If you’re at a point in your life where you’re considering continuing your education, you may wonder if online learning is the right path for you.

Taking an online course requires a notable investment of time, effort, and money, so it’s important to feel confident about your decision before moving forward. While online learning works incredibly well for some people, it’s not for everyone.

We recently sat down with MIT xPRO Senior Instructional Designer and Program Manager Luke Hobson to explore the pros and cons of online learning and what to look for in an online course. If you’re waiting for a sign about whether or not to enroll in that course you’ve been eying, you just might find it here.

Pros of Online Learning

First, let’s take a look at the true value of online learning by examining some of the benefits:

1. Flexibility

Online learning’s most significant advantage is its flexibility. It’s the reason millions of adults have chosen to continue their education and pursue certificates and degrees.

Asynchronous courses allow learners to complete work at their own pace, empowering them to find the optimal time to consume the content and submit assignments.

Some people are more attentive, focused, and creative in the mornings compared to the evenings and vice versa. Whatever works best for the learners should be the priority of the learning experience.

2. Community

When Luke asks people about their main reason for enrolling in a course, a common answer is networking and community.

Learners crave finding like-minded individuals who are going through the same experiences and have the same questions. They want to find a place where they belong. Being in the company of others who understand what they’re going through can help online learners who are looking for support and motivation during challenging times and times that are worth celebrating.

Some learners have created study groups and book clubs that have carried on far beyond the end of the course-it’s amazing what can grow from a single post on a discussion board!

3. Latest information

“Speed is a massive benefit of online learning,” and according to Luke, it often doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

“When we say speed, we don’t mean being quick with learning. We mean actual speed to market. There are so many new ideas evolving within technical spaces that it’s impossible to keep courses the way they were originally designed for a long period of time.”

Luke notes that a program on Additive Manufacturing , Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality , or Nanotechnology must be checked and updated frequently. More formal learning modalities have difficulty changing content at this rapid pace. But within the online space, it’s expected that the course content will change as quickly as the world itself does.

Cons of Online Learning

Now that we’ve looked at some of the biggest pros of online learning, let’s examine a few of the drawbacks:

1. Learning environment

While many learners thrive in an asynchronous learning environment, others struggle. Some learners prefer live lessons and an instructor they can connect with multiple times a week. They need these interactions to feel supported and to persist.

Most learners within the online space identify themselves as self-directed learners, meaning they can learn on their own with the right environment, guidance, materials, and assignments. Learners should know themselves first and understand their preferences when it comes to what kind of environment will help them thrive.

2. Repetition

One drawback of online courses is that the structure can be repetitive: do a reading, respond to two discussion posts, submit an essay, repeat. After a while, some learners may feel disengaged from the learning experience.

There are online courses that break the mold and offer multiple kinds of learning activities, assessments, and content to make the learning experience come alive, but it may take some research to find them-more on what to look for in an online course later in this article! Luke and his colleagues at MIT xPRO are mindful of designing courses that genuinely engage learners from beginning to end.

3. Underestimation

Luke has noticed that some learners underestimate how much work is required in an online course. They may mistakenly believe that online learning is somehow “easier” compared to in-person learning.

For those learners who miscalculate how long they will need to spend online or how challenging the assignments can be, changing that mindset is a difficult process. It’s essential to set aside the right amount of time per week to contribute to the content, activities, and assignments. Creating personal deadlines and building a study routine are two best practices that successful online learners follow to hold themselves accountable.

You’ve probably gathered by now that not all online courses are created equal. On one end of the spectrum, there are methods of online learning that leave learners stunned by what a great experience they had. On the other end of the spectrum, some online learning courses are so disappointing that learners regret their decision to enroll.

If you want to experience the value of online learning, it’s essential to pick the right course. Here’s a quick list of what to look for:

  • Feedback and connection to peers within the course platform. Interacting regularly with other learners makes a big difference. Luke and the MIT xPRO team use peer-reviewed feedback to give learners the opportunity to engage with each other’s work.
  • Proof of hard work. In the online learning space, proof of hard work often comes in the form of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or specific certifications. Are we failing our children with online learning?  Online schooling is when students work their assigned schedule doing their school work.  Students are failing themselves with doing online learning because of how students learn.  In all, in-person learning is more beneficial than online learning.

Why is online learning failing our students?  Online learning is causing students to self isolate themselves.  Self-isolation can ruin students' learning by making them feel depressed and they may feel like they have less motivation.  Some students who are not responsible, or willing to do their work on a normal basis, feel as if they have their own schedule to complete whenever they want.  Self-isolation can make students feel as if they are alone, making them hide or keep away from reality.  Some students just do the work to get a grade with no effort.  Online classes have a 10% to 20% chance of students failing than students in in-person learning.  In total 40% to 80% of students have dropped out of online schooling due to bad grades and online schooling not being helpful. Another thing about online learning is that the students have no one to guide them. Students have no one to raise their hand to for questions or if they are confused to get help with the answer they're looking for.  Without being able to raise their hand and leave some of their ideas and thoughts they begin to not build up new connections and with little interaction with other students, it can make them very self-observant.

Online learning leaves students with too much freedom and flexibility, causing students to go above and beyond on their assignments.  It can also leave students dumbfounded.  Students have no one to remind them of missing or late assignments making students procrastinate.  Procrastination can cause students to rush their thoughts and overthink and be stressed when doing work.  Procrastination can make students go by their own schedule making them think as if they can do whatever they want whenever they want. According to Ohio State News, more than 70% of the time students procrastinate in online schooling.  Students go by their own schedule.  When at home students have so many distractions around them like electronic devices, animals, family, and even loud noises.  With students getting distracted it could make the student stop what they are doing and continue to do what made them get distracted.  When students get behind on online schooling, they miss out on their full education.  Yes, it might give them more time and help them, but it can make them lose motivation for everything.

Social skills with online education aren't that helpful.  Online learning ruins students’ social skills leaving students very quiet and withdrawn.  In-person learning helps students with in-school students have the chance to improve their social skills.  In-school can make students better at communication and their learning skills and can help you with jobs.  By doing better with social skills you are learning to be more independent and mature.  You learn new things and it can make you know more or be more prepared for jobs.  If you wanted to be a teacher and you were in an online school, you wouldn't have any social skills or might not like communicating, causing them to not talk much.

In conclusion, students doing online schooling are most likely at risk of failing or falling behind than people who are in-person learning.  In my opinion, I believe that online learning is not as beneficial and can lead to risks of behavior, social skills, and even failure in one's own education.  Online schooling could lead the students to feel ways. What will you do next time you see someone struggling with online schooling? Online schooling is not beneficial and schools should not recommend students to do it for their own education.

Institutionalized education has been affected significantly by the current Covid-19 pandemic because schools have been closed as one of the countermeasures to address this global problem. As such, online learning has become the preferred mode of delivering instruction to students. With the rapid rate of technological growth in the last 20 years, people are now enjoying one of the most significant technological booms in human history. In the field of education, online learning is becoming more dominant and heavily debated as it expands out of the traditional classroom towards anyone with access to the Internet. As an educator, I have a particular interest in this topic because it affects the way I deliver content and interact with my students. This paper identifies the advantages and disadvantages of online learning and how technology is vital to help me make informed decisions in the future.

