This results in the increase in pollution levels in the atmosphere. The sky turns hazy and the consequences are harmful. It gives way to many health problems. This is especially unsafe for asthmatic patients, heart patients, pregnant women, elderly people and infants. It is difficult to step out on Diwali as well as days after the festival.

The burning of crackers does not only pollute the air but also causes noise pollution. It is particularly disturbing for sick and elderly people, small kids, students and animals.

Eco-Friendly Diwali: A Good Idea

It is high time we must behave as responsible citizens and stop burning crackers to celebrate Diwali or any other occasion for that matter. We must celebrate eco-friendly Diwali.

We must say no to crackers and advise those around us to do the same. Parents must take this as their responsibility to tell their kids about the negative repercussions of burning crackers. Kids must also be sensitized about the same in the schools. This will help in bringing down the fire works on Diwali.

Apart from the measures that people can take at their end, it is important to put a check on the sale of fire crackers. The government must intervene for the same. The production and sale of fire crackers must be banned or at least some restriction should be put on the same.

Diwali is my favorite festival of the year and I celebrate it with lots of enthusiasm with my family members and friends. Diwali is called as the festival of lights because we celebrate it by lighting lots of diyas and candles. It is a traditional and cultural festival celebrated by each and every Hindu person all over India and abroad. People decorate their houses with lots of candles and small clay oil lamps indicating the victory of good over evil.

Family members spend their most of the day time in preparing house (cleaning, decorating, etc) to welcome the festival with grand evening party. Neighbors, family members, and friends gets collected in the evening party and enjoy the party with lots of delicious Indian dishes, dance, music, etc all through the night. Houses look very attractive in white wash, candle lights and rangolis. High pitch music and fireworks makes the celebration more interesting.

People go to their home by taking off from their job, offices and other works; students also book their train around three months ago to easily go to their home on Diwali festival because everyone wants to celebrate this festival with their family members in the home town. People generally enjoy the festival by feasting, bursting crackers and enjoying the dance with family and friends.

However, it is prohibited by the doctors to got outside and enjoy firecrackers especially people suffering from lung or heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Such people have to knock the doctor’s door because of consuming highly saturated food and sweets in high amount and lack of exercises and pollution caused by crackers in these days.

Such firecrackers are very dangerous as they release toxic pollutants like sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and so many etc which gets intermingled into the air and causes variety of ailments like asthma, bronchitis, hypertension, etc. It affects the people of all age group however those people who already suffer any type of ailment. Together with the human beings, it also affects the lives of animals, birds and other living beings due to air and noise pollution.

Now-a-days, there is a campaign run by the government to celebrate pollution free Diwali all over the country. Schools and various organizations also organizes various demonstrations prior to the celebration to educate and aware students for pollution-free festival. Environment and pollution departments also do many efforts by publishing pollution free news in the various newspapers to aware people and curb noise and air pollution because of firecrackers. Bursting sound-emitting firecrackers has been banned by the Supreme Court especially during 10 pm to 6 am.

Air and water pollution is also caused by the decay of remnants of fireworks and deluge of garbage like empty bottles, papers used to light off rockets, gift wrappers, dried flowers, etc at the nook and corners of the city. Diwali is also called "Dipawali" it is one of the major festival of the Hindu religion. People of all religions all over India celebrate Diwali with a lot of excitement and Happiness. Diwali is one of the festivals which is celebrated happily throughout the nation without any discrimination.

Diwali is one of the traditional festivals which has different stories about how it began one of the popular story behind the beginning of this festival is when Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman returned back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and getting victory over evil Ravana. The people welcomed them with lighting diyas all over Ayodhya, hence from that day Diwali is celebrated which gives the message of victory of good over bad.

Diwali is one of the major festival of India, and people are very excited about this festival. Diwali is celebrated with a lot of happiness. Diwali is one of the favorite festival on children because there is a vocational holiday for school during the festival of Diwali so children enjoy this festival a lot.

Before the beginning of Diwali people start cleaning and renovating their houses and beautifully decorate their houses. On eve of this Diwali festival children are offered brand new cloth and given firecrackers. This is also one reason because of which children love this festival so much.

Diwali is a festival of light, in this festival, every home is decorated with beautiful lights, Diyas are placed outside all houses and one lantern is hanged on the roof. During Diwali at night time all the darkness is overturned by lights, this is the reason because of which Diwali is also called as festival of lights. This light in darks gives us a message about the victory of good (light) over evil (dark).

On Diwali, my sister makes a beautiful rangoli with different pattern every day outside our door. In every house sweets and snacks are prepared, this includes "chakli, laddu, karanji, chivada, etc". These homemade snacks are then distributed to each other's home as greetings which increases relations with every family.

