My top organization-related recommendation for students is to start by creating a readily-accessible folder on your computer where you can then create subfolders for your scholarship essays, transcripts, and other application materials. This is also the place where you’ll want to house your scholarship tracker , which will help you keep track of scholarships you find, upcoming deadlines, and your overall progress.

#2: Do your brainstorming.

You likely wouldn’t start an essay on the American Revolution without doing some initial brainstorming and planning first. The same rule should apply for when it’s time to search for scholarships.

Sit down with a pen and paper or a blank word document open, and start to bullet out a list of traits and things that you feel make up who you are as a person. These things should be both academic and personal. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, here’s a sneak peek into what my own personal list might look like:

-I am from New Jersey

-I am a business student with an interest in marketing

-I like to play sports (tennis, basketball, etc)

-I hold leadership positions in my extracurriculars

What I’m trying to get at though is that creating a list like this to track your hobbies, academic pursuits, and other things that make up who you are can be incredibly helpful in allowing you to find scholarships that are highly specific to you.

PS - For some students, this may also fall under the initial organization step of the process, but ultimately it doesn’t matter when you do it as long as it gets done.

#3: Know where to look.

Knowing what types of scholarships you want to search for doesn’t really matter if you don’t know where to actually search for them! Here are a few ideas on where you can get started in searching for scholarships:

- Scholarship search engines like AccessScholarships.com, which allow you to search through thousands of scholarship opportunities all in one place

- Normal search engines , such as Google (the more specific you can be here, the better)

-Your school’s college prep, guidance, or financial aid page/website

- Social media (you can follow scholarship accounts and hashtags that might be relevant to help you discover local scholarships)

- Family, friends, teachers, coaches, and other people in your community who might know of local or community-based scholarships that you’re eligible for

#4: If a scholarship has an essay or additional type of submission, make sure you put your absolute best foot forward.

This is, in my opinion, the biggest key to help students see success in actually winning scholarships.

You can have a 4.0 GPA and solid letters of recommendation, but if you don’t also take the time to carefully craft, edit, and perfect the essay (or other additional submission), you’re missing out on giving the scholarship committee the opportunity to learn more about who you are as a person and why you’re a great fit to win the award.

#5: Keep those grades up.

Although this eligibility requirement can definitely vary, many scholarships require students to have at least a 2.5 or 3.0 GPA. Sometimes, the minimum requirement can be even higher, such as a 3.75/4.0.

While grades certainly aren’t the end-all-be-all, keeping your GPA up (as high as you possibly can!) will make sure that you are opening yourself up to as many opportunities as possible.

#6: Apply often.

Unfortunately, applying for scholarships is not a “one and done” process. To give yourself the highest chance at seeing success, you should apply for scholarships as often as you can, or whenever you come across an opportunity that you think is worth applying for.

Many students find it helpful to set specific goals in this area, like to apply for 3 scholarships each month. Ultimately, the goal you set should be one that is specific and realistic, based on all of the other things that you’re juggling!

#7: Ask for feedback along the way.

If you don't ever take the time to assess your weak spots, how can you possibly improve?

Asking for feedback throughout the scholarship process, whether it be from a committee, a teacher, or someone who is helping you along the way, is crucial to helping you grow and becoming a stronger applicant. 

Getting feedback is especially important when it comes to the scholarship essay piece of the puzzle. When we write and edit, we tend to overlook our own mistakes because we're so used to making them. Sometimes it takes an extra set of eyes on an essay to help lead you in the direction of success.

