Economic Development Without Environmental Damage

essay on development without destruction

Many people say that damage to the environment is a risk of development. Based on this belief, there is also the assumption that it is impossible that development without destroying the environment can be realized. But that is not true, it can be done.

Many people question the possibility of development without harming the environment by asking “if development is carried out without destroying the forest or deforestation, then if you want to build a road, is the road built on trees and crosses the forest?”

This question is indeed quite intriguing; how can a road be built across the forest without touching the forest itself? It is possible if civil development technology is adequate – then this dream can be realized. However, it is unfortunate that the dream technology may only exist in an unknown future and that means for now it is all very impossible.

Hundreds of years ago, developed countries had cleared forests to build civilizations. The industrial revolution was the starting line for the development of civilization and the exploitation of natural resources. Now, developing countries are also starting to follow the same exploitative development trail.

Exploitative development is indeed very profitable. Just look at the countries that are able to take advantage of their natural products like fossil fuels, and are able to quickly become economic giants such as the United Arab Emirates.

Similar things can be seen in ASEAN member state Indonesia as well. However, poor governance and integrity make the country’s wealth benefiting only certain groups of people.

Oxfam and the non-governmental organization Forum on Indonesia Development (INFlD) stated that the wealth of the four richest people in Indonesia - amounting to an estimated US$ 25 billion – is almost equivalent to the assets of about 100 million poor people in the country. It was reported that the total wealth of 100 million poor people in Indonesia is US$ 24 billion, or around IDR 320.3 trillion. It's a sad disparity.

In contrast to Singapore, a country that can be said to have no natural resources - has to rack its brains to strengthen its economy. Various ways have been taken by the country to improve its economy, including tourism development and trade. Strengthening human resources, ease of investment, and high integrity are the keys to Singapore's economic strength.

New Model Of Development

Currently, the world is still in the phase of economic recovery due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To reach a point of stability, the application of the usual business development model will certainly not make a big contribution. The economic recovery phase should be momentum to reorganize the development model that has been implemented so far. More creative development without damaging the environment must be realized immediately.

To accomplish such an idea, there are three basic points, which in my opinion, are the foundation for implementing the new model of development.

First, is to make the environment a common issue in development. So far, the environment is still seen as a separate sector, therefore, its handling often does not get special intake because there are other sectors that are considered more important.

Making the environment a common issue is the best way to equalize perceptions in the implementation of development. When the environment has become a common problem, all sectors such as health, economy, tourism, and many others will be based on the implementation of appropriate policies that are environmentally friendly.

Second, is to stop exploitation by applying new and renewable energy. It is proper for development in the modern era to think more about the sustainability side of the energy that will be used. Awareness that fossil energy is an energy that will run out - must be a driving force to create new energy alternatives that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. There are many alternative energies that can be used, such as solar panels, geothermal, and even waste that can be processed into energy.

Third, is to implement strong and sharp supervision and law enforcement. Weak supervision and law enforcement in a country are some of the causes of irresponsible exploitation of nature.

It is now the time for the world to rise. Not only rising from adversity due to being hit by COVID-19 but also rising from environmental damage which is increasingly worrying.

Angola, Zambia, Sudan, South Sudan, and, South Africa have increasingly tied the health of their national economies to the demand of China’s industrialization needs. These economic ties have been pursued under the pretense of bilateral investments in pursuance of South-South partnerships. Sub-Saharan States have looked to China’s economy as a model for development and have enthusiastically agreed to strengthened ties to secure development objectives for their countries. This thesis therefore evaluates how the Beijing Consensus and China’s model of development have been applied to the sub-Saharan region. Its analysis will focus upon the comparison of expectations of this developing State to developing State(s) partnership against the realities of this perceived mutually beneficial agenda. It will demonstrate that China’s footprint in the region is craterous in nature. The ‘resource for infrastructure’ premise of Sino-African ties results in a regional ‘Made in China’ stamp. Thus, this thesis seeks to evaluate the realities of the Sino-African partnership with particular attention given to evaluation of the human rights influence on the region. It will seek to engage with examinations of how China’s investment in the region has impacted these States’ development and as a result, how China’s economic partnership has in practice influenced African human rights. This thesis will argue that China’s economic foreign policy in the sub-Saharan region has held significant legal ramifications as a result of its engagement, particularly in its effect on African human rights.

