Which Gatwick terminal does easyJet fly from?

You've booked your tickets, packed your suitcase and you're heading out the door with sun, sea and something refreshing on your mind. But which terminal are you going to? We have the answer

It’s a question we all ask, the answer to which has the chance of seriously upending a holiday if you don’t get it right. It is, of course: which airport terminal is my easyJet  flight leaving from?  None more so than for the key London (actually, it’s in Sussex, but be that as it may) hub of Gatwick airport .

Which terminal should I head to?

From March 2022, easyJet is actually flying from/to both the North and South terminals at Gatwick. It’s easy to work out which you need to go to, though:

• If your flight number is between 6400 and 6599 (inclusive), then it’s the South terminal for you.
• Literally any other number? Head to the North terminal. 

Don’t worry if the prospect of looking at flight numbers is filling you with anxiety, though. The terminal you’ll need to travel to is also made clear on your booking confirmation. It’s important you get it right as it could affect where you might want to park (if you’re driving to the airport) or get a hotel (if you’re sleeping nearby the night before).

And how do I get there?

When travelling in by train (either on the Gatwick Express  or via ‘regular’ Southern , ThamesLink  or Great Western routes), keep in mind that the airport station is in the South terminal. That’s not a problem for getting to the North terminal, though, as there’s a free shuttle that’ll whizz you straight there.

There are two terminals to choose from.

• London Gatwick Airport has two terminals - North and South, with different airlines operating at each terminal.
• The North Terminal at Gatwick handles long-haul flights, including carriers like Air China, Emirates, and Qatar Airways.
• The South Terminal is home to more airlines and sees higher traffic, with carriers like British Airways, Ryanair, and Wizz Air operating from there.

London Gatwick (LGW) is the second-busiest airport serving the United Kingdom's capital city, as well as the busiest single-runway airport in Europe . Situated to the south of London, around halfway to the coast, the facility has two terminals, referred to as simply North and South, with many airlines serving each of them. But, with passengers wanting to avoid using the wrong one, who goes where?

North Terminal

Generally speaking, Gatwick 's North Terminal is home to some of the airport's key long-haul operations. For example, this part of the airport handles intercontinental flights operated by the likes of Air China, Air Mauritius, Air Transat, China Eastern Airlines, Emirates, Ethiopian, JetBlue, Qatar Airways, Saudia, and WestJet.

Closer to home, the North Terminal also accommodates carriers such as Turkish charter operator Freebird Airlines, as well as European flag carriers such as Lufthansa and Icelandair. North Africa also sees representation, with Royal Air Maroc using this terminal. For other operators, it is more complicated.

Indeed, this is because, in the case of UK carriers easyJet and TUI, which are some of London Gatwick Airport's largest operators, different flights depart from different terminals. For TUI, Gatwick advises that flight numbers beginning with 'TOM' use the North Terminal, whereas 'BY' indicates a South Terminal departure. As for easyJet, passengers are advised to check with the airline to confirm their terminal.

Elsewhere in the North Terminal, a notable recent arrival was Delta Air Lines. Indeed, the Atlanta-headquartered US legacy carrier and SkyTeam member returned to London Gatwick in April 2023 after an operational hiatus that lasted more than a decade. However, its presence was short-lived, with Delta announcing in August that the newly reinstated route from New York JFK would pause in late October.

South Terminal

London Gatwick Airport's South Terminal was the first of the current pair to open its doors , doing so in June 1958. It also lies in the closest proximity to the airport's mainline railway station. Despite this, the impacts of the pandemic forced it to close in June 2022, and it only reopened once again in March 2022 . It has 31 stands and another 57 remote ones, as is also the case for the North Terminal.

This part of the airport sees considerably more traffic, and is home to big hitters such as Aer Lingus, airBaltic, British Airways, Jet2, Norwegian, Ryanair, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Vueling Airlines, and Wizz Air. Long-haul carriers include Vietnam's Bamboo Airways, Norse Atlantic Airways, and Air India. Among the charter operators present here are Titan Airways and Enter Air.

