Basketball Essay for Students and Children

500+ essay on basketball.

The game of basketball has truly become global in the last few years. The game is currently popular in the United States. Also, it is described by many as an American game because of the fun and competitive element in it. Also, this is one of the games which is played indoors and still caters to billions of fans around the world. This game was Dr. James Naismith from Canada. Initially, he invented the game by using a rectangular pitch which was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Additionally, the court includes a free throw line which is 12 feet long. In basketball essay, students will get to know about the different components that make the game of basketball special.

Basketball Essay

It is a team game that has gained immense popularity. Also, the game is played with the help of a ball and the ball is shot into the basket that is positioned horizontally. So, the objective in the game is to shoot the ball and score the maximum points. This game is played by 2 teams that constitute a total of 5 players each. Also, the game is played on a marked rectangular floor that has a basket on both the ends.

Originally, basketball was played using a soccer ball. Also, it was James Naismith that used a peach basket which ha ad a nonhollow bottom. So, this basket was nailed at a height of 10 ft. above the ground and on an elevated track. If you consider the manual removal of the ball from the basket a drawback then the bottom was removed to and it took the shape of modern-day baskets. Also, dribbling was not part of the game initially. Eventually, it evolved till 1950 by which the balls got better shape due to manufacturing.

Additionally, the orange ball was evolved from the brown ball. The brown ball was used in the beginning as it was thought that the ball is more visible. By 1996, the peach baskets used were replaced by metal hoops on the backboard.

Basketball Game

At the start of the game, a referee tosses the ball at the center of the court between two players. One player from either team try to get their hands on the ball and the ball is passed on to the teammates. For scoring a point, a team needs to shoot the ball through the basket. If a shot is scored from a distance that is closer to the basket than the 3 point line than it fetches 2 points. Also, if the ball is shot from the distance behind 3 point line, it fetches 3 points. So, the team that has a maximum number of points is declared the winner.

In case of a draw, there may be additional time allotted to both the teams. In the game, a player is cannot move if he is holding the ball. The player needs to dribble, otherwise, it is considered as a foul. Likewise, when there is a physical contact that affects the other team then it counted as a physical foul.

Basketball is game played with a maintained and carefully marked court. It is a team sport that is commonly found in many different areas.

Basketball can be a game between two individuals or, in the case of professional games, it is played between two opposing teams consisting of five players in each team. The score is determined by hitting the basket of each other’s teams.

Due to the demand for heavy physicality from its players, basketball is highly favored. In this essay on basketball, the several health benefits of playing this sport are discussed:

Basketball is essential in promoting cardiovascular health among its players. It is immensely helpful for one’s heart health. Due to the game’s constant locomotion, the heart rate shows an increase. Thus, basketball lowers the risk of stroke and other heart diseases.

Basketball is supremely effective in burning calories. Due to its constant, quick movements of running and jumping, basketball acts as a great way of working out and can drastically burn calories.

Improving Practice and Performance in Basketball

Basketball is ranked in the top three team sports for participation in the Americas, Australia, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific nations, making it one of the most popular team sports worldwide [ 1 ]. The physical demands and high popularity of basketball present a wide range of potential applications in society. At one end, basketball may offer a vehicle to combat high inactivity rates and reduce economic health burdens for government officials and health administrators in many countries due to the popularity of the game combined with the evidence supporting recreational basketball eliciting intense physical demands with low perceptual demand [ 2 ]. At the other end, professional basketball competitions have emerged in over 100 countries with more than 70,000 professional players globally [ 3 ], creating a lucrative business that provides legitimate career pathways for players and entertainment for billions of people. Despite the wide range in application, it is surprising how little research has been conducted in basketball relative to other sports. For instance, a rudimentary search on PubMed showed basketball to yield considerably less returns than other sports with a similar global reach and comparable returns to sports governed in less regions of the world ( Table 1 ). Consequently, we sought to edit a Special Issue on “Improving Practice and Performance in Basketball” to provide a collection of studies from basketball researchers across the world and increase available evidence on pertinent topics in the sport. In total, 40 researchers from 16 institutions or professional bodies across nine countries contributed 10 studies in the Special Issue.

