THE PROPHET'S PERSONALITY

THE PROPHET'S PERSONALITY

Many anecdotes bear witness to Muhammad's (pbuh) great affection for children. For example, he once had Umama on his shoulders at the time of worship, and he kept her there, putting her down when he bowed or prostrated, then picking her up again. When Aisha came into his household as his betrothed, she brought her toys with her, and he enjoyed watching her play with ‘Solomon's horses'.

Muhammad (pbuh) had many close men friends. It was said that when he talked to people, he always gave them such complete attention that each would seem to be the most important person in the world. Ten friends were to be of particular importance for the part they were to play in the development of Islam after his death, and these will be described in detail in the next chapter. One of the greatest personal blows to him was the death of Zayd Ibn Haritha, for whom he still felt a fatherly tenderness, although no longer legally his adoptive father. Few men were as close to Muhammad as Zayd, and he was entrusted with the leadership of nine expeditions - far more than anyone else except the Prophet. He died leading an expedition to Muta on the borders of Byzantine Syria in AH 8 (629).

Tradition gives many examples of Muhammad's (pbuh) fondness for animals, with which he had close dealings all through his life. An often-repeated story is that he took off - or even cut - his cloak to avoid waking a cat that was asleep on it.

Muhammad (pbuh) was a man of great physical courage and endurance. Between the approximate ages of 50 and 60 he led the Muslims in twenty-seven of their eighty-odd expeditions and engagements. Various authors describe how he had chain-mail armour and was skilled with sword, spear and bow and arrow. Even while on campaign, he was careful of his personal appearance, according to Ibn Saad, taking with him mirror, comb, and hair-oil. But he was no dandy; his clothes were few and simple, and he made them last until they were very old.

Aisha is reported as remarking that besides women and perfume he liked food, especially sweet things, but that while he had been blessed with the first two, he had not had much of the third. He took two meals a day, sitting on the ground, usually either barley-bread or dates or a little meat, and he milked his own goats and drank their milk, but he fasted every Monday and Thursday. On one occasion he was presented with a pumpkin, which he enjoyed so much that he continued to speak of it long after.

The missing element from our image of Muhammad is his portrait. The early Muslims refrained from creating any image that might be taken as an idol, and even the Persian miniaturists left a blank in place of his face. In modern times, the same reticence has prevented the making of films portraying his life, with the one exception of The Message. Again, Ibn Saad offers the most information. He is said to have been of a little more than medium height, broad-chested and sturdily built, and he walked quickly, like a man going downhill. He had a large head with a prominent forehead, dark, wavy hair, which he wore down to his shoulders, and a thick beard. His eyes were large and dark, his nose hooked and his mouth wide. He was often grave and silent, but never idle. When he spoke, it was always rapidly and to the point. His voice was gentle, and he scarcely ever raised it.

Muhammad's (pbuh) last illness came when he was about 62, two months after returning from his Farewell Pilgrimage. His thoughts had been on death, and he had spent the night before the first symptoms praying in the cemetery of al-Baqi, where so many of his family and friends lay buried. With his usual tact, he asked permission of his other wives to be moved to Aisha's room for her to nurse him. Some thought this was acknowledgment that she was his favourite, but it could just have been because her room had a door into the mosque. His condition grew rapidly worse. On Monday the 12th of First Rabi, AH 11 (8 June 632), at the hour of the dawn worship, he appeared at the door of Aisha's room and raised his hand to the worshippers.

Abu Bakr had been delegated to lead the worship during the Prophet's (pbuh) illness. Thinking that his appearance at Aisha's door meant that he was getting better, Abu Bakr left to see his wife on the edge of Medina, from which he had to be recalled in haste. Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah died in the heat of noon that Monday. It was the day said to be the tenth anniversary of his arrival in Medina and conventionally taken to be his birthday. Worn out by his exertions and his privations, he was ready to die, having completed his life's work.

Essay on The Holy Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)

Our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was born in Makkah in the famous tribe of Quraish. His father, Abdullah died before his birth. So his mother, Amna Bibi looked after him. But she also died when he was only six years old. New, his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib took charge of him, but he did not live long. Finally, his uncle, Abu Talib looked after him and never left him alone in any hardship.

