9 Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers (2024)

Read our guide to discover the best grammar checker for research papers and academic documents and what you can expect from these tools.

A friend of mine in college pulled an all-nighter to finish writing her dissertation and submit it on time. Afterwards, she was upset. She spent hours laboring over the final draft and later discovered a glaring typo on page one. That typo lowered her grade.

I remember how upset she was when I started writing a thesis for my post-graduate degree years later. It was one of the most challenging writing projects I have ever embarked on. I spent almost two years on it. My thesis underwent multiple revisions, and I enlisted the help of a friend to check it for grammar errors and mistakes.

At A Glance: Our Top 2 Picks For Grammar Checker For Research Papers

  • Best Grammar Checker: Grammarly
  • Also Great: ProWritingAid

Thankfully, these days it’s easier to scan a research paper for grammar mistakes using spell checkers and grammar checkers. They can act like a line of defense before submission and should help you achieve error-free writing. These tools can even save time with those painful citations. In this round-up, I profile the best grammar checkers for research papers and what you can expect from them.

1. Grammarly

2. prowritingaid, 3. antidote, 4. quillbot, 6. paperrater, 7. correctenglish (ce), 8. hemingway editor, 9. citation machine, why you can trust me, selection criteria, best grammar checker for papers: the final word, how can i check my paper for grammar.

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: Grammarly

Grammarly is an excellent all-around grammar checker and is especially suited for academic use. It works across platforms and devices; this includes Windows and Mac IOS, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. In addition, grammar-checking software uses an artificial intelligence writing assistant to instantaneously review and fix grammar, syntax, and spelling errors.

If you are grammar-checking a paper over several thousand words, remember to paste in sections rather than upload it all at once. Grammarly provides suggestions until your piece is error-free, meaning you can improve your writing skills as you go.

Research paper writers regularly use complex terminology and scientific terms. For this reason, a research paper writer will get the best value from Grammarly Premium. The premium version enables users to create a custom style guide and add snippets to build a personal library of terms for their papers. The premium version also includes a plagiarism checker.

Academics can scan their work for issues of accidental plagiarism . However, Grammarly only checks papers against articles freely available online. In other words, don’t expect it to compare a document against a gated research paper. Grammarly also offers discounts for students and educational institutions.

In the below video, I cover how you can generate citations quickly and easily for MLA, Chicago Manual of Style and APA using Grammarly. To learn more, read our Grammarly review.

YouTube video

  • Fast and easy to use
  • Accurate, insightful reports
  • Best-in-glass grammar and plagiarism checker
  • Works on most popular devices
  • Includes custom dictionaries
  • The price is expensive
  • No citation manager

Pricing: $70 per year

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid is a popular alternative to Grammarly that works on almost many devices.

It is ideal for long-form grammar checking and includes dozens of good writing and proofreading reports. These are designed to catch common grammar mistakes and other issues. Others relate to questions of writing style and the overall sentence structure of a research paper.

I particularly like its reports for addressing the readability of a piece of writing and word choice. A research paper writer can use this report to edit a document depending on their intended audience. If you write research papers in Scrivener , it can also work directly with these files.

ProWritingAid suffers from the same weaknesses as Grammarly for research paper writers. For example, it lacks a citation manager, and the plagiarism checker isn’t ideal for academics. In addition, mobile support lags behind Grammarly, although no severe research paper writers rely on a mobile. To learn more, read our ProWritingAid review.

  • Excellent proofreading reports
  • Affordable pricing schemes
  • Supports long-form documents
  • The volume of reports may overwhelm new users
  • The free version limited to 500 words

Pricing: From $59.95 per year

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: Antidote

Antidote is ideal for proofreading without internet access. Although less popular than Grammarly, Antidote was first released over 25 years and is actively developed. Research paper writers can choose from three versions: Antidote web, Antidote mobile, and Antidote 11. The web version operates via a browser like Chrome or Safari, while the mobile version works on iOS devices. It supports the English language and French. However, it lacks the same number of browser extensions as Grammarly.

Research paper writers with strict guidelines about what apps they can use will like Antidote 11. It installs onto their computer, and unlike an online tool, it scans and identifies grammar mistakes and issues locally rather than sending a research paper to the cloud. As such, it’s a good choice for academics concerned about online algorithms, privacy, and data security. Antidote offers custom dictionaries so that research paper writers can add various terms. It also provides a version for schools. However, don’t expect a citation manager.