As many new certification systems for commodities have been established over the past decade, scholars have devoted sustained attention to the ways that these multi-stakeholder governance initiatives have transformed the industries in which they were launched. With a few notable exceptions, studies in this area have continued to focus on the development and impacts of new governance mechanisms, and on the sectoral or industrial changes that have ensued. In contrast to these 'inside-out' perspectives on governance innovation and change, this article considers how two prominent yet relatively under-studied commodity governance initiatives have been shaped by the broader political economic order in which they operate. To offer an 'outside-in' account of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and Bonsucro (formerly the Better Sugarcane Initiative), the article details recent changes in what the author terms the 'world commodity order', and situates the BCI and Bonsucro within this order. From this vantage point, the author ultimately makes two analytical claims: (i) that the world commodity order has not precluded the differential institutionalization of these initiatives; and (ii) that aspects of the order have circumscribed the potential of the BCI and Bonsucro to deliver pro-poor business practices.

Private competition to establish new principles and rules to govern the production and exchange of Africa’s commodities has intensified. Building on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) literature, this article analyses the implications of this unbalanced and unregulated competition. A case study of competing CSR initiatives in cotton shows that the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) commands relatively more power and less legitimacy than certified organic cotton systems in Tanzania. The second case – where the effects of unbalanced competition are largely absent – explores the efforts of timber concessionaires in Cameroon to achieve Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. The resulting system enjoys high legitimacy and outperforms the existing public regulatory framework. This analysis suggests the desirability of developing new global principles to regulate competition between transnational CSR systems.

Covid-19 will likely become a defining feature of our age. This is not simply because this global pandemic will probably have political, economic, and social repercussions reverberating across all world regions for years to come. It is mainly because these consequences may well accelerate the dynamics if not tip outright the balance from one international order to the next.

Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Paper No. 12/2008

Dunia P Zongwe

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is endowed with vast mineral wealth. However, although renewed activities in the mining sector ameliorated the DRC's fiscal position and GDP growth in 2005-07, generally the peoples of the DRC neither participate in nor benefit from the exploitation of mineral resources. The problem is that the exploitation of mineral resources in the DRC go against the interests of the Congolese peoples. To be sure, the Congolese peoples are some of the poorest in the world. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which the peoples of the DRC can in domestic, regional and international law gain control over mineral resources. Accordingly, the basic question for this paper is: What legal justifications in national, regional and international law could serve to increase the control of the peoples over mineral resources in the DRC? The paper argues that the scholarship on the legal justifications for a people-based mineral control do not fully articulate the right to control mineral resources (RCMR). The existing scholarship on the RCMR is limited in that it fails to: (1) fully articulate the RCMR, (2) examine the RCMR in terms of first and second generations of human rights and in terms of national mineral resources law, and (3) address the RCMR in the particular circumstances of the DRC. This paper fills up these gaps in the scholarship on the RCMR. Firstly, the paper demonstrates that, in Congolese law, regional and international law, there is more than one principal justification for a people-based control of mineral resources. These justifications include popular sovereignty, socioeconomic rights, the right of peoples to enjoy their national wealth, economic self-determination, permanent sovereignty over natural resources, and the right to development. Secondly, the paper utilizes democratic and socioeconomic rights enshrined in the Congolese Constitution and the Mining Code as a point of departure in advocating a people-based control of mineral resources. Finally, the paper gives an overview of the exploitation of mineral resources in the particular circumstances of the DRC.

This entry interrogates the harmful ways in which understandings of international law, development and natural resources have become intertwined by documenting current unsustainable and inequitable patterns of resource use, histories of extraction, exploitation and legal struggles over resource control. It suggests however, there are different ways of rethinking the relationship between law and the natural world and reimagining the destructive triad between international law, development and natural resources.

Politics Rules: Power, Globalization and Development

Politics rules. Whether we like it or not, we are subject to politics wherever we go and whatever we are doing. Development is always and everywhere political, and frequently occurs with the interests of the powerful at the forefront. Can we hope to better understand the politics that shapes and controls our lives and dominates the lives of others across the globe? In this concise volume, Adam Sneyd argues that it is imperative to understand the sub-field of development politics. He shows how the hard skill of careful political analysis can shed new light on some of today’s most intractable development challenges. In the end, Sneyd shows how conflicts over ideas can entrench underdevelopment and why we need better analyses of development politics in order to fight the status quo and expedite inclusive change.