Our Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) married Khadija, a wealthy lady of Makkah when he was twenty-five years old. Hazrat Khadija handed over all her wealth to our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to spend for good and noble purposes. He helped the poor and needy. When our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) reached the age of forty he was commanded by Allah, the Almighty to preach Islam. Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) started preaching that there is no God but Allah who is the creator of the universe and to whom all human beings would return.

The people of Makkah accepted Islam very slowly. In the beginning, only a few people accepted the new religion. The Makkans indeed became the sworn enemy of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and his follower. They created all sort of troubles for the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) but he stood firm. At last, they planned to kill the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and he was compelled to leave for Medina where he was accorded a warm welcome by his followers. But the infidels did not allow him to live even there in peace. They fought several battles in order to wipe out the followers of Islam. However, Allah granted strength to our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) to defeat them and come out successful in his mission.

After ten years stay in Medinah, the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) came back to Makkah with ten thousand of his followers and conquered Makkah. On the day of his conquest, he could severely punish those who caused so much trouble and planned to kill him, but he excused everybody. After that, the new religion prospered by leaps and bounds.

Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) returned to his Creator at the age of sixty-three. He left for his followers the Holy Quran and the Sunnah.

905-487-8501, 0203-002-0934, personality characteristics of the prophet muhammad (pbuh).

Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) is the last Prophet of Allah Almighty, who was born in 570 A.D in the city of Makkah. Right from his childhood, He was very different fromother ordinary people and later in His life; he used to stay in the cave of Hira to find the spirituality he was always looking for. Finally He received a revelation from Allah Almighty when the angel named Jibrael (A.S) was sent down by Allah to disclose the very first five Ayahs from Surah Al-Alaq upon Him which is translated as:

“Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clot. Read, for your Lord is most Generous, Who teaches by means of the pen, teaches man what he does not know.” (96: 1-5)

The holy Quran was officially revealed upon Him then and He became the last and final Prophet of Allah after that. He had extraordinary characteristics in his personality which is why He got such a huge honor to be chosen as the messenger of the Almighty. The Arabs were blessed in a sense that they got the opportunity to get enlightened by the teachings of Allah from Muhammad (PBUH) as He is regarded as the noblest Prophet of all, and that too is possible only because he had a great character.

Now let us discuss some of the most important personality traits of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Kindness to all

The courtesy and good manners of the Prophet (PBUH) are well known as He was not only kind hearted to other fellow human beings particularly to the children but also to the animals. It was the time when the Arabs used to feel shame in being loving and affectionate to their kids.

“The Messenger of God (PBUH) performed Salah (prayer) while he was carrying an infant girl named Umaamah, daughter of Abul-Aas. When he bowed, he put her on the ground, and when he stood up, he would carry her again.” (Bukhari #5650)

Such was the high degree of love in the heart of Muhammad (PBUH) towards children that He used to tell other Arabs to love their kids and to be fearful from Allah in this regard. He was also kind in His behavior towards animals.

During a journey, somebody picked up some birds eggs. The bird’s painful note and fluttering attracted the attention of the Prophet (PBUH) who asked the man to replace the eggs. [Al-Bukhaari]

The above mentioned Hadith shows how well mannered Muhammad (PBUH) used to be that he was consistent in His behavior towards all the living creatures.

Truthfulness and promise fulfilling

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always spoke the truth in His entire life and always taught others to base their personalities around this act. Even His enemies used to testify that they had never seen as truthful and honest person as Him. The Holy Quran also gives evidence about the truthfulness of Muhammad (PBUH).

“We know indeed that what they say certainly grieves you, but surely they do not call you a liar; but the unjust deny the verses of God.” (Qur’an 6:33)

Allah Himself testifies about this great attribute observed in the personality of the Prophet (PBUH). He earned the title of Al-Ameen (trustworthy), which is why even the non believers used to keep their valuable things in the custody of Muhammad (PBUH) as they trusted him for his promise fulfilling nature.

