A job loss can mean a nightmare to any parent. Its implications are severe because of the devastating fall in income and economic security for a family. It has an impact on the parents’ mental and physical health. In addition, it affects family relationships and can result to marital conflicts. When a person is laid off, economic concerns come up. He starts to ponder on how he will be able to sustain his family without any job. In a case where an individual has savings, his main worry will be how long the savings will sustain the family. An individual is also affected emotionally when he or she loses a job. The parent will first experience shock, disbelief and denial. Afterwards, anxiety and fear come in due to the unknown future. People experience fears of: paying bills, sustaining their families, finding another job and maintaining their current living standards. In addition, an individual gets depressed. This may result to a parent stopping doing his daily activities. Similarly, anger and frustration are experienced in some parents. In some cases, these parents may direct their anger to other persons in the community or family. Finally, some people experience shame after a layout. Social impacts are evident after a job loss. The relationship that people have changes after a layoff. This leads to the feeling of isolation and loneliness by the parent affected. In addition, a layoff affects the personal identity of a person. This mostly affects those parents who identify themselves with the jobs. These parents usually feel empty after a layoff and question whom they are. Consequently, they have an impact on the families. It could lead to a reversal of roles and a change in the living standards. In addition, the children are greatly affected in terms of school performance, and the support they get from parents. The children usually are the ones that pay the price of a layoff. Also, it can lead to less support and conflicts in marriages. In some circumstances, a layoff can lead to divorce. Valentin was a renowned man in the Juna village. His great stature was due to the wealth he had accumulated over the years. He was one of the lucky fellas who had been employed by the Kingsley Company. Kingsley Company dealt with selling and repair of electric appliances. Every person in the village envied him and wished to be like Valentin. Pearl, a beautiful charming lady in the village, worked her way and got married to Valentin. She had been attracted to Valentin because of his wealth. She did know life is like a box of chocolates; one never knows what to get. In the Juna Village men who had many children were highly respected. Valentin did not want to miss among that list. They had five children in quick succession. They were able to raise their kids well and took them to good schools. After some years, an economic crisis affected Kingsley Company, and it was forced to lay off some workers. Unfortunately, Valentin was among the workers laid off. Upon hearing the news, he drowned into a sea of grief. He entered into a state of shock, disbelief and denial. He could be heard gabbling statements like: “this cannot be happening”. When her wife heard about the news, she broke into tears. She knew that their main source of finance to the family had been cut off. The family had now to rely on a few pennies they got from Pearl’s business. She had started a business of selling foodstuffs to the village. Depression engulfed Valentin Completely. It did not take time for the whole village to know what had befallen their man of great stature. The job loss affected Valentin emotionally, and his pride tremendously reduced. In addition, it affected the performance of their children in school. After a while, the parents were forced to transfer them to cheaper schools where they could afford school fees. In addition, they had to sell some of their belongings and cars in order to sustain their lives. Quarrels and fights became the order of the day. Pearl could not find Valentin lovable again. They fought like cats and dogs when they disagreed slightly. After untenable disagreements, they divorced and agreed on a scheme supporting their children. Pearl’s love that was as deep as the ocean existed no more. Valentin could not believe how the world had turned upside down. He spent his time in the house pondering his next move. Also, he did not want to intermingle with people. He had sold almost all his belongings, and his stature in the village was no more. After a year, he suffered from high blood pressure. This was a result of the high stress he was experiencing. Their children were affected in their school performance. This was due to the scorns and insults they got from their fellow children at school. The school fees, though minimal, was sometimes difficult to get, and they were often sent out of school. Valentin is now selling second-hand clothes to make ends meet. A job loss of a parent has negative impacts not only on the parent but also the family. It affects the parent emotionally, economically and socially. In addition, it deprives the parent’s personal identity. Therefore, a job loss has depressing effects on the parent’s family.

The Impact of Parental Expectations on a Child’s Career Success

Parental expectations significantly shape a child’s life, including their education, career, and overall success. Parents strongly influence their child’s development and future aspirations, and their expectations can have positive and negative effects.

While high parental expectations can motivate and encourage children to succeed, unrealistic or overly demanding expectations can lead to stress, anxiety, and conflict. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the impact of parental expectations on a child’s career success and how parents can balance their expectations with their child’s interests and aspirations.

Types of Parental Expectations

Parents have a range of expectations for their children, which may vary depending on their cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. Here are some of the most common types of parental expectations:

1. Academic Expectations

Parents often have high expectations for their children’s academic performance in terms of maintaining good grades, academic excellence, and the pursuit of higher education. They may enrol their children in tutoring programs, hire private teachers, or monitor their progress closely to ensure academic success.

2. Career Expectations

Parents may also have expectations for their children’s future careers, such as choosing a high-paying, prestigious, or socially desirable profession. They may encourage their children to pursue certain careers or discourage them from pursuing others based on their beliefs, values, and experiences.

3. Performance Expectations

Parents may have expectations for their children’s performance in various domains, such as sports, music, or art. They may expect their children to excel in these areas and invest time, money, and effort to support their training and development.

4. Social Expectations

Parents can also have expectations for their children’s social skills, behaviour, and values. They may teach them to be polite, respectful, and empathetic and encourage them to engage in community service, volunteer work, or other socially responsible activities.

Understanding these parental expectations can help us recognize how they can influence a child’s career success and overall development. While parental expectations can play a significant role in a child’s career success, it’s important for parents to also consider how parents can help children building study habits and a strong work ethic, which can support their educational and career goals in the long run.

Positive Impact of Parental Expectations on a Child’s Career Success

While parental expectations can sometimes be overwhelming or unrealistic, they can also positively affect a child’s career success. Here are some positive impacts of parental expectations:

1. Motivation and Encouragement

When parents set high expectations for their children’s academic and career success, it can motivate them to work harder, take risks, and pursue challenging goals. Parents’ encouragement and support can give children the confidence to pursue their passions and overcome obstacles.

2. Positive Reinforcement

Parents who express pride and appreciation for their child’s achievements and efforts can reinforce positive behaviours and encourage their children to continue working towards their goals. This can also increase their child’s sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

3. Role Modelling

Parents who model successful and fulfilling careers can inspire their children to pursue similar paths. This can help children better understand the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to succeed in their chosen field. A parent’s profession can have a significant impact on their children’s career aspirations and achievement, highlighting the importance of understanding how parent’s profession impacts children.

4. Building Self-Esteem and Confidence

When parents express their belief in their child’s abilities, it can help build their self-esteem and confidence. This can lead to increased self-efficacy, which is the belief in one’s ability to succeed in a particular task or situation.

5. Developing a Strong Work Ethic

Parents who expect their children to work hard and persevere through challenges can instill a strong work ethic in their children. This can help them develop the skills and habits necessary for success in their chosen career path.

