Online Shopping Essay

500+ words online shopping essay.

The trend of online shopping has increased in recent times with the increase of e-commerce and digital technology. With just a single click, you can shop for everything by sitting at your home as per your choice, convenience and budget. This essay on online shopping will help students learn about the pros and cons of online shopping. We have also compiled a list of CBSE Essays on different topics to help them improve their essay-writing skills. These essays will also help them improve their scores on the English exam.

What Does Online Shopping Mean?

Online shopping is the activity of buying products and services over the internet using a web browser or mobile app. It means buyers have to go online to reach a seller’s website and then select the product they want to purchase. The buyer can pay for the goods and services either online with a credit or debit card or upon delivery. Online shopping sites are also known by many other names such as e-shop, e-web-store, e-store, internet shop, web-store, web-shop, virtual store and online store. An online shop creates a physical analogy for buying products or services. Some of the famous online retailing corporations which facilitate the experience of online shopping are Amazon, eBay, Flipkart, Myntra, etc.

Online shopping is a growing area of the digital world and technology. Establishing a store on the Internet gives various options to consumers. With the growth of online shopping, most businesses have started selling their products online. Now, just having physical stores is not enough in this fast-paced world. Having online store interfaces for consumers has also become essential for running a business in the current scenario.

Benefits of Online Shopping

There are numerous advantages of online shopping. People feel more convenient while shopping online. They can shop from anywhere at their own convenient time through easy and safe payment methods. Online shopping has empowered consumers with various advantages such as convenience and time-saving, lower search costs, better product selection, lower prices, etc. One of the biggest benefits of online shopping is that you can buy the items you want with just a single click. Online stores are open 24 hours a day and are accessible from any location with an internet connection.

Online stores carry more variations and provide more varieties of a product as compared to traditional stores. This is because online stores don’t need to attractively display their items on shelves, and they can keep a larger amount of inventory on hand. They might also have small amounts of each item since they don’t need to display them and can order more from their supplier as needed.

Online shops tend to provide more information about items for sale than you would get in a physical store. Product descriptions most often include a description from the manufacturer, another description from the vendor, specific technical and size details, reviews from professional magazines and journals, and reviews from people who have bought the product. Having all this information available when you are considering a purchase makes you a more informed consumer without having to perform extra research by yourself.

Online stores are not burdened by the costs of running a physical store, such as the rent of the physical premises and wages of sales staff. The cost savings by online stores lead to lower pricing on the internet, passing on cost savings to shoppers. The internet encourages online vendors to compete with one another by lowering prices.

Disadvantages of Online Shopping

The benefits of shopping online also come with potential risks and dangers. When you shop online, you can’t touch or try out the product. You have to depend upon product pictures only. You can’t buy the product instantly. If you don’t get the product in hand immediately after payment, you have to wait for delivery, which can take days to weeks. There is no guarantee that you will get the product in its original shape; it might get damaged on the way. Sometimes, the product is very different from the pictures and description due to various reasons and also has poor quality. If, after receiving the package, expectations weren’t met, you need to go through a returns process which can be time-consuming. Apart from these, there is also a chance of security threats from online shopping. If the site is not secured, you have a risk of losing your card information.

Online shopping is one of the convenient ways of purchasing different products. However, there are some products which are better if they are purchased from physical stores. So, in the future, we can expect online stores to improve their technology, making way for a much easier and faster shopping experience.

Essay on Shopping with My Mother:

Shopping with my mother is always an interesting and exciting experience. As a child, I used to accompany her every time she would go out to buy groceries or clothes. It was our special bonding time, where we would talk about anything and everything while browsing through the aisles of the supermarket or trying on different outfits at the mall.

One of my favorite parts was watching my mother haggle with the shopkeepers, trying to get the best deals and bargains. It was like a game for her, and I loved seeing her win.

But as I grew older, shopping with my mother took on a different meaning. It became less about buying things and more about spending quality time together. We would still talk and laugh, but now it was about deeper conversations and understanding each other’s perspectives.

My mother would also give me little shopping tips and tricks, teaching me how to be a smart and responsible shopper. She taught me the importance of budgeting and only buying what we really needed.

Even now, as an adult, I still love going shopping with my mother. It may not be as frequent as before, but it’s still a cherished tradition that I hope to continue for many years to come. It’s not just about the material things we buy, but the memories and moments we create together while shopping. And that is something truly priceless.

So, no matter how old I get, I will always look forward to going shopping with my mother. So, these were some interesting experiences that I have shared with my mother while we went shopping. But, going shopping with your mother is not just about spending quality time together or buying things, it also teaches us many life lessons.

From my mother’s bargaining skills, I learned the importance of being confident and standing up for yourself. She showed me that a little persistence can go a long way in getting what you want. And from her budgeting tips, I learned to be responsible and wise with my money.

