  • add to the diversity of the student body;
  • show an aptitude for leadership; and
  • have a record of public service

Applicants should complete the FAFSA at the earliest possible date. However, some scholarships have application deadlines so please be attentive to financial aid deadlines.

Michael E. Moritz ’61 created full, in-state tuition scholarships to help Ohio State attract and train students with outstanding academic and personal histories who are dedicated to improving the lives of their clients, their communities, and the profession of law. The scholarships are awarded to entering students only.

In addition to having their law school education paid for entirely and receiving a $2,500 supplemental stipend, these distinguished scholars are partnered with mentors who are recognized leaders in their industries. They meet with their mentors several times a year, including a special evening with other scholars and mentors in the fall.

More than 90 students have benefited from the Moritz family’s generosity since the scholarships were created in 2001. In many cases, these high-achieving students have not only enjoyed professional success without the burden of student loan debt, but they have been inspired by the Moritz story to contribute their skills and personal resources to other causes.

The Michael E. Moritz Merit Scholarships in Law are awarded to entering students only. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must take the LSAT by November 2023 and apply for admission to Ohio State by Jan. 1, 2024.

The applicant’s past academic performance, LSAT score, demonstrated capacity for leadership, contribution to the diversity of the law school community, and other factors indicating the applicant’s potential to excel in all aspects of the law school experience are considered by the selection committee.

Some students admitted to the Moritz College of Law, and identified as having the background and credentials qualifying them for consideration as potential Moritz Scholars, will be invited to complete the Michael E. Moritz Merit Scholarships in Law Application. However, all are welcome to apply.

Leadership is an integral function of membership in the legal profession. Because of their training and understanding of the operation of the government, business, and society, lawyers have a greater responsibility, and more frequent opportunity, than other citizens to assume functions of leadership in society.

Envision yourself taking on a leadership role after law school in any area of your choosing. What would it be, why would you choose it, and how will it make a difference?

How to Find The Best Law School Scholarship for You

How to find the ideal law school scholarship

Scholarships can be hard to find, and it can be hard to figure out where to begin. Doing a thorough search on Google is the best way to find financial aid and scholarships for law school.

There are various types of scholarships , including awards based on:

  • Community Service

Starting with umbrella labels for scholarships can be an effective way to find scholarships for which you would be a great candidate. Think of sports involvement, community service, and/or academic excellence when you begin your search.

You may want to consider doing relevant work experience for law schools to increase your opportunities and strengthen scholarship applications.

When searching, try to start as specific as you can. If you identify as a member of an underserved group, you can start there. For example, “legal scholarships for women in the United States” will narrow down the search results and make surveying potential scholarship options less overwhelming.

Once you have a good handle on the awards available for your specific demographic, you can do a broader search and apply to general scholarships open to all students.

Keep in mind that local and regional law firms may also offer scholarships for students. It’s not a bad idea to get in contact with law firms in your area to inquire about their opportunities for financial aid.

Don’t shy away from broadening your search to outside your area as well! Many law firms across the country will offer scholarships to students studying law at any accredited law school, even if you live outside of the State.

Tips on How to Get a Scholarship in Law Schools

Here are some tips to make the scholarship application process easier:

Apply Early

Alarm clock

Applying as early as you can will give you a higher chance of receiving a scholarship. This is especially true of scholarships with rolling deadlines. Schools only have a certain amount of money to grant students, so if you want to be sure your chances are as high as possible, apply as soon as you can.

Remember to Proofread

A paper and pen

Your scholarship applications need to be professional and error-free. Even if your essay is meaningful and poignant, you might miss out on a scholarship because of grammar or spelling mistakes. It’s a good idea to have someone look your essay over to catch any errors you may have missed.

Keep Your Grades Up

Law school is challenging, and the last thing you want is to lose your scholarship because your grades have dropped. You’ll need to make sure you’re prepared for the demands of law school , and that means creating good study habits early in your academic career.

Pay Attention to the Requirements

Another easy way to have your application dismissed is if you submit the wrong materials. It shows a lack of care and attention to detail.

Be sure to read the requirements thoroughly before you submit. Check, double-check, and triple-check that you’ve got everything right.