Leading by example

Muhammad (PBUH) did not spread Islam by dictating others, rather he always did His best to serve as a guiding principle to others by acting upon Allah`s teachings Himself first. Before the famous battle with non believers called “Ghazwa-e-Khandaq”, He participated Himself in the digging trench just outside Madina, and He even lifted the heaviest stones during the process.

Indeed the Noble Qur’an says:

“Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exemplar for him who hopes in Allah and the latter day and remembers Allah much.” (Qur’an 33:21)

It is evident from the above Ayah that Prophet (PBUH) is indeed a great example for all of us to succeed in this world and hereafter. He was such a visionary leader that he saved the Muslims from going extinct by agreeing to the treaty of Hudaibiah  for ten years which proved to be vital for success of the Muslims later against non believers.

Jabir b. Abdullah narrates that:

“The Prophet (PBUH) did not refuse to give anything which he had to someone if he asked for it.” (Bukhari #5687)

As Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, so the Prophet (PBUH) always emphasized on its importance by doing charity, used to observe Zakat and showed the real meaning of it by sharing everything He had with other needy people.

Cooperative

The Prophet (PBUH) always did His own work by Himself and helped the family members in the daily work. Aishah (R.A) once said:

“He helped and assisted his family members with their chores; but when the call to prayer was heard, he would [stop everything and] leave to attend the prayers.”

Muhammad (PBUH) always showed through His character about the virtue of team work and collaboration as observed in the battle of Khandaq, where He participated along with other Muslims in digging trench. (Repeated Example)

Pleasant appearance

Muhammad (PBUH) had a great personality in terms of physical appearance as well as His conduct.

According to Al-Bara’:

“The Prophet (PBUH) was the handsomest of all people, and had the best appearance. He was neither very tall nor short.” (Bukhari)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always used to keep smiling expressions on His face, and He was a very friendly person.

Abdullah bin al-Harith said:

“I have never seen a man who smiled as much as the Messenger of God (PBUH).” (Tirmidthi #2641)

There is a lesson for each and every one of us in the personality of Muhammad (PBUH) to keep good relationships with others through our kind and friendly behavior.

The Holy Prophet spent a very simple life. He used to have a single dress to wear, cleaned His clothes and mended His shoes Himself. He always preached others to avoid going towards materialism by not accumulating any kind of wealth in His entire life. He never ate to fill his stomach, rather he used to fast, and on many time He would wrap stones around His belly to avoid having a feeling for hunger.

“Look at those who are at a lower level than you, but do not look at those who are at a higher level than you, because that would make it conducive to (Allah upon you) slightly (in the eye).” (Muslim)

He always had satisfaction with His life and never complained about lacking anything. Despite being the Prophet of Allah Almighty, he never considered living a life like a king which he could easily have.

Muhammad (PBUH) was well known for his humbleness and humility as He never said No to anybody seeking His help. His openness and candidness also played a vital role in spreading Islam as He treated everyone alike regardless of their statuses.

“A woman from the people of Madeenah who was partially insane said to the Prophet (PBUH): ‘I have to ask you [your help] about something.’ He helped her and took care of her needs.” (Bukhari #670)

He did not discriminate among people and used to help everyone without any intention of return. He used to visit the sick, accepted invitations from the poor, and attended the funerals. He never considered Himself as a better person than others; rather He always lived a very modest life.

The compassionate behavior of the Prophet (PBUH) was highly notable. He never took revenge for personal matters, e.g. when He used to walk through the streets of Makkah, an old lady used to throw garbage on His head. One day when she did not throw garbage on Him, He went to see her. He found that the old lady was sick. He looked after the old lady till she got better.  The Prophet Muhammad (s) once said:

““Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to people.” Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 9, #473.

He forgave all the non believers after winning the last battle of Makkah. This kind and courteous conduct of Muhammad (PBUH) made the Kuffaars (non believers) to embrace Islam. That was not the first time that the Prophet (PBUH) showed His people to forgive others. He also forgave a woman named Hind (after the victory of Makkah), who had eaten the liver of the Prophet`s (PBUH) uncle Hazrat Hamza (May Allah be pleased with him).