In their study, Kaplan and Haenlein argue that parents are sharply divided on the introduction of online classes (445). A good number of parents are in support, while others say that machines cannot replace the human element. George, a professional in the banking sector and a parent of a preschooler says that online classes are a new concept, and his son was excited initially to be part of it (Kaplan and Haenlein 447). Zoom is one of the popular online platforms being used to teach learners, and it has been highly helpful in facilitating distance learning. However, it has a major drawback, as it does not provide a way for students to submit their work for assessment. As such, the only option for learners is to photograph their work and email it, and this process could be complicated for some students, especially those in elementary classes. Therefore, parents have to be involved to help their children, which could be a barrier to online learning, specifically in cases where such adults are not available.

I agree with these two parents in the sense that they are highlighting real issues. For instance, George is expressing the excitement his son has courtesy of virtual learning. He believes that this being a generation of electronic gadgets, his son will benefit a lot. However, he pushes for modification of this online platform. On the other hand, Ruth is very definite. She calls online classes total rubbish because, according to her, her child is not benefiting a lot from technology. The teachers often send unclear photos of notes through a WhatsApp group, and parents are expected to write them down for their children to read. This article leaves me with one question – in today’s time, many families have both parents working, and thus they might find it challenging to do the tasks given by the school as a parent – is it not prudent for the school to devise an initiative to connect with the child directly?

In another article, Dias et al. argue that media platforms used in online learning avail minimal interactive environment for students (417). Learning institutions use tools such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Microsoft Teams, among other related platforms. However, some learners still struggle to get online. Ms. Diana, a chemistry teacher from a city school, feels that virtual classes are not easy to handle because a lot goes into making them productive and interactive (Dias et al. 417). During online courses, teachers try to create an interactive environment by randomly asking questions to students, which is lacking in online learning.

I partly disagree with this article’s argument that teaching via online platforms is a struggle. I believe it is not difficult, but it is different in the sense that the physical presence of students in the class is missing. For example, from my experience, Zoom offers an interactive platform that allows users to plan and manage lessons effectively. In addition, it creates learning experiences almost similar to the traditional classroom set-up, including the ability for students to raise their hands, pose questions, and participate in discussions. I believe that this new experience excites students, thus facilitating learning in the process. One question that arises for me from this article– is it not ideal to appreciate the fact that there are minimal distractions by the learner’s classmates, which is common in a regular classroom?

In another article, Dumford and Miller argue that the significant relationships for engagement and amount of online course exposure reveal that the online environment might encourage certain types of engagement, such as more use of quantitative reasoning activities (454). Traditional face-to-face settings seem more likely to promote collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, effective teaching practices, quality of communications, and discussions with others. According to the authors of this article, with online learning gaining popularity in modern times, it is important to investigate the advantages associated with it for continued improvement to meet learning objectives. The article notes that proper research should be done on the involvement of students who access their learning content through an online medium at varying levels, exploring patterns of engagement for online learners and those in face-to-face settings through the percentage of classes in which a student is enrolled online.

I agree that it is worth noting that the education system still expects children to write exams in most countries. However, with online learning, it becomes hard for teachers to monitor how such exams take place. Additionally, while learners might have good typing skills, maintaining good handwriting in a normal class set-up might be a major problem. Moreover, many students have not been able to take advantage of virtual platforms because they do not have suitable devices at home, or they lack a good Internet connection. However, despite the many highlighted drawbacks, online learning serves the purpose of engaging with students, especially during this time whereby schools have been closed following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. This article raises an important question – what will happen to learners who come from poor and marginalized communities where access to the Internet is a challenge?

As the technology used in online education continues to evolve rapidly, research must address the impact of online learning on virtual platforms. More research is also needed on whether there are disciplinary modifications that can be made on the online platforms to make the online curriculum more interactive. If the primary goal of online learning is to reach a broader range of students and provide educational opportunities for those who might not otherwise have such access, then it is essential to ensure that online education students are partaking in equally engaging educational experiences that contribute to their learning and success.

Also, no longer are we taught how to do a job, it’s usually a case of figuring it out for yourself—and that’s where online learning can amplify your skills.”

Scott presents the importance of online learning. Similar to Miller, she mentions self-paced, giving students new skills. However, the most important lesson is that change is constant. Online learning exemplifies this precept, and these skills help us move along.

“While both ways of learning have advantages and disadvantages, what is more effective is based off of the student themselves. Students can weigh the costs and benefits between online learning and face-to-face learning. They can decide for themselves what would be best for them. Online learning can be as effective as face-to-face learning if the student is committed to putting their time and effort to study alone.”

Wilkins questions the notion that online learning is inferior to a face-to-face classes. She begins by listing the benefits of online classes, including comfort and easier schedules, as with Miller and Scott. However, she also mentions its disadvantages, such as the possibility of students being distracted and a lack of bonding between classmates. But, of course, it’s all up to the student in the end: they should decide which type of education they prefer.

“One thing I hope people now realize is that education is not a one-size-fits-all model. While the self-disciplined nature of remote learning is not for everyone, it has allowed students like me to flourish unimpeded by the challenges presented by typical classroom settings.”

A 14-year-old student, Selinger wishes to continue her education online as schools return to physical classes amid the pandemic. She discusses the relief she feels from the lack of peer pressure, judgment, and a rigorous schedule. Controlling your study schedule relieves students of pressure, and Selinger believes this is optimal for success. She believes online learning opens a path to be better rather than to “return to normal.”

10.2 Pros and Cons of Online Learning

As you evaluate whether or not online learning is a good fit for you, it helps to consider the pros and cons. Some of these pros and cons will be more important to you than others, depending on your situation, so it’s important to consider your own specific circumstances and your learning strengths and weaknesses. Here are a few things to consider:

Schedule flexibility.  Increasingly, students have complicated schedules, often juggling several part-time jobs, family responsibilities, and other commitments. For many, education has been out of reach when traditional scheduled classes did not mesh with their busy schedules and obligations. Online learning means students can learn when it suits them. Students can do their readings throughout the day in between other commitments. They can work on and submit assignments in the middle of the night if that suits them. The time flexibility literally means that students who just couldn’t take classes on a traditional schedule can now further their education on a flexible schedule according to their needs.

Location flexibility. Online learning also opens up education for people who live in areas that do not have post-secondary institutions, especially remote communities. People can study at home or in local libraries or in convenient locations that eliminate the need to commute to physical institutions. This can save students hours of daily commuting time. It can also save students substantial amounts of money if it means they do not have to relocate to attend school. This is a significant factor for many who have financial concerns, housing concerns, or have a family member who cannot relocate due to employment or other obligations. Even people in big cities that do have post-secondary institutions welcome the opportunity to forgo a long commute to and from a college or university numerous times a week.

