Have you noticed that everything alive needs water? Your pets, trees, and your family, too. So why do you think that is? It’s true that our bodies and other living things are made from all sorts of different things but water makes up a lot of it. Also, when you look at a globe of Earth, there really is a lot of water! Scientists have found that all living things need water. So, if we would like to try to find living things from some other planet, then maybe we should look for places that also have water.

Boundaries: Students in this grade band describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. Examples of patterns could include that animals need to take in food but plants do not; the different kinds of food needed by different types of animals; the requirement of plants to have light; and that all living things need water. K-8 Water in the Biosphere. In this one-hour lesson, students make their own qualitative observations outdoors. Then they examine the life they saw and how water in the biosphere is part of the greater water cycle on Earth. Grades 3-5 or Adult Emerging Learner

All living things on Earth need water. Everything from people, plants, animals, and even mushrooms and things too small to see need water to survive. Even things like cacti in a desert need some water to live. Water seems to be very important for life. Have you ever looked at a globe – there is a lot of water! Since all living things that we know of need water and many of us want to know if there could be other living things out there beyond Earth, then one thing we can do is investigate places with water beyond Earth. Mars had rivers and lakes of water a long time ago and there could still be some water deep underground there today. Also, there are some moons around other planets that have lots of water. We need to continue to investigate these places and more because if there is water, then there might be life, too.

ESS2.A: Earth Materials and Systems: Rainfall helps to shape the land and affects the types of living things found in a region. Water, ice, wind, living organisms, and gravity break rocks, soils, and sediments into smaller particles and move them around. (4-ESS2-1) *Earth’s major systems are the geosphere (solid and molten rock, soil, and sediments), the hydrosphere (water and ice), the atmosphere (air), and the biosphere (living things, including humans). These systems interact in multiple ways to affect Earth’s surface materials and processes. The ocean supports a variety of ecosystems and organisms, shapes landforms, and influences climate. ESS2.B: Plate Tectonics and Large-Scale System Interactions: The locations of mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches, ocean floor structures, earthquakes, and volcanoes occur in patterns. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur in bands that are often along the boundaries between continents and oceans. Major mountain chains form inside continents or near their edges. Maps can help locate the different land and water features areas of Earth. (4-ESS2-2)

Big Ideas: All living things on Earth need water. Since water is vital for life on Earth, places beyond Earth that have water are of great interest. In the past, Mars had an abundance of water and it still has water today as do some of the moons around other planets in our solar system. These may be the best places to find life outside of Earth.

Boundaries: Students in this grade band are learning to graphically represent the distribution of water on Earth, including its oceans, lakes, glaciers, ground water, and polar ice caps. (5-ESS2-2)

In the lesson (60 minutes) “Planet Designer: Kelvin Climb” students create a planet using a computer game and change features of the planet to increase or decrease the planet’s temperature. Students explore some of the same principles scientists use to determine how likely it is for a planet to maintain flowing water, a critical ingredient for life as we know it. Grades 6-8 or Adult Building Learner

One attribute that is common to all living things that we know of is the need for water to survive. Even organisms that live in very dry places need water to live. Why? Why is water so important to living things? One reason that water is so important is because it’s a liquid. This means that it can move around the materials that are needed for chemical reactions. These reactions include the ability for cells to get energy in and to move waste out.

Water is made up of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen that make a molecule. But water is a certain type of molecule called a “polar molecule”. Polar molecules have one side of the molecule that’s a bit more positively charged and the other side a little more negatively charged. This allows water to more easily break apart or dissolve other molecules. That’s why you can dissolve salt in water! There are actually a lot of other liquids that can do this but water has other advantages as well. Water is very plentiful. About 70% of the surface of Earth is covered by water, from our oceans and our lakes to our rivers and streams. It turns out that water is also plentiful in the solar system. Comets have a lot of water within them, there is ample evidence that liquid water existed on ancient Mars in great quantities, and many moons have water under their surfaces.

Water is super important for life as we know it! There might be other forms of life out there that don’t rely on water the way we do, but looking for alien life in places with lots of water is one good way to start searching for possible extraterrestrial life.