  • Excellent grammar reports
  • It supports English and French
  • Offers a version for schools
  • No plagiarism checker
  • Requires some configuration

Pricing: $19.95 per month

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: Quillbot

Quillbot was released in 2017 and today claims over 50 million users. Quillbot is an excellent academic proofreader. How it presents errors and the breadth of its reports doesn’t compete with Grammarly. However, in our tests, Quillbot fixed more spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and writing issues than inbuilt software in a basic word processor.

Academic paper writers will love the citation generator. This generator automatically formats any link, document, or reference based on a research writer’s preferred academic style and generates the correct citation. Users can build out a library of citations for their reports too. This citation manager should save research writers hours checking and formatting their bibliography and references.

Quillbot customers can use other premium tools for effective academic writing. The paraphrasing feature is helpful if you find this aspect of research writing a chore and need help with abstracts and summaries. To learn more, read our Quillbot review.

  • Many valuable tools beyond proofreading
  • Easy to use
  • Excellent citation generation
  • Reports lag behind competitors
  • The AI is not as powerful as Grammarly

Pricing: Free trial/$10 per month

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: Chegg

Chegg is a grammar checker aimed at students. It scans an essay for accidental plagiarism, identifies grammar mistakes, and fixes readability issues. It also handles citations, a feature a lot of tools lack. It’s a good, affordable essay checker if you don’t like Grammarly or ProWritingAid.

I found Chegg helpful but preferred Quillbot because of its extra features for a similar price. Chegg also offers a similar service called Easy Bib , which includes a citation manager. In addition, it syncs with Google Drive. To learn more, read our Grammarly vs. Chegg comparison .

  • Includes a citation manager
  • Simple to use
  • No mobile app
  • Fewer plugins and desktop apps than competitors

Use for: checking essays and college submissions Pricing: $7.95 per month

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: PaperRater

PaperRater is a grammar-checking software aimed at students. PaperRater is an excellent academic essay proofreader, founded in 2009, and is owned by Barnes and Noble Education. PaperRater claims to rely on artificial intelligence to check for spelling mistakes and plagiarism issues. Users can check an academic paper based on an intended education or reading level.

In testing, PaperRater missed mistakes and other issues Grammarly caught. Don’t expect the same breadth of proofreading reports, collaboration features, or citation manager. Although it’s affordable To learn more, read our Paperrater vs. Grammarly comparison.

  • Free plagiarism checker
  • The Premium version is affordable
  • The user interface has some quirks

Pricing: $24 per month

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: CorrectEnglish

Correct English is a grammar checker aimed squarely at the academic market. Correct English is a good proofreading tool for academics and essayists. We uploaded work from Google Docs and Microsoft Word in our tests and copied and pasted pieces.

Academics will love that it supports various writing style guides, including APA and MLA. You can apply these with a click when checking a paper inside the web app. We’ve yet to find another proofreading tool with a similar feature.

Research paper writers can try the free version and check up to 250 words. The premium version also includes a plagiarism check and access to Lexipedia. Use the latter to look up definitions, synonyms, and antonyms.

  • Apply academic style guides at a click
  • Supports nine languages
  • Insightful writing stats
  • Little in the way of plugins and apps for browsers
  • No mobile version
  • Clunky user-interface

Pricing: Free/$19.99

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: Hemingway Editor

Hemingway App is not a typical grammar checker. Hemingway App can help fix readability issues in research papers; however, it’s still a good tool for research paper writers concerned with readability. You can copy and paste work into the app or upload a Microsoft Word document, text, HTML, or Markdown file.

It helps a writer improve sentence structure and writing style. It also finds instances of weak writing and overused adverbs and adjectives. It’s great for avoiding wordy writing and improving the general readability of a paper.

However, Hemingway Editor isn’t a classic grammar checker. It doesn’t spot or fix spelling and grammar or classic punctuation errors. It also doesn’t generate reports or a citation manager; you can’t use it with Google Chrome or browsers via a plugin. That said, it’s free. You can buy a version that works locally, without internet access. To learn more, read our Hemingway App review.

  • Great for line edits
  • Doesn’t fix grammar errors directly

Best Grammar Checker for Research Papers: Citation machine

Citation Machine is free to use for generating citations. It’s ideal for generating sources quickly and easily. We’ve included it on this list as a research paper writer could try this tool in conjunction with a premium grammar checker that lacks a citation manager. Generate correctly formatted citations with Citation Machine and use a grammar-checking tool to fix other issues. The premium version costs $9.95 per month and includes a plagiarism checker.

  • Easy to Use
  • Supports 7000 citation styles
  • Citations only
  • Premium comes at an extra cost

I worked as a professional sub-editor for several national newspapers and completed several proofreading courses. Over the years, I have written dozens of essays for newspapers, magazines, and online publications. Several years ago, I also completed a Master’s thesis at Trinity College Dublin, awarded a distinction. I also have a degree and several diplomas from various Irish universities. On Become a Writer Today, I’ve worked with writing software reviewers to profile many of the best tools and apps, including the grammar-checking tools featured here.