Each year, 10-15 full tuition scholarships (not including room and board) are awarded to winning applicants who are passionate about helping their local communities and the world at large. In addition to the monetary reward, winners will be required to attend the Cameron Impact Scholars Award Ceremony for the four-year duration of the scholarship. The scholarship is provided by the Bryan Cameron Education Foundation, a “private family foundation established in 2015 on the principle of making a difference by investing in young people’s education.” If you’re a high school student with amazing achievements both inside and outside the classroom, we encourage you to apply to the Cameron Impact Scholarship! Please note that this scholarship has an early application deadline of May 17th and a final deadline of September 5th. Many scholarships feature long-winded essay questions, and it’s often hard to know where to start. And maybe you just aren’t an essay writer. That doesn’t mean you should lose out on great opportunities for college scholarships. With a little digging around online, you can find great no-essay scholarships that are not only easy to apply for but often fun to do too. These quick and easy contests will have bigger applicant pools and may be harder to win, but somebody has to—and you can’t win if you don’t apply!

Check out the ones below to start and continue to do your own research to find even more no-essay scholarships that could be hiding in all corners of the internet. Before applying to anything, make sure you read all the rules and policies for each scholarship using the links provided!

Register for a website

All of these scholarships just require you to register for a website, and most of them are popular college search sites, so you can get some extra college research done while you’re there.

Barbizon’s $100,000 College Tuition Scholarship

Barbizon Modeling and Acting awards $100,000 to one lucky winner to make their college dreams a reality. Applicants have a full two years to get entries every time the new scholarship cycle opens. The most recent cycle opened in January of 2023 and will be closing in December of 2024, with winners announced sometime the following year. All students have to do to enter is complete the application, and the winner will be chosen by random drawing.

The organization keepgoingforward.org offers three scholarships throughout the year with no set requirements for grade level or academic field. In fact, one of the scholarships doesn't even require applicants to be current students, as long as they are applying for the money with the intent to move forward with something new in life. And they partner with Bold.org—so if you already have an account, you're one step ahead on applying!

Use your words (but very few)

We said no essays; we never said no words. But have no fear, because these scholarships require very few words and quick answers to easy questions.

Doodle for Google

This is Google we’re talking about, so you know they’ve got big bucks. Not only is this an opportunity to win $55,000 for school, but the winning doodle will be featured on Google for a day and they will donate $50,000 to your school or a charity in your honor! And even if you don’t win the big money, you still have a chance at one of the $5,000 runner-up scholarships.

DoSomething doesn’t have just one easy scholarship—they have a ton! Most of them are creative and require you to make some sort of impact on others, whether big or small. Get your task, complete it, and send in a picture for proof for a chance to be their randomly chosen winner! Then rinse and repeat for their other tasks with coordinating scholarships.

Answer some questions

Sometimes websites just want people to fill out their surveys, and they’ll give you money for school just to do it. Or maybe the organization wants you to learn about something that they do. Either way, these scholarships just require answering a few questions to enter.

The $1,000 SuperCollege Scholarship

What’s easier than answering questions about yourself? Fill out an application and tell SuperCollege what you’re going to school for and other academic-related questions, hit submit, and you’re done.

Nitro Monthly Scholarship

Nitro is another college search website that gives away annual scholarships to students monthly. Just complete a short entry form with info including which college you’ll be attending and when you anticipate graduating. This application even allows parents to enter for their children. As long as you're 17 years old, you should apply to this one now!

Student-View Scholarship

This one skips the application process and gets right to the questions. Fill out their survey to get entered into their random drawing. The big winner gets $10,000, and if that’s not you, you could still be one of two $1,000 winners or one of five $500 winners.

National YoungArts Foundation

Achieve Today Scholarship Fund

Overview: L. Against the Grain Artistic Scholarship

Overview: The Against The Grain Artistic Scholarship provides financial assistance and promotion of Asian American college students pursuing a major in the performing, visual arts, journalism and/or mass communications. To be eligible, applicant must be of at least 25% Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity, must be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S. and must be either a high school senior or a college student currently enrolled fulltime at an accredited U.S. vocational, junior college, or four-year college/university and must be a full- time, associate/bachelor/master degree seeking student by the upcoming academic calendar year and pursuing a major in the visual/performing arts (film, theatre, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.).

