Descriptive Essay: Singapore

Singapore is an island country in Southeast Asia, just off the Malay Peninsula and 85 miles north of the equator. The country is young but well developed with leaning skyscrapers, diverse communities and unique buildings. Singapore has many cultures living within it, as a result there is a very diverse way of life with people speaking many languages and worshiping a number of different religions. Such a wide range of cultures makes the country very accepting of others.

In 1963 Singapore gained independence from the United Kingdom. Many of the people who lived in Singapore went there from India, Malaysia and China in seek of labouring work to earn money. After independence was granted the process of finding a single Singaporean identity began. The country has been called a society in transition because of the fact that the people who live there do not speak the same language, share religious beliefs or even come from the same culture. English is declared to be the nation’s first language, however in a census by the government, just 80% of Singaporeans were literate in English. The diverse culture can be noticed when you walk the streets to see mosques, synagogues and churches.

The main streets in Singapore are busy, colourful and filled with the inviting aromas of street food. It is here where you can devour delicious prawn noodles or a bowl of Wee Nam Kee chicken. Food from the street vendors is bursting with local flavours and is irresistible after a long day walking through the streets and shopping in the malls.

The island is small and the population is large at 5,312,400. The large population means that things can feel rather crowded in the main streets. Pedestrians and drivers have to keep to the left to ensure a smooth travel for everyone, whether on foot or in a car. There are not too many private cars in Singapore, however taxis flood the roads. Car prices are much higher in the country and the cost for just obtaining a Singaporean certificate of Entitlement would buy you a Porsche Boxter in America. Just one in every 10 people own cars due to the expense, many choose the cheaper alternative of traveling by bicycle, on foot, bus, train and taxis.

In the dark of night the city of Singapore lights up. The stunning skyline reflects off of the Singapore River and illuminates the sky. On the river there aren’t just straight up skyscrapers, there is even a quirky building which has curved sides and looks as though a space ship has landed on top of its roof.

Singapore is warm and wet. The tropical rainforest climate means that there are no actual defined seasons. The geographical location means that the country has high humidity and lots of rainfall, with around 92.1 inches each year. The sun shines strongest in March, with the highest recorded temperature at 36 degrees. Singaporeans dress in clothes suitable for the heat and humidity, wearing T-shirts, shorts and slippers.

Singapore is a beautiful city that it is very suitable for tourism and living. I was noted it in a tourist TV show, beautiful environment of the whole city, comfortable climate, the various national delicacies, as well as romantic seaside beach and park are particularly attractive. Singapore also has almost 70 percent overseas Chinese people, you have not worry about language and community. It certain that if you go there you will love this city .

Singapore has clean and tidy living environment, and its environmental protection and greening are doing very well. As soon as you get to Singapore, you will think this is a city surrounded by green. It is often called "Garden City" that green coverage reached around 70%, it’s particularly comfortable with fresh air to living. Roads in Singapore are pretty neat and clean, especially beautiful with all kinds of flowers and trees along the street, walking on the road just as on a park. Environmental propagate everywhere in this city, the bus and subway often play lots of interesting videos and paste posters for people to convey the concept of environmental protection. Moreover, Singapore is very good to deal with the garbage to sorted and recycled, especially the dustbin is designed into the form of cans and newspaper that easy to identify. No matter where you are in Singapore, you can realize tidy of this beautiful city.

Singapore has particularly plentiful food culture . Go to there you must not miss the special local food. Not the big restaurants but the economical of the local restaurant with old flavor is particularly attractive. Singapore, itself is a multi-ethnic immigrant city, it contains Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian. So that you can eat various type food in Singapore. Food center is a feature in Singapore, Hawker Center, Newton Circle Food, Maxwell Road Food all of those are the famous food centers.

Additional, Singapore has perfect public services which makes life could be very comfortable. The transportation is also convenient, public transport and subway can let you go wherever your want to go. Its handicapped facilities are also pretty sound, whether in the airport, bus station, residential area, or the road, are equipped with a complete disability facilities. This city also offers a wide range of free parks, beaches and libraries, all of which are good places for home travel. In the beach is equipped with the runway, everywhere you will see the young and old men or women are exercising. Singapore also provides a variety of free parks, entertainment places for residents life. The most famous park is the Gardens by the Bay , a vertical plant full of big tree, and light show combined to create a landmark garden kingdom. Solar power lighting and sustainable water cycling also showcase really high environmental philosophy of Singapore.

Do you want to Visit Singapore?

I’ve been here several times, and each time I find something new and more interesting than the last time. A lot of travelers are just going here for 2-3 days, and some even just as short as 1 day or a layover. This is something that I would like to change because Singapore has way more to offer, and it isn’t as expensive as some suggest either.

There are plenty of things to do and places to visit in Singapore, and if you haven’t yet been, here are 55 reasons why I think everyone should visit Singapore at least once in their lifetime!

So, from my understanding, the food is an essential part of Singaporean culture and rightly so I think. Few kitchens in the world have such a broad and diverse range of foods being served. Due to the great mixture of cultures, you can find everything from Malay dishes, Indian food, Arab dishes, Chinese food, Japanese food and also international food and much more.

If you’re a foodie, then this is probably the ultimate reason why you should visit Singapore. Here are some traditional Singaporean dishes:

2. Joo Chiat

Colorful neighborhood with iconic shophouses. Definitely another good reason to visit Singapore as you get history and beautiful colorful building at the same place.

3. Fantastic architecture

Singapore might be the greatest mix between the old and new when it comes to architecture. There are many cultural buildings and historical places, yet there are stunning innovative skyscrapers and attractions all over the place.

4. Little India

Ever wanted to visit India? Well, in Singapore you have an area called little India where most of the people with Indian origin reside. Here you’ll find temples, shops and lots of Indian restaurants. And since I’ve been to India, I can tell you that it’s quite similar and very authentic!

5. Arab Street & Masjid Sultan

One of my favorite places in Singapore. The Masjid Sultan mosque is breathtaking and reminds me of the palace in the Disney movie Aladdin, and the Arab street is filled with shops, cafés, and restaurants serving delicious food and drinks!

6. Sentosa Island

The leisure island of the Metropolis. Here you can find plenty of theme parks and fun things to do with kids. For example, Sentosa Island is where you’ll go if you’re visiting Universal Studios. Sentosa is also home to some great beach spots, and you can get here either via cable car or taxi/bus.

7. Hawker centers

Food is a big part of the Singaporean culture, and there are so many hawker centers that I’m sure you won’t have time to visit all of them unless you live there. However, you should visit one of these hawker centers and try several foods that are being sold there daily.

