How to Write the Perfect Process Analysis Essay (With a Sample Essay)

Tonya Thompson

A process analysis essay is a kind of expository essay that explains the process or actions someone needs to take to complete a task. You can think of it like a recipe, stating all of the necessary ingredients and steps, allowing the reader to follow along in logical order.

A process analysis essay can be written about a wide scope of topics, from highly technical processes to cleaning and organizing your closet. Writing a process analysis essay forces you to slow down and consider every tool and step involved in completing a task, and then explain what's needed in logical order for your reader to do the same.

Writing a process analysis essay forces you to slow down and consider every tool and step involved in completing a task, and then explain what's needed in logical order.

Format of a process analysis essay

For this type of essay assignment, you will not be following the traditional five-paragraph essay outline. There is still an introduction and body to your essay, but your conclusion is more like the "analysis" part and the essay will end when you've completed explaining the steps involved in a process. Below, we'll break down exactly what should be included in each of these parts. Also keep in mind that you can still create an outline before beginning writing your process analysis essay, although it might look more like a list of bullet points rather than a traditional five-paragraph essay outline.

Introduction

The introduction to your process analysis essay will include information about the process you are analyzing and why it is important. This will likely be the shortest part of your essay. If there is a unique history to the process you'll be analyzing, the introduction is where you might mention that. You basically want to use this paragraph as a brief introduction to your reader of 1) what process you'll be analyzing and 2) how or why that process might be useful information to know.

The body of your process analysis essay will mention any prerequisites, materials, or instruments needed to complete the process. It should also mention any risks or warnings involved that are relevant to the process. It's important to include everything that the reader will need to complete the process, and even extra tools that might help the process go smoother but are not necessary. For example, in the sample process analysis essay provided below on how to make apple butter, I included a spoon to stir the butter as part of the list of tools that will be needed. Additionally, I mentioned that a food processor will make the apple butter cook better and have a more butter-like consistency, but it's not necessary to have as a tool to cook apple butter.

Following these sections, you'll write the actual process in sequential order required to complete the task. Make sure you include transitional words within and between paragraphs, as these are required to show the sequence of the process in logical order. Your analysis will likely be across several paragraphs, so make sure each paragraph describes a separate part of the process to avoid confusion for your reader.

Sample process analysis essay

To show you how a process analysis essay might look, we've provided a sample essay that includes the separate sections discussed above. Notice that the introduction paragraph is short, providing basic information about the process that will be discussed, while the remaining paragraphs are longer and more detailed.

Below is a sample process analysis essay explaining how to make apple butter

Sample essay

Apple butter is similar to apple sauce but is different in that it is highly concentrated and used more often as a butter-like topping on bread or crackers. It's cooked long and slow, allowing the sugar in the apples to caramelize and turn it a deep brown color.

To make apple butter, you will need a slow cooker, food processor, cutting board, peeling knife, large spoon, apples, sugar, and spices for the desired flavoring (usually cinnamon and nutmeg). You might also want to use an apple slicer, which cuts down on the preparation time. Note that when you begin cooking your apple butter, the more minced the peeled apples are, the smoother the final product will be. If you want your apple butter to have a true butter-like consistency, mince the apples well in the food processor before cooking.

Now, let's look at the process of cooking apple butter. To begin, prepare a large, clean space for cutting and processing the apples. Five to six cups of fresh apples will likely only result in a few cups (at most) of apple butter, so depending on how much butter you want to make, you could be peeling and preparing apples for several hours. Each apple will need to be sliced, peeled, and minced in a food processor for maximum butter-like consistency.

Next, add the minced apples to a slow cooker and place the slow cooker on "high". You will notice that the top of the mixture is watery, once the larger pieces settle. Add sugar and spices until you reach the taste you want for the apple butter. Keep in mind that apples vary in sweetness, depending on what type of apple you are using, and sugar can be added slowly throughout the cooking process. Be careful not to add too much sugar at first, as the butter will get sweeter as the apples cook down. In fact, you might even choose to not at sugar at all at this stage of the cooking process, especially if you want a final product that is not too sweet. The spices can also be added as the apple butter cooks or not at all (if that's your preference). Be sure to stir every 10-15 minutes during the first hour as the apple butter is cooking on high and let it cook uncovered.

After one hour of cooking on high, turn the slow cooker to low and cover it. Depending on the type of apple you have used, it should cook for 8-10 hours, until there is no water left at the top and around the sides of the slow cooker. During this slow cooking time, stir occasionally (once per hour should be fine). This is also when the apple butter makes your kitchen smell amazing!

Finally, when the apple butter has reached the consistency and taste you want, remove it from the slow cooker. If you choose to can the apple butter, you can do that immediately or keep the apple butter in the refrigerator until you are able to can it.

How to Write a Process Essay on Food

How to Write a Process Essay About Cupcakes

How to Write a Process Essay About Cupcakes

A process essay on food is either an essay that tells you how to make a recipe or one that tells you how a food product is made. Both essays are written in the form of step-by-step instructions. As you research and write your essay, you'll likely learn a lot, which can benefit you as the author, as baking brownies from scratch is time-consuming, but the final product is well worth the wait. It is important to keep your directions or process steps as simple as possible. If the process is a recipe, the article should teach the reader how to make it. If the process is how a certain food product was made, like name-brand factory products, the reader should understand all the steps that went into creating that food product.

Writing About How Food is Made

Find out everything there is to know about making the food product about which you are writing. Take notes, use legitimate sources and if possible, interview someone directly involved in the production of the food product. Consider all of the ingredients, staff and machinery necessary to make the food you are learning about. You may be writing about how a factory mass produces their brand of food, such as candy bars or toaster pastries, or how a private bakery is run. Ask questions appropriate to your topic.

Before you begin writing, first outline your essay. This will help plan everything you want to write about. Order everything in sequential order, so the reader will clearly understand how the food product is made. Next, write the body of your essay. Each paragraph should be one point or one step in the process to make the food product. Make sure the reader knows everything involved in the process you are writing about.

Finally, write the introduction and conclusion of your essay. It is best to write the introduction after the body, so you understand what you are introducing. An introduction should prepare a reader for your article and possibly give them some background information on the process. The conclusion should summarize all of your main points. Last but not least, go back over your essay and correct any grammatical or spelling errors.

Writing Recipes

Learn everything you can about the recipe you are writing about. Do some research and learn if there are different ways to make the food in the recipe. Make sure you are educated in the cooking methods required in the recipe. It's also important to cook or prepare the recipe yourself. When you have followed the steps you learned, you will understand how best to teach those steps to others, and you might pick up some new cooking skills as well.

Next, write down all of the steps to prepare the recipe. Be sure to write the recipe in chronological order. For example, for recipes that require baking, mention preheating the oven first, so it can be at the proper temperature when it's time to place your dish in the oven. Include a list of necessary ingredients.

Then, you'll be able to write an introduction to the essay. This is best done after you have written the steps, so you know exactly what you are introducing. Try to include background information on the recipe in question.