Reuse Scholarship Essays

Now, you shouldn’t do this for every application. But if you’re applying to several scholarships with similar requirements and prompts, it’s okay to reuse parts of your essay. This will save you time and energy so that you can apply to as many scholarships as possible.

But make sure that you still tailor your essays to the specific requirements for each scholarship. Remember to proofread and catch any details that might seem out of place for your reader!

4. Can I Get a Law School Scholarship with a 3.5 GPA?

Yes, you can! Some scholarships even have a lower minimum GPA, although you should always strive to put your best foot forward academically.

5. When Do You Apply for Scholarships?

You should start applying for scholarships six to eight months before the deadline. It’s a good idea to apply as early as possible and give yourself lots of time to complete the application.

Final Thoughts

High tuition and living costs can lead to student loans and debt that can take years to pay off. Fortunately, there are thousands of dollars available in scholarships that can help you throughout your education.

Begin with a simple Google search with umbrella terms (for example: “law scholarships for LGBT students”) to get you started. From there, you can start looking for more general scholarships aimed at any law student. Local, regional, and out-of-state law firms can be great resources for providing financial aid as well.

Law school scholarship tips from an actual application reader

Looking for law school scholarship tips that work? Law Preview gives you his best tips for scholarship applicants.

Now that the excitement of gaining admission to law school has passed and your seat deposit(s) have been submitted, reality begins to set in — you’re going to have to pony up some serious money for your law degree.

LawSchoolTransperency.com estimates that even when applying for the median school-awarded scholarships and grants, the cost of financing a legal education can easily exceed $250,000; paying “sticker price” can tack on another $100k to that number. That’s just the cost of law school and doesn’t include any other debt a student may carry.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Free Downloadable PDF: 3 Must-Reads Before Starting Law School

Check out the tips below to help you optimize your scholarship applications.

Tip #1: respond to the prompt

scholarship essay law school

If the scholarship sponsor presents you with a prompt, please answer it. Sure, you spent a ton of time perfecting your law school personal statement — but if it doesn’t respond to the prompt, don’t submit it.

Apart from looking lazy, the reader is judging the strength of your essay against other applicants who followed the directions and responded to the prompt.

Failure to answer it will quickly take you out of consideration.

Tip #2: proofread your entire submission

scholarship essay law school

If you’re taking the time to draft an original response to the prompt, then proofreading to catch typos and grammatical errors is a must. Same with making sure you are addressing the correct scholarship sponsor in your response.

While those items are obvious, what I wasn’t prepared for was how many people submitted Word Docs with “track changes” still on so I could see comments/changes from family and friends who reviewed your essay.

C’mon people!

Tip #3: have a hook, and set it in the first two sentences

scholarship essay law school

If you take a moment to review the top 10 semi-finalists for this year’s scholarship contest , you’ll notice they all have one thing in common — they grab the reader’s attention at the very beginning.

If the reader is anything like me they have two characteristics: (1) reading scholarship essays is not their only job and (2) they probably plan to spend less than 90 seconds reading your submission.

With that in mind, you need a hook that grabs the reader’s attention so they are compelled to read until the very last word.

As a general rule of thumb, for every scholarship essay you draft, ask yourself whether the amount of effort you expended was worth the dollar amount of the scholarship; essentially, “is this essay worth $X?”  If your answer is “no,” then keep plugging away.

As lame as this may sound, from my experience, following these simple tips will quickly place you among the top 5% of all scholarship applicants.

How to Write a Scholarship Essay for Law School

11:34 pm By ScholarshipEssays

Effective Tips for Writing Scholarship Essays for Law School

D eciding to go to law school is a huge decision, and one which often comes with high financial implications. Luckily, there are many scholarship opportunities for law students that can help make the process more manageable. Scholarships are available, both from individual schools as well as private funders. There are many important pieces of your scholarship application, including your previous academic transcripts, college GPA and LSAT scores. However, the essay is one of the most important aspects of receiving a scholarship for law school because it provides you with an opportunity to prove to the scholarship committee who you are as a writer, a person, a student and as a future lawyer.

Having good GPA and LSAT scores are undeniably important. However, these measures only represent a number, and many applicants come from strong academic backgrounds. This means if you want to stand out, the essay is the place to shine in terms of increasing your chances for both being accepted to law school and receiving scholarship funds.

