Completed applications are reviewed by a faculty admissions committee in the respective program, and the recommendations of the committee are submitted to the dean of the Graduate School. Decisions are based on a holistic review of the applicant’s materials, including but not limited to previous academic records, personal statement, previous experience, letters of recommendation, and other elements. The dean of the Graduate School makes the final admission decision, and all students seeking to complete graduate work at the University of Maryland for degree purposes must be formally admitted to the Graduate School by the dean. Submitting a complete, qualifying application does not guarantee admission . The number of applications received from individuals qualified for graduate study in SPH programs regularly exceeds the number of applicants who can be accommodated. Spaces available in the various programs are limited according to the availability of faculty, class and program size, and other program priorities. In such cases, only the most highly qualified students are admitted.

Students seeking admission to the graduate programs at UMD School of Public Health must have already earned or be in the process of earning a 4-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

There are no specific undergraduate prerequisites for master's degree applicants, though experience working, volunteering, or researching topics related to public health are valued in the review process.

PhD programs may have additional requirements for graduate training that will be listed in the program-specific requirements section.

Persons planning to apply to the MA and PhD programs in the Department of English should first consult Instructions for applicants on this website for specific information about our application procedures. (International students should also note those  guidelines provided by the Office of International Services .)

We seek applicants who will enhance our highly motivated, academically accomplished, and intellectually and culturally diverse student body. We normally receive about 100 applications annually for both programs; last year applications for the PhD outnumbered those for the MA by a 3:1 ratio. Admission to the PhD is highly competitive, so if you would like to be considered for the MA program if not selected for the PhD program, please indicate that in your personal statement. Applications can be submitted in mid-October (please refer to the UMD Graduate School for more information).

English MA & PhD Application Instructions

If you are uncertain about what time that the system will close in your timezone, please look it up. We are unable to make exceptions for late applications based on timezone.

Determination of In-State Status for Admission and Tuition Purposes: See https://www.usmd.edu/regents/bylaws/SectionVIII/VIII-2.70.pdf for the complete text of this policy.

An initial determination of in-state status will be made by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the time a student’s application for admission is considered. The determination made at that time, and any determination made thereafter, shall prevail in each semester, and if, the students makes a request to change it. Students may request to change their classification by submitting a timely petition to Residency Reclassification Services in the Office of the University Registrar. Determinations are based on the requirements of the residency policy. The deadline for submitting a complete petition, along with all supporting documents, is the first day of the semester in which the student wishes to be classified as in-state. No requests for retroactive change in status will be accepted. A student may only file a Petition for Change in Residency Classification for a current semester according to university established deadlines. In addition, a determination of in-state status is only valid for a term in which a student is registered. Once a petition has been filed, it may take up to six weeks for an initial decision. During this period of time, or any further period of time required by the university, any fees and charges based on the previous determination must be paid. The student is solely responsible for any late charges incurred by the residency process. If the determination is changed, any excess fees and charges will be refunded. All correspondence from Residency Reclassification Services will be sent by email to the email address that the student has on file with the university. Email is the official form of communication for the University of Maryland. Students should review their inbox and spam folders to ensure receipt of all communication sent from Residency Reclassification Services.

Students classified as in-state for admission and tuition purposes are responsible for notifying Residency Reclassification Services in writing within 15 days of any change in their circumstances that might in any way affect their classification at the University of Maryland.

University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

Doesn’t show you acceptance by major, and certainly chatgpt wouldn’t have it.

This is in no way factual nor correct. Do not spread that falsity.

Anyone here attend an admitted student open house? There’s one more on the calendar (April 8) and my son (Smith school of business) wants to attend, but admissions tells him they are at capacity and not accepting any more registrations. I’m curious to know if he’s missing out on worthwhile event.

We attended Admitted Student Day on March 1 for CS. Very well done presentations. Seemed like there are lots of research and club opportunities for kids.

We ate at the Yahentamitsi dining hall. Food was quite good. Given that we had eaten at UMass, known for the reputation of its food, last weekend, this was a pleasant surprise.

The campus has serious construction going on, about the only downside we could find.

We were there on Monday March 25 and had similar reactions. I was surprised at how nice the campus was…lots of green spaces, the brick buildings looked great and students/faculty were friendly. Downsides were the extensive construction (seemed like the entire campus and even locations near campus are all under construction at once) and we weren’t thrilled about College Park as a town - just didn’t seem like much around except strip malls and office buildings. But overall a positive visit!

