How Modern Technology Can Shape Our Lives For The Better–And Also The Worst

Lily cole, actress, social campaigner and national geographic uk guest editor, reveals how modern technology can help us build a better future and why putting down her smart phone remains one of her biggest challenges..

Portrait image of Lily Cole

Not long ago, Lily Cole received a hand-written letter in the post. These days, that’s curious enough. Even more curious was the message it contained. It was from a friend of hers called Mark Boyle, informing her he had decided to abandon technology in all its forms. Boyle now lives off the grid in an old house in County Galway, in the west of Ireland.

Boyle had previously lived for three years without money and it was that legacy which first connected him to Cole, when she co-founded Impossible.com as an online gift economy to connect strangers in cities.

In preparation for her guest editorship of this issue of National Geographic, she wrote back to Boyle, quizzing him about his eschewal of technology, and the effect on his life. (Telephone calls or email were obviously impossible.) At the time of this interview, the delays of the international postal system meant she still hadn’t received a reply.

Pros and Cons of Modern Technology

Mark Boyle's handwritten note in pencil to Lily Cole

Like all of us (except for the Mark Boyles of this world), Cole appreciates the pros and cons of modern technology. But this actress and social campaigner admits there’s always a love-hate relationship at play. She uses her mobile phone as an example.

“I’m potentially addicted to it,” she says. “Of course, there are enormous benefits to mobile phones but it’s crucial we all stop to question the role of digital technology in our lives and how it impacts our brains and our lifestyles.”

On the rare days she kicks the habit and turns her phone off, Cole finds herself thinking about unread messages, or emails she should send. At the same time, however, she notices an improvement in her mental state. “If I’m on holiday and I haven’t had reception for a few days, I feel much calmer. Is there one particular part of the brain we use when we’re on our phones or computers? If so, I worry we’re over-using that part of our brains.”

Cole compares digital technology temptation to the lure of food. “Imagine if food had been invented only 28 years ago, when the internet was invented. Yes, food is important and you need it to survive, but you wouldn’t consume all day long, as we do our mobile phones. Perhaps–as Mark Boyle puts it–we are technologically obese.”

Renewable Technology

Lily Cole believes that modern technology can enable a city's infrastructure to operate more efficiently. Cole ...

Impossible has since diversified its tech offering, and one project they have collaborated on is a smartphone called the Fairphone, which is built from ethically-sourced materials, easily repaired and with replaceable modules.

Fairphone is careful to only use conflict free minerals in their supply chain, and its modular proposition means that you don’t have to upgrade and replace the phone every year or two. But, crucially, Impossible designed a feature that reminds owners how long it is since they last used it. “It encourages people to cut back on their usage time.”

Cole is excited by the possibilities technology might offer for smart cities–where digital technology enables the city’s infrastructure to operate more efficiently. She reels off potential benefits such as automatically staggering energy use in domestic homes to avoid energy surges; or self-driving electric cars and car-sharing services.

Cole believes it’s not too unrealistic to imagine that, in the coming years, we’ll see autonomous flying cars in the cities’ skies. “They’ll be part of mainstream public transport,” she predicts, aware that right now it sounds like the backdrop to a sci-fi movie.

Simple life

Electric cars

“Don’t get me wrong, I would love for everyone to do a Mark Boyle: move to the wilderness to live a simpler life closer to nature, but as our global population continues to grow at a rate of 240,000 additional people a day, cities will inevitably get denser and we need to make adaptations for that. The sky maybe the only place with any space left.”

A few days after this interview Cole received a letter back from Boyle; hand-written, in pencil, of course. It turns out he has been living without technology for over a year now. “Language, an axe, smartphones, sex robots, even this pencil I write with could all be considered technologies,” he writes.

“I no longer wish to use industrial-scale technology–things that I couldn't possibly make from the landscape I’m trying to live as part of; things that discourage me from developing a direct and immediate relationship with the life–human and non-human–that surrounds me.”

So Boyle has abandoned electricity, gas, oil, solar power and running water. He has no car, no phone, no internet access, no fridge, no freezer. His reasons for such a drastic change in lifestyle?

Impact of Industrialism

Concrete Maze

“The political ideology of industrialism is driving the mass extinction of species, wiping out tribal peoples–and their languages, cultures, ways, perspectives–while creating a toxic biosphere,” he adds.

“Whether you use your smart phone or laptop once a day, or fifty times, its initial production requires oil rigs, quarries, mines, factories, armies to enforce international contracts, deforestation, bottom-trawling, transport networks and everything else required to feed and support the industrial economy required for their production.”

“Technology also separates us from the natural world and our immediate community. I hear many people spend more time in bed touching and playing with their smart phones, than their lovers,” he concludes.

Life values

It’s a notion Cole has much sympathy for. She appreciates “all the amazing positive things that technology can do”, but warns “we have to be mindful that there can be as many negative effects”.

“We shouldn't blindly, naively carry on with life as normal, assuming that technology will save us,” she adds. “Perhaps we need to prioritise making changes to our values and behaviour patterns whilst developing all this fancy technology.”

Lily Cole is the guest editor of the February 2018 issue of National Geographic magazine out now in all good retailers .

What makes technology good or bad for us, how technology affects our well-being partly depends on whether it strengthens our relationships..

Everyone’s worried about smartphones. Headlines like “ Have smartphones destroyed a generation? ” and “ Smartphone addiction could be changing your brain ” paint a bleak picture of our smartphone addiction and its long-term consequences. This isn’t a new lament—public opinion at the advent of the newspaper worried that people would forego the stimulating pleasures of early-morning conversation in favor of reading the daily .

Is the story of technology really that bad? Certainly there’s some reason to worry. Smartphone use has been linked to serious issues, such as dwindling attention spans , crippling depression , and even increased incidence of brain cancer . Ultimately, though, the same concern comes up again and again: Smartphones can’t be good for us, because they’re replacing the real human connection of the good old days.