Epitome of ethics

The Holy Prophet`s (PBUH) whole life is a personification of goodness and morality. He never said any vulgar word in His entire life, even when he was abused and made fun of by the non believers. Instead of being offended, He used to pray for their well being. Allah Almighty Himself testifies in the Holy Quran:

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character” (Qur’an 68:4)

It is not possible to describe the greatness of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in one attempt, because there is a multitude of characteristics of His personality which make Him a great person. He changed the lives of the illiterate Arabs who were enemies of one another and could not live a day in peace. The character of Muhammad (PBUH) is not only a huge source of inspiration for the Muslims but for all human beings. All the societal issues and evils could be eradicated if we all follow His teachings and act like him.

I thought to myself that it’s better that I eat all of them cheerfully and please the poor man. I did not want to hurt the feelings of that poor man.”

Once after a long journey when Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions laid off from their rides they decided that they will sacrifice a lamb for their dinner. One by one everybody started taking responsibility for work like:

One of the companions volunteered: “I will sacrifice the lamb.” Another: “I will skin it.” Third: “I will cook it.” Fourth: ” I will….”

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) then said: “I will gather the wood from the desert.”

The group: “O Messenger of Allah, it is not becoming of you to discomfort yourself as such. You rest. We will be honored to do all this on our own.”

The Prophet (S.A.W.): “I know that you are eager to do it all, but Allah isn’t pleased with the slave who distinguishes between himself and his companions, and considers himself better than others.”

He went to her and carried luggage for her and asked about where she was going and why? She told him she was leaving town because there is was magician in town named as Muhammad (SAW).

Prophet Muhammad (SWT) remained quiet and when they reached the destination the old woman said,”O, kind person! At least tell me your name!”. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) replied,”I am the person because of whom you left the town.” She was so shocked that such a kind person can never be a magician and so she embraced Islam.

15 Things About The Character of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Every Muslim Must Spread

If there is any personality that has lived on the face of this earth who was complete in every regard and the life of whom can serve as a beacon of guidance for people of every walk of life, that personality would undeniably be the personality of Muhammad (PBUH). Muslims follow Him because of Him being the Prophet as their religion and those who do not follow Islam also hold Him at a higher pedestal when it comes to human character.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born in Saudi Arabia in the city of Makkah about 1400 years ago. Since then the world has not seen the likes of Him in every regard and the study of human history shows that there have been none better than Him before Him as well.

The key factor that brings reverence and respect to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in both the Islamic and the non-Islamic circles is His character. He was the best in character and He also said about in one of His hadiths in the following way:

“God has sent me to perfect good manners and to do good deeds.” (Bukhari)

The lines below discuss some major character traits of Prophet (PBUH) that every Muslim should spread as much as possible.

1. All For The Sake Of Allah:

Prophet (PBUH) as selfless as a person could be in life. All his undertakings and motives were just to fulfill the order of Allah and He did not undertake any action out of His personal desire and will. He lived everyday of His life for the sake of Allah and everything which He did was for the Almighty. The extent of His selflessness can be seen from the example of His preaching in the valley of Taif, where people lead naughty children to throw stones at Him while He was preaching. He had to run for His life and He was all covered in blood. But still He did not complain to Allah about Him, rather one of His companions narrates:

“The Prophet (PBUH) resembled a Prophet who was harmed by His people. He wiped the blood from His face and said: ‘O God! Forgive my people, for they know not!” (Bukhari)

Such is the selflessness in His character and every moment of His life was for the sake of Allah and spreading His message.

2. Mannerism:

Prophet (PBUH) was the epitome of good manners. Every action that He undertook in life represented the highest morals and manners that a person could exhibit. He was an Ideal being in terms of manners and ethics, the likes of which the world has not seen. As one of His companions notes about His manners:

“The Prophet (PBUH) did not swear at anyone, nor was He rude, nor did He curse anyone. If He desired to reprimand someone, He would say: ‘What is wrong with him, may dust be cast in his face!” (Bukhari)

Thus if a Muslim is to give an example of the manners of someone, there would be none more suitable than Muhammad (PBUH).