Millennium Goal 7 - Ensure Environmental Sustainability

The nature of environmental conflicts in developing nations differs considerably from those in industrialized nations. In the latter, development has already occurred and most environmental conflicts are over how to minimize further resource destruction and how resources can be most efficiently used. But in the former, economic, social and political structures have not yet been widely affected by environmental changes brought about by industrialization. Therefore, what is at stake in developing countries is not only the use of environmental resources, but also the very process of development, and if state, civil society and the market can act cooperatively to create development while protecting the environment.

What one should consider when dealing with environmental conflicts in developing countries, is the fact that many of these countries have different situations within one territory. In Brazil, one can find urban, industrial areas with typical western-style environmental problems. But, in the same country, there are also regions with mixed development standards and areas inhabited by Amerindians, some of which still live in the Neolithic period. While the society in the industrialized southeast of Brazil has the same access to information as North Americans, within the Amazon forest one can find tribes, such as the Yanomami, whose members do not use numbers higher than three, do not have a written language and do not wear clothes.

Therefore, two main issues should be recognized when considering environmental conflicts. One, is that there should not be just one way of dealing with environmental conflicts in developing countries because local differences matter. The other, is that given the vastly different identities which exist in one country, the Western development model is not always appropriate. Nevertheless, market agents and donors financially supporting environmental organizations often do not understand this. As stated by Howell and Pearce (2001), development donors "usually overlook both local initiatives formed along ethnic, kin or clan principles that may play a role in achieving social justice and equality, and the fact that apparently modern organizations may be impregnated with primordial and clientelistic relations."

Western Models

Western development models have created institutional frameworks for negotiating environmental conflicts so they do not interfere with production or international trade. However, the legitimacy of this institutional framework has to be examined. As stated by Maria Dalce, "the great majority of the decision making processes taking place in the COPAM (the Brazilian regional environmental protection council) are controlled by the representatives of private companies". In such negotiations, the needs of local people are often overlooked.

This occurs because in developing countries, environmental problems are influenced by other issues such as social and economic concerns. Typically, these interests are related to the socio-economic structure and conditions under which people live. Thus, these interests sometimes take priority over environmental concerns.

Need for Structural Change

It emerged from the interviews that problems of insufficient education and nutrition, as well as ineffective social services, are dimensions that affect both identities and conflict dynamics. These, in turn, effect environmental issues.

Power Contests

Some of these dynamics are quite similar to those experienced in industrialized nations. Power contests are still the main reason behind many environmental conflicts. Development organizations, both national and international, have implemented local development projects that try to promote dialogue among stakeholders . However, as stated by Deborah Goldemberg, head of a governmental agency that focuses on small enterprises development, those powerful entrepreneurs don't participate in the projects.

In Brazil and in other developing countries, overall recognition of the importance of the environment resulted in the institution of good legal frameworks. These, however, are not always respected. Nevertheless, they have allowed for dialogue among the state, civil society and private companies, which has helped to change the prevailing image that NGOs were environmentally "good," while private companies were environmentally "bad."

Negotiation

Nevertheless, some conflicts between companies and civil organizations still persist. The NGO, AMDA has reported that in its dialogue and negotiation processes with Vale do Rio Doce, the main Brazilian mining company, the frequent change of the company's personnel made it difficult for them to develop a continued and stable relationship . Moreover, the non- existence of an environmental management system within Vale do Rio Doce aggravated this problem.

While this is a common strategy of companies to avoid negotiation, in this case it was interpreted by AMDA as pure lack of concern and bureaucratic chaos inside the company. So, in developing countries, it is still possible to find situations in which conflict emerges not because there is manipulation of interests , but just as a consequence of pure administrative chaos. And this may happen even inside in large companies operating in international markets.

Slowness and Complexity of Public Processes

When conflict emerges, other difficulties also take place. Public bureaucracy is probably one of the main sources of conflict in developing countries. The lack of efficient, transparent and accountable public administration makes it very difficult to negotiate with state governments. Frequently, this is because of corruption. To reduce such difficulties, state governmental structures must be reformed to reduce corruption and better meet the needs of local communities.

