Through the use of reflective practice this essay identifies strategies to overcome challenges in regard to safe medication management, as I transition in to practice as a Graduate Nurse (GN). Strategies are discussed in association with governance and regulatory frameworks that encompass nursing as a self-regulated profession and are linked to the mutual experiences of other GN’s. Examples from personal experience placement (PEP) and relevant literature will provide supporting evidence to the success of the discussed strategies.  Initially identifying challenges associated with safe medication management begins as a first year University student (Levett-Jones & Brourgeois 2011). Being fearful of changing situations as that of transition to practice and safe medication management is a normal human reaction amongst GN’s (Edwards et al 2015); (Spence Laschinger et al 2015). Safe medication management is the ultimate goal for all health care professionals (Lim & Honey 2015) and embraces standard four; Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC), Medication Safety of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service Standards (NSQHSS) (ACSQHC 2012). 

The Australian Commission and Quality in Health Care designed ten set standards to provide a uniform set of measures of safety and quality for health care services (ACSQHC 2012). The ten standards are derived from evidence based improvement strategies (ACSQHC 2012). With an aim to protect the public from harm while improving the quality and delivery of health services (ACSQHC 2012). Utilising a framework such as NSQHSS by which to measure my own performance allows for self-governance (Chang & Daley 2012). Through maintaining and enhancing evidence base practice which underpins my nursing as a profession (Chang & Daley 2012).   During my final placement at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) Acute Medical Unit (AMU) the following challenges were identified.  Above all else I fear being the GN that makes a preventable medication administration error. Medication errors associated with GN are linked with a lack of clinical experience and is noted to be a challenge of significant concern (Unver et al. 2012); (Saintings et al.). As inexperienced practitioners GN’s display a lack of confidence and competence in regard to the ability to think critically and work independently (Ostini & Bonner 2012); (Sahay et al. 2015). Therefore this could result in patient harm, leading to disciplinary action and de registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) (Atkins Britton & de Lacey 2011). Unsupervised medication delivery is also considered a significant challenge. As GN’s often have feelings of inadequacy and lack self-confidence surrounding unsupervised delivery of medications (Mellor & Gregoric 2016); (Edwards et al.2015). As a nursing student I have been directly supervised by a preceptor and practice under their nursing registration (NAMBA 2016). The preceptor is legally accountable for my administration of medications as a beginning level practitioner (NAMBA 2016). As a GN I will be independent and left to my own devices(NAMBA 2016). This is noted to lead to feelings of social isolation and disadvantage (Mellor & Gregoric 2016). Leading to heightened level of stress and anxiety associated with the delivery of safe medication management amongst GN’s (Mellor & Gregoric 2016).  A lack of pharmaceutical knowledge is also identified as a challenge to GN’s (Saintings et al.). University provides GN’s with a base knowledge of pharmaceuticals on which to build upon (Lim & Honey 2014). The ability to link diagnosis with disease aetiology and medical intervention as a GN requires a sound evidence base (Lim & Honey 2015). Evidence based practice underpins nursing as a profession and for GN’s is built over time (Levett-Jones &Brourgeois 2011); (Chang & Daley 2012). Through the PEP experiences GN’s can endeavour to link clinical encounter with clinical experience, therefore building an evidence base (Levett-Jones &Brourgeois 2011); (Chang & Daley 2012).  As I have matured and grown throughout my personal experience placements (PEP) so has my abilities and skill to reason; think, collect, interpret and infer and implement actions that foster safe medication management (Levett-Jones & Brourgeois 2011). I use reflection as a tool to provide insight and judgement on my own clinical performance to link and build my own evidence-based practice (Wiles et al. 2013).  There is a key relationship between the years of clinical experience, clinical decision making and safe medication management (Saintsing et al. 2011). There is an established link providing evidence that GN’s are prone to medication errors due to a lack of clinical experience (Unver et al. 2015). Critical thinking through the use of clinical reasoning is a major concept taught to undergraduate nurses at University (Levett-Jones 2013). Through the use of clinical reasoning I build upon my own competence and confidence as a strategy for error free medication management (Saintsing et al. 2011); (Wiles et al. 2013).  Building a sound knowledge base surrounding pharmacology allows for a GN to question prescribers and potentially avoid any medication errors (Lim & Honey 2014) Therefore correlating to the Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia value statement five; Nurses value informed decision making (NAMBA 2008). It also embraces clinical-governance through safe service delivery and links with the Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses (CPCN); conduct statement ten; Nurses practice nursing reflectively and ethically (NAMBA 2016).  As a GN adherence to policies and procedure protocols on the PEP is a strategy vital to safe medication management (Armitage et al. 2007); (THO-North 2016). Knowing the location of policies and procedures and also having the pass words to electronic resources is valuable in the delivery of safe medication management (Armitage et al. 2007); (THO-North 2016). Seeking clarification of unknown medications from the on line monthly index of medical specialties (MIMS) is also a strategy to advances my medication knowledge (MIMS 2015).  MIMS provides detailed descriptions on actions, contraindications and side effects of medications (MIMS 2015).  It also shows I seek clarification on the unknown through self-directed learning to improve my evidence based practice (Chang & Daly 2012). The use of technology is reported to reduce the incidences of medication errors and evokes self-governance through education and professional development (Saintsing et al. 2011). Correctly identifying Pt’s by arm or leg band (Kelly et al. 2011) during clinical hand over is also a strategy to provide effective medication management (Edwards et al. 2015). Checking medication charts reveals any discrepancies in unsigned, non-administered, commenced or ceased medications (Kozier & Erb 2015). While embracing both NSQHSS standards five and six; Patient Identification and Procedure Matching and Clinical Handover (ACSQHC 2012). 

