Choosing your IB ToK essay title is perhaps the most important, yet most hurried, stage of the entire essay writing process. The temptation, in choosing your ToK essay title, is always to select the topic which you think you know most about. • Advice on writing your IB ToK essay

IB ToK Essay Writing

As with any piece of academic writing that will be assessed, you should write your ToK essay with the examiners' assessment objectives fully in mind. At the very least, this will mean faithfully following the essay plan that you have written; for the plan, if correctly constructed, will outline how you intend to meet each ToK essay assessment objective. Write each paragraph so that it contributes to achieving the essay's plan; and write each sentence so that it contributes to the aim of the paragraph. The overall effect should be that of a sustained, logical argument. One tip is to leave the introduction until last; for its only when you've written the essay that you'll be in a position to write a meaningful introduction. As an experienced examiner for universities and examination boards, including the International Baccalaureate, I'm very familiar with the avoidable mistakes that students make in their writing.

Reviewing and Marking your ToK Essay

Reviewing and Marking ToK Essays

Once you have written a good draft you will likely want your ToK essay reviewed and marked, before finally submitting it. The aim of reviewing your ToK essay is not to deprive you of the satisfaction of writing your own excellent essay, but to indicate where you can make further improvements. I provide three kinds of formative marking and assessment feedback on IB ToK essays:

  • detailed colour-coded, contextual comments
  • an overall summary comment
  • grades against the IB ToK assessment objectives

This feedback will indicate your essay's current standard, pinpoint its relative strengths and weaknesses, and identify areas for possible improvements. My ToK essay marking and assessment of course includes comments on content, style and argument structure; but also spelling, punctuation and grammar. As an experienced examiner for various examination boards, including the IB, I provide expert reviewing and marking of draft ToK essays.

  • IB ToK Exhibition Tutor

IB ToK Exhibition Tutor

As an experienced TOK tutor, I offer advice to help you plan and write an excellent TOK exhibition. I work with you first to plan your exhibition: selecting the IA, three objects and knowledge theme that most relate to your personal perspective. We then plan the exhibition commentary including ideas for object images. Every decision is guided by the IB TOK Exhibition Assessment Objectives, to ensure your exhibition meets the approved criteria. If you're already at an advanced stage then I can review your 950 word exhibition commentary, providing detailed contextual and summary comments and a mark out of 10 against the exhibition assessment criteria.

IB TOK Tutors Help for 2024 Exams

When students complete their middle-year program and enter into IB Diploma, they must select subjects according to their career goals. At this point, the thing that fascinates them the most is TOK, or the theory of knowledge. Subjects like Maths, Biology, Economics, and Physics are extensions to the subjects students have already studied in previous grades, while IB TOK is unique. It has no counterpart in lower classes in any curriculum, be it IB or IGCSE, or any other. Another fantastic thing about IB Theory of Knowledge (IB TOK) is that It has a syllabus different from other subjects & IB TOK Tutors have yet to offer any new knowledge. You only analyze the knowledge you have already gained. Our IB TOK Tutor takes this fact into account and trains you accordingly. IB TOK is a core subject; passing it to get your IB Diploma is mandatory. Nowadays, There are two components in IB TOK.

  • IB TOK Exhibition- It is done in IB Diploma Year One and requires 8 hours of teaching. You can learn about the exhibition in this post.
  • IB TOK Essay- It is a 1600 words essay. IB DP 2 students submit their TOK essay in Feb / March every year.

Here are some suggestions by our IB TOK Tutors regarding the IN TOK Essay.

How does our IB TOK Tutor help with the theory of knowledge Essay?

We have a team of highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated IB TOK Tutors who can guide you to craft an excellent 1600 words IB TOK essay. We offer the following help.

  • IB TOK Essay Tutoring Package, where an experienced teacher guides you so that you can develop an essay. Usually, these classes last 6-7 hrs, stretched over an extended period.
  • Analysis and moderation for your essay, where a teacher checks your work and guides you so that you can improvise it. These classes only last for 2-3 has an end when you are confident enough to finish your work yourself.
  • You can also take a one-hour class to troubleshoot your problems if you are stuck at any specific point or need help with the right TOK question, AOK, or WOK.

Suggestions by our IB Tok Tutors to write an excellent Essay

ib tok tuition

A) First, you must look at the Titles prescribed by the IB and choose one for yourself. Some titles look pretty straightforward, but crafting a 1600 words essay on them becomes challenging, so be thoughtful while selecting it. After selecting a title, you should find out.

  • The command terms
  • The knowledge question (KQ) &
  • Whether the title focuses on shared or personal knowledge

B) Theory of knowledge mainly deals with the question, “How do we know what we know.”

Also, TOK is comparative. You need to select two Areas of Knowledge (AOK) out of the total eight areas.