Locals go to these for socializing and eat delicious food!

8. Chinatown

Did you know that there are many Chinese descendants living in Singapore? A lot of them live in Chinatown, where you can experience some real Chinese culture. Look at temples, experience Chinese New Year, Eat Chinese food and of course buy endless amounts of Chinese products!

9. Pandan Cake and a cup of hot Milo

Want to indulge yourself with some Singaporean desserts? Then Pandan Cake is a great start, which is best enjoyed with a cup of hot Milo!It’s really delicious and definitely something you should try when you visit Singapore!

10. It’s super clean!

The Singaporean streets and public transport stations are probably the cleanest ones I’ve ever seen, even cleaner than Japan. If you come here as a tourist, you should also know that you could get some hefty fines for littering.

This is basically dried noodles with a flavor that you eat raw.

12. It’s a melting pot of cultures

Malay, Chinese, Indian and also a Eurasian mix from the colonial times have all lived together here for centuries, which has created a really cool mix where cultures from all over Asia and also Europe meet and mix.

13. Clarke Quay

This historical and colorful riverside quay is worth a visit. Nowadays it has turned into a lively nightlife area, so if you’re going clubbing, this is a great place to go!

14. Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is probably one of my favorite man-made tourist attractions in the world. The supertree grove is impressive and cool, and each night they also offer a free incredible light show!

15. The world’s tallest indoor waterfall

At the Gardens by the Bay, you can also visit a place called the cloud forest, where you can stand in front of the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. It’s pretty spectacular, and the cloud forest itself is a cool experience.

16. Changi Airport

So, normally I wouldn’t list an airport as a reason to visit a country, but Changi Airport is different. It has been selected as the best airport in the world several times. So, don’t worry if you have a long layover because you’ll have plenty things to do.

17. Street Art

There are a few really cool spots where you can see street art in various forms. Singapore is a really creative place!

18. Tau Huay

Whether you like it hot or cold, done traditionally or in the modern pudding form, this is one dessert that you should try!

19. It’s one of the greenest cities in the world

Yes, Singapore is very modern and has a lot of skyscrapers, but they have kept big chunks of green scattered across the country!

20. Marina Bay Sands

The whole Marina Bay is stunning, but the most striking building is, of course, the boat resembling skyscraper with the most incredible infinity pool ever. The hotel of Marina Bay Sands is reason enough to visit Singapore!

21. Shopping

If I were to mention 3 shopping destinations in Asia, I would probably say Bangkok, Singapore and Tokyo. You can find almost anything in here and the shopping center at Marina Bay is super cool!

22. Lazarus island

Another stunning island where you can find a lovely paradise beach. Perfect to go for a day trip.

23. Helix Bridge

Probably one of the most creative bridges ever made.

24. Formula 1

Like fast cars? Every year, you can enjoy the Formula 1 in the Singaporean streets.

25. Universal Studios

So, not every city has its own Universal Studios, but here in Singapore, you can enjoy all the fun this theme park has to offer! Like the muppets for example.

26. Fountain of Wealth

How about watching the light show at the World’s largest fountain?

The oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, and an important attraction. The Gopuram is especially beautiful and worth seeing.

30. There are so many Instagram worthy places

If there is one destination to choose as the most Instagram worthy, then I would say that Singapore is a really great contender. There are so many colorful and cool spots to take photos at, and it’s not just the major tourist attractions, there are so many more cool places to see!

31. Nightlife

The Singaporeans know how to party and the presence of expats from all over the world has also resulted in an impressive nightlife scene.

An island on the eastern coast that’s considered the last “kampung” (village).

34. Raffles Hotel

One of the most iconic hotels in Singapore.

35. Singapore Sling

The iconic drink is, of course, something you should sip on at least once!

36. It’s really cheap with Uber and Grab

While Singapore is probably the most expensive South East Asian destination, somehow the Uber and Grab, and also general taxis are quite cheap and they’re an easy way to get around this metropolis.

37. Pulau Hantu

One of the Southern islands, that is actually made up of two islets called “Big Ghost Island” and “Small Ghost Island”. At low tide you can walk between the two islets, and the name is thought to come from the fact that Malay warriors used to duell over there, so it’s said that their ghosts is still wandering around the island.

38. Orchidville

If you like orchids, then Orchidville is another good reason to visit Singapore. Here you can see plenty of rare and exotic orchids, which also the Singaporean national flower.

39. It’s a really safe country

Crime levels are very low here, and even if you walk home in the middle of the night, you won’t have to worry about being robbed or assaulted.

40. Siloso Beach/Palawan Beach

Probably the best beach to go to if you want to do some tanning and have a lazy day on the beach while you visit Singapore.

The iconic Merlion is a great symbol and totally one of the tourist spots you have to see.

42. Wild Wild Wet

A water adventure park if you want to get wet and have some fun in the water when you visit Singapore!

43. Interesting Wildlife

There are plenty of animals to see in the wild here in Singapore, such as pink dolphins, hawksbill turtles, dugongs, flying lemurs, the stink bug, porcupines and many more!

44. Pink Rose Tutu Kueh

A small cake that is steamed and filled with either coconut or crushed peanuts.

45. Orchard Road

Probably the most famous shopping street in Asia where you can definitely shop til you drop. Orchard road is a shopaholic’s paradise!

Like Chili? This Singaporean brand makes a very special kind with 3 levels of spiciness.

47. Tiong Bahru

A charming neighborhood with plenty of eateries and cafés as well as local shops.

48. Bukit Timah Railway Station

Perfect spot to take cool railway photos as you don’t have to worry about trains coming.

49. Singapore Botanic Garden

A huge garden where they showcase the best and most spectacular tropical flora.

50. Ice Kacang – A good reason to visit Singapore

A syrup flavored shaved ice dessert with various toppings. After talking with some Singaporeans almost all agreed that Ice Kacang was one of their favorite desserts.

51. Rooftop bars

With skyscrapers usually comes some cool rooftop bars, and Singapore is not an exception. If you like to sit high in the sky and sip on drinks, there are plenty of hip places to choose from such as 1-Altitude, Ce La Vi, Level 33 and Kinki Rooftop bar.

52. Art Museum

At this museum, you’ll find the largest collection of modern South East Asian art, and also lots of cool contemporary art.

54. Thian Hock Keng Temple

An important part of Singapore’s history. This temple was built to worship the Chinese sea goddess – Mazu.

55. The mix of culture and people

I’ve already mentioned the diverse culture of Singapore, but the Singaporeans themselves is another good reason to visit Singapore! They’re friendly, progressive, tolerant and modern.

