Practice Makes Perfect Essay

Need to prepare a practice makes perfect essay, paragraph, or speech? Writing such a text might be challenging, whether it is a 3-words piece or a longer story. Below, you’ll find everything you might need to get inspired.

Introduction

  • Stories & Examples

Practice is one of the keys to success. Why am I saying this? Practice, talent and being lucky are equally important. They are interconnected in that one cannot exist without the other. No matter how lucky one is, if no practice is done one is bound to fail. We do practice daily on how to live through our experiences which has a possibility of increasing our harvests. No matter how talented one is, one is likely to forget the basic thing if no practice is done.

Why Does Practice Make a Man Perfect?

Ones’ progress will mostly depend on the frequency engaged in, and the type of outcome needed for improvement which mostly gauges one’s determination. The much practice required depends upon the nature of the activity, and upon the individual due to difference in peoples’ nature and desire to learn and achieve more.

Practice is an important tool to being successful and it helps one’s goal come true. I hoped I could pass the practical test of manicure license. Manicure test had two parts, the practical and the written one, so I had to practice more than 10 times a day.

Practice Makes Perfect: Stories & Examples

Practice influences us all the time.

The newborn baby has to practice in order to walk and speak because no baby is born with the capability of either talking or walking. The baby learns from human beings around them. The baby starts learning step by step. Parents always hold the baby’s hands as they help the baby make small steps.

A baby does have to practice daily until he or she knows how to walk, the baby do fall always however, parents believe that continued practice can help it achieve its goal of walking hence day by day the baby can walk. Parents always worry about its physical problem like falling down and weak legs before it knows how to walk. Finally, they do feel happy and successful after the baby knows how to walk.

Practice makes us to be successful. If you don’t practice, you will fail. It did happen to my friend Yuri. We took the same manicure class at Rosemead Beauty School to get the manicure license at the end of the summer. However, before we got the license we had to complete 400 hours, and then apply for the state board test.

We had to stay for the whole day at the beauty school; morning reading classes, afternoon practical. We practiced manicure in case we had customers in the afternoon but if we didn’t, we would practice on our parents or on our self. Yuri is a Japanese girl, and she is good at nail art design. She passed all the written quizzes; she even took the higher version quiz than us. While we were practicing manicure with the customers, she always did the nail art design.

She loved to make the designs on the nail tip. She had done so many designs although she never practiced the practical test of state board requirement like: tip, tip overlays, wraps, acrylic nail. She was unwilling to practice with customers even though the teacher always called her to practice. She thought it was not hard for her to pass the practical exam. She never came back for practical after she was done with the 400 hours attendance forgetting that one always performs at the level you practice, she was ever at home.

Finally, as we never thought of it, she did pass the written part, but didn’t pass the practical part. My teacher told me that she never practiced that’s why she didn’t pass. She didn’t practice enough before she took the state board test. Yuri was so sad, she regretted, and blamed herself for not practicing. Right now she has to wait for the practical exam again.

And she has to pay the application fee again for the next practical exam. But the saddest thing is that she even doesn’t know when the next practical exam is. She has to wait for unknown period of time. Without the manicure license she can’t do anything like having customer, if she does, she will be jailed. She even can’t find a job. She has learned that practice is very important for success. Right now she practices daily until the schedule come out.

After Yuri’s case, I learned that practice is very important to pass the practical exam. So I have practiced harder than before. I practice more than 10 times daily for my November 15, 2010 state board test. I usually try the acrylic nail first which I am not good at. It’s hard to work on the acrylic nail.

The acrylic nail entails initially placing the nail receptacle on the nail position, second is the combination (of the polymer and the monomer) by use of a brush, then putting the drip at the (nail) line and in the midpoint of the (natural) nail. The bead is then flattened through continuous pressing.

To uniformly distribute the product’s level remains the most challenging thing in this field. After finishing, I always file the nail to shape the free edge and sidewalls to smoothen the surface. It usually takes 30 minutes for me to finish one finger. The state board test only allows 15minute doing the acrylic nail. I will fail the practical exam if I use this speed. I don’t want to fail like Yuri, so I do practice often, right now I only use 10 minutes to finish one finger. I do believe that if I practice more I will pass the practical exam of the state board test.