These areas are Arts, Ethics, History, Human Science, Mathematics, Religion, Natural Science & Indigenous knowledge systems.

You should choose two Areas of Knowledge (AOK) to do a comparative study and answer the KQ in your prescribed title. Our IB TOK Tutors can help you to use knowledge framework devices to explore AOKs.

C) Every word in the prescribed title says something. You must understand that & act accordingly.

There can be a direct question in PT, and you can provide arguments to support or oppose it.

If there are words like: “in what way” or “Up upto What extent,” then it indicates that there is a “statement in the Prescribed title,” & you are supposed to produce an argument in favor or against it.

How is IB TOK Essay Graded:

IB TOK Essay and IB TOK Presentation both are marked out of a score of 10. But in final grading, essay marks are doubled and then added to presentation marks, so IB TOK Essay consists of 67 % of total marks. Below are the overall grade boundaries for entire theory of knowledge.

Every IB TOK Examiner is supposed to grade the essay on the following criteria-

Understanding Knowledge Issues:  In your essay, connect two knowledge issues explicitly. Compare and link these issues while showing that you understand them uniquely.

Knowers Perspective:  Share your thoughts. Include at least two viewpoints and a few examples that support your ideas, and show that you know your thinking.

Analyzing Knowledge Issues:  Dig deep into the issues. Present arguments both for and against, explain essential points and show the hidden assumptions and effects of the chosen topic.

Organizing Ideas:  Structure your essay well. Make sure your facts are correct, explain essential ideas, and if you’re using other people’s opinions, give credit by mentioning your sources.

How to Structure Your IB TOK Essay

Our IB TOK Tutors recommend following four C strategies to write your IB TOK Essay. Here is the strategy:-

  • Content- Your content must help to understand the knowledge issues.
  • Clarity- You must use the standard format that IBO prescribes to organize your essay. It will make it clear & easy to understand.
  • Creativity- It must demonstrate the way you think & how you understand knowledge issues.
  • Critical Thinking- There must be a counterargument for every argument you make so that you can evaluate the quality of your claims.

We must apply this strategy and write a 1600 words essay. IBO has prescribed a standard format to represent the IB TOK Essay. Here is the standard format:-

Introduction

You must first write an introduction for your TOK essay. This is the first paragraph  of the essay. So, It must be catchy and appealing. You can explain key terms and write some interesting things about your title. The word limit for the introduction part is 100-150 words.

First & Second Areas of knowledge

There are four paragraphs in this part. Two for each AOK. You are supposed to explain both of your your AOKs in this section. This part has a limit of 600 words. First, you write, give a proper example and then explain how this example is related to your Claim in the second paragraph  of your essay. It would help if you tried to be as attractive as possible in your model and its explanation.

  • Now comes the  third paragraph of the essay. The third paragraph of your article. Start this paragraph with a counter to your Claim. Then give a proper example of your Counterclaim and explain how your model is connected to your Counterclaim.  Finally, it would help if you highlighted your judgment & connect it to the prescribed title.
  • You must add another 600 words section to your essay with two paragraphs to include your second Area of Knowledge. Repeat the process of the Claim, an example explanation in the fourth paragraph,  then Counterclaim, example, and explanation in the  fifth paragraph.

Conclusion Part of IB TOK Essay

As the name suggests, you are supposed to conclude your findings in this  Sixth paragraph . It must have 200-250 words. Also, write the insights you have got about the two AOKs. Also, discuss the importance of your TOK essay concerning PT. Also, examine if there is an alternate approach to this KQ & Would you have the same insight if you adopted that alternate approach.

The A to Z Guide for Structuring your TOK Essay for Optimal Success

ib tok essay tutor

Written By Rashi S.

I was in the graduating class of June 2021. I earned an A for my TOK essay and a B for my EE, enabling me to secure the maximum 3 points from the core. Structuring and formatting your TOK essay well goes a long way; it helps you untangle confusing concepts and makes it simpler for your teacher and the examiner to follow your essay, consequently increasing your chance to earn a higher grade. I refer to my TOK essay to help you visualize and exemplify the points I make in this blog post. Ensure that your TOK draft is the best version of it possible; your final essay can only be better if you make the recommended changes given to you in the draft.

Tips for before you start writing your TOK essay

  • Engage in discussions with your peer(s) about the prescribed title (PT) to brainstorm ideas and consider its implications.
  • Ask your TOK teacher questions for clarity and substantive questions.
  • Ensure that you are on the same page as your teacher regarding how to write the essay as he or she is the one marking it.
  • Create an extensive outline for the essay (mine was around 3 pages long) before you start writing it and if possible, ask your teacher for his or her feedback on it.
  • It is usually best to take a moderate position on the PT (e.g. ‘to a large/small/considerable/significant extent’ instead of arguing that something completely ‘is.’