But most importantly, shopping with my mother taught me the value of family and the importance of cherishing every moment spent together. As we get caught up in our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook these simple yet precious moments. But when we go shopping together, all distractions and worries fade away, and we are just two individuals enjoying each other’s company.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s rare to have such moments of quality time with loved ones. So, I’m grateful for every shopping trip I’ve had with my mother and look forward to making more beautiful memories in the future.

It may seem like a mundane activity to some, but for me, shopping with my mother will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s not just about the things we buy, but the love and connection we share while doing so. And that is something I will always cherish.

Essay about Shopping Habits:

Shopping is a common activity that almost everyone engages in. Some people shop as a form of leisure, while others do it out of necessity. Regardless of the reason, shopping has become deeply ingrained in our daily lives.

In today’s fast-paced world, consumers are constantly bombarded with advertisements and new products to purchase. This has led to an increase in impulsive buying and an overabundance of material possessions. As a result, many people have developed a habit of mindless shopping, often buying things they don’t need or can’t afford.

This type of shopping habit can have negative consequences not only on an individual’s financial well-being but also on the environment. The constant production and consumption of goods contribute to pollution and waste, which in turn harms our planet.

To break this habit, it is important to become more mindful of our shopping behavior. This can include creating a budget and sticking to it, making a list before going shopping, and questioning whether we really need an item before purchasing it. It’s also important to consider the ethical and environmental impact of our purchases.

By being more aware of our shopping habits and making conscious choices, we can not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Additionally, by reducing mindless consumption, we can learn to appreciate the things we have and find happiness in experiences rather than material possessions.

Shopping should be a purposeful and intentional activity, not just another mindless task on our to-do list. So the next time you go shopping, remember to shop mindfully and make choices that benefit both yourself and the world around you. So let’s all start breaking our shopping habits and strive towards a more conscious and sustainable future. Let’s make every purchase count.

Finally, it is important to note that breaking a habit takes time and effort. It won’t happen overnight, but with persistence and determination, we can all develop healthier shopping habits.

So let’s continue to educate ourselves on the impact of our consumerism and make small changes in our daily lives that will lead to a larger positive impact on society and the environment. Shopping is inevitable, but how we choose to shop can make all the difference.

Shopping Online vs. Shopping at a Mall

In today’s constantly developing world, the idea of online shopping is not new. People like to buy goods and services online to save time or obtain financial benefits. The investigation by Dautovic (2019) shows that “95% of all purchases will be made online by 2040” (para. 6). Recently, the prospects of real stores have become more uncertain, while people use modern tablets, smartphones, and computers for online shopping worldwide. However, the debates about the worth of online shopping and shopping at a mall continue to grow, identifying new benefits and shortages of these practices. Although the benefits of online shopping like nonstop services, geographical limitlessness, and affordable prices, and traditional shopping like interaction, physical presence, and no delivery concerns are evident, the threats of cheating, dependence, infections, and inequality cannot be ignored.

Millions of people prefer online shopping because of the possibility to make purchases 24/7 and choose products from different parts of the world at reasonable prices. The representatives of different age groups claim that it is impossible to get away from the Internet or social media for shopping. It does not matter what time is now, websites and different online platforms are available day and night. There is no need to stay dependent on the working hours of managers but ask for help anytime. Besides, online customers can choose a good from different parts of the world and be sure to have it delivered to the doorstep. There is no need to find a parking spot before Christmas, stand in a long queue, or leave home when it rains. For example, Americans observe available offers, compare options, and purchase everything online to save their time and nerves. Finally, lower rent prices and no wages and insurances lead to a price decrease. Business owners are not bothered by human resource issues, and consumers enjoy cheapness and quality. All these financial, geographical, and organizational opportunities prove the benefits of online shopping.

At the same time, certain arguments in favor of traditional shopping, including interaction, physical presence, and real-time reach, cannot be ignored. Instead of spending life in front of computers or smartphones and clicking online options, it is high time to think about the worth of human relationships. Shopping at a mall is a great chance to interact with people and check all products that could be purchased. Traditional customer service may be attractive and helpful because a shop assistant is always present in person and ready to consult a buyer. Giving advice on goods, a salesperson is an expert in the chosen market field, and, therefore, these recommendations turn out to be trustworthy. People demonstrate their desire to but something only after they touch, smell, or try it. Physical presence is a crucial element of shopping, and it is a key element of a traditional method. Finally, shopping at a mall is usually faster because a customer comes to the store and buys the product in a moment, whereas online shopping delivery takes time and causes problems sometimes. Real communication and cooperation create the main advantage of traditional shopping today.

As well as any human activity and achievement, online shopping has its price and certain drawbacks. One of the most evident examples is the growth of Internet scams. All online purchases are developed via websites, apps, and social media. Despite the fact that many policies and security measures are taken, the likelihood of cheating is still widely spread online. There is a threat of addressing the wrong person for help and spending money without getting a good or service in turn. Therefore, customers should investigate databases and try to choose official online stores with high ratings to protect themselves against any possible swindle. At the same time, online shopping unfavorably becomes a hobby, as well as a habit. A constant flow of commercial advertisement makes Americans dependent on available opportunities and enhances spending money, even if a person does not plan a purchase. In this modern technology era, smartphones collect personal data and analyze populations in order to offer what can be interesting or necessary in regard to age, geographical location, or interests. Although online shopping attracts people’s attention, its threats and disadvantages have to be identified and eliminated.