Negative Impact of Parental Expectations on a Child’s Career Success

While there is a positive impact of parental expectations on a child’s career success, they can also have negative impacts. Here are some negative impacts of parental expectations:

1. Unrealistic Expectations

Parents who set unrealistic expectations for their children’s academic and career success can create stress, anxiety, and a sense of inadequacy. When children feel that they can never meet their parents’ expectations, it can lead to a lack of motivation and a decrease in self-esteem.

2. Pressure and Stress

Parents who put excessive pressure on their children to perform well in school or pursue certain careers can result in stress and anxiety in them. This can lead to burnout, physical and emotional exhaustion, and a lack of interest in learning or exploring new opportunities.

3. Limited Autonomy and Exploration

When parents have rigid expectations for their children’s career paths, it can limit their autonomy and exploration. Children may feel they must fulfill their parents’ expectations rather than pursue their passions and interests.

4. Conflict With Parental Expectations and Personal Interests

When parents have different expectations for their children’s career paths than their children, it can lead to conflict and tension. This can create a sense of dissonance between their interests and their parents’ expectations, making it difficult to make career decisions that align with their passions and goals.

Balancing Parental Expectations and Child’s Career Aspirations

To ensure the positive impact of parental expectations on a child’s career success, it is important to balance them with the child’s interests and aspirations. Here are some ways in which parents can balance their expectations with their child’s career aspirations:

1. Effective Communication and Collaboration

Parents and children should communicate openly and honestly about their expectations and aspirations. This can help parents understand their child’s interests and goals and can help children understand their parents’ expectations. Collaborating with their children can also help parents provide the necessary support and guidance to help their children achieve their career aspirations.

2. Encouraging Exploration and Self-Discovery

Parents should encourage their children to explore different career options and pursue their passions. This can help children gain a better understanding of their interests and strengths and can help them identify career paths that align with their goals and aspirations.

3. Emphasizing Personal Growth and Development

Parents should emphasize the importance of personal growth and development rather than just academic or career success. Encouraging their children to develop problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills can help them succeed in their chosen career path.

4. Respecting Individual Differences and Choices

Parents should also learn to respect their children’s personal choices, even if they do not meet their expectations. This can help children develop a sense of autonomy and independence, which is crucial for success in any career path.

By balancing their expectations with their child’s interests and aspirations, parents can provide the necessary support and guidance to help their children achieve their career goals while promoting personal growth and development.

The positive impact of parental expectations can motivate, encourage, and build a child’s self-esteem. Whereas, negative expectations can create stress and conflict and limit a child’s potential. Therefore, parents must find common ground between their expectations with their child’s interests and aspirations.

Parents can achieve this balance through effective communication, encouraging exploration and self-discovery, personal growth and development, and respecting individual differences and choices. By doing so, parents can help their children achieve their career goals while promoting personal growth and development, leading to a successful and fulfilling career path.

Should Parents be Involved in a Child’s Career Choice?

Child’s Career Choice

Parents often wonder if they should be involved in their child’s career choice. There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument. On one hand, parents can offer valuable insight and guidance based on their experience in the workforce. On the other hand, too much involvement could limit a child’s ability to make their own decisions.

Parents exert a strong influence on how their children choose careers. They may influence them directly and indirectly, intentionally and inadvertently, consciously and unconsciously. Since parents generally live with the child during the formative years, they tend to have a strong influence on how their children make career decisions.

While most parents report having little to no influence on their children’s careers, research indicates that children have a different perception, stating that their parents played a significant role in their career choices.

Research shows that parental norms and values most often affect children’s career aspirations via parental interactions (Lavine, 1982), involvement in schoolwork (Simpson, 2003), and gender expectations (Jacobs, Chhin & Bleeker, 2006; Hesse-Biber & Carter, 2000). While parents may assume other variables, such as occupation or education, to be most influential, their influence is most often exerted through normative channels, including their interest in schoolwork and aspirations for educational achievement (Simpson, 2003).

What are the Pros of Children Choosing a Career Based on Their Parents’ Expectations?

According to Michael Rutter (2000), “Young people tend both to share their parents’ values on major issues of life and also to turn to them for guidance on most major concerns.” Therefore, parents’ financial and socio-emotional support for a particular career path may boost the child’s self-esteem and career self-efficacy.

In addition to financial and socio-emotional support, parents provide valuable learning experiences through their own role models and supporting activities in exploring career interests.

What are the Cons of parent’s Involvement in the Child’s Career Choice?

The danger is that children may aspire to a career that follows their parents’ norms and values without developing their own sense of self. Jacobsen (1999) pointed out the following wager: “If your family’s values mesh with your own, you can find strength and guidance in them throughout your career. However, if these values don’t mesh, you’ll build a career that your parents take pride in, but that leaves you frustrated and empty” (Jacobsen, 1999, p. 101). For that reason, parents need to understand the many ways they can influence their children’s career choices.

What is a healthy level of involvement for parents?

Planned and proactive parents’ involvement is the best approach. Before discussing career choices with their child, parents should reflect on their own expectations, unfulfilled childhood desires, and what had influenced their career choices.

Parents should strive for their child to do their best, regardless of their career choices. Research shows that children who are expected to do their best become more focused on career-relevant goals and report high motivational levels. This positively affects their ability to reach certain career goals, leading to a sense of accomplishment.

What are healthy ways for parents to help kids navigate career choices?

Parents can help their children navigate career choices by fostering a healthy balance of challenge and support within the relationship.

Challenge refers to the stimulation, discipline, or training that parents and other family members direct toward the child. It also includes the family’s expectations and how much that child wishes to fulfil those expectations. Family support refers to how parents respond to a child, including their levels of comfort and love within the home.

Parents help create a challenging and supportive environment when they allow their children to explore their own interests.

  • Allow your child to explore all careers of interest. Let them shadow you at work for a day as well as other people (if possible).
  • Attend career choices exhibitions.
  • Encourage your child to talk to people from different careers and ask questions about their work and responsibilities.
  • Discuss the career your child is interested in from a neutral perspective. Point out the pros and cons, but don’t try to influence a decision.

Acting this way, parents can serve as inspiring role models and empower their children to make their own career choices.

Essay On Parents

To think, talk or write about parents can take one on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Parents are the most significant and influential people in every child's life. Right from giving us birth, parents toil hard to make us independent and self-sufficient individuals. Here are a few sample essays on “Parents”.

100 Words Essay On Parents

200 words essay on parents, 500 words essay on parents.

Essay On Parents

The influence of parents on children's life is significant, we are because they are. They are responsible for giving birth as well as bringing them up in a healthy way. Right from the day a child is born, parents take care of their every need and groom them to become effective members of society. They are essential to each stage of a child's development. Parents are givers of love, support, care and direction which is needed for one to move forward in life. Nothing is more reassuring and calming for a person than their parents’ arms, no matter how old they get.

For a youngling, parents are providers of everything. From the basic needs of food and personal hygiene, love and care, to all material needs and requirements. Parents toil hard in their respective occupations to give the best possible lives to their children. They do all in their power to make their children all their wishes.