  Introduction

  • Mention the PT that you are writing in the introduction of your essay. This is a tip given to my class by our TOK teacher. She stated that examiners only receive the TOK essay to mark, without the title. Thus, it is useful to make it simpler for him or her by mentioning the PT that you are focussing on instead of having them figure it out (even though the title that you are focussing on may be apparent
  • Define key terms. There are several keywords in the PT and thus it is useful to define them in your introduction as they form the premises of your arguments. For the PT I chose, for instance, these are ‘labels,’ ‘organization of knowledge,’ and ‘constrain our understanding.’
  • Provide a roadmap of your essay. This sets the reader’s expectations regarding the content of the essay and helps them better follow the flow of your argument.
  • Mention the Area of Knowledge (AoK) you use in the essay and perhaps even the real-life examples (RLEs) and/or the Ways of Knowing (WoK). Consider providing a brief rationale for why you are using those particular AoKs.
  • I would like to add this advice that was provided by my teacher here; nevertheless, I understand that it may be debatable. Do not include your thesis statement in the introduction; instead, write it in the conclusion. This is what I did in my essay. The reasoning behind this is that it demonstrates to the examiner that you do not have a preconceived argument that you are attempting to forward and are instead formulating one after having examined all the evidence. However, writing your thesis in the introduction can be useful as it is a part of providing the examiner with a roadmap for your essay.
  • I recommend asking your teacher what he or she recommends doing for the best result.

Body Paragraph #1: Claim 1 of AoK 1

  • Begin with an argumentative and clear topic sentence, explaining why the RLE from AoK 1 supports the PT.
  • Discuss the RLE, linking it to the PT.
  • Discuss the relevant WoK.
  • End the paragraph with an interim judgement, summarizing the link between your RLE and the PT.

Body Paragraph #2: Counter Claim 1 of AoK 1

  • Start with a counterclaim to the example you gave above, explaining why it might be flawed or discussing its weakness(es).
  • Introduce the RLE.
  • Discuss the relevant WoK, perhaps a different WoK compared to the ones used in Paragraph 1.
  • End the paragraph with an interim judgement, summarizing the link between your RLE and the PT. Moreover, add a broader link between your examples and the AoK.

Body Paragraph #3: Claim 2 of AoK 2

  • Same steps as for Body Paragraph 1

Body Paragraph #4: Counter Claim 2 of AoK 2

  • Repeat steps as for Body Paragraph 2

  Conclusion

  • Begin the concluding paragraph with your thesis statement if you left it for the end. If you stated your thesis in the introduction, it is still valuable to restate it in the conclusion; however, instead of simply repeating it, reword it.
  • Wrap up by briefly referring to the RLEs you used in the essay and the broader implications it holds for the AoK.

  General Essay-Writing Tips

  • Keep sentences concise.
  • Read your essay out loud and proofread it yourself.
  • Paragraphs must be of an appropriate length and not too long.
  • Ask a peer to proofread your work.
  • Be open-minded to minor changes until the end (it can make a significant difference)
  • Use present tense in your essay. E.g. “I will argue” should be replaced with “I argue.”
  • Avoid utilizing redundant terms such as “in this essay” and “etc.” that do not carry meaning (this also saves up words!).
  • Use ‘Grammarly’ (free version sufficient) to check for spelling, grammar, and language usage.
  • Use double spacing, 12-point font size, ‘Arial’ or ‘Times New Roman’ font style.

Guide to ib tok (theory of knowledge).

ib tok essay tutor

What is IB ToK?

Theory of Knowledge (ToK) is one of the core components of the IB Diploma Programme. It is mandatory for all students and the ToK requirement is central to the educational philosophy of the IB Diploma.

The ToK course provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on “how we know” what we claim to know. Students will be required to think deeply and philosophically about what knowledge actually is; where it comes from, what it is constituted of, and the role of bias in shaping our views and beliefs.

How is IB ToK assessed?

Students will complete two personal projects (a ToK “exhibition” and a 1600 word ToK essay) to help demonstrate their understanding of the course.

The exhibition portion requires students to create an “exhibition” (presentation + commentary) of three objects that illustrate how ToK manifests in the world around us.

The exhibition is marked internally and moderated externally and is worth one-third of the marks.

The essay focuses on a conceptual issue in ToK. Students will work with their teachers to choose one of the prescribed titles, which is usually connected to the question that is at the heart of ToK study: “how do we know what we know?”

The essay is marked externally and is worth two-thirds of the marks.

What is the purpose of IB ToK?

By encouraging students to think about where knowledge comes from, the ToK course helps students gain an appreciation for the interpretative nature of knowledge.

By having an understanding of the various biases that inform beliefs and judgements, students will be better equipped to be more critical of the “knowledge claims” they encounter on a daily basis.

