Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

Newspapers have been an integral part of human civilization for centuries, serving as a crucial source of information, entertainment, and public discourse. The origins of newspapers can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where scribes would handwrite news on papyrus scrolls or wooden tablets. However, the modern newspaper as we know it today emerged in the 15th century with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

The first printed newspaper is believed to be the Relation, published in Strasbourg, Germany, in 1609. This was followed by the Avisa Relation oder Zeitung, published in Germany in 1618, which is considered the first regularly printed newspaper. From there, newspapers spread rapidly across Europe and eventually to the Americas, evolving into a powerful medium for disseminating news, opinions, and advertisements.

The evolution of newspapers has been a remarkable journey, reflecting the changing societal landscape and technological advancements. Initially, newspapers were handwritten or printed on simple presses, with limited circulation and content. As printing technology improved and literacy rates increased, newspapers became more widely available and influential.

The 19th century witnessed a significant transformation in the newspaper industry with the introduction of new printing techniques, such as the rotary press and linotype machines, which allowed for faster and more efficient production. This period also saw the rise of investigative journalism, with newspapers playing a crucial role in exposing societal injustices and holding authorities accountable.

The 20th century brought about further innovations, including the use of photographs, color printing, and the integration of radio and television news broadcasts. The advent of the internet and digital technologies in the late 20th century revolutionized the newspaper industry once again, leading to the emergence of online editions, multimedia content, and new business models.

There is no doubt that the press has a great role in educating people, and in the essay on the importance of newspapers we will explain the importance of newspapers, their advantages, what is the impact of newspapers on creating a democratic society, the importance of newspapers for guidance and counseling in times of crises and in environmental disasters and the spread of diseases and epidemics, and what are the reasons for the decrease in newspaper purchases, and how to overcome this by issuing electronic newspapers.

The newspaper definition

A newspaper is a group of paper pages that deal with news of all kinds, political, economic, social, military, artistic, sports and others.

The newspapers also contain various advertisements, and these advertisements are one of the sources of the newspaper’s income, and therefore the newspapers are keen to attract the largest number of them.

The newspaper is issued through a specific entity, and thus this entity is responsible for everything that is published in the newspaper. Therefore, the newspaper issuing authority must obtain all official media approvals, in order to be able to publish and transmit international and local news.

Most newspapers are published on a daily basis, while others are published on a weekly or monthly basis. A large number of people work to publish the newspaper, such as journalists and analysts, writers and photographers, editors and others.

Each newspaper has an editor-in-chief, who is the person responsible for all the procedures that take place in the newspaper, and the news that is published in it.

The importance of newspapers

There is no doubt that journalism has a major role in transmitting and disseminating news, directing society and spreading culture. Newspapers and magazines were the most used tool before the discovery of the mobile phone and the Internet. We can summarize the importance of newspapers as follows:

  • Newspapers help promote freedom of expression and opinion, as they provide people with information and reports on local and global affairs.
  • Newspapers and magazines are among the media that promote democracy, as they help in forming a critical opinion among readers, educating people, transferring the experiences of other countries, and other things that help the formation of a democratic society.
  • Governmental newspapers are a link between the government and citizens, as they present problems and proposals that concern people, as well as government achievements and future plans.
  • Newspapers work to help people get their rights, through legal and political awareness, and so on.
  • One of the most important roles that newspapers play is serving citizens, by presenting societal problems and providing suggestions and solutions to these problems, which helps in speeding up their solution.
  • Increasing community awareness is the most important goal of newspapers, as people can learn about local and foreign events and issues, and thus make important decisions to improve their lives.
  • Newspapers are used to educate citizens in times of crises, epidemics, and so on.
  • Newspapers are used for commercial advertisements of all kinds.
  • Newspapers are used as an educational tool, where news is circulated and analyzed, and facts and theories related to this news are explained with the aim of helping the reader to better understand the subject. Some newspapers also deal with explaining school curricula to students, exam forms, exam dates, and so on.

Newspapers features

There are several advantages of newspapers that we cannot overlook, despite the discovery of the Internet, the occurrence of a revolution in the field of communications, and the transmission of news, but there are some people who prefer reading newspapers because they are characterized by the following:

  • Newspapers are an official source of news, unlike various social media, which may promote lies and incorrect information. This feature is the most important thing that distinguishes paper newspapers from other means.
  • Paper newspapers preserve the news and data contained in them for the longest period of time, as a person can keep the news that interests him for any period of time he wants.
  • A person can read newspapers at any place or time without the need for the Internet.
  • Newspapers contain most of the topics that the reader is interested in, political, economic, social and other topics.
  • Paper newspapers include an analysis of news by specialists, and in many cases the reader is linked to the opinion and ideas of the writer, and therefore it is preferable to read paper newspapers to follow his favorite reader.