IFDA Student Member Scholarship

Overview: The IFDA Student Member Scholarship is available through the IFDA Educational Foundation to a full-time, current student member of IFDA who has completed a minimum of four design courses in a post secondary interior design or related program. The IFDA student identification number must be included on the application form.

Ruth Clark Furniture Design Scholarship

Award: $3,000

Overview: The Ruth Clark Furniture Design Scholarship was established by the Carolinas Chapter to honor Ruth Clark, one of the chapter’s founding members. Ruth Clark, an IFDA Fellow, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. During her career, she designed upholstered furniture for several companies, and many of her designs have become classics in the industry. She mentored design students and young professionals in the field, served as Carolinas Chapter President and received the prestigious IFDA National Honorary Recognition Award in 1994. Currently she is a design consultant and furniture designer for The Clark Connection. The scholarship is open to currently enrolled post-secondary students whose emphasis is on residential furniture design.

Tricia LeVangie Green/Sustainable Design Scholarship

Overview: The Tricia LeVangie Green/Sustainable Design Scholarship was established by the New England Chapter to honor the late Tricia LeVangie, an active and committed IFDA New England member. The scholarship is for an undergraduate student focusing on the evolving green/sustainable field of study. Sustainable design is the development of innovative ways to create living spaces that are energy efficient and feature green/sustainable materials, fabrications and products. The student applying for this scholarship is planning to become an educated participant in the green movement. Paying equal attention to both sustainability factors and design aesthetics, the student should be demonstrating creative use of green products and eco-friendly furnishings in class projects. The student is familiar with current information in the green/sustainable field, is applying this knowledge in class work and has a goal of seeking a future LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation. The recipient of this scholarship must be enrolled for the fall semester following the March 31st application deadline, in order to receive this scholarship.

Two Ten Higher Education Footwear Design Scholarships

Overview: Two Ten provides scholarship opportunities to any student who is studying design with a focus on footwear. Applicants are evaluated by financial need and design potential. Unlike our traditional college scholarships, the Footwear Design Scholarship is available to any student who is studying design with a focus on footwear. This program was created in 2003 to assist students with a demonstrated interest and skill in pursuing a career in footwear design. Applicants are evaluated by design potential and financial need. Awards of up to $3,000 annually are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.

ASID Legacy Scholarship for Undergraduates

Award: $4,000

Overview: The ASID Legacy Scholarship is open to all students in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study enrolled in at least a three-year accredited program of interior design. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic accomplishment, creative achievement, and personal statement. The jury will evaluate entries on academic record, presentation skills, design and planning competency, and conceptual creativity. Applicants must submit a design portfolio featuring 8-12 pages of work which demonstrates design solutions that positively impact occupant’s well-being.

Irene Winifred Eno Grant

Overview: The Irene Winifred Eno Grant provides financial assistance to individuals or groups developing an educational program(s) or project that is dedicated to health, safety, and welfare. This grant will be evaluated on the strength of the project proposal, budget, promotion plan, and expected outcome. Overview:  In 2008, OAR introduced the Schwallie Family Scholarship to support the post-secondary, undergraduate education of qualified individuals with an autism spectrum diagnosis. Wharton Dean Says Philanthropic Support For The B-School Has Fallen

Wharton School Dean Erika James says new donor contributions to the school has declined due to tension over antisemitism and freedom of speech on campus.

Despite the decrease, James told the Financial Times in an interview  that the shortfall has been balanced by increased tuition revenue and income from other school activities. Wharton boasts the highest annual tuition for its MBA program in the world, with 2024-2025 tuition and fees coming to $89,500, some $10,000 more than the annual MBA tuition at Harvard Business School. The total annual estimated cost of a Wharton MBA, including room and board, is now $127,514 (see What It Costs To Get An MBA From A Top School ).

Ahead of the university’s financial year which ends June, she acknowledged a dip in donations but remained optimistic about philanthropy’s recovery, emphasizing that Wharton has “weathered the storm.” James did not reveal the size of the drop in donor funding. Unlike Harvard Business School , which is far more transparent with its financials, Wharton does not publicly disclose its annual budget nor other financial data.

