How to Write a XAT Essay?

Students usually ask how many words to write for the XAT Essay. The amount of content should be looked at in something other than words. Instead, it should be looked at as three distinct paragraphs. A minimum of 16 lines are needed, and the recommended number of lines lies between 16 - and 20.

The first paragraph should contain the context. The section should be around 5 - 6 lines.

(ii)  Supporting Sentences : These sentences are supposed to elaborate upon the central idea of the paragraph. You can use 50-60 words in each paragraph to support the theme of this para.

(iii) Concluding Sentence : Finally comes a concluding line of para. This needs to be carefully written because it not only summarises your whole idea of including this issue in the essay but will also give a hint of what next is to be talked about. In order to maintain the logical flow of the paras to be followed, the concluding line has to be crafted carefully.

Keep Essay Grammatically Correct

For XAT essays, it is very important that you ensure that the essay is grammatically correct. When you appear for one of the toughest exams to get into one of the top MBA institutes of India, an essay will act as a silent salesman of your personality.

Aspects such as grammar, punctuation and spelling errors can ruin your percentile and thereby chances of final selection. Taking care of these aspects will help you gain an edge over the competition. When the next time you practise for the XAT essay, keep in mind that the essay is free from such trivial yet important errors.

Spare a few minutes for Proofreading

Proofreading is an essential part of any piece of writing that goes for final submission. And when it is XAT essay, do not miss out on this ritual because at times, we naturally tend to make mistakes. It is not a good idea to submit an essay that has a potential to fetch you good marks but lands you in no man’s land with poor scores.

Recapitulating Tips to master XAT Essay

So before you head on to write the XAT Essay, let is recapitulate some easy tips to help you grab good grades.

1. Always write the essay in paragraphs and make sure that the flow of content is logical. Do not provide the content haphazardly to confuse the examiner. This will only pull down the quality of your paragraph and won’t fetch you good grades.

2. Do not mention same idea in each paragraph. Different paragraphs should express different ideas on the chosen topic. Your paragraphs should appear like tributaries of a river that contributes their water in one river. All your paras should vary in terms of the content but must contribute to the main idea.

3. Practise a lot! Yes, without practising you will not be able to provide an outstanding essay for submission. Essay writing is an art and even if you do not excel at it, you can master it with regular practise.

4. Keep your paras free from grammatical errors. Do not write sentences that the examiner doesn’t understand. Keep the sentences short and crisp. Do not use too many technical jargons that deviates the true essence of the topic.

5. One of the most essential requirements is your hand-writing. A legible hand-writing will fetch you wonderful grades. If the evaluator found it difficult to read the content, you might loose on marks because he/she won’t be able to contact you to gain an understanding of your illegible hand-writing. Groom your handwriting skills if you are bad at it.

XLRI Jamshedpur specified the XAT 2024 exam pattern on its official website. According to the official XAT 2024 paper pattern, the exam had three parts with time limits. The XAT entrance exam was conducted as a computer-based test on January 7, 2024, from 2 PM to 5:30 PM. The duration of the XAT 2024 was 210 min (Part I - 175 min; Part II - 5 min; Part III - 30 min). The XAT exam was held in the English language only. Part I of the XAT 2024 question paper comprised Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA & LR), Decision-making (DM), and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI). Part II was a 5-minute session of mock keyboard testing and Part III had a General Knowledge (GK) section along with an Analytical Essay Writing (AEW). The PwD candidates will be granted an additional 20 minutes for every hour.

The XAT paper had a total of 103 MCQ and 3 essay topic out of which candidates had to choose one. The XAT pattern also mentions the type and number of questions that were asked in the exam. XAT is a national-level entrance exam for MBA admissions, conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and is normally categorized into tough standards. XLRI changed the XAT 2024 exam timing from morning to afternoon. XAT exam 2024 was conducted from 2 PM to 5:30 PM instead of 9:30 AM to 12:40 PM.

As per the trends of the XAT paper pattern, the total number of questions that was asked in XAT 2024 was 103+1 AEW. The XAT exam pattern had questions multiple choice-based questions. The sections from which questions were asked in the XAT exam are- Decision-making making, Verbal & Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge along with the Essay Writing section. Section-Wise XAT Question Pattern: XAT Pattern 2024

One of the key aspects of the XAT exam paper is the marking scheme. The XAT marking scheme pattern is different from other test papers. There is no XAT negative marking for questions asked in the General Knowledge sections. However, there is a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. In addition to this, if the candidate leaves 8 questions unattempted then the negative marking of 0.10 marks is done. Check out the marking scheme of XAT.