Doing your research and understanding the ins and outs of law school scholarships is essential to increasing your chances of receiving a scholarship. Be sure to double-check deadlines, conduct due diligence on what kinds of scholarships you meet the criteria for, and research every possible avenue of funding that might be available. Most schools offer merit-based scholarships for accepted students, and often this kind of scholarship decision is determined by the school’s general law school application.

For merit-based scholarships from schools , this means that you should consider your personal statement as both your ticket to get into law school as well as a chance to receive merit scholarship funds.

Personal statements for law school should focus on what makes you unique as a person. They can focus on an important event in your life, your upbringing, your background, or anything that shows committees why you deserve to receive a scholarship while at the same time demonstrating that you are a good candidate to go to law school. Keep in mind that a personal statement is meant to be just that. It’s different from a statement of purpose because it’s not a time to tell committees what kind of law you want to practice or the kind of research you hope to conduct. Committees want to hear about you!

Another important aspect of the law school scholarship application process to understand is that some law schools have endowment funds that can provide scholarships to law students. These scholarships sometimes require a separate essay, so be sure to pay close attention to individual school’s requirements. Endowment funds sometimes take financial situations into consideration, but writing an essay that is unique, well written and distinct from your personal essay (if they are separate essays) is essential. Some schools suggest focusing on aspects of your life that you consider unique or diverse.

Private, outside scholarships are another great source of funding and once again, writing a good scholarship essay is extremely important.

Once you’ve researched which scholarships you are eligible to apply for, give every essay you write individual attention. If there is a specific prompt, make sure you answer the prompt directly , and don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. Scholarship committees will be able to tell if you are recycling the same essay and aren’t tailoring your writing to their specific scholarship or prompt. Though with these kinds of essays you should keep your audience in mind, staying authentic and true to your values and beliefs is as important as ever.

Specificity can be a key factor in writing a successful essay. Many scholarships are geared towards minority groups, veterans, or people who want to practice in a certain area of law. Additionally, there are also scholarships for future lawyers who want to teach or to work in public service. Knowing what niche you fit into and tailoring your writing to these categories is a great way to set yourself up for success.

Regardless of what kind of law school scholarship essay you are writing, your writing should reflect the fact that you are applying for funds that are tailored to a very challenging level of education. Having errors, typos and careless mistakes is not the kind of first impression you want to make to the scholarship committee. You want your writing to be mature, accurate and thoroughly edited. This will help prove your attention to detail and willingness to commit to your work.

Similarly, be sure to adhere to all essay requirements, such as word count, format and answering all parts of the prompt. Stay on top of deadlines and be sure to research whether or not applying early will increase your chance of receiving a scholarship. You don’t want to miss out on funds because you waited until the last minute or missed a deadline.

Some sources of scholarship funds provide scholarship money on a rolling basis until the funds are gone, so try to write those essays first in order to get them turned in quickly.  Have someone you trust, such as a mentor or advisor, proofread your essays. It can also be helpful to read examples of other successful law school scholarship essays, so you can get a sense of what committees are looking for.

Putting in the time and effort to craft a law school scholarship essay that truly shines can significantly ease the financial burden of law school, and making your essay the best it can be will pay off in the long term.

8 Must-Know Law School Scholarship Tips

What’s better than finally being able to pursue your dream of going to law school? The answer is pursuing your dream of going to law school and receiving a scholarship to do so! Whether you’re planning to pursue a career in public interest, have a family to support while in school, or simply have other things you’d rather spend your hard-earned money on than tuition, then knowing how to solicit and negotiate a law school scholarship offer is critical.

Note: if you haven’t yet downloaded our free guide on how to succeed in law school, do so here !

Even better, join our FREE law school prep course here !

Here’s what you need to know!

1. The early bird gets the… money.

Every school’s scholarship structure is different. However, it’s universally true that if you apply early you give yourself the best chances of admission AND a scholarship. Many schools are capped on the amount of scholarship money they can award to students. With a finite pool of funding, you want to be sure that you get your application in early in order to receive consideration for all possible funding opportunities. Set yourself up for financial success by applying early.