Multi-media. Learning happens more efficiently when several modalities are engaged. It helps to see (read or watch), hear (lecture or demonstration), do (labs, practice a skill, or write), as well as practice. Often people think that learning online will restrict learning because they’ll have to read everything. The opposite is actually true. With so many options for multi-media, modalities can be fully engaged through online learning. Courses can include video clips, lab demonstrations, and virtual labs where students can dissect something over and over until they’ve got it (as opposed to having one crack at it for an actual dissection). Courses can include hyperactive web links which can conveniently direct you to websites, web articles, and web demonstrations  that add fascinating content. Courses can include high quality diagrams, graphs, interactive demonstrations, video podcasts, animations, Ted-Talks, YouTube clips, interactive digital learning games, blogs, wikis, learning objects, virtual worlds, and much more. Edutainment is a term describing applications that incorporate multimedia entertainment with educational objectives. Quality online courses have an array of possibilities that can keep the curriculum current and engaging.

Classmates. Online learning offers a diversity in classmates that often exceeds that of a face-to-face class. As you get to know your classmates through class discussions, online forums, group work, and class presentations, you will often meet people from all over the world. This allows for some interesting perspectives and a more global way of thinking and interpreting information.

Course selection. Making the decision to learn online means that there are seemingly limitless options in course selection. You have the option of enrolling in a different college than the one you would have chosen if you had to move there. It doesn’t matter how far away it is if you are learning online. You can choose courses according to price, convenience, and interesting topics. Often you do not necessarily have to take all your courses from one institution if there are courses elsewhere that interest you. If you are taking courses from more than one institution, just be sure to check out transferability into the program you are enrolled in or want to graduate from, prior to taking a course from elsewhere so you do not lose credit for the course. See Chapter 13 The BC Transfer Process for more information.

Financial. Tuition and books are often priced the same for online and face-to-face courses, however, there are financial considerations that can make online learning more affordable. Firstly, the flexibility of online means you may not need to quit your job, since you can work on coursework around work hours. (Be cautious that you don’t work so much that you don’t have time for your courses, though.) Having an income while going to school can relieve a great amount of financial burden and reduce accumulation of student loans. Secondly, you will not have extra accommodation fees or relocation costs taking online courses since you will not have to move to go to school. Even if the college or university is local, you won’t have transportation costs including public transit costs or gas and parking fees to travel to and from the institution. If you are a parent, you will likely have less child-care costs. You can also save money, since students are likely to eat out more when traveling to a campus.

Combination of online and face-to-face. It can be an option to do some of your courses face-to-face and some online. This can cut down on commutes if you choose to do online courses on certain days and work your schedule accordingly. This strategy can take advantage of the pros of both. It can also allow you to get to know instructors from a program in person during your face-to-face classes, giving you a personal connection with them for your online classes. Another use for combining formats is to take missing prerequisites online so that you don’t miss an opportunity to take a course according to your education plan. This can often save you from having to add an extra year to your education. Another pro of combining formats is that you can choose to take electives for your program online in the summer months, to get ahead on your education plan, or to lighten the load in the regular school year. There can be many advantages of taking a combination of online and face-to-face courses.

Author’s Story: Pros of Online Learning

I did a Master’s in online learning. I had an education leave from the college where I work, so I was free to travel and could have chosen to attend any one of several institutions. However, I chose to take my program online. I did this for several reasons. Since I was learning about online learning, it made sense to experience it firsthand while I was studying about it. It gave me many examples to draw from to demonstrate different learning theories.  It also gave me the freedom to travel around while I was working on it.

My program was a lot of work – to which I was committed. Even still, I took advantage of some of the fringe benefits of online learning. I spent the fall in my hometown, where I saw lots of family and old friends. Though my course load was heavy and I was working on my schooling 10-12 hours a day, it still meant that I had tea breaks with my mom, lunches and dinners with different family members and friends, and had the ability to just be around them even though I was busy a lot of the time. I look back at that time as incredibly precious. I otherwise could never have spent so much time with my mother in my adult years as I did that fall, and it was wonderful. Online learning made that possible.

I was fortunate in that I went to the Dominican Republic for the winter semester. I rented out my home which more than paid for the rent on my beautiful villa by the ocean. I kept a rigorous schedule for my program. I woke up to the sounds of roosters crowing each morning at 6 a.m. I made coffee and went out onto the deck overlooking the ocean. I did my computer work in the morning, contributing to forum discussions and other course work. I did a work out,  made breakfast, and continued on the computer. After lunch, I went down to the beach, got settled into my lounge chair, did my readings, and took notes. I went for a long swim in the ocean every afternoon.  I dried off in the sun on my lounge chair while I continued my readings. In the evenings, I went back to the villa and worked on my assignments. This was my schedule all winter. I had the odd excursion and time out with people I met there, but my time included a lot of studying and writing papers. I had an amazing winter in the Dominican and met some incredible people. I had the opportunity to volunteer at a school there, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I learned a lot about their culture. The experience was life-enhancing, and I am so glad that I did my studies that way.

Time management. You have to be very organized when you take courses online. It is entirely up to you to stay on-track. Although this is true in a face-to-face class as well, students often feel more pressure when they have scheduled classes. They don’t want to miss class or get behind. They have classmates around them talking about upcoming assignments and tests, who inadvertently pressure them into getting things done. When they know they have class Monday morning, for example, they make sure they complete the course work that is required before that class. These scheduled things are more conducive to keeping on track. Online students are notorious for procrastinating and getting behind. It is vital to keep a schedule as if you were attending face-to-face classes. Once your study times are in your schedule, don’t divert from the schedule unless it is critically important. (That doesn’t include that your friend called you up and asked you to go to the show!) You have to get used to telling people you are busy with your school work and that you are not available. Review Chapter 7: Time Management for further time management strategies.

Motivation. Motivation is another key factor for success in online learning. If you are constantly talking yourself out of doing assignments, doubting your abilities, or not willing to give it your all, this can seriously impede your ability to be successful. Some people know themselves and are aware that they don’t have the motivation, self-drive, and determination to be consistent in their online studies. They will make the sacrifices required to commit to face-to-face courses. In other words, they are willing to commute and change their schedules to accommodate their scheduled classes, because they know that, for them personally, they are likely to be more successful in their courses.

Weak readers. Online learning most often involves a lot of reading. Some learners are strong readers and find they learn more by reading than listening in a class. Others find reading tedious and lose focus. If reading is a struggle, you may want to find out the differences in the amount of reading between the specific face-to-face classes and the online classes you are interested in taking. This may have a bearing on which format you choose.

Limited computer skills. Those who have very little experience with computers will find it more challenging doing online courses. As well as learning the course material and expectations of the instructor, these people will have to deal with learning computer skills concurrently. This is not necessarily a con as they will benefit greatly, however, it would be important to allow extra time needed for dealing with the learning curve of gaining the necessary computer skills. Of course, taking a face-to-face course likely will require computer skills as well, so it is wise to gain them regardless. Likely, it will initially be a little more challenging with an online course. Prior to starting online courses, it would be beneficial to take a computer skills course at a local community college, if possible.