Checking patient identification against procedures encompasses the rights of medication administration (ACSQHC 2012); (Elliot & Liu 2010). Employing this strategy ensures health care consumer safety during the delivery of medications and is noted to reduce medication errors (ACSQHC 2012); (Elliot & Liu 2010).  The rights of medication include; right patient, right dose, right drug, right time and right route (Harkanen et al.). Adherence to the rights of medication management is a proven strategy to provide a step by step checking process to reduce medication errors at separate intervals, during the process of medication delivery (Harkanen et al.) This also evokes clinical-governance through continuous monitoring of quality and safety to ensure health care risks are minimized (ACSQHC 2012).   Questioning one’s peers during clinical handover can often seem like a daunting task as a GN (Chang & Daly 2012). However seeking initial clarification of unsigned for medications from the RN conducting hand over, embodies clinical-governance through continuity of person centred care across the continuum (Daley, Speedy & Jackson 2011).  Furthermore as a GN delivering clinical handover to another RN with ISBAR as I have been doing on PEP in AMU embrace and promotes clinical-governance (Braine 2006); (Chang & Daley 2012). This is exhibited through the transfer of care, responsibility and accountability of a Pt on either a temporary or permanent basis to another member of the health care team (ACSQHC 2012).   Planning and prioritising embodies shared-governance and is a vital key strategy in safe medication management (Unver et al. 2012). As a GN I need to prioritise my Pt’s and this is best done with a shift plan (Kozier & Erb 2015); (THO-North 2016), with a view of working smarter not harder (Belvins 2016). Therefore to achieve this goal I chose delegation for the administration of S4 and S8 medications to remain within my scope of practice (NAMBA 2016). Delegation reinforces shared-governance through team work, promoting safe effective medication management and client safety (Belvins 2016). Application for a transition to practice program is not mandatory (Edwards et al. 2015). However they are proven to increase both job satisfaction and retention rates of GN’s (Missen et al. 2014). Successful application would provide myself with support and further education through shared-governance (Ott & Ross 2014). With continual education and learning from experienced RN’s noted to be an effective strategy for preventing medication errors (Unver et al. 2012). With supportive environments through preceptorship, guidance and skill development noted to promote autonomy and empowerment of the GN through their transition to practice (Parker et al. 2014); (Kramer et al 2013). A transition to practice program is also proven to elevate stress and anxiety, associated with burnout and dropout rates in GN’s (Missen et al. 2014). Hence more GN’s continue nursing as a chosen career pathway (Missen et al. 2014).    As nurses we practice under statutory and self-regulation (Atkins, Britton & DeLacey 2011). The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NAMBA 2016) regulates nurses and mid wives under the Health Practitioners Regulation National Law this is statutory regulation (NAMBA 2016). Statutory regulation depicts aspects of my professional practice that are set in legislation (Atkins, Britton & DeLacey 2011).  These include title protection as a Registered Nurse, registration requirements and competence standards to enter practice (NAMBA 2016). Therefore successful registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (ARPRA) would be evidence I have achieved a set standard for safe medication delivery and embrace the CPCN conduct statement one; Nurses practice and conduct themselves in accordance with laws relevant to the profession and practice of nursing (NAMBA 2016). Successful application also incorporates the notion of shared-governance and social contract in alliance with NSQHSS standard two; Partnering with Consumers (ACSQHC 2012).  Self-regulation is my ability to adhere to the standards of practice as set out by the nursing profession its self (NAMBA 2016). This coincides with conduct statement two of the CPCN; Nurses practice in accordance with the standards of the profession and broader health system (NAMBA 2016). Both regulations described also encompass standard one; Governance and quality of service organisations (ACSQHC 2012).  In conclusion a variety of strategies have been considered to overcome the identified challenges of medication management during the transition to practice as a GN. Evidence to support the strategies, as successful coping mechanisms is provided from the research literature. The evidence shows that all GN’s have similar fears surrounding the transition to practice involving safe medication management. If you’re writing an opinion piece on something you already have some knowledge about, you may not have to do any research at all. It may just be a matter of organizing your existing thoughts into a coherent essay. If you need to find out about a topic before you begin to write, you can easily get information on certain topics, whilst others will be more obscure and therefore more difficult to research. Clearly, the easier it is to find information, the faster you can write.

