources. Many of the teachers at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth resisted learning Braille’s system because they found the tactile method of reading difficult to learn (Bullock & Galst, 2009). This resistance was symptomatic of the prevalent attitude that the blind population had to adapt to the sighted world rather than develop their own tools and methods. Over time, however, with the increasing impetus to make social contribution possible for all, teachers began to appreciate the usefulness of Braille’s system (Bullock & Galst, 2009), realizing that access to reading could help improve the productivity and integration of people with vision loss. It took approximately 30 years, but the French government eventually approved the Braille system, and it was established throughout the country (Bullock & Galst, 2009).

Although Blind people remained marginalized throughout the nineteenth century, the Braille system granted them growing opportunities for social participation. Most obviously, Braille allowed people with vision loss to read the same alphabet used by sighted people (Bullock & Galst, 2009), allowing them to participate in certain cultural experiences previously unavailable to them. Written works, such as books and poetry, had previously been inaccessible to the blind population without the aid of a reader, limiting their autonomy. As books began to be distributed in Braille, this barrier was reduced, enabling people with vision loss to access information autonomously. The closing of the gap between the abilities of blind and the sighted contributed to a gradual shift in blind people’s status, lessening the cultural perception of the blind as essentially different and facilitating greater social integration.

The Braille system also had important cultural effects beyond the sphere of written culture. Its invention later led to the development of a music notation system for the blind, although Louis Braille did not develop this system himself (Jimenez, et al., 2009). This development helped remove a cultural obstacle that had been introduced by the popularization of written musical notation in the early 1500s. While music had previously been an arena in which the blind could participate on equal footing, the transition from memory-based performance to notation-based performance meant that blind musicians were no longer able to compete with sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997). As a result, a tactile musical notation system became necessary for professional equality between blind and sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997).

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

Introduction.

Communication is an essential part of human interaction, and it happens in two modalities that are verbal and nonverbal. Nonverbal communication plays a vital role in how others understand information and meaning. Through it, people can express their feelings and create impressions. The actions can be intentional or unintentional and offer clues about conversations. They include facial expressions, gestures, eye gaze, and haptics through touch.

In a restaurant at about 12 noon, two ladies are seated on a table sipping fruit juice. One lady, who appears to be 28 years of age, is dressed in a blue dress, while the other, around 35 years, is in a white blouse and a pair of jeans. They first talk about other staff before starting to talk about another topic. The two might be talking about a cloth; the lady in the blue dress is the customer, while the other is like a designer. They refer to a book with many pictures in an artifact of gowns and discuss each one by one looking at how they are perusing the pages.

Facial expressions in communication can convey emotions without uttering a word. Their facial expressions, eye contact and kinetics as they move from page to page reveal satisfaction with different gowns. Affect displays their frowning which imply that they are not satisfied with some of them. When they see a photo in which they are not satisfied, they exchange a sad face and move on to the next. I imagined one to be the designer because she is making most of the explanations and gestures, congruent communication about the gowns, attention to detail, and understanding of fit for the dresses.

The client stands up to explain what seems like her likes through body actions by showing the length of her desired gown and using illustrators to show the shape. The designer sketches something down while nodding in agreement, communicating through regulators. The designer also stands up to do a figure shape assessment of the client using a tape measure portraying haptics displaying areas that need emphasis such as hips. The client does not show proxemics because the other people in the restaurant do not make her shy from standing up to show her desired style of cloth.

From my observation, the client is the dominant of the pair because she got a say in what she wants, and her interests must be considered in the design. The two are happy because their conversation is filled with smiles and showing of contentment and satisfaction as they go across the pages. Towards the end of the booklet with pictures, the client shows the feeling of being surprised by a photo, and one can read from her lips the term wow, communication using vocalics.

She is impressed because she found what she was precisely looking for. The designer seems happy, too, and compares her sketch to the picture, and they both nod in agreement and clap their hands in the air after exchanging a few words showing the use of emblems. The designer gets a piece of clothing from a purse that contains different small patches of different materials and they both start feeling the textures of the pieces. Through their smiles, they agree on a texture, and the designer notes it. They both stand and wave goodbye before leaving the restaurant.

Nonverbal communication is a significant part of peoples daily conversations.When humans are conversing they cannot avoid it since it shows emotions and emphasizes what people say. This paper has portrayed the different ways in which non-verbal communication comes up in communication, like an artifact, kinetics, affect displays, congruent communication, regulators, proxemics, and vocalics, to mention a few. Nonverbal communication is evident in communication between people of the same level or even different groups.