First Teachers | Parents are a child's first teachers, and teach the essence of integral living. The lessons a child learns by observing their parents and listening to them are invaluable, and their real value is often understood after growing up and seeing some of life. It is from parents that children learn to face difficult situations and challenges in life.

Givers Of Love | Unconditional love and acceptance from parents is essential for the healthy development of any child into an adult. A child, whatever age they might be, is likely to feel more motivated to study, work, and achieve their goals if they know they have their parents to fall back upon. Some of the renowned psychologists of the world have established that the quality of one’s relationship with their parents has a huge impact on the kind of relationships they form as adults.

They say, it is at the birth of the child that a parent is born. The art of parenting is difficult to develop and maintain, there is something new to learn at every step. There is no turning back once one signs up for it. Parents need to carefully manage their time and mindfully manage work and personal life, such that they’re able to give adequate time to their children.

Parents As Providers | Like the human body needs food, water, and oxygen to survive, the body and the mind also need love, affection, and security to thrive. All these needs are, for the first few years of life, fulfilled solely by one’s parents. Parents share all our joys and griefs. They laugh when we laugh, and cry when we cry.

Lifelong Companions | Parental influence on a child's growth is fundamental. The journey from childhood to adulthood is full of physiological, psychological, and social changes. It is easier and less of a pain for individuals to go through these changes and deal with the various challenges they bring, if the journey is backed by the unconditional acceptance and support of parents.

Remind Us Of Strengths | Parents try to provide the best of education to their children. It is said that it is one’s parents who are the most well-aware of one’s skills, strengths, and limitations. Whenever needed, parents remind us of our strengths and encourage us to steer through all the challenges that come our way.

My Relationship With My Parents

I live in a family of six, including my parents, grandparents, my younger brother, and me. My father is a businessman, he is a builder with the govt., while my mother is a homemaker. When I was younger, I used to closer to my mother, share everything with her, spend time with her, but extremely scared of my father. My father had a controlling nature and so I thought he would get angry if I shared anything with him.

My Father And I | But as I grew up, I saw my father encouraging me to hone my talents of dancing, singing, and swimming. He got me enrolled in the best classes for each of these in our locality and would make sure that he dropped me and picked me up from the classes everyday. I realised that my father wanted me to become the best version of myself and polish each skill and talent I possessed, so I could feel proud of myself. One day, one of our relatives commented on me being slightly overweight. My father sensed that I felt embarrassed and that it was wrong of my aunt to comment like that, and so he immediately told my aunt that his daughter would live the kind of life she wanted to and that no one should comment on her choices, in any way.

My Mother And I | My mother and I are like the closest of friends. Not a day goes when I don’t sit with her to discuss what happens in school and among my friends. She never judges me and only tries to handhold me in situations where she feels I feel challenged. We go for lunch to some nice place once in a week and also do some shopping during those outings. She cooks my favourite dishes for me and pampers me like a little baby.

The Parents’ Role in the College Essay

parent job essay

To the ever-under-appreciated parents of teenagers,

We know how hard it is to be parents. You’re walking a fine line between wanting what is best for your children and trying to let them make their own decisions (and, let’s be honest, their own mistakes). Your child will only apply to college once, and it can be difficult to know how to balance your parental instincts with letting your student take ownership of the process. The good news is that we are here to make your life a little easier by allowing you to take a step back while we harangue your child to help get him where he needs to be in the admissions process.

Let’s address what’s probably the most stressful part of our journey together: the college essays. We will tackle this in three parts: first, we will discuss how most kids approach their essays, how Passport Admissions works with your child on their essays, and the best role of parents in this process.

How Most Kids Approach the College Essay

Most seventeen-year-olds think, “What can I say that will make colleges accept me?” They write essays based on what they believe colleges want to hear. And as a result, most kids make crucial mistakes in their college essays.

Mistake #1 - Most kids brag too much in their college essays.

How many valedictorians apply to college? All of them. How many class presidents? All of them. How many team captains? You get the idea.

There is virtually nothing that kids can brag about that will sell themselves to an admissions office. When a student tries to brag about himself in his essay: a) it doesn't work, and b) the essay blends into the pile of all the other applicants who are trying to do the same thing.

Mistake #2 - Most kids write essays that look and sound the same.

A former admissions officer for UVA, Parke Muth, once compared the college essay to a Big Mac.  Not because the essays are tasty and not because they have layers (though it can be argued that the college essay, like the Big Mac, is hazardous to your health). No, the college essay is like a Big Mac, because no matter where you go, the essays look and taste the same. Thus, Muth coined the term McEssay to refer to the generic college essay.

McEssays typically fall into one of the following five flavors. You will want to avoid these topics at all costs.

  • The hard work essay - "Being captain of the soccer team involved a lot of hard work, but I learned important lessons in leadership and perseverance."
  • The family trip to Europe essay - "Going to France showed me just how different other cultures are."
  • The summer program for gifted youth essay - "I am so fortunate to have been able to attend the National Youth Leadership Conference."
  • The athletics essay - "We lost the championship, but we came together as a team."
  • The saving the world through community service essay - "Building houses in Mexico was so rewarding."

We know these experiences have been meaningful to many of our students. But writing a McEssay makes a student blend in with every other applicant, so we have to find a unique topic.

Mistake #3 - Most kids polish all of the personality out of their essays.

Most students write their college essays by committee, seeking input and feedback from multiple teachers and parents, who - despite good intentions - will polish all of the life and personality out of the essay. Your teenager should sound like a teenager in his college essay. Consider the following excerpts:

"My nascent drum career began when I was twelve. Learning to play the drums was quite challenging at first, because I had little formal training and needed to learn more about rhythm and chord structure in order to contribute to my band. After rehearsing for innumerable hours, I eventually was able to keep up, but I still needed more help. I decided to get lessons to help improve my overall musical knowledge and particularly improve my music theory. In the end, the lessons paid off, and our band was better than ever."

"A band's drummer is the stupid one. He is the one paid not to write songs or to think, but to sit in the back and hit his instrument, as he is clearly far too idiotic to do anything more. I am a drummer, and while I like to think I am above this stereotype, I do sit in the back, behind all the “real musicians,” blissfully ignorant of ongoing deliberation over “What capo he needs to be in to be in the key of G”, perfectly happy that I understand none of it and absolutely satisfied with my lack of involvement, or responsibility to the band’s success. This being said, I am a good drummer, and when a musician needed a moron - I was a solid choice."

Which sounds like a high school student, and which like a parent? In revising an essay, it is crucial to keep the voice of the student and not to make it sound like it was written by a 40-year-old.

The Primary Purpose of the College Essay

The primary purpose of the college essay is to let the college get to know you and like you. That's it. When evaluating a college essay, we ask:

  • What do we learn about you?
  • Do we like you?
  • Is it interesting?
  • Is it generally free from grammatical and stylistic errors?

What role should parents play?

You know your kid a lot better than we do. We can't tell you exactly how much parental involvement will be the right amount for your student.