I don’t want to untimely wait for the retest, and repay the application fee once more. I want to do this as soon as I can so that I can get my manicure license, and look for a job which is am interested to have. I don’t want to work at the restaurant again. With the license I can have my own customer and earn my money from giving the manicure services.

In conclusion, I am not good at working on the acrylic nail, ever warps, and tip and to sum it up am not an expert in manicure. However, I do believe if I practiced more, I can be a genius of the manicure services.

I also believe that to pass my practical exams and obtain a manicure license, I need to practice more because practice makes perfect and this is the only way to make me successful and make my manicure dream come true. I therefore encourage each and everyone who wants to be perfect in each and everything they desire to achieve must often practice.

Short Essays on Practice Makes a Man Perfect in 100 Words

‘Practice makes a man perfect is a famous English proverb. It tells us that the more a person practices a craft, the better he will get at it. In life, there are some things that are easy for us to do and then there are other things that are relatively difficult. But no matter how difficult something is, with determination and hard work, it is not impossible to succeed.

Be it studying, sports, art, music or more mundane things like cooking and baking, one can learn and improve their skills through consistent practice and hard work. Practising more also boosts our confidence and reduces the chance of us making mistakes.

Short Essays on Practice Makes a Man Perfect in 200 Words

‘Practice makes a man perfect.’ is an old English proverb that tells us that with more practice, a person can achieve perfection. ‘Practice’ means doing a specific work or using one’s skills repeatedly and continuously. ‘Perfect’ is a word that is used to describe something that is ideal and complete. If we do something repeatedly, it becomes easier for us and the chance of making mistakes decreases.

Be it studying, sports, art, music or more mundane things like cooking and baking, one can learn and improve their skills through consistent practice and hard work. The more we practice, the better we get at it and the more confident we become. Thus, the practice also boosts one’s confidence. Some people are born talented in a specific field but a person who isn’t as gifted in it can also excel if he or she works hard and practices a lot.

If you want to succeed and do well in a specific field, having knowledge, determination, dedication, a positive attitude and self-confidence are important. However, regular practice can actually improve your skills and help you attain perfection. Practising regularly is a habit that should be developed from childhood. Making children understand the value of hard work and practice is important. It helps them throughout their life.

Short Essays on Practice Makes a Man Perfect in 400 Words

‘Practice makes a man Perfect’ is a famous English proverb. ‘Practice’ means doing a specific work or using one’s skills repeatedly and continuously. ‘Perfect’ is a word that is used to describe something that is ideal and complete. If we do something repeatedly, it becomes easier for us and the chance of making mistakes decreases as well. In life, there are some things that are easy for us to do and then there are other things that are relatively difficult. But no matter how difficult a certain thing is, with determination and hard work, it is not impossible to succeed.

Be it studying, sports, art, music or more mundane things like cooking, baking and sewing, one can learn and improve their skills through consistent practice and hard work. For example, when a person starts learning how to cycle, he stops, stumbles and falls down multiple times. But as he keeps practising, he begins to ride the bicycle well and can go long distances without falling. With even more practice, he learns how to cycle perfectly.

Singers need to practice their singing daily to be able to perform well or else their voice may crack. Sports players like cricketers, footballers, marathon runners, too, need to practice daily. The more we practice, the better we get at it and the more confident we become. Thus, practice also boosts one’s confidence.

Some people are born talented in a specific field but a person who isn’t as gifted in it can also excel if he or she works hard and practices a lot. So, if you want to paint beautiful sceneries but you are not very good at it, learning different art styles and practising them daily can help you paint like a professional.

Practising regularly requires determination and dedication. One who is not dedicated to learning or doing well in his or her field can not keep up with daily practice and is bound to give up sooner or later. Only with strong willpower and passion for perfection, one can go on practising until they perfect their skills.