Traditional shopping may be a perfect option for many customers, but its dangers due to the pandemic crisis and social inequalities must be learned. Today, the COVID-19 situation makes shopping at malls a real threat to human health and even life. Online shopping turns out to be a necessity because of self-isolation and avoidance of direct contact. Traditional shopping becomes a challenge for business as people stop visiting public places and are afraid of getting a virus. Many salespersons try to create appropriate shopping conditions and protect their customers without addressing to digital technologies. However, the possibility of being infected while making a purchase at a mall is a serious threat of traditional shopping.

In general, the advantages and disadvantages of online and traditional shopping prove that both practices are not perfect today. On the one hand, it is beneficial to buy products online because of 24/7 services, low prices, and worldwide accessibility. Tradition shopping attracts attention from physical presence, cooperation, and delivery independence. However, online fraud, real-life infections, and uncontrollable shopping habits are threats that have to be recognized. It is a personal choice either to buy online or at the nearest store, but awareness of existing pros and cons is a contribution that cannot be neglected.

Compare and Contrast Essay: Online Shopping vs. In-Person Shopping

Over the recent year shopping has taken two turns, the have the most classic form in person shopping and online shopping. They may be similar in their basics but online shopping and in person shopping are different based on the experience, time consumption, and the variety and availability of the items. They may be but the environment changes the situation a person is in and the interaction one has go through home or in an actual store.

Experience is a major component in shopping be it experience with the way a shop or way a website is set up. Amazon and target are two good examples in the difference between online and in person. While shopping in amazon.com consumers can expect to find almost anything with ease and minimal problems, but there can be other factors that can lead to problems. For example, consumers internet can be slow, or their phones could be cut off because they forgot to pay their bill. In person shopping does not have problem with slow internet or forgotten phone bills, any shopper can browse and find what they need or finds something that they might have needed but forgot. But in person shopping also has their downside for instance a shopper may forget the list of items they need or run into other fellow customer that will bother them believing them to be an associate of the store. In the end online shopping experience has a better impact on the shopper.

Another component is time consumption. Many shoppers are workers as well and need to organize their day to be early to their jobs and have time for their shopping for home necessity. Online shopping is time consuming but can be controlled because it can be done from anywhere. A consumer can be at home shopping and getting ready for work and still make it in time. But of course, there are consumer that get stuck and stay online shopping locked onto their screen looking for items they need or just want. In person shopping is good because you can browse on your way to work early in the morning and get your necessities and leave easily. But there is the possibility of getting stuck in traffic. Traffic can happen at any given time and a shopper can shop and then find out they are stuck and would be late for work. Given the time consumption of each online shopping comes to the top for less time consumption because traffic wouldn’t faze it at all.

Lastly it comes down to variety and availability. Variety and availability brings in more consumer to look and buy for items they need. Online shopping can have variety to the max. You have many shops at your disposal and can move to each site with ease. The chance of online shops to not have the product are low and if they don’t have what a consumer need then their other websites. With shopping in person, the chance of items being out of stock are higher than online. The shopper then must leave and go to another store where they may or may not have the item they need. In online shopping a consumer can find almost exactly what they need no problem but in person shopping chance are almost less than half of online shopping making online shopping more convenient.

In the grand finally of online shopping and in person shopping consumers can have better experiences online shopping. Time consumption would go in favor for online because of its flexibility of location and speed of looking for items. For variety and availability online shopping come out as more favorable.

Essay on Online Shopping for Students in English | 500 Words Essay

December 20, 2020 by Sandeep

Essay on Online Shopping: Buying things on the internet is termed as online shopping. E-commerce has changed the way businesses are conducted, and retailers are selling goods and services over the internet and making high profits. Company sites, shopping portals and e-auction sites are very popular with customers. Online shopping also delivers goods at our doorstep with necessary charges. It saves a lot of time, money, and effort and avoids visiting the stores physically to purchase commodities.

Essay on Online Shopping 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Online Shopping Essay in English, suitable for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Online shopping is a process in the form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to buy goods and services over the internet using a browser. It is also called as business to business online shopping. People can surf several web stores which offer a variety of products online from the comfort of the house. Shopping can be done through desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones etc. The most popular among the online stores are Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, and Myntra.

The concept of online shopping was first introduced by Michael Aldrich in 1980. In March he started Redifon’s Office Revolution, which permitted consumers, agents, distributors and suppliers to be connected online. By using videotex technology, he designed, installed, manufactured, sold and supported many online shopping systems. The first-ever shopping store name was Tesco store.