But we can at least share this insight about the college essays: the students who have had the most success have been the ones whose parents have been involved the least. Almost without fail, the students who have been accepted into their top choice colleges have been the ones whose parents have trusted their student to write great essays, helped their student only when asked, and otherwise stayed out of the process entirely.  And of course, these are the same families that seem to most enjoy the last year of their child living at home.

So there you have it. We hope that you are as excited as we are to help your student write the best essays she can write. Remember that we are not only experts on this stuff, but we really, really enjoy doing it. For us, editing is fun, and getting to know your student and his passions is what makes our jobs interesting and worthwhile.

Chronic Absenteeism Is a Crisis. Do Parents Get It?

A majority of parents and caregivers of students with high rates of school absences are not concerned about their children’s missed school days, new research finds.

The findings by researchers at the University of Southern California come as schools take on the uphill battle of bringing down rates of chronic absenteeism that doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. They suggest schools are facing a shift in attitudes toward absenteeism and need more targeted and effective messaging to help families rebuild strong attendance habits.

“If schools and districts are concerned about children’s absenteeism, they need to reach out to parents clearly, in ways that they understand,” said Morgan Polikoff, a professor of education at USC. “And they need to try and get to the bottom of what’s driving absenteeism, which is probably going to differ from kid to kid.”

Polikoff and fellow researchers surveyed parents and caregivers in 2,479 households between December 2023 and February 2024 to ask them about their children’s absences.

Five percent said their child had missed more than 10 days in the first semester of the 2023-24 school year, which meets the most common definition of chronic absenteeism: missing 10 percent or more school days in a year. Fewer than half of those respondents, 47 percent, said they were concerned about their child’s absences.

Eleven percent of respondents said their child had missed six to 10 days in the first semester, putting them at risk of chronic absenteeism, the USC researchers wrote in a March 26 brief for the Brookings Institution . Of those parents and caretakers, 29 percent reported concern about their child’s attendance.

Absenteeism rates remain high

National data on chronic absenteeism suggest respondents to the USC survey underreported—or weren’t aware of—the extent of their children’s school absences, the researchers wrote in a March 26 brief for the Brookings Institution .

National rates of chronic absenteeism doubled during the pandemic, reaching nearly 30 percent during the 2021-22 school year, according to Attendance Works, an organization that advocates for tracking and addressing student attendance. State data shows schools made some progress in bringing those numbers down during the 2022-23 school year, but they remain well above pre-pandemic levels in most places.

Concerns about parents understanding of attendance mirror a “perception gap” identified in previous research that found parents may not be aware of their children’s need for tutoring and academic acceleration following pandemic learning interruptions.

Poor student attendance patterns are affected by a range of systemic issues including poverty, healthcare coverage, and access to reliable transportation.

Education advocates have urged schools to take a multi-pronged approach to the problem that includes effective communication with families—everything from text message “nudges” that update parents on how many school days their child has missed, to districtwide campaigns about how attendance contributes to child well-being, to tailored strategies like home visits.

Previous research suggests the importance of a strong school-family relationship. An October study by the organizations Learning Heroes, an organization that studies parent attitudes about education, and TNTP, an organization that promotes effective teaching, found that schools where parents reported higher levels of trust in pre-pandemic surveys experienced lower levels of absenteeism after COVID-19 interruptions.

The USC survey data illuminates the challenges of crafting effective messages for parents. Respondents with children who were chronically absent or at risk of chronic absenteeism often did not identify a single, dominant reason for their absences.

Schools may benefit from explaining the value of in-person attendance, even if make-up assignments and classroom materials are available online, the researchers said.

Thirty-two percent of overall respondents said they weren’t concerned about absences because “everything their child needs to know is available online,” the survey found. Of respondents whose children missed six or more school days, 33 percent said they believed it was OK for their child to work from home if they preferred.

parent job essay

Should Students Have Part-Time Jobs? Essay

Introduction.

The supreme desire of every parent to take their children to school is for them to get the best education and excel at their studies. Despite this fact, there comes a point in time when the student needs to supplement the income from their parents or rather source funds to even cater for their education (Sloman, 652).

As a result, most students end up engaging in part-time jobs. It can be due to the necessity or desire to have some extra money to spend. The decision to engage in part-time jobs is entirely the student’s choice. Some get support from their parents, tutors, and friends, while others don’t.

But should students have part-time jobs? This essay tries to answer this question.

Before any decision to engage in part-time jobs is reached, three things have to be critically considered. These are the students themselves, their financial situation, and, finally, the type of work. The listed factors will allow a person to make decisions that they will not live to regret.

Therefore, this part-time job essay is an in-depth analysis of the advantages of students having jobs and a little discussion on the disadvantages.

Advantages of Part-Time Jobs for Students

Part-time jobs are of great essentiality since students are able to earn while at the same time studying. Most part-time jobs require that one works for about three to four hours a day, something that is manageable by almost every student, given the fact that lessons don’t take the entire day. Some of the benefits associated with part-time jobs for students include the following;

Relief of financial burden

Students who engage in part-time jobs get paid for the services offered; hence the earnings obtained can be used to partly relieve the students’ financial burden they could have.

This is because the cost of education has in the recent past sky-rated, making students from poor families not able to afford yet the banking systems have also failed to loan such students; therefore, engaging in part-time jobs makes such students meet their education expenses (Somoski 1). In addition, part-time jobs give students pocket money that they can spend on their own without nagging their parents with money.

Promotion of education

Students who undertake part-time jobs are able to upgrade their studies, making them understand whatever they learn in school even better. For instance, an accounting student who gets a part-time job in an accounting firm will be able to experience the theory learned in school practically hence having a better understanding of the course. The same applies to medicine, engineering, law, and biology students, among others (Pickett 1).

Accumulation of work experience

Engaging in part-time jobs enables the students to gain experience in their field of work hence boosting their resumes. This is important when it comes to job hunting after completion of studies.

Research has shown that students that have undertaken part-time jobs and gained relevant experience have the upper hand when it comes to getting jobs, unlike those that are just fresh from school. On the other hand, working part-time for recognized organizations increases one’s chances of landing a better job.

Time Management Skills

Having a part-time job helps students to acquire time management skills in the sense that they treasure every time they get and use it efficiently. This happens because their study time is now preoccupied with the job, thus having to restructure their schedule to fit in the study time, work time, leisure time, etc.

Learn the value of money

Most parents have complained that their children who are students do not know the value of money until they get jobs. Therefore, students who take part in part-time jobs while in school are in a position to understand the value of money, thus using it well in the future (Pickett 1). For instance, they are now able to refrain from impulse buying and resulting in smart shopping hence making their money last longer than before. This, as a result, makes them responsible adults even in the future.

Other benefits associated with part-time jobs are that the students get new ideas while in the workplace (Somoski 1). This happens mostly for challenging courses that need great minds, such as web design, whereby the students learn new technologies as soon as they are generated. Last but not least is the improvement in communication skills since the student interacts with different people at the workplace.

