Limited-Time Offer : Access a FREE 10-Day IELTS Study Plan!

Writing essays is a crucial component of any coursework because it forces you to do things like clarify and organise ideas and information, analyse sources, and employ critical judgement, it improves knowledge and aids in the learning process. At school or at college, every student is required to write essays.

Well-organized essays will help you score a good band in the IELTS examination. Proper planning is the key to write good essays. You need to give yourself at least 10 minutes to frame the content before you start writing . The essay should contain 4-5 paragraphs and should be of  250 words or more. You have to grasp the central idea from the topic and try to explain it.

Below are some of the recently appeared topics with the sample answers which you can refer to:

Do you think that technological advancement has brought more harm than good?

The twentieth century has seen a vast development in the field of science and technology. This improvement in technology has also raised the standard of living of the people. But it has caused a lot of trouble to the environment. We need to understand its advantages and disadvantages to decide whether it has actually benefitted society.

On one side, we can say that technology has become more beneficial to society,  by facilitating easy communication. It has also improved the economic condition and transport facilities. Organizations have gone online. People are also benefitted through recent technologies like smartphones, laptops and also other electronic appliances. There are applications on smartphones such as “WhatsApp” which has replaced emails. We are able to get a lot of information at the click of a button.

On the other side, technology has certain drawbacks as well. Social connect has become less. There is software that is used to hack the data and there is no privacy for an individual. In a recent study, it is found that the students are neglecting their studies and end up getting poor grades due to recent technologies.

To conclude, we can say that there are more problems due to technological advancements than benefits.

Analysis of the structure of the essay:

Some people argue that technological inventions, such as smartphones, are making people socially less interactive. Discuss both views.

In the current era, you can see people spending more time on smartphones rather than socializing. Wherever you go, you can see people putting their heads down looking into their smartphones and not bothering about what is going on around them. This has become a new trend. As there are a lot of features that are available in smartphones, an individual is not able to stay away from it even for a second. Some features of smartphones are just like the personal computer and they provide a high level of entertainment and can be carried along wherever we go. This essay helps others to understand how smartphone technology impacts society.

The main advantage of a smartphone is that it has made communication easier and quicker. Now you can speak to any of your friends or relatives, in any part of the world. Not only that, but they can also share personal messages, photos, videos through social media.

Along with the benefits, there are also some adverse effects of smartphone addiction on society. The children are not socially active. They sit inside four walls playing games on smartphones and have distanced themselves from society. Even, adults are busy chatting with their friends on social networking sites and have become socially inactive. Even get-togethers have become less. People like to chat on social media more than talking face to face. Even if there are get-togethers, people will be busy with their smartphones instead of interacting with each other. Parents nowadays are busy with smartphones and they fail to attend to their children. Hence the children will be left alone.

To conclude, we can say that smartphones along with its advantages, have also increased the social gap and kept us far from each other.

Many things that used to be done at home by hands are now being done by machines. Discuss.

Technology is growing day by day. Many household works that were done manually earlier have been replaced by machines and can be completed automatically. This development has benefitted people a lot. This essay will explain how technology has helped people in different ways at home.

Man has invented many machines which can do most of the household work automatically such as; dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, the washing machine and so on. With the invention of these machines, women get a lot of leisure. And also this advancement has helped women in improving their standard of living. They will get more time to focus on their career.

Along with the advantages there are also some disadvantages that go with the situation. By the invention of different types of machinery, people are fully dependent on them. Previously, people used to do all the household work manually and stayed fit. But the advancement in technology has made people lazy. There is no physical involvement in household activities

To sum up, technology has made people more dependent on machines for household activities. Also, the advantage is that women can invest more time more on their careers and children rather than doing household chores.

The aspirants must practise writing various essay topics to prepare for IELTS writing task 2. Here is one sample essay on Information Technology, one of the popular essay topics for the IELTS writing task. Let us have a look at a sample essay on Information Technology.

IELTS Writing Task Essay on Information Technology

Today’s world is changing rapidly, and this change has occurred due to the evolution of information technology. Information technology influences our lives, and now it is dominating our home, leisure and work.

Though it is clear that Information technology has made our life easy and convenient, studies show that it has some adverse effects on human life. Information technology has an immense impact on data transmission within seconds from one corner of the world to the other. With the help of Information technology, studies get smoother.

During the pandemic, schools were closed, and the academic year of students was wasted. But with the aid of information technology, schools could conduct classes online. It also helped people to communicate with their loved ones instantly.

With time, technology has improved, and distance between humans has reduced. If a person has to stay away from their family for education or work, information technology helps them to keep in touch and talk to their loved ones at any time. It is seen that every field has developed significantly over the last few decades.