Finally, write a conclusion to the essay. In this section include any variations to the recipe. If certain ingredients can be exchanged for others, let the reader know. Also, don't forget to proofread your essay at least one more time for spelling and grammatical errors, and fix if necessary.

10.5 Process Analysis

Learning objectives.

  • Determine the purpose and structure of the process analysis essay.
  • Understand how to write a process analysis essay.

The Purpose of Process Analysis in Writing

The purpose of a process analysis essay is to explain how to do something or how something works. In either case, the formula for a process analysis essay remains the same. The process is articulated into clear, definitive steps.

Almost everything we do involves following a step-by-step process. From riding a bike as children to learning various jobs as adults, we initially needed instructions to effectively execute the task. Likewise, we have likely had to instruct others, so we know how important good directions are—and how frustrating it is when they are poorly put together.

Writing at Work

The next time you have to explain a process to someone at work, be mindful of how clearly you articulate each step. Strong communication skills are critical for workplace satisfaction and advancement. Effective process analysis plays a critical role in developing that skill set.

On a separate sheet of paper, make a bulleted list of all the steps that you feel would be required to clearly illustrate three of the following four processes:

  • Tying a shoelace
  • Parallel parking
  • Planning a successful first date
  • Being an effective communicator

The Structure of a Process Analysis Essay

The process analysis essay opens with a discussion of the process and a thesis statement that states the goal of the process.

The organization of a process analysis essay typically follows chronological order. The steps of the process are conveyed in the order in which they usually occur. Body paragraphs will be constructed based on these steps. If a particular step is complicated and needs a lot of explaining, then it will likely take up a paragraph on its own. But if a series of simple steps is easier to understand, then the steps can be grouped into a single paragraph.

The time transition phrases covered in the Narration and Illustration sections are also helpful in organizing process analysis essays (see Table 10.1 “Transition Words and Phrases for Expressing Time” and Table 10.2 “Phrases of Illustration” ). Words such as first , second , third , next , and finally are helpful cues to orient reader and organize the content of essay.

Always have someone else read your process analysis to make sure it makes sense. Once we get too close to a subject, it is difficult to determine how clearly an idea is coming across. Having a friend or coworker read it over will serve as a good way to troubleshoot any confusing spots.

Choose two of the lists you created in Note 10.52 “Exercise 1” and start writing out the processes in paragraph form. Try to construct paragraphs based on the complexity of each step. For complicated steps, dedicate an entire paragraph. If less complicated steps fall in succession, group them into a single paragraph.

Writing a Process Analysis Essay

Choose a topic that is interesting, is relatively complex, and can be explained in a series of steps. As with other rhetorical writing modes, choose a process that you know well so that you can more easily describe the finer details about each step in the process. Your thesis statement should come at the end of your introduction, and it should state the final outcome of the process you are describing.

Body paragraphs are composed of the steps in the process. Each step should be expressed using strong details and clear examples. Use time transition phrases to help organize steps in the process and to orient readers. The conclusion should thoroughly describe the result of the process described in the body paragraphs. See Chapter 15 “Readings: Examples of Essays” to read an example of a process analysis essay.

Choose one of the expanded lists from Note 10.54 “Exercise 2” . Construct a full process analysis essay from the work you have already done. That means adding an engaging introduction, a clear thesis, time transition phrases, body paragraphs, and a solid conclusion.

Key Takeaways

  • A process analysis essay explains how to do something, how something works, or both.
  • The process analysis essay opens with a discussion of the process and a thesis statement that states the outcome of the process.
  • The organization of a process analysis essay typically follows a chronological sequence.
  • Time transition phrases are particularly helpful in process analysis essays to organize steps and orient reader.

Process Analysis: How to Write a Process Analysis Essay

Writing a process analysis essay sounds like a problematic task to do, but in reality, it’s just another writing assignment. In this article, our college essay writing service will explain how to write a process analysis essay, list some process analysis essay topics and give you useful writing tips and examples. But first things first — let’s start with a process analysis definition.

What Is a Process Analysis Essay

Before jumping to the How To section, let’s answer the question of what is process analysis. Process analysis is an essay which explains how something is done, how something occurs, or how something works. In this type of essay, the writer is required to present the steps of the process in sequential order, from first to last. All concepts or terms that might appear uncommon are defined.

For Example: When writing a process analysis essay about becoming a better person, you count and describe some actions — from small to bigger ones — like lifting peoples’ self esteem around you when you were young, to becoming a motivational speaker when you’re older.

Sometimes, your professor will assign you a process analysis topic. And sometimes, you will have to pick a topic by yourself.

You should also read the article on discursive essay format . It will help expand your understanding in writing any type of paper.

Stuck on the Steps of Process Analysis?

Journey through your essay with ease. Our expert guides are ready to help you analyze every step of the way!

Process Analysis Essay Structure

Process essays may be divided into two categories: informative and directive. A directive process analysis gives instructions on how to accomplish a certain goal (for example, how to prepare the best waffles). An informational process analysis essay describes a topic to the reader (for example, how an aircraft engine functions). A process essay may be written in three easy steps:

  • Split the task

The workflow should be broken down into simple, well-defined phases that generally maintain a temporal sequence and have a clear objective. You can better arrange the document with a process paper outline.

  • Make smooth transitions

A process analysis essay remains more engaging when you use transitional terms—the audience benefits from phrases like - therefore, subsequently, afterward, etc.

  • Study the essay thoroughly

Inspect any potential gaps, such as missing ingredients from a recipe, by going through the process essay point by point.

  • Choose a theme that will involve the readers.
  • Focus your topic on a specific thing.
  • Make sure you can explain your topic without pictures. Focus on words.
  • Ensure that the topic is helpful and has practical worth.
  • Your topic must be relevant. If you decided to write about using a pager, we suggest you rethink your idea.

Writing a Process Analysis Essay Step-By-Step

Process analysis essay structure is as follows:

process analysis essay recipe

Let's overview that structure in more details:

  • The introductory part should explain the actual process and why it’s relevant or necessary. Avoid any unnecessary information such as the background, history or origin. If for instance, a recipe needs tomato sauce, the reader should be informed so. In other words, go directly to the issue and provide only the necessary information.
  • The next paragraph should present a list of all the equipment, tools or resources necessary for the particular process. For instance, if some ingredients cannot be found in the locality, explain where you can find it, or them. Potential risks or side effects that are likely to occur in the process should be stated so that the reader remains informed. Furthermore, it is essential to inform the reader about what might go wrong and what can be done to avoid potential mistakes.
  • Then, outline the process in sequential order. If the process requires some steps to be undertaken at particular stages, these should be stated and explained clearly, at relevant points in the sequence. The writer should be very keen to avoid confusion. For processes that appear complicated, the steps should be subdivided accordingly. Additionally, the writer needs to vary their use of transitional words such as “after”, “then”, “next” to make sure the essay does not become repetitive.
  • The final part should present a general review of the whole process so the writer can reinforce the main points succinctly, without details.