DEAN REACHING OUT TO ALUMS FOR MORE SUPPORT

The difference in costs is even greater than the price tags suggest because Wharton isn’t nearly as generous as Harvard in awarding fellowships to bring the actual cost of its MBA down. In fiscal 2023, 47% of Harvard’s MBA students received a need-based scholarship from the school with awards ranging from $2,500 to $76,000 per year. The average annual award was nearly $45,000. HBS began providing scholarships to cover the total cost of tuition and course fees for roughly 10% of students with the greatest financial need last year.

In response to the funding challenge at Wharton, James has initiated a new series of dialogues with donors to reinforce Wharton’s dedication to “creating knowledge useful to society” and has increased the focus on courses dealing with conflict management, productive engagement, and civil discourse.The backdrop to these developments includes a broader controversy involving the University of Pennsylvania.

The university faced criticism and concerns from donors about antisemitism on campus, particularly in relation to a Palestinian literature festival. This has led to threats from some of Wharton’s alumni, who have significant influence in finance and investment sectors, to retract funding. Critics, including Wharton Board of Advisors Chair Marc Rowan of Apollo Global Management and other prominent businessmen and politicians, have been vocal in their opposition.

A 1985 Wharton MBA graduate, Rowan believed that University President Liz Magill failed to fully condemn the beliefs of some speakers at a Palestine Writes Literature Festival who called for the elimination of Israel. Little more than a day after Wharton’s Board of Advisors demanded the resignation of Magill in December, she tossed in the towel and gave up her job.

Rowan has been especially vocal, publicly urging donors to “close their checkbooks” to withhold donations to the university. “It is time for the trustees to begin moving UPenn in a new direction,” Rowan wrote. “Join me and many others who love UPenn by sending UPenn $1 in place of your normal, discretionary contribution so that no one misses the point.”

James noted that existing donors with prior commitments to Wharton have continued their support. The situation reflects broader dynamics affecting academic institutions and their relationships with donors, amidst evolving debates over freedom of speech and the responsibility of universities to maintain inclusive and respectful campuses.

Scarboro students can apply for college scholarships

High school graduates from the Scarboro community in Oak Ridge can begin applying for college scholarships given by the Scarboro Community Alumni Association.

The application packet will be made available at area high schools, community organizations and churches, according to a news release from the SCAA. 

Applicants must submit the form and essay no later than May 10, 2024.

Prerequisites for applying:

• Must have an association with the Scarboro Community.
• Must have attended Oak Ridge High School or surrounding area high school.
• Must be enrolled in a two or four year undergraduate program (show proof such as class schedule and letter of acceptance).
• Must have high school transcript.
• Must have two references, one a teacher and another community leader.
• Must submit a 400-word typed essay entitled ‘Why We Should Honor the Oak Ridge Scarboro 85.” View the WBIR series “The Secret in Scarboro, Oak Ridge, Tennessee" on YouTube. Review reference material at Oak Ridge Public Library or interview Oak Ridge-Scarboro 85 students.

A Hippocratic oath for teachers

As USC Rossier prepares to celebrate the Class of 2024, professor Nooshan Ashtari shares words of wisdom with future educators. 

During the last class of each semester, after my students wrap up their coursework and we look back on our time together throughout the term, I cannot help but be in awe of all that my wonderful students have accomplished. I also cannot help but wonder what their futures may hold for them. Some might end up teaching for decades, some might teach for a few years or even months, and then switch to other careers as the human-made world keeps on putting immense amounts of pressure on some of the most essential treasures: teachers and the art of teaching and learning. 

As I take one of the last looks at my students before we end the term, I take a deep breath and try to imagine all of their professional futures to be fulfilling and fruitful. I have taught internationally for over 22 years, the last 14 years of which in higher education and teacher training. My career as an educator and researcher has been full of ups and downs, tears and laughter, and I hope my students’ careers will be more upward thrills than downward horrors. 