If you want to succeed and do well in a specific field, knowledge, determination, dedication, positive attitude, self-confidence and practice are all very important. However, regular practice is actually the key to improving your skills and it helps you attain perfection. Practising regularly is a habit that should be developed from childhood. Making children understand the value of hard work and practice is important. It helps them throughout their life.

How to Write the Perfect Essay

You can keep adding to this plan, crossing bits out and linking the different bubbles when you spot connections between them. Even though you won’t have time to make a detailed plan under exam conditions, it can be helpful to draft a brief one, including a few key words, so that you don’t panic and go off topic when writing your essay.

If you don’t like the mind map format, there are plenty of others to choose from: you could make a table, a flowchart, or simply a list of bullet points.

Thanks for signing up, step 2: have a clear structure.

Think about this while you’re planning: your essay is like an argument or a speech. It needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question.

Start with the basics! It’s best to choose a few major points which will become your main paragraphs. Three main paragraphs is a good number for an exam essay, since you’ll be under time pressure.

If you agree with the question overall, it can be helpful to organise your points in the following pattern:

  • YES (agreement with the question)
  • AND (another YES point)
  • BUT (disagreement or complication)

If you disagree with the question overall, try:

  • AND (another BUT point)

For example, you could structure the Of Mice and Men sample question, “To what extent is Curley’s wife portrayed as a victim in Of Mice and Men ?”, as follows:

  • YES (descriptions of her appearance)
  • AND (other people’s attitudes towards her)
  • BUT (her position as the only woman on the ranch gives her power as she uses her femininity to her advantage)

If you wanted to write a longer essay, you could include additional paragraphs under the YES/AND categories, perhaps discussing the ways in which Curley’s wife reveals her vulnerability and insecurities, and shares her dreams with the other characters. Alternatively, you could also lengthen your essay by including another BUT paragraph about her cruel and manipulative streak.

Of course, this is not necessarily the only right way to answer this essay question – as long as you back up your points with evidence from the text, you can take any standpoint that makes sense.

Step 3: Back up your points with well-analysed quotations

You wouldn’t write a scientific report without including evidence to support your findings, so why should it be any different with an essay? Even though you aren’t strictly required to substantiate every single point you make with a quotation, there’s no harm in trying.

A close reading of your quotations can enrich your appreciation of the question and will be sure to impress examiners. When selecting the best quotations to use in your essay, keep an eye out for specific literary techniques. For example, you could highlight Curley’s wife’s use of a rhetorical question when she says, a”n’ what am I doin’? Standin’ here talking to a bunch of bindle stiffs.” This might look like:

The rhetorical question “an’ what am I doin’?” signifies that Curley’s wife is very insecure; she seems to be questioning her own life choices. Moreover, she does not expect anyone to respond to her question, highlighting her loneliness and isolation on the ranch.

Other literary techniques to look out for include:

  • Tricolon – a group of three words or phrases placed close together for emphasis
  • Tautology – using different words that mean the same thing: e.g. “frightening” and “terrifying”
  • Parallelism – ABAB structure, often signifying movement from one concept to another
  • Chiasmus – ABBA structure, drawing attention to a phrase
  • Polysyndeton – many conjunctions in a sentence
  • Asyndeton – lack of conjunctions, which can speed up the pace of a sentence
  • Polyptoton – using the same word in different forms for emphasis: e.g. “done” and “doing”
  • Alliteration – repetition of the same sound, including assonance (similar vowel sounds), plosive alliteration (“b”, “d” and “p” sounds) and sibilance (“s” sounds)
  • Anaphora – repetition of words, often used to emphasise a particular point

Don’t worry if you can’t locate all of these literary devices in the work you’re analysing. You can also discuss more obvious techniques, like metaphor, simile and onomatopoeia. It’s not a problem if you can’t remember all the long names; it’s far more important to be able to confidently explain the effects of each technique and highlight its relevance to the question.