However, too much technology can be harmful to kids if they get addicted to it. They spend most of their time on mobiles instead of playing outside homes that will affect their health.

Information technology has advanced our lives, and it has enabled professionals to work remotely away from their offices. It has helped many working professionals. Information technology allows maintaining a balance between work and personal life. It has improved productivity and also reduced work-related stress. It has also reduced the operational cost of the company by making remote work possible.

Due to the evolution of technology, people are investing more time in work. Working for more hours will accelerate their professional growth. During this competitive age, working overtime helps them to stay in their job.

Thus it will help the companies to share a part of their profit with their employees by offering higher salaries. On the other hand, it is affecting their personal life. People are spending less time with their family members, and in turn, it increases stress levels and affects mental, physical and social health. It may lead to lifestyle diseases like High BP, diabetes, and even cardiac arrest.

Wrap-up the IELTS Writing Task Essay

Advancement in modern technology has helped people in working from their homes. Work from home has helped companies as employees have to arrange for their equipment, and investment in hardware and furniture has reduced. It will increase the profit of the organisation.

However, working from home at convenient hours saves time and increases their productivity. The huge advantage for employees is to save commuting time. The employees can save time and utilise it for other hobbies and get a perfect work-life balance.

To clear the IELTS exam, the aspirants must master English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills adequately. If the candidate gets a good score in essay topics in the writing task, it becomes easy for them to achieve a decent band score. Various coaching centres are preparing the students for these four skills to get their dream band score.

This model essay is on the topic of the effect of technology on the kinds of relationships we form. It’s a 2-part, or IELTS direct question essay.  It is taken from Cambridge IELTS 8 .

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? Has this become a positive or negative development?

I will start by taking you through my 4 Step Planning Approach . This will help you to understand the structure of my essay and the ideas in it. Then you can read my essay. Finally I have included a list of useful vocabulary in my essay.

I hope you find it useful!

IELTS Model Essay Technology Effect On Relationships

First, I will carefully plan the essay.

Step 1: Understand My Task

What is the topic about.

The topic is about how technology has changed the types of relationships people make .

The phrase “types of” is important – it is encouraging you to talk about connections between people , rather than just intimate relationships (e.g. boyfriend / girlfriend), i.e. about relationships in a general sense. I think you need to cover this aspect in order to get a Band 7 or higher.

What kind of technology has changed relationships? I suppose things like smartphone, the Internet and also apps on phones and computers.

What is the topic NOT about?

The task is NOT about how technology has changed communication (although this will probably come into your discussion). It’s about how it has changed relationships .

How should I respond?

My task is to answer the 2 questions, so I need to:

  • say how technology has affected relationships
  • say whether this is positive or negative

Reword the task

It’s often useful to re-word the task to make it simpler and clearer, so i could reword the task like this:

How has technology (computers, phones, apps) affected relationships? Is this good or bad?

Step 2: Decide My Position

So what do I think? What are my answers to these 2 questions? What are my main ideas? This should just be a quick step, but you will probably start to expand your ideas in this step.

How has technology affected relationships?

  • easier to stay in touch with people all over the world
  • you can have a following / audience of millions via social media

Is this positive or negative?

Generally positive.

Step 3: Expand My Ideas

Now I need to expand or develop my ideas . This is crucial if you are aiming for a Band 7 or higher in IELTS Writing Task 2 .

Step 4: Structure My Essay

  • smartphone apps like zoom, whatsapp and skype offer cheap or free communication that lets you text or call people on the other side of the world instantly
  • in the past, letters could take weeks and international phone calls were expensive
  • people on tiktok have built following of hundreds of thousands

Generally positive:

  • Can stay in touch with family, friends, former colleagues easily, so can sustain close relationships
  • People build relationships with wider network of people, meaning access to greater social capital
  • But a lot of these relationships quite tenuous and fleeting

So that’s my plan. It’s quite detailed…which means that when I write I can focus on my language, not my ideas.

Technology has changed the kinds of relationships people make between each other in significant ways over the last twenty years. This essay will consider two of these changes and whether or not these have had positive repercussions.

One of the major impacts of technology is that it has enabled us to easily stay in touch with friends and family on the other side of the world. Thirty years ago, if you wanted to communicate with a friend or relative, you would either have written a letter (which could have taken weeks to arrive) or made an expensive international phone call. Today, we can simply send a text message on WhatsApp or call them on Zoom. These technologies are either free or low-cost, and instantaneous. So it makes maintaining relationships over a long distance much easier.

Another big change is that social media has made it possible for us to build a relationship with thousands and sometimes millions of people. Some people on TikTok, for example, have quickly built an audience of millions and most people on Facebook have hundreds of friends at least. This kind of audience-style relationship was rare before the advent of social media.

