What Is Furniture Restoration?

Furniture has, of course, existed throughout history: humans have always needed a place to rest their bodies and store their things. It wasn’t until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, however, that the historical and cultural value of furniture, and, in turn, the importance of restoring and conserving it, was recognized.

The craft itself also became a means of practically understanding the processes that created the antiques we admire. A community of restorers and museums blossomed and continues to share their findings openly to ensure the authentic preservation of historical artifacts and the skills and techniques used to make them. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute lays out three main principles of furniture restoration:

• The minimization of deterioration
• The consolidation
• Repair/replacement

One of the most ambitious feats of recent restoration was the work on the chair of Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France until her death during the French Revolution in 1973, by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Marie Antoinette was known for her extravagant tastes and this piece is no exception. It was made as part of a set in 1788 for the queen’s private apartment, the Cabinet Particulier, in the Palace of Saint-Cloud near Paris, by one of the country’s greatest furniture makers, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené. It was then painted and gilded by the equally celebrated Louis-François Chatard. The two were Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette’s favoured craftsmen and restoring their work is no small task.

Pieces like this have often received countless retouches over the centuries. As research methods improve, the errors of previous efforts are revealed and adjusted.

Extensive study of one piece of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York–other pieces are also held at the Louvre and in private collections–found that the piece had originally been upholstered with hand-embroidered white fabric featuring a floral pattern. As you can see, the difference is striking.

Preservation

The process that was undertaken by the V&A Museum in light of these findings required the removal of various elements of the chair, so that they could be carefully cleaned. Dust that had been embedded over time was also carefully removed.

Consolidation

Pieces were also reset with a special diluted rabbit skin glue, which would allow the original elements to be preserved while also strengthening the structure of the chair.

Repair and replacement

The restoration project also provided the perfect opportunity to apply high tech solutions.

While the original piece was hand-carved, the tools of this century allowed restorers to cast the opposing side of a part of the cresting that had broken off the chair, scan it, copy it, reverse it, and then 3D print a replacement piece that could not be truer to the original master craftsman’s design.

The meticulous work, carried out by the V&A’s Head of Furniture Restoration Zoe Allen and her team, as well as the research conducted in New York, has not only led to the repair and restoration of this priceless piece of European history and French artistry, but has deepened our cultural and technical understanding of the work itself.

Mizoram, a northeastern hilly state of India, suffers from heavy landslides every year during monsoon season. Geologically, Mizoram has been formed in the tertiary era predominantly made of unconsolidated sandstone and shale, which are the dominant rock types in these areas. Unplanned and non-scientific urban sprawls are the triggering factors of landslides in Mizoram. Various researches have been conducted on landslide susceptibility analysis and slope instability. The present work presents a review of various such research works conducted in Mizoram to understand the overall nature of landslide's geological, geomorphological, and anthropological aspects. The review revealed that most of the landslides in Mizoram happen along the roadside and are rainfall induced. So, government policy and PWD must consider various factors like slope holding capacity, geological strength, and rainfall distribution at the time of road construction and expansion. We hope the present work will help the researchers, and planners take proper steps toward slope stability in Mizoram.

The Centre for Disaster Management under the School of Earth Sciences & Natural Resources Management started functioning on March 2021.

The Course run under the umbrella of Department of Geography & Resources Management for a time being, only two faculties are appointed for the Centre.

India is vulnerable in varying degrees to a large number of natural as well as man- made disasters such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones and landslides, etc. Natural hazards and disaster strike the country with great regularity despite the great efforts rendered for preparedness and awareness.

M.Sc. in Disaster Management & Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) programmes are developed to cater the needs of information and data through empirical studies and research. The course include basic scientific subjects as well as advanced disciplines such as Climatic Hazard Management, Geophysical Hazard Management, Disaster Management Mechanisms, Disaster Risk Reduction and Development Planning, Environmental Hazards, Hydrology, Climatology, Geomorphology, Remote Sensing & GIS, Cartographic Techniques, etc.

The Centre for Disaster Management organized four Webinars, viz. (1) Forest Fires: Risk Mitigation and Management in Mizoram, jointly organized with National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi on 12 th May 2021; (2) ‘Living and Coping with Covid-19: Psychosocial Care & Work- Life Balance’, jointly organized with Department of Psychology, Pachhunga University College & Mizoram College Teachers Association (MCTA)’ on 11 th June 2021; (3) Impacts of African Swine Fever (ASF) in India on 21 st June 2021 and, (4) Celebration of National Science Day 2022 on 1 st March 2022.

They are the most dangerous disaster to happen which causes loss of life and damage to the earth. Some of the deadliest natural disasters are earthquakes , floods, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and more.