The social aspect. Some learners enjoy the dynamics of being in a physical classroom. They get to form a personal relationship with the instructor. They meet classmates in person and can form study groups. They can benefit from the answers to questions that others ask or from the class discussions that arise. After class, they can easily discuss issues that they didn’t understand or they can go deeper into an issue, furthering understanding. Even moral support is a beneficial perk of having face-to-face classes. Other classmates can detect whether or not you are struggling and can offer support, lend materials, and offer a much needed smile. Many people really appreciate the social aspect of attending classes and being part of a college or university where they can join teams and clubs, have a drink at the campus pub, live in residence, and develop a healthy social life. This is particularly important for young students who have recently left home after completing high school. Older students who already have children and jobs, may not necessarily be looking to expand their social lives.

The format of some online courses are specifically designed to include a social aspect to learning. The course incorporates group assignments and forum discussions. Students get to know each other even though they may all be in different locales. Other courses don’t have any social component to them. Often in these online courses, students can feel very alone as they do their courses. If the social aspect is important to you, find out how the courses are structured at the institution where you are considering taking your program.

Author’s Story: Social Interaction Online

I wouldn’t have believed that social interaction online could match social interaction in a face-to-face classroom, but I experienced it. Of course, it depends on the structure of the course because some courses don’t facilitate it in their set-up.

During my Master’s online, the courses were designed using a constructivist philosophy. We regularly had to do group work and participate in online discussions. I got to know many of the people in my cohort. As a result, I got to know those I worked well with, and those I didn’t necessarily want to work with again. As group work assignments were assigned, we had the option of choosing our groups. I went through the forum discussions to see people who I would likely work well with, and eventually I had specific people that I knew I worked well with, so we planned to work together in future assignments.

In order to do our assignments, we emailed, messaged, and Skyped often. We contributed to group documents, and commented regularly on each other’s contributions. It became quite natural to be working together with folks who were all over the world. I got to know them, we asked each other about things going on in our lives, and encouraged each other through challenging times. I celebrated with a class mate in Greece, who got engaged. I knew throughout the term that she was hoping for a proposal, and I was genuinely excited when it finally happened. I learned about others’ children and their struggles. I discovered others’ tips and tricks for fitting the program into their busy lives. We regularly had class discussions about different concepts, and I learned a lot from my classmates.

When I went to the graduation ceremony, I met many fellow classmates and instructors for the first time in person, and yet it felt like I already really knew them. I did. It was a time of celebration. Even long after graduation, I am still in touch with a few classmates. We have contacted each other to catch up, get professional advice, and even to network for jobs. The social interaction in my online courses contributed richly to my educational experience.

Exercise: Evaluate if Online Learning is a Good Personal Option

Consider the several factors above and any others that apply. Relate them to your own personal circumstance, and evaluate whether online learning is a good personal option for you. As you evaluate consider the following:

  • your options
  • your circumstances that affect your ability to take classes
  • your strengths and weaknesses
  • your best choice

Write an answer that includes the above factors and explains why you came to the conclusion you reached.

How Effective Is Online Learning? What the Research Does and Doesn’t Tell Us

The times have dictated school closings and the rapid expansion of online education. Can online lessons replace in-school time?

Clearly online time cannot provide many of the informal social interactions students have at school, but how will online courses do in terms of moving student learning forward? Research to date gives us some clues and also points us to what we could be doing to support students who are most likely to struggle in the online setting.

The use of virtual courses among K-12 students has grown rapidly in recent years. Florida, for example, requires all high school students to take at least one online course. Online learning can take a number of different forms. Often people think of Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, where thousands of students watch a video online and fill out questionnaires or take exams based on those lectures.

In the online setting, students may have more distractions and less oversight, which can reduce their motivation.

Most online courses, however, particularly those serving K-12 students, have a format much more similar to in-person courses. The teacher helps to run virtual discussion among the students, assigns homework, and follows up with individual students. Sometimes these courses are synchronous (teachers and students all meet at the same time) and sometimes they are asynchronous (non-concurrent). In both cases, the teacher is supposed to provide opportunities for students to engage thoughtfully with subject matter, and students, in most cases, are required to interact with each other virtually.

Coronavirus and Schools

Online courses provide opportunities for students. Students in a school that doesn’t offer statistics classes may be able to learn statistics with virtual lessons. If students fail algebra, they may be able to catch up during evenings or summer using online classes, and not disrupt their math trajectory at school. So, almost certainly, online classes sometimes benefit students.

In comparisons of online and in-person classes, however, online classes aren’t as effective as in-person classes for most students. Only a little research has assessed the effects of online lessons for elementary and high school students, and even less has used the “gold standard” method of comparing the results for students assigned randomly to online or in-person courses. Jessica Heppen and colleagues at the American Institutes for Research and the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research randomly assigned students who had failed second semester Algebra I to either face-to-face or online credit recovery courses over the summer. Students’ credit-recovery success rates and algebra test scores were lower in the online setting. Students assigned to the online option also rated their class as more difficult than did their peers assigned to the face-to-face option.

Most of the research on online courses for K-12 students has used large-scale administrative data, looking at otherwise similar students in the two settings. One of these studies, by June Ahn of New York University and Andrew McEachin of the RAND Corp., examined Ohio charter schools; I did another with colleagues looking at Florida public school coursework. Both studies found evidence that online coursetaking was less effective.

It is not surprising that in-person courses are, on average, more effective. Being in person with teachers and other students creates social pressures and benefits that can help motivate students to engage. Some students do as well in online courses as in in-person courses, some may actually do better, but, on average, students do worse in the online setting, and this is particularly true for students with weaker academic backgrounds.

Students who struggle in in-person classes are likely to struggle even more online. While the research on virtual schools in K-12 education doesn’t address these differences directly, a study of college students that I worked on with Stanford colleagues found very little difference in learning for high-performing students in the online and in-person settings. On the other hand, lower performing students performed meaningfully worse in online courses than in in-person courses.

But just because students who struggle in in-person classes are even more likely to struggle online doesn’t mean that’s inevitable. Online teachers will need to consider the needs of less-engaged students and work to engage them. Online courses might be made to work for these students on average, even if they have not in the past.

Just like in brick-and-mortar classrooms, online courses need a strong curriculum and strong pedagogical practices. Teachers need to understand what students know and what they don’t know, as well as how to help them learn new material. What is different in the online setting is that students may have more distractions and less oversight, which can reduce their motivation. The teacher will need to set norms for engagement—such as requiring students to regularly ask questions and respond to their peers—that are different than the norms in the in-person setting.

Online courses are generally not as effective as in-person classes, but they are certainly better than no classes. A substantial research base developed by Karl Alexander at Johns Hopkins University and many others shows that students, especially students with fewer resources at home, learn less when they are not in school. Right now, virtual courses are allowing students to access lessons and exercises and interact with teachers in ways that would have been impossible if an epidemic had closed schools even a decade or two earlier. So we may be skeptical of online learning, but it is also time to embrace and improve it.

The Pros and Cons of Online Learning and Online Classes

Going to college is a big decision—and it has become more accessible than ever before. Whether you’re attending a university for the first time or returning to finish your degree, you have the opportunity to choose online vs. in-person classes.