Over the years, I have seen family members and friends take the Hippocratic oath at their graduation ceremonies in countries around the world, and I have always appreciated it deeply. Inspired by Hippocrates and his writings, the Hippocratic oath is an oath of ethics new physicians take. It requires physicians to swear to uphold ethical standards in the highest regard while treating patients throughout their careers. After searching for something to mark each course’s end and acknowledge the future journey teachers are about to embark on, I developed “The Hippocratic oath for current and future teachers.” 

Before I say goodbye to my students, I share this oath, which I have adapted from various versions of the modern Hippocratic oath:

After the students and I finish looking over the lines, we sometimes reflect on what our paths have been like up to this point and the possibilities for our futures. We share contact information that is not solely connected with one university or institution to make sure we stay in touch, even when life might take us in different directions. As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote in The Little Prince in a conversation between a young, wandering prince from a small asteroid called B-612 and a flower with three petals that the prince meets in a desert, humans are always in transition, “But you never know where to find them. The wind blows them away. They have no roots, which hampers them a good deal.” 

Sometimes, I hear back from some of my students years or even decades later; sometimes I don’t hear from them at all, but one thing that remains the same for all of us is our belief that teaching is truly a work of heart and learning is an inseparable part of the human experience. May the path of teaching be remarkable for all of our current and future teachers, and may the path of learning be limitless for all of us residents of planet Earth and beyond.

Review: Conan Gray’s ‘Found Heaven’ presents harmonious fusion of nostalgia and emotion

Gray released his third studio album, which captures the lasting impact of past relationships..

On April 5, Conan Gray unveiled his third studio album, “Found Heaven.” Co-produced by Max Martin (Taylor Swift’s “1989”), Greg Kurstin (Adele’s “25”) and Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes’ “Sound & Color”), the album contains 13 reminiscent and multifaceted tracks. Gray has been a prominent figure in the music industry since his breakthrough in 2017, when he released his debut single “Idle Town” — which received millions of views on YouTube within months of its release. Since then, Gray has captivated audiences worldwide with his candid and introspective songwriting, which captures the nuances of young adulthood with a rare sincerity. As Gray continues to carve his path in the music world, “Found Heaven” serves as a testament to his growth and artistic prowess.

Gray rose to fame for his stripped-down, indie-pop style. His third album, however, deviates from that established sound. Filled with echoing percussion, bursts of energy and bright synths, the album opens with a choir singing.

In interviews for magazines such as New Musical Express and Rolling Stone, Gray expressed surprise at reaching his third album, a “milestone” that he had not expected to reach when he was writing his first album. While he said he views his first two albums, “Kid Krow” and “Superache,” as similar in style, he wanted “Found Heaven” to stray from that pattern entirely. 

“My first two albums, I think [of] as siblings,” Gray said. “They very much are the natural repetition of each other. But [with] this album, I just wanted to do the last thing that I would have thought I would do.”

Gray added that the album was crafted with a heightened emotional intensity, evident in the track list’s dramatic composition and delivery. In the midst of his first breakup and its ensuing whirlwind of emotions, Gray said he underwent a significant emotional transformation while creating the album. He said he experienced a distinct emotional state during the creation period, prompting him to seek a title that encapsulates the unique blend of feelings he was experiencing.

“It was about my first time falling in love but also my first breakup and about all these crazy emotions all around it,” he said in NME. “I felt really different when I was making the album, so I wanted a title that encapsulated a little bit of death.”

Gray merges eras to express his message. The artist grew up listening to music from the 1980s, such as A-Ha, Cutting Crew and David Bowie, while also experiencing various aspects of the digital-native cohort — from his career beginnings as a YouTube vlogger to the distinctly modern brand of whisperpop that characterized his first two records. Throughout his career, he has consistently empathized with his peers by exploring dramatic themes of unrequited love and adolescent struggles, capturing the essence of life for young people in the 21st century. Gray’s fusion of influences from previous generations yields a unique expression of contemporary adolescence.