• One mark will be awarded for each right answer to XAT
• - 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer
• - 0.10 marks will be deducted for more than eight unanswered questions
• There will be no negative marking in XAT in the General Knowledge (GK) section

The scores of the General Knowledge section will not be considered for calculating the XAT score

Candidates appearing for the XAT 2024 exam must be aware of the following changes in the exam pattern:

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions have been introduced.

In the redesigned XAT exam pattern, each unattempted question after the first 8 will result in a negative marking penalty of 0.10 marks.

The time of the XAT 2024 exam has been changed from 9.30 AM to 12.40 PM. The time duration for the XAT exam has been extended. Instead of three hours, the XAT 2024 exam will now run for three hours and thirty minutes.

The total number of questions has gone up from 99 to 101.

The descriptive essay test, which was discontinued in 2019, has been reintroduced. Now there will be both MCQs and descriptive questions.

The XAT 2024 exam paper will have 4 MCQ sections and 1 essay writing section.

Percentiles will not be determined by taking into account the GK section having 25 questions.

The general knowledge and essay writing portions will not carry any negative marking.

There were five options for each MCQ, but only one of them is correct.

The essay of each candidate will be assessed after they have been chosen for the interview process.

The countdown counter at the top, right-hand side of the screen displays how much time is available for you to complete the examination for the part of the question paper you are answering (Part 1/Part 2).

After the allotted 165 minutes are completed, Part 1 will be locked. You will be moved to Part 2, the section of the exam that includes the general knowledge and essay questions.

For the initial part of the XAT exam (the first three sections), the scribe will get an additional 25 minutes in 2024.

Candidates were not permitted to leave the examination center before the XAT 2024 exam is finished.

PwD applicants could submit their responses at any time between 165 and 220 minutes for Part 1 and between 15 and 20 minutes for Part 2 of the exam. A PwD candidate could therefore leave the lab after 180 minutes.

As of right now, the XAT paper format for 2024 will have five sections, 100 MCQs, and one descriptive essay. Accordingly, there will be a total of 101 questions in the updated XAT exam pattern for 2024.

Yes, there will be an essay writing test in XAT 2024. The essay writing test has a 25-minute time limit, which the applicant must adhere to. The XAT 2024 essay writing test should have a 150–200 word limit. The XAT essay writing test does not have any negative marking. The last question on the XAT exam is a question on essay writing.

XAT 2024 will have a total of five sections. In order to establish your percentile and merit position, the XAT syllabus for 2024 will use essential topics from areas such as Verbal and Logical Ability (VA & LR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation (QA & DI), General Knowledge (GK) and Essay Writing.

In the General Knowledge section of XAT 2024, a total of 25 MCQ-style questions will be asked. The questions are drawn from the most pertinent areas of business, economics, and current affairs, among others. Along with the other three categories, XAT GK questions will be a significant component of the XAT 2024 computer-based online test and the application procedure for XLRI.

Yes, XAT 2024 has a negative marking. Candidates must properly understand the XAT format and pattern in order to succeed. Every appropriate response gives one mark. After 8 failed attempts, 0.10 of your total score is deducted. Each wrong response leads to a 0.25 point negative marking.

XAT Essay Writing is an important section which a candidate must know to attempt well in order to do well in the examination. College Essay Writing is a section which a candidate has to do well in addition to the section on General Knowledge. General Knowledge as a section is manageable wherein a candidate would have to answer 25 questions based on Current and Static affairs. The candidates would be having about 20-25 minutes to note down their views in a comprehensive manner to convince the examiner about their course of thought. 

However, as easier as it may seem while reading, XAT Essay writing, in general, is not an easy section that can be done by candidates as it requires them to write a well-connected essay putting forward thoughts that represent a comprehensive viewpoint on whatever the topic that needs to be detailed. In addition to this, a candidate is also under enough pressure of adhering to the word limit.

The candidates would have to read and understand various issues comprehensively to write an essay that explores well enough on the length and breadth of the topic that they choose to write. The following are a few tips that are mentioned below for candidates to ensure a proper preparation:

• English Newspapers and Editorials need to be read from time to time to be abreast of Latest Developments.
• A lot of snippets and news should also be read from Current Affairs Magazines and Fiction novels.
• Vocabulary and English Grammar needs to be strengthened effectively.
• The candidate is required to practice error-free writing and writing speed to be able to collate thoughts in a limited time-frame.
• XAT would be conducted in an online mode, therefore, essays must be practiced on a computer.