We attended Admitted Students Day on March 11 and it helped move UMD into the top 2 for S24. We didn’t have time to visit a dining hall but we attended sessions for every program to which he was invited and they were very well done. If you can get in, I highly recommend.

Is UMD’s commit date still May 15th? One of our schools is now June 1st.

Yes. It still shows May 15th. Some privates have May 1st, Some have June 1st. So important to keep track of various commit dates if you are considering multiple colleges.

Has anyone received departmental scholarships from college of Engineering recently? My S24 hasn’t. Not sure if that means he is not getting any.

Are freshmen eligible for those awards? Did your son have to apply?

I know that the Agricultural college said by April 1st.

During the admitted student tour day, we were told that all freshmen, at least for Engineering, are eligible for those awards. There are no separate applications.

Engineering college said by April 1st too. I guess no news is bad news.

Regular Decisions are out.

Facade models

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the undergraduate degree programs in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (MAPP) at the University of Maryland. All prospective students must apply through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions . If you are interested in pursuing architecture as your major at the University of Maryland, make sure that you indicate this on your undergraduate admissions application. The Bachelor of Science degree is more restrictive than the Bachelor of Arts degree, and placement into this program depends on the degree placement review process that occurs during the student’s first studio course.

Undergraduate Admissions sponsors many events throughout the year for prospective students. We encourage you to visit campus!  Explore opportunities for visiting Maryland on the Admissions website .

Degree Placement Review Process

In order to determine the degree placement of each student (B.A. or B.S.), current students and incoming transfer students need to apply through the Degree Placement Review Process.

Current UMD Students:

All students admitted to the Architecture program prior to Degree Placement Review Process are Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A.) students. During students’ sophomore Spring semester (while enrolled in ARCH400), students can elect to submit an application to the Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.S.) degree.

Transfer Students:

All transfer students who come into the Architecture program prior to the Degree Placement Review start as Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A.) students. If a student has taken the proper equivalent prerequisite coursework, students may elect to apply for the Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.S.) degree during the Spring semester, for the following Fall.

All transfer students must be admitted by the University of Maryland, in addition to the Architecture program requirements. University admissions information can be found on the  University's website .

B.S. Application Documents:

Students must submit the documents outlined on the  BS ARCH Application Cover Sheet , including the cover sheet page, unofficial transcript, resume, essay, portfolio and optional letter of circumstance. Portfolio requirements can be found in this document:  BS ARCH Portfolio Requirements .

This evaluation of this application will determine the student's degree placement. This decision is based on academic performance, portfolio evaluation, professional aspirations and skill levels, as evaluated by Architecture program faculty.

For Fall 2024, the deadline to apply for the Bachelor of Science is April 12, 2024 . Please fill out this  form  before the deadline to be considered.

Transfer Students

All transfer students who gain admission into the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation will be placed onto the Bachelor of Arts track.

All transfer applicants should list Architecture Bachelor of Art as your intended major on the application.

To be considered for the Bachelor of Science track, students must participate in the Degree Placement Process. Please read the section entitled Degree Placement Process to learn more.

Pre-Transfer

The Pre-Transfer Advising program provides support to prospective transfer students from two-year and four-year schools before they apply to the University of Maryland to complete an undergraduate degree. Students are encouraged to use pre-transfer advising services to assess their readiness to transfer and estimate their time to degree completion. To sign up for a pre-transfer advising appointment, please visit: https://www.pretransferadvising.umd.edu/ .

Transfer Credits

The transfer credit evaluation process usually begins for newly admitted students two weeks after you receive your admission letter. To learn more about this process, please visit the Transfer Credit Services website .

The Graduate School logo

The University of Maryland (UMD) is committed to our graduate students and to the more than 230 programs in which they are enrolled. Our graduate student community consists of approximately 10,500 students, 4,600 of whom are pursuing a PhD, 5,200 who are enrolled in traditional and professional master’s programs , and nearly 700 who are not yet seeking a degree but are enrolled in graduate courses or certificate programs . International students make up more than 40 percent of our graduate student population, women comprise close to 50 percent, and minorities comprise nearly 20 percent. We pride ourselves on our diverse and stimulating campus culture.

In many ways, graduate study is an apprenticeship. To be successful, you must commit to hours of concentrated work, independent research, and original writing. Graduate work takes time, patience, focus, discipline, and the willingness to make many personal sacrifices. Despite those challenges, the UMD campus, the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and the graduate student community can provide a most agreeable environment.

