Poor Leadership as a Cause of Employee Turnover Essay

There are many reasons for the high rates of employee turnover in certain companies and industries. One of the major reasons is bad bosses. In that regard, there are three main classes of bosses that compel employees to quit. They include the bully boss, the micromanager boss, the workaholic boss, the by-the-numbers boss, and the divisive bosses (Adair 2010). Bad bosses increase employee turnover by lowering the motivation, morale, productivity, and performance of workers. They cause disengagement among employees, job dissatisfaction, and unwillingness to cooperate with other employees in the attainment of organisational goals and objectives (Branham 2012). The largest percentage of the people I Interviewed left because of bad bosses. The behaviours of their supervisors lowered their morale and caused pervasive dissatisfaction because of poor leadership, ineffective interactions and relationships, and negative personalities.

Some employees cited poor interactions ad relationships with their bosses as one of the reasons why they left their organizations. Interactions between employees and supervisors are critical because they determine the quality of communication and the responsiveness between the two parties (Adair 2010). According to the leader-member exchange (LMX) theory, leaders develop different relationships with their employees (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012). In the out-group, relationships are primarily based on the need to fulfil contractual requirements and get the job done. In contrast, in-group relationships surpass the need to fulfil contractual obligations and incorporate symbiotic interactions that involve aspects such empowerment and mentoring (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012). Leader-employee relationships are usually formed after an employee joins an organisation.

The leader offers opportunities that are aimed at evaluating the performance of the employee. The outcomes determine the type of relationship the leader forms with the employee. The LMX theory suggests that the leadership making process should include fair and equal treatment of all employees (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012). It is important for leaders to create strong relationships with their subordinates based on trust and honesty. Such relationships lead to the creation of strong teams that work together to achieve organisational goals (Adair 2010). In contrast, out-group relationships favour certain employees and discriminate against others thus resulting in a divisive workforce that exhibits low performance and productivity.

Some employees agreed that poor relationships with their bosses originated from actions such as bullying, humiliation, intimidation, ineffective communication, and over management. Certain employees dealt with bosses who played favourites and as a result caused divisions among employees. Some employees were given more responsibilities and duties while others were not. Opportunities for growth and development were given selectively by the supervisors. Equitable assignment of roles and responsibilities as well as formation of high-quality relationships between bosses and employees is important in preventing employee turnover and increasing employee motivation and job satisfaction (Branham 2012). Certain bosses were detached and spent very little assisting employees address the various issues they faced in their jobs.

The quality of leadership exhibited by leaders determines the level of employee motivation and job satisfaction (Branham 2012). Leaders adopt different styles depending on their personality traits, competencies, and experiences. Many employees said that they left their jobs because their bosses exhibited poor leadership that excluded them in decision making and that did not value their commitment and hard work. According to the normative decision model, leaders use three main approaches during decision making. These approaches include autocratic processes, consultative processes, and group processes (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012). Many employees cited the use of autocratic processes by heir leaders during decision making. Autocratic processes involve the collection of information from employees by the leader and its subsequent utilization to make decisions without the involvement of employees (Pless & Maak 2012).

In many cases, leaders do not tell their employees the reasons for collecting certain information. Exclusion of employees from the decision-making process causes dissatisfaction and low morale because consultative and group processes involve the contributions of employees to varying degrees (Branham 2012). In the consultative process, the boss shares the problem with employees and asks for their individual opinions. The decision may or may not reflect the contributions of employees. On the other hand, group process involves the active participation of employees (Pless & Maak 2012). The boss only acts as the coordinator of the discussion that employees participate in to generate solutions to specific problems.

Many employees agreed that they left their jobs because their bosses did not involve them in decision making processes even in situations that had direct effect on their jobs and wellbeing. Certain employees stated that exclusion from decision making made them feel unvalued by their organisation. Employee participation allows bosses to leverage human resources by utilizing the varied skills and experiences possessed by employees (Branham 2012). On the other hand, employees feel that they are valued and respected by their organisation. As a result, they become more committed to their work and perform better. In addition, they become highly motivated because they feel in control of their jobs and careers. It is important for leaders to give employees opportunities to contribute in a meaningful way towards the attainment of organisational goals (Pless & Maak 2012).