Disadvantages of Part-Time Jobs for Students

As mentioned above, the decision to engage in part-time jobs is wholly dependent on the student. This is because there are disadvantages that come in handy with a student engaging in part-time jobs.

Among them is the effect it has on students’ performance, given the less time allocated for study (Anti Essays 1). Other students may be overwhelmed by their greed for money and end up forgoing their studies to indulge in full-time jobs hence affecting their education.

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that the pros of part-time jobs for students outweigh the cons. From the discussion above, the benefits that a student gets on deciding to engage in part-time jobs are endless. The good thing is that the disadvantages attached to part-time jobs for students are manageable depending on the mind and focus of the students in their education and life.

But after all of his work when he gets time, we love to spend that time with us. Most of the time he takes us to a small picnic. I love the family picnic a lot. I really enjoy these.

My father is a friend to me. His behaviour is really good. Not only me, but he also behaves well with everyone. He is very popular in the society because of his helping mentality. Lots of people ask for help and he never refuses anyone. That’s why everyone loves him.

Why My Mother is the Best Mother? Yeah, I consider my mother as the best mother in the world. She is the best. There are so many reasons behind that. First of all, I think she has sacrificed her happiness because of us. She works a whole like a robot, but she never complains. We always try our best to help her.

My father wanted to keep a maid, but my mother is not agreeing to waste money. She is my teacher and guide. When I face any problem she helps me and solves the problem. She is a really highly educated woman. She understands the value of education, and that’s why she is trying her best to make us educated.

Conclusion: I love my parents very much. They are the best parents ever. I want my parents to live a long whole life. They also love me a lot.

Sydney Sweeney fans can thank PowerPoint for her Hollywood success

  • Sydney Sweeney says she convinced her parents to move to LA for her acting career with a PowerPoint presentation.
  • The "Euphoria" star told Who What Wear that the move was challenging in part due to LA's cost of living.
  • Sweeney isn't the only celebrity to use PowerPoint to convince their family to uproot their lives.

Insider Today

Sydney Sweeney says she used a PowerPoint presentation to convince her parents to move to Los Angeles in order to pursue her acting dreams.

The 26-year-old opened up about her career beginnings and recent projects in a Who What Wear interview published on Wednesday.

The actor, who grew up in Spokane, Washington, shared that she had persuaded her parents to move to LA when she was a teenager.

While her parents agreed to her plan, it wasn't an easy journey.

"It was hard because LA is very different from Spokane," Sweeney told Who What Wear. "The cost of a big city versus a small city is vastly different and challenging as well."

According to the latest 2022 estimates from the US Census Bureau , Spokane has a population of around 230,160 people, while LA has a population of over 3.8 million people.

Houses in Spokane have a median listing price of $472,500, as compared to $1.2 million in LA , per the latest data from real-estate platform Realtor.com.

Although Sweeney landed guest roles on popular shows such as "Grey's Anatomy" and "Pretty Little Liars," she didn't get her real break in Hollywood until later.

"My quote, unquote success didn't come until I was in my 20s," she said, adding that her parents didn't really get to experience her success with her because of their divorce .

Related stories

Despite that, the "Euphoria" star is finally in a position to thank and repay her family for their support.

"I recently paid off my mom's mortgage ," Sweeney said. "As a kid, I always dreamt of being able to take care of my parents, so that was a really big thing for me to be able to do."

This is not the first time that Sweeney has spoken about how she got into acting and how it has affected her family.

In a February 2022 interview with British GQ , Sweeney said she convinced her parents to let her act by writing a five-year business plan that detailed how her career would pan out.

"It said something along the lines of: if she auditioned for X short film, she'd be recruited by agents Y and Z, and then she'd booked this film where she'll meet this well-connected producer, and so on," GQ writer Iana Murray noted in Sweeney's profile.

In July 2022, Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter that her family had to sleep in a motel when they moved to LA because they were priced out of the housing market.

"We lived in one room. My mom and I shared a bed and my dad and little brother shared a couch," she said.

Sweeney's parents divorced and filed for bankruptcy just as her star was beginning to rise, the "Anyone But You" actor told Variety in an August 2023 interview.

"My parents sacrificed so much to support my dream, and they lost so much during it. I just felt a responsibility to show them that it was worth it," Sweeney told Variety.

Sweeney isn't the only celebrity to pitch her parents about going into acting using PowerPoint; Emma Stone did it too.

Stone told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017 that she made a presentation titled "Project Hollywood" in ninth grade that included a plan for her and her mom to move to LA where she could audition for shows while being home-schooled.

A representative for Sweeney didn't immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

We're Struggling To Survive After Putting Our Daughter in Part-Time Day Care

parent job essay

If you feel like your paycheck is never as big as your expenses , you are definitely not alone. Millions of families are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of living rises but salaries do not. Parents with young kids often feel stretched particularly thin because of the astronomical costs associated with child care in the United States. It leaves many people feeling emotionally and financially broken .

If parents can’t afford child care but can’t afford not to work either, what the heck are they supposed to do? Many parents are getting creative. They are maxing out daily to ensure they make as much money as possible while caring for their kids . At some point, something’s got to give. A mom shared her personal story with Business Insider , and it’s an extremely eye-opening look at what a lot of parents face each day.

More from CafeMom: I Refuse To Bring My 3-Year-Old to Day Care If He's Not Ready on Time & My Wife Is Furious

She’s balancing it all to make ends meet.

Victoria Marin explained that as a freelancer, her work is flexible but no less grueling. She often gets up at 4 a.m. to get a couple of solid hours in before her 3-year-old daughter is up for the day. The child is only in day care part time because the cost is astronomical, and although she and her partner both work, they still can’t afford full-time care.

“I can usually get in a couple of hours of paid work before my daughter wakes up. Then my attention shifts. On the days she goes to day care, I have six hours to get things — including housework and basic self-care — done before I have to go pick her up," she wrote. "On the days she doesn’t go to day care, I’m her primary caretaker, so I don’t get much done.”

Her daughter often skips naps, which means even less time for paid work during the day.

If she can’t work while her daughter is awake, Marin has to wait until her little girl sleeps. So she starts working again after 9 p.m. and works until midnight. With a 4 a.m. alarm, that’s only four hours on a good day, so she is emotionally and physically exhausted.

Talk to moms about mom stuff. And make money doing it.

There is no way out right now.

Although her daughter’s day care offers a sliding scale, it would still cost the family $31,000 annually in tuition, taking away nearly 25% of their total income. That’s why part-time care is the only solution for the family, and they pay $1,250 per month.

Marin explained, “Factoring in already high housing costs, relentlessly rising food prices, and unpredictable and unwieldy healthcare costs, we decided it made the most sense to minimize expenses where we could by enrolling in part-time childcare.”

In addition to hectic work schedules, the family also has debt.

Freelance work doesn’t come with a set schedule, which many people like, but it also doesn’t always come with steady income, which is a big drawback for a lot of folks. For Marin, that means she and her partner have accumulated debt that feels like an ever-growing hole.