And most importantly, despite their different ethnic backgrounds they live in peace and harmony, and that’s something I admire a lot!

You got everything covered up!! Like you said why would someone list an airport in a blog like this but changi airport is really different, its like a big mall that has a hotel inside it (lol), also Universal Studios, its a must to visit if you are in Singapore with your family.

If you know me, you know that the title of this post is a bold statement. I’ve lived in New York City for the past 8 years, and I never thought I’d love a city more than New York. Until, I discovered Singapore. Singapore has all of the things I love about New York and then some. So, why visit Singapore? Here’s my answer…

Singapore is so clean!

This is probably the weirdest reason to love a place, but if you’ve spent time in any city, you probably thought it was impossible for a city to be clean. Singapore proved that theory wrong. There’s no litter. There’s no garbage smell wafting from the trash cans (even in the 90 degree heat). There’s no gum on the sidewalk because it’s illegal to chew it here. There’s no graffiti or vandalism on the walls (except the artsy streets and restaurants where it’s encouraged). The people of this city respect their home, and it shows. Every street is immaculate and well cared for.

It’s ultra modern & has old world charm!

Walk down any street in Chinatown or Kampong Glam and you’re surrounded with well cared for adorable little buildings full of charm. Go a few blocks south and be surrounded by awe-inspiring skyscrapers that seem to defy gravity. The architecture here is incredible but that’s not all. Being in this city somehow feels like you’ve stepped 20 years into the future and yet tradition is still held near and dear to the heart. It’s the best of both worlds.

It’s a bustling city yet it’s calm!

Most cities I’ve visited seem to thrive off of chaos, but Singapore feels more like an oasis. Cars don’t honk their horns. No one is yelling at each other. People get on and off the subway without pushing others out of the way. Everyone seems to be going somewhere, but they aren’t in such a rush that they’re aggravated. Maybe it’s the location of Singapore being right on the water. Maybe it has to do with the culture. Or maybe it’s because it’s not that crowded here. Even in the busiest areas there’s so much space that everyone has their own personal bubble. A luxury no one has in NYC.

Singapore is very safe!

Singapore has a low crime rate and you can tell when you visit. Most streets are so beautifully kept and well lit that even at night you feel safe walking around. On top of that, I haven’t seen many homeless people or beggars in Singapore. After a quick Google search, I found that there are about 900 homeless people in Singapore out of 5.5 million. The crazy thing is, the article confirming the number thought it extremely high.

There have even been months where there has not been a single robbery in Singapore which seems impossible in a city this size. Meanwhile, back in New York, shootings, robbery, sexual assault, and gang violence are all pretty common issues.

They’ve gone green!

You may not notice it right away, but walk down any street in Singapore and if there isn’t a building, a sidewalk, or a road, there are tons of trees, plants, and grass. Head down to Gardens by the Bay and you’ll see that most of the tourist attractions are helping the environment. Whether it’s the Super Trees, the Flower Dome, or the Cloud Forest you’re inadvertently learning about the environment, nature, and supporting a green movement. Add in the buildings that are “going green” around the city and you’ll realize how refreshing it is to be in a city that cares about its impact on the environment.

There’s amazing food!

Now, if none of that won you over, this will. The food here is amazing. There are so many incredible cultures to learn from in Singapore, and the food options show that off. On one street you can have Italian, Mediterranean, French, Chinese, Indian, Turkish, Portuguese, and the list goes on and on. There is no shortage of choices here. The real winner though is the traditional hawker stalls. It’s like a mall of delicious food at affordable prices. You can choose from some of the best local food you can find. There are even Michelin rated stalls where you can get an entire meal for under $5.

I’m sure there are more things that I love about this city, but it’d be hard to write them all, so I’ll finish up my ode to Singapore by asking if you’ve been here? If so, what did you love about this tiny country? If not, what are you waiting for, add it to that travel bucket list now!

Sounds amazing! Never would have thought about even gong to Singapore until I read this. Not at all what I pictured or imagined for a such a small country.

My Favorite Countries in the World (from a traveler who’s been to nearly 100)

What’s your favorite country?

I get asked this question all the time.

It’s the most difficult to answer. The short answer is, I don’t have one. I have many favorites. I like different places for different reasons. In no particular order, I’ll list all of my favorites.

My Favorite Countries in the World

Greece has been on my mind since I fell in love with the island of Lesvos in 2017. After leaving Greece, I couldn’t shake it from my memory. Traveling around other Mediterranean countries the thought crossed my mind “It’s nice here, but it’s certainly not Greece.” I know that’s the wrong mentality, but hey, those are my feelings, and feelings can’t be wrong, right? So apologies to lovely Albania and Malta, but if I only had one week to live, I’d be eating souvlaki and sipping a thick Greek coffee in some vine-shaded village square somewhere in the Aegean.

Malaysia is perhaps the best food country in the world . I say that because it is home to three outstanding cuisines of its diverse population. Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine are all readily available and because of Malaysia’s eating out culture, meals are affordably priced for locals. Much of the best food is served at mom and pop cafes or from carts at food centers. But Malaysia is more than just food. Its mix of indigenous and other cultures means different customs, holidays, religions, and so on. Plus, I love the architecture of the former Straits Settlements on peninsular Malaysia ( Penang , Malacca). On Borneo, there is some nice wildlife viewing (albeit under threat from agriculture/habitat loss)

I entered into the world of Central Asia in my early twenties as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan. While I absolutely loved my host country and its people (perhaps the world’s most hospitable) I also grew very fond of Kyrgyzstan . It’s a land of high-altitude pastures and cool, clear lakes. One of snow-capped peaks and bubbling hot springs and people willing to invite a stranger into their yurt for a cup of fermented mare’s milk. I like Kyrgyzstan so much that I wanted to take other travelers there and now I do. If this sounds like your cup of kumis then you should join us. See my Kyrgyzstan trekking trip for more info.

I fell in love with the landscape and culture of Spain on my first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in 2005. I returned in 2008 for another Camino (Via de la Plata) and to stay to teach English. I ended up living there for about a year, enjoying tapas and wine after work, exploring the neighborhoods of Madrid, and getting into the rhythm of the Spanish lifestyle. The typical traveler to Spain enjoys the incredible cuisine here, the diversity of the country’s distinct regions, its rich art and architectural heritage, and the history of its small cities, towns, and villages throughout the countryside.