Active participation increase motivation, job satisfaction, performance, productivity, and lowers employee turnover (Ikor 2012). It is critical for bosses to make employees feel that their jobs have great impacts toward the growth and development of their organisations. Good leaders allow employees to participate in organisational decision making in order to develop their individual decision-making skills (Sandler 2003). Studies have shown that organisations that involve employees in decision making reported higher rates of decision acceptance among employees than in organisations that exclude them (Ikor 2012). In addition, they report higher quality of decisions due to the incorporation of creative and innovative ideas from different employees.

Another reason that compelled employees to quit their jobs was the personalities exhibited by their bosses and their effects on their jobs. The personalities of leaders determine how they communicate and interact with their subordinate as well as how they treat them (Ikor 2012). Some employees stated that their bosses had bad attitudes and personalities that affected how the communicated and interacted. Certain bosses were supportive and relationship-oriented. On the other hand, others were critical, non supportive, and goal-oriented. Employees who quit cited the latter situation as the cause of their departure from their organisations. According to the contingency model, leaders posses dominant behavioural tendencies that determine how they relate with different employees (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012).

These tendencies are critical to the success of leaders because they are either effective or ineffective in various situations. Relationship-oriented leaders focus on developing good relationships with all their employees because good interactions improve task performance and employee morale (Branham 2012). On the other hand, good relationships enhance the quality of communication between leaders and their subordinates. Poor leaders focus on the achievement of organisational goals and ignore the importance of good leader-follower relationships (Ikor 2012). As a result, they focus on procedures and processes and ignore employee welfare. Employees who encountered this problem stated that the effects of negative personalities in their bosses included increased work-related stress, low performance, absenteeism, low morale due to pervasive negative feedback, and miscommunication.

They found it difficult to talk to their bosses about changes that they experienced while fulfilling their duties. This breakdown of communication led to low quality wok because employees got stuck and could not ask for support from their bosses. In the long term, they lost interest in their jobs because they were no longer motivated to work hard, innovate, and generate creative ideas that could improve their output. Their bosses were not interested in their opinions because they looked at them as mere subordinates whose responsibility was to work and make money for their organisations.

The negative exhibited by leaders also resulted in poor relationships that led to the development of negative attitudes by employees. According to contingency theory, situational favourability is an important aspect that leaders should put into consideration when dealing with employees (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012). Leader-follower relations are critical in determining the favourability of different situations. Cooperation between leaders and their subordinates leads to development of loyalty and trust (Ikor 2012). In contrasts, antagonism between leaders and employees leads to mistrust and lack of loyalty. The employees that left their jobs stated that their bosses were highly critical, unfriendly, and exercised their power over them inappropriately.

The long-term effects of their bosses’ behaviours include lack of loyalty and respect, poor decision making, lack of cooperation, and low performance. The employees did not get any satisfaction from doing their jobs because they were not appreciated and the negative feedback given by their bosses discouraged them and lowered their morale. Good leaders use different styles in dealing with different employees and situations (Branham 2012). They are flexible in the application of their leadership styles. Flexible leaders are more acceptable to employees because modern work environments are dynamic and therefore require constant adjustment to change. According to path-goal theory, there are four leader behaviours namely directive leadership, supportive leadership, participative leadership, and achievement leadership (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012).

Great leaders incorporate different aspects of these behaviours in their leadership. The theory also suggests that there are two classes of follower variables namely follower satisfaction and follower perception of their capabilities sin relation to their jobs. Employees support leaders whose actions increase their satisfaction with their jobs (Ikor 2012). Leaders who give employees freedom to make decisions and who offer positive feedback increase their employees’ levels of satisfaction because they make them feel in control of their jobs and careers (Sandler 2003).

Many employees leave their jobs because of bad bosses. I interviewed several employees who had left their jobs because of bad bosses and collected information regarding their reasons for leaving. The reasons why they left included poor interactions and relationships, poor leadership, and negative personalities. Their bosses treated the unfairly, looked down on them, offered negative feedback that affected their morale, and exclude the in decision making processes. Their participation in matters that affected their jobs and wellbeing was limited and their bosses made all decisions without contacting them. This led to high levels of dissatisfaction with their jobs because they did not feel valued by their organisations. In addition, they felt that their commitment and hard work was not contributing to the attainment of organisational goals and objectives in a meaningful way.