Boundaries: Students in this grade band construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how the uneven distributions of Earth’s mineral, energy, and groundwater resources are the result of past and current geoscience processes. 8-10 SpaceMath Problem 121: Ice on Mercury? Since the 1990’s, radio astronomers have mapped Mercury. An outstanding curiosity is that in the polar regions, some craters appear to have ‘anomalous reflectivity’ in the shadowed areas of these craters. One interpretation is that this is caused by subsurface ice. The MESSENGER spacecraft hopes to explore this issue in the next few years. In this activity, students measure the surface areas of these potential ice deposits and calculate the volume of water that they imply. Grades 9-12 or Adult Sophisticated Learner

All life on this planet needs water to survive. Some life can live with very little water in extremely dry places but they still need water. As we strive to find life beyond Earth, it is important to consider what life on Earth tells us about where to look. Why is water so important for life? Water supports cell functions. All organisms are made of cells, from microbes to the largest animals. All of life’s functions are completed within cells. Life needs chemical reactions to take place in order to gain energy, grow, and get rid of waste. Water is a liquid which allows the chemistry of life to take place. It is also a polar molecule which allows most other molecules to be dissolved. Because of this, we call water a “solvent”. Having such a good solvent as water is critical for the functions of life. But there are also some other reasons why water is so important:

Water is plentiful! Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe and oxygen the most plentiful in Earth’s crust. On Earth, about 70% of the surface is covered by water. But there’s also lots of water in other places in our solar system. For instance, we’ve found many lines of evidence that lots of water existed on the surface of Mars during its early times, and Mars currently has a lot of frozen water under its surface. Comets contain mostly water ice. There are lots of moons in our solar system that are made of a lot of water ice, and there are even some moons with liquid water oceans under their icy crusts (like Europa and Enceladus).

Water still has other advantages as a solvent for life. For instance, water stays in the liquid phase over a large range of temperatures compared to some other solvents. That allows more places to have the potential for liquid water. It also has a high heat capacity. This means that water offers some protection to organisms from quick or drastic temperature changes.

Water also has an interesting property with regard to the density of ice. For many molecules, the solid has a higher density than the liquid. So, for most molecules, the solid would sink in the liquid. But this isn’t the case with water. For water, ice is actually less dense than liquid water. This is why ice floats! If this didn’t happen, then all of the organisms that live in the bottoms of lakes in the winter time would be completely frozen. But, even worse, during times in our planet’s history when the world has become very cold (causing what we call Snowball Earth), if frozen water sank, then all of Earth’s ocean life would have become frozen and maybe died!

If we want to understand how life works, then it’s really important to understand the chemistry of water. And astrobiologists who are wondering if we’re alone in the universe need to be aware of the potential for water to be important for other kinds of life as well. Right now, we’re investigating worlds like Enceladus and Europa, Mars, and other solar system bodies that show signs of water. Also, beyond our solar system, we’re looking for exoplanets that have the potential for liquid water at their surfaces, since they might be important places for us to look for possible extraterrestrial life.

These interactions vary with latitude, altitude, and local and regional geography, all of which can affect oceanic and atmospheric flow patterns. (MS-ESS2-6) The ocean exerts a major influence on weather and climate by absorbing energy from the Sun, releasing it over time, and globally redistributing it through ocean currents. (MS-ESS2-6)

Stability and Change: Much of science deals with constructing explanations of how things change and how they remain stable. (HS-ESS2-7)

Storyline Extensions

Water is so cool.

The range of temperatures at which water stays liquid is rather large compared to most other common solvents. For instance, at sea level methane freezes at -182 Celsius © and boils at -162 C (a range of 21 C) and ammonia freezes at -78 C and boils at -34 C (a range of 44 C), meanwhile water freezes at 0 C and boils at 100 C (a range of 100 C). This means that the range of temperatures where water is liquid is more than twice that of ammonia and almost five times more than that of methane.

Water has a high surface tension. This means that that the molecules at the surface of a body of water are attracted to each other and hold each other together. You can see this yourself by filling a glass with water to the very tippy top and then seeing how many more drops of water you can get into it. You’ll be surprised to find that you can actually get a good bit more water into the glass! The high surface tension of water is also why some insects, like water striders, are able to move around on top of water without sinking into it. It also is related to something called “capillary action”, which is used by many plants to draw water up from the ground against gravity.