Returns on Scopus for basketball relative to other sports.

Note: Search conducted on August 9th 2019 via https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ and was restricted to past five years. * The number of countries identified as members by the international governing body; † field hockey included 137 member countries, while ice hockey included 76 member countries; ‡ rugby union included 119 member countries, while rugby league included 68 member countries.

Most research conducted in basketball has focused on athletic populations. For instance, a review of the 228 studies returned on PubMed for “basketball” in 2019 (up to August 9th) indicates over 25% of studies focused on the incidence, treatment, rehabilitation, or screening of injuries, while 11% of studies described physical, fitness, or functional attributes in competitive basketball players. These trends emphasize the strong interest in understanding injury prevention and treatment in basketball, as well as attributes which may underpin successful players, both of which are oriented towards optimizing player and team performance. Regarding enhancing performance, an increasingly popular field of research in basketball is examining monitoring methods (7% of PubMed studies in 2019) to better understand demands placed on players across the season and provide evidence for decision-making regarding player management. Several reviews have recently been published highlighting the interest in quantifying game [ 4 ] and training demands [ 5 ], using heart rate monitoring [ 6 ], and applying microsensors to measure player workloads [ 7 ] in competitive basketball. Available monitoring technologies provide basketball coaches and high-performance staff with a plethora of data regarding player fitness, workloads, and fatigue status to inform decisions regarding training prescription and recovery opportunities for minimizing injury risk and optimizing performance. In turn, basketball research has readily used game-related statistics (3% of PubMed studies in 2019) to describe player and team performance, which provide an expansive reservoir of data, usually publicly available, to link outcomes of interest to performance. Consequently, our Special Issue was open to research exploring various current topics that have potential to impact practice in basketball.

In keeping with the recent trends in basketball research, the Special Issue contains two reviews with one focused on exploring the utility of various monitoring strategies to detect player fatigue [ 8 ] and the other identifying issues to consider around the extensive travelling requirements in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the premier global basketball competition [ 9 ]. Both reviews highlight the practical aspects relating fatigue and travel in basketball, including potential implications for injury, workload management, recovery, and assessment in players. Furthermore, two applied studies in the Special Issue examine workload monitoring in basketball, with one exploring the impact of game scheduling on accelerometer-derived workload [ 10 ] and the other examining changes in jump kinetics and perceptual workload across the season [ 11 ]. An additional three studies in the Special Issue identified game-related statistics explaining game outcomes and regional differences in various elite competitions (Olympics [ 12 ], EuroBasket [ 13 ], and Continental Championships [ 14 ]). The remaining three studies described physical [ 15 , 16 ] and skill [ 17 ] attributes in various player samples. It should also be noted our Special Issue addresses an important issue of increasing research in female athletes, who have traditionally been under-represented in the literature compared to male basketball players, with seven of the eight original studies (88%) containing female basketball players.

The immediate future of basketball research in high-performance settings is highlighted by issues faced in practice. Specifically, key players are missing games or being rested for “load management” in the NBA to reduce player injury risk, despite some initial evidence suggesting greater rest during the regular season (6 ± 1 vs 1 ± 1 games) does not reduce injury incidence or performance in the playoffs [ 18 ]. Likewise, condensed game schedules [ 19 ] and the total minutes played in individual games [ 20 ] have been shown to have no significant effects on injury risk in NBA players. In contrast, other research suggests the total number of games played in a season impacts injury risk in the NBA [ 21 ], highlighting the need for further research on this topic to gather a definitive understanding regarding the effects of managing player workloads on injury risk. In fact, more research needs to build upon the extensive descriptive evidence already available and identify modifiable factors contributing to injuries in basketball players for coaches and high-performance staff to control risk as much as possible. In addition to injury, future basketball research should seek to further examine the efficacy of logical and practical intervention strategies on player performance. For example, an increasing number of studies are examining the utility of different training approaches, including resistance training [ 22 ], court-based conditioning [ 23 ], and games-based drills [ 5 ], as well as nutritional strategies [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ] and recovery practices [ 28 ] on performance outcomes. Furthermore, it is integral for future research assessing player performance to use basketball-specific assessments. In this regard, more research is recognizing the need for greater specificity in measuring performance in basketball, with an increased number of studies exploring the utility of basketball-specific testing protocols to assess relevant physical attributes [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ] as well as in-game statistics [ 33 ] and workloads [ 34 ] to quantify player performance in a robust manner with increased application to actual competition.

