I think this would work for my ninth grade! She is very anxious to take her ACT, and this would be great practice. She has only taken a few standardized tests in her life, and isn't a great test taker, although she is very smart. This would be very helpful for her.

That is one thing my oldest said after he graduated - that he wished I had made him take more standardized tests because he had so much anxiety over taking the ACT. He was so stressed about taking the test that I just had him take the college placement tests and he did just fine.

IEW High School Essay Intensive Review

Our family was first introduced to IEW when my oldest daughter took a co-op class using the Student Writing Intensive. Since then, we have used the Student Writing Intensive   at home, as well as   U.S. History Based Writing Lessons (we are currently using this), and All Things Fun and Fascinating . Since we have used and enjoyed these materials, my 11th grade daughter was really excited to hear about the High School Essay Intensive. And that shows you just what an impact IEW and Andrew Pudewa have made on her .

IEW High School Essay Intensive Review

“I grew up in mortal fear of the dangling participle.” -Andrew Pudewa

Excellent writing is so important for everyone. The ability to communicate powerfully with the written word can give any person a distinct advantage in almost every area of life, and give them the ability to have a huge impact on the world.

I think the number one attraction to the IEW materials is Andrew Pudewa, the founder of the company as well as the presenter of the DVD classes. He is so personable and fun. My kids enjoy watching the videos, and even the younger kids (who are not taking the course) will sit down and watch. Bonus!

The selling point for parents: the incredible results in their child’s writing. I have seen it in my three oldest kids. The IEW methods are so amazing. I definitely plan to continue using many IEW resources for my youngest two children.

High School Essay Intensive – What is it?

“ This DVD course with accompanying handouts provides immediate experience and inside tips toward high school essay writing, including text analysis, response-to-literature prompts, and the college application personal essay, with content updated in 2016 for SAT®, ACT®, and techniques for writing a college application .”

The program consists of

  • 5 DVDs containing 6.5 hours of class instruction
  • Student Handouts – 25 pages for assignment and note-taking
  • Portable Walls for the Essayist

A sample download of the Student Handouts is available HERE . You may purchase additional copies for your extra students HERE   (comes with the Portable Walls for the Essayist, too).

IEW Highs School Essay Intensive Review

Portable Walls for the Essayist is basically a durable tri-fold that contains handy checklists of all of the important lists and techniques discussed (and used) in the class. This is also available for separate purchase if you need extra copies.

How We Use It

This is such a flexible program. You could use the entire program to prepare for writing essays in general with a focus on ACT and SAT essay preparation. Or you can just use the general essay portion, depending on your student’s needs. We chose to do Part 1 — the general essay portion. I found it to be so helpful for many writing situations. My daughter agreed. She has been assigned essays in our homeschool co-op, so she’s aware of the great need to be able to write an essay well.

My daughter and I watched the videos together, while she took notes on the Student Handouts. Mr. Pudewa makes liberal use of his whiteboard. In homeschooling, there can be those students not used to taking notes in a class setting, so this is a valuable addition to the program. We spent about 30 minutes per day, a couple of days per week on this section.

So far, we have completed part 1: General Strategies for Essay Writing. Here’s what’s included:

Part 1A: General Strategies for Essay Writing: Length and Structure

  • Initial Exercise
  • A Hurt and Rescue Operation
  • What is an essay?
  • Two Questions Writers Need to Ask
  • Translating Assignment Length to Paragraphs
  • Types of Paragraph
  • The TRIAC Paragraph Model
  • Essay Models

Part 1B: General Strategies for Essay Writing: Invention and Style

  • Canons of Rhetoric
  • Practicing Common Topics of Invention
  • Practice with TRIAC Outline
  • Sentence Patterns
  • Literary Devices: Schemes and Tropes
  • Practice with Sentence Openers and Figures of Speech

We Love It – Here’s Why

This (and every IEW program) is not just filled with instruction. It includes tidbits of encouragement in advanced learning, such as the suggestion that memorizing the famous speeches of great speakers gives a student an enormous vocabulary, and an inventory of ideas to write about.

“The absolute worst way to build your vocabulary: workbooks.  If you really want to expand your vocabulary, it is through an act of your own will, and this mostly happens through reading.”  – Andrew Pudewa

There are many little gold nuggets like this one sprinkled throughout the videos. I really encourage parents to watch (or at least listen) to the videos with their students.