She explained, “We are in mountains of debt , and we’ve often had to make hard choices about which bills to pay and which to delay, ultimately prioritizing food and childcare.” It all leaves her feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.

How are people supposed to do it?

It’s a vicious cycle. Although Marin and millions like her rely on child care, it’s become so expensive it’s crippling. Marin agrees with fair pay for employees and is passionate about finding a better way.

“The school we selected does provide livable wages to their staff. But should it come at the expense of attending families’ own financial stability? I believe childcare should be affordable and childcare workers should have livable wages, and the solution might be subsidies. This is common practice in many parts of the world,” she wrote.

Putin rounds up illegal migrants to send to the frontline in Ukraine as Vladimir exploits Moscow massacre anti-migrant backlash to find more cannon fodder

  • Vladimir Putin yesterday spoke on bringing 'sphere of migration under control'
  • Follows multiple arrests of Tajik nationals over Crocus Concert Hall terror attack

Vladimir Putin is rounding up illegal migrants in Russia  to fuel his bloody invasion of Ukraine, just days after four Tajik nationals were charged over the Crocus terror attack in Moscow, with migrant groups left fearing bloody retaliation.

Paddy wagons sporting the National Guard insignia arrived at a vast online shopping warehouse in Elektrostal, Moscow today, where thousands of migrant workers were reportedly forced to show their documents.

Checks were carried out by armed and masked Russian guards and military enlistment officers, before at least 40 people were hauled away from the Wildberries warehouse.

More operations in kind are said to be planned, as Putin seeks more cannon fodder for his ongoing war in Ukraine.

It comes just days after the Crocus City Hall atrocity, which led to the deaths of at least 140 people after gunmen stormed a packed concert venue in the capital and indiscriminately targeted civilians before setting the building on fire.

A number of men from Tajikistan have since been detained in connection to the attacks, which have been claimed by jihadist group Islamic State.

Friday's horror attack has been linked to a rise in tensions, with the BBC today reporting an increase in beatings and racism aimed at Central Asian migrants - and the embassy of Tajikistan in Russia warning citizens not to leave their homes unless necessary.

Some of the migrants detained today will reportedly face the choice of jail or expulsion - or fighting in Ukraine for Russia.

Migrants who have been granted Russian citizenship also express fears they may be called up.

'They check who is on the side of the military, and who is evading,' one said. 'Those who evade can be taken away against their will.'

'Whoever resists is beaten with sticks by the riot police,' said another worker.

A further 38 employees of the warehouse will undergo additional checks with law enforcement to 'clarify' information gathered already, the Wildberries company told state-owned news agency RIA.

It came a day after Putin spoke on the urgency of bringing the 'migration sphere ... under control' at a meeting with the board of the Prosecutor General's Office, RIA noted.

Putin reportedly ordered that measures be handled 'professionally and competently' to 'facilitate the adoption of legal, informed and fair decisions'.

Still, critics fear the atrocity in Moscow last week is already leading to discriminatory behaviour towards migrants living in Russia.

In Novgorod region, it has been prohibited to hire foreign workers in the transport sector.

State Duma deputy Dmitry Gusev has also called for a complete 'audit' of all labour migrants living in the country - as well as those who have recently received Russian citizenship.

In Moscow, a 29-year-old woman from Yakutia was surrounded by a hostile mob on the metro and subjected to vile racist abuse.

'Get the **** out of here,' she was told - even though she is a Russian citizen.

'Africa for blacks, cesspit for Caucasians! Hail Tesak!'

The group reportedly ally with neo-Nazi Maxim Martsinkevich, nicknamed Tesak, meaning Machete, who died from 'asphyxia' in a Russian jail in 2020.

The scared woman said: 'It was 6.30 pm. I was waiting for the train… Very young guys…came up to me.

'One of them, the most active one, took a metal bat out of his jacket and showed me.

'They surrounded me and began to humiliate me… They called me names from the platform based on my nationality and appearance.'

She said no-one came to her aid.

Two of those threatening her were detained today and face questioning.

On Telegram, migrants from Tajikistan have shared messages expressing fears the community in Russia will suffer for the Crocus attack, as reported by the BBC.

Sharing their concern over retributive attacks, one said: 'Please, God, let [the attackers] be Ukrainian instead.'

Russia's Federal Security Service, or the FSB, said it had arrested 11 people the day after the attack, including four suspected gunmen.

Moscow's Basmanny District Court identified the four suspects behind the attack as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, 32; Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, 30; Shamsidin Fariduni, 25; and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, 19.

The four men, identified as Tajik nationals, appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on terrorism charges and showed signs of severe beatings.

One appeared to be barely conscious during the hearing.

The men were charged with committing a group terrorist attack resulting in the death of others. The offence carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

They were all ordered to be held in pre-trial custody until May 22.

Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda admitted guilt after being charged, according to AP, citing court officials.

While Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, President Vladimir Putin has said the four men were arrested while trying to flee to Ukraine.

Kyiv denies any connection to the attack.

Putin has made no reference to ISIS' claims.

US intelligence also said after the attack it had information confirming ISIS was responsible for the attack.

Yesterday, head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov bizarrely pinned blame on the United States, Britain and Ukraine.

Speaking after the meeting with the board of the Prosecutor General's Office, he was asked whether the US, Britain and Ukraine were behind the terrorist attack, according to Russian news agency TASS .

'We believe that this is true. In any case, we are now talking about the factual information we have. This is general information, but they have a long record of this sort.'

'What is [Ukraine] expected to do to demonstrate its capability? It is expected to carry out sabotage and terrorist acts in the rear,' he continued.

'This is what both the chiefs of Ukraine's special services and the British special services are aiming at. US special services have repeatedly mentioned this, too.'

The Crocus Concert Hall was attacked by armed gunmen on March 22, when terrorists opened fire on civilians and set the auditorium on fire in Russia's deadliest attack in 20 years.

According to the latest data, 140 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the attack, the most recent dying in hospital today.

A total of 80 people injured in the attack remain hospitalized, the official added, and 205 others have sought outpatient medical assistance.

The Moscow Times reported today as many as 360 had been injured in the attack.

Three days before the attack, Putin denounced the U.S. Embassy's March 7 notice urging Americans to avoid crowds in Moscow , including concerts, calling it an attempt to frighten Russians and 'blackmail' the Kremlin ahead of the presidential election.

After Britain echoed the notice, Kremlin mouthpieces accused both of 'complicity' if terrorists did hit Moscow.

ISIS' news agency Amaq released sickening a 90-second selfie video of the attack that is too graphic for MailOnline to share

The news of a terror warning on March 7 came only hours after the FSB claimed to have thwarted an ISIS plot to slaughter Jews in a Moscow synagogue.

It was unclear whether the events are linked.

According to the FSB, a large cache of weapons and bomb parts were found during a raid on an Islamic State cell in Kaluga, southwest of the capital.

Russian state media reported militants had been gearing up to shoot Jewish worshippers at a synagogue in the capital before security officials stormed the premises and gunned them down.

