2. किताब के plus points को बताएं

3. किताब के negative points को लिखें

किताब के Good points को लिखने के बाद आपको उन points को लिखना चाहिए , जो आपको किताब के बारे में अच्छा न लगा हो । इसमें आप सभी negative points को लिख सकते हैं । Book review करते समय हमेशा critical रहें और ईमानदारी दिखाएं । आपकी किताब समीक्षा किसी भी पुस्तक के sales को घटा या बढ़ा सकती है इसलिए plz be honest !

Negative points को लिखते समय भी आप निम्न बिंदुओं पर गौर करें –

4. अपने समीक्षा को round up करें

‘निर्मला’ मुंशी प्रेमचंद द्वारा रचित एक प्रसिद्द हिंदी उपन्यास है ! जिसका प्रकाशन सन 1927 में हुआ था ! प्रेमचंद जी द्वारा यह उपन्यास दहेज़ प्रथा और अनमेल विवाह को आधार बनाकर लिखा गया है ! इस उपन्यास की मुख्य पात्र ‘निर्मला’ नाम की एक 15 साल की सुन्दर और सुशिल लड़की है ! निर्मला की शादी से पहले ही किसी कारणवश उसके पिता की मृत्यु हो जाती है , जिससे उनके परिवार पर दुखो का पहाड़ टूट पड़ता है !

दहेज देने की क्षमता न होने के कारण निर्मला का विवाह एक अधेड़ पुरुष के साथ कर दिया जाता है जिसके पहले से 3 लड़के थे और उनकी पहली पत्नी की मौत हो चुकी होती है !

निर्मला चरित्र की पवित्र होने के बावजूद भी उसे समाज और अपने पति की गलत नजरो का शिकार होना पड़ता है ! इससे उन्हें समाज में अनादर का सामना करना पड़ता है ! इस प्रकार निर्मला विभिन्न परिस्थितियों को सहती हुई अंत में मृत्यु को प्राप्त होती है !

निर्मला उपन्यास में मुंशी प्रेमचंद ने दहेज़ प्रथा और अनमेल विवाह का मार्मिक चित्रण किया है ! इस उपन्यास में बिना सहमती के विवाह और दहेज़ के कारण होने वाले दुष्प्रभावो का सटीकता से वर्णन किया गया है ! साथ ही एक नारी की सहिष्णुता का भी बखूबी वर्णन किया गया है ! एक नारी ही है जो तमाम बुराइयों और विपरीत परिस्थितियों का बखूबी सामना कर सकती है !

अगर हम आज के भारतीय समाज की बात करे तो कई निर्मला ऐसी मिल जाएगी जिन्हें समाज में कठिन परिस्थितियों का सामना करना पड़ता है ! कई महिलाये अनमेल विवाह और दहेज़ के कारण मौत का शिकार हो जाती है !

प्रेमचंद जी ने निर्मला उपन्यास की भाषा को काफी सरल और समझने योग्य बनाया है ! इस उपन्यास में निर्मला को मुख्या पात्र बनाया गया है ! यह उपन्यास महिलाओ के संघर्ष और सहिष्णुता को दिखाता है ! कैसे एक महिला चरित्रवान होते हुए भी उसे समाज की गलत निगाहों का सामना करना पड़ता है ! इस उपन्यास में कई किरदारों की मौत हो जाती है ! निर्मला को भी विभिन्न दुखो का सामना करना पड़ता है , इसके बावजूद भी वह हिम्मत नहीं हारती है और परेशानियों का डटकर सामना करती है !

एक दिन ऐसा आता है जब वह हालातो का सामना करते – करते इस दुनियां को सदा के लिए अलविदा कह जाती है ! दोस्तों प्रेमचंद जी का यह उपन्यास एक नारी की सहिष्णुता को दिखाता है ! अगर आप नारी की सहिष्णुता और सहनशीलता को जानना और समझना चाहते है तो निर्मल उपन्यास को एक बार अवश्य पढ़े !

'The Greatest Hindi Stories Ever Told' book review: Treasure Trove of Brilliance

The Greatest Hindi Stories Ever Told, selected and translated by Poonam Saxena, definitively makes good on its boast. This collection is a labour of love from Saxena, who confesses herself to be a devourer of Hindi Literature.

Regional writers, barring a few who have enjoyed universal acclaim, have long been denied their fair share of appreciation, admiration and popularity. It is a crying shame, because there is a treasure trove of blinding talent, lurking in the nooks and crannies of the artistic world, waiting to be discovered.

Translators who work hard to amend this sad situation deserve to be commended for doing their part to give deserving stories the love and exposure they so richly deserve in addition to enhancing their reach in pop culture.

The stories themselves, lovingly gathered and narrated, are a treat for readers who are unfamiliar with the bountiful treasures of Hindi Literature. Saxena has selected 25 stories featuring the best work from an earlier time as well as modern talents. The stories from the 'Nayi Kahani movement', which occurred in post-Independent India and mirrored a variety of social ills, are particularly harrowing and thought-provoking.

Chandradhar Sharma Guleri's 'She Had Said So' written over a 100 years ago is a timeless tale of selflessness and sacrifice. Set during World War I, it is about Indian soldiers carted off to die, yearning for home, hearth and delicious mangoes while fighting a war on the bidding of their white conquerors.

Stories set in the aftermath of the Partition, communal riots, and war chronicling dark and bloody chapters in the history of India and Pakistan such as 'The Times Have Changed' by Krishna Sobti, 'Lord of the Rubble' by Mohan Rakesh - which made me bawl uncontrollably when old Ghani mian  returns to the home he built which has been reduced to ashes along with the rest of his family - and 'War' by Shaani capture the horror and pathos of those terrifying times.

They fill the reader with remorse for the hatred and intolerance that was and is reflective of the sundered bonds between children of what was once the same land. Poverty and caste discrimination is a recurrent theme in some of the stories which seek to highlight the widening chasms between the privileged and unfortunates which leaves one with a bitter taste in the mouth and a stricken conscience.

Premchand's 'The Thakur's Well' is a hard-hitting tale of poor Gangi who is willing to risk life and limb to slake her husband's thirst but will have nothing to show for her bravery simply because society will never let her rise above her status as a low caste member.

Women's exploitation as well as the untold hardships they are forced to endure are beautifully portrayed in stories like the chilling 'Where Lakshmi is Held Captive' by Rajendra Yadav.

It is one of those stories that you will not forget or forgive in a hurry, given the scale of injustice wreaked by a miserly old man on his own daughter and Agyeya's 'Gangrene', a tale about the tortuous monotony of domestic chores that drain a woman of her vitality. Krishna Baldev Vaid's 'Escape', Yashpal's 'Phoolo's Kurta' and 'The Human Measure' explore the same trope with a touch of macabre humour.

The social evil that is ageism is also highlighted in gripping yarns like Bhisham Sahni's 'A Feast for the Boss', where a son wonders what to do with his decrepit old mum when his white boss visits, and Usha Priyamvada's 'The Homecoming' where Gajadhar Babu realises that his family has little use for him on retirement.

Asghar Wajahat's 'The Spirits of Shah Alam Camp' and Uday Prakash's 'Tirich' deserve special mention too, though both are going to haunt my nightmares simply for being undeniably brilliant. In fact, every single story in this lovely collection is replete with merit, making for some very enjoyable reading and truly delicious experiences.

A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analysed based on content, style, and merit. It can be a primary source opinion piece, summary review or scholarly review. Books can be reviewed for printed periodicals, magazines and newspapers, as school work, or for book web sites on the internet. A book review's length may vary from a single paragraph to a substantial essay. Such a review may evaluate the book on the basis of personal taste. Reviewers may use the occasion of a book review for a display of learning or to promulgate their own ideas on the topic of a fiction or non-fiction work.

The basic purpose of a book review, as one sees it, is to help readers decide whether to read the book themselves. A book review should identify the central idea of the book, give the reader some indication of the author's style, approach, or premises, and then offer an overall evaluation. The reviewer should tell the reader what the book covers, but in a selective way. If you're the reviewer, don't recap the entire book. And if it is a work of fiction that you are reviewing, certainly don't spoil the ending or reveal any surprises.

17 book review examples to help you write the perfect review.