We regularly update this roundup of grammar checker tools. In addition, we test the features inside these writing tools by checking PDFs, articles, book chapters, and blog posts for grammatical mistakes and other issues.  These articles and writing samples range from several hundred to several thousand words. Typically, we test them using the web, desktop, and browser apps and plugins.

Research paper writers and academics looking for an all-around grammar checker should consider Grammarly . It is the easiest to use and offers educational bodies and employee discounts.

We liked Quillbot for how it handles citations. Correct English is lesser-known, if applicable, grammar checker that also handles citations nicely. Academics insistent on a grammar checker that works offline should check out Antidote.

There is an indicator in the lower right corner of the writing area, on clicking the indicator, it displays the number of errors and suggestions.

One downside of Grammarly is that you have to switch to a text editor for proofing. Also, Grammarly can be upgraded to the paid version, Grammarly Premium, which is a service that detects plagiarism and provides citation suggestions. The free version of Grammarly gives you access to only basic features.

Ginger is another handy spelling and grammar checking online tool to improve your writing skills. It can be used on-board in the browser and provides a great user experience. Furthermore, it displays a small icon in the lower right corner of the WordPress post editor, compose area, including Gmail, Facebook, and more. It highlights detected errors as you type. This helps in tracking them easily. However, Ginger has several drawbacks, one of which is the need to switch from WordPress to a text editor. The hassle of having to start the Ginger editor separately by clicking on the icon for better proofing is time-consuming.

Check your research paper for readability with AJE's free grammar check tool. Our tool rates your paper based on the academic English language quality of your paper using metrics specific to academics within the seven major fields of study: Clinical Medicine, Life Science, Physical Science, Business and Law, Humanities and Social Science, Engineering and Materials Science, and Mathematics and Computer Science.

AJE's Grammar Check looks for:

  • Readability
  • Incorrect Grammar

Consistency

A free online grammar check specifically for academics, help your research get heard.

Poorly communicated research is simply less likely to be published in academic journals. Communicating science in the English language can be difficult and confusing. Native and non-native English speakers, regardless of their language skills, should have their manuscripts reviewed before submission.

The AJE Grammar Check tool can help you determine the clarity of your academic paper, find grammatical mistakes, and ensure a better understanding of your research within your area of study. With AJE's Grammar Check, researchers can think about their next research project and let AJE think about the grammar in their academic paper or grant application. Start your grammar check here.

The benefits of checking your grammar

Avoid rejection due to poor grammar.

Papers can be in a journal's peer review queue for many months, sometimes years. According to a study in the Journal of Epidemiology, 62% of accepted submissions were rejected at least once. A paper's rejection after a long-awaited response can be frustrating for any author. Imagine the frustration if the article were rejected due to an avoidable issue, like poor grammar.

The AJE grammar check tool is free to use. And if your paper is submission-ready, our proprietary system will make you aware.

Get peace of mind with a free grammar check

Get results in minutes.

Only 7.6% of manuscript submissions to Nature journals were published in 2017.

Researchers often work long hours and late nights to solve real-world problems. Much of that research deserves to be heard, yet only a small percentage make it into the most competitive journals. Don't let grammar be the reason why your paper was rejected.

There are many reasons a paper may need expert assistance : an edit or review to ensure your language is clear to your audience, a full translation by a native English speaker with an advanced degree to help share your research with the broader community, or formatting to meet the requirements of a specific journal. Whatever the case, we have the expertise and solutions to help. Get peace of mind by checking the grammar in your academic paper.

Why use AJE Grammar Check?

Aje is trusted by more than 3,000 academic journals.

The AJE Grammar Check tool compares your academic paper to hundreds of thousands of edited and unedited papers that were hand-scored for clarity, readability, grammar, and consistency. The grammar check tool populates a score of 0-10, with a higher score indicating higher English language quality. Papers that underwent editing through one of AJE's editing services have an average quality score in the 96th percentile when compared to unedited submissions.

The AJE Grammar Check tool will review your research paper for proper technical grammar and provide you with a score.

A common spell check tool can find obvious misspelled words, but AJE's grammar check tool is designed for complicated technical words commonly used within academic papers.

How clear is your technical writing? The AJE Grammar Check tool takes context and sentence structure into account when analyzing your academic manuscript.

A common problem with academic writing is inconsistency in the use of abbreviations or technical terms. Our tool looks for these key signals when performing its analysis.