How good are your reading comprehension skills?

Some of us can just skim a piece and pick up all the salient points. Others will have to read with more attention, and even re-read a piece several times to extract the information we need. Having good reading and comprehension skills makes writing much faster since you’re able to “get” the facts faster and organize them better. Now you know why you had to do so many reading comprehension tests at school.

How well did you plan?

Throwing yourself headlong at a 1,000-word essay and writing till you reach the word count may seem like the easy option, but it isn’t. Planning your essay so that it begins with an introduction, highlights the most important points you want to make and then wraps everything up into a conclusion actually saves you time. Sometimes, essay instructions will tell you how to structure the piece, so read them carefully and extract any information you can use to guide your essay’s structure.

Have you ever gotten lost halfway through a sentence? You know what you wanted to say, but halfway through, the thought slips away from you. The faster you can type , the more easily you can capture thoughts before your mind moves onto the next thing and you forget what you were trying to say. Typing skills are essential in the modern world. Consider using typing games to improve your speed.

How long does it take me to write a 1,000-word essay?

Faster isn’t always better. The more in-depth your report is meant to be, the longer you should spend on it. I can usually research and write a fairly technical magazine article of 1,000 words in three hours, but do remember that I’m a professional writer. I’m fast because I write all day, every day.

The longest I’ve ever spent on a 1,000-word article was 12 hours. It was absolutely brutal! The information I needed to gather was very technical, hard to find, and even more difficult to understand, and you can’t write something until you really understand the subject matter. I also had to contact experts for their opinions, but I couldn’t even ask about their opinions until I could target them with the right questions. As a result, I actually had to write most of the article before slotting in the expert comment.

The quickest I’ve ever written a 1,000-word article is one hour. In this case, I already knew the subject matter well and didn’t have to back up every fact in the essay with references.

Reviewing your work also matters

If you’re writing for grades and want a good one, you need a really good essay. Don’t start writing it the day before you have to hand it in. Try and get your first draft down at least a day or two before you have to submit your work. Then return to it and do your editing. Read your essay aloud to yourself, since this will help you pick up any careless errors you wouldn’t otherwise spot. Check to see if your information flows logically from one point to the next and make sure that you’ve presented your information clearly.

Remember, teachers get tired. They have to read the same kind of essay over and over again when they grade. If they struggle to understand what you’re saying, you might not get as good a grade as you would if you stuck to using short sentences and relatively simple language.

Your reviewing process shouldn’t take all that long. If you don’t have to make a lot of changes, you should be able to do your final edit in under half an hour.

Take your time. Whatever you do, don’t rush. You might want your essay to be written quickly, but if it’s an important essay, taking your time will give you a better finished product. Budget your time conservatively. It’s better to find that you’ve still got time left over than to run out of time and end up dashing things off with a looming deadline.

This isn’t accurate. I wrote my 1000 word essay in an hour, not three hours. You should change the times you have listed to reflect how long it actually takes to write. Obviously you don’t know since the mes you listed are not the same as what I can do!

Did you even read the article? The writer says that it’s based on what she writes and is just a general approximation. How long it takes you or anybody else to write an essay will obviously be different because you’re not the same as everybody else. Nobody writes at the same speed so how long it takes you to write an essay will be different for every person.

But research is part of the writing process. If a person writes a book, they don’t only count the time it took them at the typewriter writing. They count all the time it took to research the book as well. Trying to separate the two doesn’t make sense.