It’s an exciting time to be a book reviewer. Once confined to print newspapers and journals, reviews now dot many corridors of the Internet — forever helping others discover their next great read. That said, every book reviewer will face a familiar panic: how can you do justice to a great book in just a thousand words?

As you know, the best way to learn how to do something is by immersing yourself in it. Luckily, the Internet (i.e. Goodreads and other review sites , in particular) has made book reviews more accessible than ever — which means that there are a lot of book reviews examples out there for you to view!

In this post, we compiled 17 prototypical book review examples in multiple genres to help you figure out how to write the perfect review . If you want to jump straight to the examples, you can skip the next section. Otherwise, let’s first check out what makes up a good review.

What must a book review contain?

Like all works of art, no two book reviews will be identical. But fear not: there are a few guidelines for any aspiring book reviewer to follow. Most book reviews, for instance, are less than 1,500 words long, with the sweet spot hitting somewhere around the 1,000-word mark. (However, this may vary depending on the platform on which you’re writing, as we’ll see later.)

In addition, all reviews share some universal elements, as shown in our book review templates . These include:

• A review will offer a concise plot summary of the book. 
• A book review will offer an evaluation of the work. 
• A book review will offer a recommendation for the audience. 

If these are the basic ingredients that make up a book review, it’s the tone and style with which the book reviewer writes that brings the extra panache. This will differ from platform to platform, of course. A book review on Goodreads, for instance, will be much more informal and personal than a book review on Kirkus Reviews, as it is catering to a different audience. However, at the end of the day, the goal of all book reviews is to give the audience the tools to determine whether or not they’d like to read the book themselves.

Keeping that in mind, let’s proceed to some book review examples to put all of this in action.

Book review examples for fiction books

Since story is king in the world of fiction, it probably won’t come as any surprise to learn that a book review for a novel will concentrate on how well the story was told .

That said, book reviews in all genres follow the same basic formula that we discussed earlier. In these examples, you’ll be able to see how book reviewers on different platforms expertly intertwine the plot summary and their personal opinions of the book to produce a clear, informative, and concise review.

Examples of literary fiction book reviews

Kirkus Reviews reviews Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man :

An extremely powerful story of a young Southern Negro, from his late high school days through three years of college to his life in Harlem.

His early training prepared him for a life of humility before white men, but through injustices- large and small, he came to realize that he was an "invisible man". People saw in him only a reflection of their preconceived ideas of what he was, denied his individuality, and ultimately did not see him at all. This theme, which has implications far beyond the obvious racial parallel, is skillfully handled. The incidents of the story are wholly absorbing. The boy's dismissal from college because of an innocent mistake, his shocked reaction to the anonymity of the North and to Harlem, his nightmare experiences on a one-day job in a paint factory and in the hospital, his lightning success as the Harlem leader of a communistic organization known as the Brotherhood, his involvement in black versus white and black versus black clashes and his disillusion and understanding of his invisibility- all climax naturally in scenes of violence and riot, followed by a retreat which is both literal and figurative. Parts of this experience may have been told before, but never with such freshness, intensity and power.

This is Ellison's first novel, but he has complete control of his story and his style. Watch it.

Lyndsey reviews George Orwell’s 1984 on Goodreads:

YOU. ARE. THE. DEAD. Oh my God. I got the chills so many times toward the end of this book. It completely blew my mind. It managed to surpass my high expectations AND be nothing at all like I expected. Or in Newspeak "Double Plus Good." Let me preface this with an apology. If I sound stunningly inarticulate at times in this review, I can't help it. My mind is completely fried.

This book is like the dystopian Lord of the Rings, with its richly developed culture and economics, not to mention a fully developed language called Newspeak, or rather more of the anti-language, whose purpose is to limit speech and understanding instead of to enhance and expand it. The world-building is so fully fleshed out and spine-tinglingly terrifying that it's almost as if George travelled to such a place, escaped from it, and then just wrote it all down.

I read Fahrenheit 451 over ten years ago in my early teens. At the time, I remember really wanting to read 1984, although I never managed to get my hands on it. I'm almost glad I didn't. Though I would not have admitted it at the time, it would have gone over my head. Or at the very least, I wouldn't have been able to appreciate it fully. […]

The New York Times reviews Lisa Halliday’s Asymmetry :

Three-quarters of the way through Lisa Halliday’s debut novel, “Asymmetry,” a British foreign correspondent named Alistair is spending Christmas on a compound outside of Baghdad. His fellow revelers include cameramen, defense contractors, United Nations employees and aid workers. Someone’s mother has FedExed a HoneyBaked ham from Maine; people are smoking by the swimming pool. It is 2003, just days after Saddam Hussein’s capture, and though the mood is optimistic, Alistair is worrying aloud about the ethics of his chosen profession, wondering if reporting on violence doesn’t indirectly abet violence and questioning why he’d rather be in a combat zone than reading a picture book to his son. But every time he returns to London, he begins to “spin out.” He can’t go home. “You observe what people do with their freedom — what they don’t do — and it’s impossible not to judge them for it,” he says.

The line, embedded unceremoniously in the middle of a page-long paragraph, doubles, like so many others in “Asymmetry,” as literary criticism. Halliday’s novel is so strange and startlingly smart that its mere existence seems like commentary on the state of fiction. One finishes “Asymmetry” for the first or second (or like this reader, third) time and is left wondering what other writers are not doing with their freedom — and, like Alistair, judging them for it.

Despite its title, “Asymmetry” comprises two seemingly unrelated sections of equal length, appended by a slim and quietly shocking coda. Halliday’s prose is clean and lean, almost reportorial in the style of W. G. Sebald, and like the murmurings of a shy person at a cocktail party, often comic only in single clauses. It’s a first novel that reads like the work of an author who has published many books over many years. […]

Emily W. Thompson reviews Michael Doane's The Crossing on Reedsy Discovery :

In Doane’s debut novel, a young man embarks on a journey of self-discovery with surprising results.

An unnamed protagonist (The Narrator) is dealing with heartbreak. His love, determined to see the world, sets out for Portland, Oregon. But he’s a small-town boy who hasn’t traveled much. So, the Narrator mourns her loss and hides from life, throwing himself into rehabbing an old motorcycle. Until one day, he takes a leap; he packs his bike and a few belongings and heads out to find the Girl.

Following in the footsteps of Jack Kerouac and William Least Heat-Moon, Doane offers a coming of age story about a man finding himself on the backroads of America. Doane’s a gifted writer with fluid prose and insightful observations, using The Narrator’s personal interactions to illuminate the diversity of the United States.

The Narrator initially sticks to the highways, trying to make it to the West Coast as quickly as possible. But a hitchhiker named Duke convinces him to get off the beaten path and enjoy the ride. “There’s not a place that’s like any other,” [39] Dukes contends, and The Narrator realizes he’s right. Suddenly, the trip is about the journey, not just the destination. The Narrator ditches his truck and traverses the deserts and mountains on his bike. He destroys his phone, cutting off ties with his past and living only in the moment.

As he crosses the country, The Narrator connects with several unique personalities whose experiences and views deeply impact his own. Duke, the complicated cowboy and drifter, who opens The Narrator’s eyes to a larger world. Zooey, the waitress in Colorado who opens his heart and reminds him that love can be found in this big world. And Rosie, The Narrator’s sweet landlady in Portland, who helps piece him back together both physically and emotionally.

This supporting cast of characters is excellent. Duke, in particular, is wonderfully nuanced and complicated. He’s a throwback to another time, a man without a cell phone who reads Sartre and sleeps under the stars. Yet he’s also a grifter with a “love ‘em and leave ‘em” attitude that harms those around him. It’s fascinating to watch The Narrator wrestle with Duke’s behavior, trying to determine which to model and which to discard.

Doane creates a relatable protagonist in The Narrator, whose personal growth doesn’t erase his faults. His willingness to hit the road with few resources is admirable, and he’s prescient enough to recognize the jealousy of those who cannot or will not take the leap. His encounters with new foods, places, and people broaden his horizons. Yet his immaturity and selfishness persist. He tells Rosie she’s been a good mother to him but chooses to ignore the continuing concern from his own parents as he effectively disappears from his old life.