2. Do the math.

Sounds simple but some law school scholarship offers can be confusing (or even un/intentionally misleading). Law school scholarships often come in one of two forms. The first is a percentage (i.e. a 75% tuition scholarship). The other is an exact number (i.e., $40,000 a year). While one may sound better than the other, DO THE MATH. Figure out what the scholarship amounts to and the difference left over that you would be responsible to pay.

A $40,000 scholarship will not go as far at a costly private school in a city with a high cost of living as it would at a public state-school in the Midwest. Ultimately, you need to know not just what you’ve been given but how much you’ll be expected to pay at the end of the day.

3. Know whether your scholarship is secure for your second and third year.

A large scholarship offer is wonderful and exciting. You should feel very proud that your hard work is paying off. But is it too good to be true? Be sure to get the details on whether the scholarship is guaranteed for all three years of your program or if there are conditions to renewal. A $20,000 a year law school scholarship that is guaranteed for all three years may ultimately be a better option than a $35,000 scholarship that you may lose in your second and third year.

Be sure to do your research and find out what the scholarship offer means for your second and third year as well.

Is the scholarship for one year or guaranteed for all three years? Is there a specific GPA you must have in order to retain your scholarship? If so, what is the scholarship retention rate (the rate at which students keep their scholarships from 1L to 2L and 2L to 3L year). Is there the chance to earn your scholarship back if you lose it? These are all important questions that should play a critical role in your decision-making process.

  4. Negotiate your offers.

For better or worse, negotiating law school scholarships is a reality of today’s admissions process. Some schools openly negotiate with students and even expect it when they make you an initial offer. Other schools have a strict policy of no negotiations. Know what the policy of the schools you are considering and set your expectations accordingly.

Save offer letters and get any additional offer in writing. If you have a phone conversation with a law school representative offering you scholarships, follow-up in writing to memorialize the offer. Send other schools your competing offer letters and ask if they’ll be able to match it. It may be an uncomfortable conversation for you but you won’t get anything if you don’t simply ask.

5. Know your “number.”

If there’s a specific amount of law school scholarship support you need in order to attend a school, figure that out! Know exactly what it will take to cover the cost of attendance. This includes tuition, books, fees, room and board, transportation and personal expenses. Share this with admissions officers and explain the breakdown of where you need to be in order to be able to attend their school. They’ll know you’re serious about attending their school since you’ve done your research and can precisely demonstrate your need. Abstractly trying to receive as much funding as possible is not a compelling argument as to why extra funding should go to you instead of someone else.

6. Understand admissions timelines.

If money for an admissions office is tight and it’s “late” in the admissions season (spring into summer), it’s possible that a school can’t give any additional funding until it’s been released back into a funding pool by other students. This means that law school scholarship funding currently committed to other students may be released when those students notify the school they are no longer interested in attending. That money can then be reallocated to others.

Make your request for more scholarship money a few weeks or a month before your first seat deposits are due. When the deposit deadline passes and students who were previously awarded scholarship do not submit a deposit to otherwise secure their seat, that money may become available again.

7. Be professional.

Conduct yourself with integrity and treat the admissions officers with respect. Admissions and financial aid representatives are usually willing to work with you but their hands may be tied. Keep in mind that if you become a thorn in their side, they may be less likely to offer you additional funding even when it becomes available. If you’re difficult to work with as a law school applicant, it doesn’t bode well with how you’ll conduct yourself while in school and in the legal profession.

8. Apply for private scholarships.

Often law school scholarships fall into two categories: merit-based awards and private funding. The merit-based awards will be granted to you based on the contents of your application. Privately funded scholarships, however, are only open to admitted students. In addition,  they often require a separate application or short essay from you. Don’t ignore additional money simply because you don’t want to write additional essays as to why you are deserving of it. Too many students think it’s too much of hassle to write additional essays. Consequently, the pool of competition for private funding tends to be smaller.

At the end of the day, you are entering into a profession that conducts itself with the highest ethics and integrity. Remember this when applying to law school and negotiating scholarships. It might feel great to have received large offers from multiple institutions. However, if you have no intention of attending a particular school, don’t needlessly engage in negotiations.  Keep in mind that any scholarship given to you is money taken away from a deserving student who may really need the extra help in order to attend their dream school.

