College Life Essay

One of the most memorable periods of one's life is considered to be their time in college. It's completely different from life at school. It involves a number of difficulties. College Life Essay

One of the most memorable periods of a person's life is often their time in college. Compared to school life, it is completely different. We are exposed to new experiences and ideas during our time in college. Our schools were a secure environment where we had spent the majority of our time growing up. The move to college is so abrupt that you are no longer shielded by your teachers and schoolmates. Some people believe that college life entails living it up to the fullest and having a fun time. Others devote more time to their studies and take their careers seriously if they want a better future. From school life, college life is a significant adjustment.

College life will present you with numerous hurdles. You must make friends in this new environment where there are many unexpected faces. It teaches us how to interact with others and establish our own opinions. Students acquire their free will in college, which helps them grow more self-assured and collected. We were always dependent on our friends or teachers while we were in school. We learn to be independent in college. It strengthens us and teaches us how to face our own challenges. It also encourages us to take our careers seriously. We make decisions that will impact our future on our own, unlike when we were in school when our parents made those decisions for us.

The college experience for me was full of ups and downs. Even though I got admission to the college of my choice, the transition came as a complete shock to me. It was my first time travelling alone every day and meeting new people. I had a difficult time making new friends and getting familiar with the new professors. The newly found independence was exhilarating though. I could go anywhere I wanted, join any social activities, and become part of different programmes. It felt like there was nothing I couldn’t do in life.

Everyone should enjoy their time in college because it is a great and important period in their lives. We learn a lot from college life, and it also gives us more self-assurance to tackle difficulties later in life. A person should focus on other hobbies and socialise as much as they can during their college years rather than just studying because all of these things aid in a person's overall development.

There are many hurdles that come with being a college student. You're currently in a really strange environment where it would be difficult for you to mix with anyone. Students discover their strengths in college and how to persevere becoming more self-assured and composed.

My College Days Experience

Speaking of my time in college, I had a great time there and experienced some of the best days of my life. I attended Jesus and Mary College, one of Delhi University's most prestigious colleges. From there, I earned my B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science. One of Delhi University's most well-known and esteemed colleges is Gargi College. It is a stunning college with various courses in fields like science, commerce, the arts, and humanities that was constructed in a greater space. It is a girls' college with a stellar academic record.

I was quite nervous when I applied to this college because I didn't know any of the other students. However, I gradually got into college life and met some great friends. I took part in college events and enjoyed everything about my college. I joined the dance and quiz society at my college and took part in a number of dance and quiz competitions held at various Delhi University campuses.

The fact that every day is different is one of the finest aspects about college life. Along with studying, my friends and I enjoyed a variety of other activities in college. We visited different locations, witnessed unique experiences, and gained a great deal of fresh knowledge. In my undergraduate years, the canteen and the common room were special spots since we would hang out there anytime we had free time. Our garden was one of the most beautiful places in our college where we spent countless hours during wintertime. Sometimes, our professors would even take our lectures there when the weather was good.

Annual Fests were another aspect of college life that I cherished. Every year, each college at Delhi University puts on a festival that lasts two to three days. Several competitions take place at this annual festival, which attracts participants from different colleges. Our college hosts a sizable yearly festival every year, in which all of the students take part in numerous competitions and have a great time.

These events give students the chance to interact with new people and demonstrate their talents in front of everyone, boosting their confidence and assisting them in the future. I have taken part in my college's yearly festival for the past three years, and during this time, I have gained the most exposure and experience of my life. I had the time of my life in college, and I will always cherish my recollections of that time.

College life poses a lot of challenges in front of you. You are now in a place full of unfamiliar faces where you need to mingle in. It teaches us to socialize and form opinions of our own. In college, students learn their free will and they go on to become more confident and composed.

In school life, we were always dependant on our friends or teachers. College life teaches us to be independent. It makes us stronger and teaches us to fight our own battles. It also makes us serious about our careers. We make decisions that will affect our future all by ourselves, as in school life our parents did it for us.

Additionally, in schools, we viewed our teachers as our mentors and sometimes even parents. We respected them and kept a distance. However, in college life, the teacher-student relationship becomes a bit informal. They become more or less like our friends and we share our troubles and happiness with them as we did with our friends.