Despite his flaws, it’s a pleasure to accompany The Narrator on his physical and emotional journey. The unexpected ending is a fitting denouement to an epic and memorable road trip.

The Book Smugglers review Anissa Gray’s The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls :

I am still dipping my toes into the literally fiction pool, finding what works for me and what doesn’t. Books like The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray are definitely my cup of tea.

Althea and Proctor Cochran had been pillars of their economically disadvantaged community for years – with their local restaurant/small market and their charity drives. Until they are found guilty of fraud for stealing and keeping most of the money they raised and sent to jail. Now disgraced, their entire family is suffering the consequences, specially their twin teenage daughters Baby Vi and Kim.  To complicate matters even more: Kim was actually the one to call the police on her parents after yet another fight with her mother. […]

Examples of children’s and YA fiction book reviews

The Book Hookup reviews Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give :

♥ Quick Thoughts and Rating: 5 stars! I can’t imagine how challenging it would be to tackle the voice of a movement like Black Lives Matter, but I do know that Thomas did it with a finesse only a talented author like herself possibly could. With an unapologetically realistic delivery packed with emotion, The Hate U Give is a crucially important portrayal of the difficulties minorities face in our country every single day. I have no doubt that this book will be met with resistance by some (possibly many) and slapped with a “controversial” label, but if you’ve ever wondered what it was like to walk in a POC’s shoes, then I feel like this is an unflinchingly honest place to start.

In Angie Thomas’s debut novel, Starr Carter bursts on to the YA scene with both heart-wrecking and heartwarming sincerity. This author is definitely one to watch.

♥ Review: The hype around this book has been unquestionable and, admittedly, that made me both eager to get my hands on it and terrified to read it. I mean, what if I was to be the one person that didn’t love it as much as others? (That seems silly now because of how truly mesmerizing THUG was in the most heartbreakingly realistic way.) However, with the relevancy of its summary in regards to the unjust predicaments POC currently face in the US, I knew this one was a must-read, so I was ready to set my fears aside and dive in. That said, I had an altogether more personal, ulterior motive for wanting to read this book. […]

The New York Times reviews Melissa Albert’s The Hazel Wood :

Alice Crewe (a last name she’s chosen for herself) is a fairy tale legacy: the granddaughter of Althea Proserpine, author of a collection of dark-as-night fairy tales called “Tales From the Hinterland.” The book has a cult following, and though Alice has never met her grandmother, she’s learned a little about her through internet research. She hasn’t read the stories, because her mother, Ella Proserpine, forbids it.

Alice and Ella have moved from place to place in an attempt to avoid the “bad luck” that seems to follow them. Weird things have happened. As a child, Alice was kidnapped by a man who took her on a road trip to find her grandmother; he was stopped by the police before they did so. When at 17 she sees that man again, unchanged despite the years, Alice panics. Then Ella goes missing, and Alice turns to Ellery Finch, a schoolmate who’s an Althea Proserpine superfan, for help in tracking down her mother. Not only has Finch read every fairy tale in the collection, but handily, he remembers them, sharing them with Alice as they journey to the mysterious Hazel Wood, the estate of her now-dead grandmother, where they hope to find Ella.

“The Hazel Wood” starts out strange and gets stranger, in the best way possible. (The fairy stories Finch relays, which Albert includes as their own chapters, are as creepy and evocative as you’d hope.) Albert seamlessly combines contemporary realism with fantasy, blurring the edges in a way that highlights that place where stories and real life convene, where magic contains truth and the world as it appears is false, where just about anything can happen, particularly in the pages of a very good book. It’s a captivating debut. […]

James reviews Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight, Moon on Goodreads:

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is one of the books that followers of my blog voted as a must-read for our Children's Book August 2018 Readathon. Come check it out and join the next few weeks!

This picture book was such a delight. I hadn't remembered reading it when I was a child, but it might have been read to me... either way, it was like a whole new experience! It's always so difficult to convince a child to fall asleep at night. I don't have kids, but I do have a 5-month-old puppy who whines for 5 minutes every night when he goes in his cage/crate (hopefully he'll be fully housebroken soon so he can roam around when he wants). I can only imagine! I babysat a lot as a teenager and I have tons of younger cousins, nieces, and nephews, so I've been through it before, too. This was a believable experience, and it really helps show kids how to relax and just let go when it's time to sleep.

The bunny's are adorable. The rhymes are exquisite. I found it pretty fun, but possibly a little dated given many of those things aren't normal routines anymore. But the lessons to take from it are still powerful. Loved it! I want to sample some more books by this fine author and her illustrators.

Publishers Weekly reviews Elizabeth Lilly’s Geraldine :

This funny, thoroughly accomplished debut opens with two words: “I’m moving.” They’re spoken by the title character while she swoons across her family’s ottoman, and because Geraldine is a giraffe, her full-on melancholy mode is quite a spectacle. But while Geraldine may be a drama queen (even her mother says so), it won’t take readers long to warm up to her. The move takes Geraldine from Giraffe City, where everyone is like her, to a new school, where everyone else is human. Suddenly, the former extrovert becomes “That Giraffe Girl,” and all she wants to do is hide, which is pretty much impossible. “Even my voice tries to hide,” she says, in the book’s most poignant moment. “It’s gotten quiet and whispery.” Then she meets Cassie, who, though human, is also an outlier (“I’m that girl who wears glasses and likes MATH and always organizes her food”), and things begin to look up.

Lilly’s watercolor-and-ink drawings are as vividly comic and emotionally astute as her writing; just when readers think there are no more ways for Geraldine to contort her long neck, this highly promising talent comes up with something new.

Examples of genre fiction book reviews

Karlyn P reviews Nora Roberts’ Dark Witch , a paranormal romance novel , on Goodreads:

4 stars. Great world-building, weak romance, but still worth the read.

I hesitate to describe this book as a 'romance' novel simply because the book spent little time actually exploring the romance between Iona and Boyle. Sure, there IS a romance in this novel. Sprinkled throughout the book are a few scenes where Iona and Boyle meet, chat, wink at each, flirt some more, sleep together, have a misunderstanding, make up, and then profess their undying love. Very formulaic stuff, and all woven around the more important parts of this book.

The meat of this book is far more focused on the story of the Dark witch and her magically-gifted descendants living in Ireland. Despite being weak on the romance, I really enjoyed it. I think the book is probably better for it, because the romance itself was pretty lackluster stuff.

I absolutely plan to stick with this series as I enjoyed the world building, loved the Ireland setting, and was intrigued by all of the secondary characters. However, If you read Nora Roberts strictly for the romance scenes, this one might disappoint. But if you enjoy a solid background story with some dark magic and prophesies, you might enjoy it as much as I did.

I listened to this one on audio, and felt the narration was excellent.

Emily May reviews R.F. Kuang’s The Poppy Wars , an epic fantasy novel , on Goodreads:

“But I warn you, little warrior. The price of power is pain.”

Holy hell, what did I just read??

➽ A fantasy military school

➽ A rich world based on modern Chinese history

➽ Shamans and gods

➽ Detailed characterization leading to unforgettable characters

➽ Adorable, opium-smoking mentors

That's a basic list, but this book is all of that and SO MUCH MORE. I know 100% that The Poppy War will be one of my best reads of 2018.

Isn't it just so great when you find one of those books that completely drags you in, makes you fall in love with the characters, and demands that you sit on the edge of your seat for every horrific, nail-biting moment of it? This is one of those books for me. And I must issue a serious content warning: this book explores some very dark themes. Proceed with caution (or not at all) if you are particularly sensitive to scenes of war, drug use and addiction, genocide, racism, sexism, ableism, self-harm, torture, and rape (off-page but extremely horrific).

Because, despite the fairly innocuous first 200 pages, the title speaks the truth: this is a book about war. All of its horrors and atrocities. It is not sugar-coated, and it is often graphic. The "poppy" aspect refers to opium, which is a big part of this book. It is a fantasy, but the book draws inspiration from the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Rape of Nanking.

Crime Fiction Lover reviews Jessica Barry’s Freefall , a crime novel:

In some crime novels, the wrongdoing hits you between the eyes from page one. With others it’s a more subtle process, and that’s OK too. So where does Freefall fit into the sliding scale?