Interviewees such as representatives of the BAMCRUS project, AMDA , and the DLIS Forum have all declared that state failure constrains not only the implementation of their programs, but also the resolution of conflicts concerning environmental sustainability. As Maria Dalce from AMDA has stated:

What is needed is a deregulation that is probably going to create more space for these conflicts to be better negotiated, with more time. Mainly because if you are a counselor in the COPAM nowadays, you have to work with lots of papers and documents [...] and a lot of things could be simplified for you to have space there to negotiate more difficult conflicts.

Thus environmental conflict resolution in developing countries is more challenging than it is in industrialized countries. Many more issues are tied up in the environmental concerns. One cannot just address the environmental issues in isolation. One must address them within the greater social, political, and economic structural framework and one must consider the vast diversity present in all of these dimensions.

Dangers Of Development And Ecological Disasters (Essay Sample)

Dangers of development and ecological disasters.

Global development has continued ever since man began living on earth. People seek to continuously improve their lives and in so doing, they often overlook the role of the environment in man’s existence. The industrial revolution has, for instance, been hailed as a major breakthrough in human effort to achieve greater success and prosperity. However, this did not occur without significant ecological destruction. Development continuously poses a threat to ecological well-being, as discussed in this paper.

Nuclear energy is largely meant to help in the production of more electricity, a key component in man’s efforts to achieve greater development such as establishment of more industries and powering of homes. However, nuclear energy has been a major cause of ecological disaster. One of the most renowned ecological disasters ever reported in modern history is the Chernobyl accident in Ukraine in 1986.

The Chernobyl accident involved a nuclear leak in which a large amount of radioactive material was released into the air. Apparently, the nuclear station was manned by incompetent personnel. A thick cloud formed above the site of the accident, and this was carried to other countries through wind dispersion. Large land masses were affected by the spill, in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, thus affecting over 2 million inhabitants in those areas. It is said that over 30,000 people died as a result of radioactive rays emanating from the nuclear plant. Hundreds of thousands had to be moved elsewhere, from the surrounding areas. Other health effects associated with the accident include increased infant mortality, higher number of cancer cases, malformations, tumors, and genetic transmission of such effects. Food and harvests were also contaminated. Another effect was the destruction of marine environment from radioactive waste. When resultant radioactive waste was dumped into the ocean, millions of species of organisms were wiped out thus causing an imbalance in marine ecology.

Human efforts to develop have also caused an even greater number of forest fires. Each year, millions of hectares of forest and jungles are destroyed by fires, and this can be blamed squarely on human activities. First, in areas where man lives close to forests, some people seek to encroach on forest land. They cut down trees and burn vegetation in an effort to get more land for agriculture, or to build industries. Additionally, high temperatures as well as dry droughts associated with human destruction of the environment, including cutting down of forests thus causing limited rainfall, precipitate the occurrence of forest fires. Such fires destroy thousands of species of birds and other wildlife found in forests.

Petroleum spills have also been cited in many cases as a leading cause of ecological destruction. Petroleum spills are among the leading causes of oceanic contamination. Oil companies at times transport petroleum products for use in development projects, without exercising necessary caution and as such, accidents do occur. Oil spills in oceans result in major ecological destruction as fish and other organisms found in oceans lack oxygen and suffocate whenever huge quantities of oil spill in rivers, seas and oceans. Petroleum products are used all over the world in various industries ranging from automobiles to factories. In this regard, human development and ecological destruction seem to go hand in hand.

In conclusion, human development results in major destruction of the ecology. As outlined in this paper, such occurrences as petroleum spills, nuclear accidents, and forest fires are associated with significant environmental damage. As the human race has a tendency to continuously progress, destruction of the environment and ecology is unlikely to stop.

About the Interior Department

interior article 01

The interior department onboard a luxury mega yacht is comprised of hospitality specialists, also known as stewardesses. They are responsible for each guest’s experience onboard from the moment they arrive and are greeted with a refreshing cocktail and lavender scented hand towel, to the immaculate and elegant eight course dinner service.

This department is responsible for the following aspects of the yacht operation:

  • guest service on board
  • event planning and entertainment
  • planning and reserving events for guests ashore
  • interior appearance and maintenance
  • financial administration

Working as a stewardess will suit the personality of someone who loves to entertain, whether it be an intimate dinner party in your home or hosting a huge event to celebrate a friend’s birthday party at a private venue. To be a successful stewardess and progress in the industry, it is essential to learn from senior interior crew as this vocation consists of many "tricks of the trade" that must be taught and cannot be learned in a book.