Essay, Paragraph or Speech on “The Pleasure of College Life” Complete Paragraph or Speech for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

The Pleasure of College Life

College life has joy, romance, beauty and attraction of its own. It is an enjoyable period. There is a world of difference between the school life and the college life. In a school, students are just like birds in a cage. They are afraid of their teachers and have no freedom of movement or liberty of speech. But in a college the students are relatively free. They have the liberty to think, feel and state their opinion. They meet professors on equal footing. The atmosphere of freedom has a healthy influence on the tough minds. Students dress themselves in the best of clothes and wander about like peacocks. A college is a nursery of fashions, particularly in dress. College life provides an opportunity to the students to develop their personality. They take part in various academic and cultural activities. They develop the capacity to organize functions and participate in them. College life develops their head and heart. It is one of the most important periods when students can develop their hidden talents. Someone has rightly said that there is no knowledge without college. It is actually the seed-time in the life of a student. It paves the way for a prosperous and healthy life in the years to come. Those who make the best of their time at college find success waiting for them. An idler or time-killer repents in his future life. So the pleasure of college life can at best be translated into a better future.

College Life and Its Pleasures

College Life and its Pleasures Essay for Students

Outlines for college life and its pleasures, student life is full of pleasures, but has its responsibilities and also worries, the greatest pleasure is to make new friends, in colleges, students can take part in the running of debating societies and sports clubs-games and sports in colleges, enjoyments of the cafeteria, pleasures of the library, the first duty of students is to study regularly, secondly, students should learn good manners, respect for their elders and love for the young.

“The activities, events, and studies in college life leave indelible (irremovable) marks on our memory.”

No doubt, student life is full of pleasures and joys. But it has its own responsibilities (duties) and also some worries (problems). First of all, a student normally depends on his parents or guardians. He does not earn for himself. Perhaps the greatest pleasure of student life is to make new friends. A student can have friends after his liking.[the_ad id=”17141″]

In a school or college, we have students’ societies and clubs to their advantage as well as disadvantage. There are debating and dramatic societies and swimming, mountaineering, boxing, and other clubs. In girls’ colleges, we also have sewing, cooking and other societies, which are suited to the students’ needs. Student members of all these society and clubs remain (keep) busy with activities that are enjoyable as well as useful.

Games and sports in schools and colleges are definitely the best of enjoyment and entertainment on earth. Who can forget the joy of playing a game on a cool summer evening or on a warm winter afternoon? Who can forget the light jokes that players make to each other during and after a game in the school or college?

Another pleasure of student life is to sit in the cafeteria and to have refreshments. Students enjoy talking over a cup of tea or a glass of cold drink. They laugh and shout and forget the passage of time in their joy. Yet another pleasure for a student is to sit in the library of his institution. There he can read newspapers, magazines and books and learn about the world.

Thus, the pleasures of student life are many, perhaps more than in any other field of social or intellectual activity. However, side by side with the pleasures, are some duties. The first duty of a student is to study regularly and to pass his examinations well.

Further, it is a student’s duty to learn good manners and to behave well towards others. An example of such behaviour is respect for elders and love and affection for the young. Student life is, thus, one of responsibility. But perhaps its pleasures are more than its duties. (Pleasures far outweigh problems and worries in school or college life.)

Anticipated Experiences During Our College Life

College Life is one of the most remarkable and lovable times of an individual's life. Unlike School Life, College Life has a different experience, and a person needs to have this experience in his/her life. College Life exposes us to whole new experiences which we always dream of experiencing after our school life. Lucky are those who get the chance to enjoy their college life, as many people don't get this chance due to their circumstances or financial issues. For every person, College Life has a different meaning. While some people spend their college life partying with friends, others become more cautious about their careers and study hard. Whatever the way, every individual enjoys their college life and always wishes to relive that time once it is over.

College Life Experience: How is it different from School Life?

Both school life and college life is the most memorable time of a person's life, but both of them are quite different from each other. While in School life, we learn everything in a protected environment, College Life exposes us to a new environment where we have to learn new things and face new challenges by ourselves. We spend half of our young lives in school, and thus we get comfortable living in that environment. But College Life is for three years only, where every year introduces new challenges and lessons to us. While in school, our teachers and friends always protect and guard us, in college life we form a relationship with our mentors, and they don't protect us all the time as our school teachers did.

Unlike school life, we don't have many limitations in college life, and it is up to us how we want to spend our college life. In college life, we see new faces and experience a unique environment in which we have to mingle ourselves. We make new friends there who stay with us for the rest of our lives. Also, we get a chance to shape our careers asking the right decisions and studying hard. College life is not only about the study but also about the overall development of an individual through various activities and challenges.