We enjoy this festival of Diwali a lot, we burst firecrackers every day. On the day of Laxmi puja we offer prayer to the goddess Laxmi for a wealthy life. On the day of Bhai Dooj, sister gives their brother a gift and greet each other.

Overall the festival of light Diwali is celebrated with a lot of excitement and happiness all over India. And I enjoy this festival a lot so Diwali is my favorite festival.

Over the centuries, it has become a national festival that is also celebrated by the non-Hindu community.

For instance, in Jainism, Diwali marks the spiritual awakening of Lord Mahavira and in Sikhism; they commemorate Guru Hargobind Ji, who was freed from imprisonment. Moreover, Diwali also marks the commencement of Hindu New Year and arrives in October or November every year and is celebrated in Lord Rama’s memory who returned to Ayodhya from fourteen years of exile. It is the sign of victory over evil and truth over lie.

Many days before people start the preparations for this festival as it is celebrated over five days. Everyone cleans their home, paints them and decorates it with colourful flowers and hang festoons on the doors. Not only houses shops are also whitewashed and decorated. Different types of lighting are used to maintain the theme of the festival. Lanterns of various shapes and colours are seen hanging outside the doors. People shop for new clothes and gold jewellery.

Earthen diya’s are arranged in a row both inside and outside. Rangoli a form of art which includes patterns are drawn on the floor by using coloured rice and sand, flowers or petals, and dry flour. Sweet delicacies are prepared and distributed among the neighbours and family. Relatives visit each other’s homes and exchange gifts and sweets. This creates love and ensures a strong bond among the family members.

It is an excellent way of strengthening ties between people as it encourages them to value their customs and tradition. Kids and children get to spend time with their cousin and burst crackers together. Furthermore, Goddess Lakshmi, known to shower wealth and prosperity, is worshipped by many during this auspicious time. According to Hindu philosophy worshipping Lakshmi during Diwali cleanses our soul and paves a way to her to enter our houses with lots of blessings and happiness.

Diwali is celebrated in honor of Goddess Lakshmi. In Mauritius, we celebrate Diwali with honor great devotion. We cook sweets like kanawla, gateau patate, tekwa, gulap jamoun and many other delicacies. At 6 pm we illuminate the house with candles and diyas. We pray, offer flowers, sweet and agarbathi. We also invite family and friends to add more joy to Diwali celebrations. Diwali is a great festival to Mauritians!!

I remember when I was in class 1, I wrote an essay on Diwali. I scribbled ‘Diwali is a festival of lights; people decorate their homes and exchange greetings……’ Well, Is it actually bringing light and happiness around? is it actually sending positive vibes and blessings for happy and long life for the people around us?? If we are honest the answer is ‘No’. For most of us Diwali is just a synonym to a night full of crackers, noise and smoke. All this is an amalgamation of gloom, darkness, despair, health problems, environment degradation and murk. We scare the birds to death, shorten the lives of children who are engaged in cracker factories, trouble the heart and hospitalized patients, burn thousand of rupees to ashes in the name of ceremonies. Do we have to pay such a heavy cost to buy a smile for ourselves? It is nothing but a sadistic pleasure to have moments of joy in exchange of mass havoc. After all Goddess Lakshmi does not want us to dispel the darkness of amavasya in this way. Let us enjoy Diwali in its purest form by lighting lamps, offering prayers and by making this world a better place for you and for me and for the entire universe. Happy Diwali.

Diwali, popularly called Deepavali in some parts of India, is a festival which we all long for every year. The preparations for Deepavali start long before the festival date.

First, the excitement for us would be the new dresses that are bought to be worn for Deepavali. Since Deepavali is a festival for more than 2 days, we have 2 or 3 new dresses. Apart from this all elders visiting us buy us sweets and dresses also. Jeans, T shirts, Trousers and shirts were all bought for me by my parents.

The other major excitement for Deepavali is the bursting of crackers and fireworks. This year we burst lot of crackers. Earlier I used to be afraid of crackers. Now I have got over the fear of bursting crackers. My parents tell me that I have to be very careful while bursting. I followed their advice and there was no fire accident also. Sparklers, Rockets, Ground Chakkars and Flower pots were our favorites besides the Thousand thousand sparks bomb.

The third rejoicing aspect of Deepavali is the eating of sweets. We visit relatives and friends with sweets and snacks. They also visit us with sweets and snacks. We seek their blessings on the festival day. Gulab jamun, Laddoos, Halwas and Kaju cakes were my favorites.

My grandmother tells me that the victory of Good over Evil is the reason for this celebration. She also says that the festival is to mark the return of Rama to Ayodhya after his defeat of Ravana.