Everyone’s heard how today’s teens just sit together in a room, texting, instead of actually talking to each other. But could those teenagers actually be getting something meaningful and real out of all that texting?

The science of connection

modern technology essay pros and cons

A quick glance at the research on technology-mediated interaction reveals an ambivalent literature. Some studies show that time spent socializing online can decrease loneliness , increase well-being , and help the socially anxious learn how to connect to others. Other studies suggest that time spent socializing online can cause loneliness , decrease well-being , and foster a crippling dependence on technology-mediated interaction to the point that users prefer it to face-to-face conversation.

It’s tempting to say that some of these studies must be right and others wrong, but the body of evidence on both sides is a little too robust to be swept under the rug. Instead, the impact of social technology is more complicated. Sometimes, superficially similar behaviors have fundamentally different consequences. Sometimes online socialization is good for you, sometimes it’s bad, and the devil is entirely in the details.

This isn’t a novel proposition; after all, conflicting results started appearing within the first few studies into the internet’s social implications, back in the 1990s. Many people have suggested that to understand the consequences of online socialization, we need to dig deeper into situational factors and circumstances. But what we still have to do is move beyond recognition of the problem to provide an answer: When, how, and why are some online interactions great, while others are dangerous?

The interpersonal connection behaviors framework

As a scientist of close relationships, I can’t help but see online interactions differently from thinkers in other fields. People build relationships by demonstrating their understanding of each other’s needs and perspectives, a cyclical process that brings them closer together. If I tell you my secrets, and you respond supportively, I’m much more likely to confide in you again—and you, in turn, are much more likely to confide in me.

This means that every time two people talk to each other, an opportunity for relationship growth is unfolding. Many times, that opportunity isn’t taken; we aren’t about to have an in-depth conversation with the barista who asks for our order. But connection is always theoretically possible, and that’s true whether we’re interacting online or face-to-face.

Close relationships are the bread and butter of happiness—and even health. Being socially isolated is a stronger predictor of mortality than is smoking multiple cigarettes a day . If we want to understand the role technology plays in our well-being, we need to start with the role it plays in our relationships.

And it turns out that the kind of technology-mediated interactions that lead to positive outcomes are exactly those that are likely to build stronger relationships. Spending your time online by scheduling interactions with people you see day in and day out seems to pay dividends in increased social integration . Using the internet to compensate for being lonely just makes you lonelier; using the internet to actively seek out connection has the opposite effect .

“The kind of technology-mediated interactions that lead to positive outcomes are exactly those that are likely to build stronger relationships”

On the other hand, technology-mediated interactions that don’t really address our close relationships don’t seem to do us any good—and might, in fact, do us harm. Passively scrolling through your Facebook feed without interacting with people has been linked to decreased well-being and increased depression post-Facebook use.

That kind of passive usage is a good example of “ social snacking .” Like eating junk food, social snacking can temporarily satisfy you, but it’s lacking in nutritional content. Looking at your friends’ posts without ever responding might make you feel more connected to them, but it doesn’t build intimacy.

Passive engagement has a second downside, as well: social comparison . When we compare our messy lived experiences to others’ curated self-presentations, we are likely to suffer from lowered self-esteem , happiness, and well-being. This effect is only exacerbated when we consume people’s digital lives without interacting with them, making it all too easy to miss the less photogenic moments of their lives.

Moving forward

The interpersonal connection behaviors framework doesn’t explain everything that might influence our well-being after spending time on social media. The internet poses plenty of other dangers—for two examples, the sense of wasting time or emotional contagion from negative news. However, a focus on meaningful social interaction can help explain decades of contradictory findings. And even if the framework itself is challenged by future work, its central concept is bound to be upheld: We have to study the details of how people are spending their time online if we want to understand its likely effects.

In the meantime, this framework has some practical implications for those worried about their own online time. If you make sure you’re using social media for genuinely social purposes, with conscious thought about how it can improve your life and your relationships, you’ll be far more likely to enjoy your digital existence.

Modern Technology’s Impact on Society Essay

Introduction, disadvantages and advantages of technology.

Modern technology has changed the world beyond recognition. Thanks to technology in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, advances have been made that have revolutionized our lives. Modern man can hardly imagine his life without machines. Every day, new devices either appear, or existing ones are improved. Technology has made the world a better place, bringing people additional conveniences and opportunities for healthy living through advances in science. I believe that the changes that technology has brought to our lives are incredibly positive in many areas.

One of the fields where computing and the Web have introduced improvements is education. Machines can keep large volumes of information in a tiny space, reducing entire library shelves of literature to a single CD-ROM of content (Garsten & Wulff, 2020). The Web also acts as a huge learning tool, linking together data sites and enabling inquisitive individuals to seek out just about any subject conceivable. A single personal computer can hold hundreds of instructional programs, visual and audio tutorials, and provide learners with exposure to an immense quantity of content. In the classroom, virtual whiteboards are replacing conventional whiteboards, allowing teachers to provide interactive content for students and play instructional movies without the need for a projector.

Advanced technology has also dramatically and favorably changed the medical care sector. Developments in diagnostic instruments allow doctors to detect hidden diseases, improving the likelihood of successful therapy and saving lives. Advances in drugs and vaccines have been extremely influential, nearly eradicating diseases such as measles, diphtheria, and smallpox, which once caused massive epidemics (Garsten & Wulff, 2020). Modern medicine allows patients to treat chronic diseases that were once debilitating and life-threatening, such as diabetes and hypertension. Technological advances in medicine have helped improve the lives of people around the world. In addition, the latest technology has dramatically increased the productivity of various techniques.