Extended closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic forced most institutions to migrate to online learning in 2020. Though campuses have reopened, many students are opting to continue their studies online. According to the BestColleges 2022 Online Education Trends Report , 60 percent of remote learners are choosing to enroll in online courses regardless of whether their campuses maintain normal operations.

Upon reviewing the advantages of online education, it’s easy to see why. Universities like Concordia University Texas (CTX) give you the ability to earn a high-quality degree completely online, without sacrificing the student support services you’ve come to expect from in-person learning.

Still, you’ll have to weigh the pros and cons of online learning for yourself to determine if it’s the best decision for you. Keep reading to learn about some important considerations.

The Pros of Online Learning

When you partner with a university that is well-versed in serving online students, you’ll have the opportunity to develop personally and professionally in a format that works in tandem with the responsibilities of your busy life. Consider the following benefits to online learning:

1. Flexibility

Online programs like the ones at CTX are designed to allow busy students to continue their education without interrupting personal commitments outside of school. Accessible from almost anywhere, as long as you have internet access and can commit to meeting weekly deadlines, you’ll be able to complete your assignments in the morning, at night, or any time between.

The flexibility that online learning provides is key if you’re balancing multiple responsibilities at once. Today’s students don’t necessarily have the ability to drop everything when pursuing their degree. The freedom to complete your school schedule around the other priorities in your life can help you maintain much-needed balance as you tend to family and work needs in addition to advancing your education.

3. No Commute

The fuller your plate gets, the more you find yourself doing the mental gymnastics required to ensure you make it to each appointment, meeting, class, sporting event, or recital on time. Factoring in the commute needed to get from place to place only adds to the endless cycle of “busyness.” One of the major advantages of online learning is that it eliminates the need to commute to campus. With the time you save, you can finish your coursework sooner and allocate more time toward the other priorities in your life.

4. Strong Time-Management Skills

One primary difference of online vs. in person classes is that online students are responsible for managing their time. You may be provided with a list of due dates for assignments, asynchronous class discussions, quizzes, and exams. It will be up to you to ensure you keep up with the course load and hit those deadlines.

As an online student, you’ll need to develop a study routine that’s right for you. This will help provide you with a strong sense of independence and initiative, while developing and refining your time management skills—all of which can be directly applied to your career, improving your efficiency and productivity at work.

5. Options for every Learning Style

People learn differently. Some are visual learners, while others are avid note-takers. There are also individuals who need to hear the material to absorb it. And for many, some combination of all three is needed to retain the material. One of the undeniable advantages of online learning is that it enables you to employ the learning methods that work best for you.

Some institutions offer a lower price-per-credit for online courses, as well. For example, the tuition per credit hour for online undergraduate students at CTX is about half the cost for in-person undergraduate students.

8. Access to Academic Support Resources

One element that often keeps people from enrolling in online programs is the preconceived notion that you’ll be largely left to fend for yourself as an online student. This couldn’t be further from the truth for online students at CTX.

It’s important to seek out an institution that offers the same quality of comprehensive student support services to online learners as it does to those attending courses onsite. At CTX, online students have access to the same robust suite of supportive resources. Some examples include tutoring opportunities, counseling services, technology help, assistance with financial aid, and accommodations for students with disabilities, such as extra time to take tests.

The Cons of Online Learning

While the benefits are clearly numerous, it’s helpful to keep in mind that there are both pros and cons of online learning, depending on what you’re looking for in your education. 1. Less In-Person Interaction

When learning online, you can see your professors face-to-face virtually, but you don’t typically interact with them in person. Some wonder if this could act as a barrier to high-quality, interactive education.

Because everyone in an online class is required to participate, the discussions actually become much more engaging. The online environment provides a format for everyone to contribute, from the most introverted to the most extroverted students.

Many find this to be a distinct advantage, as it allows them to sort through their thoughts before engaging in the group discussion. “Online discussions provide ‘wait times’ for everyone to reflect and think of questions, which creates amazing dialogue,” says Dr. Alex Herron, the associate vice president of digital operations at CTX.

2. You're Limited to Certain Majors

Not every major is eligible for online learning, so the degrees you can choose from are limited. Some programs, especially the disciplines that require hands-on experience, simply cannot be translated into an online format.

For example, the Music major at CTX requires in-person classes. Students need one-on-one interaction with their professors to receive immediate feedback and help with playing an instrument or mastering a solo.

While not all programs can be offered online, the University does offer online degrees in a wide range of disciplines. Additionally, CTX offers all its graduate programs online—although in some cases, a brief on-campus residency may be required.

3. Increased Autonomy

Classes on campus require students to meet in person multiple times per week and finish coursework within specific deadlines. These factors work together to create a daily routine for students. While online learning also has regular deadlines, students aren’t held to the same regimented course schedule that requires them to meet at a specific time each day.

As highlighted above, this flexibility affords some undeniable perks. But it’s also true that with more freedom comes more responsibility. Online students must develop a personal routine to ensure they complete coursework on time while balancing their other priorities.

The professors in CTX online programs make themselves easily accessible and encourage students to attend optional virtual meetings. Regular check-ins of this nature help faculty gain a clearer understanding of whether their students might be struggling. “I always tell my students, ‘I don’t know how you are doing unless you tell me,’” Dr. Herron explains.

4. Technological Requirements

Success as an online student is dependent on access to a computer and reliable internet. Some students find they have to spend more money on devices, like a faster computer or one with more memory. And since everything you do for online classes is on the computer, you’ll likely encounter more technological issues that may be difficult to overcome from afar (e.g., connection problems, server errors, etc.).

To minimize technological obstacles, all of our online courses are web-based. This means all you’ll need is access to an internet browser, eliminating any requirement to download various programs and/or applications to your computer.

The University also gives online students access to the entire Microsoft Office 365 Suite (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams) so that you don’t have to purchase the programs independently. Finally, for any issues that do arise, the Personal Support Center is available 24/7 via phone, chat, or email to help students with technological issues.

5. You Might Experience Distractions

Physical classrooms help to minimize distractions and allow professors to see if you’re paying attention. When you take online classes, you’re responsible for finding a workspace that provides an environment where you can learn effectively and without unnecessary interruption.

Online students who live locally are always welcome to come to campus. Set on 440 beautiful acres in Northwest Austin, there are plenty of quiet places to study, such as the CTX Library, outdoor areas, or empty classrooms.

If you do find it difficult to concentrate, make sure to let your online professors know. The more they know, the better they can support you.

6. Fewer Networking Opportunities

Students taking virtual classes have plenty of chances to connect with their peers through discussion boards and other online tools. But one of the obvious cons of online learning is that it doesn’t provide as many opportunities to network with the entire campus community.