Step 4: Be creative and original throughout

Anyone can write an essay using the tips above, but the thing that really makes it “perfect” is your own unique take on the topic. If you’ve noticed something intriguing or unusual in your reading, point it out – if you find it interesting, chances are the examiner will too!

Creative writing and essay writing are more closely linked than you might imagine. Keep the idea that you’re writing a speech or argument in mind, and you’re guaranteed to grab your reader’s attention.

It’s important to set out your line of argument in your introduction, introducing your main points and the general direction your essay will take, but don’t forget to keep something back for the conclusion, too. Yes, you need to summarise your main points, but if you’re just repeating the things you said in your introduction, the body of the essay is rendered pointless.

Think of your conclusion as the climax of your speech, the bit everything else has been leading up to, rather than the boring plenary at the end of the interesting stuff.

To return to Of Mice and Men once more, here’s an example of the ideal difference between an introduction and a conclusion:

Introduction

In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men , Curley’s wife is portrayed as an ambiguous character. She could be viewed either as a cruel, seductive temptress or a lonely woman who is a victim of her society’s attitudes. Though she does seem to wield a form of sexual power, it is clear that Curley’s wife is largely a victim. This interpretation is supported by Steinbeck’s description of her appearance, other people’s attitudes, her dreams, and her evident loneliness and insecurity.
Overall, it is clear that Curley’s wife is a victim and is portrayed as such throughout the novel in the descriptions of her appearance, her dreams, other people’s judgemental attitudes, and her loneliness and insecurities. However, a character who was a victim and nothing else would be one-dimensional and Curley’s wife is not. Although she suffers in many ways, she is shown to assert herself through the manipulation of her femininity – a small rebellion against the victimisation she experiences.

Both refer back consistently to the question and summarise the essay’s main points. However, the conclusion adds something new which has been established in the main body of the essay and complicates the simple summary which is found in the introduction.

What is an essay?

Generally speaking, an essay designates a literary work in which the author defends a point of view or a personal conviction, using logical arguments and literary devices in order to inform and convince the reader.

So – although essays can be broadly split into four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive – an essay can simply be described as a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. 🤔

The purpose of an essay is to present a coherent argument in response to a stimulus or question and to persuade the reader that your position is credible, believable and reasonable. 👌

So, a ‘good’ essay relies on a confident writing style – it’s clear, well-substantiated, focussed, explanatory and descriptive . The structure follows a logical progression and above all, the body of the essay clearly correlates to the tile – answering the question where one has been posed.

But, how do you go about making sure that you tick all these boxes and keep within a specified word count? Read on for the answer as well as an example essay structure to follow and a handy step-by-step guide to writing the perfect essay – hooray. 🙌

Sometimes, it is helpful to think about your essay like it is a well-balanced argument or a speech – it needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question in a coherent manner. ⚖️

Of course, essays can vary significantly in length but besides that, they all follow a fairly strict pattern or structure made up of three sections. Lean into this predictability because it will keep you on track and help you make your point clearly. Let’s take a look at the typical essay structure:

#1 Introduction

Start your introduction with the central claim of your essay. Let the reader know exactly what you intend to say with this essay. Communicate what you’re going to argue, and in what order. The final part of your introduction should also say what conclusions you’re going to draw – it sounds counter-intuitive but it’s not – more on that below. 1️⃣

Make your point, evidence it and explain it. This part of the essay – generally made up of three or more paragraphs depending on the length of your essay – is where you present your argument. The first sentence of each paragraph – much like an introduction to an essay – should summarise what your paragraph intends to explain in more detail. 2️⃣

#3 Conclusion

This is where you affirm your argument – remind the reader what you just proved in your essay and how you did it. This section will sound quite similar to your introduction but – having written the essay – you’ll be summarising rather than setting out your stall. 3️⃣

No essay is the same but your approach to writing them can be. As well as some best practice tips, we have gathered our favourite advice from expert essay-writers and compiled the following 7-step guide to writing a good essay every time. 👍

#1 Make sure you understand the question

#2 complete background reading.

#3 Make a detailed plan

#4 Write your opening sentences

#5 flesh out your essay in a rough draft, #6 evidence your opinion, #7 final proofread and edit.