The computers’ capability to resolve complicated mathematical calculations enables them to accelerate any problem that involves metrics or other calculations. Simulating physical processes on a computer can save time and money in any production situation, giving engineers the ability to simulate any design. Modern technology in transportation allows large distances to be traveled quickly. Electric trains, airplanes, cars, and even rockets are used for this purpose (Garsten & Wulff, 2020). In this way, technology brings positive change for people who love to travel.

Despite all the positive changes, there are also disadvantages to the active development of technology. For example, more and more people are becoming dependent on the computer, TV, or cell phone. They ignore their household chores, studies, or work and spend all their time in front of a laptop or TV screen (Garsten & Wulff, 2020). Because of this, people may become inactive and less willing to work, hoping that technology will do everything for them.

In conclusion, I believe that despite some of the disadvantages, the advantages of gadgets are much more significant. Modern technology saves time and allows people to enjoy life. Moreover, new technologies in medicine also contribute to a longer life expectancy of the population and the cure of diseases that were previously beyond the reach of doctors. In addition to medicine, technology has brought significant positive changes to the fields of communication, education, and engineering. Therefore, I believe that the positive impact of technological progress on human lives cannot be denied.

The introduction of android phones and people shifting from telephone to these smartphones is what we call “ Modern Technology” . The internet, MRI machines, Hybrid vehicles, iPADs, smart phones, smart watches, LED televisions and VRs are all examples of it. 50 years later when the advanced versions of the current technologies will be introduced, they are going be the modern technologies of that time. Years ago when smartphones were introduced people were very careful while using them. The devices were sensitive and quite complicated back then. If we look at the smart phones of the same companies now days, they have more quality than before. Waterproof devices with 2 year breakage warranty, who would’ve thought of it in the past?

If modern technology has 1000 advantages , it also has 100 disadvantages . That is what we are going to highlight “Advantages and Disadvantages of Modern Technology” today.

Advantages of Modern Technology

  • Source of Entertainment

Modern technology has expanded the entertainment industry. There was a time when for entertainment purposes, people used to rely on DVD and cassette players. If we look at the current period, it has increased the options that can be used for entertainment purposes. Now people can watch movies on laptops and smartphones anywhere, anytime. For playing a game you don’t necessarily need to own a gaming console because thanks to the modern technology, you can now access all famous games on your laptop or mobile phones. Even GTA and FIFA are now available on smartphones!

  • Information is Easily Accessible

Disadvantages of Modern Technology

  • Increased Unemployment Rates

Modern technology has brought many benefits and advantages for humans but this is also true that the expense of these benefits is paid by only some people. While others enjoy the luxuries and ease introduced by the modern technology, there are people who suffer. More machines mean that the demand for labor and employees reduces increasing the unemployment rates of a country. Employees lose jobs and they face difficulties raising their families. Advancement in technology is usually a curse for many people.

  • Threat to Humans

Introduction of new weapons and chemicals is also a part of “ Disadvantages of Modern Technology” . Atomic bombs and similar inventions are good when it comes to defending a country but these are some inventions that can destroy humankind. If we look at the history, years ago the weapons used caused huge destruction. Imagine the kinds of weapons being manufactured now days.

  • Social Isolation

We are reading the advantages and disadvantages of modern technology . With the introduction of social media and smartphones, more and more people prefer to interact online rather than meeting their friends and family. This leads to loneliness and stress. Humans need to interact in order to survive and grow. Lack of interaction can cause depression and anxiety disorders. In the past, people used to play cricket and football outside but with the introduction of gaming consoles this trend has changed. Children now prefer to play online sitting at home rather than going out. This has also led to some serious health issues like obesity.

  • Decreased Creativity

As more and more machines are being introduced, human brains are getting wasted. People now rely on machines to carry out a job or any task which means that the creativity is fading away. Brainstorming and critical thinking are history in some cases. Even children are getting used to ease. Many schools have now allowed calculators in classes and this means that we are going to see some weak mathematicians in future!

  • Decreased Security

It is true that modern technology has increased the security but at the same time, it is to be blamed for the thefts happening around the globe. Our car, bank accounts, personal information, everything is somehow linked to the internet. There are thousands of cases reported every month that include hacking, online theft, phishing and spreading of viruses.

  • No privacy at all!

If you open up a browser you will see that your location is reported immediately. Not only this, the smart phones you are using, the mobile network, your phone numbers and even your home address are no longer private. Anyone can access your personal information by visiting relevant websites or by using tracking softwares!

Ending Note

That was enough from Advantages and Disadvantages of Modern technology, no doubt, has brought some great benefits with it but these benefits have a cost. The cost is quite high for some people while for others it affordable. If you have in mind and advantages and disadvantages about this topic, share in comment box. 12 Pros and Cons of Technology

Since the beginning the time, humanity has used technology to make life better in some way. Every discovery is a form of technology. At one point, being able to create fire was cutting-edge technology. We’ve come a long way in a relatively short time thanks to the innovative ways we have used technology over the generations.

Technology certainly makes life better, but it can also be a hindrance to our daily routines. Modern technology can be addictive. The average smartphone owner checks their phone almost 100 times throughout the day. We have come to a point where we rely on the technology sometimes more than our own ingenuity.

Here are some more of the pros and cons of technology to think about and discuss.

What Are the Pros of Technology?

1. It allows us to experience new cultures. Technology has allowed the planet to become a smaller place. Over the course of a day, it is possible to travel to the other side of the world to see new countries, new cultures, and new opportunities. Even in previous generations, shipbuilding technologies provided this same benefit. In the future, spacefaring technology could be the next evolution of this experience.

2. It provides us with deeper insights. Technology collects massive amounts of data that can be mined for numerous insights and benefits. These analytics allow us to pinpoint specific weak points that can be turned into strengths. It can identify new business opportunities, create new learning opportunities, and help people discover new facets about themselves so they can achieve more than ever before.