On a more regional level, Aurigny links London Gatwick to the Channel Island of Guernsey (GCI) from the airport's South Terminal, while Eastern Airways flies directly to Cornwall Airport Newquay (NQY). The 'best of the rest' for the South Terminal include the likes of Aegean Airlines, Air Europa, Air Malta, Corendon Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Iberia Express, SmartWings, and SunExpress.

How to get between the two terminals

For passengers needing to connect between the two terminals at London Gatwick Airport, there is a quick and easy (and, crucially, free) solution. Indeed, the airport provides an automated people mover known as the Gatwick Airport Shuttle Transit. Next year will see more carriers get in on the act at London Gatwick Airport, with the likes of Atlantic Airways and Azores Airlines joining the party in June 2024. Everything you need to know about flying EasyJet

Traveling on a l ow-cost carrier probably isn't your favorite way to cruise the skies, but if you play your cards right, your experience doesn't have to be all that bad. After all, the allure of scoring that super-cheap fare may outweigh the negatives -- like being nickel-and-dimed for all the extras.

To help those of you who are considering purchasing a fare on low-cost carrier EasyJet (or are wondering if you should), TPG is here to tell you exactly what you need to know about flying the airline so you can have a pleasant travel experience. Check in beforehand or at the airport

EasyJet is one of the few low-cost carriers that won't charge you to check in or print your boarding pass at the airport. But if you aren't checking a bag, you can save time by checking in ahead of time and getting a mobile boarding pass. To check in online, go to the EasyJet website under "Manage Bookings" or use the free app using your booking reference. You'll be prompted to enter your surname and booking reference, then, follow the instructions to download or send the mobile boarding pass to your phone.

Web check-in is available between 30 days and two hours before the flight, giving you plenty of time to get your boarding pass printed or downloaded before you take off. Be prepared to enter advanced passenger information during check-in, which can include details like nationality, passport number, birth date and more. And remember, if you change your booking in any way (select new seats, change the date, name, add an infant or special assistance), you'll have to reprint your boarding pass or download it again.

It's actually okay if you spell your name wrong

If you notice you made a typo when entering your name, you can change it for free. However, if you want to give your ticket to another person entirely, you'll have to pay a fee of $34 to change it online if it's 60 days or more before travel. If it's 60 days or less before departure, the fee is $69. These changes (and any others) to your booking can be made in the Manage Booking section on the EasyJet app or webpage.

Take advantage of EasyJet's impressive app

In 2019, EasyJet's app launched an interesting function: voice flight bookings . You can speak your departure city, destination and travel dates into your mobile's microphone and voilà -- the app will pull up available flights.

This new feature is in addition to the app's Book with Instagram feature that's already available. Using it, you can upload a screenshot of a destination you'd like to visit that you've snapped from social media. If EasyJet flies there (or close by), it will find the location and show you flight options.

You don't need a stamp

Unlike low-cost carrier Ryanair, which mandates non-EU/EEA passengers must have their travel documents checked and stamped at the Ryanair Visa/Document Check Desk before certain flights, EasyJet has no such rule.

If you have your boarding pass and you're not checking a bag, the airline recommends you arrive 60 minutes before your scheduled departure and proceed directly to security. If you need to check a bag, it's best to arrive a minimum of 90 minutes ahead of your scheduled flight to most destinations; however, this may be different when flying to or from spots like Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Serbia.

So, make sure to check the EasyJet website ahead of time when traveling between those countries. Also, note that bag drop closes 40 minutes before the departure time for most flights (60 minutes if departing from the aforementioned countries). And because many airports have self bag drops, be prepared to tag your bag yourself in some cases.

Know the carry-on luggage rules

All passengers can bring one bag on board with a maximum size of 22x18x10 inches including handles and wheels. There is no weight limit, but you must be able to lift your bag into the overhead bin.

Travelers who have purchased an extra-legroom/up front seat, FLEXI fare or hold an EasyJet Plus card can bring an added personal item to place under the seat with a maximum size of 18x14x8 inches.

