Who Is Winning the War in Ukraine 2023? – Example Essay on a Current Topic

Since 2014, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine has been a major topic worldwide. The war has claimed thousands of lives and has far-reaching consequences for Ukraine’s independence, Europe’s security, and global democracy. This essay examines the complicated dynamics of Ukraine's war, its roots, the current situation (as of late summer 2023), and the broader ramifications for Ukrainian independence, European security, and worldwide democracy. This essay's key focus areas are the Russian invasion's prerequisites, the current state of things in the war, and the significance of Ukraine's triumph.

Prerequisites of the Russian Invasion

The roots of the conflict in Ukraine can be traced back to centuries of complex historical ties between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse ethnic makeup, has often found itself at the center of regional power struggles. Between several short periods of independence, Ukraine has been several times conquered and divided by neighboring countries, including Russia. As a result, Ukraine was a part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. A long and tangled history between the two countries seemed to take a new turn in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR, mutual recognition, border agreements, and the Budapest memorandum, with which Russia (along with the US and the UK) assured Ukraine’s security in exchange of the country giving up the third nuclear arsenal in the world. However, in 2014, Russia invaded Ukraine, annexed the Crimean Peninsula, and initiated and backed armed conflict in the Donbas region. This was a major event preceding the all-out invasion in 2022, while ethnic tensions and political instability were other causes of the conflict [1].

As the crisis has been ongoing since 2014, it has been nearly impossible to discern who was actually winning. Military war, economic war, geographical gains, and psychological gains have all been assessed differently by experts [2]. On the one hand, Russia has gained territory due to the takeover of Crimea and the full-scale invasion in 2022. On the other hand, Ukraine has achieved substantial military advancements, and Russia's economic sanctions have significantly influenced the country's economy [1].

The Russia-initiated war has severely impacted the Ukrainian people, with thousands killed and millions displaced. Moreover, the battle – regardless of how it ends – is set to have far-reaching consequences for worldwide security and democracy.

The Current State of Affairs: Who Is Winning the War in Ukraine vs Russia

As of late summer 2023, the conflict in Ukraine is still underway, and territorial control is divided among several factions. Currently, around 20% of the Ukrainian territory remains under Russian occupation [3].

However, since the autumn of 2022, Ukraine has achieved substantial military victories, including recapturing several cities and towns. Plus, the sanctions against the Russian economy have also had a considerable influence on its economy, leading to its significant decline [1]. Then, in the summer of 2023, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive operation in the South. Although the Ukrainian troops are advancing reasonably slowly, they seem to set the scene for a breakthrough during the autumn months.

International attempts and peace talks have been attempted, but no long-term solution has been found. After the annexation of Crimea and an armed conflict in Donbas, peace talks have taken place in the Normandy model, which involved Ukraine, Russia, France, and Germany [1]. International actors, including the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, have also been engaged in peace negotiations to resolve the conflict. However, none of the efforts ended the conflict. With time, it became apparent that Russia had plans for a full-scale invasion long before the first peace talks even started. However, these talks allowed Ukraine to postpone the inevitable and prepare for it as well as possible.

Right now, it’s impossible to tell who is really winning the war in Ukraine. Despite heavy losses and a weakened economy, Russia still has the advantage in military equipment and personnel. That’s why Ukraine requires continued military help from other countries to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression. The United States has offered military assistance to Ukraine, including weapons and training, while European countries have also contributed [3].

While Ukraine's independence and sovereignty are at the heart of the conflict, the fundamentals of European security intertwine with the outcome of the war. A victory for Ukraine would mean preserving its territorial integrity and safeguarding its identity as a nation. However, the war’s result will have much broader implications.

The Importance of Ukraine's Victory for Global Security and Stability

Ukraine's win in the current war is critical to European security and stability. The fact is, the war itself has already had far-reaching ramifications for European security, as Ukraine is a crucial actor in the region between Russia and Europe. In case of Ukraine's defeat, Russia will then easily and readily use it as a platform to destabilize the European Union and NATO by provoking conflicts with Poland and Baltic states (Latvia, Litva, and Estonia).

Furthermore, Ukraine's support is critical for the entire international security system based on respecting the recognized countries’ borders. Otherwise, the principle of non-use or threat of force will be no longer viable, and the risk of a larger and stronger state attacking a weaker one will increase immensely. The most prominent example here would be the probable attack of China on Taiwan, causing the USA to get involved in direct conflict with another nuclear power.