I think that in general, these changes have been positive. It is now easy to maintain and build relationships with relatives, friends and work colleagues that you may previously have lost contact with. And it’s also possible to build a wider social network of people which you can tap into for advice and support. Access to this pool of social capital was almost impossible in the past.

However, it is also true that many of these relationships, especially those on social media, can be fleeting and tenuous. Is a Facebook “friend” really a friend or just a passing acquaintance? It’s therefore important that people don’t allow such relationships to displace close, nurturing friendships.

On the whole though, technology’s affect on our ability to stay in touch with people all over the world and to access a wider range of people has been positive.

Common IELTS Topics: Technology

Posted by David S. Wills | Nov 13, 2017 | IELTS Tips , Listening , Reading , Speaking , Writing | 2

Common IELTS Topics: Technology

Technology is one of the most common IELTS topics because it can come up in any part of the exam. Furthermore, technology is a part of our daily lives and thus an absolutely necessary topic in which to be fluent. So, let’s look at how it may come up in the IELTS exam and what technology vocabulary we need to learn.

Technology in IELTS Speaking

There are lots of possible questions you may be asked about technology in the IELTS speaking exam. Here are some.

  • How often do you use the Internet?
  • How much time do you spend using a computer at work or at home?
  • Do you enjoy using technology?
  • Do you own a computer?
  • What do you mainly use a computer for?
  • Do you use the Internet for your studies?
  • Has the internet made your job / studies easier?
  • Have you ever taken a course to improve your computer skills?
  • Do you use any gadgets on a daily basis?
  • Which device do you prefer to use for browsing the internet?

You may be asked to describe a technology you often use or a kind of gadget. In one surprising cue card, candidates were asked to describe a time when they couldn’t use a phone! Here’s my sample answer for that:

  • What kind of technological developments have made the biggest impact on our lives?
  • Do you think people rely too much on modern technology?
  • Do you think we need to know much about computers?
  • How do computers affect our everyday life?
  • Do you agree that some people use technology for communication too much?
  • Do computers make it much easier to study?
  • Would you agree that the rapid development of digital technology has had a positive impact on the world of work?
  • What is the most important piece of technology in our lives?
  • How effective is the use of computers in the classroom?
  • Do you think that the rate of technological expansion will slow down in the years to come?
  • What do you think are the important things people need to learn when they start using computers?
  • Do you think men and women view technological devices differently?

Answering any of these questions gives you a chance to show off your technology vocabulary, which we shall look at in the next section.

Technology Vocabulary

It is really important that IELTS candidates know a lot of technology vocabulary. However, this is where textbooks often fail us. The vocabulary used to describe technology changes almost as quickly as technology itself!

Case in point: A few years ago, I was teaching at a university in China and all the textbooks had things like:

  • cassette tape
  • surfing the net

However, this is all really old fashioned! Whilst it might be useful to know these words and phrases, they are unlikely to be things you will talk about in the IELTS speaking test. After all, some of these are practically ancient by now.

essay on technology for ielts

It’s important then to keep on top of relatively new developments. you don’t need to be an expert in computer studies or anything, but you should know some common terms for talking about technology in daily life:

  • instant messaging

You should be able to talk about social media, using the most common words and phrases there:

  • friend/unfriend

All of these will help you to give better answers when talking about technology or technology-related subjects in your IELTS speaking test.

Here’s a whole video about technology vocabulary:

Technology in IELTS Writing

Technology could appear in either part of the IELTS writing exam but it is more likely to come up in task 2. Here are some example questions:

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology. In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships that people make? Has this been a positive or negative development? * When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? * Some people argue that technological inventions, such as smartphones, are making people less socially active. Do you agree or disagree?

Be careful when answering these questions. Much of the technology vocabulary you learn online (including the video above) is a bit informal. In particular, verbs relating to social media can be quite inappropriate for a formal essay. It is not bad English, but you may find yourself marked down for not using formal enough language.

Technology for IELTS Listening

Of course, it is very possible that your IELTS listening exam could contain information about technology. It is, however, unlikely to be very specialised and you would only need to know some quite basic language. Here are some examples of IELTS technology topics in the listening exam .

Technology for IELTS Reading

Technology is an incredibly common topic in the reading exam. Here, a good vocabulary for technology would definitely come in handy.

Here are some example tests you can see on other websites:

  • Technology & Crime
  • Hard Disk Technology
  • Is Science Dangerous?
  • Art & Technology

Modern Technology Is Changing Our World | Band 9 To What Extent Agree Or Disagree IELTS Essay Sample

by Manjusha Nambiar · October 3, 2021

Modern technology is changing our world. This has advantages such as bringing people closer together through communication. It also has disadvantages such as destroying the differences between cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Here is a band 9 IELTS essay on this topic. Need help with IELTS writing? Get your IELTS essays, letters and reports corrected by me.