In College Life, one gets a chance to make their own decisions. In school life, students get an opportunity to be class monitors. In College Life, an individual gets a chance to nominate himself/herself for more prominent positions like College President, Vice President, Secretary, and Vice Secretary. Apart from deciding the course and stream, an individual gets a chance to build his/her confidence by being a part of various societies and events that take place all year.

Different from School Life, College Life has its importance in a person's life, and one should always enjoy his/her college life.

A Bridge Between Our Student and Adult Lives

College life is considered a bridge in our lives between our school days and our career. It prepares us with the finest academics and platform to generate dreams into realities. It acts as a transition to prepare us to be more independent. In school, we were dependent on our parents. However, we became independent in college regarding studying, traveling, decision-making, and financially independent after college. It is a valued and very smooth transition where we do not realize that we have become independent.

Some Fun Memories from College Life

Firstly, some of the most fun memories of college are “college canteen”. The canteen is supposed to be where most of the students satisfy their hunger and hang out with their friends.

Secondly, it’s the “annual fest” of the colleges. Fests always filled the student’s life with excitement and buzz. It gave new opportunities to explore, compare, compete and provide a platform to showcase their talent. It became a place where students take lots of pictures and record their experiences.

Last but not the least, it’s the college trips. One of the best things in college life is field trips where they can go out and have quality time with their friends and teacher and learning experience. Field trips or just any other college trips are filled with stories and dramas. Every student has their own story to tell about their college trips.

We should enjoy our college days as they cannot be brought back just like our school days.

The Hardest Part of College Life

As a college student, the hardest part of college life was leaving college after graduation or post-graduation. The last days of college were the hardest, knowing that soon you will be departing your friends, the campus, teachers and completely leaving behind a part of life.

My College Days Experience

Talking about my college life, I had enjoyed my college life to the fullest and had some of the best college days of my life. I was a student of one of the most reputed colleges of Delhi University and, i.e. Gargi College. I have completed my B.A. (Hons.) in Applied Psychology from there. Gargi College is one of the renowned and best colleges of Delhi University. Built in a larger area, it is a beautiful college with many courses in streams like Science, Commerce, Arts, and Humanities. With an outstanding academic record, it is a girls college.

When I took admission to this college, I was really afraid as all the people were new to me. But soon, I started enjoying my college life and made some fantastic friends. I loved everything about my college and participated in the events at my college. Even I joined the dance society of my college and participated in many dance competitions that occurred in different colleges of Delhi University.

One of the best things about college life is that you get a new experience every day. In my college life, along with studying, I and my friends enjoyed a lot of other things. We traveled to lots of places, had new experiences, and learned many new things. Our college's canteen was a remarkable place in my college life as whenever we got time, we used to chill in the canteen.

Another thing I loved about my college life is Annual Fests. Every year, every college of Delhi University organizes an annual fest that lasts for 2-3 days. In this annual fest, various competitions happen, and students from various colleges come to be a part of this annual fest. Every year, our college organizes a massive annual fest and all the students of our college participate in various events and enjoy a lot in this fest. These fests allow students to socialize with new people and showcase their talent to everyone which builds their confidence and helps them in their future. I have participated in my college's annual fest for all three years, and I have got the best exposure and experience of my life through this fest. I had the best time of my life in college, and my college life memories will always make me happy.

Life After College

One fine day, you will be silently smiling with wet eyes, looking at the pictures from your college and old friends, and remembering all the good times you had in your college days. That is the beauty of studying in a college. Despite climbing the ladders of success, you will cherish the memories of your college life.

College Life is a remarkable and essential time in a person's life, and everyone should enjoy it. College Life teaches us many things and builds our confidence to face the challenges and struggles in our future. Instead of just focussing on the study, a person must participate in other activities and socialize as much as possible in his/her college life as all these things help in the overall development of a person.

Of course, such an essay should also inform your readers about the challenges and distractions that abound in college life.

Types of College Life Essays

The tone and point of view you use in your college life essay are important.

Using the first person point of view is great for fun essays. For better connection with the reader, go for second person and third person points of view when settling on how to write your college life essay. Staying away from first person will additionally save you from being accused of blowing your own trumpet.

It is alright if you mention the name of your college in your essay. You could also mention some students and the discipline each followed. Make sure to consult the people you want to mention in your essay for their permission.