This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. Occupying a leadership position is not the same thing as leading. To lead, you must be able to connect, motivate, and inspire a sense of ownership of shared objectives. Heightening your capacity to lead others requires being able to see how you think and act, and how your behavior affects others. Leading well requires a continuous journey of personal development. Yet people in leadership roles often eschew the long and challenging work of deepening self-insight in favor of chasing after management “tools”— preferably the “quick ’n’ easy” kind, such as personality type assessments that reduce employees to a few simplistic behavioral tendencies. Tools can be handy aids to good leadership. But none of them can take the place of fearless introspection, feedback seeking, and committed efforts to behavioral change for greater effectiveness and increased positive impact on others.

When you’re an individual contributor, your ability to use your technical expertise to deliver results is paramount. Once you’ve advanced into a leadership role, however, the toolkit that you relied on to deliver individual results rarely equips you to succeed through others. Beware of falling into the logical trap of “if I can do this work well, I should be able to lead a team of people who do this work.” This would be true if leading others were akin to operating a more powerful version of the same machinery you operated previously. But it’s not; machinery doesn’t perform better or worse based on what it thinks about you and how you make it feel, while humans do .

However, one fact remains the same, if a leader does not encompass the ability to lead and inspire others the results will be disastrous for business organizations. There are many internal causes for poor leadership within a business. It is all in how the business handles those causes that helps bring the business up on top.

One of the internal causes of poor leadership within a business is lack of character. Without the ability to have strong character traits that include ethics, a leader lacks the ability to lead with trust, confidence in their skills as a leader, and loyalty that is critical from employees. It is important to remember that a leader represents the team as a whole. So, when a leader lacks the character to bring the team in a positive light, the whole team suffers.

Another internal cause of poor leadership is lack of vision. The leader of a brand must be able to accurately, and efficiently, define and explain the vision for the organization. When a vision is lacking that clear definition and communication to the workers of the organization the executive leadership will end up having issues of compliance within the organization. Even more so, without a vision a business cannot strive towards developed strategies or targets. The lack of vision can also lead to poor branding. With poor branding, it is a reflection of the leadership team because that shows that the leadership of the organization did not take the time necessary to spread the vision to all workers and ensure that they understood what the company is striving for.

When looking at lack of execution, poor leadership is almost synonymous. When someone is in a leadership position, they must be able to follow through with their commitments and execute them to the level necessary to showcase efficiency. When employing leadership in execution, it is key to remember that leadership focuses on using the required tools to solidify that the largest of errors are correctly manage and the largest of opportunities are taken advantage of to avoid failure. Then, on top of poor execution, if the organization has a flawed strategy to begin with there is already a weakness evident within the leadership.

The foundation of an organization is built off of proper management skills, which usually stems from the human resources department. The human resources department typically handles all of the recruiting, training, retaining employees, and ensuring that everyone is completing their job correctly. So, if human resources, or a manager in charge, is failing to correct those mistakes that are detrimental to the company, how is the company supposed to grow in the face of negativity? With lack of proper management skills, the organization may start to breed a toxic culture within the work environment. When looking at businesses, the core to building a productive environment is to keep the culture positive. The leaders of the business must be able to identify those people, or team members, that are creating that negative environment and talk to them or decided whether or not to keep them on the team. It is also important to determine if actual cultures coming from prospective employee’s backgrounds will work well together.

When examining poor leadership it is also important to look at what type of advice is being provided to the leaders and team members of the business. It is key for leaders to recognize that they are not the expert, or end all be all, to an organization. As a leader, one must always be willing to learn and accept constructive criticism. When a leader shuts off outside input, they are shutting off their ability to grow as leaders. Just as well, as a leader, it is one’s ability to reach down the ladder and pull those below them up to their level in order to help others grow. Many times, especially when one reaches a CEO Positon, they forget that they once were at the bottom of the organization. Also, the higher the rank, the more likely the leader tends to forget how important every person is to the success of the organization. As a leader, it is important to recognize every link that comprises the anchor that holds the organization down and stabilized. Without doing so, team members begin to feel devalued and like they are not appreciated with all of the work that they accomplish. With that type of attitude, team members will be less likely to put their full effort into helping the business maintain their progress and potentially grow into something bigger than itself.