Types of journal articles

Undoubtedly, newspapers contain all journalistic topics of interest to the reader, in addition to advertisements and others. Among the most important articles are the following:

Journalistic investigations: They are written journalistic texts that are concerned with investigating a specific topic, or studying a specific thing and showing the positive and negative aspects of it.

Press reports: They are press texts that summarize an event, such as a report describing the events of a football match, the opening of a huge project, the visit of a local or international official, and so on.

Press interviews: These are journalistic texts written after an interview with a person, to convey the dialogue that took place with that person and highlight his most important responses and opinions.

In all articles, pictures are used that give the article credibility, excitement and suspense to the reader.

Why are newspaper sales declining?

There is no doubt that man likes to do things easily and quickly, and that is why people came to know the news from the Internet, and newspaper sales decreased significantly. And no longer buy newspapers except for the elderly whose feelings are linked to the paper newspaper, and people who follow a certain writer and prefer to read his article constantly.

Newspapers are still the reliable news medium for many people. It is also the method that people depend on in areas where there is no internet.

Electronic newspaper

Due to the decrease in the number of people who buy paper newspapers, newspapers have resorted to issuing electronic newspapers that bear the same name as the paper newspaper, and contain the same articles.

Electronic newspapers were able to spread greatly compared to paper newspapers, because of their many advantages:

Advantages of electronic newspapers

  • Obtaining information or news in an easy way, without browsing the entire newspaper.
  • Electronic newspapers are free.
  • Ease of use via mobile phone or computer and the Internet.
  • Watch events instead of reading written text.
  • Publishing news in a faster way than paper newspapers.
  • Electronic newspapers are more attractive to readers from younger age groups (adolescents – young adults).
  • Electronic newspapers enjoy credibility, because they follow responsible parties and can be held accountable.

At the end of the essay on importance of newspapers, I talked about the definition of newspaper and the importance of newspapers in our lives, why paper newspaper sales decreased, and how paper newspapers were replaced by electronic newspapers. And what are the advantages of each of them, and we have noticed the important role that newspapers play, whether in times of peace or war.

The role of newspapers also stands out in spreading awareness and education in times of crises, disasters, and the spread of diseases and epidemics. Newspapers will remain one of the reliable news outlets, as readers resort to reading newspapers to ensure the authenticity of the news published by social media, because newspapers are issued by an official responsible authority.

The Beginner's Guide to Writing an Essay | Steps & Examples

An academic essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an idea or argument using evidence, analysis, and interpretation.

There are many types of essays you might write as a student. The content and length of an essay depends on your level, subject of study, and course requirements. However, most essays at university level are argumentative — they aim to persuade the reader of a particular position or perspective on a topic.

The essay writing process consists of three main stages:

  • Preparation: Decide on your topic, do your research, and create an essay outline.
  • Writing : Set out your argument in the introduction, develop it with evidence in the main body, and wrap it up with a conclusion.
  • Revision:  Check your essay on the content, organization, grammar, spelling, and formatting of your essay.

The writing process of preparation, writing, and revisions applies to every essay or paper, but the time and effort spent on each stage depends on the type of essay .

For example, if you’ve been assigned a five-paragraph expository essay for a high school class, you’ll probably spend the most time on the writing stage; for a college-level argumentative essay , on the other hand, you’ll need to spend more time researching your topic and developing an original argument before you start writing.

Before you start writing, you should make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. There are a few key steps you can follow to make sure you’re prepared:

  • Understand your assignment: What is the goal of this essay? What is the length and deadline of the assignment? Is there anything you need to clarify with your teacher or professor?
  • Define a topic: If you’re allowed to choose your own topic , try to pick something that you already know a bit about and that will hold your interest.
  • Do your research: Read  primary and secondary sources and take notes to help you work out your position and angle on the topic. You’ll use these as evidence for your points.
  • Come up with a thesis:  The thesis is the central point or argument that you want to make. A clear thesis is essential for a focused essay—you should keep referring back to it as you write.
  • Create an outline: Map out the rough structure of your essay in an outline . This makes it easier to start writing and keeps you on track as you go.

Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want to discuss, in what order, and what evidence you’ll use, you’re ready to start writing.

The introduction sets the tone for your essay. It should grab the reader’s interest and inform them of what to expect. The introduction generally comprises 10–20% of the text.

1. Hook your reader

The first sentence of the introduction should pique your reader’s interest and curiosity. This sentence is sometimes called the hook. It might be an intriguing question, a surprising fact, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic.

Let’s say we’re writing an essay about the development of Braille (the raised-dot reading and writing system used by visually impaired people). Our hook can make a strong statement about the topic:

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

2. Provide background on your topic

Next, it’s important to give context that will help your reader understand your argument. This might involve providing background information, giving an overview of important academic work or debates on the topic, and explaining difficult terms. Don’t provide too much detail in the introduction—you can elaborate in the body of your essay.

3. Present the thesis statement

Next, you should formulate your thesis statement— the central argument you’re going to make. The thesis statement provides focus and signals your position on the topic. It is usually one or two sentences long. The thesis statement for our essay on Braille could look like this:

As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness.

4. Map the structure

In longer essays, you can end the introduction by briefly describing what will be covered in each part of the essay. This guides the reader through your structure and gives a preview of how your argument will develop.

The invention of Braille marked a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by blind and visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Write your essay introduction

The body of your essay is where you make arguments supporting your thesis, provide evidence, and develop your ideas. Its purpose is to present, interpret, and analyze the information and sources you have gathered to support your argument.

Length of the body text

The length of the body depends on the type of essay. On average, the body comprises 60–80% of your essay. For a high school essay, this could be just three paragraphs, but for a graduate school essay of 6,000 words, the body could take up 8–10 pages.

Paragraph structure

To give your essay a clear structure , it is important to organize it into paragraphs . Each paragraph should be centered around one main point or idea.

That idea is introduced in a  topic sentence . The topic sentence should generally lead on from the previous paragraph and introduce the point to be made in this paragraph. Transition words can be used to create clear connections between sentences.

After the topic sentence, present evidence such as data, examples, or quotes from relevant sources. Be sure to interpret and explain the evidence, and show how it helps develop your overall argument.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

See the full essay example

The conclusion is the final paragraph of an essay. It should generally take up no more than 10–15% of the text . A strong essay conclusion :

  • Returns to your thesis
  • Ties together your main points
  • Shows why your argument matters

A great conclusion should finish with a memorable or impactful sentence that leaves the reader with a strong final impression.

What not to include in a conclusion

To make your essay’s conclusion as strong as possible, there are a few things you should avoid. The most common mistakes are:

  • Including new arguments or evidence
  • Undermining your arguments (e.g. “This is just one approach of many”)
  • Using concluding phrases like “To sum up…” or “In conclusion…”

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

An essay is a focused piece of writing that explains, argues, describes, or narrates.

In high school, you may have to write many different types of essays to develop your writing skills.

Academic essays at college level are usually argumentative : you develop a clear thesis about your topic and make a case for your position using evidence, analysis and interpretation.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

Essay on Newspaper and Its Uses in Our Life – Essay 4 (500 words)

Newspaper is a periodic publication which contains written information about current events. It covers a wide variety of fields such as politics, business, sports and arts, and also includes content such as opinion columns, weather forecasts, crosswords, editorial cartoons and birth notices.

Though the technology has advanced to a greater level and people can see news on televisions and their mobile phones, people still prefer to buy newspapers and read them. The feeling of reading news through a newspaper will always have more importance and impact on people’s mind compared to that gathered by some gadget. One of the reasons for this is that reading through electronic devices can strain eyes and can even cause serious health issues.

Newspapers help in building people’s thoughts, ideas and feelings towards different things. Thus, if the articles in newspapers are correct and neutral then this can lead to formation of strong, unidirectional mental state of the whole civilization leading to the progress of the country. If the news is not true and neutral then it can also lead to the destruction of the whole union. Hence, it is necessary to have newspaper publications that are fearless, intelligent, not belonging to any political party and those that think about nation and their duties towards the nation before their own personal interests. This is how newspapers hold great importance in our ever day lives.