College Life Essay Fact and Fiction

College life requires you to be very self-disciplined. You meet many new people and undergo changes in your life. Have fun meeting the nerd, the philosopher and the book-worm roommates and writing about them in your college experience essay. There is a lot more freedom in college than in high school. If you do not pay attention to your class-work, you will end up failing. You could get kicked out of college when your grades become too bad. Do not let the title of your essay on college life be about how you got kicked out of college. Fiction and fact must be separated when writing your college life essay. Based on the factors of fiction or true events, there are two types of college life essays you can write.

  • Fictional college life essay
  • Non-fiction college life essay

Your non-fictional essay is great for sharing tips and ideas with fellow students. You could also throw in some advice to high school students who will soon be joining college. Go for a lighthearted tone in your college life story. It makes your essay more fun reading. If your college life essay was given as part of an assignment, your tutor will enjoy reading it.

How To Write A Essay About College Life Outline

Before you jump into writing your essay, have an outline. The outline should include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. A good outline guides you on how to write a college life essay and score high marks from it.

You will have a ton of great ideas and college life highlights to include in your essay. To make your essay informative and useful to readers, and to get good marks from it, follow the following general themes;

  • Your own positive discoveries during college life.
  • How to adapt to college life and thrive in college.
  • Pros and cons of doing something or taking a certain option.
  • How students in your college can get help for issues they may face
  • Important dos and don’ts

Obscenities and vulgar language must not appear in your college life essay. You can capture romantic engagements and relationships you have had. You however do not have to go into the details. You might have had a good time in college. You might have as well lived the ultimate life as you see it. Despite how interesting and unique it might seem to you, explicitness is not how you write a college life essay.

College Life Essay Example

College students today face many stressors. Students struggle with being away from home, adjusting to the requirements of life without their parents there to help. They struggle, as well, with the course work, which tends to be more difficult than their work at home. The most important stressor, though, is the existence of financial issues. Because students are often on their own financially for the first time ever, and because they are newly required to balance all of the requirements of adult life, it can be easy for them to simply get overwhelmed, causing anxiety and worse (Heckman). Financial issues are the most common stressors for college students, and to cure those stresses, students can take advantage of low-interest financing that will allow them to focus their attention on their studies. Financial stress has been shown to be the primary cause of stress in students. Students have two different forms of financial stress. First and most important is the immediate stress they face. How will those students pay for books? How will students afford to rent an apartment that is safe and close enough to school? Can the students afford to take part in at least some social activities in order to make college bearable and also develop the networks that will be needed to have long-term success in life? These questions are often asked, and there is not an easy answer. Students feel the brunt of the stress, and it can cause them to focus less on their studies and more on the immediate dynamics of survival. In many cases, the anxiety can be crippling, keeping students from actually going out and doing what they need to do (Beiter et al.). Financial stress can cause a withdrawal from social groups, a reduction in academic performance, and depression in students. While not all students have the same response to this kind of stress, the prevailing response is to be less effective at the things they need to accomplish when financial stress is present. Importantly, there are some solutions that students can achieve whenever they are dealing with financial stress. The solution is to get a big chunk of money at a low interest rate to allow them to focus on the things they need to do the most. The good news for students is that the government will give out student loans are relatively low rates that will allow them to cover many of the expenses they incur. While there will be a cost to this because the loans come with interest, that interest can repaid over the course of many years. It becomes worth the expense because students who get these loans are able to focus more in the classroom, allowing them to get better grades and better benefit from the academic experience (Britt). Likewise, it can lower their stress levels, allowing these students to be healthier and happier overall (Civitci). This is not an example of kicking the can down the road. Rather, it is an example of investing in their present day condition so they can actually benefit from the thing they are buying in the first place. It ensures their educational costs are not wasted costs (McKinney). Ultimately students who are facing stress must take steps to manage that stress. They must ensure that they are doing everything possible to focus on their studies and on making the most of the college experience. Taking out a loan at low-interest to finance the things they need is a good way to relieve stress. These students will then benefit because they will have more time and more energy to focus on getting good grades, developing strong relationships, and leaving college as a healthy, adjusted person heading for long-term success.

How the SAT Changed My Life

An illustration of a man lying underneath a giant SAT prep book. The book makes a tent over him. He is smiling.

By Emi Nietfeld

Ms. Nietfeld is the author of the memoir “Acceptance.”

This month, the University of Texas, Austin, joined the wave of selective schools reversing Covid-era test-optional admissions policies, once again requiring applicants to submit ACT or SAT scores.