Finally, supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression with arms, not just Reddit posts, is essential for sustaining democratic norms and deterring aggression [1]. The war in Ukraine is about more than just Ukraine; it is about the entire democratic globe. Failure to help Ukraine may empower Russia and other authoritarian or dictator regimes to escalate aggression in various parts of the world.

The war in Ukraine is still underway, and it is impossible to say at the moment who is winning. Military war, economic war, geographical and psychological gains have all been evaluated by experts [2][4]. Most of them stress that the success of Ukraine is critical for national survival, European stability, and even global security. Also, the support of Ukraine is critical for defending democratic values and deterring possible acts of aggression in other parts of the world [1]. The crisis demands ongoing international assistance, and a long-term solution must be found to ensure regional peace and stability. However, in the name of exemplification, stability, and stronger peace, this solution must come along with Ukraine’s victory and be based on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Thus, the United States and European countries must continue to help Ukraine in order to protect democratic values and deter Russian aggression.

The war in Ukraine is a multifaceted conflict with deep historical roots and far-reaching implications. Understanding its complexities is essential for assessing its trajectory and potential outcomes. Ukraine's victory is not merely a matter of territorial control but a symbol of the country's resilience and the defense of democratic values in the face of aggression. The world's democratic nations must stand united in their commitment to upholding the principles that Ukraine's struggle represents.

Just How Long Does It Take to Write 6 Pages? It’s Complicated.

Just How Long Does It Take to Write 6 Pages? It’s Complicated.

Do six-page essays and papers get assigned? Sure they do. And how many words is a 6-page paper? Well, 6 pages double spaced is somewhere between 1500 and 1650 words. And how long does it take to write 6 pages? Here are the variables:

  • How good is the writer? Those with skills tend to write much faster than those without
  • How much research is required?
  • What is the topic and the purpose? A primarily factual 6-page essay on a simple topic will obviously go faster than one that is argumentative and entails a more complex topic.

How to Write a 6-Page Paper

How to Write a 6-Page Paper

If you are assigned an essay or paper and your instructor designates a length of 6 pages, you will need to use the same process that you would use to write any essay or paper, but the restriction to six pages will impact exactly how you proceed.

  • Selecting a Topic

This may be the most difficult part of your task. You have to choose a topic that can be covered in six pages, obviously. This means picking a general topic area that you have an interest in and then narrowing that topic down to one that is manageable in six pages.

If you do have a topic area of great interest, you might want to a bit of research and look at sample essays or papers that are of the same approximate length, take a look at the topics those writers chose, and try to choose something comparable.

  • The Research

The other important aspect of how to write a six-page essay or paper does relate to research. Generally, the longer a paper is, the more sources should be used. The six-page length should probably have about four source materials. And, as is always the case with a college level work, it is critical to use high quality resources – primary if possible. If not primary, then secondary resources should be from known experts in the field.

  • Organizing the Research into Sub-Topics

This step is the same when you write any type of essay or paper that has required research. With a six-page paper, you may have three-four sub-topics, each of which will consume between four-five pages. The rest will be our introduction and conclusion.

  • The Rough Draft

One of the things that definitely does not change when you think about how to write a six-page paper is that you do not skip the important writing steps. The rough draft is just that – a rough draft. It is not your final piece. Write it and then take a break from it.

  • Review and Revise

Carefully review what you have written. Read it out loud to make sure it “sounds” right to you. Check your grammar and punctuation. Make sure it flows logically from one section to the next.

  • Write the Introduction Last

Your introduction should capture interest immediately – find a creative or shocking beginning and then lead your reader to your thesis statement.

So, how long does it take to write a 6-page paper? It really is complicated, and it does depend on you. Of course, if you need a fast solution for an urgent due date, you may want to find a writing service that can get it done well. Trying to devise a structure for your essay can be one of the most difficult parts of the writing process. Making a detailed outline before you begin writing is a good way to make sure your ideas come across in a clear and logical order. A good outline will also save you time in the revision process, reducing the possibility that your ideas will need to be rearranged once you've written them.

