Simple Flying

Why is easyjet's iata code u2.

Such codes don't always correspond to the name of their holder in a straightforward manner.

  • easyJet had to settle for the IATA code U2 because other preferred options, such as EJ and EZ, were already in use by other airlines.
  • easyJet's foreign subsidiaries, easyJet Switzerland and easyJet Europe, have different IATA codes (DS and EC) to distinguish themselves as separate entities.
  • Other airlines, like All Nippon Airways and Icelandair, also have IATA codes that don't directly relate to their names, highlighting the historical significance behind their codes.

Readers who have flown with easyJet will know that the Luton-based low-cost carrier's flight numbers generally start with the IATA code U2. This designation stands out in a world where many major airlines' IATA codes correspond directly to their names, such as AF for Air France or BA for British Airways. But why does it exist?

Preferred options were already in use

While the orange-liveried budget airline is a huge player in European aviation today, its origins were rather more humble. easyJet came into existence 28 years ago in 1995, at which point it had a fleet of just two leased Boeing 737-200s that it used on two Anglo-Scottish routes, connecting Luton Airport with Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Upon its establishment, easyJet needed an IATA code to prefix its flight numbers. For passengers of the new airline, this would perhaps have been most easily identifiable if the letters corresponded to the two words that combined to make the carrier's name. However, as it belongs to New England Airlines, EJ was already taken.

EZ could have also worked phonetically, as it sounds like 'easy' with American-English pronunciations of the two letters. However, this was also already in use at Scandinavian carrier Sun-Air. As such, easyJet had to settle for U2. According to a discussion on Aviation Stack Exchange, this is not a reference to the legendary Irish rock band of the same name, but, instead, it was simply a random allocation.

Foreign subsidiaries have different codes

Of course, today's easyJet Group consists of more than just its UK-based arm. Indeed, the budget giant also has subsidiaries based in Geneva and Vienna. As different airlines in their own right, these branches also have different codes.

easyJet Switzerland is the older of the pair, having come about in 1998 when easyJet bought 40% of Swiss carrier TEA Switzerland. Today, this airline's IATA code is DS, although data from ATDB.aero shows that it used to be BH, which was inherited from TEA Switzerland. Its ICAO code is the more straightforward EZS.

Meanwhile, Vienna-based easyJet Europe is a newer venture, having existed since 2017. It came about after easyJet decided to establish an EU subsidiary following the UK's decision to leave the European Union. This would allow it to continue operating flights between EU nations. Its IATA code is EC.

Some other carriers also have less obvious codes

easyJet is far from the only airline with an IATA code that doesn't appear to relate to its name directly. Indeed, FlightRadar24.com notes that All Nippon Airways' (ANA) code of NH refers to the carrier's former name, Nippon Helicopter.

Similarly, Icelandair's seemingly-random code of FI actually refers to Flugfélag Íslands, which merged with Loftleiðir Icelandic in the 1970s to become Icelandair. El Al's use of LY is also a tribute to its history, as this particular code refers to Lydda, the former name of its hub at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport.

easyJet launches online pilot aptitude test to find next generation of recruits

easyJet pilot recruitment

Low-cost carrier easyJet has launched a new online pilot aptitude test as the airline looks to find the next generation of aviators.

The test is part of a pan-European recruitment campaign designed to expel the myths about the type of people that can become pilots and encourage more applicants from underrepresented groups.

The new test is being rolled out online targeting female audiences, who can logon to the easyJet website to take part in a ‘ Reaction Speed ’ and ‘S ense of Direction ’ assessment.

The online test assesses some of the key skills required to become an airline pilot and has been designed to encourage more people to consider a flying career.

EasyJet conducted a poll across the United Kingdom (UK) and discovered that 57% believe that a university degree is required to become a pilot and 80% think that 20/20 vision is a necessity – neither of which is true.

In fact, 50% of British people asked had no idea what qualifications were needed to become an airline pilot and learn to fly a commercial jet.

The new campaign kicked off on April 3, 2024, in Central London where real life easyJet pilot Captain Sarah Ackerley was strapped to a huge billboard to answer questions about flying passenger planes for a living.

More than half (59%) of British adults surveyed still believe there are misconceptions that a pilot is a job for a man.

“Tackling gender stereotyping within aviation has been a long-standing mission for easyJet and I’m excited to be part of this latest campaign that’s allowing people to get a real insight into what skills are really important to do this job and encourage more women into the profession,” Captain Ackerley said.

She added: “It’s an immensely rewarding career that I’m proud to champion and I hope by more people taking our new interactive test, they can challenge themselves to discover a talent they never knew they had and I hope to see them flying with us in the future.”

2024 Pilot Training Program

The test and billboard were launched ahead of the opening of easyJet’s 2024 Pilot Training Program in the coming weeks.

The airline’s pilot training program takes aspiring pilots with little to no flying experience to operating a commercial passenger jet in around two years with its intensive, industry-leading training course.

To apply to easyJet’s Pilot Training Program, aspiring pilots need to be aged 18 or over by the time they begin training and have a minimum of five General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) of Grade C or above (or equivalent), including mathematics, science, and English language – no higher qualifications or degrees are required.

To register interest for easyJet’s Pilot Training Program or to simply find out more, visit CAE & easyJet – Are you a future airline pilot?

7.5% of easyJet’s pilots in in the UK are women, compared to the UK industry average of 6.5% with around 300 women including 99 captains now flying for the airline.