Process Analysis Essay Outline

The structure for this type of analysis essay outline is as follows:

Introduction:

  • Introduce your topic and briefly outline what the process will achieve.
  • Demonstrate where this process is relevant or when it is useful.
  • It’s a good idea to offer a real-world example of the outcome of the procedure.
  • The processes should be presented in paragraphs.
  • Perform each step in its section.
  • Appropriate transitions should be employed for each step.
  • Be descriptive in your presentation.

Conclusion:

  • In your conclusion, summarize the procedure. You don’t have to repeat all the individual steps, but you need to reinforce the main points and milestones.
  • Describe the expected result.

Writing Tips

  • Appropriate Use of Language and Vocabulary Making good use of vocabulary and technical terms can often make or break an assignment. This impacts the degree of depth and clarity the reader can get out of it. Thus, if your audience is meant to be doing the procedures while reading, the steps should be simple and to the point.
  • Give the Reader a Sense of Direction When including comments in your essay that are tailored to give a sense of direction, like “once that’s done” or “wait until”, it’s best to do so where relevant. Try to avoid over-complicating the steps, while keeping everything clear and concise.
  • Use Chronological Progression For example, if it’s a cooking recipe, it should always include the steps in sequential order, while also indicating how much of each ingredient to add. Additional information like cooking techniques can be added at the end—to be as detailed as necessary.

According to the process analysis essay definition :

“It is a type of expository essay that aims to describe some actions or process.”

  • Choose a topic idea that involves the reader
  • Find a topic that you have a good understanding of
  • Focus your theme on one particular thing

Note : In the above example, the headings are only mentioned to give you an idea of what the step is about. You don’t actually have to give headings before every paragraph in your essay.

Step 5. Conclude The Essay

In the conclusion , summarize all the steps involved. Inform your audience about the risks or any side effects associated with the process. Discuss the consequences if something goes wrong and how to make it right.

How to Write a Process Analysis Essay Like a PRO

Creating a Step-by-Step Process Analysis Essay

Now, let's break down the process analysis essay structure into distinct sections, each with some unique insights:

process analysis guide

Begin your topic with a compelling introduction that captures the reader's attention. Provide a brief overview of the process you will be explaining. Consider adding a personal anecdote or a surprising fact to make your introduction more engaging. For instance, if your topic is about brewing coffee with a French press, start by describing the aroma of freshly ground beans or the anticipation of that first sip.

Craft a clear thesis statement that outlines the specific steps involved in the process and emphasizes its importance or benefits. For example, if your process analysis essay is about creating a personalized workout routine, your thesis might highlight how tailoring workouts can lead to better adherence and more significant fitness gains.

Dedicate a section to list and explain all the materials or ingredients needed for the process. Include any variations or alternatives, and offer tips on where to find specific items. For a topic on the homemade pizza dough recipe, this could involve discussing the different types of flour and their impact on crust texture.

This is the meat of your essay. Clearly articulate each step in the process. Use a logical progression, and consider incorporating visuals like diagrams or images for complex steps. Highlight potential pitfalls or common mistakes and suggest how to avoid them. In the case of a topic on the job interview process, discuss not just what to ask but also how to read non-verbal cues from candidates.

Share additional insights that can enhance the reader's experience with the process. This could involve shortcuts, time-saving techniques, or creative variations. If you're guiding readers on the topic of designing a mobile app, discuss emerging trends and user interface tricks that can make their app stand out.

Address potential challenges or roadblocks that readers might encounter in a separate process analysis essay paragraph. Provide solutions or alternative approaches to keep the process running smoothly. If your topic is about creating a blog, include a section on common blogging challenges (like writer's block) and how to overcome them.

Summarize the key points of the process without introducing new information. Reinforce the importance of following the steps and achieving the desired outcome. Consider ending with an invitation for readers to share their experiences or ask questions. For instance, if you've guided them through the process of organizing a surprise party, conclude by encouraging them to share their favorite surprises in return.

How to Bake a Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie

Introduction:

Baking chocolate chip cookies is a delightful and rewarding experience that can be enjoyed by novice and experienced bakers alike. While the end result may seem like a simple treat, achieving the perfect balance of gooey texture and rich flavor requires a careful and systematic process. In this process analysis essay, we will explore the step-by-step procedure to bake a batch of irresistible chocolate chip cookies.

Ingredients:

Before diving into the baking process, gather the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Step 1: Preheat the Oven. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that the cookies will bake evenly and achieve the perfect golden-brown color.

Step 2: Cream the Butter and Sugars. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is crucial for creating a soft and chewy texture in the cookies.

Step 3: Add Eggs and Vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract to enhance the overall flavor of the cookies.

Step 4: Combine Dry Ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, ensuring a thorough incorporation.

Step 5: Fold in Chocolate Chips. Gently fold in the chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the cookie dough. This step is where the sweetness and richness of the chocolate chips come into play.

Step 6: Scoop and Bake. Using a cookie scoop or a tablespoon, drop rounded balls of cookie dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Ensure enough space between each cookie to allow for spreading during baking.

Step 7: Bake to Perfection. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Keep a close eye on the cookies to avoid overbaking, as this can result in a dry texture.

Step 8: Cool and Enjoy. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, indulge in the heavenly combination of a crisp outer layer and a soft, gooey center.

Conclusion:

Baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie is a delightful journey that involves precision and attention to detail. By following this step-by-step process, you can create a batch of cookies that will undoubtedly be a hit with friends and family. So, preheat your oven, gather your ingredients, and embark on the delicious adventure of baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

Choose a topic that is interesting, is relatively complex, and can be explained in a series of steps. As with other rhetorical writing modes, choose a process that you know well so that you can more easily describe the finer details about each step in the process. In fact, the process should be one in which you can add relevant personal examples, including tips, tricks, and anecdotes to make it your own. It should not read like a recipe or an instructional manual; it should be personal and engaging. Furthermore, your thesis statement should come at the end of your introduction, and it should state the final outcome of the process you are describing.

Body paragraphs are composed of the steps in the process. Each step should be expressed using strong details and clear examples. Use time transition phrases to help organize steps in the process and to orient readers. The conclusion should thoroughly describe the result of the process described in the body paragraphs.

key takeaways

  • A process analysis essay explains how to do something, how something works, or both.
  • The process analysis essay opens with a discussion of the process and a thesis statement that states the outcome of the process.
  • The organization of a process analysis essay typically follows a chronological sequence.
  • Time transition phrases are particularly helpful in process analysis essays to organize steps and orient reader

5 Steps to Writing a Process Analysis Essay

This type of writing lives up to its name. Process analysis essay explains how some process happens. How-to articles, guides, or culinary recipes are non-academic analogs of process analysis essays.

Let’s learn how to write this paper to get an A+ and make readers love what they see.

What Is a Process Analysis Essay?

The purpose is to describe phenomena or actions pointing out a specific result [1]. In your essay, readers expect to see a detailed plan of how to do something or how something works or happens.

There are different types of process analysis. Below are five to consider for crafting your paper.