I think an important thing to point out here is that there’s a huge difference between writing a 1000 word essay and writing a good 1000 word essay. You can write an essay in hardly any time at all if you don’t do the proper research and don’t spend time editing what you wrote. If you’re going to write a good essay, it’s going to take more time. You should always give yourself more time than you think you’re going to need to get it done.

This applies to all writing. Writing and writing something something well will have a huge time discrepancy even if both writings are the same length. Just because you are able to finish something quickly doesn’t mean that’s the best way to do it.

In my opinion, hours that are presented here a partially true. It may take about an hor to write 300 word essay but editing also takes some time. So on averege, I count the time to write the piece itself + time edit everything.

Research, first draft writing, editing, and rewriting are all part of the writing process. I think the time it takes to do all of them should be counted in the time it takes.

It takes way too long! Teachers should not be allowed to assign essays more than 250 words. They always complain they don’t have enough time and work too hard. It’s only because they make their students do too much work!!

This comment just makes you look lazy. 250 words is nothing. Any topic that needs to be explored will take many more words than this. If you don’t want to write, just admit it and don’t try to project that on others.

If you do your research, use annotations for resources and understand to whom and what you have to transfer than the fewer words the better. Remember that you are demonstrating deep knowledge of the topic by making it accessible to the audience without them doing the research. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

Contrary to what academia self-righteously preach, its imperative for any writing and explanation of thought to be simplified. If you cant explain it in short time/short essay you don’t understand it enough.

It should take long enough that you get all the points you want across in the writing, but not too long as to bore the reader. Writing should be engaging, not boring.

Nice philosophy, but completely unhelpful if you have a paper due tomorrow and limited amount of time to write. The real world doesn’t work that way.

If someone has an essay due tomorrow and they waste time reading this, then they are a bit of an idiot for giving themselves even less time to work with. If they’re leaving work to the last minute like that, then the only thing they should be doing is jumping right in and writing (or planning the essay, but that should be done much sooner).

This is so arbitrary and will depend on the individual. It’s like asking the question, “how long does it take to write a book?” For some, it will only take a couple of months while for others it will take a lifetime. it also depends on the type of writing you’re doing. Some writing is easy and quick and other writing is difficult and requires huge amounts of research.

I completely agree with you on that one. I recently worked on a 4000 word essay, and while the research did take me three hours to conduct, I completed the essay itself in a bit less than four hours and scored a total of 32/34 points.

How the Special Counsel’s Portrayal of Biden’s Memory Compares With the Transcript

The special counsel, Robert K. Hur, accused the president last month of “significant” memory problems. The interview transcript offers context to his report.

A transcript of a special counsel’s hourslong interview of President Biden over his handling of classified files shows that on several occasions the president fumbled with dates and the sequence of events, while otherwise appearing clearheaded.

A lightly redacted copy of the transcript, which is more than 250 pages and was reviewed by The New York Times, was sent to Congress hours before the special counsel, Robert K. Hur , testified on Tuesday in front of the House Judiciary Committee. Democrats on the panel later released the document .

In a report released last month, Mr. Hur concluded that there was insufficient evidence to charge Mr. Biden with a crime after classified documents ended up in an office he used after his vice presidency and in his home in Delaware. But the report also portrayed Mr. Biden, 81, as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” touching off a political furor amid his re-election campaign.

Mr. Biden’s lawyers, who were present for five hours of questioning over two days, have challenged the damaging portrait by Mr. Hur , a former Trump administration official. But the transcript had not been publicly available to evaluate Mr. Hur’s assessment that Mr. Biden’s memory has “significant limitations.”

Here are some highlights:

Mr. Biden repeatedly said he did not recall or know certain details.

In trying to determine whether Mr. Biden had willfully retained certain classified documents, Mr. Hur repeatedly pressed him for details, like where and how his staff stored classified documents, who packed up when his vice presidency ended and where particular files had gone.

Mr. Biden, who has denied wrongdoing, repeatedly demurred, saying he did not recall or had no idea how his staff handled such matters, and observing that there was “a continuum of a lot of these people” who assisted with those tasks.

He also said he did not recall seeing the most sensitive files investigators found — concerning the Afghanistan war that were in a tattered cardboard box in his garage in Delaware, along with a jumble of unrelated materials — and did not know how they got there.