Spain’s neighbor to the west is another of my favorite places. You can tell I have an affinity for this part of the world. Portugal’s historical towns and cities are intriguing and its coastline is delectable . Portuguese are proud but very open to outsiders and well-educated. There’s a bit of Roman history here, some top-notch winemaking, delicious food, and thought-provoking street art. But most of all for me it’s the atmosphere of Portugal that I love most, and that’s what sticks out in my memory. I just loved being there.

South Korea

I’ve been to South Korea on several occasions. I’ve taught English there, lived there temporarily on other occasions, and explored most corners of this small mountainous peninsula. Koreans have a strong identity tied to their land, cuisine, and language . There are many distinct aspects of Korean society and the Korean people are proud of their heritage . They hold on to many of their traditions while embracing change and modernity in a fast-paced world . I may be biased because I married a Korean, but this is an intelligent society with a high quality of life.

Peru is too intriguing a place not to mention in this list. What’s so great about Peru is the diversity of experiences one can have there. You can ride a dune buggy across towering dunes, admire the work of ancient pre-Incan civilizations, surf some of the Pacific’s best waves, see an enormous array of wildlife, venture into the Amazon (which makes up a third of Peru!), and take on some of the best trekking in the Andes . Eat your way through Lima , South America’s foodie city. And did I mention Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley? Enough Inca sights and Quechua culture to take a week of your time.

I traveled for a few weeks in Syria before the civil war. What I remember most is how completely foreign everything was to me. Not even the same numbers system was used! But also I remember how welcoming people were. Syrians chatted with me, bought me lunch, and helped me find my way when I was lost. It is a country with a magnificent cultural heritage, extraordinary ruins (much of which have been destroyed in the war), a vast desert landscape, and some of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet.

The digital nomad in me fell in love with Romania and wanted to stay. Who doesn’t love affordability and lightning-fast internet ? But Romania is much more. What interests me most are the old Saxon towns and villages of Transylvania, the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, and the folk traditions of Maramureș. Add to that some delicious Romanian food and a trip to the capital Bucharest, which has an enticing mix of architecture from numerous eras. The combination was enough for me to work remotely from Bucharest for a month and develop a small group tour to Transylvania .

The thing that everyone notices about Japan is its seamless fusion of the old and new. In addition to that, the Japanese do urban society like no one else. Japanese cities work flawlessly. They are efficient, clean, crowded, and somehow quiet. But I also love hiking in Japan’s mountains, following its pilgrim trails, soaking in its hot springs , sipping its bowls of noodles, and eating its fresh seafood catch. I am also most happy riding Japanese trains. One thing I’d like people to know is that Japan is not as expensive as they think.

There is so much packed into little Georgia : the subtropical Black Sea coast, a productive wine-country, a very intriguing and revered cuisine, ancient churches, Ottoman bathhouses, breakaway republics, mountain fortresses, and alpine hiking. One of my favorite adventures in Georgia was a trip to Svaneti, a mountainous region inhabited by the Svans, known for its stone towers. I haven’t been to Georgia since 2007, but my travels there were some of my most memorable and adventurous.

Taiwan has got a great standard of living, some of the world’s best food , easy and comfortable transportation, a rich culture, fun outdoor activities, safe cities, and very helpful and friendly residents. When you’ve got your fill of urban adventure in Taipei, head to the east coast for hiking in the mountains, soaking in hot springs, cycling through rice paddies, tasting tea, and renting a scooter for more fun. A friend invited me to stay with him in Tainan and I explored the cultural side of Taiwan, visiting lots of temples in this historic capital.

The United States

While it seems funny to list my home country after years of living and traveling outside of the USA, the diversity of geography in the world’s fourth-biggest country is staggering. I’m never a person to think “mine is best” but after traveling the world for two decades, one of my favorite places is the destination of one of my earliest vacations: the American West. The high-elevation Colorado Plateau is home to numerous National Parks, unbelievable geological land formations, dinosaur graveyards, outstanding outdoor sports, Native American cultures, and so much more. Additionally, the old-growth forests of California, Oregon, and Washington State are among the most magical places on the earth. When you’re alone, looking up in a Redwood grove, you’ll understand.

If you forced me to narrow it down to one country to call my favorite, I’d have to choose India . The diversity of this sub-continent is astonishing. You can go from crossing deserts by camel to meditating in yoga ashrams in the foothills of the Himalaya to birdwatching from boats in the backwaters of tropical Kerala. India has 122 major languages and more than 2,000 ethnic groups ! Wherever you go in India there is always something interesting to experience – and that’s why I never tire of this fascinating country. I will have never visited India enough times.

As you can see, I have a lot of favorites. This is why the question is so difficult to answer. When I travel, I look for things to love about the place – its people, history, food, or landscape. There have been very few places I’ve left thinking that I’ve never wanted to return. Here are some additional favorites that didn’t make the first cut.

Honorable Mention:

Uzbekistan – I lived in Uzbekistan for two years and crisscrossed the country countless times. Silk Road cities, good food, and the most open and hospitable people on the planet.

Nepal – The soaring Himalaya, the magnificent Himalaya, the extraordinary Himalaya. These mountains make me cry tears of joy.

Bangladesh – I think it was a week before I saw another foreigner in Bangladesh . Bangladeshis are the most friendly and enthusiastic about meeting outsiders. This trip has remained close to my heart – from tea country to the Sundarbans Mangrove forest.

Egypt – I have great memories of adventures in Egypt in 2007. Superb diving in the Red Sea, chaotic urban adventures in Cairo and Alexandria, far-out oases, and mind-blowing archeology.

Mongolia – The wide-open landscapes you’ve only dreamed about! Real living nomadic cultures, ancient Buddhist traditions, dinosaur bones, and an autumn golden eagle festival in Western Mongolia .

Italy – If you want the best of the best in Europe, it’s no contest. Italy is packed with world-class art and architecture, an incredible food culture, stunning medieval towns, ruins of ancient civilizations, and passionate Italians.

Tunisia – Old school backpacking adventures , incredible archeology, some really friendly people, and super-cheap prices.

Israel and the Palestinian Territories – Fascinating religious history, intriguing current events, and some of the tastiest food in the Middle East.

Mexico – A tremendous diversity of landscapes and cultures are packed into Mexico. And the food is world-renowned.

Colombia – Soaring mountains, two coastlines, coffee country, Amazon jungle, colonial villages, and the warmest people in South America. What more could you want?

China – Get lost on Planet China. The largest population on earth is home to hundreds of ethnic minorities, spectacular landscapes, and towns that rarely, if ever, see foreigners.

Bosnia & Herzegovina – East meets west in Europe. B & H is steeped in Ottoman history and Sarajevo and Mostar are two places you’ll never forget.