In truth, it’s not clear. This is a novel with a thrilling concept at its core. A woman survives plane crash, then runs for her life. However, it is the subtleties at play that will draw you in like a spider beckoning to an unwitting fly.

Like the heroine in Sharon Bolton’s Dead Woman Walking, Allison is lucky to be alive. She was the only passenger in a private plane, belonging to her fiancé, Ben, who was piloting the expensive aircraft, when it came down in woodlands in the Colorado Rockies. Ally is also the only survivor, but rather than sitting back and waiting for rescue, she is soon pulling together items that may help her survive a little longer – first aid kit, energy bars, warm clothes, trainers – before fleeing the scene. If you’re hearing the faint sound of alarm bells ringing, get used to it. There’s much, much more to learn about Ally before this tale is over.

Kirkus Reviews reviews Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One , a science-fiction novel :

Video-game players embrace the quest of a lifetime in a virtual world; screenwriter Cline’s first novel is old wine in new bottles.

The real world, in 2045, is the usual dystopian horror story. So who can blame Wade, our narrator, if he spends most of his time in a virtual world? The 18-year-old, orphaned at 11, has no friends in his vertical trailer park in Oklahoma City, while the OASIS has captivating bells and whistles, and it’s free. Its creator, the legendary billionaire James Halliday, left a curious will. He had devised an elaborate online game, a hunt for a hidden Easter egg. The finder would inherit his estate. Old-fashioned riddles lead to three keys and three gates. Wade, or rather his avatar Parzival, is the first gunter (egg-hunter) to win the Copper Key, first of three.

Halliday was obsessed with the pop culture of the 1980s, primarily the arcade games, so the novel is as much retro as futurist. Parzival’s great strength is that he has absorbed all Halliday’s obsessions; he knows by heart three essential movies, crossing the line from geek to freak. His most formidable competitors are the Sixers, contract gunters working for the evil conglomerate IOI, whose goal is to acquire the OASIS. Cline’s narrative is straightforward but loaded with exposition. It takes a while to reach a scene that crackles with excitement: the meeting between Parzival (now world famous as the lead contender) and Sorrento, the head of IOI. The latter tries to recruit Parzival; when he fails, he issues and executes a death threat. Wade’s trailer is demolished, his relatives killed; luckily Wade was not at home. Too bad this is the dramatic high point. Parzival threads his way between more ’80s games and movies to gain the other keys; it’s clever but not exciting. Even a romance with another avatar and the ultimate “epic throwdown” fail to stir the blood.

Too much puzzle-solving, not enough suspense.

Book review examples for non-fiction books

Nonfiction books are generally written to inform readers about a certain topic. As such, the focus of a nonfiction book review will be on the clarity and effectiveness of this communication . In carrying this out, a book review may analyze the author’s source materials and assess the thesis in order to determine whether or not the book meets expectations.

The Washington Post reviews David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon :

The arc of David Grann’s career reminds one of a software whiz-kid or a latest-thing talk-show host — certainly not an investigative reporter, even if he is one of the best in the business. The newly released movie of his first book, “The Lost City of Z,” is generating all kinds of Oscar talk, and now comes the release of his second book, “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI,” the film rights to which have already been sold for $5 million in what one industry journal called the “biggest and wildest book rights auction in memory.”

Grann deserves the attention. He’s canny about the stories he chases, he’s willing to go anywhere to chase them, and he’s a maestro in his ability to parcel out information at just the right clip: a hint here, a shading of meaning there, a smartly paced buildup of multiple possibilities followed by an inevitable reversal of readerly expectations or, in some cases, by a thrilling and dislocating pull of the entire narrative rug.

All of these strengths are on display in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Around the turn of the 20th century, oil was discovered underneath Osage lands in the Oklahoma Territory, lands that were soon to become part of the state of Oklahoma. Through foresight and legal maneuvering, the Osage found a way to permanently attach that oil to themselves and shield it from the prying hands of white interlopers; this mechanism was known as “headrights,” which forbade the outright sale of oil rights and granted each full member of the tribe — and, supposedly, no one else — a share in the proceeds from any lease arrangement. For a while, the fail-safes did their job, and the Osage got rich — diamond-ring and chauffeured-car and imported-French-fashion rich — following which quite a large group of white men started to work like devils to separate the Osage from their money. And soon enough, and predictably enough, this work involved murder. Here in Jazz Age America’s most isolated of locales, dozens or even hundreds of Osage in possession of great fortunes — and of the potential for even greater fortunes in the future — were dispatched by poison, by gunshot and by dynamite. […]

Stacked Books reviews Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers :

I’ve heard a lot of great things about Malcolm Gladwell’s writing. Friends and co-workers tell me that his subjects are interesting and his writing style is easy to follow without talking down to the reader. I wasn’t disappointed with Outliers. In it, Gladwell tackles the subject of success – how people obtain it and what contributes to extraordinary success as opposed to everyday success.

The thesis – that our success depends much more on circumstances out of our control than any effort we put forth – isn’t exactly revolutionary. Most of us know it to be true. However, I don’t think I’m lying when I say that most of us also believe that we if we just try that much harder and develop our talent that much further, it will be enough to become wildly successful, despite bad or just mediocre beginnings. Not so, says Gladwell.

Most of the evidence Gladwell gives us is anecdotal, which is my favorite kind to read. I can’t really speak to how scientifically valid it is, but it sure makes for engrossing listening. For example, did you know that successful hockey players are almost all born in January, February, or March? Kids born during these months are older than the others kids when they start playing in the youth leagues, which means they’re already better at the game (because they’re bigger). Thus, they get more play time, which means their skill increases at a faster rate, and it compounds as time goes by. Within a few years, they’re much, much better than the kids born just a few months later in the year. Basically, these kids’ birthdates are a huge factor in their success as adults – and it’s nothing they can do anything about. If anyone could make hockey interesting to a Texan who only grudgingly admits the sport even exists, it’s Gladwell. […]

Ten years ago, I read a book called Almost Perfect. The young-adult novel by Brian Katcher won some awards and was held up as a powerful, nuanced portrayal of a young trans person. But the reality did not live up to the book’s billing. Instead, it turned out to be a one-dimensional and highly fetishized portrait of a trans person’s life, one that was nevertheless repeatedly dubbed “realistic” and “affecting” by non-transgender readers possessing only a vague, mass-market understanding of trans experiences.

In the intervening decade, trans narratives have emerged further into the literary spotlight, but those authored by trans people ourselves – and by trans men in particular – have seemed to fall under the shadow of cisgender sensationalized imaginings. Two current Canadian releases – Soar, Adam, Soar and This One Looks Like a Boy – provide a pointed object lesson into why trans-authored work about transgender experiences remains critical.

To be fair, Soar, Adam, Soar isn’t just a story about a trans man. It’s also a story about epilepsy, the medical establishment, and coming of age as seen through a grieving father’s eyes. Adam, Prashaw’s trans son, died unexpectedly at age 22. Woven through the elder Prashaw’s narrative are excerpts from Adam’s social media posts, giving us glimpses into the young man’s interior life as he traverses his late teens and early 20s. […]

“Eat Pray Love” is so popular that it is almost impossible to not read it. Having felt ashamed many times on my not having read this book, I quietly ordered the book (before I saw the movie) from amazon.in and sat down to read it. I don’t remember what I expected it to be – maybe more like a chick lit thing but it turned out quite different. The book is a real story and is a short journal from the time when its writer went travelling to three different countries in pursuit of three different things – Italy (Pleasure), India (Spirituality), Bali (Balance) and this is what corresponds to the book’s name – EAT (in Italy), PRAY (in India) and LOVE (in Bali, Indonesia). These are also the three Is – ITALY, INDIA, INDONESIA.

Though she had everything a middle-aged American woman can aspire for – MONEY, CAREER, FRIENDS, HUSBAND; Elizabeth was not happy in her life, she wasn’t happy in her marriage. Having suffered a terrible divorce and terrible breakup soon after, Elizabeth was shattered. She didn’t know where to go and what to do – all she knew was that she wanted to run away. So she set out on a weird adventure – she will go to three countries in a year and see if she can find out what she was looking for in life. Look, I'm not a happy crier. I might cry at songs about leaving and missing someone; I might cry at books where things don't work out; I might cry at movies where someone dies. I've just never really understood why people get all choked up over happy, inspirational things. But Michelle Obama's kindness and empathy changed that. This book had me in tears for all the right reasons.