A junior stewardess with no experience will get their first yacht job based on their interpersonal skills, ability to demonstrate strong work ethic and the manner in which they present themselves. They will be expected to work long, hard hours doing the most basic chores onboard to the very highest standards. A keen eye for detail and a passion for perfection are essential. The range of your responsibilities will depend on the yacht size and team.

As you progress as a stewardess you will be given more responsibilities, including guest service, and it is important to supplement your learning onboard with courses in areas you may be lacking, such as wine knowledge, flower arranging or computer skills. The stellar stewardess possesses a wide range of varied skills that allow them to exceed guest expectations in every situation. With at least three years of experience, some stewardesses are ready to take a leadership role aboard yachts as the chief stewardess.

The chief stewardess is a master of ceremonies on board, orchestrating the overall guest experience. There is great satisfaction in throwing a perfect party (guest trips can last up to several days and weeks) and with this responsibility also comes the pressure that every detail be perfect. This role is well suited for people that speak to large groups with confidence and enjoy the spotlight. In the quieter moments computer knowledge, administrative skills and some financial acumen are important.

Source: *U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, ** O*Net Online, ***Job Postings from CareerBuilder.com.

Essential Career Information

Job description and duties.

Yacht designers supervise and design the construction of luxury recreational watercraft. They plan ships in accordance with specifications that establish the basic size, weight and speed of a yacht. They design the waterlines and sectional curves of hulls to establish gravitational centers and buoyancy. Designers may also develop ship superstructures and interior spaces, including cargo holds and passenger compartments. They may work closely with marine engineers in order to develop specifications for propulsion systems, ventilation and heating systems, boiler room machinery and refrigeration equipment. As a designer, you might lead development teams in order to test prototypes and evaluate yacht designs.

Job Growth and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for naval architects and marine engineers was about $93,000 in May 2014. The top ten percent of these workers earned $147,000 or more, while the bottom ten percent earned less than $59,000. Between 2012 and 2022, employment in this field is expected to grow by 10%, which is about as fast as average among all occupations, according to the BLS.

Education and Licensure

In order to become a yacht designer, you typically need to have a bachelor's degree in an area such as naval architecture or marine engineering. In these programs, you can study topics in areas such as marine engineering, hydrodynamics, electrical systems and small craft design. These programs emphasize concepts in engineering and science, and they also provide students with a strong and necessary foundation in mathematical concepts, such as trigonometry and calculus. Some programs may allow you to focus your education in a specific area, such as sailing yachts.

Licensure may also be required for certain employment positions. Marine engineers and naval architects may take an examination offered by the U.S. Coast Guard in order to obtain a mariner's license, which can be obtained at several levels. A higher level of license can result in higher pay. The first grade of licensure is known as the 3rd Assistant License. With adequate experience and further testing, you may obtain a 2nd and a 1st Assistant License. The highest grade of licensure is titled Chief Assistant.

Useful Skills

Beyond education and licensure, there are some general skills that all naval architects should possess in order to ensure success in this field. Yacht designers may want to develop the following skills, concepts and talents:

  • A solid background in engineering, math and science
  • Skills in drafting, including knowledge of computer-aided drafting (CAD) software programs
  • The ability to work and communicate with other professionals, such as marine engineers
  • The ability to explain complex concepts and give instructions when interacting with professional teams
  • The ability to solve problems related to ship design while complying with the needs of clients

Job Postings from Real Employers

Employers in this field typically value bachelor's degrees in naval architecture and relevant work experience. Some employers may require you to hold licensure and be familiar with a variety of software applications. In order to get a better sense of the kinds of jobs available to naval architects, see the following examples of job postings found online during May 2012:

  • A company was hiring naval architects in Louisiana and Mississippi. Candidates needed a bachelor's degree in naval architecture, 2-5 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry and 8-12 years of professional engineering experience. Proficiency in a variety of software applications that are instrumental to naval architecture, such as AutoCAD and ASSET, is also important, as well as expected to have expertise in areas such as weight estimating, seakeeping prediction, deck equipment sizing and layout, computational fluid dynamics and hydrodynamic estimation.
  • A Washington company was looking for a naval architect with a bachelor's degree in naval architecture and 1-2 years of work experience. Other requirements included passing the Fundamentals in Engineering examination and proficiency with AutoCAD, GHS, Microsoft Word and Excel. Job duties included developing stability test procedures, overseeing inclining tests and providing lead engineer support on projects.
  • A company in Texas was seeking a naval architect who would plan the building process of vessels. This would include all steps, from the conceptual phase through the delivery of the final product. This employer expected candidates to be able to use CAD applications, prepare documentation on weight control and material management, and act as a consultant for clients who need engineering solutions and technical support.