This is a particularly useful skill to develop in our world of information overload. Information that poses as knowledge is a growing topic of concern in our society, and ToK students will benefit from having a discerning eye for truth and a willingness to investigate for themselves whether or not knowledge claims are valid.

In addition, the ToK essay task encourages an academic approach, which will help students become more familiar with a university-style essay. This will ease the transition to academia, especially for those required to write essays for their chosen university course.

What is the ToK Exhibition?

The “ToK exhibition” task was introduced in 2022 to replace the “ToK presentation”. Take care not to confuse the two, as there are many resources online referring to the now outdated “ToK presentation”. Even though you will be required to do some presenting for the ToK exhibition, the main piece of work is a written commentary on three objects of your choice that relate to the ToK syllabus.

The ToK exhibition comprises two components:

  • In-class presentation (follow the guidance from your school)
  • Written commentary (950 words total)

The title of the written commentary will be connected to the ToK syllabus, and is often phrased as a question e.g. “What counts as good justification for a claim?” You will work with your teacher on coming up with an appropriate title/question.

You will then be asked to select three specific and unique objects which relate to the title. Advice may vary between schools but generally the chosen objects are of a specific time and place and may also be personal e.g. My primary school Qur’an.

Your task is to describe the objects and write a little about their histories and/or personal significance to you. You will move on to explain why you have included these objects in your “exhibition”, and how you think the object has enabled you to explore and understand ToK concepts.

It is crucial that you are clear in your communication and provide adequate justification for the inclusion of your objects. Don’t spend too long describing the history of the object. A brief summary is fine. Save the rest of your word count to explain how the object connects to the ideas you have been studying and what it reveals to you about ToK.

The ToK essay – how to perform well

1. Choose a title that suits your academic skills and interests

You will work with your teacher to choose a prescribed title. Usually a selection of titles are published each year, and you will choose the one that suits you best. Make your choice based on both your academic skills and interests. You want to play to your strengths and you also want to be interested in your topic, otherwise the essay could become a long, hard slog for you.

2. Understand the ToK key terms

It is worth searching online for a full glossary of ToK terms, but the following are a great starting point:

- Areas of Knowledge (AoKs). You will select two of the following for your essay: History, Human Sciences, Natural Sciences, Arts, Mathematics, History

- Ways of Knowing (WoKs) - Language, Sense perception, Emotion, Reason, Imagination, Faith, Intuition and Memory. WoKs are to be woven into your essay to connect to your chosen AoKs. Referencing 1-2 WoKs in your essay typically recommended.

- Real-Life Situations (RLS) – these are the pieces of evidence you will use to connect your chosen AoKs to the ToK essay.

- Prescribed title – the title, or prompt, of your essay.

- Knowledge questions – questions about the nature of knowledge that help shed light on your prescribed title. Knowledge questions are one of the most important features of your essay. Rather than simply answering the prescribed title, you should focus on “knowledge questions” which will in turn help you gain perspective on the title.

3. Follow the recommended essay format and structure

One important thing to note about the ToK essay is that it doesn’t follow a typical essay format. While it broadly contains an Introduction, Body and Conclusion, there is a precise, “ToK” way of doing things within each section. For instance: there are specific requirements for the introduction, the main body paragraphs need to be organised in a particular manner, and the conclusion is more than just a summary of your argument.

Students have to grapple with some quite big ideas within a tight wordcount, so breaking down the essay into smaller component parts is particularly helpful.

Firstly, get clear on your “knowledge questions” that relate to your prescribed title. For the highest level essays, the mark scheme specifically calls for a “sustained focus” on knowledge questions, in order to shed light on the prescribed title. If you only answer the prescribed title without giving adequate treatment to your knowledge questions, you will lose marks.

You will need to explain what your knowledge questions are in the introduction, and you will need to refer to them throughout your essay as you investigate your chosen Areas of Knowledge.

In the body of your essay, you will be asked to make claims and counterclaims about each Area of Knowledge you are investigating, before coming to a conclusion.

I won’t go into too much detail on structure and format as advice varies slightly from school to school, but if you’re feeling stuck, here is an outline I recommend:

P1 - Introduction (briefly respond to title, define terms, and outline knowledge questions that you hope to answer)

P2 - Claim for AoK 1

P3 -Counterclaim for AoK 1

P4 - Claim for AoK 2

P5 - Counterclaim for AoK 2

P6 – Conclusion (summarise your findings, explain why your findings are significant, consider alternate perspectives and/or a way in which your findings might be explored by someone else)

Suggested writing style for the ToK essay

“if you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself” – Albert Einstein

While I don’t recommend that students dumb down their essays into child speak, I want to stress that it is absolutely vital that students are clear with their communication and that they understand what they are writing about.

I am consistently struck by students’ attempts to make their essay “impressive” with wordy, complex sentences and lengthy quotes from academic publications, without the faintest idea of what they are writing about. To score highly on this essay, clarity and cogency are critical. Focus on these qualities first.