Now that you have familiarised yourself with the 7 steps standing between you and the perfect essay, let’s take a closer look at each of those stages so that you can get on with crafting your written arguments with confidence .

This is the most crucial stage in essay writing – r ead the essay prompt carefully and understand the question. Highlight the keywords – like ‘compare,’ ‘contrast’ ‘discuss,’ ‘explain’ or ‘evaluate’ – and let it sink in before your mind starts racing . There is nothing worse than writing 500 words before realising you have entirely missed the brief . 🧐

Unless you are writing under exam conditions , you will most likely have been working towards this essay for some time, by doing thorough background reading. Re-read relevant chapters and sections, highlight pertinent material and maybe even stray outside the designated reading list, this shows genuine interest and extended knowledge. 📚

#3 Make a detailed plan

Following the handy structure we shared with you above, now is the time to create the ‘skeleton structure’ or essay plan. Working from your essay title, plot out what you want your paragraphs to cover and how that information is going to flow. You don’t need to start writing any full sentences yet but it might be useful to think about the various quotes you plan to use to substantiate each section. 📝

Having mapped out the overall trajectory of your essay, you can start to drill down into the detail. First, write the opening sentence for each of the paragraphs in the body section of your essay. Remember – each paragraph is like a mini-essay – the opening sentence should summarise what the paragraph will then go on to explain in more detail. 🖊️

Next, it's time to write the bulk of your words and flesh out your arguments. Follow the ‘point, evidence, explain’ method. The opening sentences – already written – should introduce your ‘points’, so now you need to ‘evidence’ them with corroborating research and ‘explain’ how the evidence you’ve presented proves the point you’re trying to make. ✍️

With a rough draft in front of you, you can take a moment to read what you have written so far. Are there any sections that require further substantiation? Have you managed to include the most relevant material you originally highlighted in your background reading? Now is the time to make sure you have evidenced all your opinions and claims with the strongest quotes, citations and material. 📗

This is your final chance to re-read your essay and go over it with a fine-toothed comb before pressing ‘submit’. We highly recommend leaving a day or two between finishing your essay and the final proofread if possible – you’ll be amazed at the difference this makes, allowing you to return with a fresh pair of eyes and a more discerning judgment. 🤓

What Does Practice Makes Perfect Mean?

mm

You’ve likely been told “practice makes perfect” many times before by your parents or a teacher, coach, or other mentor. It’s an extremely common expression—and a pretty catchy one, too. But do you know what it means? Let’s explore its definition, origin, and the answer to the question that inherently arises from it: Does practice in fact make perfect?!

essay practice makes perfect

Your writing, at its best

Compose bold, clear, mistake-free, writing with Grammarly's AI-powered writing assistant

This idiomatic and proverbial expression (more below) is used to convey the idea that the way to become skilled at something is to practice it often. In other words, doing something over and over and over again helps you become proficient or very good at it. (In this expression, the definition of practice is “to do or perform often or habitually.”)

Think about it: If you want to be a great pianist, you have to play the piano a lot, right? If you want to become a professional football player, you have to play in lots of games and attend tons of afternoon practices, yes? And if you want to succeed in chemistry, you have to study hard, complete assignments, and take tests, don’t you? When someone tells you that “practice makes perfect,” they’re encouraging you to keep at a particular endeavor—to continue learning and honing the skills that will help you excel in that effort, even master it, and ultimately reach your goals.