This is not really a book about politics, though political experiences obviously do come into it. It's a shame that some will dismiss this book because of a difference in political opinion, when it is really about a woman's life. About growing up poor and black on the South Side of Chicago; about getting married and struggling to maintain that marriage; about motherhood; about being thrown into an amazing and terrifying position.

I hate words like "inspirational" because they've become so overdone and cheesy, but I just have to say it-- Michelle Obama is an inspiration. I had the privilege of seeing her speak at The Forum in Inglewood, and she is one of the warmest, funniest, smartest, down-to-earth people I have ever seen in this world.

And yes, I know we present what we want the world to see, but I truly do think it's genuine. I think she is someone who really cares about people - especially kids - and wants to give them better lives and opportunities.

She's obviously intelligent, but she also doesn't gussy up her words. She talks straight, with an openness and honesty rarely seen. She's been one of the most powerful women in the world, she's been a graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School, she's had her own successful career, and yet she has remained throughout that same girl - Michelle Robinson - from a working class family in Chicago.

I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't benefit from reading this book.

अवध प्रांत में पांच मील के फासले पर दो गाँव हैं: सेमरी और बेलारी । होरी बेलारी में रहता है और राय साहब अमर पाल सिंह सेमरी में रहते हैं। खन्ना, मालती और डाॅ.मेहता लखनऊ में रहते हैं। गोदान का आरंभ ग्रामीण परिवेश से होता है। धनिया के मना करने पर भी होरी रायसाहब से मिलने बेलारी से सेमरी जाता है। उसे लगता है कि रायसाहब से मिलते रहने से कुछ सामाजिक मर्यादा बढ़ जाती है। वह कहता है, ’’यह इसी मिलते-जुलते रहने का परसाद है कि अब तब जान जान बची हुई है।’’ वह समझता है कि इनके पाँवों तले अपनी गर्दन दबी हुई है। इसलिए उन पाँवों के सहलाने में ही कुशल है।

रास्ते में उसे पङोस के गाँव का ग्वाला भोला मिलता है। उसकी गायों को देखकर होरी के मन में एक गाय रखने की लालसा उत्पन्न होती है। वह विधुर भोला के मन में फिर से सगाई करा देने का लालच देता है। भोला उसे अस्सी रुपये की गाय उधार पर ले जाने का आग्रह करता है और अपने पास भूसे की कमी बात करता है। होरी अभाव में पङे आदमी से गाय ले लेने को उचित न मानकर फिर ले लूंगा। कहकर गाय लेने से मना कर देता है, पर भूसा देने का वायदा कर सेमरी में पहुँचता है।

रायसाहब अपनी असुविधाओं को बता कर चाहते हैं कि टैक्स की वसूली में होरी उनकी सहायता करे। होरी उनकी बातों आ जाता है। इस समय एक आदमी आकर राय साहब को बताता है कि मजदूर बेगार करने से मना कर रहे है। यह सुनकर राय साहब आग बबूला हो जाते हैं और उन्हें हंटर से ठीक करने की कह उठकर चले जाते हैं।

घर पर पहुँचर होरी राय साहब भी तारीफ करता है बेटा गोबर उन्हें ’रंगा सियार’ कहकर उनसे अपनी नफरत जाहिर करता है। होरी बताता है कि उसने भोला को भूसा देने का वचन दिया है। यह सुनकर गोबर और धनिया उस पर बिगङते है। होरी जब बताता है कि भेाला धनिया की प्रशंसा कर रहा था, तब धनिया कुछ नरम पङ जाती है। भोला भूसा लेने आता है। धनिया तीन खोंचे भूसा भरवाकर पति और बेटे को उसके घर तक भूसा पहुँचाने को कहती है। भोला के घर पर उसकी विधवा बेटी झुनिया है। उससे गोबर की मुलाकात होती है। दोनों परस्पर के प्रति आकर्षित हो जाते हैं। भोला होरी से दूसरे दिन गाय ले लेने को कहता है।

दूसरे दिन गोबर भोला के घर से गाय लाता है। झुनिया उसे छोङने बेलारी के निकट तक आती है। फिर मिलने का वायदा करके लौट जाती है।

गाय के आते ही होरी के घर में आनन्द की लहर उमङती है। गाय का भव्य स्वागत किया जाता है। गाय के लिए आँगन में नाँद गाङी जाती है। गाँववाले आकर गाय के लक्षण भी और होरी की खुशकिस्मती की तारीफ करते है। केवल अलग्योझा हो गए उसके दो भाई हीरा और शोभा नहीं आते। हीरा होरी की निंदा कर रहा था। होरी धनिया को यह बताता है। धनिया यह सुनकर उससे झगङती है।

सेमरी में राय साहब के घर पर उत्सव है। उसमें धनुषयज्ञ नाटक में होरी जनक के माली का अभिनय करता है। उत्सव के लिए होरी को पांच रुपये नजराना देना है। राय साबह के मेहमानों में गाँव और शहर के लोग हैं। शहर के मेहमान हैं – बिजली पत्र के संपादक पं. ओंकारनाथ, वकील तथा दलाल मि. तंखा, दर्शनशास्त्र के प्रोफेसर डाॅ. मेहता, मिल मालिक मि. खन्ना, उनकी धर्मपत्नी कामिनी (गोविन्दी), डाॅक्टर मिस मालती और मिर्जा खुशींद। वहाँ बातचीत में रायसाहब जमींदारी प्रथा के शोषण की निंदा करते हैं।

डाॅ. मेहता और रायसाहब की कथनी और करनी के अंतर में प्रति व्यंग्य करते हैं। भोजन के समय मालती मांस-मदिरा का स्थान छोङकर ओंकारनाथ को भुलावे में डालकर शराब पिलवा देती है और वायदे के मुताबिक एक हजार रुपये इनाम लेती है। उसी समय पठान के वेश में डाॅ. मेहता आकर रुपये मांगते हैं और धमकी देते हैं कि रुपए न मिले तो वे गोली चला देंगे। अंत में होरी वहाँ प्रवेश करके पठान को गिराकर उसकी मूँछें उखाङ लेता है। पठान के वेश में आए मेहता की नाटकबाजी वहीं खत्म हो जाती है।

उसी समय सब शिकार खेलने जाने का कार्यक्रम बनाते हैं। तीन टोलियाँ बनती हैं। पहली टोली में मेहता और मालती जाते हैं। मालती मेहता के प्रति आकर्षित है, पर मेहता को इस ओर कोई आकर्षण नहीं है। मेहता को शिकार की चिङिया पानी से लाकर एक जंगली लङकी देती है और दोनों को अपने घर तक ले जाकर मधुर व्यवहार से खुश कर देती है।

इससे मालती ईर्ष्या करती है तो वह मेहता की नजर में गिर जाती है। दूसरी टोली के रायसाहब और खन्ना के बीच मिल के शेयर के बारे में बातचीत होती है। रायसाहब शेयर खरीदने की बात टाल देते हैं। तीसरी टोली में तंखा और मिर्जा हैं। मिर्जा एक हिरन का शिकार करते हैं। हिरन को एक ग्रामीण युवक को देते हैं। सब मिलकर उस युवक के गाँव में जाते हैं। खा-पीकर खुशी से सारा दिन वहाँ बताकर शाम को लौट आते हैं।

होरी के घर पर गाय आ जाने से सब खुश थे। इतने में रायसाहब को कारिंदा कहता है कि नोखेराम बाकी लगान न चुकाने वाले खेत में हल नहीं जोत सकेंगे। होरी पैसे का इंतजाम करने के लिए साहूकार झींगुरीसिंह के पास पहुँचता है। झींगुरी सिंह की आँख गाय पर थी। उसने गाय ले लेने का चक्कर चलाया और कर्ज न लेकर लाचार होकर गाय बेचकर लगान चुकाने के लिए वह राजी हो जाता है और धनिया को भी राजी कर लेता है। रात को घर के भीतर उमस होने के कारण वह गाय को बाहर लाकर बांधता है और बीमार शोभा को देखकर लौटते समय गाय के पास हीरा को देखकर ठिठक जाता है।