While this is an essay that could be seen as a bridge to academic study, at the sentence level your writing should be straightforward and clear (especially in the first draft). The structure of the ToK essay is quite complex to begin with, so don’t add additional complexity where it’s not necessary. You can always refine the essay later by adding some academic touches, such as providing additional evidence and including a handful of adventurous key terms from the course.

Beware of excessive use of secondary sources in your early drafts as well – having lots of quotes can quickly become confusing and can eat into your word count. I recommend creating a separate quotes document so you can keep your essay document clean.

TOK and TOK Essay a Definitive Guide Series: Part 4

TOK and TOK Essay: a Definitive Guide Series Part 4

Welcome to our Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and TOK Essay a Definitive Guide Series! In this series of articles, you will learn everything there is to know about the IB TOK course, TOK exhibition, and writing a compelling TOK essay. So let’s get started!

In order to excel in writing a successful TOK (Theory of Knowledge) essay one needs a clear understanding of the assessment criteria. In this article, we will explore the key aspects that examiners consider when evaluating  TOK essays. Understanding these criteria will enable you to write a well-structured and insightful essay that demonstrates your critical thinking skills. So, let’s delve into the TOK essay assessment criteria and learn how to succeed in this task.

TOK Essay Assessment Criteria. TOK and TOK Essay: a definitive guide

Clear, Coherent, and Critical Exploration

The primary criterion for a TOK essay is whether the student provides a clear, coherent, and critical exploration of the essay title. It is essential to maintain focus on the central question throughout your essay. By continuously relating your arguments and analysis to the essay title, you demonstrate your ability to stay on topic and present a well-developed response.

Emphasize How We Know, Not What We Know

A crucial aspect of the TOK essay is to focus on the process of knowledge acquisition rather than merely presenting factual information. Instead of providing lengthy descriptions  of knowledge, your essay should explore how we acquire, produce, and pass on knowledge within the areas of knowledge. It is crucial to reflect on the methods, biases, limitations, and implications of knowledge within these areas.

Effective Use of Examples

While discussing the process of knowledge acquisition, it is essential to support your arguments with relevant examples. These examples can be drawn from subject lessons or real-life situations. By using examples, you can illustrate your points effectively and provide concrete evidence to support your claims. However, be cautious not to make your essay overly descriptive; instead, maintain a focus on critical analysis.

Coherence and Flow

A well-structured essay is coherent and allows the examiner to follow your line of reasoning. Introduce your ideas clearly and use appropriate connectives and paragraphs to enhance the flow of your writing. Ensure that your arguments are logically connected, allowing the examiner to understand the progression of your thoughts. This coherence and flow contribute to the overall quality of your essay.

Consider Multiple Perspectives

An excellent TOK essay incorporates and analyzes several perspectives on the given topic. It is vital to explore different angles and present a balanced view. Your essay should not offer a one-sided answer but should rather showcase your ability to consider multiple viewpoints. By engaging with various perspectives, you demonstrate your critical thinking skills and make your essay more compelling.

Implications and Significance

Consideration of the implications and significance of your claims is a crucial element of a strong TOK essay. When presenting your arguments or conclusions, analyze the broader implications they have for the quality, reliability, or nature of knowledge within the specific area of knowledge. Reflect on how your ideas connect to knowledge as a whole, exploring the larger implications of your claims.

Answer the Essay Prompt

Addressing the essay prompt directly is of utmost importance. Even if you manage to cover all the necessary elements required for an excellent essay, failure to answer the prompt itself can significantly impact your score. Ensure that you understand the essay question and frame your arguments accordingly. This clarity of purpose will enhance the coherence and relevance of your essay.

Concluding Remarks

Crafting a successful TOK essay requires adherence to the assessment criteria outlined by examiners. By providing a clear, coherent, and critical exploration of the essay title, emphasizing the process of knowledge acquisition, utilizing relevant examples, ensuring coherence and flow, considering multiple perspectives, and reflecting on implications, you can create a compelling essay that showcases your intellectual abilities.

IB Diploma Theory Of Knowledge (ToK) Online Tutors.

IB Diploma Theory of knowledge (ToK) is a vital core subject in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Additionally, it receives a letter grade like the Extended Essay. Furthermore, it combines the latter to contribute numerically (maximum 3 marks) to the awarding of the full IB Diploma. The IB Diploma ToK Assessment is definitely not  a course in philosophy.

TOK activities and discussions aim to help students discover and express their views on knowledge issues. Furthermore, the course encourages students to share ideas with others and to listen to and learn from what others think.

Ib tok essay and ib tok exhibition commentary. course description.