Essay on Basketball

Basketball is a team sport, which is immensely popularity and played with the help of a ball that is shot into a basket positioned horizontally. It is commonly played in rural as well as urban schools and colleges. The objective of shooting the ball is to score points by following certain rules of the game. The game is played by two teams constituting five players. It is played on a marked rectangular floor with baskets on both the ends. Basketball is one of the most popular games of America. To be a good basketball player, one must have good aim to shoot, good skills to jump, be quick and have good ball handling skills.

A referee tosses the ball at the center of the court between the two players from each team. The player who gets hands on the ball passes it to his teammate. To score a goal, a team has to shoot the ball through the basket. If a basket is scored from a distance closer to the three-point line, 2 points are awarded to the team. If a basket is scored from a distance behind the three-point line than 3 points are awarded to the team. The team with maximum a number of points by the end of the game is the winner. However, in case of a draw, additional time may be allotted. A player advances towards the basket while running, dribbling or passing the ball to another teammate. A player is not allowed to move holding the ball without dribbling it. Similarly, a physical contact that disrupts the member or members of other team is counted as a foul. The fouled player is awarded a free throw.

Basketball is a game of techniques and positioning. Passing, shooting and dribbling have to be done in appropriate manner. Players have to be in their right position to offend and defend to achieve or prevent a goal. Height of the team members gives an advantage in shooting. Such members are positioned appropriately at the ‘center’, ‘power forward’ and ‘small forward’ positions. The shorter players or those who have the best ball handling skills and speed are positioned at ‘point ground’ or ‘shooting guard’.

The National Baseball Association has featured many famous players including George Mikan, the first dominating big man’, ball-handling wizard Bob Cousy and defensive genius Bill Russell. These three men are always credited for uplifting the professional game of basketball to its highest level of popularity.