People think that being a religious leader of Islam, Prophet (PBUH) had nothing to do with humor, rather He was all strictness and stringency. This perception is wrong, as Prophet (PBUH) was the one with the finest sense of humor, the likes of which again cannot be seen in anyone. His sense of humor was not vulgar in any sense or anything that would debase or make fun of someone, rather it was fine. Anas (RA) reports such an example by saying:

“Once a man asked Muhammad (PBUH) for an animal to ride. He replied that He would give him the baby of a she-camel to ride on. The man asked ‘What would he do with a she-camel baby?’ Muhammad (PBUH) replied, ‘Is there any camel which is not born of a she-camel?’”

4. Peace Lover:

The general notion regarding Islam and Prophet (PBUH) is that they both encouraged violence in people and were and are not in favor of peace. It is totally baseless, because the religion Islam itself is peace and Prophet (PBUH) was a lover of peace. He wanted people to live in harmony and always encouraged people resolve their differences by opting for peace, instead of going for violence. In one of His hadith Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Let us go to resolve the situation and make peace between them.” (Bukhari)

Thus, Muslims should spread His message of peace by giving examples out of the actions He undertook to ensure peace.

5. Kind To The Kids:

Prophet (PBUH) always treated kids with kindness and mercy. He always enjoyed their company and played with them to make them happy. One such example can be seen from His life when He used to say to kids:

“I’ll give such and such (i.e. gift or so) to the one who comes to me first.”

So they used to race and fall on His back and chest. (Ahmad)

This shows His treatment towards kids and there are countless other examples in His lifetime where He commanded parents to be loving and caring towards their children.

6. Generosity:

Generosity is another hallmark of the personality of Muhammad (PBUH) . He was the most generous person there could ever be. He preferred others over Himself and always fulfilled the needs of anyone who came to Him to ask for something. One of His companions notes:

“The Prophet (PBUH) did not refuse to give anything which He had to someone if he asked for it.” (Bukhari)

His generosity is something that Muslims should aspire to and spread the examples of His generosity to other people as well so that the world could become a better place.

7. Caring Of Women:

Another allegation against Islam is that it is a religion that oppresses women, therefore, being the bringer of the religion, Muhammad (PBUH) is also attributed with women oppressing attributes. This perception is also wrong, because Prophet (PBUH) was very caring of the rights of the women and commended His followers to give special treatment to women by giving them respect and equal rights that they ought to have. In one of His hadiths He said:

“Whoever (brings up) two girls till they come of age, will be in the next world along with me, like my two fingers joining each other.” (Abu Dawud)

If He were an oppressor of women, He could have simply mentioned male orphan children, however, He gave preference to raising up of female children. This shows the care He had for women and their rights.

8. Pleasantness:

Another misconception is that Prophet (PBUH) would be someone who would always be harsh and strict on the people He interacted with. It is also a wrong perception because Prophet (PBUH) was the most pleasant person. He would greet everyone with a smile and always spoke to people with gentleness. His companion said about Him:

“I have never seen a man who smiled as much as the Messenger of Allah.” (Tirmidhi)

This shows that the personality of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was pleasant and gentle. A person who would smile most of the times ought to leave a good impression on people, and wherever He would go He ought to have spread love and pleasantness.

9. Concerned About Orphans:

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not just love who were around Him, nor did He only loved those who were related to Him, rather He considered the entire society. In society, He was especially considerate of orphans and would commend His followers to take special care of the orphans as they did not have parents to look after them. In one of His hadiths, He said:

“The best house among the Muslims is one where an orphan is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims is one where an orphan is badly treated.” (Ibn Majah)

Muslims must take a leaf out of His treatment of orphans and treat the orphans fairly and wherever one sees the orphans being oppressed, a Muslim should raise voice for it and stop it from happening.

