Inside the Nicest EasyJet Plane We've Seen, the Airbus A321neo

Zach Honig

Last week, a surprise visitor made an appearance at the UK's biennial Farnborough Air Show, having been delivered to its new owner just a few days before.

Painted in the familiar EasyJet orange , G-UZMA, the carrier's very first Airbus A321neo, is the largest bird to grace the low-cost-carrier's fleet .

easy jet neo

And in typical EasyJet fashion, it was off and on its way almost as quickly as it arrived, operating regular flights on some of the airline's longest European routes from London's Gatwick Airport (LGW) — most often to a handful of leisure destinations in Greece.

easy jet neo

With just one extended-length neo in EasyJet's fleet so far, this $130 million narrow-body is a hard bird to catch.

easy jet neo

It's the first of 30 new A321s to be delivered to EasyJet, and by far the largest plane in the carrier's all-Airbus fleet.

easy jet neo

EasyJet's neo sports a whopping 235 seats, with most arranged in a 3-3 configuration.

easy jet neo

There's only one class of service available — economy — which affords the carrier quite a capacity boost.

easy jet neo

While every seat's labeled as coach, some are far better than others. Seats 29A and 29F have loads of legroom, since there isn't a seat in front. They're labeled as "Extra Legroom," however, which means you'll need to pay a higher fee to make your pick — about $27 for a 3.5-hour flight from London to Athens (ATH), for example.

easy jet neo

While EasyJet's fares can be quite low, the carrier boosts revenue through various buy-ups, from food and drinks...

easy jet neo

...to larger and extra carry-on and checked bags.

easy jet neo

There are even seat-back advertisements featuring buy-up opportunities — in this case, the carrier's "Hands Free" product, which lets you check your carry-on bag for just $6.50 per flight.

easy jet neo

While you'll be loaded up in a narrow-body plane with more than 200 other holidaymakers, there are certainly worse ways to get where you're going than EasyJet's first A321neo jet.

EasyJet agrees deal with Airbus on planned order for up to 257 A320neo-family jets

By Graham Dunn 2023-10-12T08:09:00+01:00

UK low-cost carrier EasyJet has reached an agreement with Airbus to order a further 157 A320neo-family jets and take purchase rights on 100 more.

Deliveries from the planned order, which is still subject to shareholder approval, would begin in the carrier’s 2029 financial year and run for five years.

The proposed firm order covers 101 A321neos and 56 A320neos.

EasyJet currently has 158 Airbus narrowbodies still on order, with deliveries taking place until the end of its 2028 financial year in September 2028.

However, EasyJet has now converted a further 35 of these from the A320neo to the larger A321neo; it will now take 68 A321neos and 90 A320neos over the coming five years.

Disclosing the order plan in a trading update issued today, EasyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren said: ”This will enable EasyJet’s fleet modernisation and growth to continue beyond 2028 while providing substantial benefits including cost efficiencies and sustainability improvements.”

With its fresh Airbus order, the carrier aims to replace around half its existing fleet of older-generation A320ceos.

EasyJet has entered “exclusive negotiations” with CFM International, which powers its existing Neo fleet, for the supply of Leap-1A engines for the new order.

The airline hopes to secure shareholder approval for the commitment before the end of the calendar year.

If confirmed, it will increase EasyJet’s firm orderbook to 315 aircraft, plus 100 purchase rights, for delivery over the coming decade.

The addition of more of the larger A321neos, together with the replacement of its existing A319 fleet, means EasyJet expects its average aircraft size to increase from 179-seats to a little over 200-seats by 2034.

Under its base-line fleet development plan, EasyJet expects to increase it fleet from 336 today to 464 in 2033.

That plan will see its A319 fleet, which comprises 95 aircraft today, phased out by 2030 and its current generation A320 fleet fall from 172 to 87.

At the same time it will increase its A321neo fleet from 15 to 183 and the number of A320neos from 54 to 194.

19 December 2023

Easyjet orders a further 157 a320neo family aircraft.

easyJet A320neo

Toulouse, 19 December 2023 - easyJet has confirmed a firm order for 157 additional A320neo Family aircraft following shareholder approval. The firm order comprises 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo aircraft and also includes the upsizing of an existing order for 35 A320neo into the larger A321neo . The agreement is part of easyJet’s fleet renewal and upgauging plan and is also bringing substantial sustainability improvements to its business .