The First Steps

Before you can begin outlining, you need to have a sense of what you will argue in the essay. From your analysis and close readings of primary and/or secondary sources you should have notes, ideas, and possible quotes to cite as evidence. Let's say you are writing about the 1999 Republican Primary and you want to prove that each candidate's financial resources were the most important element in the race. At this point, your notes probably lack much coherent order. Most likely, your ideas are still in the order in which they occurred to you; your notes and possible quotes probably still adhere to the chronology of the sources you've examined. Your goal is to rearrange your ideas, notes, and quotes—the raw material of your essay—into an order that best supports your argument, not the arguments you've read in other people's works. To do this, you have to group your notes into categories and then arrange these categories in a logical order.

Generalizing

The first step is to look over each individual piece of information that you've written and assign it to a general category. Ask yourself, "If I were to file this in a database, what would I file it under?" If, using the example of the Republican Primary, you wrote down an observation about John McCain's views on health care, you might list it under the general category of  "Health care policy." As you go through your notes, try to reuse categories whenever possible. Your goal is to reduce your notes to no more than a page of category listings.

Now examine your category headings. Do any seem repetitive? Do any go together? "McCain's expenditure on ads" and "Bush's expenditure on ads," while not exactly repetitive, could easily combine into a more general category like "Candidates' expenditures on ads." Also, keep an eye out for categories that no longer seem to relate to your argument. Individual pieces of information that at first seemed important can begin to appear irrelevant when grouped into a general category.

Now it's time to generalize again. Examine all your categories and look for common themes. Go through each category and ask yourself, "If I were to place this piece of information in a file cabinet, what would I label that cabinet?" Again, try to reuse labels as often as possible: "Health Care," "Foreign Policy," and "Immigration" can all be contained under "Policy Initiatives." Make these larger categories as general as possible so that there are no more than three or four for a 7-10 page paper.

With your notes grouped into generalized categories, the process of ordering them should be easier. To begin, look at your most general categories. With your thesis in mind, try to find a way that the labels might be arranged in a sentence or two that supports your argument. Let's say your thesis is that financial resources played the most important role in the 1999 Republican Primary. Your four most general categories are "Policy Initiatives," "Financial Resources," "Voters' Concerns," and "Voters' Loyalty." You might come up with the following sentence: ÒAlthough McCain's policy initiatives were closest to the voters' concerns, Bush's financial resources won the voters' loyalty.Ó This sentence should reveal the order of your most general categories. You will begin with an examination of McCain's and Bush's views on important issues and compare them to the voters' top concerns. Then you'll look at both candidates' financial resources and show how Bush could win voters' loyalty through effective use of his resources, despite his less popular policy ideas.

With your most general categories in order, you now must order the smaller categories. To do so, arrange each smaller category into a sentence or two that will support the more general sentence you've just devised. Under the category of "Financial Resources," for instance, you might have the smaller categories of "Ad Expenditure," "Campaign Contributions" and "Fundraising." A sentence that supports your general argument might read: "Bush's early emphasis on fundraising led to greater campaign contributions, allowing him to have a greater ad expenditure than McCain."

The final step of the outlining process is to repeat this procedure on the smallest level, with the original notes that you took for your essay. To order what probably was an unwieldy and disorganized set of information at the beginning of this process, you need now only think of a sentence or two to support your general argument. Under the category "Fundraising," for example, you might have quotes about each candidate's estimation of its importance, statistics about the amount of time each candidate spent fundraising, and an idea about how the importance of fundraising never can be overestimated. Sentences to support your general argument might read: "No candidate has ever raised too much money [your idea]. While both McCain and Bush acknowledged the importance of fundraising [your quotes], the numbers clearly point to Bush as the superior fundraiser [your statistics]." The arrangement of your ideas, quotes, and statistics now should come naturally.

Putting It All Together

With these sentences, you have essentially constructed an outline for your essay. The most general ideas, which you organized in your first sentence, constitute the essay's sections. They follow the order in which you placed them in your sentence. The order of the smaller categories within each larger category (determined by your secondary sentences) indicates the order of the paragraphs within each section. Finally, your last set of sentences about your specific notes should show the order of the sentences within each paragraph. An outline for the essay about the 1999 Republican Primary (showing only the sections worked out here) would look something like this:

I. POLICY INITIATIVES

II.  VOTERS' CONCERNS

III.  FINANCIAL RESOURCES

            A.  Fundraising

                        a.  Original Idea

                        b.  McCain Quote/Bush Quote

                        c.  McCain Statistics/Bush Statistics

            B.  Campaign Contributions

            C.  Ad Expenditure

IV.  VOTERS' LOYALTY

How Many Words Is 6 Pages?