Real highs emerge through Gray’s interpretation of the decade. “Alley Rose,” a theatrical heartache ballad, is the record’s clear standout: rich in melodramatic strings, it sees Gray wandering the London streets where he got broken up with — a crucial detail, given the British accent he occasionally adopts throughout the song. Examples of maximalist pop perfection like “Never Ending Song” and “Fainted Love” are only enhanced by Gray’s modern outlook. In songs like “Forever with Me” and “The Eye of the Night,” Gray beautifully articulates the sorrow of losing a love dear to him. Despite the ache of separation conveyed through his heartfelt lyrics and emotive melodies, there’s an acknowledgment that the memories he once shared with his lover will forever hold a place in his heart. These tracks serve as reminders of the enduring impact of past relationships, encapsulating both the pain of loss and the solace found in cherished memories. The one change in tone is “Bourgeoisieses,” in which Gray takes a break from dwelling on heartache to poke fun at a rich upper class, painting himself as a “low-class guy” with a Gatsby-esque urge to party among them.

In the album’s music videos, Gray also incorporates choreographed routines inspired by the vibrant styles of the 1980s — an element that distinguishes this album from Gray’s previous endeavors. Gray said delving into dance on a serious level was a novel experience for him. While the choreography for “Never Ending Song” was outsourced from choreographer Max Pham — a standout from the inaugural season of “Dance 100” —  Gray took a hands-on approach to other songs, collaborating with Pham to craft the movements for “Lonely Dancers.” Gray’s choreographic endeavors exude a sense of authenticity; his dances successfully capture the intimate essence of dancing alone in your bedroom, which reflects the lyrics in his album.

Amid popular music that can often feel like it comes from a distant reality, Gray evokes an intimate and everyday atmosphere. In the music video for “Never Ending Song,” the artist draws inspiration from a trip he took to Tesco, a grocery store he describes as a “magical place,” with a former lover. The ambiance of a grocery store, a commonplace and almost mundane setting, becomes the perfect backdrop to explore the moments shared between the former flames. Gray’s choice lends the video an air of authenticity and closeness, as Gray invites us to witness the complexities of human relationships in an environment as simple as a market.

Through his new album, Gray invites us to join him in his simultaneous ode to the past and embrace of new experiences. Gray’s appreciation for the music of his youth is evident throughout the album. In an interview with NME, Gray said if his listeners take one thing away from “Found Heaven,” he hopes it is the realization that there is no rush to discover and define oneself. It’s okay not to have all the answers and to embrace the multifaceted nature of identity. “Found Heaven” encourages us to celebrate our complexity, reminding us that we don’t have to conform to societal expectations of knowing exactly who we are. Rather, we can be many things at once — a sentiment that resonates deeply in today’s label-focused world.

Do a google search for the 1960s group The Beatles, and you will get back about 285 million results.  A google search for Bob Dylan will return 89 million results. A google search for Taylor Swift will return 1.2 billion results. Her 2023 The Eras Tour became the first tour in history to surpass $1 billion in revenue, making it the highest-grossing tour of all time.

Obviously, Taylor Swift has made an impact on American culture.  This course will examine what is behind her rise in popularity, and how her lyrics may serve as a mirror for many Americans’ worldview.  Apart from analyzing her lyrics, life, and popularity, we will go on a writing journey of our own. First, learning how to write concisely and effectively, and then working on our own songs.

A course that includes some writing may not sound interesting. It may (wrongly) take us back to the drudgery of learning grammar. For this reason, we will read engaging material that will make us want to keep reading. The course intends to inspire you to develop your innate abilities and your learned skills.

Course Success

This course is rather straight forward–it is about participation, reading carefully, and growth as a writer.  The grade breakdown is as follows:

Album: 5% Essays: 10% Quizzes: 85%

The grading rubric for grading your written assignments will be based as follows:  95% on style/punctuation/grammar and 5% on content.  We will use  The Elements of Style  and  The Chicago Manual of Style  as the measure for style/punctuation/grammar.