What is AJE's Language Quality Score?

After a paper has gone through the grammar check process, the paper is given a quality score of 0-10. The Language Quality Score was developed by AJE and is designed specifically for the field-specific language commonly used by researchers.

The higher the score, the better the use of English within the submitted academic paper.

Best Grammar Checker: Top 10

Johannes Helmold

The go-to choice for the best grammar checker solution is Quillbot. The platform offers many useful features aside from grammar checking, provides a seamless user experience, and helps correct mistakes across all counts, from spelling to punctuation and word use cases.

Infographics showing Best Grammar Checkers with Quillbot having the highest AHelp score of 75.7

How many words do you write in a day? If you count all the messages and emails you have to write, documents and assignments to submit, you probably type around (or sometimes even more than) 5000 words. And how many words do you misspell? Especially when in a rush trying to catch onto that deadline or when you just need to urgently write an email to your professor, supervisor, or manager.

Probably, you don’t even count those since T9 handles them for you. Though, it doesn’t correct all the typos, slang, or interchanged words does it? In the end, you send a message that can look something like this:

“So sorry I couldnt hand in everything in time. Smth urgent came up. I will make sure to take care of the metter some time in teh future”

In these situations, what would you most benefit from is a quality spell checker. It would underline all the issues right away and give you suggestions on how to correct them. Luckily, there are plenty of such services and the only thing you have to do is pick one of them as your assistant. Easy, right? Well, how do you know that your chosen platform will correct all the mistakes? Won’t you have to read through the text yourself just to be sure?

We decided to make it easier for you and tested 14 most popular spell-checking solutions ourselves . We analyzed all of them and compiled a list of the top 10 apps for correcting grammar.

Reviewing Best Grammar Checker Free Options

There are a lot of online grammar-checking tools. That’s why to find the most quality ones we needed to test them ourselves. Even though the main point of a good spell checker is to simply and quickly identify and correct grammatical mistakes, it is not the sole criterion for its effectiveness.

Our team takes a holistic approach when it comes to the examination of different online services, and grammar correction platforms aren’t an exception. We paid attention to user experience aspects, as well as the variety of offered features and pricing. We also took a complex approach to the practical part of our research. To do that, we prepared 3 separate texts of different lengths, purposes, and styles :

  • A brief email to a professor asking for a deadline extension
  • A personal statement essay from a college application form
  • An introductory part of a research paper in Business Management.

In all three pieces, we made mistakes in punctuation, spelling, grammar, word use, and sentence structure. We run all three texts through each grammar checker. Based on their performance we determined the accuracy of their spell-checking mechanisms.

All the results were put together to form an A*Help score, which reflects the usefulness, usability, and effectiveness of every service. This score was what allowed us to create the following list. If you want to learn more about our testing methodology, see our How We Test Spell Checkers guide.

Top List of Best Grammar Checker Solutions

Here’s the list of top 10 picks when it comes to choosing a quality spell checker.

Service logo

Quillbot is a well-known and versatile service that provides grammar-checking features alongside its paraphrasing tool and plagiarism checker.

When we decided to test its spell checker, we were surprised to find that it was completely free. It had no limitations on the length of the text we could submit or the areas it analyzed. It also covered all the major mistake areas, as it corrected grammar, spelling, punctuation, word use errors, and sentence structure issues. The platform didn’t require registration making the work process even quicker and more pleasant. Despite the free use, we didn’t encounter any irritating ads on the website that would confuse us during our grammar checks.

As to the correction quality, Quillbot showed that it knew how to identify and handle errors. It found most of the grammar and spelling mistakes in our pieces of writing and also helped a little bit with punctuation and word use improvements. Below you can see the score for mistake correction in each of our texts.

Mistake Correction Score: 26.7/45

Quillbot definitely set the bar high for all the other platforms, mostly due to its effective grammar-checking mechanisms, but also thanks to its convenience and versatility as an online tool.

  • Unlimited usage at no cost
  • Can proofread documents
  • High-quality error checking
  • Might highlight errors that aren’t there
  • Lacks recommendations for correct word choices

LanguageTool

A screenshot of the LanguageTool homepage from the list of online grammar checkers

Languagetool is the name that already sounds like a quality spell checker. And the fact that it was launched back in 2005 gives it the allure of a trustworthy and effective platform.

We used the service for free since it allowed us to check up to 10k characters at no cost. Languagetool offered all the key checking features such as spelling, grammar, punctuation correction, word misuse identification, and sentence suggestions. It also provided a personalized dictionary on top of it, which allowed us to add words that weren’t supposed to be highlighted. We didn’t even need to register to try everything which added a few points to the platform’s convenience. Aside from that, we noticed that we could install it as an app or as a browser extension.

