The Princeton Review SAT Vs. PrepScholar SAT (Which Is Better?)

  March 24, 2024

Young woman studying to improve SAT score

Editorial Note: We earn commissions from partner links on Sojourning Scholar. These commissions do not influence our content or opinions, ensuring our recommendations remain unbiased and based solely on merit.

We've purchased and spent several weeks using the Digital SAT programs offered by The Princeton Review and PrepScholar.

Where we evaluated both platforms for their performance in SAT lesson quality, student support, pricing, practice material, and customer policies.

After reading this article, you’ll have the information you need to decide which pf these two popular Digital SAT prep courses can boost your student’s SAT scores the most.

The Princeton Review vs PrepScholar Digital SAT Overview

The Princeton Review offers four SAT prep packages: the Digital SAT Self-Paced Course , the Digital SAT  Essentials Course , the Digital SAT 1400+ Course , and the Digital SAT 1500+ Tutoring.

The Self-Paced course is an online package providing basic preparation materials. While the Essentials course includes live instruction and additional practice tests.

As for the Digital SAT 1400+ and 1500+ courses, both offer score guarantees and include live instruction and personalized tutoring. PrepScholar offers three main SAT prep packages: the Complete Digital SAT Online Prep , PrepScholar Classes , and  Complete + Tutoring.

The Complete Prep option provides self-paced interactive lessons and practice materials. While the PrepScholar Classes adds live class hours to the base package. As you can tell, the Complete + Tutoring includes private tutoring.

Who should buy the PrepScholar Digital SAT course?

  • Self-studiers who don't need much instructor support
  • Students who prefer lessons and practice questions that cater to their specific needs

Who should buy The Princeton Review SAT course?

  • Students who work best in a classroom environment
  • Students who need more interactive live lessons

Similarities and Differences

Main similarities.

  • Both providers offer self-paced Digital SAT prep courses, live SAT prep classes and 1-on-1 tutoring with an SAT expert.
  • Self-paced courses include 12 months of continuous access.
  • Users of the self-paced plans receive no on-demand access to an instructor or live help via office hours.
  • There are no SAT mobile apps for either platform.

Main Differences

  • The Princeton Review offers in-person Digital SAT classes in various locations. In contrast, PrepScholar is entirely online.
  • PrepScholar’s self-paced platform uses an adaptive learning algorithm to deliver customized Digital SAT learning material to each student. However, The Princeton Review’s self-paced platform follows a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • After signing up for PrepScholar, users must complete a short diagnostic quiz. This option is not available on The Princeton Review platform.

The Princeton Review vs PrepScholar SAT: Performance Comparison

We evaluated these courses for several weeks based on key performance areas, including lessons, practice materials, and pricing.

SAT Lessons

First off, know that unlike other courses, both PrepScholar and The Princeton Review have updated their content for the Digital SAT with new lessons.

PrepScholar Digital SAT prep course straegy lessons

PrepScholar’s self-paced Digital SAT video lessons are more bite-sized typically under 10 minutes long and are complemented with a text guide.

Making the learning material ideal for both visual and text learners.

PrepScholar Digital SAT prep course reading and writing video lesson 2

PrepScholar Digital SAT prep course reading and writing video lesson 2

Furthermore, the lessons in the PrepScholar self-paced course are coupled with exercises like short activities and practice drills. Which allows users to immediately test their understanding of the concept being taught.

The Princeton Review’s new Digital SAT self-paced lessons are adaptations of a past recording of their premium Digital SAT live class totaling just over 12 hours of content.

In other words, you’re getting 12 hours of a similar learning material for much less than what you’ll pay for their live Digital SAT class.

The Princeton Review 1400+ Digital SAT Course

The Princeton Review 1400+ Digital SAT Live Course Session

However, unlike PrepScholar, the videos on The Princeton Review’s self-paced learning modules are not bite sized, as the average video length is around 23 minutes long.

From an engagement standpoint, the videos on both platforms do not feature an instructor on camera. However, PrepScholar stands out with its shorter-form lesson content, which tends to be more engaging.

What truly distinguishes PrepScholar from other digital SAT prep courses is the method of lesson delivery.

PrepScholar Digital SAT prep course dashboard

Upon registering with PrepScholar, users must take a diagnostic quiz before gaining full access to the course platform.

Following this quiz, PrepScholar's learning algorithm assesses your performance and starts recommending lessons and practice drills tailored to your skill level. This approach by PrepScholar ensures that students focus the bulk of their prep time on areas where they are weakest and need the most improvement.