10. Cooperation:

Prophet (PBUH) is the best and the highest among people, however, whilst all the greatness and grandeur, He was cooperative towards people and helped others in doing the chores in any way He could help them. He never treated Himself as someone special, rather He would mix with common people and cooperate with them in any way He could. As one of His companion narrates regarding the battle of Trench:

“I saw the Messenger of Allah on the Day of the Trench carrying dirt (that was dug from the trench) until His chest was covered with dirt.” (Bukhari)

Thus, a Muslim must also not value status or rank, rather be helping towards people and give his or her fair share in the efforts that all of the people are putting.

11. Animal Rights Activist:

Perhaps Muhammad (PBUH) was the first animal rights activist on the face of this earth who raised voice for the fair treatment of animal. He told people that animals were also creation of Allah and they deserved to be treated fairly, instead of being harsh, strict and ignorant towards them. Hazrat Aisha (RA) narrated:

“I once found difficulty in riding a horse, so I kept reining it in repeatedly. The Prophet (PBUH) then said, ‘You must have gentleness.’” (Muslim)

Ergo, Muslims should learn from His treatment of animals and should try being as gentle and as considerate towards animals as possible and treat them fairly.

12. Disassociation From Worldly Possessions:

A person who is so selfless that He would give anything that He had to anyone who asked for it and would do everything for the sake of Allah, it is quite natural that person has little or no concern with the worldly possessions. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not want anything of this world, rather whatever He had He spent it on other people and helped them solve their material problems and issues. Regarding this attribute of His personality, one of His companions notes:

“The Messenger of Allah did not leave any gold or silver currency, or a slave, male or female, after his death. He only left behind his white mule, his weapons and a piece of land which He declared as charity.” (Bukhari)

Prophet (PBUH) was the Prophet of Allah, the leader of Islam however, when He passed away all He left was nothing as mentioned in the above hadith. Therefore, one can realize the disconcert He had for the worldly possessions and material things.

13. Modesty:

Another striking personality attribute of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is His modesty. He was the modest of all and never encouraged any kind of vulgarity, rather He was bashful and strongly encouraged modesty in His followers. In one of His hadiths, He said:

“Modesty is a part of teachings of the previous Prophets and anyone who lacks it is most likely to do whatever he likes.” (Reported by Abdullah ibn Maslamah)

Thus, modesty is imperative to Islam and Prophet (PBUH) being a living and breathing Islam ascertains that He was modest in every respect.

14. Considerate:

Whether it be animals, women, children, orphans, enemies, fellow Muslims, followers, elders, or it be anyone in the society, for everyone of them Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was considerate. He would love children and orphans, He would treat animals fairly, He would give women their rights, He would respect the elders, He would provide what people asked of Him, thus He was considerate to everyone without any discrimination. Prophet (PBUH) said in a hadith:

“I stand up for prayer intending to prolong it. In the meantime I hear the wailing of a baby and I have to shorten my prayer, being apprehensive lest my recitation of a long verse may tell upon the baby’s mother.” (Bukhari)

15. General Appearance:

In His general appearance , Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as beautiful, pure, simple, gentle and yet so common as any other person could be. His general appearance is detailed by one of His companions in the following way:

“The Prophet (PBUH) was a person of average height. His shoulder were wide. His hair reached his earlobes. Once I saw Him adorned in a red garment; I never saw anything more beautiful than Him.” (Bukhari)

In a nutshell, no matter whichever walk of life it is, whatever situation of life it is, a Muslim is to turn towards the personality of Muhammad (PBUH) and find that particular piece of guidance from it. Muslims must spread the life of Prophet (PBUH) because it is not only good for Muslims, rather the goodwill that comes from it has a universal appeal and will help make the world a better place.

Personality Traits of Prophet Muhammad SAW

' src=

The Holy Prophet himself was the best example of the good moral character to emulate when he was giving a call to his followers. Before advising them to adopt a moral life by giving sermons and counsels, he was sowing the seeds of morality among his followers by actually living that kind of life. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) is the centre of the characteristics of all Messengers of Almighty Allah. Allah says:

“Certainly, is for you in (the) Messenger (of) Allah an excellent example for (one) who has hope (in) Allah and the Day the Last, and remembers Allah much.” (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21)