Languagetool also helped us a lot with our text improvement. It flagged and successfully corrected all the spelling and grammar mistakes and a bigger part of punctuation errors. Aside from that, it provided suggestions regarding sentence structure. The results below show how many issues it helped us improve.

Mistake Correction Score: 24.9/45

Languagetool is definitely worth your attention as a spell checker because with its help your grammar will shine brighter than the diamonds. After all, its user-friendly platform and high quality of help were the reasons why we put it in the second place on this list.

  • Available for use at no cost
  • Offers top-notch grammar corrections
  • Multilingual checking opportunities
  • Lacks comprehensive sentence recommendations
  • May highlight inaccuracies that aren’t present

Service logo

We all know or at least heard about Grammarly. This widely popular spell-checking tool offers to proofread everything for you, from emails to long academic papers, and go as far as correcting your style and tone of voice according to requirements.

Grammarly offers a free-to-use option for its customers, which, however, doesn’t uncover the service’s full potential. When we tried it, it provided all the ground features like checking grammar, punctuation, spelling, and a little bit of sentence suggestions. The style however and a team’s version of the app were only available at $30/month. There was also one more condition – to use Grammarly’s free version we had to create an account. However, it wasn’t so much of a problem considering the platform was incredibly adaptable and easy-to-use. We could even install it as an app or a browser extension to help us edit texts directly in Google Docs.

As to the quality of grammar correction, Grammarly did show it can greatly help in improving your writing. It detected all the errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and showed a few suggestions regarding the right use of words and sentence structure. Below you can see the general amount of mistakes the service successfully corrected in each text.

Mistake Correction Score: 27.6/45

Even though Grammarly is widely-recognized, it earned its 3rd place not because of its popularity. Rather it proved to be a handy solution that was able to help us correct most mistakes in our texts.

  • Provides beneficial sentence recommendations
  • Includes a free usage option
  • Gives stylistic advice
  • The premium version is expensive
  • May highlight non-existent errors

Scribbr is a multi-tool founded back in 2012. This platform includes a plagiarism checker, a citation generator, and, what was the most interesting to our research, a grammar-checking feature.

The first thing we noted was that Scribbr could be used without an account and that it allowed proofreading texts in different languages namely Spanish, French, and German. We worked with the service for free, without any limitations, and with no annoying ads. It also covered the detection of mistakes in all 4 main categories from grammar to sentence suggestions. However, to check your writing you can only paste text in the respective field on the platform, as Scribbr has no option to upload documents or install it as an extension.

Scribbr’s platform also provided us with a compelling correction quality. Without any trouble, the service identified mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It didn’t do so well with word use suggestions, but it did identify incorrectly structured sentences. Below you can see a more detailed explanation of the scores.

Mistake Correction Score: 24.8/45

Scribbr showed that even when you multitask and do all the different types of activities, you don’t necessarily lose in quality. For this reason, its spell-checker, having proved to be effective in correcting most types of grammatical errors, landed 4th on our list.

  • Offers free usage without restrictions
  • Supports multiple languages
  • Ideal for brief texts
  • Lacks sentence recommendations
  • Absence of a dedicated app or browser extension

GrammarCheck

GrammarCheck

GrammarCheck is a free service that helps with spelling and grammar correction. Despite its simple design, we still gave this platform a try.

We didn’t need to register on the service, as it didn’t even have the option to create a profile. Even though GrammarCheck wasn’t so aesthetically pleasing, it was simple to use and didn’t have any ads to distract us from the checking process. What was also surprising was that, despite only handling texts in English, the service could check writings in different regional English accents. Similarly to its competitors, the platform covered grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word use mistakes correction but didn’t provide almost any sentence structure suggestions.

Now, moving on to the checking quality. GrammarCheck didn’t show impressive results. Nonetheless, it detected and helped us correct half the mistakes we made in each of our texts. It proved to be most helpful with spelling and grammar errors. Below you can see the results of each written piece.

Mistake Correction Score: 23/45

GrammarCheck service showed to provide a rather effective grammar correction for a free platform with such a plain design and structure. That’s why we put it 5th in our ranking.

  • Unlimited access without any cost
  • Provides a high-quality grammar review
  • Recognizes different English dialects
  • Doesn’t offer correct word choice recommendations
  • Lacks additional features or auxiliary services

Grammar.com

Grammar.com

Being a free spell-checker, Grammar.com instantly caught our attention. And when we read that aside from grammar and spelling improvements it also offered writing suggestions, we had no doubts about trying it.