How to Stand Out in the Field

Earn a graduate degree.

While earning a bachelor's degree, it may be helpful to attend a program that offers specialized courses in yacht or recreational watercraft design. You can also stand out by earning a graduate degree in naval architecture. In a graduate program, you can take more advanced courses in marine systems and structures and participate in a variety of research projects that may augment your skills and allow you to compete for a larger variety of jobs. According to O*Net Online, about 18% of all marine architects have master's degrees, so obtaining one could help you compete.

Get Certified by the American Boat and Yacht Council

The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) develops safety standards for the construction, design and maintenance of recreational boats. ABYC also offers a comprehensive education program that includes workshops, seminars and a Marine Technician Certification program. You can earn certification through the ABYC by attending their special certification class and taking their examination. These certifications remain valid for five years.

Alternative Career Paths

Mechanical engineer.

If you're interested in engineering concepts but you don't want to specialize in marine structures, then you may enjoy a career as a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineering is a broad discipline with many subspecialties. These professionals design, build, develop and test various mechanical devices, such as engines, tools and machines. In order to become a mechanical engineer, you need to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Employment positions that require more responsibilities may require a graduate degree. Mechanical engineers who offer services directly to the public must be licensed in every state. According to the BLS, in May 2011 the median annual wage in this field was about $79,000. The BLS reported that employment in this field is expected to grow by nine percent between 2010 and 2020, which is slower than average among all occupations.

Petroleum Engineer

If you are interested in marine technology, but want to specialize in developing and overseeing the drilling operations of oil rigs, then you may wish to become a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers design methods for extracting gas and oil from below the surface of the earth. They design equipment and develop ways to extract as much oil and gas as possible while keeping expenses at a minimum. They also ensure that all oil field equipment is operated, installed and maintained in a proper manner. In May 2011, the BLS reported that the median annual wage for petroleum engineers was about $122,000. Between 2010 and 2020, employment in this field is expected to grow by 17%, about as fast as average among all occupations according to the BLS.

These are the Yacht Interior Designers to Know

Designing a superyacht is a personal experience and involves making an overwhelming amount of choices.

By Sophie Killip

yacht interior designer salary

For those seasoned individuals who have experience chartering yachts , visiting friends’ yachts, sailing the high seas, or maybe even purchasing their first pre-designed yacht, the next thrill might come from building their own vessel. Although designing your own superyacht is a truly personal experience, it also involves making an overwhelming amount of choices. This is why the first step to building a new superyacht should always be to choose a designer to work with – and there are several yacht interior designers you can choose from.

Whether it’s considering how the internal spaces of your yacht will work, what furniture or materials are used, or even working out the external design for your new vessel, collaborating with a designer will make the process of creating your dream superyacht as stress-free and easy as possible. To help, Elite Traveler has created a list of yacht interior (and exterior, in some cases) designers that should be on your radar – and if you’re also on the lookout for a new yacht builder, why not discover our list of the best luxury yacht builders in the world ?

Winch Design

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with  Winch Design. Originally founded by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, at the time it was known as Andrew Winch Designs. It was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015 but has been one of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years. Winch Design’s yacht studio is now led by Jim Dixon and the team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects was the 260 ft M/Y Excellence , which shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen say was its “most challenging project to date”. Its owner worked closely with the design studio to create a yacht with interiors inspired by the “Floridian East Cost Deco” style and that felt both personal to him and welcoming to any guest on board. “ Excellence was a very exciting project to be involved with and [she] tested the team to their creative limits,” says senior partner, Ignacio Oliva-Vele.

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that Sorgiovanni decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio has also recently opened an office in Monaco in order to expand its design services to Europe.

Sorgiovanni believes it’s important to “keep one eye on the past” when designing projects, “in order to avoid making the same mistakes” as before. Previous yacht designs that he has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When Sorgiovanni is not working on a particular project, he is also traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Zaniz Studio

Yacht interior designer Zaniz Studio exterior of Luminosity

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s latest projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market last year for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1992 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from the city for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding for the sea. One of its latest projects was the 465 ft Nord (previously called Project Opus).