UNM School of Law 3L students pave the way for graduate scholarships while serving on the Graduate and Professional Student Association

March 27, 2024

lawschool grads 2024

Three class of 2024 School of Law students play a significant role in the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) at UNM. Justin Lauriano serves as GPSA President, Paul Havern serves as GPSA Chief of Staff, and Aaron Sharratt serves as GPSA Grants Director. Established in 1969, the GPSA is the student government for graduate and professional students at UNM. The GPSA seeks to identify, promote, and support the interests and concerns that are important to the welfare and academic development of graduate and professional students at UNM. The GPSA promotes the rights, interests, and profespausional development of graduate and professional students within the university community through advocacy, education, and financial support.

Lauriano, Havern, and Sharratt share their experiences serving on the association. Lauriano explained he ran to advocate for graduate students across UNM. “GPSA is one of three entities allowed to lobby the state legislature on behalf of UNM. This year, I led my administration to lobby for the Graduate Scholarship Act, Senate Bill 233. This bill would create a scholarship fund comparable to the Opportunity Scholarship Act which is limited to undergraduate students. Overall, being GPSA President has been a unique and fulfilling experience. I have gained valuable knowledge about the political process and the lawmaking and lobbying process. I have also gained valuable mentorship from President Stokes, Brian S. Colon, and Provost Holloway.”

Havern shared that one of his proudest moments with GPSA was working to pass the Graduate Scholarship Act, Senate Bill 233. “We worked with Senator Pope in redrafting his Graduate Scholarship Act. The bill aimed at creating a law similar to the undergraduate Opportunity Scholarship Act. In other words, New Mexico residents would receive free graduate tuition. Unfortunately, the bill was ruled “not germaine” but the experience of redrafting the bill with the Senator, the Governor’s office, and a bill drafter was particularly memorable. We were able to draft a copy that everyone was happy with but unfortunately, a 30 day session is just too short. I have great optimism for the bill in the next session. As a result of this experience, I was able to see how a bill is made, and I was introduced to many UNM SoL graduates in the process!”

Sharratt spoke on the ways their leadership brought additional funding to students. “I became interested in working with GPSA to make others aware of the graduate student support offered and to continue improving the grants program to best serve all graduate students. Getting to hear about the incredible need and the tremendous ways in which graduate students are using these funds has been so motivating and inspirational. I am incredibly proud that we were able to advocate for and see significant changes to the Grants Code section of the GPSA Bylaws this year that will benefit graduate students to an even greater degree in the coming years. The new changes increase the number of awards and maximum award amount to multiple grant programs while also eliminating some long-standing barriers that prevented many students from being able to access much needed funding. I encourage all law students to familiarize themselves with the resources available through GPSA!”

JONATHAN TURLEY

Minnesota law school drops exclusion of whites and males from diversity scholarship.

scholarship essay law school

The Jones Day Diversity Fellowship launched in December 2022 to extend full tuition for three years at the law school. The scholarship also allows the recipient to work as a summer associate at Jones Day, one of the most sought-after firms for summer employment. The firm website maintains that “We aggressively pursue hiring, retaining, and developing lawyers from historically underrepresented groups and backgrounds.”

Various conservative sites have slammed the diversity fellowship, which was the subject of a civil rights complaint by Adam Kissel.

The September 2023 complaint to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is now closed following a settlement to drop any “preference based on race or sex.”

The question is what difference the settlement will make in actual awards.

Law schools have been accused of “gaming the system” on admissions criteria for years to circumvent federal law and governing cases on the use of race or gender. Those concerns only increased after the Supreme Court categorically rejected the use of race in admissions in Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and  Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina.

Critics are still unclear on how Jones Day and Minnesota Law School will achieve its diversity goals without applying such a preference, even if the applications are not limited on the basis of race.

The university maintains that it will not impose threshold exclusions of whites and males but will select applicants “based on their commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion” and “whose life experiences bring unique, extraordinary, or other fresh perspective to campus, including first generation college graduate and students from socioeconomically challenged backgrounds.'”

This is a recurring complaint for Minnesota. It came under fire last May when the Office of Undergraduate Students created a paid internship program application to only non-White applicants.

The question going forward is whether there is a viable basis to challenge the program on an “as applied” theory. If white males continue to be excluded, the challengers could return to allege that nothing changed beyond the language.