When running a business with several employees, it is important to delegate the work equally amongst everyone. As a leader, one does not want one employee to feel more overwhelmed than the employee sitting next to him or her. With this type of work environment, it can create uncalled for overtime and overworking of each team member. Again, this leads to an employee feeling underappreciated, and ultimately, like they are not a vital part of the business.

Each component mentioned above touches on an aspect that calls for poor leadership effecting a business negatively. Without proper leadership in a business, it is evident that a business will not be able to run properly. When looking at a business, it can be viewed as a machine. Without all of the working parts, the machine does not run well or in some cases at all. Then, the machine needs continuous oiling to keep it running smoothly. The actual machine is the leader of the business. The parts of the machine signify the team members, the employees and their importance to the proper workings of a business. The oil is the organizations ability to keep building on current employee’s skills that make the business what it is, in addition to, bringing new people on board to keep the company growing in a positive direction. The act of leadership can tricky. Some people have the ability to lead others while other people would rather follow. It is up to the business to identify the leaders with excellent leadership and find jobs that suit those people with poor leadership skills. Without doing so, the business runs the risk of falling apart.

In the modern-day business environment, organizations are constantly forced to exhibit innovation and enhanced performance so as to remain relevant and profitable in an ever-increasingly competitive arena. The input of both the individuals and groups in the organization is invaluable to the achievement of organizational goals. Whereas the potential of groups and teams is monumental and crucial and as such indispensable to the organization, there comes a time when the fate of the organization may hang on the very shoulders of an individual.

This study shall be based on the argument that the dysfunction of leadership at the head of a company can bring a multimillion-dollar company to its knees. The study shall begin by giving a brief outlook of the environment in which leaders are to function. It shall then proceed to define the aspects that may make these leaders turn around the fate of the organization. A discussion articulating the conditions under which the person may fail in his attempts to impact the organization positively shall also be given. This shall be in an effort to elaborate that good leadership ability is mandatory for an organization to achieve maximum potential.

Management often refers to the effective and efficient utilization of resources that are available to an organization to achieve organizational goals and objectives. It involves planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the organization’s activities and resources. Leadership on the other hand most often refers to a process through which one person uses the help and support of others towards achieving a particular goal or task. In the article by Warren Bennis “The Leadership Advantage”, the author aims at highlighting the factors and characteristics that complement a good leader and consequently, effective leadership. He descriptively states that several core attributes make for a good leader. They include being a knowledgeable professional in the field of expertise, having a proven track record of achieving set goals and objectives, and the ability to motivate and delegate effectively. Leaders also ought to be able to cultivate and identify talent and exhibit sound judgment even under pressure (22).

Bennis further contends that the success of any organization depends mainly on the effectiveness and ability to inspire its leaders (20). Studies have it that the stock prices of well-led companies increased by over 900% in 10 years as opposed to a bare 74% growth recorded by those companies that lacked good leadership. This fact effectively underscores the importance of good leadership in any organization.

The article however does caution that a leader is deemed worthless if he lacks the backing and support of a team. It is therefore important that all leaders work towards cultivating and generating intellectual capital for their firms. This duly gives them a competitive advantage over other competitors in the market. In most organizations, only a fraction of the capability of the workforce is utilized. Bennis acknowledges that managers cannot gain much by coercing the employees to work harder. Instead, an increase in productivity can be achieved if the leaders invest highly in retraining programs, ensure availability of essential resources, and provide motivational attributes like bonuses, promotions, and even pay increments to act as incentives (23).

An exemplary leader should ensure that his organization has a sense of purpose and is working towards the achievement of some organizational goals. He/she should also set out to generate and sustain trust between the administration, employees and clients. Such endeavors heighten the levels of optimism within the organization all the while boosting employee’s morale and guarantee future success in all organizational endeavors.

Creativity is one of the skills in a leader that can be used to make a difference in the organization. Over the last decades, creativity and innovation have progressively become the defining factor of successful and failing organizations. Shavinina asserts that this innovation has become paramount to the survival of organizations(607). She goes on to note that on most occasions, innovation springs from an individual’s initiative. It can thus be argued out that an individual possessing creativity and innovation can use this ability to positively impact the organization. However, many organizations still fail to grasp the whole concept which in turn fails in their organizations. Rick Wagoner reflected a lack of strategic oversight in his term as the CEO of General Motors. This flaw saw the stocks prices of this organization fall by 90%. This incident was highly attributed to the fact that his strategies were simply not forward-looking and as a result, “GM lagged behind in terms of competition as regarding cutting costs and innovativeness” (Ellington, 27).