6 pages is 3000 words single-spaced or 1500 words double-spaced . Documents that typically are 6 pages include college essays, operating manuals, and longer form blog posts. A typical single-spaced page is 500 words long. It will take approximately 10 minutes to read 6 pages .

Welcome to Words per Page

Enter total number of words, type in your words.

There are times when it helps to know how many words per page you're writing. While a general guideline is one page is 500 words (single spaced) or 250 words (double spaced), this is a ballpark figure. The truth is the number of words per page depends on a variety of factors such as the type of font, the font size, spacing elements, margin spacing, and paragraph length to name a few. While it's not possible to take into all these factors when estimating how many words per page there will be for your writing, this calculator can give a more accurate words per page conversion estimate than the typical 250/500 ballpark figure .

The calculator is able to provide a more accurate conversion by taking into account more specific information. For example, you can choose from a different variety of common fonts to generate an estimate:

  • Comic Sans MS
  • Times New Roman

You can then choose your preferred spacing from the following options:

  • Single spaced
  • Double spaced

Finally, you can choose your preferred font size: 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14.

By using these three options to more accurately define your writing, the words per page calculator should provide a better estimate on how many words you need to write to fill a page. In the opposite direction, it can give a more accurate estimate of how many pages you have created if you only know the word count .

While we make every attempt to make our calculators as accurate as possible, the results won't be perfect. This converter addresses some issues to provide a more accurate estimate, but in the end, it's still an estimate. Other issues such as margin space and paragraph length will likely result in some variation from the calculations given. That being said, it should provide a more accurate indication of the number of pages a specific word count will be and the number of words per page you type when compared to the general rule of thumb.

For general information, the following are calculations using 12-point Arial font, double spaced:

How many pages is 500 words? 500 words is approximately 1.8 pages. How many pages is 750 words? 750 words is approximately 2.7 pages. How many pages is 1,000 words? 1,000 words is approximately 3.7 pages. How many pages is 1,250 words? 1,250 words is approximately 4.6 pages. How many pages is 1,500 words? 1,500 words is approximately 5.5 pages. How many pages is 2,000 words? 2,000 words is approximately 7.3 pages. How many pages is 2,500 words? 2,500 words is approximately 9.1 pages. How many pages is 3,000 words? 3,000 words is approximately 11 pages. How many pages is 4,000 words? 4,000 words is approximately 14.6 pages. How many pages is 5,000 words? 5,000 words is approximately 18.3 pages. How many pages is 7,500 words? 7,500 words is approximately 27.4 pages. How many pages is 10,000 words? 10,000 words is approximately 36.5 pages.

APA Format (6th ed.) for Academic Papers and Essays [Template]

Published on November 6, 2020 by Raimo Streefkerk . Revised on September 4, 2023.

In addition to guidelines for APA citations , there are format guidelines for academic papers and essays. They’re widely used by professionals, researchers and students.

Generate accurate APA citations with Scribbr

The most important APA format guidelines in the 6th edition are:

  • Use 12 pt Times New Roman
  • Set 1 inch page margins
  • Apply double line spacing
  • Insert a running head on every page
  • Indent every new paragraph ½ inch

  • Missing commas and periods
  • Incorrect usage of “et al.”
  • Ampersands (&) in narrative citations
  • Missing reference entries

essay 6 pages

In the header of each page you include the paper title and page number. If your paper title is longer than 50 characters you should use a shortened version as running head. The page number should be positioned in the top right-hand corner. On the title page the APA running head is preceded by the words “Running head:”.

APA running head example title page

Throughout your paper you use different heading levels. The levels ranging from one to five help structure the document. Major headings, or heading 1, are used for the titles of chapters such as “Methods” or “Results”. Heading levels two to five are used for subheadings. Each heading level is formatted differently. These are the APA heading guidelines :

Title case capitalization : Capitalize the first, last, and principal words. Sentence case capitalization : Capitalize only the first word and any proper nouns.

Note that you are not required to include a table of contents in APA style , but if you do choose to include one, all headings should be formatted as plain text, with an additional indent for each level.