Five types of process analysis

  • Directive process analysis.  You provide a detailed guide on how to do something and get the desired result.
  • Informational process analysis.  You provide a detailed explanation of how something is done or happening.
  • Causal process analysis.  You show cause-and-effect relations and emphasize them.
  • Comparative process analysis.  You compare two or more processes and point out their similarities and differences.
  • Progressive process analysis.  You focus on the chronological order of a process and stick to it in your descriptions and explanations.

Directive vs. informational analysis

These two types are the most widespread, so students often confuse them. The difference between them is simple:

A directive analysis  is for describing the processes readers can put into practice. Example: an article on how to bake a cupcake. Written well, it directs a person with no advanced cooking skills but patience and attention to try making yummy cupcakes.

Another example can be a process analysis of how a spaceship works. It’s clear that working with spaceships requires previous education, preparation, and specific knowledge. Readers will hardly put this analysis into practice but understand the basic principles of how a ship works. In this case, your process analysis essay will be  informational , showing how something works or happens.

Informational analysis is also relevant for the processes that take part without human efforts or intervention, like different natural processes (volcanic eruption, sedimentation, etc.).

How to Write a Process Analysis Essay

When you work on a process analysis essay, your efforts start long before you write its first word. First, you choose a proper topic. Then, you craft an outline for your future essay to be informative and coherent.

Keep reading for more details on these and three other steps to process essay writing.

1) Choose a topic

The secret of a stellar essay is your honest interest in the topic. If your teacher assigns several titles to choose from, take the one you like most. If you don’t see anything engaging, try to suggest your topic: When related to the discipline you study, the big chance is a teacher will approve it. More than that, you can get extra points for showing initiative.

When you need to choose a topic yourself, consider those exciting yet familiar to you. Remember that you’ll describe the process: It will be much easier to write about something you know well, agree?

Thus, you can be a big fan of science fiction, but it doesn’t mean you understand all the elements of a powerful sci-fi story creation. In contrast, you might know how to do the laundry but have zero wish and interest in writing about that. Find something you know and are passionate about.

Here are several topic ideas for a process analysis essay to inspire you:

  • The process of conducting effective academic research
  • How to create a budget and manage personal finances in college
  • Developing a study schedule for optimal time management
  • How to  write an essay about yourself
  • The process of learning a new language: strategies for effective self-study
  • How to design an eco-friendly project
  • Steps to planning your future career path
  • Getting ready to engage with public speech: from idea to delivery
  • The process of conducting an effective job search
  • How to develop healthy eating habits: meal planning

2) Outline your paper

process-analysis-essay-outline

Many students consider outlining a waste of time, but it’s a must for writing a stellar essay. It allows you to see the structure of your paper beforehand and revise it if necessary. An outline helps notice gaps and ensure you won’t miss any argument you plan to include in your essay.

You don’t need to make a  perfect  outline before you start writing. It happens that the logic of the text guides you, and you see where to add more, write less, or swap paragraphs. But the outline will show your main points, and you can see if you cover the topic logically or need to change something.

3) Write an introduction

Don’t start too far. For example, if writing about cooking banana pancakes, you don’t need to start with a history of banana farms. You can give some background information if it’s necessary to understand the topic but emphasize more essential points related to the process.

Here’s how to start a process analysis essay:

  • Write a hook sentence to engage readers.
  • Provide background information on the topic (in short!).
  • State a thesis: Tell readers what you’ll describe or explain.

4) Format your process essay body

In the essay body, explain each step or stage of the process. You have two tasks here:

  • Divide it into logical steps [2]. (Your prepared outline will help!)
  • Describe each step, but don’t go into unnecessary detail.

It’s probably one of the most essential lessons for you to learn about writing a process analysis essay—how to explain the process to the audience without going too far and confusing them.

5) Craft a concluding paragraph

In the conclusion, you restate the main steps or stages in short. The general rule is that you shouldn’t provide new information in your final paragraph:

Summarize the body paragraphs and add a few motivating words for readers.

You can say why the described process is relevant nowadays, why it’s exciting, or where your audience can find more details about it. Leave them with some food for thought so they remember your essay and want to learn more about the process you explained.

Process Analysis Essay Example

Below is a sample to use for informative and educational purposes. It will help you understand the process anylisis structure:

Key Takeaways

  • Given the different types of process analysis, choose the right one before you start writing.
  • Pick a topic you know well and are passionate about.
  • Write the outline: It shows if your essay will be logical and cover the topic.
  • Don’t start your introduction too far from the main point.
  • Be specific in your descriptions and explanations, but don’t confuse your readers with too many details.
  • Don’t add anything new to the conclusion of your essay. Instead, briefly note why your topic is relevant or interesting.

  • how things work;
  • how to do or make something;
  • how something operates or happens.

So, if you want to know how an aircraft flies or how to start a business, you need to deal with process analyses that detail these procedures. You might be asking yourself: Are these two processes similar to each other? In fact, they are different. Moreover, there exist other types of processes. That’s why we have united some basic types into categories for your convenience.

The picture shows the main types of processes for process analysis.

Let’s get into the details.

Just in 1 hour! We will write you a plagiarism-free paper in hardly more than 1 hour

  • Processes that are either related to people or performed by them, such as relationships, psychological aspects, or some manuals. These include descriptions of how to overcome depression, work in a team, or change the oil in your car.
  • Processes that take place within a society. For example, it can be a description of the electoral process or how the judicial system works.
  • Processes that occur in nature. It may be an explanation of cell division, the process of season change, or the life cycle of an organism. Process analysis plays a crucial role in scientific research. It helps to describe complex mechanisms and procedures, leading to advancements in science.
  • Processes that are performed by machines. It can be an explanation of how a car engine works or how a helicopter flies.
  • documenting knowledge;
  • analyzing some separate actions;
  • finding problematic issues;
  • identifying the options for further improvements.

As you can see, some of these processes just need to be described , while others should be explained . There is a considerable difference between a description and an analysis. If you want to find it out, read the following part of this article.

✏️ Two Types of Process Analysis

As you already know, a process can be either described or explained. Following this, the two types of process analysis are:

  • Directive process analysis: a description of a process.
  • Informational process analysis: an explanation of how something works.

The primary difference concerns the purpose of these analyses. Now, let’s go into details.

Directive Process Analysis: Examples & Definition

Directive process analysis (also called prescriptive) answers the question of how to do or make something . In other words, it serves as an outline of specific steps a person should take to achieve the desired result. For example, it may be a description of how to plan a party or write a particular essay type (like this article.)

This type of process analysis is used in tutorials, manuals, or policy guides. In most cases, technicians and decision-makers utilize it.

Informational Process Analysis Essay: Examples & Definition

In contrast, an informational process analysis (also called explanatory or descriptive) demonstrates how something works or is done . To be more precise, it presents information about the way some things or phenomena function. For example, it can describe how a disease affects our bodies.

A descriptive analysis consists of two parts:

  • data gathering;
  • identifying casual relationships.

This combination helps find out the essence of the process.

An informational process analysis may be found in essays, magazine or newspaper articles, or videos. Mostly, students, researchers, or just curious people are interested in this type.