As online shopping is gaining popularity rapidly, e-retailers have managed to segregate customers and target them accordingly. There are deal hunters who always seek discounts and offers and then buy a product. Such customers always try to shop during festivals. Then there are brand buffs that prefer a particular quality brand. These types of shoppers are not price-sensitive and buy a particular brand, even at a high price.

Other ones are the wish listers who keep on scrolling, searching, selecting and adding the products to the wishing list to buy them later. They keep on postponing their purchase for many reasons. The most special ones are the shopaholics who don’t care about the discounts, offers or whatsoever as they keep buying all-round the year and are still not satisfied and keep waiting for new arrivals.

Advantages of Online Shopping

Most online shopping stores offer lower prices as compared to offline stores. They also provide a great bargain deal and save more money . Price comparison is hassle-free and quick. Due to such low prices, more consumers get engaged in online shopping as don’t have to shell out extra money. The introduction of the discount system has brought great relief to consumers, especially to savvy shoppers who get motivated to buy more during discounts.

An online store is a platform for diversity. This means that it supplies goods with many varieties. Customers can choose and select from abundance as they find numerous options which suit their requirement and budget. From kids to adults there is variety in large numbers. The stores are open 24/7, which makes a purchase as easy as ABC. Consumers who are busy and are unable to visit offline stores can buy at night. It can be bought at any time of the day.

By one click you can make the purchase, pay online or through cash on delivery system and also gets the product delivered to your doorstep. The system of tracking order enables people to know the status of their product through shipping details and exact arrival date. Furthermore, if the received product is defective, damaged or wrong in size, it can also be returned easily without following long formalities.

Disadvantages of Online Shopping

When it comes to electronics and clothes, customers find online shopping redundant as they cannot touch them and try them on to fit their perfect size. On some online stores, improper inventory management and long duration result in a delay of the product. Though selection, buying and paying is simple, but the product to arrive at your doorstep takes one to two weeks. The offline showroom sales attendant provides personal attention and guides us to choose the perfect one. Also, the service to speak to the sales representatives at times proves faulty as the lines seem to be busy all the time.

There is no facility to touch and feel and to examine the product closely. The images shown are sometimes misleading. The colour, size and appearance may differ in reality. After receiving the package, the product is broken, and you cannot return to the delivery agent unless you place a return request. Sometimes the product ordered never arrives, and a person will be exhausted in trying to reach the customer care and getting his/her problem solved. If the package is left with the neighbour because the customer is not at home, then there is a higher chance of stealing.

Shopping and services essay

Cudzie jazyky » angličtina, 13. shopping and services.

Obchod a služby

A shop is a place where we can buy things, where things are sold. Shopping is an act of choosing and buying products in order to use them.

SHOPPING FACILITIES – obchodné zariadenia 1. A shopping centre/mall is a large building with many smaller shops in it. Shopping centres offer many additional services – there are banks, post offices, travel agencies, sometimes a swimming pool, cafés, restaurants and cinemas and so on.

2. Department store. A department store is a large store divided into several big sections. Each section sells different types of things, for example: clothes, furniture, household appliances and so on. It has a car park and is situated in bigger cities and towns. Some of them are open non-stop. Shopping in a department store has many advantages: you can buy everything in one place. They usually offer cheaper products and they often offer sales. You can use a big shopping trolley to take your things to your car.

3. Supermarkets are usually situated in cities and towns. People mostly go to the supermarket to buy food and drinks. It is smaller than a department store and usually offers fewer goods. It has longer opening hours than small shops.

4. Small shops/ corner shops usually have shorter open hours than supermarkets, department stores and shopping centres. Small shops that usually sell food we call groceries and they are usually situated in small towns or villages. Other corner shops can sell different things: you can buy books in a bookshop, get shoes in a shoe shop etc. People working in a shop are shop assistants. They sell things and serve customers. Shop assistants in small villages and towns usually know their customers personally.

5. Markets are really popular today. Many people prefer to buy fresh fruit and vegetables or fish food at a market. Markets are popular because of their special atmosphere – they are noisy, overcrowded but people can walk from stall to stall, they can touch and taste products and talk to the salesmen. In Slovakia, products bought in markets are often more expensive than products bought in shops and supermarkets.

SERVICES - služby When we do the shopping we usually buy products that we use or consume. Services sell the public needs. We do not pay only for products, but for the helping activities people do for us. Services are often organized by the government or a private company. Post office is a national organization in many countries that is responsible for collecting and delivering letters, post cards and packages.

Banks are organizations, that provide various financial services, for example, as well as keeping or lending money, we can put our money into a bank account. Each bank also has an ATM (automated teller machine) where we can withdraw our money if we need cash.

The police are an official organization; whose job is to keep people safe. They solve crimes, car crashes, and vandalism.

Petrol stations are places at the side of the road where you can buy petrol, gas or oil.