  • Students start the program by writing a short essay on the first day, and this essay is revisited in later sections for illustration. They will compare their original essay to the lessons learned in later sections.
  • In the General Essay section, students are given a handy way to decide how to approach their assigned essay, and to figure the length in paragraphs. The different types of paragraphs are explained and illustrated, as well as the different types of essays.
  • The invention section is a gem! How many kids are asked to compose an essay without much warning and suddenly go blank? Mr. Pudewa gives students a handy list to memorize for the thinking process when given an assignment for essay writing.
  • Style is discussed here, in a condensed version for those who have not taken any of the main IEW writing intensive courses.
  • Sentence patterns are illustrated, and then the student is asked to look at the patterns used in their original essay. Its very eye-opening!
  • Literary devices are then analyzed, with many illustrations from literature and famous speeches.
  • Finally, the student practices what they’ve learned!

Whether a student is tasked with writing a short, basic essay or a long “Super-Essay,” this course will arm them with the tools to jump in to that essay with confidence. And I’m pretty sure the results will be quite impressive.

SAT/ACT Prep

We have only completed the General Essay portion of this curriculum, so I cannot review the SAT/ACT Essay portion yet. However, knowing the incredible results that come from all IEW courses, I know for certain that students will be more than prepared to knock out a stellar essay on the spot as they prepare for the SAT and ACT.

One more thing (and this is minor), but I really like the leather-like disc case in this program. It’s not the standard multi-disc DVD holder with plastic prongs that never quite hold the multiple discs; you know the ones that slide around inside the case and you wonder if they are getting scratched? Yeah, that’s not how this one is. Bonus!

As I said earlier, excellent writing is a skill that serves everyone  well. I highly recommend the High School Essay Intensive from Institute for Excellence in Writing . The course is $79, and includes the DVDs, handouts, and portable walls. There is also a link (included in the DVD case) to stream the video courses if desired.

While you’re at the IEW website, check out the Resources link for lots of free helps, audios, and downloads. I love listening to Andrew Pudewa’s workshops. And if you follow IEW on social media, you’ll get some great printables as well as notice of regular Facebook parties (with giveaways!).

IEW High School Essay Intensive {review}

We had the opportunity to review the by the High School Essay Intensive by the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).

Thank goodness for writing programs like IEW. Even though I write professionally, I am extremely thankful for IEW. They help people like me who can already write, teach their children how to do the same.

I have been a fan of the Institute for Writing (IEW) writing curriculum for many years. I first learned of the company as a member of the Homeschool Review Crew. Although writing was already a subject I taught in our school, there were some elements of writing I felt I was leaving out, because so much of the writing I do is part my nature. When I read through the Student Writing Intensive elementary and middle school writing courses offered from IEW, I loved the presentation of the program. I knew it would fill in the gaps where I may have failed to teach my children. That was a few years ago.

My children write well and some love to write more than others. My rising high school child is one who does not enjoy writing much at all. Despite that, he is going to have to know how to write. We are entering the world of high school assignments and just knowing how to write a good paragraph is not going to work.

I have always told my children, they do not have to love writing, but must know how to do it; preferably well. The High School Essay Intensive, Second Edition [DVD Seminar & Handouts] is written for students in ninth through twelfth grades. It is a DVD course that comes with the following:

• 5 DVDs (6.5 hours) • Student Handouts • Portable Walls for the Essayist

Each CD contains about 6 ½ hours of content. There are four sections, which give you detailed information regarding the content. If you would like to enjoy full video content, you will need Internet access to use the program activation code. This is what is covered in the program .

Granted, you could start on any CD per your interest, but since this is a comprehensive program and can be done at the pace of your student, why not start from the beginning? That worked for River (and me). All of the material we have covered so far in the program has been very helpful. Some of the things I like that are included are defining what is an essay before delving into the experience of writing one. Also, the essay models were very helpful. The models are good for all students, but especially for those who do not like to write. Having examples of what is expected in an essay makes it clear. Not necessarily so students can go through and check off what they have done towards that goal, but so they can be sure they do not miss anything while writing.