Lots of people also start new ventures on this day after performing Lakshmi Puja. This is marked by lighting of lamps, candles and diyas by the women folk in the family. The light and colour add to the celebrations.

In all, I can say that Deepavali is the brightest festival to be celebrated in India. The delicious food associated with the feast makes us feel that this festival must come more often in a year.

We start our Diwali evening by praying. Next we decorate our house with candles, thanking God for all he has given us. It looks beautiful when the oil lamps twinkle together in all the houses. Then late at night we get together and light the crackers. There is a lot of noise and air pollution. Then we have a small party where we eat and enjoy.

When I go to the temple I sing and play the harmoniam which is an Indian instrument. We light little lamps called dias, and put at least three in each room. Among the Jain festivals, Diwali is one of the most important one. For on this occasion we celebrate the Nirvana of Lord Mahavira who established the dharma as we follow it.

Lord Mahavira was born as Vardhamana on Chaitra Shukla 13 in the Nata clan at Khattiya-kundapura, near Vaishali. He obtained Kevala Gyana on Vishakha Shukla 10 at the Jambhraka village on the banks of Rijukula river at the age of 42. He initiated his shaashan (Jaina-shashana) on Shravana KrashNa 1 at his first assembly at Rajgrah. After having preached the dharma for 30 years, he attained Nirvana at Pava, at the age of 71 years and 6 and half months.

The day of his Nirvana is is mentioned by many ancient authors. TiloyapaNNatti mentions: kattiya-kiNhe chaudasipachchuse saadiNaamanakkhatte, pavaae Nayariye ekko viresaro siddho.

In Uttara-puraaNa: kraShNa-kaartika-pakshasya chartudashyam nishaatyay, svatiyoge tratiyeaddha-shukladhyaana-parayaNah.

Thus during the krashNa of kartika month, during the svati nakshatra, on the night of the 14th (dawn of the amavasya), lord Mahavira became a Siddha.

Titthogali Painnaya gives the following gatha: pancha ya maasaa pancha ya vaasa chhachcheva honti vaasasayaa | pariNivvuassa-arihito to uppanno sago raya ||

The first line of it was quoted in Dhavalaa by Virasenacharya. Thus the NirvaaNa of the lord occurred 605 years and 5 months before the Shaka king.

Kalpasutra mentions that the King Chetaka of Vaishali with several confederate kings, had a great lightning of lights, since they said: ``since the light of intelligence (Vardhamana Mahavira) is gone, let us make an illumination of the material matter'' The oldest use of the word "Diwali/Dipavali" occurs in "Harivamsha-Purana" written by Acharya Jinasena, composed in Shaka Samvat 705.

tatastuh lokah prativarsham-aadarat prasiddha-deepalikaya-aatra bharate | samudyatah poojayitum jineshvaram jinendra-nirvana vibhuti-bhaktibhak ||

Thus people in Bharata every year celebrate famous "Dipalikaya", to reverently worship the Jinendra on the occasion of his nirvana.

Diwali is not mentioned in Valmiki's Ramayana, Mahabharata, brahmanical Puranas or in Tulsidas's Ram-charit-manas. The Vira-Nirvana era originated on Oct. 15, 527 BCE. In 1997 the Vira-Nirvana Year 2524 will begin on Diwali. The Vikrama Samvat in Gujarat starts from Diwali.

Diwali or 'Deepawali',as it is known as,is the festival of lights.It is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm and joy. The celebration of Diwali finds its roots in the Hindu religion. On this day Lord Ram had returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after demolishing the demon Ravan. The people enlightened the whole city with diyas to welcome Lord Ram. It is thus a festival to mark the victory of good over the evil. Diwali falls on Amavasya that is a 'no moon night' and people enlighthen their houses to conquer the darkness. It is a five day festival.

The first day is called Dhanteras - On this day people buy new utensils or anything in gold or silver. The second day is Choti Deepawali - On this day diyas are kept at any dark corner of the house to symbolize that no evil can enter the house in the lights. The third day is Deepawali - People decorate their homes with diyas,candles and decorative bulbs and lights. Laxmi Ganesh Pooja is performed and then people light up crackers and enjoy themselves.Sweets and rich food is also prepared at home to celebrate the festival. The fourth day is Govardhan pooja on which the Govardhan pooja is performed to celebrate the great deed of Lord Krishna who lifted 'Govardhan Parbat' on a single finger and gave protection to the people from the heavy rains. And the last day is Bhai dooj on which sisters put 'roli teeka' on their brother's forehead and pray for their well being. Deepawali is thus a unique light festival filled with joys and happiness!