JOBS IN SERVICES – zamestnania v službách Au-pair is the person who takes care of children, gardeners care about your garden, window cleaners usually clean the office buildings, electricians come when you have problem with electricity or, when you build a house, they come to install cables. Hairdressers work in salons or they come to your home to colour or cut your hair. There are big companies you can pay for complex services including repairman, painters and decorators, plumbers, domestic cleaners (called „daily helps “) and child-minders (women who look after children during the day while the parents are at work) also often advertise their services in this way. Services are also advertised in the „classified ads “section in local newspapers etc.

Many services can be ordered by telephone and you can find them in phone book/directory in English called the “Yellow Pages “. It displays the list of firms according to the services they provide. You can order a cooked meal to be delivered from a Chinese restaurant or a pizza restaurant. If you want to send someone a present, you can ask for chocolates, flowers, or a bottle of wine to be delivered. Many of these delivery services in foreign countries use motorcycles. Shops and offices in town centres provide services such as dry cleaning, shoe repairs, photocopying and the use of fax machines. In launderettes you can wash and dry clothes in coin-operated machines. There are estate agencies for buying and selling houses, letting agencies for finding rented accommodation and employment agencies for finding a job. Some employment agencies specialize in a particular kind of job, for example hotel services.

ADVERTISEMENT-COMMERCIAL - reklama Advertising is a public promotion of some product or service which results in profit from customers who buy /purchase products. Street billboards, catchy jingles on TV and radio, pictures in magazines and newspapers, social networks and everywhere. Many celebrities are paid to promote products.

All kinds of advertisement try to catch our attention and introduce new products and ideas. Advertisers make us believe we can realise our ambitions quickly and easily, only if we buy their product. So, advertisers want us to spend money on their products. They want us to make us believe that their product meets our needs. But there are also advantages. Advertising is informative, it increases demand, stimulates industry and keeps prices down. When advertisers want to create successful advertisement, they use methods that help to sell new products: Famous or well-known people promote certain products by saying that they use these products. Average people in everyday situations are often shown using a certain product. Advertising says that everybody buys a certain product. Advertising shows a very special idea, feeling, person, or situation. It can transfer your good feelings to the product. “Jingles” are tunes created for commercials that stick in your head and you hum the melody over and over, hopefully hypnotizing you into buying the products.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING – vianočné nakupovanie Some people always do their shopping before Christmas because they don’t like when the shops are full of people and everybody is in a hurry. People are often nervous. It is stressful to do Christmas shopping a week before Christmas.

CATALOGUE AND ONLINE SHOPPING – nakupovanie online a z katalógu The advantages of buying things from a catalogue are: You don’t have to go to the shop. You can do the shopping at home. There is a wider choice of goods. The disadvantages are: You can’t try the things on. You can’t touch the things to see what material they are made of. It is more difficult and more expensive to return the goods if you don’t like it because you have to pay for postage.

Drawbacks and Benefits of Online Shopping Essay

Introduction, benefits of online shopping, drawbacks of online shopping.

Online shopping is a form of e-commerce that involves the use of internet-connected computer hardware and credit cards. The user also needs to have a secure password that will enable him or her to access the services. Online shoppers are required to have different passwords for different shopping websites.

The process of online shopping involves opening the site where one prefers shopping, selecting the good or service needed by clicking on the specific item that the shopper wants, and then clicking on the ‘add to basket’ portal. After the item is moved, the buyer then clicks the stop button. Before entering money details, the customer ensures that the website uses ‘https’ and not ‘http’.

Such a browser assures the user that the site is secure in terms of handling money. The user then enters his or her credit or debit card particulars on the site. The site will display some verification characters for the user to enter. These ‘Captcha” details verify that the machine is being operated by a person and not a fraudulent software or robot.

After the buyer has completed entering the required details on the website as prompted, he or she then waits for the goods or services to be delivered to his or her authorised points of delivery. With this hint in mind concerning online shopping, the information given so far is enough to declare the shopping strategy as both risky and advantageous. The study dwells on proving this claim.

One of the benefits of online shopping is that it makes the customer have quick access to items that are identical regardless of where he or she does the shopping for them. For example, one is able to access items such as certain types of clothes, Compact Discs (CDs), books, cookeries, and even electronics. The only major requirements that the buyer should ensure that he or she has are the particulars of the item, which he or she verifies when it is delivered.

Bonsu and Darmody (2008, p. 356) argue that online shopping enables people to save energy that could have been used to travel to the shopping malls or to the markets for certain items. Online shopping is particularly advantageous, when the item that the buyer wants is similar in various shopping points. Such an item does not require the buyer to select a particular item from a variety of closely related or similar items.

For example, if it is a particular book by Shakespeare for instance, the book is not likely to be different in terms of price from one shop to another in a certain market region. With such items, the buyer can comfortably do online shopping. Constaninides (2004, p. 115) reveals that online shopping is also beneficial because it saves time.