In certain circumstances, the preservation of the corporate culture of the organization can make a difference in the organization. This is especially so when the culture has been responsible for the successful execution of tasks in the organization over a long time. This being the case, it is obvious that the success of an organization can be jeopardized by any move that threatens to weaken the corporate culture of the organization. Morgan states that corporate cultures develop “as an ethos created and sustained by social processes so as to bury out differences (128).” This means that the culture is a means by which the various disparate members of the organization can forge some form of alliance and thus work towards it. Jenster and Hussey assert that a strong culture may be further reinforced in an organization by a strong charismatic figure (201). Andrew Carnegie stated that “you do not have to be expert in your company’s field to be able to lead a company brilliantly”. He openly gave credit to his management team claiming that they had more knowledge in the steel manufacturing process than he did. His honesty as a leader played a pivotal role in motivating his team. In addition to this, it fostered an organizational culture that reflected on his own respect towards his employees.

During the past recessionary period, the world witnessed as major financial institutions especially in the United States failed. Business analysts were quick to diffuse the situation claiming that it was due to poor regulatory policies in the banking sector. However, George states that poor leadership was the main cause of this demise (96). He claims that up to date, many of the bank leaders still avoid taking responsibility for their actions which led to the failure of the businesses. It is a known fact that most banks prior to the financial crisis were involved in hazardous business practices. In an audit report presented by the World Bank, “Lehman Brothers investment bank failed due to bank management’s lack of oversight and failure to control risk in its loan portfolio.” Richard Fuld the CEO of Lehman Brothers investment bank took excessive risks and exercised poor management which consequently pulled the bank down to its knees. Sahskin articulates that actions that produce a feeling of charisma towards a leader figure will invariably lead to an increase in the likelihood of the followers to ape the actions of the leader (178). In this case, the employees would have easily followed the footsteps of their leaders no matter how risky they were which consequently led to the closure of this bank.

At the present, most economies in the world are working towards recovering from the credit crunch that hit almost all countries in the world. It is a reasonable assumption that most organizations were forced to make changes that included cutting on costs or laying off employees so as to remain profitable. In such times, there is need for a flame of optimism to be fanned in the organization. Bolden et. al state that an optimistic nature is one of the defining behaviors associated with a transformational leader (16). A person who can enthusiastically talk about the needs of the organization and draw a compelling image of the bright future that all in the organization can look forward to is capable of making a difference in the organization. In all organizations, there arise contentious issues which elicit different reactions at some point in time. How these issues are diffused may spell out the difference between the subsequent success or failure of the organization. The presence of a leader who can diplomatically manage the crises may be crucial to the success of the organization. Diplomacy entails the using of power and authority carefully to achieve positive outcomes by being unanimous or arriving at a consensus (London, 259).

It should be noted that leaders are first of all human and as such, they too are subjected to making mistakes. However, there are situations whereby some leaders have overstepped their organizational boundaries regarding their duties and responsibilities. Pfeffer and Sutton state that “Most corporate disasters and financial scandals, including those perpetrated by Jeff Skilling and Andy Fastow at Enron, Al Dunlap at Sunbeam, Hank Greenberg at the large insurer AIG, and Dennis Kozlowski at Tyco, happened not simply because these people were greedy, immoral, or unethical, but because such people were in leadership positions with so much control that no one could challenge them” (107). Such assumptions from leaders not only frustrate the employees but consequently cost the organizations that these leaders represent hefty losses.

On the same note, such problems often arise due to the fact that these leaders have excessive control over the decision-making processes as well as the operational procedures established by an organization. Pfeffer and Sutton acclaim that when such leaders make decisions, they assume that their decisions are better than the rest. As a result, the employees lack that sense of involvement in the organization and at times may not follow through with such decisions leading to the failure of the organization. Therefore, giving too much control to leaders may lead to fallouts during the implementation of business prospects causing losses or even less productivity.