Functions of Newspaper and Its Importance in Our Lives

The uses or importance of newspaper in everyday lives can be summarized and easily understood by knowing its functions. So the four major functions of newspapers are as followed:

  • To Inform : Newspapers provide facts and information to make citizens aware about the things happening around them and stay up to date. This helps in making them build a neutral and right perspective towards the latest scenarios.
  • To Interpret the News : Newspapers basically provide a better idea about a situation or event, in detail. This may also vary from writer to writer as everyone has their own perspective towards a situation. So, it is essential for a citizen to take it in a neutral way and build his opinion about it.
  • To Provide Services to Different Professionals : Newspapers provide information that helps businessmen as well working professionals. New business ideas can be derived looking at how and where the market is heading. Newspaper is also a great place to advertise about ones products and services. It is a great platform for both buyers and sellers. For example, if someone needs to buy vehicle or home, then there are various advertisements which can help them assist in comparing and getting their deals. Newspapers also have a section for the job seekers where they can check for suitable job vacancies and contact their prospective employers.
  • To entertain : There are some specific sections in the newspaper which are designed to amuse or give enjoyment to readers. This section may contain some puzzles, cartoon sketches, jokes, crosswords, and many such activities. This section helps readers remain engrossed in the news for a longer time. It is a good way of recreation and brings joy. Puzzles and cross words also challenge ones mind and hones problem solving skills.

There are many other benefits that one gets from reading newspapers, such as improvement in vocabulary and reading efficiency. All of these benefits help readers build their own polished personality which can help them further in their lives.

A Critic’s Plea for Maximalism: ‘Crack Us Open Like Eggs’

In her first essay collection, Becca Rothfeld demonstrates that sometimes, more really is more.

ALL THINGS ARE TOO SMALL: Essays in Praise of Excess , by Becca Rothfeld

The essays I love favor abundance over economy, performance over persuasion. Zadie Smith’s exemplary “Speaking in Tongues” juggles Barack Obama, Shakespeare, Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” Pauline Kael on Cary Grant, Thomas Macaulay on the Marquess of Halifax and her own “silly posh” speaking voice. Its modest argument, that “flexibility of voice leads to a flexibility in all things,” disappears into the spectacle of a nimble mind reveling in its omnivorous erudition.

The critic Becca Rothfeld’s first collection, “All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess,” is splendidly immodest in its neo-Romantic agenda — to tear down minimalism and puritanism in its many current varieties — but, like Smith, she makes her strongest case in her essays’ very form, a carnival of high-low allusion and analysis. Macaulay, Cary Grant, Obama and a posh accent? Rothfeld will see you and raise you: How about Simone Weil, Aristotle, “Troll 2,” Lionel Trilling, Hadewijch of Brabant (from whom she takes her title), serial killer procedurals, Proust and the Talmud? Not that she neglects Cary Grant; in an essay on love and equality, she filters a smart reading of “His Girl Friday” through the philosopher Stanley Cavell.

Cynthia Ozick (who ought to know) has favorably — and justly — compared Rothfeld to “the legendary New York intellectuals,” though Rothfeld lives in D.C., where she’s the nonfiction book critic for The Washington Post. She’s also an editor at The Point, a contributing editor at The Boston Review, and has published in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The Nation, The Atlantic, The Baffler and The British Journal of Aesthetics. Of course she also has a Substack, and she declares on her website — which links to many splendid pieces not collected in this book — that she’s “perhaps delusionally convinced” she’ll eventually finish her Harvard Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy.

The costive and the envious might wonder if she’s spreading herself too thin, but Rothfeld’s rigor and eloquence suggest that in her case, as the title of one essay has it, “More Is More.” That piece begins in dispraise of “professional declutterers” such as Marie Kondo, whose aesthetic amounts to “solipsism spatialized,” and from whose dream houses “evidence of habitation — and, in particular, evidence of the body, with its many leaky indecencies — has been eliminated.”

But it soon morphs into dispraise of minimalist prose and the “impoverished non-novels” of fashionable writers including Jenny Offill, Ottessa Moshfegh and Kate Zambreno, whose “anti-narratives are soothingly tractable, made up of sentences so short that they are often left to complete themselves.”

Rothfeld, by contrast, leaves no phrase unturned. Her maximalist prose abounds in alliteration — “I recommend bingeing to bursting,” she writes, exhorting us to “savor the slivers of salvation hidden in all that hideous hunger” — as well as such old-school locutions as “pray tell” and “cannot but be offensive.” If these mannerisms sit uneasily next to her f-worded celebrations of sexuality, the dissonance is deliberate, and the unease is a matter of principle.