It’s actually really rare for a solvent to be more dense as a liquid than as a solid. We know of other elements and molecules that are more dense as liquids, but it’s far more common for the solid form of a substance to be more dense.

[note: this is fairly advanced] Oxygen is a member of the group of elements known as the “oxygen family” (also sometimes called the chalcogens). These are the elements in the periodic table that are in group 16 (the vertical column starting with oxygen and going down). They include oxygen (O), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), and polonium (Po). All of these elements can form bonds with two hydrogen atoms. However, none of the other chalcogens come close to oxygen in its large range of temperatures where it is a liquid. This is because oxygen is much more electronegative (much greedier for electrons) and makes a far more polar molecule than the others. This greater polarity leads to stronger hydrogen bonding and the greater range of temperatures for liquid water.

Why Conserve Water?

In addition to saving money on your utility bill, water conservation helps prevent water pollution in nearby lakes, rivers, and local watersheds. Conserving water also prevents greenhouse gas emissions associated with treating and distributing water.

Water Conservation in the Home ...

The most effective way to save water is to upgrade to efficient fixtures. But there are other ways to help reduce the amount of water you use at home.

Don’t Use the Toilet as an Ashtray or Wastebasket Every time you flush a cigarette butt, facial tissue, or other small bit of trash, you’re wasting gallons of water. Put them in the garbage, or better yet, recycle.

Put Plastic Bottles or a Float Booster in Your Toilet Tank To cut down on water waste, put an inch or two of sand or pebbles inside each of two plastic bottles. Fill the bottles with water, screw the lids on, and put them in your toilet tank, safely away from the operating mechanisms. Or, buy an inexpensive tank bank or float booster. This may save ten or more gallons of water per day. Be sure at least three gallons of water remain in the tank so it will flush properly. If there is not enough water to get a proper flush, users will hold the lever down too long or do multiple flushes to get rid of waste. Two flushes at 1.4 gallons are worse than a single 2 gallon flush.

Buy an Adjustable Toilet Flapper Installing an adjustable toilet flapper will allow for adjustment of each per flush use; the user can adjust the flush rate to the minimum per flush setting that achieves a single good flush each time.

Install Low or Dual Flush Models Federal regulations state that new toilets must use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush. Replacing an old toilet with an ultra-low volume (ULV) 1.6 gallon flush model represents a 70% savings in water and will cut indoor water use by about 30%. Alternatively, consider purchasing a dual flush toilet or installing dual flush converter that turns a standard toilet into a dual flush toilet, saving an average family 15,000 gallons of water each year. More water can be used when it’s needed, but for most flushes you’ll be using 70% less, adding up to some significant water savings.

Install Composting Toilets Composting toilets are the most effective way to cut water waste from your bathroom since they require no water at all! Better still, they keep all the nutrients and pollutants out of waterways and make them available for use in non-food landscapes. Check codes in your area to be sure they’re legal before installing one. Read our article about composting toilets to find out if they’re right for you.

Use Clothes Washer for Only Full Loads With clothes washers, avoid the permanent press cycle, which uses an added 5 gallons (20 liters) for the extra rinse. For partial loads, adjust water levels to match the size of the load.

Consider a High Efficiency Washing Machine The most efficient washing machines use as little as seven gallons per load, compared to a whopping 54 for a traditional washer. A high efficiency (HE) washer should easily pay for itself over its lifetime in water and energy savings. New Energy Star rated washers use 35 – 50% less water and 50% less energy per load. Install Water-Saving Showerheads, Shower Timers, and Low-Flow Faucet Aerators Inexpensive water-saving low-flow showerheads or restrictors are easy for the homeowner to install. Long showers can use five to ten gallons every unneeded minute. “Low-flow” means it uses less than 2.5 gallons per minute. You can easily install a ShowerStart , which automatically pauses a running shower once it gets warm.

Take Shorter Showers One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the shower after soaping up, then turn it back on to rinse. A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water. You can also install a simple shower timer, available from your local water utility or hardware store.

By using water-saving features you can reduce your in-home water use by 35%. This means the average household, which uses 130,000 gallons per year, could save 44,00 gallons of water per year.