Consequently, every PrepScholar Digital SAT course participant experiences the course in a personalized manner, making their learning experience uniquely efficient. In the category of Digital SAT lesson quality, The Princeton Review slightly outperforms PrepScholar, scoring 5/5 compared to PrepScholar's 4.9/5.

SAT Practice Material

Comparing the practice material on both courses, Prepscholar offers an enormous reserve with over 7,000 new Digital SAT online questions that do an excellent job of mimicking the real Digital SAT test-taking environment.

These questions are very similar in appearance to official Digital SAT questions and are just as challenging.

However, despite having a large practice question bank, Prepscholar doesn’t provide its own full-length Digital SAT practice tests.

Instead, students are directed to the College Board’s website to complete official Digital SAT practice tests using Bluebook.

In contrast, The Princeton Review offers over 800 new Digital SAT practice practice questions, which you’ll find in practice drills accompanying the lesson modules.

Where these drills are attempted in an environment that mimics the real Digital SAT.

But when it comes to full-length Digital SAT practice tests, The Princeton Review beat PrepScholar with their own set of 4 full-length Digital SAT practice tests.

The Princeton Review Digital SAT Practice Test Dashboard

The Princeton Review Digital SAT Practice Test Dashboard

These practice tests are 2-stage adaptive and have all the on-screen features of the real Digital SAT exam.

In terms of answer explanations, The Princeton Review provides all text-based answer explanations.

PrepScholar Digital SAT prep course detailed reading and writing answer explanation

Whereas Prepscholar does a better job of supplementing their text-based answer explanations with video-based answer explanations

Overall, given the larger volume of practice questions and better quality answer explanations, Prepscholar edges out The Princeton Review in this category with a perfect 5/5, while The Princeton Review comes i

Student Support

Both providers lack on-demand access to an instructor in their self-paced courses. However, their premium versions allow different levels of support.

Users of The Princeton Review's Digital SAT 1400+ live class package get 24/7 on-demand access to an instructor via chat.

TPR Digital SAT 1400+ Course On-Demand Tutor Support

24/7 On-Demand Tutor Support feature on The Princeton Review DSAT

They also get unlimited access to daily virtual classrooms called the Digital SAT Advantage Sessions.

However, PrepScholar only provides additional access to an instructor in their live class package.

While PrepScholar provides grading services for the optional essay section, The Princeton Review does not.

The Princeton Review caps its class size at approximately 25 students, whereas PrepScholar keeps the live classes smaller, with a maximum of 12 students per class.

This ensures that each student receives more attention from the instructor.

Both courses allow students to ask questions, ensuring a very interactive live classroom environment.

Considering that their pros outweigh those of PrepScholar in student support, The Princeton Review takes the lead in this category.

At the time of this review, The Princeton Review’s standalone self-paced SAT course started at $300. In contrast, PrepScholar’s self-paced course is priced at $397.

Pricing for The Princeton Review’s exclusive live SAT class starts at $2,200, with 36 hours of instruction. This price amounts to $61 per hour of live instruction.

If you go with their Essentials course containing 18 hours of live instruction, you pay $949. This price is equivalent to $53 per hour of live instruction.

PrepScholar only has one live class package, with 9 hours of classroom time. The pricing for this package starts at $900, amounting to an hourly cost of $100 per hour.

To help families who otherwise can’t afford their SAT prep programs, PrepScholar has monthly payment plans on many of their SAT prep packages. The Princeton Review offers no payment plans on their SAT packages.

When comparing both courses on the price per month of access and price per hour of instruction, The Princeton Review is the cheaper option.

Customer Policies

PrepScholar provides a 5-day risk-free trial that begins when you complete the diagnostic SAT quiz. Customers of The Princeton Review’s self-paced course can claim a 100% refund if they cancel the course within seven days.

For The Princeton Review’s instructor-led class packages, refunds are only possible before the first live class or tutoring session begins.

PrepScholar allows refunds for course cancelations made after the first live class or the first hour of the 1-on-1 tutoring session.

PrepScholar has a +160-point improvement guarantee on all SAT prep packages. In contrast, The Princeton Review limits its +150-point score improvement guarantee to the Digital SAT 1500+ and 1400+ prep packages.

Based on their bolder and more generous customer policies, PrepScholar has the advantage over The Princeton Review in this category.

Final Recommendation

Based on the selection factors considered, we found The Princeton Review to be the better choice for a wider demographic of students preparing for the SAT than PrepScholar.

This is one of the main reasons why The Princeton Review takes our top pick for the best Digital SAT prep courses on the market.