In “Wherever You Go, You Could Leave,” a takedown of “mindfulness,” Rothfeld reports that when she “decided to live” after a suicide attempt in her first year of college, she rejected the soothing blankness of meditation and concluded that “perturbation is a small price to pay for the privilege of a point of view.”

Despite her disdain for “professional opinion-havers” — among them the columnist Christine Emba, lately also of The Washington Post — she doesn’t mind laying down the law. In the book’s longest essay, “Only Mercy: Sex After Consent,” Rothfeld taxes Emba, author of the best-selling “Rethinking Sex,” with an “appalling incomprehension of what good sex is like.”

So, pray tell. “We should choke, crawl, spank, spew, and above all, surrender furiously, until the sheer smack of sex becomes its own profuse excuse for being.” Some sexual encounters, she continues, “crack us open like eggs” and “we should not be willing to live without them.”

We-shoulding is an occupational hazard of opinion-having, but we need take these pronouncements no more — and no less — to heart than Rothfeld’s paradoxical admiration for both the “beatifically stylized” films of Éric Rohmer and the “magnificently demented” oeuvre of David Cronenberg. Do we agree or disagree with her that Sally Rooney’s novels are overpraised, and that Norman Rush’s “Mating” is really “one of the most perfect novels of the past half century”?

More to the point, do we agree that “the aesthetic resides in excess and aimlessness,” and that extravagance is “our human due”? I’d say no to the former and yes to the latter, but who cares? What counts in these essays is the exhilarating ride, not the sometimes-dodgy destination. William Blake wrote that the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom; Rothfeld might say that they’re one and the same. No argument there.

Conservatives Are Getting Comfortable Talking Openly About a National Abortion Ban

After this week’s oral argument, few court watchers believe the Supreme Court is now ready to limit the Food and Drug Administration’s authority to approve mifepristone , a drug used in more than half of all abortions , as opponents of abortion sought. At oral argument in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine , it did not appear that the plaintiff doctors persuaded the court that the law inflicted injuries that would give them standing to sue. The reason for the justices’ skepticism is not hard to find. The doctors built their case on a mountain of remote possibilities. Patients might suffer complications from mifepristone—a drug with an impressively low complication rate—and might seek treatment at emergency rooms, where the plaintiffs may happen to practice, when the plaintiffs might not be able to find another physician willing to intervene. And all of that might mean that the plaintiffs would have to act in violation of their conscience. But then again, it might not. That’s why this case seems dead on arrival: The justices seemed unwilling to engage in the sort of rank speculation the plaintiffs have in mind. If this chain of hypotheticals is enough, anyone can bring a constitutional challenge to any drug approval or any law.

But the case was also a vehicle for advancing ever more expansive conscience-based arguments that have become common currency among Christian conservatives—claims of the kind we have seen in well-known cases like the 2014 Hobby Lobby decision recognizing conscience objections to the contraceptive mandate of the Affordable Care Act or even last year’s ruling in 303 Creative v. Elenis that allowed a conservative Christian graphic designer to refuse to make custom websites for same-sex weddings.

Today, those with conscience-based objections seek more than to pray or dress in conformity with religious belief. They object to laws providing Americans access to health care or freedom from discrimination. Compliance with these laws, they claim, would make the objector complicit in the assertedly sinful conduct of others.

Objectors bringing this new generation of complicity-based conscience claims invite courts to deny other Americans the protections of the law. In the FDA case, the plaintiffs do not even seek an exemption from the law; through an expansive standing claim, the doctors claim the only way the court could protect their conscience is to strike down FDA approvals providing all Americans access to medication abortion. Simply having mifepristone on the market, they argue, risks making them complicit in abortion.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson zeroed in on the problems with this argument. She observed that Erin Hawley, the attorney for the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, had identified a “broad” and “narrow” idea of conscience. The “narrow” reading was straightforward: “participating in a procedure.” This reading had problems of its own: In fact, no doctor was obliged to prescribe mifepristone, and in any event, federal law provides doctors conscience protections.

Yet Hawley didn’t think complicity ended there. Jackson seemed confused. Did Hawley mean that a handful of other doctors who participated in post-abortion procedures, such as the removal of tissue, were also complicit? Or was Hawley asking the court to recognize the complicity claims of someone who worked in an emergency room where abortions took place, or handed an abortion provider a water bottle?