For example, 75% of water used indoors is in the bathroom, and 25% of this is for the toilet. The average toilet uses 4 gallons per flush (gpf). You can invest in a ULF (ultra-low flush) toilet which will use only 2 gpf. But you can also install a simple tank bank, costing about $2, which will save .8 gpf. This saves 40% of what you would save with the ULF toilet. Using simple methods like tank banks, low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators you can retrofit your home for under$50.

By using water-saving features you can reduce your in-home water use by 35%. This means the average household, which uses 130,000 gallons per year, could save 44,00 gallons of water per year. On a daily basis, the average household, using 350 gallons per day, could save 125 gallons of water per day. The average individual, currently using 70 gallons per day, could save 25 gallons of water per day.

When buying low-flow aerators, be sure to read the label for the actual ‘gpm’ (gallons per minute) rating. Often, the big box retailers promote “low-flow” which are rated at 2.5 gpm, which is at the top of the low-flow spectrum. This may be needed for the kitchen sink, but we find that a 1.5 gpm aerator works fine for the bathroom sink and most water outlets, delivering the same spray force in a comfortable, soft stream.   • Snack on water-rich fruits and vegetables , including watermelon, cantaloupe, lettuce, and celery, throughout the day
  • Keep track of your water intake by using a water tracker app
  • Drink water with all meals

Saving Water and Methods of Its Protection Research Paper

Every form of life depends on water for existence. Water is also critical for most industrial processes. However, misuse and pollution of water are making it a very scarce commodity although most of the world population does not realize this. This paper describes water scarcity, factors behind the scarcity and the possible methods of protecting and conserving it.

At an industrial level, a good water management plan (WMP) is mandatory. Apart from saving water, the good WMP benefits the industry in various other ways. These are described in the paper. It also considers various methods of saving water at home and the possibility of forced water conservation in cases where consumers are ignorant.

What is water? How and why do we need to conserve it? These are very important questions when considering sustainability of life in the future. Most people especially in the developed world do not realize that sustainability of life in the future is at stake if measures to conserve water are not implemented.

This is because through out their lives, these people have had readily available fresh water (Cheng, 2010). Their taps and showers never run out of water, the water closets always flush and even when they need ice, the refrigerator has more than enough. The only people who realize that water is scarce are those from arid and semiarid regions where getting a cup of clean drinking water counts as one of their greatest challenge.

In the developing countries of Africa and the Middle East, women from some places walk for six kilometers a day just to fetch water. Even in their cities, water crisis is not a new thing. This has not been felt in the developed countries because of the well-established infrastructure, which is absent in the developing countries. Due to this, the issue of water scarcity is assumed to only affect the developing countries.

However, this is not the case and Live Earth CEO has warned that in 20-25 years time, there will be a disaster in developed countries (Mueller, 2010). There is therefore a dire need to protect and conserve water in our daily domestic and industrial activities.

Water is a unique compound. It exists naturally in three physical states namely: solid, liquid and gas unlike many other compounds.It is vital for sustenance of life; it transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, normalizes body temperature, regulates Earth’s temperature, removes wastes, protects tissue, and many other functions (“importance of water,” n.d.).

Without water, standard animals would only survive for a few days.At an industrial level, all manufacturing and processing companies require water somewhere along their production lines.Water is therefore important not only for existence of life, but also for economic activities.It needs to be protected and conserved.

In order to show effectively the importance of conserving water, it is imperative to show the logical reasons for doing so. Since it is a known fact that 80% of the earth’s surface is covered by water, someone may ask how then water can be scarce. To answer this question, water is scarce because only less than 1% of this surface water is fresh water (“The water cycle,” n.d.).

Almost all of our daily needs such as drinking, cooking, irrigation, manufacturing and many others require this fresh water. Apart from the surface water, there is the ground water. This water is also available for use but over the years, the water table has been decreasing day by day. Boreholes dry up and deeper ones need to be drilled.

Another problem with availability of water is water pollution. Although Earth’s processes recycle water, its pollution makes it unavailable for future use. Factory discharges, pesticides and herbicides, sewage waste, detergents and all other chemicals that we use on the surface affects the natural water sources. Pollution is therefore acting as one of the major reasons of scarcity in portable water. Measures to protect and conserve water can be applied at domestic and industrial level.