We have talked about the process analysis definition and types. Now, it’s time to find out about a process analysis essay and how to write it correctly. In this section, you will find lots of interesting and helpful information on how to write each part of the essay, some tips on topics selection, and examples.

Process Analysis Essay Outline

Let’s start with the essay structure. Keep in mind that a process analysis should be written in chronological order. If you want your readers to understand the presented process clearly, divide it into stages and then into steps. It will make your essay more coherent.

A process paper outline consists of 4 parts. Here they are:

The picture shows the main steps in writing a process analysis: introduction, main body, conclusion.

Process Analysis Essay Topics: How to Choose

Choosing a topic may seem confusing. You have many things you want to talk about, and you simply can’t decide. Sounds familiar? Don’t worry; these tips will help determine what process analysis essay topic to choose.

To select a topic, you need to:

  • Analyze your interests and hobbies;
  • Choose a process related to your interests;
  • Look for something you are familiar with and don’t need any further research;

To sum it up, write about something you like and know about.

How to Start a Process Analysis Essay

You’ve chosen the topic but don’t know how to start writing about it? Don’t worry; we’ve collected the most effective strategies to help you create an excellent introduction.

It’s worth mentioning that your introductory part depends on the type of your process analysis. If it’s a directive essay, you need to explain the process to your readers. If it’s an informational essay, you describe the process.

STEP #1: Start with a definition . It’s necessary to mention the purpose and importance of your paper. The audience should have a meaningful reason for reading your essay.

Writing a perfect essay is easier than you think (directive.)

Stress is one of the reasons for health problems (informational.)

STEP #2: Add some background information . Expand on the details and define the process.

Baking requires particular skills and time. However, if you do everything correctly, you will get an excellent cake (directive.)

Constant stress exposure leads to the development of various health disorders, resulting in complex treatment (informational).

STEP #3: End your introduction with a thesis statement . Present the steps or stages of the process in one sentence.

To write a perfect essay, one needs to search for information from different sources, analyze the gathered data, and organize the ideas into a coherent text (directive.)

Chronic stress leads to the rise of blood pressure, the release of histamine, and a change of insulin level (informational.)

Just follow these steps to make sure you included all the necessary aspects in your introduction.

Process Analysis Thesis Examples and Tips

A thesis statement is a roadmap of your essay. That’s why it’s important to make it an effective one. Here’s what to keep in mind when writing a powerful thesis.

  • Its content. It should contain all the essential information on your topic. A thesis is like a presentation of your paper in one sentence. That’s why you need to be clear and concise. Each of the aspects mentioned in a thesis should be expanded in a body paragraph.

Baking a pie is a simple process as all you need to do is to mix all the products, prepare the filling, and bake the combined ingredients in the oven.

When you see such a thesis, you understand that the paper will be about baking a pie rather than changing a tire.

  • The number of parts. In fact, a process analysis thesis consists of two parts: the main point and the organizational format. The first element focuses on the purpose of the thesis. It’s worth mentioning that the content of the second part depends on the type of your process analysis essay.
  • Its place in the text. Your thesis should be situated at the end of your introduction. To be more precise, it’s the last sentence of this part. In such a way, our audience will get a hint about the content of the following body paragraphs.

Feel free to check out the additional tips below. They will make your thesis perfect.

  • Make it an affirmative sentence . Don’t write your thesis in the form of a question. This statement should be the answer to the question of the audience.
  • Try to make it emphatic . Don’t start your thesis with trite phrases such as   “this essay will explain,” “I will inform you about,” or “I will describe.”
  • Add more aspects if necessary.  For example, the thesis may state the inefficiency or unfairness of the process in question.

Process Analysis: Paragraphs for the Main Body

Similar to a thesis statement, the content and structure of the main body depend on your essay type. We have prepared several useful strategies for both types.

Informational Process Analysis: Body Paragraphs

Directive process analysis: body paragraphs, transition words for process essay & examples.

Each process has a beginning, a middle part, and an ending. To present a process analysis, divide it into meaningful parts and organize them properly. The readers should always have a clear understanding of a succession of actions.

That’s why you need to use transitional words. They can help the readers follow the text. We have prepared a list of transition words with some examples. Check it out below.

Process Essay Conclusion Writing Strategies

Finally, we get to the concluding part and how it should be arranged. Here are some helpful strategies for you to write an effective conclusion.

  • Briefly summarize all the information you mentioned in your body paragraphs.
  • Don’t introduce any new details. This part intends to conclude the essay.
  • Paraphrase your thesis statement.
  • Relate your conclusion with the introduction. There should be a logical ending for your essay. Sum up the information presented in all the parts of your paper.

To conclude, stress produces a negative effect on health. That’s why you should do something to reduce its impact. Include meditation and yoga in your daily routine. Don’t forget to have enough sleep. If you follow all these recommendations, your mental and physical health will improve very soon.

📑 Process Paragraphs Examples & Bonus Tips

We have already composed the process analysis essay. Now you know what to include and what to pay attention to while writing such a type of essay. However, we would like to share a list of some additional tips with you. They will help you to look at your paper from different angles and make it perfect.

Bonus tips:

  • Consider the tone of your writing. Try to sound as professional as possible.
  • Don’t forget about the formal style. Avoid writing in 1 st person. Instead, use the 2nd person in directive and the 3rd person in informational process analyses:
  • You can interrupt the chronology of your process description. Sometimes, it’s essential to specify the terms or concepts, show how the preceding and following steps are connected, or clarify why it’s necessary to do some steps simultaneously.
  • Give your readers a specific reason to care about your essay. Before writing your thesis statement, ask yourself: Why do people need to know about this process? The thesis should reflect the answer to this question.

Finally, we would like to present you with a process analysis essay example. Pay attention to the contents of each essay part:

At the same time, do your best to be useful: if your reader benefits from getting acquainted with your essay, then you have achieved success.

Process Analysis Essay Structure

A process analysis essay is like a tutorial put on paper. In it, you are supposed to teach your readers to do something that is of interest to them. This is why a process analysis essay structure is built around the procedure itself and its main steps. But it has all the usual parts of an essay: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. You also can start your work on the paper with a process analysis essay outline, which will make the writing process much easier for you.

Process Analysis Essay Outline

Unlike an explanatory essay outline, an outline for a process analysis essay would basically look like a recipe. In the introduction, you will specify what exactly you are going to talk about and why it is important. The body will contain a list of ingredients, materials, and tools, as well as a list of steps needed to accomplish the task. Finally, you will sum your explanations up in the conclusion without going into much detail.

process analysis essay structure layout

How to Start a Process Analysis Essay

In the introduction to your process analysis essay, you need to make clear what activity you are going to write about and why it can be of use for your reader. So, try to avoid writing in circles and proceed straight to the point. Also you can get help from professional writers at our " write my essay " service.

For example , when writing about the first steps in coding, mention that in the XXI century, this skill is an essential asset for everyone rather than only IT specialists. An introduction to a process analysis paper that focuses on using Zoom or any other technology related to distance learning might make a mention of the relevance distance learning has recently acquired.