उसी रात को विष दिए जाने से गाय मर जाती है तो होरी धनिया को हीरा पर शक होेने की बात बता देता है तो धनिया हीरा को गालियाँ देती है और सारे गाँव में कोहरराम मचा देती है। होरी भाई को बचाने के लिए सच को छिपाकर गोबर की झूठी कसम खा लेता है। जाँच पङताल करने दारोगा गाँव में आता है। गाँव के मुखिया लोग इस विपत्ति का फायदा उठाने के लिए हीरा पर जुर्माना लगाते हैं।

कुर्की से बचने तथा परिवार की इज्जत बचाने होरी झिंगुरी सिंह से कर्ज लेकर रिश्वत के पैसे लाता है, पर धनिया के कारण वह दारोगा को मिल नहीं पाता। दारोगा मुखिया लोगों के घर की तलाशी लेने की धमकी देकर उनसे भी रिश्वत के पैसे वसूल करके चला जाता है।

गोहत्या करके पाप के डर से हीरा घर से भाग जाता है। होरी हीरा की पत्नी पुनिया को खेत संभालता है। बीच में एक महीने तक बीमार भी पङ जाता है। एक रात होरी कङकती सर्दी में खेत की रखवाली कर रहा था कि धनिया वहाँ पहुँच जाती है और बताती है कि पांच महीने का गर्भ लेकर झुनिया घर में आ गई है। होरी पहले उसे निकाल देने की बात तो करता है, बाद में धनिया के समझाने पर उसे अपने घर में रहने का आश्वासन देता है।

अब फिर से पंचायत को होरी का गला दबाने का मौका मिल जाता है। झुनिया के एक लङका होता है। बिरादरी में ऐसे पाप के लिए गाँव की पंचायत होरी पर सौ रुपए नकद और तीस मन अनाज का डाँड लगाती है। धनिया पंचायत पर बहुत फुफकारती है। पर होरी झिंगुरी सिंह के पास मकान रेहन पर रखकर अस्सी रुपये लाता है और डाँड चुकाता है।

गोबर-झुनिया को चुपके से अपने घर में छोङकर लोकलज्जा के भय से लखनऊ शहर भाग जाता है। वह मिर्जा खुर्शीद के यहाँ महीन के पंद्रह रुपये वेतन पर नौकरी करता है। उनकी दी हुई कोठरी में रहता है।

डाँड में सारा अनाज दे देने के बाद होरी के पास कुछ नहीं बचता। इसी समय पुनिया उसकी सहायता करती है। वर्षा के अभाव से उसकी ईख सूख जाती है। भोला गाय के रुपये लेना चाहता है। होरी रुपये दे नहीं पाता। भोला होरी के बैल खोलकर ले जाता है। गाँववाले इसका विरोध करते हैं, पर धर्म के भय से मर्यादावादी और ईमानदार होरी विवश होकर इसकी अनुमति दे देता है।

मालती राजनीतिक और सामाजिक कार्यों में व्यस्त रहने वाली महिला है। उसके प्रयत्न से मेहता वीमेन्स लीग में भाषण देने के दौरान महिलाओं को समान अधिकार की मांग छोङकर त्याग, दया, क्षमा अपनाने सुझाव देते हैं, जो गृहस्थ जीवन के लिए निहायत जरूरी है।

मालती मेहता से सहमत होती है। वह मेहता को अपने घर पर खाने बुलाती है। उसी समय मेहता आरोप लगाते हैं कि उसी के कारण मि. खन्ना, मिसेज खन्ना से अच्छा बर्ताव नहीं करते। यह सुनकर मालती बिगाङ जाती है और अपने घर चली जाती है।

रायसाहब को पता चल जाता है कि होरी से वसूल किए गए डाँड के सारे पैसे गाँव के मुखिया लोग खा गए। वे नोखेराम से रुपये देने को कहते हैं तो चारों महाजन ’बिजली’ के संपादक ओंकारनाथ को सूचना दे देते हैं कि वे अपनी पत्रिका में ऐसी सनसनीखेज खबर छापने जा रहे हैं। रायसाहब सौ ग्राहकों का चंदा रिश्वत के रूप में भरकर किसी तरह इसे छापने से रोक लेते हैं।

जब गाँव में बुवाई शुरू हो जाती है तब होरी के पास बैल नहीं है। होरी की लाचारी का फायदा उठाकर दातादीन होरी से साझे में बुवाई करने का प्रस्ताव देकर होरी को मजदूर के स्तर तक ले जाता है।

उधर दातादीन का बेटा मातादीन झुनिया को प्रेम-पाश में फँसाने के लिए प्रयास करता है। लेकिन बीच में सोना पहुँच जाने से मामला गङबङ होने से बच जाता है।

होरी ईख बेचने जाता है तो मिल मालिक से मिलकर महाजन सारा रुपया कर्ज के लिए वसूल कर लेते हैं। मि. खन्ना और उसकी पत्नी गोविंदी के स्वभाव में आकाश – पाताल का अंतर है।

गोविंदी सादा जीवन पसन्द करती है तो मि. खन्ना विलासमय जीवन। एक बार पति-पत्नी में बेटे के इलाज के लिए भिन्न-भिन्न डाॅक्टरों को बुलाने के मतांतर मेहता से होती है। मेहता उसकी प्रशंसा कर के उसे समझाबुझा कर घर लौटा लाते हैं। होरी दातादीन की मजूरी करने लगता है।

होरी दातादीन की मजदूरी करने लगता है। ऊख काटते समय कङी मेहनत करने के कारण वह बेहोश हो जाता है। उधर गोबर अब नौकरी छोङकर खोंचा लगाने के काम में लग जाता है। उसके पास दो पैसे हो जाते हैं। वह एक दिन गाँव में पहुँचता है। वह सभी के लिए सामान लाता है। गाँव में गोबर महाजनों की बङी बेइज्जती करता है।

होली के अवसर पर गाँव के मुखिया लोगों की नकल करके अभिनय किया जाता है। फलस्वरूप गोबर सभी महाजनों के क्रोध का शिकार बन जाता है। जंगी को शहर में नौकरी कराने का लोभ दिखाकर उसे प्रभावित कर देते हैं। वह भोला को मना कर नोखेराम को लगान वसूल करके रसीद न देने पर उसे अदालत की धमकी देता है। झुनिया को फुसलाकर शहर जाते समय माँ से झगङा हो जाता है।

माँ के पांव में सिर न झुकाकर बिलकुल उद्दंड और स्वार्थी बनकर बालबच्चों को लेकर शहर चला जाता है। राय साहब की कई समस्याएँ थीं। उनको कन्या का विवाह करना था, अदालत में एक मुकदमा करना था और सिर पर चुनाव भी थे। कुंवर दिग्विजय सिंह के साथ शादी तय हुई थी। राजा साहब के साथ चुनाव लङना था। पैसों की कमी थी इसीलिए वे तंखा के पास उधार मांगने के लिए जाते हैं। वे मना करते हैं तो वे खन्ना के पास जाते हैं।

खन्ना पहले आनाकानी करके बाद में कमीशन लेकर पैसों का इंतजाम कर सकने की बात बताते हैं। बातचीत के दौरान मेहता महिलाओं की व्यायामशाला की नींव रखने के लिए मना करते हैं।

रायसाहब पांच हजार लिख देते हैं। फिर मालती पहुँचती है तो खन्ना से एक हजार का चैक लिखवा लेती है। मातादीन की रखैल सिलिया अनाज के ढेर से कोई सेर भर अनाज दुलारी सहुआइन को दे देती है तो मातादीन उसे धिक्कारता है। निकल जाने को कहता है। सिलिया दुःखी होती है। सिलिया के बाप हरखू के कहने पर उसके साथी मातादीन के मुँह पर हड्डी डालकर उसे जातिभ्रष्ट कर देते हैं। धनिया सिलिया को अपने घर पर रख लेती है। सिलिया मजदूरी करके गुजरबसर करती है।