3. It allows us to do more with less. Imagine what a cutting-edge farm looked like in the early 1800’s. There was no mechanization. Everything was done by horse or by hand. That limited the yield an area could produce. Those yields, however, were still greater than what previous generations could achieve if they didn’t even have equipment to work with horsepower. Every time there is a technology improvement, we are able to do more, in any industry, with fewer resources being consumed.

4. It improves profits. New technologies are always expensive, but that’s because they create more profits. It is possible today, through technology, for a sole proprietor to run a global business from their garage or home office. New technologies have created platforms where freelancers and independent professionals can make more on their own than if they worked for at traditional employer. Technology can even improve the efficiency of delivery and distribution mechanisms, which can also improve profits.

5. It makes research become simple. For children born in the 1980s or before, there was a time when finding information required a trip to the library or owning an encyclopedia. Today, the technologies of the data access makes it possible to find out anything at almost any time. Want to know why your leg is hurting? Need to order some food for dinner? Want to book a vacation? Can’t remember the name of a movie, but you remember who starred in it? Technology makes it easy to research, purchase, or discover what we want or need every day.

6. It saves time. If a worker is able to save 10 minutes of time because of technology, that’s an extra 10 minutes they can do something else. We can save time through technology with improved communication, improved manufacturing processes, and automated systems. Computers, after all, can work with greater efficiency when compared to how a human typically works.

7. It helps us save the environment. New technologies are helping to improve recycling and reduce emissions, among other things. For example, new technology is reducing emissions by expanding the usage of vehicles that run on fuels that are alternatives to fossil fuels, by making our homes more energy-efficient, and by creating methods to remove carbon dioxide from our atmosphere.

What Are the Cons of Technology?

1. It can be powerfully destructive. Technology can be “good” or “evil” based on how it is used. Innovation has led to incredibly destructive, world-altering weapons with atomic, nuclear, and hydrogen bombs. Hackers can use the internet to steal personal information. In September 2017, more than 143 million people were affected by a single data breach at Equifax. If humanity were to ever become extinct, there is a good chance that technology would provide a needed assist.

2. It leads to health problems. Many forms of technology, from computers to televisions to automobiles, cause people to sit for a majority of their day. This constant sitting could be just as dangerous to a person’s health as smoking could be. Consistently using technology can lead to hand, wrist, and forearm pain, lead to social isolation, and may even be a contributing factor to the formation of depression-like symptoms.

3. It has created a lack of privacy. If you want to find out a lot of personal information about someone, the technology of the internet can serve your needs quite effectively. A website like Dirt Search allows you to enter a phone number, look up a business, or find a person using public records. Crawlers can put all of your social media feeds onto one page for someone to review everything you’ve ever posted. Then consider cameras and CCTV in most public locations and it is possible to track a person’s every movement online and in real life.

4. It isn’t cheap. New technologies are difficult for some socioeconomic groups to access because of their cost. That includes technologies that we may consider to be essential to life, such as medical advances. Reaching some nations with standard vaccines or something basic, like a mosquito net to prevent malaria, can be extremely difficult because of the costs involved. Technology has created the idea that everything is a profit/loss concept and one could argue that part of our humanity has been lost because of that.

5. It creates the need to constantly upgrade. Technology can create greater efficiencies, but it can also create the needs to constantly upgrade and improve the technologies being used. If there is 100% reliance on a specific technology and it stops working, then nothing will get done.

The pros and cons of technology show us that we can have a better life and be more productive, but only if we are aware of the potential negatives and proactively work to contain them. There will always be a good side and a bad side to technology. It is up to each of us to find the good in it every day.

  • Modern technologies have provided opportunities for easy access to relevant information anytime and anywhere. High-speed internet and platforms like Wikipedia and YouTube offer vast amounts of data for research and entertainment purposes. Smart gadgets such as iPads, iPhones, and iWatches allow users to access the internet and information from anywhere in the world. The entertainment industry has also been transformed by modern technology, with advancements in video games, music systems, and smart TVs. Learning has become more convenient and fun through the use of tablets in classrooms, allowing students to share visual lessons and examples. Additionally, modern technology has improved the healthcare system, reducing mistakes in surgical rooms and providing health apps for monitoring. Enterprises have also benefited from technology, increasing production turnover and product quality. Housing conditions have improved with automated systems and integrated security.
  • The active use of technology has led to social isolation, with people spending more time playing video games and using social networks, neglecting real-life interactions. Technology has replaced traditional forms of interaction, potentially leading to loneliness. Additionally, the automation of many jobs by robots has resulted in unemployment for humans. The reliance on tools like calculators and spell checkers has reduced creativity and intelligence. The progress of technology has also increased the risk of internet fraud and hacking. Modern technology is often associated with the outbreak of wars and the production of modern military weapons, causing harm to both humans and the environment.

Pros and Cons of Modern Technology Essay

A well-formulated science fiction essay can come across as being very technical, but it is actually a matter of how much information is given to the reader that determines whether it is a good essay. So, what are some of the pros and cons of modern technology? How do you make your essay stand out from the rest?

The main purpose of your science fiction and technology essay is to entertain and inform the reader. If you cannot show them how something works or what it’s like to be using it, then you are not doing your readers any justice. It should be presented in a way that will entice the reader. The pros and cons of modern technology should make the reader want to know more.

Your science fiction and technology essay should have a strong focus on one particular topic. For example, if you are writing a sci-fi essay about the benefits of space travel, it is important that you present information and examples on what space travel would be like. If you focus too much on space travel, then it will seem uninteresting and irrelevant. In fact, many people might turn off reading it entirely. It should be focused.

Another factor that should be considered when writing a modern technology essay is the length of the essay. If you write one page long, then that’s about the limit. However, if you find yourself having to take another page to explain things, then you might be better off spending more time on the essay.

When writing a science fiction or technology essay, try not to use the same technology over again. There are many different theories and ideas out there, and they all might require a different approach. If you find yourself repeating information over, then you may want to consider a different idea. For example, it might be worth looking into wireless internet instead of a cable connection. Wireless internet offers much faster data transmission speeds.