Most of the online shopping service providers offer free delivery of services to their customers for goods of a specific value. The buyer is able to save a lot of time, which he or she can spend doing other beneficial activities. The time that shoppers spend in travelling, selecting, packing, and carrying the items is reduced. Therefore, online services such as shopping enhance efficiency.

According to Bonsu and Darmody (2008, p. 356), online shopping is also beneficial to customers in that they can obtain commodities that are not easily accessible due to distance and complexity of specificity. Some items that customers may need are very specific in nature.

Hence, identifying and selecting them physically in the shelves of the supermarket may be tedious. For example, electronic gadgets have specific codes that may easily confuse customers who have no previous experience in them. Choosing the specific item from a variety of others may attract confusion and hence a probable wrong choice of what the client requires.

In some instances, goods or services are not available in the proximity of the customer. In such cases, online customer can search through the websites and identify the item from far since delivery is guaranteed. For example, a customer may want to buy a certain model of a car that is not available in his or her country. Sometimes the buyer may not know where to get a certain item.

However, the buyer can access such goods and services through online advertising that the sellers offer. Online shopping has also enabled sellers to publicise their goods and services. A good example of shopping sites is the OLX where sellers post a picture of the items they want to sell, their description, and price. In addition, online shopping has little or no interference from competitors.

According to Bonsu and Darmody (2008, p. 355), unlike in supermarkets, shopping malls, shops, and hotels where customers line up to be served, online shopping is personal. Customers will use their computers, mobile phones or iPads to access the items that they want to buy. There are no cues and scramble for scarce items as it happens sometimes in shops and supermarkets.

Clients can order for items that they may not be confident to pick in the company of others in the supermarket. Such items include medicine for diseases that are stereotyped such as HIV/AIDs and other STDs. Thus, online shopping guarantees privacy and convenience.

Moreover, online shopping has been very beneficial for the physically challenged. Since these people find it difficult to travel, open fridges and shelves in supermarkets, and/or even to carry their shopping, they prefer using this service. Online shopping service saves them the strenuous activity hence enabling them to shop comfortably just like their normal counterparts.

Although e-commerce has been embraced in many economies of the world, there are several challenges that face its advancement. One of the drawbacks of online shopping is that it is not a very safe and secure transaction. The Secure Test consultancy firm that is based in the United Kingdom conducted a research on the safety of e-commerce.

Out of 100 websites that the consultancy investigated, the company concluded that there were many flaws in terms of handling of customers’ details by various websites. The methods of handling security details of customers were very insecure. Such flaws included mishandling of customer passwords and email addresses.

Mismanagement of the customer’s data is a great loop that online attackers use to hack registered e-commerce sites. Another drawback is lack of compliance with the required standards for the use of credit card by the issuing companies. Credit cards are required to be compliant with the PCI-DSS standards, which are the international standards that should guide the security of credit card services.

However, in a recent survey of credit compliance in the UK, only 14 percent of the 65 companies that were involved had complied with the PCI-DSS standards. Surprisingly, even large website companies such as Littlewoods were found to lag in terms of compliance. Companies such as the New Look are also not compliant. However, they do not keep details of customers’ credit cards and passwords.

In fact, customers should revert to PayPal, which is more secure. Constaninides (2004, p. 111) argue that websites are hacked using SQL injection where fraudsters use the registered websites to perform fraud on online customers. The other drawback is that online shopping websites cannot be trusted. Websites that host most of the shopping sites portals are never screened for authenticity.

Without scrutiny, such companies can be operated by people with ill motives hence injuring innocent customers. For example, Fasthosts Company has fallen to this trap. Last year, this company, which is based in the UK, was ordered to have its customers alter their FTP and all their passwords to their emails due to data breach. If this step were not taken as a quick remedy, many online shoppers would have lost their money.

With the advancement of computer technology, e-commerce has been adopted by many economies in the world today. Online commerce involves the use of internet-enabled computers to carry out shopping on company websites. The buyer pays for the services using credit cards or debit cards with special passwords. There are various advantages and disadvantages of using online shopping.

The benefits include saving time and energy used in shopping, easy access of goods and services that are not available in certain regions, access to goods and services by physically challenged persons, and enhancing efficiency. However, several drawbacks are evident such as insecurity, poor credit card compliance by the providers, and website hosts that cannot be trusted due to poor authenticity.

Finally, from the above discussion, e-commerce has more advantages in relation to disadvantages. Hence, it should be adopted in the world with the necessary input in security.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography

April 30–june 21, 2003.

Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography , an exhibition of 20th-century photographs of Moscow, opens at Columbia University's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and remains on display through Saturday, June 21, 2003.