'While being arrested, the terrorists put up armed resistance to the Russian FSB officers, and as a result were neutralised by return fire,' the Russian state-owned TASS news agency quoted the security service as saying in a statement.

Who Is Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder’s Husband? All About David Bluder

The coach of Caitlin Clark, Gabbie Marshall and more has been married to her husband for over four decades

parent job essay

Lisa Bluder/Instagram

Lisa Bluder has supported the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team during March Madness , but at home, she has a solid support system herself.

The head coach for Caitlin Clark , Gabbie Marshall and more Iowa players has been married to her husband David Bluder for almost four decades.

Together, they have three children, daughters Hannah and Emma and a son named David Jr., and affectionately refer to themselves as the “Bluder Bunch.”

Though David isn’t in the spotlight as much as Bluder is, the coach has given glimpses of their relationship and life on social media over the years.

In addition to sharing family photos, she has also championed his career, which has included publishing his novel The Great Gamble in 2020.

From how they were introduced to how they support each other, here’s everything to know about Bluder’s husband.

His parents introduced them

AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall

Bluder and David first connected during her senior year of high school in 1979 when she was working at his parents’ restaurant Country Kitchen in Marion, Iowa, per the Des Moines Register .

“My mom wrote a letter and said, ‘I’ve found a girlfriend for you,’” David recalled to the publication. “'She’s cute and bubbly and blonde.’ My mom was like the Fiddler on the Roof matchmaker.”

They got married in 1984

After David’s mom played Cupid, the couple tied the knot in 1984, according to the Des Moines Register . Their wedding came a year after Bluder graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, where she played for the women's basketball team, per the school’s athletic website .

They have three children

Since getting married, the couple has welcomed three children together, daughters Hannah and Emma and a son named David Jr.

Bluder’s eldest daughter Hannah followed in her footsteps by attending the University of Iowa, eventually graduating with a degree in sport and recreational management with a business emphasis, per her bio on the university website . Upon her graduation, she was hired as the director of operations for the women’s basketball team under her mother.

Like her sister, Emma studied at the University of Iowa, where she majored in elementary education . During her time at the university, she sang the National Anthem for a handful of Iowa Hawkeyes games, including the 2019 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament .

Bluder and David’s youngest, David Jr., also has the basketball gene. He is currently a junior at Grinnell College in Iowa, where he plays for the men’s basketball team as a guard, according to the school’s website .

He put his career on hold to take care of their kids after a life-changing accident

In 1997, David was driving to see the Hale Bopp comet when a driver crashed into his car, causing him to fly through his windshield and land in a ditch, according to the Des Moines Register .

The accident left David in a coma for three days. When he awoke, he decided to put his career on hold to prioritize taking care of his three children. A former banker at Iowa Transfer system, David gave up the world of finance to be a full-time dad.

He’s an author

Though David left his career in finance behind, he has followed other career pursuits in recent years. In 2020, he released a novel titled The Great Gamble , which centers around the “deceptive and corrupt universe of gambling and sports,” per the official logline .

Speaking with The Athletic about David’s novel, Bluder noted how proud she was of her husband as it “gave him a great sense of purpose.”

“He quit his job to kind of take care of our kids,” she noted. “And when we moved to Iowa City, he didn’t have as many connections here in Iowa City. So, I thought it was a good opportunity to kind of keep him focused on something, and it was exciting. It was something totally different and new and I really admired him for taking on something entirely new at this stage in our life. It’s really, I think, commendable.”

The novel centers around a basketball player for the University of Iowa, where Bluder coaches — and though she did make sure to give her boss a heads-up about the novel, she stressed to The Athletic that the story is entirely fictional.

“It’s a fictitious novel, and it’s stated right up front that it’s fictitious,” she explained. “I think that all the Iowa connections actually make it just more enjoyable for anybody from the state of Iowa or has ever visited Iowa City. I just think for Iowa people it just makes it more relatable."

(She did add, jokingly, "I’m glad it was a men’s player and not a women’s player.”)

Ethan Crumbley’s Parents Were Just Part of a Much Bigger Problem

A collage showing a diagram of a handgun and photo of a hand resting on someone’s shoulder.

By Elizabeth Spiers

Ms. Spiers, a contributing Opinion writer, is a journalist and digital media strategist.

James and Jennifer Crumbley never anticipated that their then-15-year-old son, Ethan, would use the 9-millimeter Sig Sauer handgun Mr. Crumbley had bought — ostensibly as an early Christmas present — to kill four students at a Michigan high school. At least that’s the argument their lawyers made in court before Ms. Crumbley, last month, and Mr. Crumbley, almost two weeks ago, were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in separate trials. Prosecutors argued that the Crumbleys did not do enough to secure the gun and ignored warning signs that Ethan was planning to use it.

After every mass shooting by a teenager at a school, there is an instinct to look to the shooter’s parents to understand what went wrong. In the case of the Crumbleys, this seems obvious: Ethan left disturbing journal entries fantasizing about shooting up the school, and stating that he had asked his parents for help with his mental health issues but didn’t get it. His father said the family had a gun safe but the safe’s combination was the default factory setting, 0-0-0.

One factor that’s gotten less attention, however, is how the Crumbleys’ attitudes and actions reflect an increasingly insidious gun culture that treats guns as instruments of defiance and rebellion rather than as a means of last resort.

I’ve been thinking about this case a lot because I grew up in the 1980s and ’90s in a rural part of the Deep South where almost everyone I knew had guns in the house, unsecured, and mental illness was stigmatized and often went untreated. Church was considered a superior venue for counseling, and only “crazy” people sought professional help. If the evidence for criminal negligence is a failure to lock up a gun and ignoring signs of mental illness, many of the adults I grew up around would have been (and still would be) vulnerable to the same charges as the Crumbleys.

It’s convenient and comforting for many people to believe that if it had been their child, they’d have prevented this tragedy. But prison visiting rooms are full of good, diligent parents who never thought their kid would be capable of landing there.

My parents didn’t own a gun safe, but kept guns hidden away from us, which, like many gun owners at the time, they thought of as “secured.” The men in my family were all hunters and the guns they kept were hunting rifles, not AR-15s. (You can’t feed a family with deer meat that’s been blown to bits.) I knew my parents kept a handgun, too, but it was never shown to us, or treated as a shiny new toy.

Gun culture was different then. It would have never occurred to my parents to acquire an entire arsenal of guns and display them prominently around the house, as some people now do, or ludicrously suggest that Jesus Christ would have carried one . They did not, as more than a few Republican politicians have done, send out Christmas photos of their children posing with weapons designed explicitly to kill people at an age when those children likely still believed Santa existed. Open carry was legal, but if you were to walk into the local barbecue joint with a semiautomatic rifle on your back emblazoned with fake military insignia, people would think you were creepy and potentially dangerous, not an exemplar of masculinity and patriotism.