In our opinion, Prepscholar's Digital SAT learning technology provides a lot of value to students who want a personalized learning approach focusing on their strengths and weaknesses.

So, if you are looking for a self-paced Digital SAT prep course with a tailored learning approach, PrepScholar is the ideal choice.

The Princeton Review for SAT: An Honest Review

sat practice tests princeton review

The Princeton Review is one of the oldest and most successful test-prep companies around. Founded by a Princeton grad, they’ve been preparing students for the SAT (and a wide array of other standardized tests) since 1981.

Thanks to those decades of experience, they’re experts on the complex world of college admissions testing. And because these tests are such a large concern, The Princeton Review has lots of resources–financial and otherwise–to invest in their programs and their students. At the same time, their sheer scale gives The Princeton Review a corporate flavor, a quality that you may find either reassuring or alienating. jp99

Here, I’ll take a look at The Princeton Review’s online SAT programs, then give you a quick rundown on the comments that I’ve heard most often over the years from students and their families. Finally, I’ll offer guidelines to help you decide whether studying with The Princeton Review is right for you.

Princeton Review’s SAT-Prep Options

Like all older test-prep companies, The Princeton Review has traditionally focused on in-person classes and tutoring. These days, they’ve expanded their menu to include a variety of online offerings. Most of their SAT programs now combine automated, on-demand prep with some degree of individualized coaching. Which option you choose will depend on how much time you have to prepare and what kind of instruction you’re looking for.

Here are The Princeton Review’s three main options for online SAT-prep:

  • SAT & ACT Self-Paced
  • The SAT Ultimate Classroom

The SAT 1400+

The sat & act self-paced.

The Self-Paced course is (almost) entirely automated and on-demand. You’ll get access to practice materials for both the SAT and the ACT in one package.

Here’s what’s included…

  • Over 280 short video lessons covering both academic content and test-taking strategies
  • Over 3,200 practice questions
  • Short, single-section practice tests to help with focused learning
  • Four genuine College Board practice SATs
  • Full-length practice ACTs
  • SAT and ACT review sections
  • The Princeton Review’s Adaptive Recommendation Engine that personalizes the program in response to your performance
  • A dashboard where you can see your scores and track your progress
  • Three hours of “chat time” with a teacher, giving you access to a human tutor when you feel stuck
  • A seven-day money-back guarantee

There’s also a Self-Paced Plus option, which gives you 23 practice tests and five hours of one-on-one communication time with instructors.

The SAT Ultimate Courses (Ultimate 18 and Ultimate 25)

These are The Princeton Review’s most popular SAT courses. Here you get access to all of the automated features listed above, plus…

  • Either 18 or 25 hours of Live Online classroom instruction
  • Unlimited access to previously recorded Live Online sessions
  • Access to specialized SAT Advantage classes where instructors hone in on a key SAT topic
  • Either three (Ultimate 18) or four (Ultimate 25) proctored practice tests
  • 140 more video lectures
  • Additional self-administered practice tests
  • Individualized homework assignments
  • Detailed score reports to help you gauge your progress and focus your practice

Live Online events are exactly what they sound like: participatory group classes offered via video (in contrast to the pre-recorded video lectures that are also included). When you sign up for an SAT Ultimate Course, you’ll choose a class schedule that works for you and commit to attending at that time. Your class will meet once or twice weekly for three or four hours.

In addition to the Live Online sessions, you’ll get the same three hours of instructor chat time that comes with the self-paced packages.

Because of the Live Online component, the Ultimate programs aren’t quite as flexible as an online-only course. Be aware that class time plus homework do add up to a significant weekly time commitment. copacobana99

The Ultimate courses also involve three printed books:

  • The Official SAT Study Guide (College Board)
  • 10 Practice Tests for the SAT (The Princeton Review)
  • The Princeton Review SAT Manual Version 6.0 (The Princeton Review)

The Official SAT Study Guide is an essential resource for anyone getting ready for the SAT. All of its questions and practice tests are authentic, written by the same company that creates the SAT (the College Board). However, there are only eight of these tests available, so The Princeton Review supplements them with extra practice materials written by their own staff. As an SAT coach, I see this as a significant concern. For more on why, take a look below under “Cons.”

Students enrolled in the SAT 1400+ program are guaranteed a final composite score of 1400 or higher.

To qualify for that guarantee, you must:

  • Have taken the SAT or PSAT before and scored at least 1160
  • Attend every scheduled class session and complete all practice problems and assignments.