“ We are very pleased to be able to confirm this significant order which not only enables easyJet to replace its older aircraft with more efficient aircraft, a core component of our net zero roadmap, but also provides us ability for disciplined growth, including the significant opportunity that upgauging brings, “commented Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet. “ With this order easyJet will be able to continue to cement its leading position at Europe’s primary airports and so we look forward to working in partnership with Airbus in the years to come. ”

“ Airbus is delighted to be accompanying easyJet in its fleet growth and renewal. Its Airbus fleet allows easyJet to differentiate its offering in its competitive market with the most state-of-the-art, modern and comfortable aircraft, ” said Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus. “ easyJet and Airbus both are strong advocates for the aviation sector to de-carbonise. This significant investment into the most fuel efficient and SAF-capable aircraft is a testimony to our joint commitment in this respect. Bravo easyJet, and thank you! ”

The A320neo Family is the world’s most popular single aisle having won over 18,000 orders from nearly 140 customers in all markets . The A321neo is the largest member of Airbus’ A320neo Family, offering unparalleled range and performance. By incorporating new generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo brings a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% fuel savings and CO2 reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximizing passenger comfort in the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky.  As with all Airbus aircraft, the entire A320 Family is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

To date over 5,600 A321neos have been ordered by more than 100 customers across the globe.

easyJet reaches a key fleet milestone in its net zero strategy - with a fifth of its fleet now new-technology A320neo Family aircraft

Story featured image

·        easyJet has taken delivery of its 67 th A320neo Family aircraft this month; making over 20% of the easyJet fleet NEO-technology

·        A320neo Family aircraft use around 15% less fuel than their equivalent predecessors, and have up to 50% noise reduction at take-off, landing and whilst taxiing

·        easyJet has an orderbook for a further 164 A320neo Family aircraft, in addition to the 67 already delivered

·        By October 2024, the fleet is expected to pass 25% new-technology aircraft

easyJet’s fleet now consists of more new-technology, more fuel efficient “NEO” - aircraft than ever before – as the operator took delivery of its 67 th A320neo Family aircraft this month.

As the airline continues its fleet renewal programme, an integral part of its roadmap to net zero, older Airbus A320ceo Family aircraft will be phased out over time and replaced by new-technology aircraft, which are at least 15% more fuel efficient and see up to 50% noise reduction upon taxiing, take-off and landing.

Based on current delivery plans, A320neo Family aircraft will 25% of its overall fleet by October of next year. easyJet has - 19 A320neo Family deliveries expected by the end of 2024 and a further 27 in 2025.

David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet commented:

“The adoption of more efficient technology is the single biggest contributor to reducing emissions in the short term and the roll-out of new neo aircraft is a key part of this.

“We are also continuously looking at our operation each and every day to drive efficiencies which has been demonstrated with the addition of Descent Profile Optimisation (DPO) and Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) – a state of software from Airbus that is being retrofitted on all our aircraft. The two technologies will respectively enable fuel-saving enhancement to the aircraft’s on-board Flight Management System (FMS) and reduce noise impact on the ground.”

Wouter Van Wersch, Airbus President Europe Region & Sales, added:

“As we continue to fulfil easyJet's orders, each A320neo delivery future-proofs the airline's growth as traffic rebounds. Airbus is delighted that the A320neo family aircraft, together with our strong service offering, is laying the foundation of easyJet's decarbonisation journey which is already well underway.”

easyJet is the world’s largest operator of Airbus’ single-aisle aircraft with over 300 planes currently in service, including the A319, A320ceo, A320neo and A321neo. The airline serves over 130 European airports in some 31 countries operating over 1,000 routes.

The baseline A320neo jetliner has a choice of two new-generation engines (the PurePower PW1100G-JM from Pratt and Whitney and the LEAP-1A from CFM International) and features large, fuel-saving wingtip devices known as Sharklets.

Easyjet fleet airbus a320neo cabin interior class configuration and seats layout.

EasyJet allows passengers to pre-select seats by paying a fee during the booking process.

Up Front and Extra Legroom seats are priced higher and come with the Speedy Boarding pass, allowing dedicated check-in and priority boarding.

The cabin is configured in typical 3-3 fashion, with 186 seats — there’s one extra row here compared to the layout of EasyJet’s other A320 s.