“I don’t remember how a beat-up box got in the garage,” he said, speculating that someone packing up must have just tossed stuff into it. He added that he had “no goddamn idea” what was in a tranche of files shipped to his house and “didn’t even bother to go through them.”

Mr. Biden particularly fumbled with dates when talking about his son’s death.

Mr. Hur’s most striking assertion about Mr. Biden’s memory was that he “did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died.” The death of his son from cancer, in May 2015, was one of the most emotional moments in Mr. Biden’s personal life — and the subject of a memoir he wrote with a ghostwriter in 2017.

Mr. Biden expressed particular outrage about that line. “How in the hell dare he raise that?” the president said during a news conference held hours after Mr. Hur’s report became public. “Frankly, when I was asked the question I thought to myself, it wasn’t any of their damn business.”

The transcript shows that Mr. Hur did not specifically ask when Beau Biden had died. Instead, Mr. Hur pressed Mr. Biden about where he kept papers related to work he did after leaving the vice presidency in January 2017, like teaching at a think tank in Washington, a cancer “moonshot” project and the book he wrote about Beau’s death.

At that point, Mr. Biden, who sometimes stutters, began to stammer and garble matters. He said “when I got out of the Senate” when he meant to refer to leaving the vice presidency, and he seemingly conflated events in 2015, when Beau died and Mr. Biden chose not to run against Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, with events in 2017, when he wrote the memoir and decided to run for president in the 2020 cycle:

BIDEN: Well, um … I, I, I, I, I don’t know. This is, what, 2017, 2018, that area? HUR: Yes, sir. BIDEN: Remember, in this time frame, my son is — either been deployed or is dying, and, and so it was — and by the way, there were still a lot of people at the time when I got out of the Senate that were encouraging me to run in this period, except the president. I’m not — and not a mean thing to say. He just thought that she had a better shot of winning the presidency than I did. And so I hadn’t, I hadn’t, at this point — even though I’m at Penn, I hadn’t walked away from the idea that I may run for office again. But if I ran again, I’d be running for president. And, and so what was happening, though — what month did Beau die? Oh, God, May 30 — RACHEL COTTON, A WHITE HOUSE LAWYER: 2015. UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: 2015. BIDEN: Was it 2015 he had died? UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: It was May of 2015. BIDEN: It was 2015. ROBERT BAUER, BIDEN’S PERSONAL LAWYER: Or — I’m not sure of the month, sir, but I think that was the year. MARC KRICKBAUM, HUR’S DEPUTY: That’s right, Mr. President. It — BIDEN: And what’s happened in the meantime is that as — and Trump gets elected in November of 2017? UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: 2016. UNIDENTIFIED MALE SPEAKER: ’16. BIDEN: ’16, 2016. All right. So — why do I have 2017 here? ED SISKEL, BIDEN’S WHITE HOUSE COUNSEL: That’s when you left office, January of 2017. BIDEN: Yeah, OK. But that’s when Trump gets sworn in, January. SISKEL: Right. BAUER: Right, correct. BIDEN: OK, yeah. And in 2017, Beau had passed and — this is personal …

Mr. Biden then recounted Beau’s death; how he came to write the subsequent book “Promise Me, Dad,” based on his son’s dying request that he stay involved in public service; and how he decided in 2017, after a rally by white nationalists in Charlottesville, Va., to run for president against Donald J. Trump.

Mr. Biden had several other miscues.

The transcript also contained some minor seeming slips that went unmentioned in Mr. Hur’s report. For example, Mr. Biden needed to be nudged to recall the name of the federal agency that takes custody of official records — the National Archives — or that fax machine is the name of the device that transmits images of documents over phone lines.

But Mr. Hur made a particularly striking assertion in stating that Mr. Biden “did not remember when he was vice president.” As evidence, Mr. Hur quoted him as saying, “If it was 2013 — when did I stop being vice president?” According to the report, Mr. Biden displayed similar confusion on the second day of questioning, asking, “In 2009, am I still vice president?”

The transcript provides context for those lines. In both instances, Mr. Biden said the wrong year but appeared to recognize that he had misspoken and immediately stopped to seek clarity and orient himself.

The first unfolded as Mr. Biden stressed that he did not know how material about an internal Obama administration debate in 2009 about the Afghanistan war had ended up in his Delaware garage:

BIDEN: Somebody must’ve, packing this up, just picked up all the stuff and put it in a box, because I didn’t. HUR: OK. Do you have any idea where this material would’ve been before it got moved into the garage? BIDEN: Well, if it was 2013 — when did I stop being vice president? COTTON: 2017. BIDEN: So I was vice president. So it must’ve come from vice-president stuff. That’s all I can think of.