As no country is spared from any kind of disasters, India also falls in the same category. In fact, the geographical location of India makes it a very disaster-prone country. Each year, India faces a number of disasters like floods, earthquakes, tsunami, landslides, cyclones, droughts and more. When we look at the man-made disasters, India suffered the Bhopal Gas Tragedy as well as the plague in Gujarat. To stop these incidents from happening again, we need to strengthen our disaster management techniques to prevent destructive damage.

Disaster Management

Disaster management refers to the efficient management of resources and responsibilities that will help in lessening the impact of the disaster. It involves a well-planned plan of action so we can make effective efforts to reduce the dangers caused by the disaster to a minimum.

Most importantly, one must understand that disaster management does not necessarily eliminate the threat completely but it decreases the impact of the disaster. It focuses on formulating specific plans to do so. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in India is responsible for monitoring the disasters of the country. Preparedness

Preparedness is a process that involves a social community where the trained, or the head of the community, businesses and institutions demonstrate the plan of action which is supposed to be executed during the event of a disaster. Some examples of such prevention measures are fire drills, shooter drills and evacuation rehearsals.

The response is the action taken after the disaster has occurred to retrieve some life from it. It includes short-term and long-term responses. In ideal situations, the disaster-management leader will coordinate the use of resources in the restoration process and minimize the risk of further property damage.

During this stage, the area of the calamity is cleared if it poses any further threat to human as well as environmental life. For example, evacuation of the city of Chernobyl, Ukraine, is a responsive action against a disaster.

The fifth and last stage in the process of the disaster management plan is the recovery stage. This can sometimes take years or decades to happen. The larger mass of a city is also sometimes part of the recovery from a disaster. The greatest and the most infamous example of this is the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear attacks on Japan, it took the people of those cities years and decades to recover from that man-made calamity.

It took years of effort to stabilize the area and restore essential community or individual functions. The recovery stage prioritizes the basic essential needs of human survival like food, drinkable water, utilities, transportation and healthcare over less-essential services. Eventually, this stage is all about coordinating with individuals, communities and businesses to help each other to restore a normal or a new normal, as in the case of Covid-19.

Some people have more experience than others with managing natural or man-made disasters and their prevention of them. Although this is that subject of life which should be studied and implemented by every business or community. As it is said rightly, “prevention is better than cure”, and any organization or an individual or a community can be hit by a disaster sooner or later, whether it's something as minor as a prolonged power cut or a life-threatening hurricane or an earthquake. Usually, the pandemics train us, as a social and political community, to deal with natural calamities and compel the organizations responsible for it, to build an infrastructure for its prevention.

A used piece of furniture can be a fabulous find. But years' worth of stains, scratches and cracks can dampen your enthusiasm for it. Fortunately, used furniture can be cleaned up and restored with a few inexpensive items from your local home improvement store. Though each piece of furniture has different restoration needs, it’s possible to fix up a used couch, chair, or table and have it looking almost like new, in just a few hours or days.

Restoring Wooden Furniture

• To use dish detergent, mix a healthy amount into a large bucket of water. Dip in a sponge, then lightly rub down your piece of furniture. Take care not to soak the wood, and dry it thoroughly.
• For a more aggressive approach, soak a cloth with mineral spirits so it’s wet, but not dripping. Wipe the furniture down in a well-ventilated area, taking care not to touch your mouth or eyes. Wipe off any remaining mineral spirits with a wet cloth to finish.

• Depending on these factors, you’ll want to use different refinishing methods.

• If you find that you can’t sand through the old finish to expose the original wood, you will probably need to use a chemical paint stripper instead of sanding.

• If you’re working with a large piece of furniture, apply the paint stripper to one portion of it at a time and scrape it off before applying it to another area. If you coat the entirety of a large piece of furniture, parts of it may become too dry before you get around to scraping them. [9] X Research source
• Use a metal wire brush to scrape congealed paint stripper from detailed nooks and crannies.
• When stripping fine detail work, it may also help to apply several coats of paint stripper before removing it. This will loosen the paint more effectively and make it easier to remove from hard-to-reach places.
• Make sure to use the kind of neutralizer specified on the label of your paint stripper, or it may not work.

Warnings: Make sure to use paint stripper outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. It’s a powerful, corrosive chemical, and the fumes can be very harmful if inhaled. Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask when working with paint stripper.

• Wood filler can feel raised to the touch, but don't worry. You can sand it down once it dries.

Restoring Upholstered Furniture

• The drapery also attachment works well to vacuum cushions that can't be removed.
• Use the upholstery nozzle to vacuum along piping and underneath cushions.
• Consider renting a steam cleaner if your upholstered furniture is especially dirty.