Lastly, when writing a modern technology essay, don’t be afraid to have a few bad things said about certain technologies. Some people might find your opinion unpopular. However, others will find it quite useful. If you put forth a negative view, then it is unlikely to be seen as racist or sexist.

Also, don’t make sure to always stick to positive things. Make sure that you mention anything that might have a negative effect on society, or society’s future. However, don’t say everything.

A great tip for writing a good science fiction and technology essay is to have fun. Have fun while writing and get to know the world around you.

Make sure to also check your facts before you start writing. Sometimes, there will be points that you can’t see because of the glare from a computer monitor. You’ll have to rely on your own senses for certain points. Even if you can’t see them, you have to be careful when using words in your essay, especially if you’re using the word “probably” as a main point.

You’ll also want to make sure that you use specific pronouns when discussing things. One good example of this is to make sure that you use singular and plural forms of the word “computer”. If you are using “computer”, you don’t have to use singular forms of the word. because you are stating that the words “computer” can be used to refer to both types of devices.

Another good thing to consider is to make sure that you are clear in what you are writing. Don’t use sentences that sound unclear. Write sentences as if they are one sentence. Make sure that your grammar is neat and clear.

When you have found a good example of an essay, make sure that you read it over several times. Try to be honest in what you have written, so that you don’t create a disservice to your audience. Remember, you can’t please everyone.

How Technology Influences Essay Writing: The Pros and Cons

Technology has led to many changes around the world. Many people are experiencing the influence of technology in business, education, workplaces, essay writing, and more.

It has transformed how people do things, think, or act. In writing, authors have changed how they used to write in the past. They have altered how they would think over a topic or theme when it comes to compiling an article for their readers. Even in class, the current generation of students has a new experience in writing their essays because of the latest technology, as does every professional essay and  paper writer from USA . Writing essays, articles, academic papers, and other materials is procedural. The author needs to adhere to certain rules as he or she writes. Despite these procedures, technology makes essay writing easier than it was in the past. Many people can complain that writing is tedious. This is because they are required to go to the library, read multiple books, take notes, and compare written articles before composing their essays. Other tasks, such as editing the text, would be done manually. Today, all these things have changed. With the inception of new machinery and tools, writing has become simple. There are tools to help the writer in editing, checking plagiarism, and monitoring the word count. There are advantages and disadvantages of technology in writing. While some people enjoy the new machines, others have a negative perception of the same. Here are some pros and cons of technology as related to writing:

Improves Written Communication

Through Google, authors gain a lot of knowledge to apply in their writing practice. Students have graduated from novices to skilled writers. The same applies to bloggers and other commercial writers. Their writing has improved greatly through their frequent interaction with the online materials written by other experts.

Increased Speed

Unlike the old style of writing, technology has made writing faster and easier in terms of finding the necessary material as well as typing. With the new models of computers with wide keyboards, essay writing has become swift; hence, saving a lot of time. People can also read articles online and find references fast. You only need to write a specific word on Google, and the result will be available within seconds.

Easier Editing

Professional writers know that editing a text is important. Sometimes it is not easy, and writers would spend long hours, many days, weeks, and months editing a manuscript. Thanks to the new technology that has made it easier through tools such as Turnitin and Grammarly. Besides, with the modern word processor, auto-correct typing is possible.

Enhanced Innovation

When people read texts from other authors, they are challenged to think and invent something new in their papers. You can learn different things such as styles of writing, grammar, sentence structure, and the general presentation of the essay. This helps one to be creative in their work instead of sticking to the past glory.

Improved Research Skills

The online library is extensive; there are many resources that one can refer to when it comes to online research. This makes essay writing easier. It improves the writer’s research skills as he or she delves into intensive reading and online consultation.

Risk of Plagiarism

The biggest challenge of technology is the risk of plagiarizing a text. It has affected most students because of their inexperience or limited research skills. They unprofessionally copy the content and cite their phrases wrongly which leads to plagiarism. You could be tempted to copy information from the internet, especially when you are running out of time. If you are not careful, you can quickly plagiarize your papers.

The new technology has made many people forsake physical libraries with rich books to rely on online libraries. Some research can be done best in physical libraries where one refers from one book to the other. This is difficult with the new technology because people would prefer the speed and efficiency of researching online instead or perusing voluminous books. This has led to a dependency on online sites. In a way, it decreases one’s ability to expound the ideas and opinions they have on a particular topic.

Reduced Thoughtfulness

It is difficult for students and other commercial writers to take time to think when they know they can access some information easily from the internet. They will turn to Google even with simple topics that one would write out of creativity. There have been many changes in the writing sector due to the new technology. Google, social media, innovative software, and mobile apps have all contributed to the evolution that writers feel today. You have read the pros and cons of this technology. The pros outweigh the cons. You only need to be careful as you explore it to avoid the negative implications.

Using Technology in Everyday Life: Pros and Cons

Introduction, works cited.

Technology in the modern world is an integral part of human life. Technological progress is developing rapidly and rapidly every day. It has played a significant role in the development of almost all industries, such as business, education, healthcare, banking, transport and entertainment, etc. From the scientific point of view, information technologies represent the entire accumulated experience of mankind in a universal form suitable for practical use. Regardless of whether a person is in the office, at school, in the hospital or at home, their life is surrounded by technology – gadgets and household appliances. Smartphones, laptops, WIFI routers, LED TVs, thermostats and elevators are real examples of how technology has changed every aspect of everyday life. Modern technologies are being actively introduced at a rapid pace, which affects many aspects of everyday life.