This platform was the one to check all the boxes in terms of providing great value for money. It was free, had no limits to its use, could cover texts in all the different languages, and also provided a selection of extra features aside from regular grammar-spelling-punctuation-structure correction. The website itself was also simple to work with, despite not being the most pleasing to look at. It didn’t require us to register and offered an option to install it as a browser extension.

The quality of mistake correction, however, wasn’t the best. Grammar.com did a good job of improving all the spelling errors and even some punctuation. Other than that, it left out a lot of grammar mistakes and improperly structured sentences. Below you can see how many mistakes it was able to find and correct in each text.

Mistake Correction Score: 15/45

Grammar.com was easy to use. Yet, its spell-checking process could definitely be more efficient. That’s why we put the service 6th in our rating.

  • Available at no cost
  • Equipped with additional features
  • Might not identify every error
  • Doesn’t process documents

Service logo

Sapling is a platform that can provide you with tools to make your writing sound better. One of these is the platform’s spell checker.

The tool requires no registration or subscription. However, with such a free use there are some limitations on what it can detect in your texts. Mostly, it can identify errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and doesn’t give any sentence suggestions. If you want it to help improve your style, you would need to purchase its $25 monthly subscription. As to convenience, Sapling is a user-friendly platform. Everything is simple: you can either paste your text in the field or download it as a browser extension to help correct writing right in Google Docs.

The checking quality, as we noticed, wasn’t the most effective though. Sapling mostly flagged spelling issues and grammar errors. Sometimes, it even highlighted sentence structure mistakes. On the other hand, it completely omitted all the punctuation problems. Below you can see the results of such work.

Mistake Correction Score: 18.3/45

In general, Sapling grammar checker was neither good nor bad. It showed to offer a fair share of perks but balanced them out with a rather dull grammar-checking quality. So, the service became a solution number 7 on our list.

  • Compatible with multiple languages
  • No account registration needed
  • Provides a browser plugin
  • Offers subpar checking capabilities
  • Restricted access in the free version

Service logo

Duplichecker

Duplichecker

Duplichecker is a service that can do it all. Need a plagiarism check? Here you go. Want to use a paraphraser? Use all you want. Need to check your text for grammar and spelling mistakes? As we found out, it can do that too.

Duplichecker’s spelling correction platform was free to use, without any limitations, but with quite a few annoying ads. Aside from correcting spelling, grammar, and word use, there were also a few extra features on the platform, like a translator, for example. In addition, the service also could be used to proofread written pieces in other languages aside from English, like Spanish, French, and German, for example. We were also glad to see that it could work with documents as well as with copypasted texts.

And if the value for money and overall experience at Duplichecker were rather good, we couldn’t say the same about the received quality of grammar check. The service, to our surprise, corrected only a few grammar and spelling mistakes, not even detecting all of them. It completely ignored punctuation and sentence structure issues, and only rarely suggested proper word use. We included a table below showing how many errors it handled in each of our writing.

Mistake Correction Score: 12/45

Duplichecker, on the contrary to Scribbr, didn’t prove to be that good in multitasking. And even such a wide selection of features and a varied language base can’t justify such a poor mistake-detection quality. That’s why Duplichecker came 8th in our ranking.

  • Offers a trial before signing up
  • Allows addition of files and links
  • Doesn’t permit manual text modifications
  • Texts have poor readability

Service logo

You might have heard about Reverso as a translation tool but did you know it also had a grammar-checking feature? When we learned about that we just couldn’t pass it by and not check it out.

Reverso’s spell checker is a free tool, which, however, has a word count limit of 360 characters (70 words) without an account and 900 characters (180 words) with an account. That’s why we needed to buy a monthly subscription for $6.49to be able to test the service’s full potential. The website itself was neatly organized and visually appealing. It also offered to install Reverso either as an app or a browser extension for more seamless usage.

However, as we checked the grammar correction itself, we knew that we wouldn’t use it much in the future. Like many other competitors, Reverso spell check did well in detecting spelling errors, and even some grammatical and punctuation mistakes. However, it didn’t help at all with the sentence structure or word use. Make sure to look at the table below for more precise results on the platform’s effectiveness.

Mistake Correction Score: 13.2/45

Reverso may be good for translation purposes, but its spell-checking feature didn’t shine that much in our experience. The website, though rather convenient and versatile, proved to be less effective in terms of text improvement. So, it landed ist 9th place on the list.

  • A range of additional features
  • Supports a wide array of languages
  • Available in app and browser extension formats
  • Minimal grammar correction performance
  • Limited free trial

Service logo

ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid

Pro writing aid definitely sounds like a pro in helping with text improvement in general and spell-checking mainly. Sometimes, names can be too loud though.