In addition to this, ignorance, lack of proper communication channels as well as failure to address diversity in any business environment can be detrimental to the results and subsequently the success of an organization. In a recent case in Penang, the chief Minister admitted to turning down a multimillion-dollar investment in his country due to the fact that he feared that he could not provide the investor with the 1,000 engineers that the investment required to kick off its operations in the region. A good and effective leader would never let such an opportunity pass by due to such a flimsy excuse. This decision made by Lim Guan Eng showed a lack of oversight from the leader as well as ignorance since other companies related in the same field such as Intel, AMD, Bosch among others have invested in Penang and have employed tens of thousands of engineers. In addition to this, the universities in the region also produce a lot of engineers not to mention the fact that he would have simply liaison with the human resources ministry in order to find the necessary engineering resources required.

Reflectively, Motorola recorded losses of over $345 million at the end of 2008 due to poor decision-making by the financial managers. Instead of working on new products like smartphones which are high in demand, they decided to invest in Sigma Finance Corporation. This investment has been costing Motorola a lot of money with no hope of returns especially now that most people have lost confidence in the money market and are still recovering from the recession. The decision to invest in the financial sector especially during the recession shows a lot of ignorance from the leaders and also indicates that the company might soon head into financial constraints due to poor performance in the electronics industry. Also, it shows that the managers in the Company are subjecting the fate of the company to poor decisions which may in the end lead to its failure. It is therefore imperative that the leaders in all organizations ensure that they are well versed with the current economic trends in a global context. This is because lack of insight on how the competition works, resource allocation and distribution, and financial bearings by leaders may have devastating effects on the success and survival of the company; attributes which may see an organization fail.

This study has argued that the role of a leader can make a difference in the organization if properly directed. The paper has discussed the prominent aspects in present-day organizations that make the role of such individuals more pronounced as compared to past times. It has been proposed that an individual possessing certain character traits that are mostly attributed to leaders can make a difference in an organization. However, it has been articulated that some of these traits can be detrimental to the organization’s beings. As such, a compromise should be struck to ensure that those skills and traits which yield positive trends are capitalized on while the negative traits are minimized. From the discussions presented in this paper, it can be authoritatively stated that while the role of the leaders is crucial to the success of the organization, it should always be looked at with respect to its effect on the entire team since the organizational goals can only be effectively achieved with the support of all the members of the organization.

What to know about the crisis of violence, politics and hunger engulfing Haiti

A long-simmering crisis over Haiti’s ability to govern itself, particularly after a series of natural disasters and an increasingly dire humanitarian emergency, has come to a head in the Caribbean nation, as its de facto president remains stranded in Puerto Rico and its people starve and live in fear of rampant violence. 

The chaos engulfing the country has been bubbling for more than a year, only for it to spill over on the global stage on Monday night, as Haiti’s unpopular prime minister, Ariel Henry, agreed to resign once a transitional government is brokered by other Caribbean nations and parties, including the U.S.

But the very idea of a transitional government brokered not by Haitians but by outsiders is one of the main reasons Haiti, a nation of 11 million, is on the brink, according to humanitarian workers and residents who have called for Haitian-led solutions. 

“What we’re seeing in Haiti has been building since the 2010 earthquake,” said Greg Beckett, an associate professor of anthropology at Western University in Canada.

What is happening in Haiti and why?

In the power vacuum that followed the assassination of democratically elected President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Henry, who was prime minister under Moïse, assumed power, with the support of several nations, including the U.S. 

When Haiti failed to hold elections multiple times — Henry said it was due to logistical problems or violence — protests rang out against him. By the time Henry announced last year that elections would be postponed again, to 2025, armed groups that were already active in Port-au-Prince, the capital, dialed up the violence.

Even before Moïse’s assassination, these militias and armed groups existed alongside politicians who used them to do their bidding, including everything from intimidating the opposition to collecting votes . With the dwindling of the country’s elected officials, though, many of these rebel forces have engaged in excessively violent acts, and have taken control of at least 80% of the capital, according to a United Nations estimate. 

Those groups, which include paramilitary and former police officers who pose as community leaders, have been responsible for the increase in killings, kidnappings and rapes since Moïse’s death, according to the Uppsala Conflict Data Program at Uppsala University in Sweden. According to a report from the U.N . released in January, more than 8,400 people were killed, injured or kidnapped in 2023, an increase of 122% increase from 2022.

“January and February have been the most violent months in the recent crisis, with thousands of people killed, or injured, or raped,” Beckett said.