• If the cushion covers you're washing are just a few years old, you might place them in the dryer on warm. You can also line dry the covers if you're unsure about their age or quality.
• You might need to handwash antique cushion covers.
• Alternatively, clean an antique cushion cover with warm water and soap. First, place an antique cushion cover on a flat surface like a counter. Dampen a sponge and run the sponge over the surface of the textile gently to clean it. Place the cushion cover on a drying rack to dry.

• You can also buy cleaning products made specifically for upholstery. While each product has its own set of instructions, some cleaners require you to apply the product, let it sit and then use a vacuum or steam cleaner to finish cleaning the upholstery.
• Upholstered furniture attracts dust easily, so let it dry inside your living space. You might sit the furniture near a window to speed up drying, weather permitting.

Introduction to Restoring Furniture

I wrote about my restoration of this mid-nineteenth century Empire chest-of-drawers in issue #219, August 2015.

It has been my intention from the beginning of this blog to include postings about furniture restoration. By restoration I mean wood repair (including regluing), finish repair and refinishing.

For twenty years, from 1976 to 1995 I ran a one-man (me) furniture making and restoration shop. I opened the shop with the intention of just making furniture, but there weren’t enough orders to keep me busy full time, and I didn’t want to do craft shows or galleries. So I started doing restoration.

In fact, there was a refinishing shop half-a-block away with broken furniture stacked from floor to ceiling that hadn’t been fixed. As with most refinishers, the two guys running the shop didn’t have good woodworking skills, but I had them. So getting started with lots of work was easy.

Once I got started, I found it amazing how many people had some keepsake furniture in the attic or cellar that they wanted restored. I never lacked for work those twenty years.

But I was still making furniture when I got orders. After a few years I began realizing that I liked repairing furniture a lot more than making it. I would come to the shop in the morning and pick up on a repair where I had left off the day before, telling myself that I would return to making furniture after lunch. Then I wouldn’t.

I love the challenge of repairing. Not counting simple regluing, I had to figure out how to fix or reproduce someone else’s work or design. I couldn’t stay within the skill levels I had developed. I was forced to stretch and learn new techniques almost every day. Also, the emphasis was almost always on hand-tool skills, which I much prefer over machines.

So by the early 1980s I turned my intention entirely to restoration. It was hard at first to stop identifying myself as a furniture maker because there was a lot of romance around this term at that time, the height of the craft renaissance, and instead call myself a restorer/repairer/refinisher. But slowly I overcame my perceived downgrade, and everything went well from there.

Still, I didn’t find stripping furniture or refinishing furniture nearly as satisfying as the wood repair. So I turned down these jobs unless they included repair. That was where I derived my enjoyment.

Though I intend to include some postings on stripping and refinishing, along with new-wood finishing, of course, and also some thoughts on antique furniture, my main restoration emphasis will be on repair. Keep in mind that once you have removed the finish from an old piece of furniture, applying a new finish is hardly any different from finishing a new piece you have just built.

For the next few postings I will introduce you to the repair books I have found most helpful, then spend a little time on animal hide glue because it was the glue used originally and for most repairs on all furniture before the 1950s, and it is what is meant by “glue” in most of the books I’ll introduce.

By the way, I don’t find an advantage to using hide glue on new furniture, but hide glue provides a huge advantage when working on antiques and old furniture glued originally with hide glue or repaired with hide glue.

What Is Furniture Restoration and Why Is It Important?

#2. Old Finish Identification:

You should make a clear concept in your mind before antique furniture restoration. It is very important to determine the current finish on the wood. Natural finishes such as varnish, shellac, and lacquer are difficult to identify. You need to test the surface first by applying denatured alcohol.

Also, the finish comes off with the alcohol then it means it has a shellac coating. If it takes lacquer thinner to take away the finish, then it is lacquer and if nothing works then it is varnish. Other finishes can be determined by its shine.

#3. Clean Up :

If the cleaner can bring its original shine, then switch to a solution of liquid detergent and warm water. Clean the area with this solution and dry with a soft cloth. Cleaning is not an easy task and should be considered with the utmost attention.

#4. Reamalgamation :

Another way of furniture restoration the easiest way is to repair it through reamalgamation process.

In this process a solvent is used to buff out the flaws. first, we have to clean the surface and apply the solvent with a natural bristle brush. Then rub the area lightly with steel wool in one direction along the grain of the wood.

#5. Stripping :

The initial step of old furniture restoration includes stripping away of the old finish. Apply the stripper from top to bottom in one direction.

Then wait for five to twenty minutes and then start scraping the surface with a stripping tool or knife. After this use a liquid stripper with a brass bristle brush to remove the finish from the corners.

#6. Refinishing :

Now apply a new coat of finish and stain to your wooden piece. Before doing this sand, the wooden piece and clean the surface with a tack cloth.

Then by using a natural bristle brush apply the stain. You now will have a beautiful end product and the furniture will be as good as new.