The seats are upholstered in black with orange lining.

The cabin looks smart and the design enhances the overall feeling of having more space.

Each seat has a pitch of 29 inches and is 17.5 inches wide.

The tray tables are on the small side, but perfectly adequate for the short-haul route network EasyJet maintains around Europe.

The location and size of the lavatories have been redesigned for a concept on the A320neo now known as SpaceFlex V2.

Essentially, this means two lavatories are now integrated into the rear of the aircraft and replace the right section of the rear galley.

In other words, the cabin crew seat is now also part of the door to the bathroom.

While this can already be seen on a small number of EasyJet’s aircraft, it’ll be featured on all A320neo’s going forward.

Easyjet confirms order for 157 airbus a320neo family aircraft.

easyJet's shareholders approved the order two months following its initial announcement.

  • easyJet's shareholders almost unanimously approved the low-cost carrier's latest Airbus order of 157 firm orders and 100 options.
  • The order allows easyJet to cement its leading position at Europe's primary airports and continue fleet modernization and growth.
  • In its last financial year, easyJet returned to profitability with a net profit of GBP324 million and reinstated dividends to shareholders.

easyJet’s shareholders approved the low-cost carrier’s latest Airbus order, which included 157 firm orders and 100 options, during a meeting at London Luton Airport (LTN). The motion was the only matter on which easyJet’s shareholders voted during the GM, with the shareholders almost unanimously approving the purchase.

Almost unanimous approval of the order

According to easyJet’s filings, 45.93% of the issued share capital (ISC) holders voted on the motion, representing 348.1 million shares. While there were 347.9 million votes to approve the order, 206,958 ISCs voted against it, while 382.447 withheld their say on the matter. The shareholders voted during the airline’s General Meeting (GM) on December 19, 2023, at LTN.

The order was initially announced in October 2023, when the low-cost carrier finalized an agreement with Airbus for 157 A320neo family aircraft, with a further 100 options for the same family. The circular of the vote and the notice of the GM were published to the airline’s shareholders in late November 2023. Johan Lundgren, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of easyJet, stated that the order will allow easyJet to "continue to cement its leading position at Europe’s primary airports and so we look forward to working in partnership with Airbus in the years to come."

Check out all the latest European aviation news here.

At the time of the order announcement, Lundgren said that the purchase would “enable easyJet’s fleet modernisation and growth to continue beyond 2028 while providing substantial benefits including cost efficiencies and sustainability improvements.” Detailing the benefits of the purchase to its shareholders, the low-cost carrier emphasized that it already had 69 A320neo family aircraft, with 158 still on order at the time. Its last new aircraft delivery happened on September 28, when Airbus delivered an A320neo, registered as G-UZLP, to easyJet’s United Kingdom (UK)-based airline on September 28, 2023.

“[The order] provides easyJet with the ability to complete its fleet replacement programme of A319 aircraft and replace approximately half of the A320ceo aircraft, alongside providing the foundation for disciplined growth. The Company is in exclusive negotiations with CFM for the supply of engines for the Proposed Purchase.”

easyJet also emphasized that the commercial agreement with Airbus has favorable financial terms, resulting from “a comprehensive, detailed and competitive process which has been run over the course of the last 12 months.” The process involved Airbus, Boeing, CFM International, and Pratt & Whitney. Furthermore, the order enables further growth “through a combination of incremental aircraft and accelerated upgauging.”

easyJet Plans Future Fleet With Agreement For 250+ More Airbus Narrowbodies

Positive financial results.

In its last financial year (FY) between September 2022 and September 30, 2023, easyJet returned to profitability, ending the period with a net profit of GBP324 million ($412,6 million). Its revenues grew from GBP5.7 billion ($7.2 billion) to GBP8.1 billion ($10.3 billion), with Lundgren reflecting that the group’s record-breaking summer performance demonstrated the success of its strategy, adding that the “demand for easyJet remains strong as customers choose us for our network and value.”

The CEO also said that the company sees a positive outlook, with airline and holiday bookings being up Year-on-Year (YoY) at the time. As a result of the return to profitability and an optimistic outlook, easyJet reinstated dividends to its shareholders, which began at GBP0.45 ($0.57) and will be payable in early 2024. The company said that dividend payouts could rise by up to 20% of its headline profit-after-tax (PAT) result in FY2024.