Bhutan – If you wanted to create a serene and peaceful sanctuary to be a Buddhist monk, don’t bother. It already exists. Welcome to Bhutan, last great Himalayan kingdom .

Poland – Although Poland suffered greatly in a World War tug of war between Germany and Russia, there are lovely historic cities here with great architecture. And my Slavic soul feels at home in Poland.

Switzerland – Besides the obvious – MOUNTAINS – Switzerland is the intersection of Romantic and Germanic Europe – making Switzerland a cultural and natural highlight of Europe.

Turkey – I spent about four weeks traveling around Turkey and there was still plenty more to see. Most travelers miss Eastern Turkey. Fascinating culture and people that take food very seriously.

Myanmar – Super friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and Bagan. You may not like the government, but you’ll love everything else about Myanmar. Experience the best of Myanmar on my good friend’s Un-Tour to Myanmar .

The United Kingdom – After traveling in Asia and Europe so much I appreciate being able to connect with people in the UK with the same mother tongue.

Future Favorite Countries – Places I haven’t been to yet

I’m sure there are plenty of future favorite countries out there that I just don’t know yet. The way travelers talk about some countries make me want to drop what I’m doing and book a ticket. High on my list are Iran, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Morocco, Uganda, Lesoto, Rwanda, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. I could include many more on this list.

My Favourite Countries After Eight Years of Travel

Since starting travelling the question I’ve been asked more than any other is which country has been my favourite. I’ll often smile and groan and compare the countries I visit to having children.

“I couldn’t possibly choose one over the other!”

This is mostly a lie.

While I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one country, I’ve put a list together of my absolute favourite places I’ve visited over the past two years, listed in alphabetical order.

Travelling through Cambodia was hard. I wasn’t prepared for the profound, emotional toll as I attempted to come to terms with the country’s tragic past. Visits to the Killing Fields and S-21, places I still haven’t been able to write about, were shocking and upsetting and hard to endure. And though my personal tales of woe can obviously not compare, in Cambodia had some of my worst travel luck to date. Over the space of a month I was given the wrong visa, I got food poisoning, I was attacked by jellyfish, I sprained my ankle and couldn’t walk, I fell over and cut up my knee so bad that it became infected, I had a fish swim into my bikini, I was covered in itchy, infected sand fly bites and I spilled a margarita over my brand new laptop.

And yet, I was devastated to leave Cambodia and despite the mental and physical challenges I had faced, it ended up being one of my favourite countries. I think that says a lot about how amazing it is.

The magnificence of the temples of Angkor — dragging myself out of bed for sunrise over Angkor Wat, hiking up a mountain to watch the sunset, climbing up, around, over and through jungle-laden ruins — was one of my biggest highlights. The incredible beaches and islands are some of my favourites in Southeast Asia, even with the sandflies and jellyfish . And then the charming towns of Kampot and Kep, perfect places to relax, recover and explore by scooter.

As much as I love Thailand, I can definitely see myself settling down in Cambodia in the future…

Morocco was a challenging country to travel through but it was also one of the most rewarding.

I actually cut short my time in the country because I was drained from the constant hassle and aggravation, but I still managed to have some of my very best travel experiences while I was there.

There was my first morning in Marrakech — and my absolute delight as I whispered over and over to myself “I’m in Africa!” — taking a tour through the medina and realising that Marrakech was unlike any place I’d ever visited before. It was large, crowded, noisy, polluted, chaotic and intense, it was everything I would usually despise in a city but in Marrakech it just worked. I adored it.

It wasn’t just Marrakech, it was camping in the Sahara Desert, my favourite experience to date. It was following in the footsteps of my favourite musicians in the hippie beach town of Essaouira, and it was falling in love with the peaceful, powder blue town of Chefchaouen.

Morocco definitely wasn’t easy and when I booked my tickets out of the country I swore I’d never return — but since leaving my love for the country has slowly grown until I find myself filled with an overwhelming desire to return.

New Zealand

While I was making a list of everything I wanted to see over my two months in New Zealand, I knew that I was going to enjoy my time there, but I wasn’t sure whether I’d fall in love with the country. You’ll notice that my favourite countries have a strong Asian focus as, while I always enjoy my time in Western countries, they don’t grab me quite as hard as Asia does. I love Asia because it’s different to “home”, because it overwhelms my senses.

Travelling through New Zealand felt a lot like travelling through England, that is, if England had breathtaking scenery and atrocious internet.

New Zealand made it into my favourite countries because of the ridiculously diverse landscapes I experienced while I was there. I sunbathed on black sand beaches and white sand beaches, I saw wild sea lions and penguins — and even the elusive kiwi. I hiked over an active volcano and across a glacier. I bathed in hot springs, trekked through rainforests, sailed through fiords and witnessed crazy geothermal activity. And. So. Much. More.

How could I not fall in love with a country that has so much to offer?

The Philippines

I’d never really planned to visit The Philippines.

I was in Hong Kong and planning on heading to China for a second time in a few days, but given how miserable my first visit to the country was, I was looking for any excuse not to go. After having a quick browse of flights leaving Hong Kong and discovering that I could fly to The Philippines for just $30, my plans to give China a second chance were quickly shelved in favour of some beach time.

All it took was a quick search online for “the best beach in The Philippines”, a Google Image search of “White Beach, Boracay”, and my flights were booked and I was off to experience one of my favourite places to date.

I’ve always assumed I wasn’t really much of a party person. I mean, I’m a Physicist! Throughout University, you were always much more likely to find me studying in a library than out clubbing or drinking. Boracay changed all of that and to this date I’ve never had such a fun week. I’d spend my days sunbathing on an incredible beach and exploring the island by ATV and I’d spend my evenings drinking and dancing and partying and swimming under the stars. I could have spent months there.

My time in The Philippines wasn’t just about Boracay — there was Bohol too, complete with an amazing tarsier sanctuary and the chocolate hills — almost 2000 grass-covered limestone hills, stretching out in all directions. Palawan, too. While Coron Town was nothing special, the boat trip I took to the neighbouring islands showed me just how ridiculously beautiful The Philippines can be.

Slovenia was the very first country I fell deeply in love with — and it was only the second country I visited! I arrived in Ljubljana, tired, sweaty and lost once again (for 18 months I stubbornly refused to carry a phone, resorting instead to hand-drawing indecipherable maps in my notepad).

I was fed up and frustrated when I stumbled onto Prešeren Square, the main square in Ljubljana for the first time. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the gorgeous pink buildings. A musician sat on a nearby bench, singing one of my favourite Bob Dylan songs. A few moments later, a woman approached him and asked if she could join in and they began singing in unison.