The body of a process analysis essay consists of two major parts. First, you should offer a detailed description of all the materials and equipment needed. Then, you should provide your readers with a simple-to-follow guide that will take them through every step of the procedure.

For example , if you are writing about cooking something, start with a list of ingredients and kitchen utensils, and then proceed to explain every step your reader should take until the dish is ready. Devote a separate paragraph to each distinct stage of preparation and cooking.

Conclusion

In your conclusion, sum up the whole process you have just described without making it too detailed. Spice it up with some considerations on why your essay might be interesting and useful or add a discreet call to action.

Follow these 3 steps to make writing your process analysis essay smooth and effortless.

Choose Your Topic Smartly

The topic you select will define the structure of your essay, its style, and the general atmosphere, so you definitely need to start with choosing the subject matter wisely. You do not want to pick something too simple because you will have nothing to elaborate on. But a too complex topic will make your life unnecessarily complicated. According to our paper writing service writers, the golden mean is wide enough for you to choose a subject that will provide enough space for you to showcase your writing skills and will not ultimately exhaust you. You can find a list of smart process analysis essay topics above.

Think About Your Reader

Any writing revolves around the reader, especially a process analysis essay and informative essay . So, the main ingredient to the process analysis essay success recipe is making sure the end-product is easy-to-read and informative.

  • Your style should be clear and concise.
  • Do not repeat yourself or resort to wordy explanations.
  • Insert transition words and sentences.
  • Use imperative sentences sparingly.
  • If you decide on using terminology, be sure to clarify the terms.
  • And, most importantly, proofread your paper for grammar and clarity. You can use Grammarly and Hemingway apps for this purpose because there is always something that a human eye will miss.

Finally, imagine, you are a stranger reading the essay you have just written for the first time. Will you be able to follow all the steps described in the essay? Are all the materials and tools mentioned? Are the descriptions detailed enough? Is the algorithm logical and consistent? Once you have answered all these questions in the affirmative, rest assured that your process analysis essay is well-written and reader-friendly.

Stay Consistent and Detail-Orientated

You have no choice but to stick to a logical sequence of steps needed to accomplish the task at hand. Otherwise, your reader might misinterpret your explanations and ultimately fail. A process analysis essay outline always makes the writing process easier, so do not neglect this stage. Alternatively, you can buy essay outline from our service. Then proceed to your first draft. How to Make Simple Vanilla Cookies

Simple vanilla cookies are a perfect home-made treat. Delicious, soft, and chewy, this pastry will soon win over every single family member and friend. The recipe includes only 6 basic ingredients. But most importantly, the dough is so easy to make that every beginner will cope with the task. So, making these cookies is a fun pastime both for children and adults.

To bake simple vanilla cookies, you will not have to make multiple trips to the supermarket. All the ingredients can be found in most kitchens. You will need the following 6 ingredients: 1 cup of unsalted softened butter, 1 ¾ cups of sugar, 1 large egg, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 2 ¾ cups of flour. Make sure you have a large bowl, a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients, and two baking sheets. You can grease the sheets or use parchment paper. The cookies may be flattened with a fork or a glass, so keep one of them within easy reach.

The dough for simple vanilla cookies is super easy to make. Put the butter into a large bowl and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon until the substance is fluffy. Then add sugar and go on mixing until the ingredients are well combined. Next, add the remaining sugar, the egg, vanilla, and salt. Mix properly. Finally, mix in the flour in three additions. Knead the dough thoroughly with your hands. The result is the loose and crumbly dough, which you will have to press together into a smooth paste that does not fall apart too easily.

The next stage of this engaging process is a transition between the dough and the fragrant hot cookies ready to be munched down. You need to preheat your oven to 350°F / 175 °C and get your baking sheets ready. You can either grease them or line them with parchment paper. Using your hands, shape the dough into medium-sized balls (as large as a tablespoon). Position the balls 1 inch / 2,5 cm apart on the baking sheet and flatten them with the help of a fork or the bottom of a glass. If the fork sticks to the dough, you can dip the fork into granulated sugar.

Finally, proceed to the very last and much-anticipated stage of this baking ritual. Place your baking sheets into the preheated oven and wait for about 10-15 minutes until the cookies start turning slightly brown. Then remove the cookies from the oven. After the cookies have cooled down a bit, serve them on a large plate or put into a can for later.

Simple vanilla cookies are an all-purpose dessert. They are a great match for a steaming cup of coffee in winter and a sweated glass of iced tea in summer. The recipe is extremely easy, and all the ingredients can be found at hand. All you have to do is mix the six ingredients well, shape the cookies, and bake them for around 10 minutes. Maybe, these cookies will become your best study mate and reading companion. So, why not give them a try?

We sincerely hope you have enjoyed reading this process analysis essay example. Now let us take a closer look at its structure. The first paragraph is an introduction. It tells the reader why simple vanilla cookies are such a great dessert and why the reader should try baking them. The body includes 4 paragraphs. Thus, the second paragraph of the essay contains a list of ingredients and kitchen utensils. The third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs are devoted to three distinct stages: making the dough, shaping the cookies, and baking them. Finally, the last paragraph is a conclusion which sums the whole process up, highlights the advantages of the resulting product, and also contains a call to action. We bet very few readers will stay indifferent to the simple yet potent charm of these super easy cookies.

As you can see, writing process analysis papers is no harder than baking simple vanilla cookies. Yet, you will surely need time to choose a topic, brainstorm for ideas, prepare a functional outline, write your first draft, and then carefully polish it. Please, do not forget to proofread your paper! So, do not procrastinate for too long and start writing right now.

How to Write an Effective Process Analysis Essay: Tips and Examples

How to Write an Effective Process Analysis Essay: Tips and Examples

Writing an effective process analysis essay is an important skill that every student should master. This type of essay aims to provide a detailed description of a specific process or procedure. Whether you’re writing about how to plant seedlings or how to analyze a literary work, a well-written process analysis essay can guide readers through the steps in a clear and concise manner.

When writing a process analysis essay, it’s always important to start with a strong thesis statement that clearly states the purpose of the essay. For example, if you’re writing about how to grow a garden, your thesis statement could be “Growing a garden requires careful planning, proper planting techniques, and regular maintenance.”

Once you have your thesis statement, it’s important to divide the process into clear and logical steps. Each step should be explained in detail, using descriptive language to help readers visualize the process. For example, if you’re writing about how to plant seedlings, you could explain how to prepare the soil, how deep to plant the seeds, and how much water they need.

Throughout the essay, it’s important to use rhetorical devices such as narration, examples, and comparisons to keep the reader engaged. By providing real-life examples or comparing the process to something familiar, you can make the essay more relatable and interesting.

Another key element of a process analysis essay is the use of transitional words and phrases. These words and phrases help guide the reader through the steps of the process. For example, words like “first,” “next,” and “finally” can be used to indicate the order of the steps. Words like “also” and “in addition” can be used to show that one step builds upon another.

When choosing examples for your process analysis essay, it’s important to choose ones that are relevant to your topic and will help readers better understand the process. For example, if you’re writing about how to change a flat tire, you could provide a step-by-step explanation accompanied by illustrations or photographs.