Many colleges have embraced the test-optional rule under the assumption that it bolsters equity and diversity, since higher scores are correlated with privilege. But it turns out that these policies harmed the teenagers they were supposed to help. Many low-income and minority applicants withheld scores that could have gotten them in, wrongly assuming that their scores were too low, according to an analysis by Dartmouth. More top universities are sure to join the reversal. This is a good thing.

I was one of the disadvantaged youths who are often failed by test-optional policies, striving to get into college while in foster care and homeless. We hear a lot about the efforts of these elite schools to attract diverse student bodies and about debates around the best way to assemble a class. What these conversations overlook is the hope these tests offer students who are in difficult situations.

For many of us, standardized tests provided our one shot to prove our potential, despite the obstacles in our lives or the untidy pasts we had. We found solace in the objectivity of a hard number and a process that — unlike many things in our lives — we could control. I will always feel tenderness toward the Scantron sheets that unlocked higher education and a better life.

Growing up, I fantasized about escaping the chaos of my family for the peace of a grassy quad. Both my parents had mental health issues. My adolescence was its own mess. Over two years I took a dozen psychiatric drugs while attending four different high school programs. At 14, I was sent to a locked facility where my education consisted of work sheets and reading aloud in an on-site classroom. In a life skills class, we learned how to get our G.E.D.s. My college dreams began to seem like delusions.

Then one afternoon a staff member handed me a library copy of “Barron’s Guide to the ACT .” I leafed through the onionskin pages and felt a thunderclap of possibility. I couldn’t go to the bathroom without permission, let alone take Advanced Placement Latin or play water polo or do something else that would impress elite colleges. But I could teach myself the years of math I’d missed while switching schools and improve my life in this one specific way.

After nine months in the institution, I entered foster care. I started my sophomore year at yet another high school, only to have my foster parents shuffle my course load at midyear, when they decided Advanced Placement classes were bad for me. In part because of academic instability like this, only 3 percent to 4 percent of former foster youth get a four-year college degree.

Later I bounced between friends’ sofas and the back seat of my rusty Corolla, using my new-to-me SAT prep book as a pillow. I had no idea when I’d next shower, but I could crack open practice problems and dip into a meditative trance. For those moments, everything was still, the terror of my daily life softened by the fantasy that my efforts might land me in a dorm room of my own, with endless hot water and an extra-long twin bed.

Standardized tests allowed me to look forward, even as every other part of college applications focused on the past. The song and dance of personal statements required me to demonstrate all the obstacles I’d overcome while I was still in the middle of them. When shilling my trauma left me gutted and raw, researching answer elimination strategies was a balm. I could focus on equations and readings, like the scholar I wanted to be, rather than the desperate teenager that I was.

Test-optional policies would have confounded me, but in the 2009-10 admissions cycle, I had to submit my scores; my fellow hopefuls and I were all in this together, slogging through multiple-choice questions until our backs ached and our eyes crossed.

The hope these exams instilled in me wasn’t abstract: It manifested in hundreds of glossy brochures. After I took the PSAT in my junior year, universities that had received my score flooded me with letters urging me to apply. For once, I felt wanted. These marketing materials informed me that the top universities offered generous financial aid that would allow me to attend free. I set my sights higher, despite my guidance counselor’s lack of faith.

When I took the actual SAT, I was ashamed of my score. Had submitting it been optional, I most likely wouldn’t have done it, because I suspected my score was lower than the prep-school applicants I was up against (exactly what Dartmouth found in the analysis that led it to reinstate testing requirements). When you grow up the way I did, it’s difficult to believe that you are ever good enough.

When I got into Harvard, it felt like a miracle splitting my life into a before and after. My exam preparation paid off on campus — it was the only reason I knew geometry or grammar — and it motivated me to tackle new, difficult topics. I majored in computer science, having never written a line of code. Though a career as a software engineer seemed far-fetched, I used my SAT study strategies to prepare for technical interviews (in which you’re given one or more problems to solve) that landed me the stable, lucrative Google job that catapulted me out of financial insecurity.

I’m not the only one who feels affection for these tests. At Harvard, I met other students who saw these exams as the one door they could unlock that opened into a new future. I was lucky that the tests offered me hope all along, that I could cling to the promise that one day I could bubble in a test form and find myself transported into a better life — the one I lead today.

Emi Nietfeld is the author of the memoir “ Acceptance .” Previously, she was a software engineer at Google and Facebook.

The Death of the Pure Elective

Remember taking classes for fun my students don’t..

“Why would you ever take an entire course on trauma?”