Earlier, generic essay topics for candidates would be given in the exam wherein the candidates could explore enough and discuss a lot of views without specific knowledge. But from this session onwards, topics like Demonetization, Goods and Services Tax, Nationalism and Cow Slaughter would be mentioned where it would become necessary for candidates to read in advance and know adequate about the issue to give a detailed essay which explores the premise, discusses his opinion on the same detail with a conclusion apt for the title given.

Following are a few tips that must be followed by the candidates to do well in XAT 2018 Essay Writing Section:

• Give a good structure to your essay - Introduction, Body and Conclusion. 
• Shorter sentences would have to be written as longer sentences may digress the point that is required to be made.
• The candidate is also required to write in paragraphs as opposed to abbreviations and improper language.
• Quotes and relevant references are required to be quoted right to do well in the essay writing section.
• The candidate is required to think through calmly while writing an essay.

The Word Limit in Academic Writing (and How to Stick to It)

Even the phrase “word limit” can cause panic among students . For some it’s the challenge of writing enough, while others find it hard to stick within the limit given. In either case, it can lead to spending more time worrying about the length of your paper than the content!

But why do college papers come with set word limits? And what should you do to ensure you don’t write too much or too little?

Why Have a Word Limit?

There are two main reasons that academic papers usually come with a word limit:

• Fairness It’s impossible to grade two papers of vastly different lengths (e.g., 20,000 compared to 2,000 words) on the same scale. The word limit makes sure that everyone taking the same class knows what is expected of them.
• Communication Skills As well as testing your knowledge, college papers are about communicating clearly and concisely. Setting a word limit forces you to consider what you’re saying more carefully, helping you to develop your writing skills.

Sticking to the word limit is, therefore, part of being a good academic, since being a long way over or under could suggest you’ve misjudged the scope of the essay topic or that you’re having trouble communicating your ideas.

How to Stick to the Word Limit

Although many colleges give you roughly 10% leeway on the word limit, you should aim for your finished paper to be as close to the suggested word count as possible. If you find yourself writing too much, you can reduce the word count by:

• Editing out repetition, redundant words and padding phrases
• Cutting down long or unnecessary quotations
• Reducing the number of examples or case studies used (if you’ve included several)
• Using the active voice instead of the passive voice

More generally, you should re-read your work and eliminate anything that isn’t directly related to the question you’re answering. As well as helping you stick to the word limit, this will make your work more focused, which could boost your grades.

How to Increase Your Word Count

If you’re struggling to write enough, the temptation might be to add padding phrases like “in my opinion” or long block quotations until you hit the minimum word count. But this will simply detract from the clarity of your writing.

Instead, the answer is usually to go back over your work and look for things that could be improved with a little additional attention. This might involve:

• Addressing anything from your essay question that you’ve overlooked
• Adding illustrative examples to support a point
• Considering different sources and views on the same issue
• Using short quotations as evidence for your arguments

Moreover, whether you’ve written too much or too little, getting someone else to read your work and offer feedback is a fantastic idea (especially if you ask a professional for help). This will help you to identify areas that could be expanded or cut in the next draft, so eventually you should be able to get your essay to the required length.

Once, you have framed the answer, match your answer with the options given. Most often, if you have used proper reasoning, you will be able to match your answer with one of the options and arrive at the correct solution.

Eliminate incorrect options The questions in XAT have five options for each question. But not all the five options are relevant. After a basic reading of the question you can start eliminating the options and in most cases, you would be able to eliminate at least two options.

XAT preparation time of three months is not short. What you have done in last three months or whatever you have prepared can be revised now in three months with various XAT preparation tools. The time is ripe to intensify a little your XAT preparation strategy for three months:

• See that you have achieved good clarity on fundamentals and have strengthened your basics

• It is time that you started taking XAT Mock test, analyse your errors and rectify them

8.3 How to prepare for XAT 2024 in 2 months?

It may sound a little surprising but it is true. Many XAT toppers are of the view that XAT preparation time of two months is good enough to crack XAT exam. Even 2 months are good to score 95 percentile provided you are sincere enough.

• Focus more on XAT Exam Quiz, XAT Mock tests, different types of questions as appeared in XAT
• Don’t leave any XAT Mock Test without analyzing it
• Go through the Books for XAT preparation and the XAT preparation material and ensure  that you have gone through the sectional and overall quiz and practice tests in these XAT preparation books.
• There are some strong areas within your weak areas and some weak areas within your strong areas. Try to focus on all the weak areas and see if you are able to improve them. However, you should not waste more time on them. Instead focus more on your strong areas and improve them further.