Education is an important asset to the eradication of poverty and the achievement of better standards of living. In the recent past, most governments have considered education a fundamental pre-requisite for social and economic development. Due to digital advancements in almost every sector, education has been made available online remotely. The discussion as to whether it is beneficial to the society has emanated, and the study needs to compare and contrast the pros and cons associated with e-learning and on-campus learning (Bornstein, 2012). For many years now, anybody who has an interest in learning had to visit an institution physically for enrollment and attending lessons. The use of the internet globally has increased rampantly for decades, making it possible for e-learning to work. Today, anyone who wishes to learn without physically attending lessons at the campus can have access to education. The introduction of e-learning as an alternative to on-campus education is transforming the face of the sector. Many learning institutions in the world have embraced the advancement, and have put in place the right infrastructure to support e-learning. The paper aims to compare and contrast e-learning versus on-campus education in the 21 st  century, reviewing their merits and demerits, and importantly, what is expected in the future of the two (Chai & Kong, 2017).

Online Learning

E-learning has been made possible by the high spread of internet use globally. The first merit that is associated with e-learning is the flexibility of online programs. People with jobs and other family responsibilities can be able to create time to attend to lessons online and take exams. Research indicates that most of those who have enrolled for online degrees are people with families, jobs, and other responsibilities to handle. Second, online education is relatively affordable as compared to on-campus learning. There are no expenses that are attached to commuting, food, shelter, and clothing. For instance, when one enrolls for on-campus education, they incur traveling expenses, food expenses, and other related expenses, making e-learning way much affordable (Garrison, 2016).

Third, e-learning has no judgment as it does not feature the age, ability, or needs of any student enrolling. This fact makes it suitable for those with special needs and capabilities. Fourth, e-leaning allows students to access a wide range of materials, which makes it easier for one to conduct their research. Notably, online education uses the internet to provide the necessary materials to students. With the internet, one can be able to access any resource available remotely. On-campus education is limited to resources that one can be able to access physically within a given period (Garrison, 2016). Lastly, individuals with impairments such as vision, hearing, and others can conveniently learn through online programs. As such, e-learning is perceived to be an essential introduction to the education sector (Chai & Kong, 2017).

On the other hand, e-learning has associated demerits that make it inconvenient for others. First, it requires the learner to have different levels of computer knowledge depending on the course one enrolls. This might be difficult for some who do not have the necessary skills, making it less convenient for them. Second, there is no personal contact with classmates, making learners lack a sense of belonging. This makes it seem more of one-way education as one does not engage with the rest of the class (Edmundson, 2012). Third, a person with credentials acquired through e-learning has fewer chances of being hired than one who attends classes on campus. Fourth, e-learning requires self-discipline of the highest order since there are many distractions, especially when one is studying from home. Equally, one has to develop the ability to multitask, work in isolation from others, and be stress-tolerant. Lastly, e-learning provides fewer options for degrees that students can be able to choose online. For instance, if one is interested in learning a science-related course that requires them to visit the lab, e-learning cannot offer such programs online, making it less effective.

Time is an essential value in the world, and accessing of classrooms and other services online saves time a lot. In the 21 st  century, many are finding it easy to adopt the digital way of learning due to its convenience. With more advancement in technology, the future of e-learning is changing and becoming more popular. Institutions are also working hard to ensure that all those courses, which can be offered online, are rolled out for those interested (Edmundson, 2012). Studies indicate that many have embarked on using digital means to study as they can access more resources online. With time, there is a likelihood that those taking degrees available online need not to physically attend lessons or visit the campus premises totally. Through e-learning, institutions can integrate learning systems online that allows them to share crucial information on various matters that relate to education.

On-Campus Learning

On-campus education has faced reputable competition from the emerging e-learning programs. It is essential to examine what advantages and disadvantages that are associated with on-campus learning in the 21 st  century. First, on-campus learning enables students to bond with others and develop a sense of belonging with others. Moreover, with online campus, one can share and form a networking bond with the rest through group discussions and other programs that are only possible at campus premises. Second, on-campus learning allows a student to choose a variety of available degrees, unlike e-learning, that has specific courses that one should choose from. Technical courses that require one’s presence cannot be offered through e-learning. Third, students who enroll for on-campus education can access a variety of learning styles, including lectures, discussion groups, and study groups, audio, and visual methods, among others. Lastly, access to college amenities is a boost for those who enroll in on-campus training. Students can access laboratories, computers, libraries, the gym, and student’s social events, among others.

On-campus learning has disadvantages that make it less convenient over e-learning programs. Attending classes at the campus is often associated with rigid structures, which are mandatory, time-consuming, and obliging. Second, it attracts additional expenses of commuting, food, books, dormitories, and higher tuition fee due to administration overhead costs. High costs associated might prove unaffordable to some hence the need for them to enroll for e-learning. Third, the campus environment might not be suitable for individuals with special needs and those who are socially inept. Also, people with obligations and other responsibilities might find it hard enrolling in on-campus education. Lastly, on-campus education requires one to physically look for employment after graduation, which has proved challenging for many.

On-campus education has experienced tremendous changes over the last few decades. However, with the increased use of the internet and the emergence of e-learning, most institutions are finding it easy to adopt new developments, which have reduced the popularity of on-campus education. Currently, there is a close competition between e-learning and on-campus learning. Those students with obligations, jobs, and family responsibilities are enrolling for e-learning, while those who are less engaged tend to register for on-campus education (Bornstein, 2012). The choice of approach one uses depends on some factors, including financial implications associated, obligations that one has, and the availability of programs that they need online, among others. For instance, the fact that some courses cannot be studied online due to their technicality makes on-campus education remain relevant in the 21 st  century. There is a need for institutions to improve services in a bid to lure many to enroll for on-campus learning.

To sum it up, online learning seems to be the real deal in the 21 st  century as many people and institutions are shifting interest. An institution without the infrastructure to support e-learning might not have much to show off in the education sector. Notably, thirty years ago, education had a different face than what it seems now. This is due to changes that have been experienced in the IT sector, which have made it possible for institutions to come up with e-learning programs for students. Instant innovation in the education sector has also contributed to dynamic changes in the education sector, necessitating adjustment from institutions. Information sharing for learning purposes is on the rise as made possible by internet use. Many are considering education as a significant incentive towards poverty reduction and development within the society.

Following are the key benefits of online learning. They include;

  • Flexibility: The best thing about online learning is that it allows students to study at a time and place of their choice. They can enjoy flexible schedules, especially if they have a job or need to care for children or other family members. It gives them the option to continue with school from whatever location they choose, be that from home, a place of worship or any other location that is convenient to them.
  • Affordable: Online learning makes higher education available and affordable to students that might not be able to go to school otherwise. Courses cost about the same as they would in an offline setting because they don’t include equipment and supplies. They do, however, provide everything that students need to take the courses and receive a good education.
  • Convenience: Students can access their lessons from anywhere there is an internet connection, which means they always have the ability to learn when it is most convenient for them. They can take breaks from what they are doing or study in between other tasks without having to wait until they can get to their computer.
  • Experienced Tutors: With online learning, students gain access to experts in the field and receive training from experts who have had years of experience with that particular subject. Online tutoring also gives student more flexibility and opportunity for mentoring and one-on-one training than an offline setting might including face-to-face tutoring.
  • Flexible Schedules for Online Learning: Online learning allows students to schedule their lessons accordingly, especially if they are also working, need to take care of children or older family members or have other obligations that would prevent them from attending traditional classes on campus. This flexibility makes it easier for people with less free time to continue going to school without worrying about when classes are occurring.