Essays in Basketball Analytics

Keshri, Suraj Kumar

With the increasing popularity and competition in professional basketball in the past decade, data driven decision has emerged as a big competitive edge. The advent of high frequency player tracking data from SportVU has enabled a rigorous analysis of player abilities and interactions that was not possible before. The tracking data records two-dimensional x-y coordinates of 10 players on the court as well as the x-y-z coordinates of the ball at a resolution of 25 frames per second, yielding over 1 billion space-time observations over the course of a full season. This dissertation offers a collection of spatio-temporal models and player evaluation metrics that provide insight into the player interactions and their performance, hence allowing the teams to make better decisions. Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dynamics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In chapter 2, we propose the simulation infrastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node represents the network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow. Our results show that either changes in the team lineup or changes in the opponent team lineup significantly affects the dynamics of a match progression. Evaluation on the match data for the 2013-16 NBA season suggests that the graphical model approach is appropriate for modeling a basketball match. NBA teams value players who can ``stretch'' the floor, i.e. create space on the court by drawing their defender(s) closer to themselves. Clearly, this ability to attract defenders varies across players, and furthermore, this effect may also vary by the court location of the offensive player, and whether or not the player is the ball handler. For instance, a ball-handler near the basket attracts a defender more when compared to a non ball-handler at the 3 point line. This has a significant effect on the defensive assignment. This is particularly important because defensive assignment has become the cornerstone of all tracking data based player evaluation models. In chapter 3, we propose a new model to learn player and court location specific offensive attraction. We show that offensive players indeed have varying ability to attract the defender in different parts of the court. Using this metric, teams can evaluate players to construct a roster or lineup which maximizes spacing. We also improve upon the existing defensive matchup inference algorithm for SportVU data. While the ultimate goal of the offense is to shoot the ball, the strategy lies in creating good shot opportunities. Offensive play event detection has been a topic of research interest. Current research in this area have used a supervised learning approach to detect and classify such events. We took an unsupervised learning approach to detect these events. This has two inherent benefits: first, there is no need for pretagged data to learn identifying these events which is a lobor intensive and error prone task; second, an unsupervised approach allows us to detect events that has not been tagged yet i.e. novel events. We use a HMM based approach to detect these events at any point in the time during a possession by specifying the functional form of the prior distribution on the player movement data. We test our framework on detecting ball screen, post up, and drive. However, it can be easily extended to events like isolation or a new event that has certain distinct defensive matchup or player movement feature compared to a non event. This is the topic for chapter 4. Accurate estimation of the offensive and the defensive abilities of players in the NBA plays a crucial role in player selection and ranking. A typical approach to estimate players' defensive and offensive abilities is to learn the defensive assignment for each shot and then use a random effects model to estimate the offensive and defensive abilities for each player. The scalar estimate from the random effects model can then be used to rank player. In this approach, a shot has a binary outcome, either it is made or it is a miss. This approach is not able to take advantage of the “quality” of the shot trajectory. In chapter 5, we propose a new method for ranking players that infers the quality of a shot trajectory using a deep recurrent neural network, and then uses this quality measure in a random effects model to rank players taking defensive matchup into account. We show that the quality information significantly improves the player ranking. We also show that including the quality of shots increases the separation between the learned random effect coefficients, and thus, allows for a better differentiation of player abilities. Further, we show that we are able to infer changes in the player's ability on a game-by-game basis when using a trajectory based model. A shot based model does not have enough information to detect changes in player's ability on a game-by-game basis. A good defensive player prevents its opponent from making a shot, attempting a good shot, making an easy pass, or scoring events, eventually leading to wasted shot clock time. The salient feature here is that a good defender prevents events. Consequently, event driven metrics, such as box scores, cannot measure defensive abilities. Conventional wisdom in basketball is that ``pesky'' defenders continuously maintain a close distance to the ball handler. A closely guarded offensive player is less likely to take or make a shot, less likely to pass, and more likely to lose the ball. In chapter 6, we introduce Defensive Efficiency Rating (DER), a new statistic that measures the defensive effectiveness of a player. DER is the effective distance a defender maintains with the ball handler during an interaction where we control for the identity and wingspan of the the defender, the shot efficiency of the ball handler, and the zone on the court. DER allows us to quantify the quality of defensive interaction without being limited by the occurrence of discrete and infrequent events like shots and rebounds. We show that the ranking from this statistic naturally picks out defenders known to perform well in particular zones.

Here you have Expository Essay on Basketball, Let’s start with the Introduction.

Introduction

Basketball has genuinely become a global sport in recent years. In the United States, the game is currently very popular. Many people refer to it as an American game because of its fun and competitive nature of it. Also, this is one of the few indoor games that continue to attract billions of followers around the world. Dr James Naismith of Canada was the player in this game. He created the game on a rectangular surface that was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high at first. In addition, the court features a 12-foot long free throw line. Students will learn about the various components that make basketball such a unique sport in this basketball essay.

It’s a team sport that’s become extremely popular. In addition, the game is played with the aid of a ball, which is shot into a horizontally positioned basket. The goal of the game is to shoot the ball and score as many points as possible. This game is played by two teams, each of which has five players. In addition, the game is played on a rectangular floor with baskets on both ends.