Theory of Knowledge is a course created by the IB organization and must not be conceived as pure epistemology. This course involves a process of exploring and sharing students’ views on  “knowledge questions” (an umbrella term for “everything that can be approached from a TOK point of view”), so “there is no end to the valid questions that may arise”, “there are many different ways to approach TOK,” “the sheer scope of the TOK course is daunting” and “teachers and students need the confidence to go too far outside their traditional comfort zones.”

Teachers are entitled to select a teaching methodology and course material that will convey the theoretical foundation of essential concepts and may provide an environment in which these concepts can be discussed and debated. The focus of the discussion should not be the differentiation between “right” and “wrong” ideas but on the quality of justification and a balanced approach to the knowledge claim in question.

The TOK course uses a combination, in no particular order (“many entry points and sequences are possible”)

Ib tok ways of knowing ..

(sense perception, reason, emotion, faith, imagination, intuition, memory, and language). How do we gain knowledge of the world, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each way in which we learn of the world and our place in it.

Until the fall of 2014, there were only four ways of knowing (sense perception, reason, emotion, and language, but the IB curriculum then changed to include four other ways of knowing: intuition, imagination, faith, and memory).

IB TOK Areas of knowledge

(mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, history, religious knowledge systems, indigenous knowledge systems, the arts, and ethics): their distinct natures and methods of gaining knowledge, the types of claim each makes and the issues to consider (e.g., “How do you know that the scientific method is a valid method of gaining knowledge?”, “What is the reason for having historical knowledge, and how is it applied in life?”).

The IB originally had six areas of knowledge: mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, history, the arts, and ethics. In the fall of 2014, the IB curriculum changed to include two more areas of knowledge: religious knowledge systems and indigenous knowledge systems.

Factors that transcend individual ways of knowing and areas of knowledge:

The ib tok assessment (ib diploma tok essay and ib diploma tok presentation).

ib tok essay tutor

  • a) Nature of knowin g : what are the differences between information, data, belief, faith, opinion, knowledge, and wisdom?
  • b) communities: what is taken for granted in a community? How can we decide which beliefs we ought to check further?
  • c) Knowers’ perspective and applications of knowledge: how do age, education, culture, and experience influence the selection of sources and formation of knowledge claims? If you know something, or how to do something, do you have a responsibility to use your knowledge? By using different types of AOK ( Areas of knowledge ) and WOK ( Ways of knowing ) you can then start to write counterclaims and claims in different types of texts.
  • d) Justifications of knowledge claim: why should claims be assessed critically? Are logic, sensory perception, revelation, faith, memory, consensus, intuition, and self-awareness equally reliable justifications? Use of coherence, correspondence, pragmatism, and consensus as criteria of truth.

IB TOK Essay ib tok exhibition commentary .

The ToK course is expected to involve 100 teaching hours over the two years of the Diploma Programme. Having followed the course, students should be competent to analyze knowledge claims and respond to knowledge issues in the context of different areas of knowledge and ways of knowing, expressing ideas accurately and honestly, using examples from their own experiences as learners and in outside life.

  • Personal knowledge is the systematic assimilation of shared knowledge acquired in different areas of knowledge through a process that vary within disciplines.
  • In addition, shared knowledge is the accumulation of bodies of knowledge in different areas of knowledge, the media and society.
  • Furthermore, the Knowledge Framework is a scheme that contains five elements: scope and application, language, methodology, historical development and links to personal knowledge. with our IB ToK Tutors, you can develop the best framework for your IB TOK Essay.

Mast IB Theory of knowledge Assessment with the best IB Tutors across the IB World.

In addition, the theory of knowledge (ToK) is assessed in two parts: an externally examined 1,200–1,600-word essay and an internally assessed presentation. Furthermore, each part is scored using assessment criteria (four criteria for the essay and four for the presentation) that describe levels of achievement (e.g., “The inquiry explores knowledge issues. Most points are justified; most arguments are coherent. Some counterclaims are considered.” describes level 5–6 in one of the essay criteria).

In addition, the total score is converted into a grade from A to E. A similar system is used for the extended essay and students can gain up to 3 points for the diploma based on the grades achieved for ToK and EE. As a matter of fact, no diploma is awarded if a candidate fails to submit either the ToK essay or ToK presentation, or receives grade E for either the extended essay or theory of knowledge.

Unpacking the 2023 November TOK Titles: A Comprehensive IB Solved Guide

The November 2023 titles for the IB Theory of Knowledge Essay have been released! Let's face it – the TOK essay can be very intimidating. With so many topics to choose from and so many ideas bouncing around, it can be hard to know where to begin. That's where we come in. In this post, we'll take a closer look at each of the titles and give you some tips for approaching them.

General Tips to Unpacking a Title

Whenever we approach a prompt, we always want to think in terms of perspectives and counter-perspectives (for those who are familiar with the old syllabus, these were previously known as claims and counterclaims). This allows us to structure the essay within the two selected AOKs, creating four paragraphs directly addressing the title and with consideration of varying perspectives on the title. While the final conclusion that we draw will likely lie somewhere in the middle, or argue that each perspective is more/less correct in different circumstances, it is often helpful to think of the two extremes first before trying to come up with a more nuanced conclusion.