Here are some example sentences using the phrase practice makes perfect :

  • There were times when I was learning to play guitar that I wanted to give up because it was so difficult. My teacher always said, “Practice makes perfect,” and he was right: I stuck with it, and after years of lessons and practicing at home, I now make a living playing guitar in a band!
  • My high school algebra teacher always makes us do tons and tons of equations; she says that practice makes perfect.
  • Marcia wanted to win the baking competition in New York more than anything in the world. Knowing that practice makes perfect, she made her signature cake at home 15 times before the big day.
  • I wasn’t very good at calligraphy when I started my wedding invitation business. But practice makes perfect, and now clients from all over the country order from me because of my skill.

essay practice makes perfect

The Phrase’s Origin

According to language historians, the idiom and proverb comes from a Latin phrase with a very similar meaning. In English, it most likely dates to the mid-1500s in its present form, although the variation use makes mastery was likely popular before that time. It’s possible practice makes perfect first appeared in writing in the Diary and Autobiography of John Adams , published in part in the 1850s. Like many other proverbs and idioms, its history isn’t entirely clear.

Does Practice Really Make Perfect?

You might be asking yourself, “If I practice something enough can I truly become perfect at it?” While the word perfect can mean “completely flawless,” or without any fault or defect whatsoever, in terms of this phrase, it simply means “proficient or expert”; in other words, “skilled.” After all, you may have also heard someone say, “There’s no such thing as perfect” or “There’s no such thing as perfection.” Indeed, perfection is difficult to attain, and in some instances impossible. It’s also often objective, meaning open for interpretation.

For example, if you study for your English test enough, you may score a 100, which is indeed a perfect grade. If you practice violin for most of your life, will you finally be a perfect player? It depends on who you ask and what their definition of “perfect” is. Most people will say there’s always room for improvement.

You may also be asking yourself if practice is the only thing that matters, or if your intelligence, innate talent, and other factors also play important roles in your success with a subject or activity. If you are, you’re not alone: Scientists and researchers have been asking this question for decades, and working to find an answer. (It’s an example of the nature vs. nurture debate, which we discussed when looking at the phrase like father, like son .) What do their studies show? One well-known study suggests that practice accounts for about 80 percent of the difference between an expert-level performance and an amateur performance; it’s this study that seems to have led to the “10,000 rule,” or the idea that if you practice something for 10,000 hours or more, you become an expert at it. (The idea was popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers .) Yet, other newer studies show that while practice is absolutely vital in learning a new skill, it may not play as big of a role as earlier researchers thought.

While scientists may not fully concur on what percentage practice plays in success, they do agree that even if you’re incredibly smart or born with an amazing knack for something, practice is still very important in helping you achieve proficiency and expertise. Though, practice alone doesn’t guarantee a successful outcome.

What Are Idioms and Proverbs?

Practice makes perfect is considered both an idiom and a proverb. An idiom is an expression with an intended meaning that typically can’t fully be understood just by looking at the words that comprise it. Even if you’ve never heard the term idiom , you have most likely heard many idiomatic expressions. Here are just a few of the most common idioms used today:

You’re in hot water. His boss gave him the ax. It’s time to face the music. You’ve hit the nail on the head. If you took the first example literally, you’d think it was describing a person standing in a bathtub full of hot water, perhaps. But the expression is actually used to describe a person who’s in trouble. Likewise, rather than literally being handed a tool for chopping wood, if you get the ax from your boss, it means you’re getting fired. It’s time to face the music means that it’s time to come to terms with the consequences of your actions. And when someone has hit the nail on the head, they’ve gotten an answer exactly right or done something exactly as it should have been done. Practice makes perfect is a little different than other idioms, in that if you take it at face value, you’re likely to understand its intended meaning. However, if you take it entirely literally, you may understand it to mean that practice makes you absolutely perfect at something, when in fact, the expression is used more figuratively to mean that practice helps you become good or proficient in a skill. A proverb is a short, common phrase or saying that imparts wisdom and advice or shares a universal truth. Synonyms of the term proverb include adage, aphorism, and maxim . Here are some additional examples of well-known proverbs: Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Blood is thicker than water . A picture is worth a thousand words. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . Discover many more idioms and proverbs here . Some language experts also consider practice makes perfect a cliché . What is a cliché? A trite, overused expression; a phrase that has perhaps become too commonplace. For example, the saying end all be all is considered by many to be a cliché.

The idiomatic and proverbial expression practice makes perfect is used to convey that doing something repeatedly can lead to proficiency in it. It means that to become very good at something, be it a subject in school or a musical instrument or sport, you should practice it regularly, over and over.