Moscow has been a powerful magnet for many Russian photographers of the 20th century. Moscow: City, Spectacle, Capital of Photography presents the work of 31 photographers, whose images have defined the visual experience of Moscow from the 1920s to the present. Diverse in form and strategy, the 90 photographs chosen for the exhibition trace the history of Russian documentary photography and offer insight into individual practices. From Aleksandr Rodchenko's constructivist visions and Evgenii Khaldei's humanist landscapes to Igor Moukhin's scenes of urban spectacle and alienation in the works of Russia's key 20th-century photographers, Moscow ventures beyond the expected image as a site of famous landmarks, architectural treasures and dramatic lifestyles.

Early 20th-century photographers Boris Ignatovich and Arkadii Shaikhet saw themselves in the vanguard of an emerging mass-media culture, defining with their cameras the visual experience of Soviet modernity. For nearly 70 years, Soviet photography was assigned the duty of maintaining the ideological rigidity of the Soviet State. Yet, as examples of the work of Iakov Khalip, Anatolii Egorov, Mikhail Savin, and Mark Markov-Grinberg show, Soviet photographic practices were much more complex than has been previously acknowledged. The works of these photographers remain intensely compelling to a modernist eye.

Contemporary Russian photographers, such as Lev Melikhov, Valerii Stigneev and Sergei Leontiev, engage with the legacy of the Soviet documentary photography. But for them the documentary is a complex and multivalent genre, which incorporates subjectivity, ambiguity and reflexivity and comments on social and cultural issues without losing sight of the position from which that commentary is made. In the recent photographs by Vladimir Kupriyanov, Igor Moukhin, Anna Gorunova and Pakito Infante, the "real" space of Moscow is replaced by an imaginary and optical spaces of virtuality.

The works in the exhibition are on loan from Moscow's Cultural Center Dom, and many are being shown outside Russia for the first time. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Wallach Art Gallery is publishing an illustrated catalogue with a scholarly essay by the exhibition curator, Nadia Michoustina, a Ph.D. candidate in Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages. The essay presents a nuanced history of Russian photography of the 20th century, and contributes to an interpretation of extraordinary images.

Mental health care is hard to find, especially for people with Medicare or Medicaid

Rhitu Chatterjee

A woman stands in the middle of a dark maze. Lights guide the way for her. It illustrates the concept of standing in front of a challenge and finding the right solution to move on.

With rates of suicide and opioid deaths rising in the past decade and children's mental health declared a national emergency , the United States faces an unprecedented mental health crisis. But access to mental health care for a significant portion of Americans — including some of the most vulnerable populations — is extremely limited, according to a new government report released Wednesday.

The report, from the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, finds that Medicare and Medicaid have a dire shortage of mental health care providers.

The report looked at 20 counties with people on Medicaid, traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, which together serve more than 130 million enrollees — more than 40% of the U.S. population, says Meridith Seife , the deputy regional inspector general and the lead author of the report.

Medicaid serves people on low incomes, and Medicare is mainly for people 65 years or older and those who are younger with chronic disabilities.

The report found fewer than five active mental health care providers for every 1,000 enrollees. On average, Medicare Advantage has 4.7 providers per 1,000 enrollees, whereas traditional Medicare has 2.9 providers and Medicaid has 3.1 providers for the same number of enrollees. Some counties fare even worse, with not even a single provider for every 1,000 enrollees.

"When you have so few providers available to see this many enrollees, patients start running into significant problems finding care," says Seife.

The findings are especially troubling given the level of need for mental health care in this population, she says.

"On Medicare, you have 1 in 4 Medicare enrollees who are living with a mental illness," she says. "Yet less than half of those people are receiving treatment."

Among people on Medicaid, 1 in 3 have a mental illness, and 1 in 5 have a substance use disorder. "So the need is tremendous."

The results are "scary" but "not very surprising," says Deborah Steinberg , senior health policy attorney at the nonprofit Legal Action Center. "We know that people in Medicare and Medicaid are often underserved populations, and this is especially true for mental health and substance use disorder care."

Among those individuals able to find and connect with a provider, many see their provider several times a year, according to the report. And many have to drive a long way for their appointments.

"We have roughly 1 in 4 patients that had to travel more than an hour to their appointments, and 1 in 10 had to travel more than an hour and a half each way," notes Seife. Some patients traveled two hours each way for mental health care, she says.

Mental illnesses and substance use disorders are chronic conditions that people need ongoing care for, says Steinberg. "And when they have to travel an hour, more than an hour, for an appointment throughout the year, that becomes unreasonable. It becomes untenable."

"We know that behavioral health workforce shortages are widespread," says Heather Saunders , a senior research manager on the Medicaid team at KFF, the health policy research organization. "This is across all payers, all populations, with about half of the U.S. population living in a workforce shortage."

But as the report found, that's not the whole story for Medicare and Medicaid. Only about a third of mental health care providers in the counties studied see Medicare and Medicaid patients. That means a majority of the workforce doesn't participate in these programs.

This has been well documented in Medicaid, notes Saunders. "Only a fraction" of providers in provider directories see Medicaid patients, she says. "And when they do see Medicaid patients, they often only see a few."

Lower reimbursement rates and a high administrative burden prevent more providers from participating in Medicaid and Medicare, the report notes.