So let’s get into unpacking them – here is everything you need to know about each of the November 2023 TOK Essay titles:

Title 1: Are facts alone enough to prove a claim? Discuss with reference to any two areas of knowledge.

Recommended AOKs: Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, History

For this title, the perspective and counter-perspective are straightforward – either facts alone are enough to prove a claim, or they are not.

Some ideas to think about which support the first perspective:

Facts are objective – By providing objective evidence for a claim, facts can be a highly reliable form of evidence to support claims made by knowers. This objectivity allows for the same claim to be proven across time, in different cultures and by unique knowers.

Facts allow for conclusions to be drawn through logic – By combining an array of established facts, deductive reasoning can be utilised to draw conclusions about the world and produce new knowledge. Often facts form the premises from which knowledge claims can be made, allowing a knower to prove a claim by first establishing a series of interconnected facts.

Facts can be tested – This is particularly important for science-based AOKs which rely upon falsification as an important method of producing new knowledge. Since facts can be tested, the veracity of a knower’s claim is always available to be disproven by empirical evidence.

For your counter-perspective, you have a far greater degree of freedom in your discussion. This is where you can really differentiate your essay from others, as it is your job to decide which other important elements beyond facts alone may be necessary to prove a claim. Some ideas from us:

Opinions – Whilst opinions lack the objectivity of facts, they are often important to proving knowledge claims, as these claims are often unable to be proven by facts alone. Rather inferences must be drawn to create meaning from facts. This can be illustrated through a very simple claim: Imagine for instance that we were trying to prove the claim that Germany were responsible for World War I. Whilst we could drawn upon facts, such as the fact that they issued a blank cheque to Austria-Hungary or the fact that they invaded Belgium in August 1914, ultimately we rely upon the opinions of historians in making a judgement on how important this was in the context of the war.

Personal Experience – Whilst personal experiences only provide anecdotal evidence and cannot allow us to draw broader conclusions, they may be necessary to prove a claim which involves emotion or personal beliefs.

Creativity – Creative thinking may be necessary to prove claims, particularly in the sciences, where facts alone are insufficient. For instance, scientific theories, whilst based in fact, are often dependent on analogies, comparisons and metaphor to explain abstract concepts for which there may not yet be any measurable or empirical evidence.

Title 2: If “the mathematician’s patterns, like the painter’s and the poet’s, must be beautiful” (G.H. Hardy), how might this impact the production of knowledge? Discuss with reference to mathematics and the arts.

This title is far more intricate than the others, relying heavily upon the definitions you impose upon key terms. The concept of the “mathematician’s patterns” and the term “beautiful” must be defined in the opening of the essay, as this will restrict the scope of your knowledge exploration. The way in which we would recommend splitting up this topic would be to first discuss the impact upon the production of knowledge in mathematics and then within the Arts. Some ideas for the perspectives and counter-perspectives which you may explore include:

Beauty in Mathematics – You will want to consider the importance of beauty in Mathematics. This is not referring to beauty in the traditional sense but perhaps considering other ways in which Mathematics may be considered beautiful such as in its way of transforming complex real-world problems into simple symbols which can be solved. This can impact the production of knowledge as mathematicians may choose to ignore solutions which are complex and rough – in other words, ‘mathematically ugly’.

Beauty in Art – In discussing this AOK, you may consider the debate between aestheticism and purpose within the Arts – In other words, is Art merely supposed to ‘look good’ or does it have a greater purpose, and how does this relate to the production of knowledge in and through the Arts.

Title 3: In the acquisition of knowledge, is following experts unquestioningly as dangerous as ignoring them completely? Discuss with reference to the human sciences and one other area of knowledge.

Recommended AOKs: Human Sciences and Natural Sciences/History/Math

This title presents a very contemporary issue which is the questioning of experts and trust in the knowledge produced by experts. Nonetheless, there is a clear perspective and counter-perspective presented by this title – it is either more dangerous to follow experts unquestioningly or more dangerous to ignore them completely.

Some ideas relevant to the first perspective:

Evidence over Experts – By following experts unquestioningly, rather than examining the quality of their evidence and research methods, we fall into the trap of making arguments from authority without confirming that their conclusions are actually correct.

Subjective Experiences – While experts are helpful in drawing general conclusions/findings about the world, they do not account for subjective, individual experiences. This is particularly relevant in the Human Sciences, as theories and claims of human behaviour may not apply to all people due to the uniqueness of humans.

Lack of Progress – It is only by questioning established paradigms and claims made by existing experts that we are able to progress and acquire new knowledge. If all experts are followed unquestioningly, there can be no overhaul of existing knowledge when necessary.