Modern man cannot imagine their life without various technologies. Every day, either new devices appear or existing ones are improved. People have different attitudes to new inventions. Some believe that gadgets are actually useful and necessary, while others consider them unnecessary since, in their opinion, they negatively affect people. Modern technologies affect various aspects of a person’s relationship with reality. Today, people are beginning to think about what new information technologies will bring to the world of the future and in which direction the scales will swing as a result – of improvement or deterioration of the existing situation. Of course, scientific and technological progress appeared in order to change life for the better. However, it is increasingly common to hear about negative scenarios, up to the point that automated, highly intelligent machines will enslave their own creators. Both the opinion of the public and the point of view in scientific circles regarding the introduction of IT into wide practice have been divided.

Now there are more opportunities to access relevant information quite easily at any time and in any place. This has become possible thanks to modern technologies, such as high-speed Internet. A lot of data is published and indexed on the internet, and sites like Wikipedia and Youtube have excellent original content that is regularly used for research or entertainment. With smart gadgets like iPad, iPhone, iWatch, etc. Users, wherever they are, can easily access a huge amount of information via the Internet on these devices. These smart gadgets make it easy to access the Internet anywhere in the world, simplifying obtaining information.

Modern technology has also played a significant role in changing the entertainment industry. Home entertainment has improved with the invention of video games, advanced music and visual systems such as smart TVs that can connect to the internet live so that the user can share what he is watching with friends (Aldrich 146). Easy access to music and its storage became possible. For example, a service like iTunes allows users to buy music at a small price and download it to their players. In addition, bars, clubs and amusement parks have benefited from advances in technology. People can watch movies in 3D, ride the tallest roller coaster, or be served by a robot in a bar; all of this is possible due to modern technologies.

Learning is also an integral part of daily life, and modern technology has made it easy for students to study anywhere with online education. Students are now using modern technology in the classroom to learn more effectively. For example, they use tablets to share visual lessons and examples with peers in the classroom; this has made learning more convenient and fun. In addition, new modern educational technologies support individual learning, which gives students the opportunity to study independently without the need for tutors.

Technology has also had a positive impact on the healthcare system. Today, most hospitals have implemented modern technologies in surgical rooms, which has reduced the number of mistakes made by doctors (Posamentier and Spreitzer 30). People can easily make mistakes due to work overload and stressful factors. In addition, the developer community has come up with health apps that allow us to monitor our health or exercise. These apps are used on mobile phones, so users have access to them at any time.

Modern technologies have helped enterprises to increase production turnover. People are slow, and sometimes they are not able to make the goods on time and efficiently. Many companies have introduced modern technologies into their production line, increasing production volume and ensuring more stable product quality. Another great example of how modern technologies have simplified life is the improvement of housing conditions. Wealthy people can afford floating or glass houses, and people with less money can build or purchase small or mobile homes. Most items in homes are now automated; for example, doors use fingerprints, maps or Bluetooth on a mobile phone. With the development of a more reliable integrated security system, the level of security has also increased.

First of all, as a result of the active use of new technologies, social isolation is growing, and people spend more and more time playing video games, using social networks and neglecting their real life. If a user can easily chat with friends online, they will not feel the need to leave home to make new friends. Technology has replaced the old way of interaction; at a later stage, this lifestyle can lead to loneliness (Ott 111). Also, modern technology has replaced many human jobs; robots do work that used to be done by humans. For example, many packaging firms use robots on production lines to increase productivity and efficiency. This is good for employers, as they earn more money and serve customers, but bad for employees because they may lose their jobs.

Increased reliance on modern tools such as calculators and spell checkers has reduced creativity and intelligence. Many people today cannot write even the simplest words correctly without an editor. Others feel that it is impossible for them to solve an elementary equation without a calculator. Although these tools help to increase our efficiency, people can become overly dependent on them. Fortunately, the progress of technology has increased the level of security; however, due to these advances, the most valuable things are connected to the Internet. Financial accounts, photos, mobile phones – all of this puts users’ data at risk of Internet fraud (Schulenburg and Peeters 183). Due to the Network of devices and systems around the world, many have fallen victim to identity theft and hacked accounts by hackers. Modern technology is also the main reason for the outbreak of endless wars, which contributes to the production of modern military weapons. Therefore, when these weapons fall into the hands of criminals, they use them for their own selfish purposes. In addition, these weapons often severely damage the natural earth, making some areas uninhabitable.

Modern technologies have become an integral part of the life not only of an individual but also of society as a whole. Now it is quite difficult to imagine an enterprise that would not use the achievements of modern technological progress. The development of science and technology is indeed beneficial for humanity, but it conceals unforeseen fatal predestination, affecting all aspects of social life. Not only is the content of labor changing, but significant transformations are also taking place in the entire structure of culture and modern civilization. In essence, a new civilizational way is being born. The development of technology helps to expand human capabilities and begin to use even those that were previously unavailable for some reason. In addition to the positive aspects of modern technologies, a negative impact should also be mentioned.

Speaking about the place of scientific and technological progress in the modern world, one should not underestimate its enormous importance, both for an individual and for humanity as a whole. It is not the technology itself and modern technologies that cause harm but the way a person uses them. People should not forget that technology is just a means, not the goal itself, and therefore it is important to learn how to use these means so that they bring maximum benefit to man and society. However, before using any means, a person must answer the main question for oneself: for which purposes do they need it, thus determining priorities in their value system. Thus, modern technologies represent a complex symbiosis of various effects, and it is impossible to consider them as purely positive or purely negative phenomena.

New Florida Law Aims to Get Kids Off Social Media. Will It Work?

modern technology essay pros and cons

Florida will have one of the country’s most restrictive social media bans for minors under a bill signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on March 25.

The law , which will take effect on Jan. 1, prohibits social media platforms from allowing children younger than 14 to have an account. For 14- and 15-year-olds, social media platforms must require parental permission before allowing them to set up accounts.

Addressing adolescents’ worsening mental health recently has become a top priority for school, district, state, and federal leaders as young people struggle with record-high rates of depression and anxiety .