Students and families are sometimes frustrated by those requirements (especially since the company tends to put them in fine print). In fact, it’s only reasonable to ensure that everyone in the program is capable of achieving a 1400, and that they work their absolute hardest to get there.

The Princeton Review has been developing its teaching methods for decades. They’re confident that with their instruction, any student who’s already succeeded in reaching a 1160 will be able to move up to a 1400+.

  • A personalized study plan.
  • Live Online video classes in three-hour or four-hour blocks once or twice weekly over one to two months (36 hours total)
  • Specialized SAT Advantage classes where instructors zoom in on a key SAT topic
  • Access to all of the self-paced practice materials
  • Unlimited access to two expert instructors on demand. Tutors are available to you 24/7.
  • Four proctored practice exams
  • Eight single-section practice tests
  • 20 additional practice tests
  • Books for review and practice
  • A guaranteed composite score of 1400+ or your money back

Finally, The Princeton Review offers some form of score-improvement guarantee for every one of its programs. The qualifying criteria vary a little depending on which course you’re enrolled in.

Pros and Cons

Over my career as an SAT teacher and tutor, I’ve heard a wide range of responses to The Princeton Review from students and their families. Here are the comments that come up most often:

“My instructor was incredible.”

The Princeton Review puts a lot of time and care into choosing and training their staff. They look for both subject expertise and a warm, supportive (and humorous) demeanor. Just about everyone seems to be a fan of The Princeton Review teachers.

“We love the 1400+ guarantee.”

As far as I know, The Princeton Review is the only test-prep company to offer a guarantee like this. It speaks to their confidence in their faculty, and in the teaching methods that they’ve developed over their decades in business.

“I didn’t run out of questions.”

A dearth of practice questions is a real problem with many online SAT-prep companies. Diligent students often run out, especially if they’re focusing their drill on specific subject areas or question types. And since there’s no dedicated library of questions reserved for practice tests, students sometimes discover that there are no practice tests available to them because they’ve used up all of the questions. None of this happens with The Princeton Review.

“You get to practice with the College Board book.”

Working with authentic College Board questions is an essential element of everyone’s SAT-prep. As mentioned above, The Princeton Review uses the eight available official College Board tests in its programs. Unfortunately, they supplement The Official SAT Study Guide with lots of lower-quality questions written in-house. (See below under cons).

“The books are full of mistakes.”

I stopped using The Princeton Review materials in my classes some time ago for this very reason. There were quite a few typos, as well as flat-out mistakes, in both the Math and Verbal practice questions.

“The practice problems felt unrealistic.”

Once students tackle the actual SAT, they may notice a difference between The Princeton Review practice materials and the real test. The Princeton Review does incorporate some College Board content into their programs, but most of what students see is material written by The Princeton Review staff. There are other third-party companies (like Magoosh and Ivy Global) that do a better job of matching College Board content and style.

“The book was tough to get through.”

I’ve heard this said about all or most of The Princeton Review’s printed resources. The text feels unclear and the tone strikes some readers as condescending.

“There’s no mobile app.”

Unlike most other online SAT-prep companies, The Princeton Review doesn’t offer an app to let students use the on-demand content when they’re out and about. With SAT Ultimate and SAT 1400+, course participants are also required to refer to three full-sized books. These constraints make The Princeton Review courses a little less portable than other prep-programs that are entirely online.

“The dashboard is unhelpful and hard to navigate.”

The Princeton Review dashboard offers less detailed information than some others.  Students sometimes find it hard to assess how they’re doing or get where they need to go.

“There wasn’t enough individualized attention.”

I hear this especially from students who are already achieving high scores and want to move up even closer to a 1600. Live Online classes are geared to the needs of the group. If you need exceptionally specialized coaching, one-on-one tutoring is probably a better choice for you.

Princeton SAT Prep Review: Final Thoughts

Considering what a large and geographically wide-ranging organization The Princeton Review is, it’s not surprising that students come away with a variety of impressions. Your experience will depend, to some extent, on which program you choose, how much individual interaction you want, and who your teachers are.

You may do well in The Princeton Review SAT-prep program if:

  • You like the idea of working with one of the big, established test-prep companies
  • You’ve used The Princeton Review materials before and know that you like them
  • You’ve studied with The Princeton Review for another test (maybe a PSAT or ACT) and gotten good results
  • You’re already familiar with the official College Board practice tests, and are most interested in learning The Princeton Review’s test-taking strategies
  • You feel comfortable in a setting that’s a little more corporate and a little less warm and fuzzy
  • You want to study with an organization that has access to lots of detailed information about the ins and outs of universities and the college application process