All of these things happen now with regularity, and they’re considered normal by gun owners who believe that any kind of control infringes on their Second Amendment rights. Children are introduced at a young age to guns like the Sig Sauer that Ethan Crumbley used. They’re taught to view guns as emblematic of freedom and the right to self-defense — two concepts that have been expanded to include whatever might justify unlimited accumulation of weapons.

“Freedom” is short for not being told what to do, even though the law very much dictates how and when guns should be used. “Self-defense” is often talked about as a justifiable precaution in the event of home invasion, though home invasions are as rare as four-leaf clovers and do not require an arsenal unless the invader is a small army. (It’s also worth noting that basic home security systems are far less expensive than many popular guns, which suggests that at the very least, some gun owners may be intentionally opting for the most violent potential scenario.) Most important, too many children are taught that guns confer power and can and should be used to intimidate other people. (Relatedly, any time I write about gun control, at least one gun owner emails to say he’d love to shoot me, which is not exactly evidence of responsible gun ownership.)

Mass shooters often begin with a grievance — toward certain populations, individuals they feel wronged by, society at large — and escalate their behavior from fantasizing about violence to planning actual attacks. A study from 2019 suggests that feeling inadequate may make gun owners more inclined toward violence. In the study, gun owners were given a task to perform and then told that they failed it. Later they were asked a number of questions, including whether they would be willing to kill someone who broke into their home, even if the intruder was leaving. “We found that the experience of failure increased participants’ view of guns as a means of empowerment,” wrote one researcher , “and enhanced their readiness to shoot and kill a home intruder.”

The study hypothesized that these gun owners “may be seeking a compensatory means to interact more effectively with their environment.”

Good parents model healthy interactions all the time. If their kids are struggling with a sense of inferiority or are having trouble dealing with failure, we teach them self-confidence and resilience. Parents who treat guns as a mechanism for feeling more significant and powerful are modeling an extremely dangerous way to interact with their environment.

What’s particularly hypocritical here is that the most strident defenders of this culture skew conservative and talk a lot about what isn’t appropriate for children and teenagers. What they think is inappropriate often includes educating kids about sex, about the fact that some people are gay or transsexual and about racism. It’s a perverse state of affairs: Exposing children to simple facts is dangerous, but exposing them to machines designed to kill is not. You can’t get your driver’s license until you’re a teenager, or buy cigarettes and alcohol until you’re 21, but much earlier than that, kids can, with adult supervision, legally learn how to end someone’s life.

Parents can’t ensure that their child won’t ever feel inferior or disempowered, or even in some cases become delusional or filled with rage. Teenagers do things that their parents would never anticipate every day, even if they’re close and communicative. Some develop serious drug habits or become radicalized into extremism or take their own lives.

One thing parents can ensure is that their children cannot get access to a gun in their house. The only foolproof way to do that is to ensure that there’s no gun in the house to begin with. Barring that, parents can make sure they are not reinforcing a toxic gun culture that says that displaying and threatening to use lethal machines is a reasonable way to deal with anger or adversity. That message makes the idea of killing someone seem almost ordinary.

That doesn’t prevent school shooters; it primes them.

People Are On Their Knees Begging Nepo Babies To Acknowledge Their Privilege After Zooey Deschanel Became The Latest Star To Insist That Her Parents Didn’t Help Her Career

"My mom would coach me when I didn’t have an acting coach," Zooey went on to say. "I would have so many great discussions about film and filmmaking with my dad."

It’s fair to say that nepo baby discourse really entered the mainstream at the end of 2022, when New York Magazine published an article breaking down the “nepo-baby boom” in Hollywood.

Leslie Mann, Maude Apatow and Judd Apatow on the red carpet

The article dissected the rise of celebrity children such as Maude Apatow and Lily-Rose Depp , and the accompanying attention-grabbing cover immediately went viral.

And although more than a year has passed since then, the conversation around nepotism in the celebrity world is still going strong in the year 2024.

In February, Dakota Johnson sparked backlash when she called the nepo baby debate “lame” as well as “incredibly annoying and boring.” If you didn’t know, the Madame Web star is the daughter of famous actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

In March, actor Ryan Phillippe admitted that he gets annoyed and “offended by” nepotism comments as he discussed his and Reese Witherspoon ’s children’s decision to enter the showbiz world.

While 20-year-old Deacon is pursuing a music career, 24-year-old Ava is keen to “figure out” a career in acting like her famous parents.

And Zooey Deschanel has now stepped up to be the face of nepotism discourse in April, with the New Girl and Elf star insisting that her parents did not make it easier for her to establish a career in acting.

If you’re wondering, Zooey’s dad is Caleb Deschanel, a cinematographer who has worked on everything from Titanic to The Godfather , receiving six Academy Award nominations in the process.

Her mom is Twin Peaks ’ star Mary Jo Deschanel née Weir, and Zooey’s sister, Emily Deschanel is also a successful actor, starring in Bones and Spider-Man 2 , among other projects.

But Zooey is confident that she and her sister do not owe their careers in the industry to their mom and dad, saying on The School of Greatness podcast: “It’s funny because people be like, ‘Oh, nepotism’, I’m like, ‘no.’”

“My dad’s a DP [director of photography, which is another term for cinematographer],” she continued. “No one’s getting jobs because their dad’s a DP. It’s definitely not [nepotism.]”

Zooey went on to admit that having parents in the industry was a huge help creatively, explaining: “My mom would coach me when I didn’t have an acting coach, she would help me, read lines with me. She’d be so supportive.”

“I would have so many great discussions about film and filmmaking with my dad. They both would help me. My dad would also read lines with me,” she continued, before acknowledging that “automatically” having a “community” was a great help for her acting pursuit.

Still, some have been left unimpressed by how dismissive Zooey was about her father’s role in her career as they expressed their exasperation at nepo babies repeatedly failing to acknowledge the privilege that comes with their parents having connections in the industry.

Sharing Zooey’s quote to X, formerly Twitter, one person wrote : “I think what gets lost every time someone talks about this is a refusal to acknowledge that growing up around the industry *does* give you more insights and connections into how to break in than someone who grows up in Iowa with a dad who is a mailman.”

“why don’t nepo babies realize that your parent simply being able to connect you to one person or get you into the right room and get you even the smallest job to get a foot in the door makes you a nepo baby??” another asked . “your parent doesn’t have to be scorsese to make you a nepo baby.”

“Your parents aint work that damn hard for you to deny the step up they gave you,” somebody else tweeted .

One more wrote : “There’s nothing wrong with being a nepo baby especially when you’re talented but don’t act like your parents didn’t put you in a better position to succeed than others due to their connections in the industry.”

“I love zooey but i'll never understand celebs treating the phrase nepo baby like a slur,” another user said . “it’s actually really cool to have successful parents when you're humble and gracious about it!!!!”

Meanwhile, others admitted that Zooey’s recent comments were the first time they’d even heard about her nepotism. One person joked : “i had no idea zooey was a nepo baby and now the only reason i know is because she's acting like a nepo baby in defence of being a nepo baby and that makes her a loser.”

Zooey has not publicly acknowledged the response to her comments, but we will let you know if she does!