Much of the conversation around the mental health crisis has focused on young people’s constant use of cellphones and social media. Some states, including Florida, already ban or are considering banning cellphones in classrooms . More than 200 districts have sued major social media companies over the youth mental health crisis.

“We dug into the research showing the negative effects of social media on children, and it directly pointed to the addictive features these companies develop to keep our kids hooked,” Florida House Speaker Paul Renner said in an email statement to Education Week.

Florida’s social media ban doesn’t target specific platforms. Instead, the bill says that the law applies to any platform where at least 10 percent of daily active users are children younger than 16 who use it for two hours or more a day; that uses “addictive” features, such as infinite scrolling; and that uses algorithms that analyze user data to handpick content for users.

Most social media platforms already state in their policies that children younger than 13 aren’t allowed to create accounts. But the law requires these platforms to actually verify the age of its users. It leaves it up to the companies to determine how to meet the requirements. If a social media platform is found in violation, the state Department of Legal Affairs may fine the platform up to $50,000 per violation. Parents or caregivers could also file lawsuits against the platforms.

Similar bans in other states have run into legal issues

Arkansas, California, Ohio, and Utah passed similar bans last year on kids using social media , but none of those laws has taken effect yet because of legal issues. Federal judges have stopped the legislation from taking effect over concerns that the bans violate kids’ free speech rights and that age verifications are unconstitutional.

Renner said during the bill signing that he expects social media companies to file lawsuits, but he’s confident the state will beat them, the Associated Press reported .

Carl Szabo, the vice president and general counsel for NetChoice, called the law “unconstitutional,” because it “infringes on Floridians’ First Amendment rights,” in an email statement to Education Week.

It’s “bad policy because of the data collection on Floridians by online services it will in effect require. This will put their private data at risk of breach,” Szabo added.

NetChoice is a trade association of online businesses that advocate free expression and free enterprise on the internet. It includes TikTok, Meta (the parent company of Instagram and Facebook), and Snap (the parent company of Snapchat). The organization has filed lawsuits against similar legislation in Arkansas, California, and Utah.

The Florida law has a contingency plan to put in motion if a court decides to prohibit the enforcement of the section that requires parental consent for 14- and 15-year-olds to use social media. It says in that case, the law will just prohibit anyone 15 years old or younger from using social media.

“It almost seems like they [the state] were preemptively punishing [anyone who tries to file a lawsuit], saying ‘All right, if you won’t give us this, we’re going to be even stricter,’” said Amelia Vance, the president of the Public Interest Privacy Center, which advocates effective, ethical, and equitable privacy safeguards for all children and students.

‘We just don’t know’ if bans work

Vance is skeptical that Florida’s ban will make children safer online. Kids will find ways around these restrictions if they really want to be on those platforms, she said.

“The approach that is most likely going to be effective here is the one that says, ‘OK, kids are going to be online. Let’s give them special protections when they are,” Vance said. The state’s “Digital Bill of Rights,” which passed last year and takes effect in July, would probably be more effective because it puts in place protections around what data can be collected and places limits around how the data can be used, she said.

Kris Perry, the executive director of Children and Screens, a nonprofit organization that seeks to understand and address the implications of digital media on child development, said a ban “will protect kids from the harms related to social media,” but it will also prevent them from “accessing the benefits.”

“It’d be really important to study whether or not the ban accomplished its intended goal,” Perry said. “We just don’t know, without studying the aftereffects of whether that was an effective strategy.”

In Florida, the statewide ban on students using cellphones during instructional time that went into effect last year has had a positive impact in some schools on student behavior and learning, according to Renner.

“We are hopeful that steering kids toward the real world and away from a warped digital world will result in even more positive outcomes [for student learning],” Renner said in the statement to Education Week.

As part of a SEL lesson, 6th grade students at Swope Middle School in Reno, Nev., practice online safety measures.

Equipping students with the right skills

For students, the focus shouldn’t be on restriction, said Ava Havidic , 18, a senior at Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy in Broward County, Fla.

“When you ban things or when you restrict things, sometimes, it’s going to be like a green light for students to say, ‘OK, how can I override that? How can I find my way to use it still?’” said Ava, who serves as a student adviser for the Broward County school board.

The focus should instead be on “explaining why it’s important to limit usage” and “formulating a mindset at a young age so they can learn how to use it correctly,” she said.

Kids will become adults, and they’re going to be using these platforms, and if we limit their use and don’t teach them the right way to use it, “they’re not going to be prepared,” she added.

Google to Delete Billions of Chrome Browser Records in Latest Settlement

The internet giant resolved a lawsuit that claimed it had deceived users by tracking their web activity in the Chrome browser’s private Incognito setting.

A photo of a large, glass Google office building behind landscaping.

By Nico Grant

Nico Grant reports on Google in San Francisco.

In recent months, Google has raced to settle a backlog of lawsuits ahead of major antitrust showdowns with the Justice Department later this year.

On Monday, the company resolved its fourth case in four months , agreeing to delete billions of data records it compiled about millions of Chrome browser users, according to a legal filing. The suit, Chasom Brown, et al. v. Google, said the company had misled users by tracking their online activity in Chrome’s Incognito mode, which they believed would be private.

Since December, Google has spent well over $1 billion to settle lawsuits as it prepares to fight the Justice Department, which has targeted Google’s search engine and its advertising business in a pair of lawsuits.

In December, Google resolved a suit with dozens of attorneys general claiming it strong-armed app makers into paying high fees. Six weeks later, the company settled a case that accused it of improperly sharing users’ private information from its defunct social media site, Google+. And in March, Google agreed to pay a Massachusetts company, Singular Computing, an undisclosed sum after being accused of stealing patent designs — a claim that Google denies.