Armed groups who had been calling for Henry’s resignation have already attacked airports, police stations, sea ports, the Central Bank and the country’s national soccer stadium. The situation reached critical mass earlier this month when the country’s two main prisons were raided , leading to the escape of about 4,000 prisoners. The beleaguered government called a 72-hour state of emergency, including a night-time curfew — but its authority had evaporated by then.

Aside from human-made catastrophes, Haiti still has not fully recovered from the devastating earthquake in 2010 that killed about 220,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless, many of them living in poorly built and exposed housing. More earthquakes, hurricanes and floods have followed, exacerbating efforts to rebuild infrastructure and a sense of national unity.

Since the earthquake, “there have been groups in Haiti trying to control that reconstruction process and the funding, the billions of dollars coming into the country to rebuild it,” said Beckett, who specializes in the Caribbean, particularly Haiti. 

Beckett said that control initially came from politicians and subsequently from armed groups supported by those politicians. Political “parties that controlled the government used the government for corruption to steal that money. We’re seeing the fallout from that.”

Haiti Experiences Surge Of Gang Violence

Many armed groups have formed in recent years claiming to be community groups carrying out essential work in underprivileged neighborhoods, but they have instead been accused of violence, even murder . One of the two main groups, G-9, is led by a former elite police officer, Jimmy Chérizier — also known as “Barbecue” — who has become the public face of the unrest and claimed credit for various attacks on public institutions. He has openly called for Henry to step down and called his campaign an “armed revolution.”

But caught in the crossfire are the residents of Haiti. In just one week, 15,000 people have been displaced from Port-au-Prince, according to a U.N. estimate. But people have been trying to flee the capital for well over a year, with one woman telling NBC News that she is currently hiding in a church with her three children and another family with eight children. The U.N. said about 160,000 people have left Port-au-Prince because of the swell of violence in the last several months. 

Deep poverty and famine are also a serious danger. Gangs have cut off access to the country’s largest port, Autorité Portuaire Nationale, and food could soon become scarce.

Haiti's uncertain future

A new transitional government may dismay the Haitians and their supporters who call for Haitian-led solutions to the crisis. 

But the creation of such a government would come after years of democratic disruption and the crumbling of Haiti’s political leadership. The country hasn’t held an election in eight years. 

Haitian advocates and scholars like Jemima Pierre, a professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, say foreign intervention, including from the U.S., is partially to blame for Haiti’s turmoil. The U.S. has routinely sent thousands of troops to Haiti , intervened in its government and supported unpopular leaders like Henry.

“What you have over the last 20 years is the consistent dismantling of the Haitian state,” Pierre said. “What intervention means for Haiti, what it has always meant, is death and destruction.”

In fact, the country’s situation was so dire that Henry was forced to travel abroad in the hope of securing a U.N. peacekeeping deal. He went to Kenya, which agreed to send 1,000 troops to coordinate an East African and U.N.-backed alliance to help restore order in Haiti, but the plan is now on hold . Kenya agreed last October to send a U.N.-sanctioned security force to Haiti, but Kenya’s courts decided it was unconstitutional. The result has been Haiti fending for itself. 

“A force like Kenya, they don’t speak Kreyòl, they don’t speak French,” Pierre said. “The Kenyan police are known for human rights abuses . So what does it tell us as Haitians that the only thing that you see that we deserve are not schools, not reparations for the cholera the U.N. brought , but more military with the mandate to use all kinds of force on our population? That is unacceptable.”  

Henry was forced to announce his planned resignation from Puerto Rico, as threats of violence — and armed groups taking over the airports — have prevented him from returning to his country.

Now that Henry is to stand down, it is far from clear what the armed groups will do or demand next, aside from the right to govern. 

“It’s the Haitian people who know what they’re going through. It’s the Haitian people who are going to take destiny into their own hands. Haitian people will choose who will govern them,” Chérizier said recently, according to The Associated Press .

Haitians and their supporters have put forth their own solutions over the years, holding that foreign intervention routinely ignores the voices and desires of Haitians. 

In 2021, both Haitian and non-Haitian church leaders, women’s rights groups, lawyers, humanitarian workers, the Voodoo Sector and more created the Commission to Search for a Haitian Solution to the Crisis . The commission has proposed the “ Montana Accord ,” outlining a two-year interim government with oversight committees tasked with restoring order, eradicating corruption and establishing fair elections.