One of the advantages of ProWritingAid was that we didn’t have to create an account. We could also use the service for free. Despite the stated limit of 500 words per check, we used the spell checker to proofread texts longer than that. The platform was designed to handle English texts specifically, and, as we noted, it could only identify issues in 3 main aspects: grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Aside from that, it didn’t provide any extra features.

If the overall experience wasn’t so bad, the text correction at ProwritingAid wasn’t so pleasing. While the service identified some grammar and spelling errors, it didn’t show any consistency in detecting mistakes in punctuation, word use, or sentence structure. It showed a few mistakes here and there in these categories, but too few to talk about high efficiency in these fields. Make sure to check out the results below to see what we are talking about.

Mistake Correction Score: 14.7/45

Thus, considering a limited selection of features and a poor grammar correction efficiency, Prowritingaid marks the last position on our list.

  • Available for use at no charge
  • No sign-up required
  • Can be installed as an app or browser extension
  • Offers substandard grammar check
  • Lacks beneficial additional features

Best Spell Checker: The Verdict

Literacy is important and it is reflected in your writing. That’s why you would only benefit from working with a grammar checker hand in hand. Even if you are sure you don’t make mistakes, it never hurts to check, especially if you don’t have to re-read everything yourself. Of course, there are a lot of different solutions when it comes to online spelling checkers. That’s why we put them to the test and created a list of the best options to save you some time checking them all out. Based on our experience, Quillbot is the number 1 grammar correction service . That’s just our opinion though. We encourage you to try other options and find the one that works for you. The last word is always yours.

Below you can find all texts that we used in this mysrery shopping.

How To Pick The Best Grammar Checker Online: Buyer’s Guide

There are a lot more other grammar checkers aside from those mentioned in our list. And if you happen to prefer one of those outside this ranking, you need to make sure that it is a good option. But how do you know?  We decided to help you out a little bit and created a list of features that can hint at the quality of your chosen service.

Checking Features

The grammar-checking software, most of the time, is not limited to grammar mistakes identification. Generally, it can also pinpoint spelling mistakes as well. However, it’s better to look for platforms that do more than that and can also flag punctuation issues, and misuse of words, and identify problems with sentence structure. After all, having that all-in-one solution never hurt anybody.

Free-to-Use Option

Most services we try provide at least a free trial with a word limit. A good portion of checked platforms just offer their spell-checking features for free. So, it’s a good sign when a spell-checking tool you chose can, at the minimum, give you a heads up on what it does and provide you with a test trial. It’s even better when you can check texts of any length at no cost at all.

Checking Process

Usually, it takes a few seconds for a spell checker to scan and mark possible errors. However, some platforms may have specific work processes. They may not allow to correct mistakes one by one or underline places without any issues. Make sure the service you want to work with:

  • Underlines each mistake separately
  • Highlights problematic sentences
  • Allows to correct mistakes one by one
  • Doesn’t underline imaginary issues.

Correction Quality

Last but not least is how well a spell checker actually handles its duties. Who would want to work with a service that checks one-half of mistakes and leaves out the others? So, test the waters a little bit with a sample text and see how well your tool identifies spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. If it can point out most of them, then you are good to go and check more complex pieces of writing.

Check for unintentional plagiarism

Easily check your paper for missing citations and accidental plagiarism with the EasyBib plagiarism checker. The EasyBib plagiarism checker:

  • Scans your paper against billions of sources.
  • Identifies text that may be flagged for plagiarism.
  • Provides you with a plagiarism score.

You can submit your paper at any hour of the day and quickly receive a plagiarism report.

What is the EasyBib plagiarism checker?

Most basic plagiarism checkers review your work and calculate a percentage, meaning how much of your writing is indicative of original work. But, the EasyBib plagiarism checker goes way beyond a simple percentage. Any text that could be categorized as potential plagiarism is highlighted, allowing you time to review each warning and determine how to adjust it or how to cite it correctly.

You’ll even see the sources against which your writing is compared and the actual word for word breakdown. If you determine that a warning is unnecessary, you can waive the plagiarism check suggestion.

Plagiarism is unethical because it doesn’t credit those who created the original work; it violates intellectual property and serves to benefit the perpetrator. It is a severe enough academic offense, that many faculty members use their own plagiarism checking tool for their students’ work. With the EasyBib Plagiarism checker, you can stay one step ahead of your professors and catch citation mistakes and accidental plagiarism before you submit your work for grading.

Why use a plagiarism checker?