In some cases, the airline staff may be lax to enforce this one-bag-only rule if you are flying with one bag and one small personal item, like a purse. In other cases, the staff at the gate may strongly enforce the rule. So, if you decide to push the limit and travel with an additional personal item that's not included in your fare, be prepared to put the smaller item inside your carry-on bag if asked, in order to avoid paying extra fees.

According to EasyJet, there is only room for 70 cabin bags in the airplanes' overhead lockers. All remaining cabin bags will be checked and can be collected from the baggage carousel on arrival. So, if you want to be certain your baggage travels with you in the cabin, pack a backpack that can fit under the seat or purchase speedy boarding to be one of the first passengers on the plane.

Know the checked luggage rules

Each traveler can bring three checked bags weighing under either 33 pounds, 51 pounds or 71 pounds. Checked baggage fees are dependent on route, flight and time of booking. If purchased online, prices range from $10 to $48 for bags weighing up to 33 pounds and from $21 - $52 for those weighing more than 33 pounds up to 51 pounds. An extra $17 for every 7 pounds of weight is added for bags weighing more than 51 pounds on up to 71 pounds.

Passengers can only pay to check the lower-priced 33-pound or less bag online. If you wait to pay for your bag at the airport, you'll be charged $55 at the bag-drop desk or $69 at the boarding gate for a bag up to 51 pounds. Additional weight can only be purchased online in increments of 7 pounds, either at initial booking or post-booking. If your bag weighs more than the amount you pre-purchased, expect to pay an extra $12 per pound above the pre-booked weight.

A final option is to take advantage of EasyJet's Hands Free option. This means that you check your carry-on bag at the bag drop, allowing you to navigate the airport and security checks efficiently without dragging a bag with you. The bags also reportedly arrive first off the baggage carousel. This service costs $10 per person, or $22 for a family or group of three to six passengers.

Here are TPG tips for checked baggage:

• Always weigh your bag before traveling.
• Pack a small travel scale to weigh it again before returning home.
• Book and pay for your checked luggage online to avoid extra charges for doing so at the airport.
• Ensure your checked baggage doesn't exceed the maximum size. The length + width + height must total under 108in.

Pay for your extras in advance

It's clear from reading the baggage rules that purchasing in advance will save you money. You should consider purchasing your seats and other extras in advance too, not only to save money but to avoid hassle and disappointment later on. Each aircraft has up-front seats, extra legroom seats and regular seats. Prices for seat selection range from $3- $11 for standard seats to $11 - $41 for front, extra legroom or overwing seats. FLEXI fares or EasyJet Plus have seat selection included.

If you choose not to pay extra for seats and are traveling with a group, be sure to check in as early as possible (remember, you can do so 30 days in advance) for the best chance of being seated together. Unfortunately, speedy boarding isn't available as a standalone purchase, but it's available to travelers with an EasyJet Plus card, FLEXI ticket or an up-front or extra-legroom seat.

Consider a FLEXI fare or EasyJet Plus

FLEXI fares allow changes to flight dates and times, plus a free 51-pound checked bag, dedicated bag drop, speedy boarding, Fast Track security at selected airports, a seat at the front of the airplane, an under-seat bag in addition to your cabin bag and a $10 (or currency equivalent) bistro voucher to spend onboard.

EasyJet Plus membership costs $275 per year and includes allocated seating every time you fly, dedicated bag-drop desks, Fast Track security at select airports, speedy boarding, an additional cabin bag and more. This option may be worth it if you fly EasyJet several times per year.

EasyJet partners with other airlines to fly you, well, everywhere

EasyJet flies to over 150 destinations across Europe and North Africa. They also partner with airlines like Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Norwegian, Singapore, Virgin and several others to help serve destinations the airline doesn't fly to itself, like spots in North America, the Caribbean, Asia and beyond. Milan Malpensa Airport Reopens Exclusive EasyJet Terminal

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) has reopened its Terminal 2—to be used exclusively by LCC easyJet—after a three-year closure.

MXP operator Società Esercizi Aeroportuali (SEA) says 20,000 easyJet passengers used the terminal on May 31, its first day in service since closing in June 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

EasyJet, which has an all-Airbus A320-family fleet, says 23 aircraft will be based at MXP this summer, serving more than 60 destinations. The airline considers MXP its “main base in continental Europe.”