To bring an end to the Incognito mode claims, Google committed “to rewrite its disclosures to inform users that Google collects private browsing data,” said the settlement, which was filed on Monday with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Users are already able to see the disclosure on the landing page when they open Incognito mode.

Google agreed, for the next five years, to maintain a change to Incognito mode that blocks third-party cookies by default, which limits how much web users can be tracked by sites.

“This requirement ensures additional privacy for Incognito users going forward, while limiting the amount of data Google collects from them,” the plaintiffs’ lawyers, led by David Boies, the high-profile attorney, said in the filing.

Google will also stop using technology that detects when users enable private browsing, so it can no longer track people’s choice to use Incognito mode. While Google will not pay plaintiffs as part of the settlement, individuals have the option of suing the company for damages.

Google said in a statement that the suit had been meritless.

“The plaintiffs originally wanted $5 billion and are receiving zero,” José Castañeda, a Google spokesman, said. “We are happy to delete old technical data that was never associated with an individual and was never used for any form of personalization.”

A trial was scheduled to start in early February, though the parties said in December that they had agreed to settle.

“The settlement stops Google from surreptitiously collecting user data worth, by Google’s own estimates, billions of dollars,” Mr. Boies said Monday.

An earlier version of this article misstated the day when Google filed a settlement of a lawsuit over its compiling of Chrome browser data. Apple resolved the case on Monday, not Tuesday.

Surprise! The federal government made a website that doesn’t stink.

I tried the irs free alternative to turbotax and here’s what you need to know.

modern technology essay pros and cons

Government websites have a mostly deserved reputation for being terrible and driving us nuts .

So it was a pleasant surprise to try IRS Direct File , a new (and politically controversial) option to file a tax return online directly with the Internal Revenue Service . Direct File works like TurboTax, but it’s run by the government and free to file a federal tax return.

Most people aren’t eligible to file their taxes with Direct File. I thought I could, was rejected partway through and instead used TurboTax.

Direct File was not perfect. Still, I liked using the IRS website — and I definitely prefer it over TurboTax, which annoys me with constant nags for more money and my private data.

You might feel differently about it. I’ll tell you about my experience with Direct File and why it’s important even if you don’t use the site.

We deserve effective online government services. Direct File is visible proof that government websites don’t have to stink.

How to file your taxes with IRS Direct File (if you can)

The first thing to know about Direct File is that it’s a trial project . And you probably can’t use it .

You can only file your tax return with the new IRS site if you’re in one of 12 states including Texas, New York and California; work for an employer rather than yourself; and meet many other eligibility requirements. (Read more here .)

Just going through Direct File’s seven online screens of eligibility checklists and doing an online identity verification almost made me quit.

Shira Ovide

But once I did start my tax return, Direct File felt pleasantly similar to TurboTax, which I have used for years.

Direct File guides you through yes-or-no questions about your income and potential tax breaks. You can chat online for help, too .

There are far fewer questions than there are in TurboTax because Direct File only permits use by people who have simple tax returns.

There were things I didn’t like. Unlike TurboTax, which had a digital copy of my W-2 tax form and let me pull in digital records from my investment accounts, I had to type into Direct File details like my income and interest payments.

That took more time and left room for me to mistype numbers.

The biggest problem was that partway through, Direct File told me that I couldn’t actually file my federal tax return with the site. Ugh.

I missed a detail in the eligibility checklist that you can’t use Direct File if you had more than $1,500 in interest income last year. I did. I was also nixed because I paid into a Health Savings Account, a fund through my employer to help pay for medical expenses.

I went through the whole Direct File process anyway to see how it went. And again, I was pleasantly surprised that the website was easy to use with clear questions and helpful explanations. And did I mention that it’s free? (If you can use it.)

A warning: Don’t mix up Direct File with existing IRS options to complete your tax return online.

You can also set up an account on the IRS Free File Fillable Forms website. Unlike Direct File or TurboTax, you need to go through the tax form yourself line by line. (Read more here about free or low-cost tax filing options.)

A colleague, Monica Rodman, found it confusing to use Free File Fillable Forms. Monica was so unsure of the results that they double checked the work with TurboTax. The whole process took 12 hours!

Monica gave up and had a good experience using Free Tax USA — which charged nothing to file a federal return and $15 for a state return.

The Free File Alliance, which runs Fillable Forms and a program called IRS Free File , has said about 463,000 households filed returns using Fillable Forms last year. NPR recently reported that more than 50,000 people have tried Direct File so far. Tens of millions of Americans file taxes with TurboTax each year.

The problem that IRS Direct File is trying to solve

Critics of Direct File in Congress and industry say the government is wasting money by replicating existing services like those from Intuit’s TurboTax, H&R Block and smaller tax preparers.

I can’t answer whether Direct File should exist or not. I can say as a technology writer and longtime user of TurboTax that commercial tax software drives me batty.

I like using TurboTax. But I hate that it nudges me over and over to pay more for extra features I don’t want. TurboTax also repeatedly tried to get me to use Credit Karma, a personal finance site also owned by Intuit.

And TurboTax wants permission to use private information like your income and debt to make more money pitching you financial services. ( Here’s how to say no to that .)

Direct File didn’t work for me, but I liked that it had zero yucky nagging as TurboTax has.

Intuit didn’t respond to my questions.

I know that not everyone will trust a government tax website. But I appreciate a choice between filing my tax return for free directly with the IRS or using a paid commercial website.

Hillary Hartley, chief executive of U.S. Digital Response , a nonprofit that helps governments create technology services, said citizens and government agencies benefit from competent public websites like Direct File.

We expect technology in our lives to just work. “When government can deliver on that same promise, then it pays dividends in rebuilding trust in our institutions,” Hartley said.

Julie Zauzmer Weil contributed to this report.

  • Yes, you can file your tax return for free. Here are your options .
  • The IRS says nearly 1 million people have an unclaimed tax refund from 2020. Here’s how to find out if the IRS owes you money .