Cons of Online Learning:

Following are a few cons of online learning. They include;

This can sometimes lead to a lack of interaction between students and their instructors, which may be problematic depending on the situation.
  • Poor Quality Lessons Sometimes Offered: Some online courses may not provide the same, high-quality lessons or lectures that students would find in an offline setting. This is usually because they lack the same motivation to create interesting content when they know students can access it from anywhere and at any time.
  • Distance Learning: Some online courses do not offer distance learning options which means students may need to travel to school in order to participate.   • Lack of Accreditation: Accrediting agencies do not always accredit online courses, which means students may not be able to use the lessons they learn from them to get their degree. The use of online technology is ubiquitous in everyday life, including education. Increasingly, people today find online learning more effective due to advancements in technology. The following essay compares the pros and cons of online learning.

Online education offers the advantage of allowing students to attend classes from any location. It also allows schools to reach an extensive network of students instead of being constrained by geographical borders. Also, sessions can be recorded, archived, and shared and made available for future use. Thus, the learning materials are accessible at any time that is convenient for the students. In addition to that, online learning also provides teachers with a flexible delivery method for the classes. In addition to traditional textbooks, online resources such as videos, PDFs, and podcasts can be incorporated into the lesson plan to help educators be more efficient. Further, compared to traditional learning, online education is significantly more affordable. During online courses, expenses such as transportation costs, meals, and, most notably, their renting costs, if any, are cut down . Moreover, all course materials are available online, creating an eco-friendly, paperless educational environment.

In contrast, the biggest challenge of online learning for many students is keeping their attention on the screen for long periods. Social media and other sites can easily distract students who are learning online. A reliable connection that has decent speed is hard to find in smaller cities and towns. The learning process can be disrupted if students or teachers do not have a consistent internet connection. Furthermore, online learning entails an increase in screen time . Children spending so much time in front of a screen is a concern for many parents. It is also common for students to develop bad posture when hunched over the e-device or affects eyesight.

In conclusion, learning online has some advantages and some limitations. Even though it may be convenient for some people, it cannot completely replace traditional classroom teaching. In my opinion, the positives of online education eventually surpass the downsides.

As far as the merits are concerned, studying on the internet enables students to make use of flexible timing. It also costs far less than physically going to attend classes. Moreover, there is an option to learn anything desirable at a suitable timing. This offers extremely  profound  opportunities for learners to acquire new skills and strengthen the existing knowledge by sitting at the comfortable couch in their own living room. For instance, a student residing in a remote village can learn a course that is affiliated with an international education body. This way, distant learning is not just time-saving but remunerative as well.

Quite contrarily, with online courses, there is always more concentration on  theoretical learning . Online classes have the dearth of practical aspects of learning. Also, there is restricted interaction between the teacher and students. It is evident that taking online classes is not the cup of tea for every student, especially the ones who are into learning in detail. One of the recent studies has shown that a great number of students found classroom teaching more effective than online classes.

Concluding this topic, it can be said that the ever-evolving availability of online learning has  reaped popularity among youngsters. It is considered beneficial by many, and ineffective by others. The prominence here can be given to the effectiveness of online learning as the cost-effective method of gaining education in comparison to classroom teaching.

Introduction to Online Education

Online learning is one of the new innovative study methods that have been introduced in the pedagogy field. In the last few years, there has been a great shift in the training methods. Students can now learn remotely using the internet and computers.

Online learning comes in many forms and has been developing with the introduction of new technologies. Most universities, high schools, and other institutions in the world have all instituted this form of learning, and the student population in the online class is increasing fast. There has been a lot of research on the impacts of online education as compared to ordinary classroom education.

If the goal is to draw a conclusion of online education, considerable differences between the online learning environment and classroom environment should be acknowledged. In the former, teachers and students don’t meet physically as opposed to the latter, where they interact face to face. In this essay, the challenges and impact of online classes on students, teachers, and institutions involved were examined.

Thesis Statement about Online Classes

Thus, the thesis statement about online classes will be as follows:

Online learning has a positive impact on the learners, teachers, and the institution offering these courses.

Online learning or E learning is a term used to describe various learning environments that are conducted and supported by the use of computers and the internet. There are a number of definitions and terminologies that are used to describe online learning.

These include E learning, distance learning, and computer learning, among others (Anon, 2001). Distant learning is one of the terminologies used in E learning and encompasses all learning methods that are used to train students that are geographically away from the training school. Online learning, on the other hand, is used to describe all the learning methods that are supported by the Internet (Moore et al., 2011).

Another terminology that is used is E learning which most authors have described as a learning method that is supported by the use of computers, web-enabled communication, and the use of new technological tools that enhance communication (Spector, 2008). Other terminologies that are used to describe this form of online learning are virtual learning, collaborative learning, web-based learning, and computer-supported collaborative learning (Conrad, 2006).

Impacts of Online Classes on Students

Various studies and articles document the merits, demerits, and challenges of online studies. These studies show that online study is far beneficial to the students, teachers, and the institution in general and that the current challenges can be overcome through technological advancement and increasing efficiency of the learning process.

One of the key advantages of online learning is the ability of students to study in their own comfort. For a long time, students had to leave their comfort areas and attend lectures. This change in environment causes a lack of concentration in students. In contrast, E-learning enables the students to choose the best environment for study, and this promotes their ability to understand. As a result, students enjoy the learning process as compared to conventional classroom learning.

Another benefit is time and cost savings. Online students are able to study at home, and this saves them travel and accommodation costs. This is in contrast with the classroom environment, where learners have to pay for transport and accommodation costs as well as any other costs associated with the learning process.

Online study has been found to reduce the workload on the tutors. Most of the online notes and books are availed to the students, and this reduces the teacher’s workload. Due to the availability of teaching materials online, tutors are not required to search for materials. Teachers usually prepare lessons, and this reduces the task of training students over and over again.

Accessibility to learning materials is another benefit of online learning. Students participating in online study have unlimited access to learning materials, which gives them the ability to study effectively and efficiently. On the other hand, students in the classroom environment have to take notes as the lecture progress, and these notes may not be accurate as compared to the materials uploaded on the websites.

Unlimited resources are another advantage of online study. Traditionally, learning institutions were limited in the number of students that could study in the classroom environment. The limitations of facilities such as lecture theaters and teachers limited student enrollment in schools (Burgess & Russell, 2003).

However, with the advent of online studies, physical limitations imposed by classrooms, tutors, and other resources have been eliminated. A vast number of students can now study in the same institution and be able to access the learning materials online. The use of online media for training enables a vast number of students to access materials online, and this promotes the learning process.

Promoting online study has been found by most researchers to open the students to vast resources that are found on the internet. Most of the students in the classroom environment rely on the tutors’ notes and explanations for them to understand a given concept.