Understanding the Purpose of a Process Analysis Essay

A process analysis essay often includes a clear thesis statement that establishes the overall purpose of the essay. For example, a thesis statement might state, “This essay will explain the step-by-step process of planting and growing seedlings in containers.” The thesis statement sets the tone for the essay and helps the writer stay focused on the main topic.

When writing a process analysis essay, the writer should always keep the target audience in mind. It is important to use clear and concise language that the reader can easily understand. The essay should be written in a logical and organized manner, with each paragraph focusing on a specific step or aspect of the process.

One effective way to structure a process analysis essay is to use a division/classification organization. This means dividing the process into distinct steps or categories and organizing them in a logical order. For example, if the process is about making a fish taco, one could divide it into steps such as “preparing the fish,” “making the sauce,” “assembling the taco,” and “serving.”

For a process analysis essay to be effective, it is important for the writer to have a deep knowledge of the subject matter. This can be achieved through research and personal experience. The writer should also provide definitions and explanations for any technical terms or concepts that may be unfamiliar to the reader.

A process analysis essay is a popular type of essay in academics, as it allows students to demonstrate their understanding of a process and their ability to communicate that understanding to others. It can be used to analyze a variety of topics, from cooking recipes to scientific experiments to cultural rituals.

Planning and Preparing for the Essay

1. understand the assignment.

The first step in planning your process analysis essay is to thoroughly read and understand the assignment. Pay close attention to the requirements and guidelines provided by your professor or instructor. Identify the main topic and any specific instructions, such as the preferred essay format or length.

2. Choose a Suitable Topic

Once you have a clear understanding of the assignment, it’s time to select a topic for your process analysis essay. Consider choosing a subject that you are familiar with or passionate about. This will make the writing process more enjoyable and allow you to share your knowledge with your readers effectively.

3. Conduct Research and Gather Information

Before writing your essay, gather all the necessary information and materials related to your chosen topic. Conduct thorough research and gather information from reliable sources such as books, articles, or reputable websites. Take note of any key definitions, examples, or step-by-step processes that will contribute to the overall effectiveness of your essay.

4. Create an Outline

A well-structured outline is essential for organizing your thoughts and ensuring a logical flow of ideas in your process analysis essay. Start by creating a thesis statement that clearly states the purpose of your essay. Then, outline the main points and supporting details that you will discuss in each paragraph. This will help you stay focused and keep your essay well-organized.

5. Determine the Essay Structure

Decide on the most appropriate essay structure based on your topic and desired writing style. Commonly used structures for process analysis essays include division/classification, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, and definition. Choose the structure that best suits your topic and allows you to present your information in a clear and coherent way.

6. Start Writing

7. revise and edit.

After completing the first draft of your essay, take the time to revise and edit your work. Read through the essay carefully, checking for any grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, or unclear sentences. Make sure that your ideas flow logically and that the information is presented effectively. You may also consider seeking feedback from someone else, such as a friend or classmate, to get a fresh perspective on your essay.

8. Finalize Your Essay

By following these steps, you can ensure that your process analysis essay is well-planned, well-structured, and effectively delivers the information to your audience. With the right organization and attention to detail, your essay will be engaging and informative, leaving a lasting impact on your readers.

Structuring the Essay for Clarity and Understanding

For example: “In this essay, we will analyze the process of growing a garden, focusing on the key steps involved in preparing the soil, choosing the right plants, and maintaining proper watering.”

Body Paragraphs

The body paragraphs of your essay will provide a step-by-step analysis of the process. Each paragraph should focus on a specific step and provide clear instructions and explanations. It is always helpful to use tools such as comparisons, definitions, and cause-effect analysis to thoroughly analyze each step and make it easily understandable for the reader.

For example: In the first body paragraph, analyze the process of preparing the soil by explaining the needed composition, how much mulch to use, and the various tools needed for the job. Then, move on to the next steps such as choosing the right plants and proper watering techniques.

For example: “By following these step-by-step instructions, anyone can successfully grow a garden and enjoy the benefits of fresh produce. Remember to analyze the specific needs of each plant and adjust watering accordingly. With patience and proper care, you can create a garden full of life, color, and delicious fruits and vegetables.”

Writing Effective Tips and Examples

1. establishing a clear organization.

One of the most important aspects of writing an effective process analysis essay is to establish a clear organization. This means breaking down the steps or processes into logical paragraphs or sections. Each paragraph should focus on a specific step and flow smoothly into the next one. By establishing a clear organization, you make it easier for readers to follow along.

2. Providing definitions and explanations

When writing a process analysis essay, it is important to provide definitions and explanations for any unfamiliar terms or concepts. This helps readers understand the topic better and ensures they can follow along with the steps or processes you are describing. Definitions can be included within the text or in a separate glossary at the end of the essay.

3. Using examples and anecdotes

Examples and anecdotes add depth and context to your process analysis essay. They help to illustrate the steps or processes you are describing and make the essay more engaging for readers. For example, you could include a personal story about how you successfully followed a particular process or provide examples of different situations where the process could be applied.

4. Analyzing the purpose and audience

When writing an effective process analysis essay, it is important to consider the purpose and audience of your writing. The purpose of your essay will influence the tone and style you use, while the audience will determine how much background information or explanation is needed. For example, if you are writing for a university composition class, you can assume your readers have a basic understanding of the topic and can skip over some of the more elementary explanations.

These tips and examples will help you write an effective process analysis essay that is informative and engaging. By using clear organization, providing definitions and explanations, and using relevant examples and anecdotes, you can create an essay that will engage your readers and effectively convey the desired information. So, next time you sit down to write a process analysis essay, give these strategies a try and see what a difference they can make!

Revising and Editing the Essay for Perfection

When it comes to revising your process analysis essay, always try to put yourself in the shoes of your readers. Assume that they know nothing about the process you’re describing and make sure to provide a clear and detailed explanation of each step. It’s also important to check if your instructions are logical and easy to follow.

One useful tool for revising your essay is to have someone else read it and provide feedback. This can be a friend, family member, or even a classmate. Getting another person’s perspective can help you identify any areas that may need clarification or improvement.

During the revision process, pay attention to the organization and flow of your essay. Make sure that each paragraph follows a logical order and that the steps are presented in a clear and concise manner. Use transition words and phrases to guide the reader from one step to the next.

Edit your essay for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. A well-written process analysis essay should be free of any technical mistakes that can distract the reader from understanding the process. Use online tools or consult a grammar and style guide to help you with this step.

To illustrate the process of revising and editing, let’s take a look at an example. Here is an excerpt from a process analysis essay on “How to Make Homemade Ice Cream”:

“First, gather all the necessary ingredients: milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and your choice of mix-ins. Next, combine the milk, cream, and sugar in a saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Then, remove the mixture from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to cool for about 30 minutes.”

In this example, the writer could consider adding more details about the specific measurements of each ingredient, the duration of heating, and the desired temperature at which the mixture should cool. This will ensure that the instructions are thorough and leave no room for confusion.