Imagine – it’s finals week and the final research paper of the semester is due in two days. You, being quite familiar with this high-stakes situation, hit the books, and pull together a ten-page, last-minute masterpiece using articles and materials from dozens of different sources.

However, in those late, coffee-fueled hours, are you fully confident that you correctly cited all the different sources you used? Are you sure you didn’t accidentally forget any? Are you confident that your teacher’s plagiarism tool will give your paper a 0% plagiarism score?

That’s where the EasyBib plagiarism checker comes in to save the day. One quick check can help you address all the above questions and put your mind at ease.

What exactly is plagiarism?

Plagiarism has a number of possible definitions; it involves more than just copying someone else’s work. Improper citing, patchworking, and paraphrasing could all lead to plagiarism in one of your college assignments. Below are some common examples of accidental plagiarism that commonly occur.

Quoting or paraphrasing without citations

Not including in-text citations is another common type of accidental plagiarism. Quoting is taking verbatim text from a source. Paraphrasing is when you’re using another source to take the same idea but put it in your own words. In both cases, it’s important to always cite where those ideas are coming from. The EasyBib plagiarism checker can help alert you to when you need to accurately cite the sources you used.

Patchwork plagiarism

When writing a paper, you’re often sifting through multiple sources and tabs from different search engines. It’s easy to accidentally string together pieces of sentences and phrases into your own paragraphs. You may change a few words here and there, but it’s similar to the original text. Even though it’s accidental, it is still considered plagiarism. It’s important to clearly state when you’re using someone else’s words and work.

Improper citations

Depending on the class, professor, subject, or teacher, there are multiple correct citation styles and preferences. Some examples of common style guides that are followed for citations include MLA, APA, and Chicago style. When citing resources, it’s important to cite them accurately. Incorrect citations could make it impossible for a reader to track down a source and it’s considered plagiarism. There are EasyBib citation tools to help you do this.

Don’t fall victim to plagiarism pitfalls. Most of the time, you don’t even mean to commit plagiarism; rather, you’ve read so many sources from different search engines that it gets difficult to determine an original thought or well-stated fact versus someone else’s work. Or worse, you assume a statement is common knowledge, when in fact, it should be attributed to another author.

When in doubt, cite your source!

Time for a quick plagiarism quiz!

Which of the following requires a citation?

  • A chart or graph from another source
  • A paraphrase of an original source
  • Several sources’ ideas summarized into your own paragraph
  • A direct quote
  • All of the above

If you guessed option E than you’d be correct. Correct punctuation and citation of another individual’s ideas, quotes, and graphics are a pillar of good academic writing.

What if you copy your own previous writing?

Resubmitting your own original work for another class’s assignment is a form of self-plagiarism, so don’t cut corners in your writing. Draft an original piece for each class or ask your professor if you can incorporate your previous research.

What features are available with the EasyBib plagiarism checker?

Along with providing warnings and sources for possible plagiarism, the EasyBib  plagiarism checker works alongside the other EasyBib tools, including a grammar checker  and a spell checker . You’ll receive personalized feedback on your thesis and writing structure too!

The  plagiarism checker compares your writing sample with billions of available sources online so that it detects plagiarism at every level. You’ll be notified of which phrases are too similar to current research and literature, prompting a possible rewrite or additional citation. You’ll also get feedback on your paper’s inconsistencies, such as changes in text, formatting, or style. These small details could suggest possible plagiarism within your assignment.

And speaking of citations, there are also  EasyBib citation tools  available. They help you quickly build your bibliography and avoid accidental plagiarism. Make sure you know which citation format your professor prefers!

Great! How do I start?

Simply copy and paste or upload your essay into the checker at the top of this page. You’ll receive the first five grammar suggestions for free! To try the plagiarism checker for free, start your EasyBib Plus three-day free trial.* If you love the product and decide to opt for premium services, you’ll have access to unlimited writing suggestions and personalized feedback.

Avoiding accidental plagiarism

You don't need a plagiarism checker, right?

You would never copy-and-paste someone else’s work, you’re great at paraphrasing, and you always keep a tidy list of your sources handy.

But what about accidental plagiarism ? It’s more common than you think! Maybe you paraphrased a little too closely, or forgot that last citation or set of quotation marks.

Even if you did it by accident, plagiarism is still a serious offense. You may fail your course, or be placed on academic probation. The risks just aren’t worth it.

Scribbr & academic integrity

Scribbr is committed to protecting academic integrity. Our plagiarism checker software, Citation Generator , proofreading services , and free Knowledge Base content are designed to help educate and guide students in avoiding unintentional plagiarism.

We make every effort to prevent our software from being used for fraudulent or manipulative purposes.