Practice Makes Perfect: How Writing Every Day Can Make You a Better Writer

#scribendiinc

Written by  Eilish Toohey

Madeleine L'Engle , author of A Wrinkle in Time , once gave the following three pieces of advice for aspiring authors:

Madeleine L'Engle Quote on Writing

L'Engle is one of many authors who recommend daily writing practice, yet it is this piece of advice that tends to turn people away. This is completely understandable. Having to force yourself to write every day sounds tedious, and, if writing practice seems like a chore, you will likely try to avoid doing it.

That said, if you're interested in becoming a better writer, making a habit of writing every day can greatly improve your writing skills.

Make Writing a Habit

Think of writing practice as a form of exercise. If you decided to take up running for the first time or were returning to running after being out of commission for a long period, would you be ready to immediately do a marathon?

Of course not. You would have to train for an extremely long time to strengthen your muscles and improve your stamina. The same goes for writing. If you are no longer in school or have a job that does not involve regular writing tasks, these skills can enter a state of atrophy. Much like our muscles, we need to habitually practice writing so we remain in top condition.

Writing every day does not mean that you need to draft a full-length novel or 51 essays every 24 hours. As impressive as that would be, no one has time to do that. We all have responsibilities throughout the day that take away from our free time—jobs, school, children, dogs, houseplants, pet rocks—but just because you have a busy schedule does not mean that it is impossible to find time to write.

One of Canada's most prolific authors, Alice Munro, managed to start a writing career while simultaneously running a bookstore and raising three children by sticking to short stories . If you can set aside 30 minutes to an hour every day for writing practice (and set yourself a word or page limit to meet), you can become a better writer. You should also aim to schedule your writing practice for the same time every day so it becomes a habit.

Overcoming Obstacles

One reason that people find it difficult to write every day is writer's block. We have all been there. Instead of writing, we distract ourselves with other activities while we wait for inspiration to arrive.

However, daily writing practice is actually the best way to combat writer's block. As Mario Vargas Llosa once said in an interview with The Paris Review:

"If I started to wait for moments of inspiration, I would never finish a book. Inspiration for me comes from a regular effort."

If you're having a hard time with your current project, use your time set aside for writing practice to write lists about odd habits of yours or about people that you see on the street. While these may not immediately spark ideas for your current project, you can always come back to what you wrote later; you never know what interesting ideas might spring forth when you revisit old writing. This is also a good way to help organize your thoughts, which can be another factor that keeps inspiration from flowing.

Writing every day can help you become more aware of the limits of your vocabulary. The more you write, the more obvious that frequent word choices become. Once you know your limitations, you can expand your vocabulary by finding stronger words or experimenting with word order to see if there are other ways to get your message across. In this way, writing practice can help you craft a distinct voice, which is something that every good writer must have, and it can help you on your journey to becoming a better writer.

Get yourself a notebook and set aside an hour every day just to write. Write about strange dreams that you had. Record what happened at work today. Try little writing exercises—Scribendi actually offers free writing prompts, which you can download here . Do not feel discouraged if your initial writing is not great; the whole point of practicing is to steadily improve your skills, which you can only do if you have something to work with. As short story author Katherine Mansfield once said:

"[It is] better far write twaddle or anything, anything, than nothing at all."

How to make the most of English practice essays

Practice essays are important. But you need to actually use them in order to make the ‘practice makes perfect’ stand true to its words.

2 years ago   •   4 min read

You’re often told by your teacher to churn out as many practice essays as possible in order to get better at essay writing. While practice does make perfect, churning out a million essays isn’t really going to get you anywhere. You may think I’m messing with you but hear me out: Practice essays are important. But you need to actually use them in order to make the ‘practice makes perfect’ stand true to its words. If you feel super frustrated with practice essays right now and feel like you’re getting nowhere with them, the following tips listed below will probably benefit you a lot.

So how do you really use practice essays?