Learn to write a good thesis statement for the two types of process analysis essay, informing readers of the benefits of following your instructions or showing them how a task is accomplished.

  • Direct Process Analysis Thesis Statements
  • Explanatory Process Analysis Thesis Statements

1 Direct Process Analysis Thesis Statements

For direct process analysis essays, the statement should inform the reader of the results they will obtain if they follow your directions carefully. Include at least two and preferably three benefits the reader will gain. If you are describing how to bake an organic apple pie, for example, benefits might include "a delicious, golden brown organic dessert." Include safety precautions if you are describing how to perform a chemistry experiment or how to repair a machine, for example, "Follow these directions to safely use lab equipment to perform the experiment."

2 Explanatory Process Analysis Thesis Statements

Explanatory Process Analysis essays present how a process works, such as how a product is manufactured. They are not intended to guide the reader to directly follow instructions. Include at least three primary steps in the process that you are explaining in your thesis. If you are describing how toasters are made, for example, include the steps of case molding or forming, heating wire manufacture, and assembly in your thesis statement.

4. Process Writing

4. process essay sample.

Take a look at the following student essay, which describes a process. Note the different tools the writer uses (Specific details; definition of terms; reasons; don’ts; possible pitfalls. It might be a good idea to actually print a copy of the essay and highlight the different process techniques used to develop each paragraph and to identify which pattern of development is used. Do you think you could rewrite this using one of the other two patterns we discussed?

Acine De Pe Pe Fruit Salad

Acine De Pe Pe Fruit Salad, a unique fruit salad sure to get you hooked after the first bite. This recipe has been passed down to me from previous generations in my family. The kids always request that I make this to bring to holiday or family gatherings because they can’t get enough of it! Even though this salad does take two days to make, the amount of time spent each day is minimal and worth the time spent preparing it. You will want to start the salad the day before you will be serving it.

The first thing that you will need to do is to go the grocery store to purchase the ingredients that you will need. Since this recipe has to be done in precise steps, if you forget an ingredient you cannot just buy it later and add it in, therefore, be sure to bring your shopping list of all ingredients with you to the grocery store. The list of ingredients you will need is:

·         ½ box Acine De Pe Pe

Note:  These are small macaroni ball looking pasta – similar consistency to tapioca. You can find the box in aisle with spaghetti and other pasta. I have found that not every store carries the Acine De Pe Pe pasta, so you may have to visit a couple of grocery stores before you find it.

·         20 oz. can of Crushed Pineapple

·         16 oz. can of Mandarin Oranges

·         1 lg. container of Cool Whip

·         16 oz. jar of Maraschino Cherries

·         ¾ cup of Sugar

·         2 Eggs

·         4 tsp. of Flour

Once you have all of these ingredients, it is time start to prepare the salad. You will need a  5 quart pasta pan to boil the Acine De Pe Pe noodles in; a medium saucepan to mix ingredients together and boil ingredients to create your  sauce mix; a large mixing bowl to mix ingredients together; a wooden spoon  to mix ingredients together; a strainer to drain the crushed pineapple and mandarin oranges into your                                                       saucepan and also to drain and cool your pasta in once cooked; a can opener to open the cans of crushed pineapple and mandarin oranges; a paring knife to chop the mandarin oranges and maraschino cherries;  tin foil or plastic wrap to cover the bowl before putting into the refrigerator to sit overnight; and, a cutting board to chop the mandarin oranges and maraschino cherries on. One you have gotten all the above out on your countertop, you are ready to prepare the salad.

On the first day of preparation you will start out by filling your 5 quart pasta pan ½ way with hot water, put on the stove and bring to a boil on medium heat. Once the water is boiling, add ½ a box of Acine De Pe Pe macaroni balls and stir. Boil on medium for approximately 11-13 minutes. Remove from stove, drain by pouring into strainer over the sink. Let sit and cool while you are preparing the other steps. These noodles are very tiny, so you may see quite a few fall through the holes in the strainer. To prevent this, I usually put two strainers together, one inside the other.

While your noodles are cooling, use the can opener to open and drain 1 (20 oz.) can of crushed pineapple and 1 (16 oz.) can of mandarin oranges. Drain the juice from both the pineapple and the mandarin orange cans into the medium size saucepan on the stove. I usually like to use two cans of mandarin oranges as I like extra fruit in my salad, this is a personal preference. You will then add 2 eggs, ¾ cups of sugar, and 4 tsp. of flour to the juice in the sauce pan. Stir all the ingredients together with your wooden spoon. Cook on medium heat until it starts to bubble a little bit. Stir every every couple of minutes or so until it starts to thicken. The consistency that you are looking for is not too watery, but not as thick as pudding. Once it gets to this consistency, set aside to cool. It is very important not to add too much flour. At first the mixture seems very watery and seems like it will never thicken up, but it will if you stick to the 4 tsp. of flour. If, for some reason, you find it is not thickening up, you can add one or two extra teaspoons of flour, a little at a time.

While the sauce is cooling, place your cutting board on the counter, place your mandarin oranges on it and cut each slice of orange in half with your paring knife and then pour into your large mixing bowl.

Pour your crushed pineapple into the mixing bowl along with the mandarin oranges and stir together with your wooden spoon. Once your Acine De Pe Pe macaroni noodles are cooled, pour them into the large mixing bowl along with the crushed pineapple and mandarin oranges and mix with your wooden spoon.

Once the sauce is in your medium sized saucepan is cooled, pour over the Acine De Pe Pe macaroni noodles, crushed pineapple and mandarin oranges in your large mixing bowl. Mix together with your wooden spoon. Cover the bowl with either tin foil or plastic wrap and place in your refrigerator overnight. Even though this does not look like a large portion in your bowl right now, the noodles will

expand in size overnight in the liquid.

The next morning, take the mixing bowl out of the refrigerator and place on the countertop. Take the Cool Whip and the jar of maraschino cherries out and place on the countertop. Drain the jar of maraschino cherries and take the stems off of them. You will need your cutting board and paring knife to cut the maraschino cherries each in half. Pour all of the maraschino cherries, except 8 halves into your mixture in the large mixing bowl and stir with your wooden spoon. Stir all of the Cool Whip, except ½ cup, into the mixture in the large mixing bowl. Mix well. You can adjust the amount of Cool Whip accordingly, depending on how sweet you prefer. I use according to the recipe (if not more) as I like it sweet.

You can now transfer your salad in to a fancy bowl that you are going to want to serve it in on your dinner table and flatten out the mixture with your wooden spoon. Clean off your wooden spoon so that you can place the remaining Cool Whip on the top of the salad and smooth out over the whole surface, just enough to coat the top of the salad. You will then add the remaining maraschino cherry halves creatively on top of the cool whip to make it look pretty. I usually place them in a circle with about ½ inch in between each of the maraschino cherry halves. Put the salad back in to the refrigerator until you are ready to eat it at your meal.

Congratulations, you have now created a masterpiece sure to please all that sit at your dinner table!  There are varying opinions on whether this salad is a dessert or part of a meal, we will let you decide after your first bite!