Industries should also strive to conserve water. To do this, they need a water management plan (WMP) which is effective. For the water management plan to be effective, it must incorporate both systems and technical approaches (Mohan, 2007). This is because incorporating both systems and technical approaches ensures that water management is sustainable.

That is, the plan will effectively manage the water usage at the current state of the company as well as in the future. The change in management priorities or departure of a champion for the plan does not jeopardize the WMP. Therefore, an effective WMP ensures continued improvement in water conservation. All companies that are planning to conserve water must have an effective WMP.

Traditional water management systems only incorporated the technical approach and sustainability was a problem. Mohan (2007) describes the characteristics of a good WMP to be leadership, accountability, efficient water usage, minimized pollution, addressing behavioral changes in water usage, driving development of data collection and reporting of water usage, specifying the benefits and costs of the system to the company and driving changes in how the company interacts with suppliers.

By ensuring that the water management plan of the company meets these characteristics, sustainable water management by the company is achieved. The company also achieves other benefits. It saves costs, aligns water conservation with corporate strategy, good public relation and citation for obtaining subsidies among others. The plan also has the overall effect of minimizing water shortage.

At home, every individual can contribute at protecting and conserving water. If everybody is made aware of the importance of conserving water, the world’s population may safeguard its future and that of the future generations.

One of the areas in which people can save water is through minimizing the quantity of water spent every day. People use water without caring if there will be more tomorrow. They just know that if there is no water, they will complain to the city council and the problem will be solved. This is especially the case if the families can afford the clear the water bills.

People misuse the water because they can pay for it. They spend too much time in the shower, leave the taps running unnecessarily and excessively water their lawns. These are just a few examples of some of the ways people use excessive water in circumstances that would require less water. By making people aware of the effect their activities have on water availability, some wasted water will be conserved.

Apart from conserving water, individuals may also protect water sources from pollution. Use of environmental friendly detergents and other household chemicals will have a positive impact on minimizing the level of water pollution. By minimizing water pollution, the costs involved in treatment and purification of water will be used to implement other infrastructure in water management.

Leaving the option of conserving water to individual citizens may not be very effective since some of them may not care much. The authorities involved in provision of water should put in place measures that force the consumers to conserve water. In Los Angeles, the city’s department of water and power has implemented several restrictive measures to cub water wastage.

Lawn sprinklers in the region are not permitted between 9.00am and 4.00pm (Welch, 2009). This ensures minimum water loss through evaporation. In addition to this, the sprinklers are only permitted twice a week a week (Welch, 2009). The result of these restrictions is that water consumption by single-family homes decreased by over 23 percent.

To be able to observe these restrictions, Los Angeles residents had to change the type of vegetation they planted on their compounds. They replaced grass that requires a lot of water with low water native plants like rosemary and synthetic grass. These measures by the city council were effective in controlling wastage of water.

It is worth noting that the city council determined the most water wasting activities performed by residents of Los Angeles and restricted them. This can also be done in other cities. If residents of Los Angeles, which receives very little rainfall in a year, can save water, residents of other places can save water too

Ensuring water conservation is a challenging task. It has many challenges especially since it mainly depends on people’s perception and willingness to change. To change people’s perception and habits, intensive awareness campaigns are needed and this requires a lot of investment.

With few bodies ready to support such campaigns, it is still not possible to reach every individual and change their water usage habits. At the industrial level, investment is also needed to implement WMPs. Most corporate organizations are not willing to make the step especially those focused on only maximizing their profits. These limitations therefore call for forced water conservation by authorities, which is not sometimes possible due to lack of such laws in many places.

Water is vital for existence of life. It is also important for economic activities carried out by man. The amount of water available on Earth is not enough to meet all its requirements. Further more, with the current excessive waste of fresh water and pollution, the life of future generations is at stake. If protection and conservation of water is not done, there will be a disaster in the coming few decades. The conservation measures are needed at both domestic and industrial levels.

At the domestic level, awareness is needed since most people in developed countries do not realize the importance of conserving water. Forced water conservation is even needed in some cases. At an industrial level, all companies should develop and implement an effective water management plan (WMP) that ensures sustainable water management. A good WMP has far-reaching benefits for the company as well as the society. (1640 words).