Even today, Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) is considered to be the finest leader with the highest moral values. He was sent to the world with the huge responsibility of spreading Allah’s word and guiding the entire humanity to the right path. It was his upright character and integrated personality which impressed people and helped them see the truth in an era when the world was immersed in the gloom of kufr. Allah says:

قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

“Say, “Indeed, my prayer, and my rites of sacrifice, and my living, and my dying (are) for Allah, Lord (of) the worlds.” (Surah Al-An`am 6:162)

The Holy Prophet spent a very simple life. He used to have a single dress to wear, cleaned His clothes and mended His shoes Himself. He always preached to others to avoid going towards materialism by not accumulating any kind of wealth in His entire life. He never ate to fill his stomach, rather he used to fast, and many times He would wrap stones around His belly to avoid having a feeling of hunger. Allah says:

Listed below are a few of his personality traits that all Muslims must know and try to adopt:

  • Allah comes first:  Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) gave utmost priority to Allah’s orders. He would follow His commands with devotion and love. He endured every hardship with patience because, for him, the duty he was assigned by Allah was greater than his comforts.
  • Truthful:  Even before the advent of Islam and any revelation, Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was known as Sadiq (the truthful one) and Ameen (trustworthy). Everyone who knew him could give testimony to his honesty.
  • Did as he preached:  He was the perfect Muslim. He taught the ways of Islam by following every one of Allah’s orders and then by asking the ummah to follow them. His exemplary personality would impress people into adhering to Islamic teachings.
  • Simplicity:  Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) led a simple life. He would do all his chores himself, eat simple food, and live in small houses.
  • Generous:  He was a generous person and loved helping others.
  • Pleasant persona:  He was so gentle in his manners and always friendly towards others that people would talk to him easily and respectfully.
  • Modest: Allah’s Apostle (P.B.U.H) was modest in his manners and clothing. He strongly opposed vulgarity.
  • Patient:  Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was tested by Allah in various ways but he never complained. He always remained patient when faced with hardships. When he gained power over his enemies, he didn’t take any revenge but forgave them all, presenting the greatest example for the entire humanity.
  • Fair and just: He not only advocated justice but carried it out well.
  • Spread goodness and forbade evil:  Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) practised good deeds and spread it devotedly, and stopped people from evil ones.
  • Easy on himself, without transgressing the limits of Allah:  Islam doesn’t require one to burden himself.
  • Ethical and well-mannered:  Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) never had any formal schooling. He had been taught by the Lord of the worlds and, indeed, He knows the best. Muhammad (P.B.U.H)’s mannerisms and ethical values were outstanding and Allah was pleased with them. He says in Qur’an : “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” ( 68:4)
  • Truthfulness and promise-fulfilling: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always spoke the truth in His entire life and always taught others to base their personalities around this act.
  • Leading by example: Muhammad (PBUH) did not spread Islam by dictating others, rather he always did His best to serve as a guiding principle to others by acting upon Allah`s teachings Himself first.
  • Cooperative: The Prophet (PBUH) always did His work by Himself and helped the family members in the daily work.
  • Pleasant appearance: Muhammad (PBUH) had a great personality in terms of physical appearance as well as His conduct.
  • Modesty: Muhammad (PBUH) was well known for his humbleness and humility as He never said No to anybody seeking His help. His openness and candidness also played a vital role in spreading Islam as He treated everyone alike regardless of their statuses.
  • The epitome of ethics: The Holy Prophet`s (PBUH) whole life is a personification of goodness and morality. He never said any vulgar word in His entire life, even when he was abused and made fun of by the non-believers .

It is not possible to describe the greatness of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in one attempt, because there is a multitude of characteristics of His personality which make Him a great person. He changed the lives of the illiterate Arabs who were enemies of one another and could not live a day in peace. Allah says:

لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَبِذَٰلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

“No partners for Him; and with that, I have been commanded. And I am (the) first (of) the ones who surrender.” (Surah Al-An`am 6:163)

The character of Muhammad (PBUH) is not only a huge source of inspiration for Muslims but all human beings. All the societal issues and evils could be eradicated if we all follow His teachings and act like him. Allah says:

“Indeed, We know that it grieves you what they say. And indeed, they (do) not deny you but the wrongdoers – the Verses of Allah they reject.” ( Surah A l-An`am 6:33)

Allah’s last Messenger, Muhammad (P.B.U.H), had the most upright character and a personality like none other. We can never be as perfect as him but we must strive to follow in his footsteps to achieve greater rewards in the hereafter.