Jackson spotlighted a defining feature of “conscience-war” claims that one of us (Reva Siegel), writing with Douglas NeJaime, has identified : Conservatives assert ever-expanding complicity-based conscience claims, urging the government to accommodate their claims without making any provision for other Americans who would lose the protection of law. Appealing to the value of conscience obscures the material and dignitary harm that accommodating the objection inflicts on others.

Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar stressed this point: While the plaintiffs could not say their conscience had been or would be harmed, their claim to conscience obscured harm done to a variety of other parties. That includes the FDA, which had its own scientific judgments displaced, and the pharmaceutical industry, which relies on the FDA approval process to ensure some sort of uniform industry standards. First and foremost, it includes, as Prelogar noted, “women who need access to medication abortion .”

Conscience claims have been alluring to conservatives because, like colorblindness, they allow conservatives to speak as a “minority,” and to assert traditional family values as individual freedom claims. But there is a telling shift. When groups like Alliance Defending Freedom asserted complicity-based conscience claims at the time of Hobby Lobby , they worried about losing in a Supreme Court that was far less conservative—and about alienating a Republican Party that still prioritized electability rather than ideological purity.

By contrast, in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, ADF talked not only about protecting women or safeguarding conscience; it made claims around the Comstock Act, a symbol of Victorian sexual morality focused not on protecting fetal life but on discouraging illicit sex , that ADF seeks to reinvent as a de facto national abortion ban. ADF argued that FDA could not have had the authority to approve telehealth abortions in 2021 because the Comstock Act bars the mailing of abortion pills—and indeed, any abortion-related item. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito both seemed interested in transforming the 1873 Comstock Act into an abortion ban that American voters would never choose to enact. Alito seemed shy about mentioning Comstock by name, instead referring to the hard-to-recognize number in the U.S. Code. Thomas was not so reserved, all but telling attorneys for Danco, the maker of the name-brand mifepristone, that the Comstock Act barred the mailing of the drug.

The very fact that ADF wants to talk about the Comstock Act is remarkable. It seems unwise to hitch the anti-abortion movement’s star to a 19 th -century anti-vice movement known for “Comstockery”: censoring political speech, undermining democratic norms, and condemning any form of sex not intended for procreation .

Voters have already rejected state abortion bans. Just imagine what most Americans would make of it if an already unpopular Supreme Court interpreted a law from 1873 as a sweeping, punitive zombie abortion ban. But worrying about the public’s reaction assumes the movement is seeking to persuade voters rather than simply looking for ways to use power to enforce traditional family values and punish those who become pregnant or might provide them medical care. Anti-abortion groups are planning to revive enforcement of the Comstock Act if Donald Trump wins the presidency , claiming they would not need Congress to act .

The argument in the mifepristone case was a potent reminder of why conservatives have gravitated to conscience claims—and demonstrated the hidden harms that these claims can inflict on other Americans. But the conversation at the Supreme Court this week also suggested that conservatives are preparing to express the values underlying complicity-based conscience claims more openly. As it gains power, members of the anti-abortion movement seem increasingly ready to take off the mask.

Herald, Foster's, News-Letter, Union and York Weekly mail delivery starts April 1

Starting April 1, the U.S. Postal Service will begin delivering the Portsmouth Herald, Foster's Daily Democrat, Hampton Union, Exeter News-Letter and York Weekly newspapers.

"The move from driver delivery to postal service delivery is another step in Seacoast Media Group's evolution from a print-first to a digital-first news and marketing source," said Executive Editor Howard Altschiller. "Our unwavering commitment to the Seacoast communities and readers we serve remains rock solid. Readers looking for the latest Seacoast news, sports and advertising can count on Seacoastonline , Fosters.com and our printed newspapers to deliver."

Like many other newspaper publishers, Gannett Co. Inc., which operates more than 200 daily newspapers, including Seacoast Media Group's papers in New Hampshire and Maine, has already successfully introduced the switch from driver delivery to mail in dozens of markets across the country, and is expanding the initiative.

The markets which have switched to mail delivery report high customer satisfaction rates. While the paper will arrive later in the day with the mail, it will arrive consistently in the same place at the same time. In recent years it has been a challenge to adequately staff the delivery force needed to hand deliver papers across the Seacoast region of New Hampshire and Maine.