SEA says in a statement that Terminal 2 has been upgraded during its closure. For example, it will feature 21 baggage self-drop machines, enabling passengers to check baggage on their own. 

“The security check area has been renovated throughout, with a new, more functional layout that offers passengers nine new, automated, latest-generation lines that will reduce checking and waiting times,” SEA adds.

The operator notes the terminal has been equipped with explosive-detection technology “that will enable checks to be carried out without removing electronic devices and liquids from hand luggage, further improving the travel experience.”

The terminal also has a new 1,500 m 2 (16,145 ft 2 ) duty-free area and expanded dining options. MXP has additionally installed “new and more efficient mobile walkways, escalators and lifts at different points of the airport.” 

SEA adds: “A number of areas, such as the arrivals corridor, have been renovated, with particular attention paid to improving thermal insulation and energy performance. The new, latest-generation air conditioning system will allow for a 15% reduction in the energy used for air conditioning, and a reduction of approximately 8% in [carbon dioxide] emissions.”

EasyJet says it expects Terminal 2 to handle 5 million passengers over the summer. 

Lorenzo Lagorio, country manager of easyJet Italia, notes the UK-based carrier has been serving Milan for 25 years.

“From May 1998 to the present, we’ve flown 90 million passengers to and from this airport, confirming the airline’s ongoing commitment to Italy and to the Lombardy region in particular,” he says, adding that easyJet this summer will operate “unprecedented ... seats available and destinations served” from MXP, “thanks to a terminal in line with our requirements.”

SEA CEO Armando Brunini says the terminal’s reopening “is a further confirmation ... that the pandemic is officially over.” He adds Terminal 2 is “now more comfortable, efficient and sustainable thanks to all our investments we made in order to improve the quality of passengers’ experience.”

BA, easyJet and Wizz Air resume flights to and from Israel

Virgin Atlantic to restart services in September, almost a year after airlines suspended flights owing to Gaza war

Major European airlines have started to resume flights to and from Israel. Wizz Air, easyJet and British Airways are now all flying to Tel Aviv, and Virgin Atlantic is planning a resumption this year.

Wizz Air said on Wednesday it had restarted flights to Israel from six airports in March, and planned to resume operations on further routes during the next three months. This will include the resumption of flights from Gatwick to Tel Aviv, as well as 16 other paused routes.

Most big airlines suspended services to Israel and some surrounding areas after the start of the war in Gaza in October. They are only now returning.

BA resumed flights to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport on Monday, but with a reduced service of one daily plane four days a week. EasyJet restarted its services to Israel on 25 March,returning to its prewar schedule from London Luton, Amsterdam, Berlin, Basel, Geneva and Milan.

In January, easyJet revealed that the Middle East crisis had cost it more than £40m in lost trading as flights were suspended and demand weakened.

Ryanair has also been significantly affected by the war, and revealed on Wednesday that it had been forced to cancel 950 flights since October. The airline resumed flights to Ben Gurion at the start of February but suspended them again at the end of the month after a dispute over which terminal it could use.

Ryanair complained that the airport had closed its low-cost terminal 1, which meant the airline was being forced to use terminal 3, where the fees are higher.

Virgin Atlantic has said it plans to resume flights to Israel in September after initially earmarking March for a restart. The airline said: “After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to extend our pause on flying to and from Tel Aviv up to and including 4 September 2024.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused and our teams will be in contact with anyone affected to discuss their options, which include rebooking to a later date or a full refund.”

Virgin Atlantic posted annual accounts on Wednesday that showed a loss of £139m for the year to 31 December, an improvement on the £206m loss it made in 2022. It said continued cost discipline and cash protection meant that it expected to return to profitability next year.

Oliver Byers, Virgin Atlantic’s chief financial officer, said the continued losses were largely due to interest charges incurred on loans taken on during the pandemic, as well as £100m of debt repaid to lenders in 2023.

AUKUS weighs expanding security pact to deter China, FT says