Band 9 IELTS essay sample

Technology has certainly brought people closer by making geographical boundaries irrelevant. Some people argue that this closeness is destroying cultural identities and making all nations look similar. I agree with this view to a great extent. People everywhere now wear the same kind of clothes and eat the same food.

Cultural identities are fast disappearing. By simply looking at the costume of a person, it is no longer possible to tell an Indian from an American or an African. Everyone everywhere now wears the same outfits. Likewise, they eat the same food. They read the same books, listen to the same music and watch the same movies. This similarity has certainly fostered better understanding among people of different nations. It has boosted trade and tourism. It has brought nations closer. On the down side, it has also destroyed cultural differences.

The food we eat, the costumes we wear, the festivals we celebrate and the languages we speak are all closely linked to our culture. They are our cultural identity. When people everywhere follow the same lifestyle, this cultural identity is lost. This is certainly a downside of the proliferation of technology. The worst affected by this development are the young generation. They are no longer familiar with their native culture. Many of them even show total disdain for the culture and lifestyle of their grandparents. This also hurts their national pride.

In conclusion, technology not only brought people closer but also made them all look, talk, act and behave alike. Hence, I totally agree with the argument that modern technology is annihilating cultural differences.

Communication Technology Essay

This Communication Technology Essay is about how relationships have been impacted. This is the question:

Nowadays, the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make?

Is this a positive or negative development?

Understanding the Task

You should be able to see that there are two parts that need to be answered:

The first part is about general effects and the second part is asking for your opinion about this.

So it doesn't easily fit into an essay 'type'.

Don't worry about this. If you have learned to recognize different types of essay but you find one that does not seem to fit any, just focus on working out exactly what you are being asked.

So in this one you have to brainstorm some ideas about the way relationships have changed.

Stating your Opinion

For the second part you need to decide if it is positive or negative, or both.

Choosing one side and writing about it is probably the simplest way to approach it. In other words:

  • Body 1: The way relationships have changed
  • Body 2: The negative impacts (or positive)

Although it says ' positive or negative ', it's YOUR opinion, so if you decide it is both it is fine to say this as long as you  make it clear .

In this model Communication Technology Essay, the writer has stated that it is both positive and negative.

  • Body 1: The way relationships have changed (positive)
  • Body 2: The negative impacts

When you take a look at the model answer, you'll see the writer has discussed the new types of relationships and labelled them as positive, but then gone on to look at the negative sides.

essay on technology for ielts

There are usually several ways you can approach and organize an essay, not just one. As long as it is coherent and answers the question, that is fine.

Now take a look at the model answer and the comments below.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

It is evident that technology has transformed the ways of communication and influenced relationships in a variety of ways. In my opinion, there are both positive and negative effects of this.

The principal way in which relationships have been affected is that they tend to be at a distance rather than face-to-face. The advent of the internet has made it easy for business owners to communicate across the world, with remote job opportunities one call away. Online educational programs are available for people residing in different countries, and it is no longer a dream to attend live classes from the comfortable environment of a home. Not only this, the social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have revolutionized relationships, be it making online friendships with people from other countries or staying in touch with loved ones. Based on this perspective, technology has influenced relationships in a positive way.

However, despite these advances, the quality of interaction has significantly declined in several respects. If people are developing most of their relationships online, this means that they may also have less fact-to-face contact. This kind of contact on a personal level is important for human beings to feel wanted and a part of society. This may be a particular problem for children's social development as they used to be seen playing out on the streets but are now too often indoors. Technology can also mean people are detached from what is going on around them even when they are out, as can be seen by the many people staring into their mobile phones as they travel or walk around.

In conclusion, technology has brought some positive development in the ways people interact with each other. However, there are also some negative impacts of technology on the types of relationships people make.

(299 Words)

This Communication Technology Essay would get a good score for the following reasons.

It fully answers the question, setting out the way the types of relationships people make have changed (they tend to be ' online ') and then expanding on this by giving examples.

A balanced opinion is also clearly explained, with the impacts in the first body paragraph seen to be positive, and the second body paragraph dedicated to explaining the negative points.

The essay is also clearly organised and coherent, with the opinion clearly stated and the body paragraphs clearly each focused on one central idea.

There is also good vocabulary used and good collocations. For example:

  • advent of the internet
  • remote job opportunities
  • social platforms
  • revolutionized relationships
  • people are detached from

The grammar shows accuracy and a wide range of structures are used.