Papers will be delivered to local post offices early enough each morning to allow same-day delivery. Because there is no mail delivery on Sunday, Seacoast Sunday will arrive in mailboxes on Saturday. The digital replica of the Sunday paper, the eNewspaper , will post to Seacoastonline and Fosters.com on Sunday morning.

Delivery of non-Seacoast newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, previously handled by Seacoast Media Group drivers, has been taken over by a new company. Questions regarding delivery of non-Seacoast papers should be directed to those other newspapers.

The change to postal delivery will not impact subscription rates.

“For many years now, the printed newspaper has served as a culmination of the stories that will become our collective history, while our websites and mobile apps deliver the news of the day,” said Michael A. Anastasi, vice president of local news for Gannett. “We know that by the time our informed readers pick up the paper, they know what happened yesterday — the print newspaper should provide additional context, to help readers better understand their community and the world around them.”

Readers can also visit Seacoastonline.com and Fosters.com to access the eNewspaper at seacoastonline.com/enewspaper and fosters.com/enewspaper .

Subscribers with questions or concerns can visit help.seacoastonline.com/contact-us and help.fosters.com/contact-us.

Elizabeth Warren election: Quincy City Council president files papers for US Senate run

QUINCY − City Council President Ian Cain filed paperwork the Federal Election Commission on Monday, April 1, clearing the way for a possible U.S. Senate run. The filing was a necessary step to gain ballot access in November, but according to a representative, Cain will not formally announce his decision until later this month.

"Getting on the ballot is an undertaking in Massachusetts, so we want to get things prepped and not lose any time," said campaign organizer Rebecca Schieber.

If he decides to run, the 41-year-old Republican would challenge two-term Democratic Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Cain was first elected Ward 3 City Councilor in 2016. This year, he became the city's first Black and gay Council President. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Boston College and an MBA from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in 2013.

In his professional life, Cain is a co-founder of QUBIC Labs , a Quincy nonprofit that supports startups in the fields of finance and civic technologies. He is also President of the Highpoint Group.

In addition to his time on city council, Cain's political experience includes two internships for Massachusetts Democrat Stephen Lynch, first in the State House and then in the House of Representatives.

Colman Domingo Pays Tribute to Louis Gossett Jr. : ‘There Would Be No Me, if There Was No Him’

Gossett Jr., the trailblazing Oscar and Emmy winning actor, died Friday at age 87

By Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo

Louis Gossett Jr.

Colman Domingo is an Emmy winner, as well as Academy Award and Tony-nominated actor, playwright and director. Domingo and Gossett Jr. co-starred in 2023’s “ The Color Purple ,” one of the late Oscar winner’s final films.

There is a moment that our wunderkind director Blitz Bazawule set up for the great Louis Gossett Jr. and me that is one of my most memorable cinematic moments of my entire career. It is a moment created just for our offering of Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple.”

So much being said, so much left unsaid. Just the depth of Lou and I staring straight into each other’s souls and bringing generations of Black men with us in that room. Our families. The history of slavery and its effects on the Black family. The women have left the Easter dinner table — and left no crumbs — as liberation took hold in that hot Georgia home. In our eyes I felt horror, fear, trauma, pain, hurt, rage and regret.

The first day that I met Mr. Gossett, I said “Thank you.” Those were the words I wanted to say. Because I knew that there would be no me, if there was no him. And other giants like him. I always looked to him and James Earl Jones and Glynn Turman and Roscoe Lee Browne and Paul Winfield and Morgan Freeman and Sidney Poitier. Men who came from the theater, like me, who gave such dignity to heroes and villains. Every character had grace in some way shape or form.

Lou and I had many moments off screen just chatting about life and art, and he constantly would talk about the responsibility of youth. To get involved and make this world better. He was a teacher and a humanitarian. He wore Kente cloth and sat with a walking stick. He would ask me after a take, with all the humility in the world, “Was that okay?” I looked at him and said, “Anything you give us is a gift.” And I meant that. He brought years of experience, intelligence, with good humor, light and love to our set. I felt a kinship with him. I called him “Daddy” the entire time, since he was Ole Mista and I was his son.

When he wrapped, I kissed his hands twice. I asked Fantasia to sing a song of thank you. He told us, “Knock ‘em dead, now.” He had tears in his eyes. I couldn’t thank him enough for all that he had given. He ran his race for us. It is up to us to “Knock ‘em dead, now.”