Beautiful moments like these occurred on a daily basis throughout my stay in Slovenia, and the longer I stay the more my love grows for this wonderful country.

I even chose to spend my birthday in Slovenia last year!

Taiwan is the friendliest country I’ve ever travelled through.

So many people imagine Taiwan to be an industrious, factory-filled island, however the Taiwan I experienced couldn’t have been further from this vision. Taiwan was my very first Asian country and it was the first place I visited where I truly felt like I was somewhere foreign. I arrived at midnight and spent my first hour gaping in awe as I experienced sensory overload for the very first time. Every time I stepped outside I was faced with a maze of neon lights and horns, wafting fragrances of foreign and unknown spices and the contrasting juxtaposition of crowds and courtesy.

The friendly locals is what I’ll remember the most from Taiwan. When I wanted to visit Sun Moon Lake but couldn’t find a way to get there, a girl I met, and her mother , took time off work just so that they could drive me there and show me around — and they insisted on paying for everything! When I was lost in Taichung and couldn’t find my hostel, a girl I met on the street took me to her apartment, Googled the hostel name, drew me a map and wrote out the characters in Mandarin so that I could take a taxi or bus if I couldn’t find my way. When I was lost in Kaohsiung (are you sensing a theme…?), a girl I met accompanied me to the temple I was trying to find, even though doing so made her late for work. When I had nothing to do in Hualien one night, the hostel owner called up someone to cover his shift and took me to a Taiwanese dance performance.

As well as the friendly locals, Taiwan is also incredibly beautiful. There’s Sun Moon Lake, there’s the tropical beaches and islands of the south, and there’s Taroko Gorge, one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited.

Oh, and did I mention that Taipei has dozens of ridiculously fun themed restaurants?

Nowhere in the world feels more like home for me than Thailand.

I’ve spent eight of my 24 months of travel in Thailand, alternating between cheap living and delicious food in Chiang Mai and stunning scenery and a laid-back vibe in the islands of the south.

Highlights from my time include riding on the back of a scooter around lesser-known parts of Northern Thailand, drinking far too many buckets on Koh Chang, celebrating Songkran and being awed by the Yi Peng lantern festival. I found a deserted paradise island on Koh Yao Noi, incredible scenery on Koh Phi Phi and one of the best beaches of my life in Koh Lipe.

I have so many memories from this incredible country and I wouldn’t be surprised if I find myself paying it a visit at least once a year…

Vietnam quickly became one of my favourite countries after my amazing scooter trip through the Mekong Delta. For ten days I sat on the back of a scooter as we rode through endless rice paddies, over nerve-wrackingly unstable bridges and around a maze of waterways. We visited wet markets, I ate the best food of my life, we took dozens of water ferries and didn’t see another Westerner for 7 days. You know you’re really off the beaten track when all the kids you pass in the street stare at you in a mixture of confusion and awe.

I haven’t explored as much of Vietnam as I’d have liked to — the only time I’ve been north of Saigon was a four day trip to Hoi An but every place I’ve visited has been nothing short of incredible.

In Saigon, I fell in love with the crazy, chaotic streets and the incredible food. I struggle with food in Southeast Asia, but in Saigon I loved that I could order absolutely anything from the menu and know that it would be delicious. And so, I ate everything. Hoi An was another favourite place of mine — shopping for gorgeous tailor-made dresses, falling in love with the colourful lantern-filled old town and relaxing one on of the prettiest beaches I’ve been to.

I have so much more to see but I’ve loved every place I’ve visited so far.

TAIWAN! Yes! A country that seems to get so little love. It’s definitely one of my favorite places I’ve ever been and like you said, so different from you’d expect. Cambodia and Vietnam were my two favorite Southeast Asian countries. I’m glad to see them on this list, especially Vietnam because it seems so polarizing and it gets a lot of crap.

I’m tentatively planning a trip to Morocco for my winter holidays, so I will be combing through your posts for advice :)

I’m secretly a tiny bit happy it doesn’t get as much coverage as other places in Asia — I wouldn’t want it getting overrun with millions of tourists :-). Agree, I don’t know why so many people don’t like Vietnam — it’s such a fantastic country!

Hey, I’m just wandering what camera you used and what lens(es) you equipped. I’m currently saving up for the Sony A7 but if there’s a cheaper alternative I’d be more than happy to buy it .

I love, love, love this post! Isn’t it amazing how we sometimes end up in places that we never intended to visit (like The Philippines) and end up falling madly in love with the place? I felt the same way about Belize. Belize took my breath away and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Every post I read about your adventures in SE Asia gets me more and more stoked to go. I’ve heard a lot about Cambodia’s history, and I’ve heard of the beauty the country offers as well, and I’m eager to learn about it all for myself.

New Zealand Internet is some of the worst in the world huh? That is where I originally started blogging, and I nearly could never upload photos! And barely ever free wifi lol. But what amazing scenery though! I guess it’s really made for fantasy and hobbits and not Internet :P

Totally agree with your comment on Cambodia – it’s the perfect mix of history, culture, friendly locals and paradise…all with a super cheap price tag!

New Zealand my impressions were the same – it caught me off guard with how incredibly beautiful and contrasting it is.

Switzerland is much the same in that respect – it’s gorgeous…shame about the cost of it though!

I so agree with you on Taiwan, Vietnam and Cambodia. The first two especially because I found their natural landscapes stunning. You have definitely sparked my interest in Slovenia though! I hope to get to Eastern Europe sometimes this year….it sounds so unique and fascinating.

You definitely should try and get there. Eastern Europe is my second favourite region of the world after Southeast Asia :-)

What a fantastic list. We’ve been to some but not all on your list. We’re curious – did you make it over to Slovakia as well and if so, did you notice large differences? We are hoping to do an Eastern Europe trip soon. We also get that “what’s your favorite country” question and we usually answer that “every country has something wonderful about it”, but truthfully, I think my answer might be “Norway and Laos”, both for their natural beauty. Oh, and your pictures look amazing!

I did make it to Slovakia and… I didn’t like it all that much. I mean it was… okay… but kind of dull. Having said that, I did only visit Bratislava so I can’t really judge a country just by its capital. However, it was nothing like Slovenia!

What beautiful places, pretty sure most of them are on my “to visit” bucket list. It is really difficult to narrow down the countries you love, especially when they are so different and offer such diverse experiences. I think if I had to pick three, they would be Bosnia, Croatia, and Costa Rica. I have really enjoyed the many places I have visited, but there was something extra special about these three that made them feel like “home”.