However, students using the web to study most of the time are likely to be exposed to the vast online educational resources that are available. This results in the students gaining a better understanding of the concept as opposed to those in the classroom environment (Berge & Giles, 2008).

An online study environment allows tutors to update their notes and other materials much faster as compared to the classroom environment. This ensures that the students receive up-to-date information on a given study area.

One of the main benefits of E-learning to institutions is the ability to provide training to a large number of students located in any corner of the world. These students are charged training fees, and this increases the money available to the institution. This extra income can be used to develop new educational facilities, and these will promote education further (Gilli et al., 2002).

Despite the many advantages that online study has in transforming the learning process, there are some challenges imposed by the method. One of the challenges is the technological limitations of the current computers, which affect the quality of the learning materials and the learning process in general.

Low download speed and slow internet connectivity affect the availability of learning materials. This problem is, however, been reduced through the application of new software and hardware elements that have high access speeds. This makes it easier to download learning materials and applications. As computing power increases, better and faster computers are being unveiled, and these will enable better access to online study facilities.

Another disadvantage of online learning as compared to the classroom environment is the lack of feedback from the students. In the classroom environment, students listen to the lecture and ask the tutors questions and clarifications any issues they didn’t understand. In the online environment, the response by the teacher may not be immediate, and students who don’t understand a given concept may find it hard to liaise with the teachers.

The problem is, however, been circumvented by the use of simple explanation methods, slideshows, and encouraging discussion forums between the teachers and students. In the discussion forums, students who don’t understand a concept can leave a comment or question, which will be answered by the tutor later.

Like any other form of learning, online studies have a number of benefits and challenges. It is, therefore, not logical to discredit online learning due to the negative impacts of this training method. Furthermore, the benefits of e-learning far outweigh the challenges.

Conclusion about Online Education

In culmination, a comparative study between classroom study and online study was carried out. The study was done by examining the findings recorded in books and journals on the applicability of online learning to students. The study revealed that online learning has many benefits as compared to conventional learning in the classroom environment.

Though online learning has several challenges, such as a lack of feedback from students and a lack of the proper technology to effectively conduct online learning, these limitations can be overcome by upgrading the E-Leaning systems and the use of online discussion forums and new web-based software.

In conclusion, online learning is beneficial to the students, tutors, and the institution offering these courses. I would therefore recommend that online learning be implemented in all learning institutions, and research on how to improve this learning process should be carried out.

Screens are everywhere in schools. do they actually help kids learn.

A few weeks ago, a parent who lives in Texas asked me how much my kids were using screens to do schoolwork in their classrooms. She wasn’t talking about personal devices. (Smartwatches and smartphones are banned in my children’s schools during the school day, which I’m very happy about; I find any argument for allowing these devices in the classroom to be risible.) No, this parent was talking about screens that are school sanctioned, like iPads and Chromebooks issued to children individually for educational activities.

I’m embarrassed to say that I couldn’t answer her question because I had never asked or even thought about asking. Partly because the Covid-19 era made screens imperative in an instant — as one ed-tech executive told my colleague Natasha Singer in 2021, the pandemic “sped the adoption of technology in education by easily five to 10 years.” In the early Covid years, when my older daughter started using a Chromebook to do assignments for second and third grade, I was mostly just relieved that she had great teachers and seemed to be learning what she needed to know. By the time she was in fifth grade and the world was mostly back to normal, I knew she took her laptop to school for in-class assignments, but I never asked for specifics about how devices were being used. I trusted her teachers and her school implicitly.

In New York State, ed tech is often discussed as an equity problem — with good reason: At home, less privileged children might not have access to personal devices and high-speed internet that would allow them to complete digital assignments. But in our learn-to-code society, in which computer skills are seen as a meal ticket and the humanities as a ticket to the unemployment line, there seems to be less chatter about whether there are too many screens in our kids’ day-to-day educational environment beyond the classes that are specifically tech focused. I rarely heard details about what these screens are adding to our children’s literacy, math, science or history skills.

And screens truly are everywhere. For example, according to 2022 data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, only about 8 percent of eighth graders in public schools said their math teachers “never or hardly ever” used computers or digital devices to teach math, 37 percent said their math teachers used this technology half or more than half the time, and 44 percent said their math teachers used this technology all or most of the time.

As is often the case with rapid change, “the speed at which new technologies and intervention models are reaching the market has far outpaced the ability of policy researchers to keep up with evaluating them,” according to a dazzlingly thorough review of the research on education technology by Maya Escueta, Andre Joshua Nickow, Philip Oreopoulos and Vincent Quan published in The Journal of Economic Literature in 2020.

Despite the relative paucity of research, particularly on in-class use of tech, Escueta and her co-authors put together “a comprehensive list of all publicly available studies on technology-based education interventions that report findings from studies following either of two research designs, randomized controlled trials or regression discontinuity designs.”

They found that increasing access to devices didn’t always lead to positive academic outcomes. In a couple of cases, it just increased the amount of time kids were spending on devices playing games. They wrote, “We found that simply providing students with access to technology yields largely mixed results. At the K-12 level, much of the experimental evidence suggests that giving a child a computer may have limited impacts on learning outcomes but generally improves computer proficiency and other cognitive outcomes.”

Some of the most promising research is around computer-assisted learning, which the researchers defined as “computer programs and other software applications designed to improve academic skills.” They cited a 2016 randomized study of 2,850 seventh-grade math students in Maine who used an online homework tool. The authors of that study “found that the program improved math scores for treatment students by 0.18 standard deviations. This impact is particularly noteworthy, given that treatment students used the program, on average, for less than 10 minutes per night, three to four nights per week,” according to Escueta and her co-authors.

They also explained that in the classroom, computer programs may help teachers meet the needs of students who are at different levels, since “when confronted with a wide range of student ability, teachers often end up teaching the core curriculum and tailoring instruction to the middle of the class.” A good program, they found, could help provide individual attention and skill building for kids at the bottom and the top, as well. There are computer programs for reading comprehension that have shown similar positive results in the research. Anecdotally: My older daughter practices her Spanish language skills using an app, and she hand-writes Spanish vocabulary words on index cards. The combination seems to be working well for her.

Though their review was published in 2020, before the data was out on our grand remote-learning experiment, Escueta and her co-authors found that fully online remote learning did not work as well as hybrid or in-person school. I called Thomas Dee, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, who said that in light of earlier studies “and what we’re coming to understand about the long-lived effects of the pandemic on learning, it underscores for me that there’s a social dimension to learning that we ignore at our peril. And I think technology can often strip that away.”

Still, Dee summarized the entire topic of ed tech to me this way: “I don’t want to be black and white about this. I think there are really positive things coming from technology.” But he said that they are “meaningful supports on the margins, not fundamental changes in the modality of how people learn.”

I’d add that the implementation of any technology also matters a great deal; any educational tool can be great or awful, depending on how it’s used.

I’m neither a tech evangelist nor a Luddite. (Though I haven’t even touched on the potential implications of classroom teaching with artificial intelligence, a technology that, in other contexts, has so much destructive potential .) What I do want is the most effective educational experience for all kids.