सोना सत्रह साल की हो गई थी। उसके विवाह के लिए पैसों की जरूरत थी। सोना को मालूम हुआ कि पिता विवाह के लिए दुलारी से दो सौ रुपये लाएँगे। सोना सिलिया को भावी पति मथुरा के पास भेजती है। ससुरालवाले बिना दहेज के बहू लेने को तैयार हो गए। लेकिन धनिया अपनी मर्यादा बचाने के लिए दहेज देना चाहती है। भोला एक जवान विधवा नोहरी से विवाह करता है। नोहरी के साथ बहुओं से नहीं पटती। पुत्री कामना भोला को घर से भगा देती है। नोखेराम नोहरी की लालसा से भोला को नौकर रख लेता है। नोहरी गाँव की रानी की जाती का है। लाला पटेश्वरी साहूकार मंगरू शाह को मंगरू शाह को भङकाकर होरी की सारी नोहरी गाँव की रानी की जाती का है।

लाला पटेश्वरी साहूकार मंगरू शाह को भङकाकर होरी की सारी ईख नीलाम कर देता है। इससे उगाही की उम्मीद न होने से दुलारी होरी को शादी के लिए दो सौ रुपये नहीं देती है। इतने में सहानुभूति दिखाकर नोहरी होरी को दो सौ रुपये देकर अपनी दयाशीलता का परिचय देती है।

शहर में परिवार लाकर गोबर देखता है कि जहाँ वह खोंचा लगाता था, वहीं दूसरा बैठने लगा है। उसको कारोबार में घाटा हुआ तो वह मिल में नौकरी कर लेता है। झुनिया को गोबर की कामुकता पसंद नहीं आती। गोबर को बेटा मर जाता है। झुनिया गर्भवती है। गोबर नशा करने लगा है। झुनिया को पीटता है, गालियाँ देता है।

चुहिया की सहायता से झुनिया एक बेटे को जन्म देती है। मिल में झगङा हो जाने से गोबर घायल हो जाता है। मिल गोबर की सेवा करने के दौरान पति पत्नी में फिर संबंध स्वाभाविक हो जाता है।

मातादीन नोहरी के प्रति फिर से आकर्षित होता है। वह सिलिया के लिए छोटी को दो रुपये देता है। रुपये पाकर सिलिया खुश होती है। यह समाचार देने सोना के ससुराल पहुँचती है। मथुरा नोहरी से प्रेम-निवेदन करता है। दोनों पास-पास आ जाते हैं तो सोना की आवाज से पीछे हट जाते हैं। सोना सिलिया को बहुत फटकारती है।

मिल में आग लग गई थी। मिल में नए मजदूर ठीक से काम नहीं कर पा रहे थे। इसलिए पुराने मजदूर ले लिए जाते हैं। खन्ना-गोविंदी का मनमुटाव मिट जाता है। मेहता से प्रेरित होकर मालती सेवा-व्रत में लगी रहती है। एक दिन मेहता और मालती होरी के गाँव में पहुँचकर लोगों से मिलते हैं। सहायता करते हैं। राय साहब की लङकी की शादी हो जाती है।

मुकदमे और चुनाव में भी जीत होती है। वे लोग होम मेंबर भी बन जाते हैं। राजा साहब रायसाहब के पुत्र रुद्रप्रताप मालती की बहन सरोज से विवाह करके इंग्लैण्ड चला जाता है। फिर रायसाहब की बेटी और दामाद में विवाह विच्छेद हो जाता है। मालती देखती है कि दूसरों की सेवा करने के कारण ऊँची वेतन के बावजूद उन पर कर्ज है। कुर्की भी आई है।

तब मालती मेहता को अपने घर पर ले आती है। उनकी सहायता करती है। मालती गोबर को माली रख लेती है। उसके बेटे की चिकित्सा और सेवा भी करती हैं। मालती मेहता से विवाह करना अस्वीकार करके मित्र बनकर रहने को पसंद करती है।

मातादीन सिलिया के बालक को प्यार करता है। वह निमोनिया में कर जाता है। मातादीन सिलिया के प्रति आकर्षित होता है। सारा जाति-बंधन तोङकर उसके साथ रहता है।

होरी की आर्थिक दशा दिनोंदिन गिरती जाती है। तीन साल तक लगान न चुकाने से नोखेराम बेदखली का दावा करता है। मातादीन होरी को सुझाव देता है कि अधेङ रामसेवक मेहता से रूपा की शादी करके बदले में कुछ रुपए ले लें और खेती करे। होरी यह सुनकर बङा दुःखी होता है। पर अंत में होरी और धनिया राजी हो जाते हैं। गोबर को शादी में आने की खबर दी जाती है।

गोबर झुनिया को लेकर गाँव में पहुँचता है। रूपा की शादी होती है। मालती भी शादी में शरीक होती है। गोबर गाँव में झुनिया को छोङकर लखनऊ चला जाता है। रूपा ससुराल में समृद्धि देखकर पिता की गाय की लालसा की बात सोचकर दुःखी होती है। मैक जाते समय वह एक गाय ले जाने की बात सोचती है। होरी पोते मंगल के लिए गाय लेना चाहता था।

इसलिए वह कंकङ खोदने की मजदूरी करता है। रात को बैठकर धनिया के साथ सुतली कातता है। एक दिन हीरा आकर पहुँचता है और होरी से माफी मांगता है। होरी खुश हो जाता है। होरी कंकङ खोदते समय दोपहर की छुट्टी के समय लेट जाता है। उसको कै (उल्टी) होती है। उसे लू लग जाती है। धनिया भाग कर आती है। सब इकट्ठे हो जाते हैं। शोभा और हीरा को घर पर ले गए।

होरी की जबान बंद हो गई। धनिया घरेलू उपचार करती है। सब बेकार जाता है। हीरा गो-दान करने को कहता है। दूसरे लोग भी यही कहते हैं। धनिया सुतली बेचकर रखे बीस आने पैसे पति के ठंडे हाथ में रखकर ब्राह्मण दातादीन से बोलती है – महाराज घर में न गाय है न बछिया, न पैसा। यही इनका गोदान है। विशेष – ‘गोदान’ केवल वर्तमान का एक निष्पक्ष चित्र है। उसमें आगत भविष्य की सम्भावनाओं झाँकी नहीं कराई गयी है। इसमें तो एक चरित्र को लेकर उसे अनेक परिस्थितियों में डालकर तथा बहुत से पात्रों और चरित्रों को संसर्ग में लाकर समाज का एक जीवित चित्र निर्माण किया गया है। इसमें भी ‘गबन’ की भाँति कथावस्तु और चरित्र में भेद नहीं रह गया है।

‘होरी’ के चरित्र की थोङी सी विशेषता दिखलाकर और उसे एक विशेष वातावरण में रखकर लेखक तटस्थ होकर स्वयं द्रष्टा बन जाता है। होरी अपने जातिगत स्वभाव से ही नवीन परिस्थितियाँ उत्पन्न करता है और फिर विवश होकर उनके अनुसार ही ढल जाता है।

इस परिस्थितियों की तरंगों में डूबता-उतरता नियति के हाथों का खिलौना वह कृषक जीवन-यात्रा के अंतिम छोर तक चला जाता है, परन्तु नगर वाले कथानक में यह बात इतनी स्पष्ट नहीं है। वहाँ पर परिस्थितियों की प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्ति पर इतनी सरलता से नहीं होती। रायसाहब, मिर्जा खुर्शेद तथा मेहता आदि प्रायः सभी में वैयक्तिकता है, परन्तु यह वैयक्तिकता इतनी सबल भी नहीं है कि वह परिस्थितियों को तोङ-मरोङ सके।

वास्तव में ‘गोदान‘ में साहूकारों द्वारा किसान के शोषण की ही कहानी है। ये साहूकार कई प्रकार के है, जिनमें झिंगुरीसिंह, पंडित दातादीन, लाला पटेश्वरी, दुलारी सहुआइन आदि। साहूकार के अतिरिक्त जमींदार और सरकार के अत्याचार का भी गोदान में साधारण दिग्दर्शन कराया गया है, किन्तु साहूकार, जमींदार और सरकार सबसे बढकर किसानों के सिर पर बिरादरी का भूत होता है।