We are delighted that you are considering a graduate program at the University of Maryland, College Park. We offer a wide array of distinguished programs in many disciplines, and we encourage you to explore them to find the one that best aligns with your interests. Please be sure to read all instructions and requirements carefully to ensure a proper and complete application, and to avoid mistakes that may delay the consideration of your application. Information for Specific Student Groups

We are committed to making the residence halls a welcoming place where each person has a rightful place within our community. We support the academic and social success of all our residents.

Our staff works closely with students who bring different identities to their residence hall experience on housing assignments. Please contact Michelle McCubbin directly at (301) 314-9555 or via email at  [email protected]  to understand the options available to you and to explore different housing options.

Campus Housing Options

Students can choose among three gender options for their residence hall housing assignment:

  • Single Gender:  Rooms, floors, wings, semi-suites, suites, and apartments that are assigned by sex. Students residing in these assignments share a bedroom and bathroom with students of the same sex or gender.
  • Mixed Gender:  Students live in a room with a student of the same sex or gender, but the room may be next to a room that is occupied by students of different sex or gender. On traditional hall floors, community bathrooms are designated as male or female.  Suite and apartment bathroom designations are determined by residents.
  • Gender Inclusive:  A housing option where students, regardless of sex, gender, or gender identity, share the same bedroom. Gender-inclusive traditional hall rooms and semi-suites have a private bathroom. Suite and apartment bathroom designations are determined by residents.

We also offer the following housing types across campus:

  • Traditional Hall Rooms with Community Bathrooms : traditional residence halls have single, double, triple and quad rooms that are shared with other residents. Residents share one large community bathroom with several toilet stalls, shower stalls, and sinks.  Most first year students live in traditional halls.
  • Suites and Apartments : suites and apartments have several bedrooms (single, double, and a small number of triple rooms) in an individual unit, with a common room shared by all residents. Most bathrooms in suites and apartments are single use bathrooms that are shared among all the residents in that unit. Apartments have a kitchen in addition to the common room. Most suites and apartments are occupied by second, third, and fourth year students.
  • Semi-Suites : semi-suites have two adjoining double rooms and a shared bathroom. Residents have access to a semi-private bathroom shared by no more than four students. Most semi-suites are occupied for second and third year students.
  • Mixed-Gender Apartment Living in Campus Affiliated Apartment Communities : eligible students (typically third and fourth year students) can select  mixed gender apartments at South Campus Commons and The Courtyards .

Our community provides a strong support system to help you settle into campus life and your new home away from home. Most first-year students live in residence halls in doubles, triples or quad rooms, shared with one or more roommates. Returning students typically live in single rooms, apartments or suites.

Over Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break, international students can request to stay in the residence halls. We have many halls that remain open for the break periods. If your hall is closed during breaks, you will be temporarily reassigned to a floor lounge in another residence hall.

We work closely with the International Student & Scholars Services (ISSS) office to organize an orientation that covers housing options for all incoming international students. Please visit the ISSS website for additional resources.

We recommend that international students purchase a dining plan and explore the wide variety of delicious and healthy food in the dining halls, cafés, convenience shops, concession stands, and food courts on campus.

Check out our YouTube videos about what it’s like to live on campus and to find more information on moving in, roommate relationships, and more.

Graduate Gardens and Graduate Hills are two graduate student apartment communities located on University property and managed by Southern Management Corporation.

Update to Enrollment Confirmation Deadline

Due to the shifted FAFSA 2024-2025 timeline;

1. We have extended our 2024-25 FAFSA filing priority deadline   to April 1, 2024 .

2. We have extended our freshmen Fall 2024 enrollment confirmation deadline   to May 15, 2024

Limited Enrollment Programs

Several majors at the University of Maryland (UMD) are considered  Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP). These programs have limited space and, therefore, have more competitive admission criteria beyond the university’s general requirements.

Students pursuing these majors may need to complete a series of "gateway requirements" specific to the major they are interested in. This can include completing certain courses, maintaining a specific GPA, etc.

Applying to an LEP

Prospective students should indicate their preferred major when completing their online application for admission. However, your preferred major does not affect your admissibility to the university. Admitted students who selected an LEP as their major are reviewed by the specific program to determine admission to that major.

While the majority of students are admitted to their preferred major, some LEP applicants may not be. Students who are admitted to UMD but not their preferred LEP major are placed in Letters & Sciences , where they will work with an advisor to meet the gateway requirements to earn admission to that major.

Admitted students who did not select an LEP major are admitted directly to the major indicated on their application. All major decisions are included in the applicant's admission decision letter.

Current students, or internal transfers, who would like to change their major to an LEP must apply to do so.

Learn more about LEP admission for current students .