Women encouraged to take easyJet aptitude tests in bid to have more female pilots

  • Gatwick Airport
  • Wednesday 3 April 2024 at 6:08pm

easyjet airline code

WATCH: ITV Meridian's Sally Simmonds has been to meet two pilots and try the controls of a simulator at their training base in Crawley.

The UK's biggest airline, easyJet, is launching a new campaign to encourage more female pilots and first officers into the aviation industry.

Fewer than 10% are currently women and more than half of British adults still believe a pilot is a job for a man.

The airline, which is Gatwick's biggest, has rolled out two online tests so more people can 'find their wings'.

The new aptitude tests assess some of the key skills needed to become an airline pilot and has been designed to encourage more people to consider the career.

Anyone can take the test, as they aim to attract 200 more to the profession this spring.

It's the first time the airline has run such a recruitment campaign as they aim to dispel preconceived ideas about the qualifications needed on the flight deck.

The two online tests are for sense of direction and reaction speed .

The company employs 4000 pilots of which 300 are women, which is about 7.5%. That's slightly higher than the British average of 6.5% but the industry is keen to diversify.

Qualifying to be a pilot takes about two years including ground school training, simulator flying, single engine flying and supervised flying and pilots retrain every 6 months.

easyJet Captain Sarah Ackerley, said: "Tackling gender stereotyping within aviation has been a long-standing mission for easyJet and I’m excited to be part of this latest campaign that’s allowing people to get a real insight into what skills are really important to do this job, and encourage more women into the profession.

"It’s an immensely rewarding career that I’m proud to champion and I hope by more people taking our new interactive test, they can challenge themselves to discover a talent they never knew they had and I hope to see them flying with us in the future."

Jet2, Ryanair, EasyJet and TUI passengers could be kicked off flights due to tarmac rule

Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and Easyjet passengers have been warned they could be kicked off flights due to a little-known rule after a dad was removed from a Jetstar flight

Passengers on popular budget airlines could find themselves kicked off if they breach a little known rule.

Those flying on Jet2, Ryanair , easyJet, and TUI could face being removed from flights due to a lesser-known rule about taking photos on the tarmac. A holidaymaker's viral TikTok video has warned passengers of these airlines about this rule after he was ejected from a flight for an innocent mistake.

Jimmy Mitchell was asked to get off a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Brisbane and shared his stressful experience on social media while waiting for further instructions at the airport terminal, reports Birmingham Live .

The dad had taken out his phone to capture a last-minute photo of his wife, Pauline, and their two children as they boarded the plane. However, an announcement had been made that passengers were not allowed to use phones on the tarmac while the plane was refuelling.

After being removed from the plane, Mr Mitchell expressed his frustration, saying: "This is the worst experience I've ever had flying. I try and get on the plane, I take a photo of my kids as they get on the plane, in flight mode, and the lady calls me an idiot.

"I turned around in disbelief because I was half way up the stairs at this point. I basically stormed over to her and I was like, 'Are you serious? What did you just call me? '. She was basically saying 'you can't take photos on the tarmac, you can't take photos on the tarmac'."

Jimmy said the situation could have been resolved better had he just been asked to get off his phone.

Generally speaking, the security zones of airports and the tarmac are two areas in particular where people are told to put their phones away. Although there is now law against taking photographs in a public space, airports in the UK are private meaning they have the right to ban photography - which most do, particularly in secure areas.

When not in a secure area, and when done for personal, not commercial use, it's generally accepted. Pre-Customs Arrivals areas generally have security restrictions on electronic devices and photography. Generally airlines and airport workers can and will use their discretion to decide when to allow photography and when to ask passengers to stop,

According to Jetstar, phones are not allowed to be used while on the tarmac "as this is an operational space and we remind customers of this via gate PAs". A spokesperson for the airline said: "All our customers and team members have the right to feel respected when flying with us or when at work and we’re looking into what took place in this instance."

You're going to pay more to check a bag on JetBlue this summer

  • JetBlue's checked bag fees change depending on when you travel.
  • Bookings from March 22 now account for peak and off-peak seasons.
  • It costs $5 more to check your first bag during peak season, and $10 for your second bag.

Insider Today

JetBlue has introduced dynamic pricing to its checked-bag fees.

It follows moves from major carriers like United and American Airlines, which upped their prices back in February.

However, the low-cost carrier's plan is more similar to that of Wendy's , which said its menu items would change prices throughout the day — it later clarified that this is to enable it to offer discounts during slower parts of the day rather than to increase prices.

Flight tickets are typically priced dynamically, changing depending on demand and how long you wait to book. But it is less common for ancillary fees, like those for checked baggage .

JetBlue's baggage information website now explains how prices change depending on peak season, where you're flying, and whether you included them before check-in.

From March 22, traveling during JetBlue's peak season means it will cost an extra $5 to check your first bag. A second one costs $10 more than during off-peak dates.

The next period defined by the airline as peak is from April 11 to April 29. After that, it's the main summer period from June to early September, as well as dates around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Checked bags are made more expensive if you're on a transatlantic flight. During off-peak season, it costs $60 to check in a bag instead of the $35 when traveling within North America.

And if a passenger forgets to add checked baggage 24 hours before a flight, it will cost an extra $10 on domestic routes.

This sort of dynamic pricing is more common when traveling with European budget airlines.

For example, easyJet says its checked bag fees, "vary depending on the route selected, flight and time of booking." At the Irish ultra-low-lost carrier Ryanair, a 10kg bag (22 pounds) could cost anywhere between $15 and $37 if you buy it at the time of booking.