That was the question I asked my students last year at the beginning of a semester-long, waitlisted class on the most distressing type of psychic pain. Were they aspiring psychologists or social workers? Had they themselves been traumatized? Were they searching for tools to deal with catastrophe? Or had they just been intrigued by the topic?

I braced myself for their answers and was shocked that, to a person, they all responded the exact same way:

The course fulfilled a graduation requirement.

Accordingly, I was less surprised this year when I heard the same reply from participants in a very different (also full) course I taught on the philosophy of charity: They needed it for their degree.

I’m seeing this attitude more and more at the college where I teach, Boston University: Electives as you might remember them are out. Matthew Bae, a director of academic advising at BU, says he sees not more than one or two students a semester sign up for a course merely because they’re interested. “Students taking pure electives are the exception, not the rule,” Bae said, “and I always remember them because they’re so rare they stand out.”

If students can’t figure out what the immediate use value of a course is, they won’t take it. And so far as I can tell, this utilitarian approach is directly related to the rising costs of college.

Or perhaps I should say skyrocketing costs. Because, as the Boston Globe reported  last week, four top New England universities—Tufts, Wellesley, Yale, and BU—will cost an unconscionable $90,000 a year next fall. Northeastern and MIT aren’t far behind. That means that the price tag for an undergraduate education at these institutions is about to push past a third of a million dollars .

These universities will say that such numbers are “sticker prices”—and that financial aid packages ease the burden. (Asked for comment on the price increase, a BU spokesperson made that argument to a local news outlet, adding that the average aid package at the school was $67,000 in 2023–24.) But a 2023  survey by Sallie Mae indicates that students across the country still shoulder, on average, 71 percent of costs through family contributions and loans.

The effects of this trend are manifold. Recent surveys suggest that one of these is increasing student anxiety. According to a 2022 poll, 68 percent of undergraduates say that it is a struggle for them or their families to pay for college; another indicates that a whopping 92 percent of students fear they won’t have enough money to cover tuition. No wonder stress and worry are a daily struggle  for the broad majority of college students.

And another effect, while less visible, is no less pernicious. Because 78 percent of students believe that the price is worth it anyway—but only so long as it leads to financial independence. In other words, a university education better pay.

This is the brute logic of economics, which encourages students to see each course as a product that should earn a short-term return on investment. And this same logic is keeping students from doing the most important thing college lets them do: intellectually explore.

When I graduated from university, about 25 years ago, the entire price tag for my degree was around $50,000—a shade over the cost of one semester at BU these days. That was no small sum for my firmly middle-class family, even minus the scholarship money I was able to scrape together, but it also wasn’t a backbreaking expense.

So, while I felt appropriately motivated to find a major, get a degree, and graduate, I could also afford to look around a bit. I enrolled in electives in anthropology, astronomy, and urban planning, and I did so not because I wanted to secure a return on investment—they just sounded really interesting. And they were! I still remember what I learned about ethnographic methods, the Drake equation, and buffer zones, and I’m the better for it.

It turns out that my experience wasn’t out of the norm. As Robert Elliott and Valerie Paton point out, college curricula that encourage students to follow their interests trace their origins back to the elective system put in place in the late 19 th century by Harvard President Charles W. Eliot. Eliot’s reforms encouraged freedom of inquiry and liberated students from the rigid requirements of a common core, and, Elliott and Paton argue, their influence has persisted into the modern era. To wit, former Brown Dean Katherine Bergeron notes  (citing Derek Bok) that at the turn of the 20 th century, “curricula in more than one third of America’s colleges were at least 70 percent elective.”

For 19 th -century philosopher John Stuart Mill, this kind of free exploration was one of the most important purposes of higher education. He wrote that a “mind to which the fountains of knowledge have been opened, and which has been taught, in any tolerable degree, to exercise its faculties—finds sources of inexhaustible interest in all that surrounds it, in the objects of nature, the achievements of art, the imaginations of poetry, the incidents of history, the ways of mankind past and present.”

In other words, a college experience that allows students to engage in a wide-ranging pursuit of knowledge, liberated from economic pressures, turns the world into a buffet of intellectual pleasures. And it’s one that treats the student as something more than a cog in a giant capitalist machine.

But for Mill, the capacity to appreciate that buffet is “a very tender plant, easily killed, not only by hostile influences, but by mere want of sustenance.” In jacking up tuition costs, American universities are in the process of killing that tender plant. And the costs won’t be just economic. As prices rise, elite institutions risk turning themselves into high-priced vocational schools for the professional managerial class—and shunting students away from the most valuable part of college.