The APA title page , also called cover page, is the first page of your paper. The regular formatting guidelines regarding font and margins apply. In addition, an APA formatted title page contains:

  • Running head including page number
  • Full paper title (in title case)
  • Author name(s), without titles and degrees
  • Institutional affiliation

Note: APA style has specific guidelines for including more than one author or institutional affiliation on the title page .

An APA abstract is a one paragraph (± 250 words) summary of your paper. It introduces the objective or problem statement of the paper and includes information on the method, research results, and conclusions of your research. In a separate article we explain in-depth how to write an abstract .

Although most regular APA formatting guidelines apply, the abstract page also has specific requirements. The abstract starts with a centered heading “Abstract”. In contrast to regular APA headings, no styling is applied. The first line of the paragraph is, unlike regular paragraphs, not indented.

At the end of the abstract, keywords relevant to the research are included. These keywords improve the findability of your paper in databases. Indent the line with keywords and start with the italicized word “Keyword:”, followed by the keywords.

The APA reference page , also called reference list, is where all sources that are cited in the text are listed. The citations differs for each source type. Aside from the references itself the reference page as a whole also has specific APA formatting guidelines.

The APA reference page example below highlights those guidelines regarding page margins, hanging indent and the reference page title “References”. Furthermore, the reference list is sorted alphabetically . You can easily create APA references with Scribbr’s free APA Citation Generator .

APA reference page format

APA format citations consist of parenthetical citation in the text ( APA 6 in-text citations ) and the full reference in the reference list. For each webpage, journal article, book or any other source specific citation guidelines apply.

To make things easier Scribbr created the free APA Citation Generator that cites every source perfectly. Just enter the URL, journal DOI or book ISBN and both the in-text citation and full reference are generated.

In addition, Scribbr has in-depth APA citation examples for every source type ranging from journal articles and books to YouTube videos and tweets .

Trump’s Third Act? American Gangster.

An illustration of a window with the blind down and a table. On the table is a fedora and a red tie.

By Samuel Earle

Mr. Earle is the author of “Tory Nation: How One Party Took Over.”

In recent months, Donald Trump has been trying out a new routine. At rallies and town halls across the country, he compares himself to Al Capone. “He was seriously tough, right?” Mr. Trump told a rally in Iowa in October , in an early rendition of the act. But “he was only indicted one time; I’ve been indicted four times.” (Capone was, in fact, indicted at least six times.) The implication is not just that Mr. Trump is being unfairly persecuted but also that he is four times as tough as Capone. “If you looked at him in the wrong way,” Mr. Trump explained, “he blew your brains out."

Mr. Trump’s eagerness to invoke Capone reflects an important shift in the image he wants to project to the world. In 2016, Mr. Trump played the reality TV star and businessman who would shake up politics, shock and entertain. In 2020, Mr. Trump was the strongman, desperately trying to hold on to power by whatever means possible. In 2024, Mr. Trump is in his third act: the American gangster, heir to Al Capone — besieged by the authorities, charged with countless egregious felonies but surviving and thriving nonetheless, with an air of macho invincibility.

The evidence of Mr. Trump’s mobster pivot is everywhere. He rants endlessly about his legal cases in his stump speeches. On Truth Social, he boasts about having a bigger team of lawyers “than any human being in the history of our Country, including even the late great gangster, Alphonse Capone!” His team has used his mug shot — taken after he was indicted on a charge of racketeering in August — on T-shirts, mugs, Christmas wrapping, bumper stickers, beer coolers and even NFTs. They’ve sold off parts of the blue suit he was wearing in that now-infamous photo for more than $4,000 a piece (it came with a dinner with Mr. Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort).

Commentators have long pointed out that Mr. Trump behaves like a mob boss: The way he demands loyalty from his followers, lashes out at rivals, bullies authorities and flaunts his impunity are all reminiscent of the wiseguys Americans know so well from movies and television. As a real-estate mogul in New York, he seems to have relished working with mobsters and learned their vernacular before bringing their methods into the White House: telling James Comey, “I expect loyalty”; imploring Volodymyr Zelensky, “Do us a favor”; and pressuring Georgia’s secretary of state, “Fellas, I need 11,000 votes.” But before, he downplayed the mobster act in public. Now he actively courts the comparison.