My Favourite Personality – Hazrat Muhammad (sm)

All men are the best creations of the Almighty Allah. Yet the qualities of each and everyone are not the same and similar. A man within his short span of life may come in touch with many men, but all are not admired equally. Up to the very moment of my life, I have found many men and studied the life and works of many men both alive and dead. Amongst them, I admire Hazrat Muhammad (sm) — the last prophet of the Muslims.

He was born in the famous Quraish family of Macca in 570 AD. His father was Abdullah and mother was Amina. He was a posthumous child because he lost his father before he was born. Then he was brought up by Abdul Mutaleb – his grandfather and later by Abu Taleb — his uncle.

His early life was quite different from other men in the world. Truly speaking, he was a class by himself from all times to come. He was very thoughtful. He was the lover and worshiper of truth and beauty. He never told lies but spoke the truth at all costs. People in Arabia either friend or foe called him AlAmin – the trustworthy.

His youth: My admired man was very honest to the penny since his boyhood. He liked living a very plain life. At the age of 25, he married Khadija Begum — a 40 years old lady by dint of his stainless character. She was the then richest lady in Arabia. He got immense wealth from her but he spent it on the well-being of the poor.

My admired man declared the Oneness of Allah. He contemplated in the Mount Hera. He attempted to preach Islam all over Arabia. Then people in Arabia were very ignorant and dunderheaded. They hated Hazrat Muhammad (sm) and did not believe in his teachings the dictates of Allah. They believed in many gods and goddesses. He faced a lot of Troubles in preaching Islam. It was his only target of life to declare the oneness of Allah and to preach Islam and its teachings. When he attained the age of forty, the holy Quran was revealed on him. Ile taught the common people the dictates and ideals of the Quran. Ile preached, “He is the best of you who reads the Quran and Teaches others.”

The Arabs in those days were the worshipers of many gods and goddesses. They did not believe in the teaching of my admired man. The period was known or called the Day of Ignorance. Whatever he told the people about God and Islam, they took it otherwise. It made them annoyed more seriously. The Arabs pelted at stones him, wanted to have killed him and drive him away from the country. For the sake of his life, he with some of his followers left for Medina from Mecca. The day of Hizri Year began on and from his leaving Mecca. The people of Medina received him warmly. Many of them accepted Islam. Then he conquered Medina. In Islamic history, this is known as a conquest of Medina.

My admired man-made reformations in all respects. He was a dedicated person to the services of mankind without making any distinction between caste and creed. He treated all equally. He made social, religious and other reformations in the then Arab society. He attempted hard or made frantic efforts to build up an exploitation-free society. During the Dark Age, the Arabs buried their daughters alive as a token of poverty. He made people understand that the burying of a living being is a great sin. He called upon the people of Medina to be united in order to maintain peace, harmony, multi-relation, and discipline among them. Then he made a Magna Carta with 47 sections. Once the people of Macca promised to kill him. They appeared before him with an apology. The Prophet (sm) asked how they would like to be treated. They replied in one voice, “Akhun karimun wabnuakhin karim”. — “Ye, our brother of kindness. We expect a kind behavior from you.” Then he forgave and set them free.

Hazrat Muhammad (sm) had a unique character. His character was stainless, spotless and perfect in quality. His character was a more unmixed blessing than that of the moon. The holy scriptures still bear the testimony of his character. His kindness was unique. He showed kindness even to his dead enemy who wanted to have killed him. He forgave the old wicked woman who put thrones on his way secretly.

Hazrat Muhammad (sm) died in 623 AD. at the age of 63 years only. The whole world mourned for his sudden demise. My admired man is the best of a lot of all men and women. We are also fortunate to be his ummat. He dedicated his life to the whole Muslim world. He is the last prophet.