Break down your essay

In the same way that you would break down a paragraph from a text in class, you need to pretend that your entire essay is a piece of text that you need to analyse and evaluate. This time is incredibly valuable and is often skipped over by many students. It is quite literally the purpose of writing a practice essay. Breaking down your essay will allow you to understand what elements you have included and what is missing. This is essential to know if you have ticked all the required sections of your marking criteria. But enough fluff. How exactly do you break down your essay?

If you have access to sample essays or even essays written by high scoring past students, use them! (And by use I don’t mean copy) In regard to your practice essay, the most effective way to directly know whether you have included the essential components is by laying it next to a copy of the sample essay and comparing. First start by having a pre-annotated copy of your sample essay. This pre-annotated sample must identify each sentence and its role; for example, the linking sentence must be identified (It’s best to annotate the sample essay by yourself so you understand it better. Ask your teacher if you are not sure. They will love you for it!)

Now back to your own essay. Highlight each sentence or section of the essay that directly contributes to the essay structure. Don’t just highlight the intro, body, and conclusion. You need to make sure you identify the topic sentence, the aesthetic feature/stylistic device, the linking sentence etc. You can even use a colour code system. Learning to identify these sentences will make you better at using and identifying them subconsciously in your next essay. This is probably the best technique to truly learn from your essay as you will know what you directly need to improve on for next time. This method is a great way to gain confidence in your writing as well. Although it seems time consuming and does require a bit of patience, I assure you that it is worth your time.

Read and incorporate your feedback

Often, when you’re writing essays as practice for yourself, you don’t always get feedback from teachers and other peers. But when you do receive an opportunity to have your essay marked, use the feedback!

I know this sounds super cliché and repetitive but it’s crazy how much improvement you can see in your next essay when you properly apply your feedback. Quite frequently, students tend to believe that looking at feedback is a waste of time, and it is better spent writing another essay, but doing this is kind of like shooting yourself in the foot before a race. You are more likely to repeat the same mistakes again in your next essay. The best way to actually improve is to ask someone like your english tutor to read over your essay and provide actionable feedback. So yes, essentially one of the best things you can do for yourself to ‘study smart and not hard’ is to use your feedback effectively.

Rewrite the same essay

Another reason why you might not see improvements in your essays could be because you’re not that familiar with certain aspects of essay writing. For instance, you may not be that great at integrating audience positioning in your writing. Acknowledging this is the first step to improvement. So, instead of ignoring this fact and jumping to the next essay, it's best to pause. I highly recommend developing one skill at a time for immediate improvement. In this circumstance, the best approach would be to rewrite the essay again with a focus on directly improving your ability to seamlessly integrate audience positioning. If you’re like me (basically lazy) then you don’t even have to write a whole essay. Skip the intro and conclusion and focus directly on your body paragraph; it requires more attention.

Targeted practice

Usually, students like to stay in their comfort zone by only practising the things they’re good at. It’s often stressful to make mistakes and it feels good when you get something right. In this case, you might be the type who tends to use easier themes and concepts repeatedly. Or only exploring one aspect of a text or even just repeating the same thesis idea again. While this may perfect your understanding of a specific area, it’s not an effective method to improve overall. The more exposure you get to different concepts, ideas, and themes, the better your understanding of the overall subject will be. Plus, a wider understanding of different topics is a great confidence booster. In unseen essay exams, any kind of topic can be asked; therefore, it's best to push yourself out of your comfort zone and practise difficult concepts and topics. ‘Knowledge and understanding’ is a highly weighted criteria that can influence your performance in other areas such as organisation or development. So having a firm grip on the content will allow you to see exponential improvement in each of your essays.

Practice is the best friend which leads us towards success and make the knowledge remain with us.

It helps people to awaken their lethargic potential by inducing confidence level. It calms our mind and gives happiness as practicing anything is like a meditation. We can achieve anything and reach to the unreachable heights in our life through practice. It prepares us to go in right direction and sharpen our abilities to face challenges and win. Practice is the continuous activity which enhances the will power and encourages us to run to the goal with strong perfection.