"In the Medicare program, they set a physician fee rate," explains Steinberg. "Then for certain providers, which includes clinical social workers, mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists, they get reimbursed at 75% of that rate."

Medicaid reimbursements for psychiatric services are even lower when compared with Medicare , says Ellen Weber , senior vice president for health initiatives at the Legal Action Center.

"They're baking in those discriminatory standards when they are setting those rates," says Steinberg.

The new report recommends that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) take steps to increase payments to providers and lower administrative requirements. In a statement, CMS said it has responded to those recommendations within the report.

According to research by Saunders and her colleagues at KFF, many states have already started to take action on these fronts to improve participation in Medicaid.

Several have upped their payments to mental health providers. "But the scale of those increases ranged widely across states," says Saunders, "with some states limiting the increase to one provider type or one type of service, but other states having rate increases that were more across the board."

Some states have also tried to simplify and streamline paperwork, she adds. "Making it less complex, making it easier to understand," says Saunders.

But it's too soon to know whether those efforts have made a significant impact on improving access to providers.

CMS has also taken steps to address provider shortages, says Steinberg.

"CMS has tried to increase some of the reimbursement rates without actually fixing that structural problem," says Steinberg. "Trying to add a little bit here and there, but it's not enough, especially when they're only adding a percent to the total rate. It's a really small increase."

The agency has also started covering treatments and providers it didn't use to cover before.

"In 2020, Medicare started covering opioid treatment programs, which is where a lot of folks can go to get medications for their substance use disorder," says Steinberg.

And starting this year, Medicare also covers "mental health counselors, which includes addiction counselors, as well as marriage and family therapists," she adds.

While noteworthy and important, a lot more needs to be done, says Steinberg. "For example, in the substance use disorder space, a lot of addiction counselors do not have a master's degree. And that's one of their requirements to be a counselor in the Medicare program right now."

Removing those stringent requirements and adding other kinds of providers, like peer support specialists, is key to improving access. And the cost of not accessing care is high, she adds.

"Over the past two decades, [in] the older adult population, the number of overdose deaths has increased fourfold — quadrupled," says Steinberg. "So this is affecting people. It is causing deaths. It is causing people to go to the hospital. It increases [health care] costs."

Amazon One launches an app to make sign-up for its palm-recognition service even easier

Signing up for Amazon One—our palm recognition service for entry, identification, and payment—just got easier. Until today, customers had to visit a physical location to hover their palm over an Amazon One device to sign up for the service. Now, they can sign up for Amazon One from home, work, or on-the-go via the Amazon One app, available from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store . With the app, first-time users will no longer require additional time to sign up during checkout. For retailers, the app ensures faster lines and a more frictionless in-store experience.

A photo of a customer purchasing a coffee and croissant with Amazon One.

The new Amazon One app lets customers create their online profile by logging into their Amazon account, taking a photo of their palm(s), and adding a payment method, all within the app. Once they’ve signed up, customers can begin using Amazon One for payment, entry, age verification, and loyalty rewards by simply hovering their palm over an Amazon One device at any one of the 500+ Whole Foods Market stores in the U.S. , several Amazon stores, and over 150 third-party locations in stadiums, airports, fitness centers, convenience stores, and more. Amazon One has been used more than 8 million times, and over 80% of shoppers who use Amazon One at Amazon and Whole Foods Market stores choose to use the service repeatedly.

New AI innovation powers highly accurate identity matching

An image showing a woman's hands holding her phone and taking a photo of her hand.

Amazon One was developed using generative AI to create synthetic palm images, which were critical in training our machine learning models. AI also powers our latest innovation—the ability to match a camera phone photo with near-infrared imagery from an Amazon One device—while still maintaining a highly accurate and secure service. When a customer who signed up for Amazon One via the app hovers their palm over an Amazon One device the first time, our AI system is able to compare and match the palm and vein imagery captured by the Amazon One device with their camera phone photo, and only at this time is enrollment considered complete.

An image showing how to use the Amazon One app.

How do we do this?

Amazon One looks at both your palm and its underlying vein structure to create a unique numerical, vector representation—called a palm signature—for identity matching. To ensure Amazon One continues to deliver the same accuracy ( 99.9999% ), our new AI innovation compares vector representations of palm images from the Amazon One app with the vector representation of palm and vein images from an Amazon One device. This allows us to confirm that the person hovering their palm over the Amazon One device is the same who signed up for the service using the app.

Designed to protect customer privacy and data security

An image showing a woman seated on a leather sofa using her phone which is on the table.

Palm images taken via the Amazon One app are encrypted and sent to a secure Amazon One domain in the AWS cloud. To maintain our high bar for customer privacy and data security, these images cannot be downloaded or saved to your phone, and the mobile app includes additional layers of spoof detection. Customers love the convenience of Amazon One, and retailers and other businesses appreciate the fast, seamless, and secure experience it provides.