We’ve been traveling for nearly 12 months now, solely throughout Asia at this point, and now that we’ve been to enough countries, I definitely have been able to pick out favorites, as these are the countries that still call to me long after I have left. It’s actually pretty cool that many of my favorite Asian countries are ones that are yours too, namely: The Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. (Thailand is a close 4th, but if I could only pick three, those are the ones it would have to be!)

The Philippines was the first country on our trip that I really fell in love with—we were only supposed to stay 3 weeks and wound up extending our visas so we could stay for a full 2 months. And somewhat eerily, we had never planned to visit the country at all and only did so because we were desperate to escape China and it was the cheapest international destination available to us that we hadn’t already visited! So funny to see how our stories with it overlap so much, though I’m not at all surprised to hear you loved it so much, since I feel like to visit that country is to love it.

The only country on your list that we have visited and would put near the bottom of our experiences would be Cambodia. I know most people lovet hat country, but although we had some amazing times there, there was also a lot there that we did not like very much at all. I’m glad I visited and I know that I learned and grew a lot during my month there, but it’s one of those places that I can’t ever see going back to.

Crazy how identical our paths have been so far. I’ve been loving your coverage of Taiwan, by the way, I forward all of your posts to Dave to convince him to visit with me! ;-)

Hmm, I’m tempted by Taiwan now. I’d never considered going there before because, like you said, I thought he would be an industrial city, so it’s interesting to hear that there’s so much more to it.

Wow, amazing post and photography – views – just breathtaking. My favorite countries would be Georgia and Armenia in Caucasus – I was shocked by their beauty. Literally no one knows about this piece of land – I still haven’t come across any blogger who would have visited this forgotten piece of land. And it’s worth it :) It’s like discovering a hidden treasure because you don’t know what to except at all! Maybe you should visit Caucasus some day ;) Good luck in your travels!!

A great post! I can only wish to visit so many countries – and these are only your favourite ones. I have been to a few myself… I also really like Morocco and Slovenia a lot. I did however find Marrakech to be not all that genuine and spoiled with a horde of tourists. I found Fes much more genuine and it easily takes the prize for my favourite Moroccan big city.

A couple things made me really happy in here. The first is that I’m moving to Taiwan in less than a week teaching math for a year. The two things I keep hearing are nicest people and best food. I can deal with pretty much anything else once those two are covered.

The second is your story of Ljubljana is almost identical to mine. I had been traveling way too hard and way too fast and decided to go be quiet in Ljubljana for a couple days. I walked in to the main square and it sounded like Bob Dylan and his band were playing. It turns out it was a guy playing guitar, harmonica AND drums. He had a drum strapped to his back and was playing it with cables (picture in the link below). It was the beginning of the most relaxing couple days of my summer with amazing food, great music, lots of sleep, and many relaxing walks. I can’t wait to get back and see more of the country.

How exciting that you’ll be moving to Taiwan! I have no doubt that you’ll end up loving it as much as I do.

I’m lucky to not have been in a country I didn’t like. Some I liked more, but every country I have taken something from :)

Every time I’ve struggled in a country and felt like I hated it, I often find that all I need to do is take a break for a few days and I’ll realise I was just being pathetic ;-)

I love that, even if you had some bad experiences, you can still look back on all the good of a country. It’s a perfect attitude for a traveller ;)

Thank you for including my adopted home: Taiwan. Amanda got it right… It doesn’t get nearly enough love. It’s just off the beaten track, not really that popular among backpackers, and it bloody should be! Exciting cities, beautiful natural scenery are remarkably close. I live a ten minute walk from Taipei 101 in one direction, and a six-hour hike though the greenest mountains you’ve ever seen five minutes the other way. Sure it’s cramped, busy, and requires superhuman perception to navigate the streets. Asia! But I will definitely vouch for the locals. At least 99% of them are the most awesome people I’ve ever met anywhere. And they’ll usually tell of the other 1% on your behalf!

Lauren, thanks for the inspiration on places to visit elsewhere in the world. I keep seeing Slovenia popping up on various travel sites. I’m pretty enamoured with my own back yard (Spitting distance to the Rockies on one side and surrounded by farmland and badlands on the other) but I absolutely love Norway’s north. We have family friends that live close to Lofoten Islands, I could live up there.

Excuse the length of this..Came across this blog by accident and glad I did. Would love a knowledgeable travelers opinion on my itinerary. I am going to Chaing Mai for 4 months. Then after that train from CM to Bangkok & Siem Reap, boat to Phonm Penh, bus to Siagon, train to Hanoi, & if possible quick trip to Nanning China and back to Hanoi. Hanoi to Vinh Vietnam & from there bus thru Laos to Vientiane. Bus across border and train back to Bangkok. On to Singapore next via train from Bangkok. Plane to Jakarata, only to say I crossed Equator.. Fly from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur and from there train jungle trip to Phi Phi Islands.. Phi Phi to Pattaya area.

Staying approx. 2 days each locale except Phi Phi Islands area. Ending with 1 month in Pattaya area.

I’ll be honest with you and say that your itinerary sounds like absolute hell to me. Not because of the places you’re visiting but because of the sheer amount of places you’re trying to cram into such a short space of time. I feel exhausted just reading about it!

Does your itinerary take into account travel time (often 12-24 hours between the places you mentioned)? Even if it does, 2 days in each place is nowhere near enough time to see anything or to even start getting to know a place, especially when you’ll probably need a day to recover from all the overland travel. I’ve had a few stints of fast-paced travel (though not as fast as you’re planning to move) and after the first few places I hated everything and all I wanted to stop moving. To be honest, it sounds to me like you’re traveling to cross off a load of countries and not because you actually want to explore them.

I think your plan would be great if you were spending a minimum of 4 or 5 days in each place. If it was me, I’d choose two countries, maybe Cambodia and Vietnam, and explore them in much more depth than you would with your original itinerary. But then, I’m a proponent of slow travel and actually getting to know a country :-).

I’d recommend getting in touch with Dani and Jess at and asking them for advice on your itinerary. They offer an excellent itinerary planning service that I think would help you out.

My favourite country is New Zealand, I’m currently planning a trip back there if I can scrounge up the money… Best vacation ever, the 6 weeks I spent there in 2010. We were meant to stay four weeks, but the Icelandic ash cloud stranded us there for two more (what a shame!) ;-) I’ve never been to the Philippines though, thanks for the tip!

New Zealand is fantastic but, like you say, it’s not cheap! I’m sure I’ll be returning in the future — I can’t believe I managed to spend two months there and still feel like I saw hardly anything.