Mr. Trump’s audacious embrace of a criminal persona flies in the face of conventional wisdom. When Richard Nixon told the American public, “I am not a crook,” the underlying assumption was that voters would not want a crook in the White House. Mr. Trump is testing this assumption. It’s a canny piece of marketing. A violent mobster and a self-mythologizing millionaire, Capone sanitized his crimes by cultivating an aura of celebrity and bravery, grounded in distrust of the state and a narrative of unfair persecution. The public lapped it up. “Everybody sympathizes with him,” Vanity Fair noted of Capone in 1931, as the authorities closed in on him. “Al has made murder a popular amusement.” In similar fashion, Mr. Trump tries to turn his indictments into amusement, inviting his supporters to play along. “They’re not after me, they’re after you — I’m just standing in the way!” he says, a line that greets visitors to his website, as well.

Mr. Trump clearly hopes that his Al Capone act will offer at least some cover from the four indictments he faces. And there is a twisted logic to what he is doing: By adopting the guise of the gangster, he is able to recast his lawbreaking as vigilante justice — a subversive attempt to preserve order and peace — and transform himself into a folk hero. Partly thanks to this framing, it seems unlikely that a criminal conviction will topple his candidacy: not only because Mr. Trump has already taken so many other scandals in his stride but also because, as Capone shows, the convicted criminal can be as much an American icon as the cowboy and the frontiersman. In this campaign, Mr. Trump’s mug shot is his message — and the repeated references to Al Capone are there for anyone who needs it spelled out.

In an essay from 1948, “The Gangster as Tragic Hero,” the critic Robert Warshow sought to explain the unique appeal of gangster fables in American life. He saw the gangster as a quintessentially American figure, the dark shadow of the country’s sunnier self-conception. “The gangster speaks for us,” Warshow wrote, “expressing that part of the American psyche which rejects the qualities and the demands of modern life.”

It is easy to see why gangster fables appeal to so many Republican voters today. They are stories of immigrant assimilation and success, laced with anti-immigrant sentiment and rivalry. Their heroes are creatures of the big city — those nests of Republican neuroses — who tame its excesses through force but never forget God or their family along the way. In many ways, minus the murder, they are ideal conservative citizens: enterprising, loyal, distrustful of government; prone to occasional ethical lapses, but who’s perfect?

Mr. Trump knows that in America, crooks can be the good guys. When the state is seen as corrupt, the crook becomes a kind of Everyman, bravely beating the system at its own game. This is the cynical logic that the gangster and the right-wing populist share: Everyone’s as bad as anyone else, so anything goes. “A crook is a crook,” Capone once said. “But a guy who pretends he is enforcing the law and steals on his authority is a swell snake. The worst type of these punks is the big politician, who gives about half his time to covering up so that no one will know he’s a thief.”

It’s a worldview powerful enough to convince voters that even the prized institutions of liberal democracy — a free press, open elections, the rule of law — are fronts in the biggest racket of them all. This conceit has a rich pedigree in reactionary politics. “Would-be totalitarian rulers usually start their careers by boasting of their past crimes and carefully outlining their future ones,” Hannah Arendt warned.

The gangster’s brutality also taps into what Warshow and others of his generation saw as the sadism in the American mind: the pleasure the public takes in seeing the gangster’s “unlimited possibility of aggression” inflicted upon others. The gangster is nothing without this license for violence, without the simple fact that, as Warshow put it, “he hurts people.” He intimidates his rivals and crushes his enemies. His cruelty is the point. The public can then enjoy “the double satisfaction of participating vicariously in the gangster’s sadism and then seeing it turned against the gangster himself.” “He is what we want to be and what we are afraid we may become,” Warshow wrote. Reverence and repulsion are all wrapped up.

Capone’s rise, demise and exalted afterlife don’t hold happy clues for Mr. Trump’s opponents. Dethroning a mob boss is never easy. “He was the 1920s version of the Teflon man; nothing stuck to him,” Deirdre Bair wrote in a 2016 biography of Capone. After he was arrested in 1931 for tax fraud, his mob continued to prosper for another half-century, and Capone himself, who was released after six and a half years in prison for health reasons and died from a stroke and pneumonia in 1947 at age 48, achieved a type of immortality. Mr. Trump will see in his story many reasons to be cheerful. “I often say Al Capone, he was one of the greatest of all time, if you like criminals,” Mr. Trump said in December. It was an interesting framing: “if you like criminals”? Mr. Trump has a hunch, and it’s more than just projection, that many Americans do.