Some ideas relevant to the counter-perspective:

Established Research Systems – Experts are trained in effective research methodologies and have systems to maximise the reliability of the claims they make. By ignoring experts, we are instead relying upon knowledge of laypeople whose claims have not been rigorously assessed for their veracity.

Manipulation and Logical Fallacies – By ignoring the claims of experts and instead acquiring knowledge through prominent figures such as celebrities and the media, we expose ourselves to manipulation and the array of logical fallacies employed by these individuals who have their own agenda beyond the dissemination of knowledge.

Knowledge Framework – Experts develop knowledge frameworks which can guide the production of new knowledge. By ignoring experts, we are often left to deal with problems on a case-by-case basis which can lead to a lack of consistency and structure within the knowledge which is acquired.

Title 4: Is it problematic that knowledge is so often shaped by the values of those who produce it? Discuss with reference to any two areas of knowledge.

Recommended AOKs: History, Arts, Human Sciences

This title has a focus on context and values, integral elements of the knowledge framework within the new syllabus. It also has two clear perspectives to be explored – the claim that it is problematic or the claim that it is not, keeping in mind that across both perspectives, it must be specified how knowledge is shaped by individual values.

Some ideas for the first perspective:

Bias – The shaping of knowledge by one’s individual values can create bias which may impede the reliability of knowledge produced through the lens of these values.

Subjectivity – If subjective beliefs founded in one’s values are imported into the production of knowledge which should be based on facts and evidence, this can be problematic for this knowledge.

Lack of Diversity/One-Sided Knowledge – When entire banks of knowledge are produced by individuals from the same background, culture, beliefs or school of thought, this can lead to the omission of other perspectives on an issue, which can limit the knowledge which is produced.

Individual Perspective are Important – It is often important for a knower to incorporate their own personal perspective in the production of knowledge as this is ultimately the only way in which interpretations and opinions beyond mere facts can be drawn.

Knowledge about the Knower – We can often learn more about a knower, their values and the social norms of their time when evaluating knowledge claims which are shaped by individual values, providing a second layer of ‘knowledge within knowledge’.

Specific Knowledge – Whilst not broadly applicable to people or contexts with different values, knowledge produced by those with particular individual values can be more specific and applicable to knowers within the same value system. This form of ‘insider knowledge’ may be shaped by the personal experiences of an individual, which is an asset to the production of knowledge rather than a hinderance.

Title 5: Is it always the case that “the world isn’t just the way it is, it is how we understand it – and in understanding something, we bring something to it” (adapted from Life of Pi by Yann Martel)? Discuss with reference to history and the natural sciences.

This title touches upon the debate between objective and relativistic views of knowledge and the world. The phrase ‘is it always the case’ allows us to derive two perspectives to explore – it either is always the case or it is not. The first perspective requires arguments which explain why this may always be the case, whereas the second only requires you to provide some exceptions/circumstances in which this would not be the case.

Interpretation creates Meaning – It may be argued that all elements of the world must be interpreted and doing so involves the unique lens of each individual knower. In this way, what we bring to the production of knowledge is our own distinct interpretation of the world around us.

Questioning creates Meaning – We could also consider how the questions which knowers ask are unique and based upon our own individual understanding of the world. This means that something new is created each time a new knower attempts to understand the world, as the questions asked and curiosity of each individual provides a distinct approach to knowledge.

Some ideas for the counter-perspective:

Objectivity Exists – It may be argued that there are some elements of the world which are fixed, unquestionable and objective. These components of knowledge are not dependent upon the interpretation of the individual, as there should be objective standards from which everyone should draw the same conclusion.

Repeatability – Particularly in the Natural Sciences, there are some elements of knowledge which are repeatable and not reliant upon the interpretation of the individual knower. This concept of repeatability is a foundational tenet of the sciences and the production of new knowledge of the world around us.

Title 6: Faced with a vast amount of information, how do we select what is significant for the acquisition of knowledge? Discuss with reference to the natural sciences and one other area of knowledge.

Recommended AOKs: Natural Sciences and Human Sciences/History/Arts

This title questions the way in which we determine whether a piece of information is significant for knowledge. Since this is a ‘how’ question, there are many perspectives which can be explored, rather than a clear binary of perspectives. Some ideas from us:

Selection through Merit – This concept is particularly relevant to the Natural Sciences, as the theories which are ultimately deemed as significant are those which are not falsified. This merit-based approach pits scientific theories against each other to determine which are significant for the acquisition of knowledge.

Selection through Structure and Processes – By establishing set systems and procedures for filtering the vast amount of information available within an AOK, we can make selections as to which knowledge is significant.

Selection through Applicability – When judging what is significant for the acquisition of knowledge, a knower may have to consider the vast amount of information and decipher which piece of information is most applicable to their context, values or specific circumstances.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