Thank you, Laly! In Thailand, I mostly stay in guesthouses or rent apartments. I paid around $500 a month for an apartment with swimming pool, gym, cleaner, A/C… It can be pretty cheap :-)

I came to Thailand for a year to teach English. 12 years later, I still live here :) – although I’m leaving next month for a few months in the US and then possibly on to Spain for a while but Thailand will always be ‘home’ to me and I’ll still keep my apartment here.

Haven’t been to New Zealand yet, but have never heard a bad thing about it and, as for Cambodia, I agree. An amazing place, lovely people who are also incredibly strong, considering what most of them have lived and are still living through.

Asia to most is beautiful and very cheap destination.rarely do i see travel blogs on the amount of air pollution and water pollution.My son went to Bali and ended up with Barli belli ,because he accidently swollowed ,swimming pool water. How ever when it comes down to Australia,because it is quite expensive ,people love giving Australia a hard bashing.Australia has amazing landscapes just like anywhere else.Sadly most people only visit the busy East coast of Queensland and Byron Bay NSW and forget the West coast of Australia ,which is wild and spectacular.

I haven’t written about air and water pollution simply because it doesn’t bother me/I haven’t noticed it. I grew up in London, where the air pollution is so much worse than many places I’ve visited in Asia :-) I’ve never had a problem with any swimming pools making me sick either.

Australia isn’t one of my favourite countries for many reasons, but price isn’t one of them. If that was the case, New Zealand wouldn’t be one of my favourites, and it’s in my top three :-) Sorry — I know you keep commenting on my Oceania posts to sing the praises of Australia, but it’s just not my kind of place and that’s unlikely to change.

Oh, I’m really happy when Vietnam is one of your favourite countries. Hope that you will come back our country again and again. It is more amazing and challenging if you drive scooter (on the back of that) to Dalat, or some provinces in Northwest of Vietnam.

Living in Australia and having so much Asian culture here I don’t find Asia as intriguing as yourself as its on our doorstep and easy to travel too regularly. It does have beautiful beaches and nature though I just find the historical aspect not as mesmerising as Europe and find it a little dirilict and third world in parts. I too did love Slovenia but the Postojna Caves and Lake Bled together with tbe beautiful coastal town of Piran were my highlights. My favourite country though to date is Croatia, the towns of Rovinj, Plitvice Lakes and e gorgeous waterfall town of Rastoke, Town of Sibenik and Krka Falls, islands Murter, Losinj, Vis, Hvar, town of Pucisca , Makarska Riviera, Split, Dubrovnik, Motovun can’t be beat for me. So much diversity in a small area you could spend months there. Do yourself a favour and google some of these places you havnt visited and you’ll be booking another trip. I too love Eastern Europe from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro. A true hidden treasure of the world

Talk About Your Favorite Country: IELTS Speaking (Cue Card With Example Answer)

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you might be asked to talk about your favorite country. The cue card will probably read: “Describe your favorite country.” And it will give you some suggestions on what to say.

Let’s look at how to answer this question for a band-seven score. Below, you can also read a good example answer ( go straight to the answer here ).

Which Country to Choose

For a question like this, it’s best to talk about a country you’ve already been to. This is because you can quickly remember your time there and talk about that.

However, you might want to talk about a country that you haven’t been to, but would like to visit. Or you could choose a country you love because of its movies, art, culture, weather, or food.

Of course, you can also talk about your own country, which is probably the simplest option of all.

In part two of IELTS Speaking, always choose the option that’s easiest to talk about.

What You Can Say

When you’ve chosen a country, here are some things you can talk about:

The culture
The weather
What this country is famous for
Why it’s a perfect place for vacation
Sights to see there
Things to do there
Why it’s the perfect place to live
Cost of living
Quality of life
Your experience when you visited that country
Some interesting experiences you had there
Why you want to visit that country
How often you go there
How long you’ve lived there
Anything else that comes to mind

Tell a Story

In part two, you should always try to tell a short story. With a simple story, you can:

Keep speaking easily for 30 seconds or more
Show that you can use good past tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect…)

It’s easy to tell a story about a country because you can simply remember when you visited that country and say what you did there. So before your IELTS test, prepare a few stories about countries you’ve visited.

You can then use these stories for lots of different questions. For example, you can use your country story for questions about vacations, adventures, travel, interesting experiences, food, family, friends, and more.

Focus on Vocabulary

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you can get a band-7 score by:

Talking for two minutes without hesitation
Using some interesting, less common vocabulary
Not making too many mistakes

One great way to prepare interesting vocabulary is to memorize word groups .

A word group is a collection of interesting words, phrases, and idioms that describe one aspect of a place, person, activity, or thing.

For example, you might prepare a ‘busy place’ word group that includes words like: ‘bustling, hectic, crowded, industrious, fast pace of life, as busy as a bee…’ and more.

You can then use this same ‘busy place’ word group to answer many different questions about places. For example:

Describe your favorite city
Describe your hometown
Describe a place you like to visit
Describe a vacation you went on
Describe a city you’d like to live in
And many more part-two questions

So for this ‘favorite country’ question, it’s a good idea to prepare a word group now that could describe a country you like.

In the example answer below, you’ll see a ‘natural place’ word group in use.

Favorite Country Cue Card

Describe your favorite country.

You should say:

What this country it is
If you’ve visited this country before
What this country is known for

And say why this is your favorite country.

I’m going to talk about Switzerland, which is a stunningly beautiful country in the center of Europe. I love Switzerland because it has an abundance of natural beauty . Most of the country is covered by mountainous terrain and there’s so much magnificent scenery with endless spectacular views to enjoy. The whole country is full of impressive mountains and glistening lakes .

I’ve only visited Switzerland once in my life, but I will always remember that vacation. I went on a camping trip there with my family about seven years ago. I remember driving through the picturesque mountains, soaking up the incredible views . It was a real escape into the great outdoors .

We stayed at many campsites beside the quiet waters of beautiful lakes. It was wonderful to wake up in the morning to the sound of birdsong . I recall we stayed in one idyllic natural spot for many days, right next to the water. I remember sitting outside our tent in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea and looking at a breathtaking view of a massive snowcapped mountain .

We went for many hikes through forests and meadows , enjoying the fresh air, scents of the forest, and beautiful fields of wildflowers . There were many cows with little bells around their necks and we could always hear the bells ringing gently.

I think Switzerland is a fantastic place to live because it’s very safe there. To be honest, Switzerland is a little expensive and the food isn’t the best food in Europe. But when you’re there, it’s really easy to drive to neighboring countries like Italy, France, or Germany because Switzerland is right in the middle of Europe and it’s a very small country. So that’s another reason why I like it.