The Portable Walls for the Essayist is an extremely handy tool. Not only does it define 11 types of essays like argumentative, compare-contrast, descriptive, narrative, process analysis and more, the walls provide help with transitional words, word lists, style techniques and others,

I really like the Understanding and Preparing for the New ACT Essay section, because we have already started preparing for the test. River will probably not take the test until next year, but the section has helped tremendously. I always hear the essay part of the test is a challenge. If your child does not like to write, imagine how much more of a challenge that could be for them. We have not made it through to the SAT section, but it appears to be just a thorough for helping students taking that exam. Rive and I both benefited from the lessons. I always love hearing Andrew Pudewa speak. It does not matter if it is in a classroom, work shop or convention setting. He is intelligent, funny and knows how to present a topic I love (writing and other topics at conventions) in a manner that is not boring. I only wish River could have taken the course live from Pudewa. He will speak in my area later this year, so I may see if River can get the live experience.

I am glad we had the opportunity to review High School Essay Intensive. It is just in time for my oldest and will be right on time for my younger two children once they begin high school. My daughter is already a Pudewa fan. She makes sure to speak to him each time at our annual homeschool convention. He is extremely personable on DVD and in person.

You may purchase the High School Essay Intensive, Second Edition [DVD Seminar & Handouts] for $79.

A Review of High School Essay Intensive from IEW

May 9, 2017 Lisa

I never thought I’d laugh while watching an instructional lecture on writing high school essays. But, the High School Essay Intensive from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) made it happen.

I’ve used IEW materials with Jayme many years ago, but have never gone through their high school material. Now that Jayme freshman year is almost over, and words like “SAT” and “Personal Essay for College” are entering our vocabulary, I realized that a review of essays was definitely in order. I was eager to review this product!

high school essay intensive iew

What Was Included?

When we opened up the box, we found 5 DVDs, a packet of student handouts, and an expandable folder that not only has a space to keep the notes, but also offers plenty of models, checklists, and strategies. This is called a portable wall, and it’s a super helpful resource!

high school essay intensive iew

Here’s what covered by the DVD lectures:

Part 1A – General Strategies for Essay Writing: Length and Structure

Part 1B – General Strategies for Essay Writing: Invention and Style

Part 2 – Understanding and Preparing for the New ACT Essay

Part 3 – Understanding and Preparing for the Redesigned SAT Essay

Part 4 – Strategies for the Personal Essay

I was super excited to see that the new SAT and ACT essay formats were included. I knew they’d changed, but wasn’t quite sure what was different. This was great for preparing!

How We Are Using This Product

Jayme and I are watching the DVD instruction together, and working through some practice activities. The first assignment was to write an essay on a given topic in 20 minutes.

We both wrote our essays and shared them, and now we’re dissecting those essays as we watch the instruction. We’re practicing writing introductions. Also, we’re brainstorming what style of essay would work best for a variety of topics. I kept finding ways to tie the instruction into blog posts, because that’s what I write. They really are a variation of the essay, and since Jayme is also blogging, it was a great way to connect personally to the instruction.

What I Thought

As I mentioned earlier, I loved the DVD portion. It’s over 6 hours long, and while we haven’t quite made it all the way through, every part we’ve watched has been high quality.

Andrew Pudewa tells it like it is, and I appreciate that. He shared the tip that helped me graduate with my master’s degree with a 4.0 GPA. I told Jayme to listen carefully as we rewatched that short segment.

The tip? To write what your teacher wants to read. You can’t use the exact same writing style and strategies in every class. Because grading written assignments like essays is so subjective, you must be adaptable!

Other things I liked about the lectures:

  • Note taking is encouraged (something we’ve been working on!)
  • Examples are given
  • It’s engaging
  • It really teaches a lot

Preparing for College Prep & College Entrance

The information presented definitely covered essays that your high schooler will need as the whole college prep/college entrance personal essay season of life rolls around. (I’m still in denial about how close that stage actually is…)

Definitely Recommend High School Essay Intensive

I definitely recommend High School Essay Intensive from Institute for Excellence in Writing if you’ve got a high schooler. We’ll be finishing this up, and reviewing it again in the next couple of years.

Iew: high school essay intensive (homeschool review crew).

high school essay intensive iew

  • Writing like this is not realistic.  You're not usually going to have only 20 minutes to write a cold essay.  (Even in an exam, you may not know the specific question, but you know going into a history class that the topic will be history.)
  • You're not likely to have your entire future riding on twelve sentences.
  • Writing is going to be different than speaking and sometimes sound stilted.  You need to grab the reader before they give up and turn the page, while when you're speaking, most  people will at least pretend to be polite and listen.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