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Tillberg Design of Sweden

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Inside Putin's Palace: The $1.4 Billion-Dollar Compound

Russian president Putin has reportedly built himself a $1.4 billion fortress at the coast of the Black Sea.

Quick Links

A hidden fortress, amenities fit for the richest of men, putin denies the ownership.

A 2021 Russian documentary made by a Russian anti-corruption team has revealed a luxurious $1.4 billion estate  in Russia on the Black Sea. The film details an astonishingly large and opulent palace . And one critic is claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin is behind the construction of the billion-dollar estate.

Alex Navalny is a fierce Putin critic. He released the 113-minute documentary-style film earlier this year with the help of his anti-corruption team. The film alleges Putin and his billionaire friends secretly built the mansion using illicit funds.

Within 24 hours of its release, the video gained 20 million views. Within a week, 93 million had seen it, making it the activist’s most popular investigation.

“This is certainly not just a building. It is a symbol of the 20 years of Putin’s rule,” Navalny claims.

Analysis of financial documents reveals that the mansion cost almost 100 billion rubles, or about $1.3 billion. Money, he claims Putin funneled from various oligarch cronies. Navalny is calling the palace the world’s biggest bribe.

The investigation doesn’t rely on financial records alone. Navalny and his team have obtained detailed floor plans, drone footage, and interior photographs. The extravagant mansion is reportedly 39 times the size of Monaco .

The estate stands in Cape Idokopas, near the village of Praskoveevka. The palace is tucked away down a winding road on a thickly wooded mountainside overlooking Russia's Black Sea coast. The palace, surrounded by forest, sits on a block of land with a total area of 74 hectares.

Centered around a beautiful pearl-colored palace with an area of 190,500 square feet are many amazing amenities. Navalny's report describes that the grounds feature an arboretum, a greenhouse, an underground hockey rink, a church, an amphitheater, and a sculpture garden.

Near the main structure, there is a 260-foot bridge that leads to a 27,000-square-foot guest house.

Insider reports that the estate is also accessible by yacht and helicopter, as it features its own seaport and two helipads. Near the port, there is a special tunnel built into the seaside cliff to provide access to the beach. The tunnel includes a tasting room in the middle with the 'best possible view of the sea'.

Reporting suggests the architect who designed the ostentatious palace is Italian designer Lanfranco Cirillo. Cirillo has spent decades providing Moscow’s super-rich with villas and Italian-inspired designs.

"It's not overdone, but naturally it is rich, as it was supposed to be. And we used fantastic materials. I was proud of my job. It's very good 'Made in Italy',” the architect said of the palace.

Rich is also the term many Russians would use to describe the decor. Only the super-wealthy live in palaces featuring luxuries like those found in this. There is a private theater, a Las Vegas-style casino, an “aqua-discotheque” with a swim-up bar, a Turkish bath, a sauna, a cocktail lounge, a gym, A hookah bar, and staff quarters.

The 11-bedroom home features many living areas. There are also separate kitchens for meat and fish.

Among the additional areas are more than a dozen guest bedrooms near the master bedroom, which is spacious enough for a king. Navalny claims the master suite is nearly 2,800 square feet.

The home also features a wine cellar that holds wine produced from the grapes in the vineyard.

The furniture listed in the plans Navalny exposed are from Italian furniture companies Citterio, Pozzoli, and AB Italia, and the filmmaker has even managed to get prices for some of the items. These overstuffed chairs in the mansion’s 'room of entertaining games' cost the equivalent of $9,000 apiece. One leather sofa allegedly costs $28,000 , while an ornate table with a built-in bar goes for over $49,000.

In a rare rebuttal, Putin denied that he owns the billion-dollar palace, according to The Washington Post . “Nothing of what was indicated there as my property belongs either to me or my close relatives,” Putin said.

Though Putin dismissed Navalny’s video as 'boring', it spurred demonstrations across Russia earlier this year. Many protesters took to the street to chat, “Putin is a thief!”

The extent of Putin's wealth remains a mystery. The Russian president has not appeared on Bloomberg's and Forbes' rankings of the world's billionaires. However, at a 2017 Senate Judiciary Hearing, Putin critic and financier Bill Browder estimated the president "has accumulated $200 billion of ill-gotten gains  and described him as one of the richest men in the world."