The second happened when Mr. Biden was asked about how a particular folder of those same documents ended up in his garage. Again discussing the end of his vice presidency in 2017, he mistakenly instead invoked the year the documents were from:

BIDEN: My problem was I never knew where any of the documents or boxes were specifically coming from or who packed them. Just did I get them delivered to me. And so this is — I’m, at this stage, in 2009, am I still vice president? [indiscernible whispering] BIDEN: Yeah, OK.

Mr. Krickbaum then said he saw that Mr. Biden was “flipping ahead” and the conversation moved on.

Mr. Hur was selective in portraying Mr. Biden’s memory of an ambassador’s position.

In portraying the president’s memory as unusually faulty, Mr. Hur singled out one other issue: whether Mr. Biden accurately remembered the stance of a diplomat in Afghanistan. According to the report, Mr. Biden, in discussing a memo he wrote to President Barack Obama in 2009 arguing against a surge of additional troops to Afghanistan, had mistakenly said he “had a real difference” of opinion with Karl Eikenberry, who was the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. In fact, Mr. Hur noted, Mr. Eikenberry, like Mr. Biden, had opposed a surge.

That line came when Mr. Biden interrupted himself during a lengthy recollection of the internal administration debate over whether Mr. Obama should order a surge:

BIDEN: I’ll just tell you one thing, it has nothing to do with the investigation, you’ll understand why this is sensitive. The president thought that I knew a lot more about Afghanistan than he did and other members of the administration. He knew I had a real difference with the key foreign policy types, particularly — whether it was Eikenberry or whether it was — anyway. And he was looking for me to make my case as strong as I could, without him having to ask for it or being associated with it, because his concern in this period was he didn’t have overwhelming foreign policy experience, and how could he take on the most premier members of the foreign policy establishment in his administration. Quite a few that said, go, do this. So he was looking for me to make the strongest case I could. So I’d be the guy that’d basically take the heat, which I was prepared to do because I knew as much about it as they did.

Notably, later that same day, Mr. Biden invoked Mr. Eikenberry again. In that passage, Mr. Biden made clear that he recalled that Mr. Eikenberry shared his opposition to sending additional troops to Afghanistan. Mr. Biden was discussing a typed file he may or may not have seen before writing his 2009 memo to Mr. Obama.

BIDEN: I received this before I wrote the other, it was added argument why he should listen to my argument. I’m talking about — you know, “I had a long conversation with Eikenberry, yes, I urge you to call him before you make a decision. Karl can speak for himself and he has eloquently in some of his cables, let me relay just a few things. Adding troops will not speed up the ability to train Afghans because…” etc. So these are criticisms of the proposal that was being made to the president by, by others in the administration wanting him to double down in Afghanistan.

In his report, Mr. Hur did not mention this second discussion of Mr. Eikenberry’s position.

Mr. Biden appeared clearheaded most of the time.

Mr. Biden went into great detail about many matters, the transcript shows. He made jokes over the two days, teasing the prosecutors. And at certain points, he corrected his interrogators when they were the ones who misspoke.

When Mr. Hur showed him a photograph and suggested that two documents resembled each other, Mr. Biden objected to the comparison. When Mr. Krickbaum misquoted Mr. Biden as having told his ghostwriter that he had found material “marked” classified, Mr. Biden interrupted to question his inaccurate addition of that word.

Mr. Biden also critically evaluated Mr. Hur’s strategy. At the end of the first day of questioning, he told his lawyers, “They’re obviously trying to establish something.”

On the second day, when Mr. Krickbaum insinuated that Mr. Biden had improperly held onto personal diaries from his vice presidency in which he had recorded accounts of sensitive meetings, Mr. Biden forcefully stressed, “Every president before me has done the same exact thing.” He added, “I just want to make sure we’re on the same page.”

When Mr. Hur suggested that classified files found in Mr. Biden’s garage may have once been stored in a desk in his house that contained similar-looking folders, Mr. Biden questioned that premise. He argued that it was more likely that both sets were originally shipped to the garage, and someone — not him — had just found the one set and so put it in his desk.

And when Mr. Biden provided a lengthy description of the layout of his house in Delaware — portions of which were redacted in the transcript for security reasons — Mr. Hur observed that Mr. Biden appeared to have “a photographic understanding and, and recall of the house.”