बिरादरी से अलग जीवन की वह कोई कल्पना ही नहीं कर सकता है। शादी-ब्याह, मुंडन-छेदन, जन्म-मरण सब कुछ बिरादरी के हाथ में है। आप बङे से बङे पाप कर्म करते जाए, किन्तु बिरादरी तब तक सिर न उठाएगी जब आप उसके द्वारा निर्धारित कृत्रिम मर्यादा का पालन करते जा रहे है। जो इन कृत्रिम सामाजिक बन्धनों के निर्वाह में चुका है उसके लिए वह ग्रामीण समाज कठोर से कठोर दण्ड-व्यवस्था अपनाता है।

हमारे किसानों ने धर्म का एक बङा ही विकृत रूप अपनाया है, किन्तु धीरे-धीरे गाँवों में भी उष्ण रक्त इन कृत्रिमताओं का विरोध करने लगा है। ‘गोदान’ में गोबर, मातादीन, सिलिया, झुनिया आदि इसके उदाहरण हैं।

प्रेमचन्द का स्पष्ट कथन है कि ‘मेरे उपन्यास का उद्देश्य है धन के आधार पर दुश्मनी’। प्रेमचन्द ने अपनी सहानुभूति का बहुत बङा भाग शोषित वर्ग को समर्पित किया है। उन्होंने जमीदारों, पूँजीपतियों, महाजनों, धार्मिक पाखण्डियों के दोषों पर तीखे प्रहार किए हैं।

उन्होंने उपन्यास में प्रतिपादित किया है कि किसान को सबसे अधिक महाजनी सभ्यता से गुजरना पङता है। महाजनी सभ्यता क्रूरता तथा शोषण पर आधारित है।

गोदान उपन्यास पात्र-परिचयः

होरी- (मुख्य नायक) धनिया- होरी की पत्नी होरी की संतान- गोबर, सोना, रूपा झुनिया- गोबर की पत्नी (भोला की विधवा बेटी) होरी के भाई- हीरा और  शोभा मालती मेहता साहूकार- झिंगुरी सिंह, पंडित दातादीन, लाला पटेश्वरी, दुलारी सहुआइन

गोदान उपन्यास के महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य 

⇒ होरी की इच्छा पछाई गाय लेने की थी। ⇔ होरी भोला (ग्वाला) से गाय लाया था। ⇒ होरी के गाँव का नाम- बेलारी। ⇔ ‘‘गाँव क्या था, पुरवा था, दस-बारह घरों का, जिसमें आधे खपरैल के थे, आधे फूस के।’’-कोदई गाँव का वर्णन। ⇒ गोबर का वास्तविक नाम-गोवर्धन। ⇔ ‘बाहर से तितली है और भीतरी से मधुमक्खी’ यह कथन ‘गोदान‘ उपन्यास में-मालती के लिए। ⇒ ‘गोदान’ उपन्यास यथार्थवाद उपन्यास है, न कि आदर्शवाद। ⇔ ‘‘पहना दो मेरे हाथ में हथकङियाँ, देख लिया तुम्हारा न्याय और अक्ल की दौङ’’ कथन है-धनिया का। ⇒ उपन्यास में महाजनी सभ्यता का विरोध हुआ है। ⇔ कृषक की आर्थिक समस्या का चित्रण हुआ है। ⇒ यह उपन्यास समस्या प्रधान है। ⇔ ‘गोदान में गाँधी और मार्क्स  को प्रेमचन्द ने घुला- मिला दिया है।’- कथन है बच्चन सिंह का। ⇒ प्रेमचन्द का सबसे विख्यात और अंतिम उपन्यास-गोदान (1936 ई.)। ⇔ गोदान की कथावस्तु-कृषक की समस्या। ⇒ होरी के पास पाँच बीघा जमीन थी। ⇔ गाँव की कथा और शहर की कथा साथ-साथ चलती है फिर दोनों कथाओं में संबंद्धता और संतुलन पाया जाता है। ⇒ गोदान एक राष्ट्रीय प्रतिनिधि उपन्यास है। ⇔ उपन्यास में शोषण व अन्याय के विरूद्ध भरती हुई नई पीढी की विद्रोह और असंतोष का प्रतीक है- गोबर। ⇒ मालती व मेहता लखनऊ में रहते है। ⇔ रायसाहब सेमरी गाँव में रहते है। ⇒ प्रेमचन्द ने गोदान को संक्रमण की पीङा का दस्तावेज बताया है। ⇔ पंडित दातादीन के पुत्र का नाम मातादीन था।

A solid first-semester introduction to the Hindi language, this textbook includes an introductory chapter on Hindi script and the sounds represented by Hindi letters, as well as a variety of lessons that are focused either on topics of conversation like family and common places (home, school, market) or on functional elements of the language like expressions of actions in the past, present, and future. Numerous instructional videos accompany the lesson materials. An overall glossary of vocabulary terms is not included, though each chapter does contain lists of key vocabulary items specific to each lesson.

Content Accuracy rating: 5

The English content is accurate, generally error-free, and unbiased. As a reviewer who specializes in second-language instruction for other languages, and not Hindi, I’m not in a position myself to comment on the accuracy of the Hindi lesson texts.

Relevance/Longevity rating: 5

Lesson content is presented in a way that will be helpful for true beginners to the language, focusing on basic conversational settings and fundamentals of Hindi grammar. Each chapter includes review activities relevant to a study abroad setting, making the course more relevant and meaningful for students who are preparing for a study abroad experience in a Hindi-speaking area.

One of this textbook’s key strengths is the abundance of interactive activities and review exercises throughout all of the chapters. Interactive activities are programmed in H5P, allowing for instant feedback. There are also some task-based speaking activities that require a classroom setting where students can interact with each other, and individual speaking activities that involve self-directed audio recording of student responses.

Clarity rating: 4

The text is clear and concise, and should be accessible to most undergraduate students. Common grammar concepts such as gender and case marking for nouns, as well as tense and aspect marking for verbs, are introduced in a somewhat perfunctory manner and may require additional explanation on the part of the instructor, where students are not already familiar with such concepts. The reading examples in certain lessons, such as the one on family, include clickable glosses for key vocabulary, but other readings in later lessons do not include any glosses.

Consistency rating: 4

The textbook is highly consistent across chapters, with each chapter including a number of reading and listening examples. Transliteration of Hindi script is provided only for the first lesson. An area for further improvement could be to provide alternative views of the reading examples including transliteration and glosses for all of the lessons.

Modularity rating: 4

Introductory foreign language textbooks generally do not lend themselves to modular presentation since certain language skills, such as an introduction to the script and pronunciation, provide a foundation for more generalized learning. With that in mind, the book is reasonably divided into smaller reading sections and activities that make sense for a first-semester college course.

The format in which the dialogues are presented, in table format with separate sentences in each line and translations in each column, is relatively static and does not allow for easy adaptation or reorganization.

Organization/Structure/Flow rating: 5

The topics in the text are presented in a clear fashion, which follows a logic of introducing progressively more advanced grammar points over the course of study.

Interface rating: 5

The text is straightforward to use. All of the accompanying instructional videos include full transcripts.

Future iterations of the textbook could be further improved by including supplementary materials that would make the course content even more easily navigated and managed, such as a full glossary of vocabulary with links to lesson pages for each vocab item, and vocabulary flashcard materials that could either be provided in OER format or hosted on an external site like Quizlet or Memrise.

Grammatical Errors rating: 5

The text contains very few grammatical errors.

Cultural Relevance rating: 5

The text is culturally appropriate for native-English learners of Hindi who are learning in a college setting. Additional content and cultural notes in each chapter provide ample additional opportunities for learning about culture.

About the book.

Basic Hindi I is an online, interactive, and tech-enhanced textbook that promotes speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural skills. Each Chapter in this book has clear stated learning outcomes, a review of previous chapters, reading/listening sections, study abroad section, relevant grammatical items, and cultural notes. The pedagogical approach in the book is mixed and informed by the socio-cultural approaches and the generative approaches of the Second Language Acquisition theory. The mixed theoretical backgrounds match diverse learning and teaching philosophies and styles. Following the learning outcomes guided by American Council of Teaching Foreign Language (ACTFL), this textbook aims for the novice learners to attain intermediate low to mid-level proficiency level. The textbook incorporates pictures, audio-visual materials, and activities developed on the H5P platform to keep learners engaged.