History of basketball

Basketball was first played with a soccer ball. James Naismith was also the one who used a fruit basket with no hollow bottom. As a result, this basket was mounted on an elevated track at a height of 10 feet above the ground. If the physical removal of the ball from the basket is considered a disadvantage, the bottom was eliminated and the basket took on the shape of modern-day baskets. Dribbling was also not a component of the game at first. It eventually evolved until 1950, when manufacturing improved the shape of the balls.

Furthermore, the brown ball morphed into an orange ball. The brown ball was initially utilized since it was assumed that it would be more apparent. By 1996, the peach baskets on the backboard had been replaced by metal hoops.

How basketball is played?

A referee tosses the ball between two players in the center of the court at the start of the game. One person from each team tries to obtain a hold of the ball, which is then passed to teammates. A team must shoot the ball through the basket to score a point. When a shot is made from a distance closer to the basket than the 3-point line, it is worth two points. Also, if the ball is shot from behind the three-point line, it scores three points. As a result, the team with the most points is proclaimed the winner.

If the game ends in a tie, both teams may be given additional time. When a player has the ball, he is unable to move in the game. The player must dribble; otherwise, it is called a foul. Similarly, any physical contact that affects the opposing team is considered a physical foul.

Basketball is a sport that is played on a well-kept and marked court. It is a team sport that can be found in a variety of settings.

Iowa's Caitlin Clark became Division I women's basketball's all-time leading scorer on Feb. 15, breaking a seven-year-old record held by Washington's Kelsey Plum. Clark would also go on to break Pete Maravich's record for the most career points in men's and women's basketball on March 3.

In Iowa's highly anticipated matchup against Michigan, Clark broke the all-time DI women's scoring record with a long-range bomb from the center-court logo. The nation's leading scorer erupted for a career-high 49 points, shooting 16-for-31 from the field in addition to 8 free throws.

She snapped Pete Maravich's mark with a pair of free-throws against the second-ranked Buckeyes and would go on to finish with 35 points and nine assists.

Fourteen players have passed the 3,000-point mark in Division I women's basketball. Caitlin Clark and Syracuse's Dyaisha Fair are the only players in the last six years to have passed this milestone.

A year after Plum set the scoring record (2018), Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell made a run at the top spot, finishing her career second all-time with 3,402 points — Fair, the Buffalo and  Syracuse star, recently passed Mitchell with an impressive 2024 NCAA tournament run.

If you look at the top 25 scorers overall, you'll notice the trend of when each player competed. Seven of the top 10 and 14 players overall played at least one season during or after 2010.

Here are the top 25 scorers in DI women's college basketball as of March 30, 2024:

NCAA Tournament 2024: Printable March Madness bracket, predictions, picks, scores, dates for Elite Eight

March madness is underway and you can follow the action by printing out your ncaa tournament bracket.

The final two spots in the Final Four will be secured Sunday as the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament concludes with a pair of matchups between familiar foes. Up first will be No. 1 seed Purdue taking on No. 2 seed Tennessee in the Midwest Region final before No. 4 seed Duke plays No. 11 seed NC State in the South Region final.

Purdue and Tennessee first clashed on Nov. 21 in the Maui Invitational as the Boilermakers squeaked out a 71-67 win in a game marred by 51 fouls. Both teams have evolved since then as Tennessee starting point guard Zakai Zeigler has completed his recovery from a torn ACL while Northern Colorado transfer Dalton Knecht has blossomed into an All-American. For Purdue, the supporting cast around star center Zach Edey has found its stride, helping the Boilermakers emerge as the nation's top 3-point shooting team.

In the day's second game, the Blue Devils and Wolfpack will decide their season series after splitting their first two meetings. Duke won the first meeting 79-64 on March 4, spoiling NC State's Senior Day. The Wolfpack got their revenge on March 14 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals with a 74-69 victory that helped propel NC State into the NCAA Tournament.