The quizzes are multiple choice questions that will be on Canvas.

All assignments and quizzes must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on the day that they are due. If you do not turn in an assignment or take a quiz, you will lose points for that assignment, plus you will lose 30 points on each assignment or quiz that you do not complete.

Any academic dishonesty/cheating–be it related to our quizzes or plagiarism (including the use of AI)–will result in an F for the course, and probable dismissal from the Honors College, and will also be put in your student record.

The Art Students League of New York is now accepting applications for its 2024 scholarships. 

For over a century, the League has helped emerging artists to gain access to a high-quality education. The scholarships and grants have covered the cost of tuition and provided funds to supplement the education of thousands of League students. The goal of the League’s scholarships and grants are to provide new and greater opportunities to artists who need them. Past recipients of League scholarships include  Norman Rockwell ,  James Rosenquist ,   and  Tshabalala Self , among others. 

The League’s scholarships are open to current and incoming students. A full listing of requirements can be found on the League’s  website .

April is Financial Capability Month

Information sessions, conversations, scholarship and gift card prizes, and even free rides to classes fill the schedule as Washington State University celebrates Financial Capability Month throughout April.

Organized annually by the Office of Academic Engagement (OAE) and formerly known as Financial Literacy Month, the series of events is designed to help students, faculty, and staff manage their finances more effectively and even have fun in the process, said Maja Gillespie. She is OAE’s director of College Affordability Programs (CAP), which includes Cougar Money Matters. Some events will be in person at WSU Pullman and others are virtual to also serve participants at other campuses.

“We’re offering something for everyone to help, for example, build foundational knowledge of finances, and describe what resources are available and what knowledgeable experts can explain,” said Gillespie. “It’s critical, no matter where you are in life at this moment, to gather informational tools to make sound financial decisions that can lead to a successful relationship with money.”

Throughout April, Gillespie said, there will be events and workshops featuring experts from OAE as well as BECU, Student Financial Services, the Writing Center, Global Campus, and the region.

On Thursday, April 4, there will be free rides to WSU Pullman classes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. aboard a festive golf cart. The only charge will be to answer some financial trivia questions while enjoying the ride, which will make students eligible for prizes.

“It’s much like the TV game show ‘Cash Cab’, but no one will be kicked off for a wrong answer,” Gillespie said. “We call it ‘Financial Education on the Move’ and we did a similar activity in November and about 20 students got rides up and down WSU hills. We’re hoping for more riders this year.”

Additional Financial Capability Month activities include: 

• April 9, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. CUB Junior Ballroom, WSU Pullman: “Financial Wellness Fair 2024,” featuring experts to answer questions. For each table visited, guests will punch their card aiming for raffle prizes that include a scholarship from OAE, an Amazon gift card from BECU, and more. Pizza will be served.
• April 11, 5–6 p.m., via Zoom : “Student Loans and Repayment Simplified,” presented by Jordan Creighton, Global Campus financial aid advisor. Creighton’s presentation will help explain the ins and outs of federal student loans and the repayment process.
• April 15, 3–5 p.m. Stimson Hall Common Room, WSU Pullman: “Scholarship Workshop,” presented by CAP, Student Financial Services, and the WSU Writing Program’s Writing Center. Help to elevate scholarship essays into winning applications.
• April 18, 5–6 p.m., via Zoom : “Financial Reality Fair,” presented by BECU representatives. An interactive simulation will give a glimpse into real-world financial planning, savings, and budgeting skills, and show the impact of poor credit on finances.
• April 25, 5–6 p.m. The Commons, room 210, WSU Pullman: “Finding and Funding Your Why,” presented by Karen Richel, University of Idaho extension educator. Play with “what-if’s” in this interactive workshop to learn about reaching financial goals, spending and saving as a fun game, and considerations for future planning.
