IncomeDiary currently pays between $150 to $300 for articles about SEO, content creation, online entrepreneurship, making money online, and driving traffic. 

If you can write with a feminist perspective,  LiisBeth  pays writers who believe in the site’s mission and have read articles from their magazine before pitching an article. Pay varies, and LiisBeth generally does not publish anything that’s been previously published.

With 275+ titles and counting, Chicken Soup for the Soul always has new books in development. You’ll be paid only if your submission is chosen to be published in one of their books, which takes six months to two years after submitting your work. You can get paid to write for the number one magazine for writers, which publishes content about the writing life and what it means to be a writer in today’s publishing environment.  Writer’s Digest  will consider completed manuscripts and original pitches. For manuscripts, pay ranges from $0.30 to $0.50 cents per word.

You can get paid $100 per article to write for Listverse, which is a site that publishes listicle-style articles on any number of topics, from once-dead languages to unsolved mysteries, and more.  Listverse says  you don’t need to be an expert or native English speaker to have your content published.

Freelance Mom will pay you $75 to $100 for articles selected for publication, and as you can imagine, articles should relate to parenting. They say articles that do the best include highly personal articles, highly researched articles, and education-based articles.  Freelance Mom pays  via PayPal.

SitePoint is a website dedicated to technology, and they are always looking for writers to contribute articles about JavaScript, Python, Rust, WebAssembly, Reach, Figma, and Tailwind CSS. Can you write a story about yourself in 100 words or less? If so, you can get paid to write for  Reader’s Digest . The pay is $100 for stories chosen for publication. 

The American Scholar is a quarterly publication that pays up to $500 for articles published in print and up to $250 for pieces published online only. They prefer content that’s 6,000 words or less on topics like public affairs, literature, science, history, and culture.  The American Scholar says  they accept fewer than two percent of unsolicited articles.

Early American Life is a publication that focuses on early American style, decorating, and traditions. Stories should run 750 to 2,500 words and center around a topic like history, architecture and decorating, antiques, studio crafts, or travel.  They estimate  pay of $500 for the first feature from a new writer. 

Copyhackers pays  in the range of $300 to $1,000 for every completed post that they accept, and they expect that their writers know a ton about the topic they’re writing about. You will need to pitch the team, and they respond to submissions within five days of receiving it. Copyhackers focuses on advertising, branding, UX, marketing, freelancing, and entrepreneurship.

Narratively says  that its mission “is to publish untold human stories that surprise, delight and captivate readers.” They recommend reading several pieces on their site before submitting anything so you get an idea of what Narratively is looking for. You can expect to get paid to write in the range of $300 to $400 per published article.

If you know about SEO, content marketing, or social media, then you can get paid to write for RankPay through their blogger program. You will have to follow  RankPay’s submission guidelines , including 1,000+ words; strong use of data, imagery, and quotes; and can write actionable, unique, and actionable content.

The next part of this list outlines  freelance websites  where writers can find paying gigs, ranging from web copy, emails, articles, sales pages, and much more. Most of the jobs on these platforms are open to any writer on the site, so you’ll have to submit a stellar pitch to stand out.

To start applying for writing jobs on ProBlogger, you will need to create an account and register as a candidate. To have the best experience, we recommend creating a detailed profile, ideally including a photo, share your personal writing website, niche, experience, and education.

Upwork is a large site, and you’ll be competing with a number of freelancers, but it’s still a great place for new writers to break into the market and gain valuable experience and testimonials. Having a detailed profile is important, and Upwork keeps a percentage of all earnings generated through the platform.

This platform is very similar to Upwork, and there’s a large volume of writers and one-off writing jobs. It’s free to join Fiverr, and once you’ve joined, you will need to create packaged writing services that outline what type of work you can do. 

Freelancer is used by top companies — like Facebook, Amazon, NASA, and Deloitte — to find skilled freelancers in a number of industries. You can find gigs that pay you to write blog posts, articles, web copy, landing pages, emails, and more. You can expect to pay a 10% fee on any hours or projects you bill for on Freelancer.

If you’re an experienced writer, Mediabistro is one of the best sites to look for work. Well-known media companies — like Bloomberg, NBC Universal, CNN, and HBO — use Mediabistro to find freelance writers,  proofreaders , graphic designers, social media managers, and more.

Upwork is a freelancer marketplace and go-to source for business owners looking for all kinds of digital services. You can find hundreds of paid writing jobs in dozens of subjects.

One of the benefits of using Upwork is that you won’t have to chase down payment from clients. All invoices and payments happen through Upwork, and you’re guaranteed payment for the work you do.

The downside is that Upwork charges a 20% fee on your first $500 earned with each client, 10% up to $10,000, and 5% beyond that. It’s a good place to get started, but you won’t want to use it for long.

Known for offering services starting at $5, Fiverr is a marketplace for freelancers to showcase their services to prospective clients. You create a profile, list a “gig,” and then it becomes available to a global audience.

All communication and payments are processed through Fiverr, but it also charges a steep 20% fee on all earnings. If you’re nervous about reaching out to clients yourself, Fiverr can be a good platform where they come to you.

But you’ll have to do something to make yourself stand out in a sea of other writers. That’s where specializing in one subject matter can be your strength.

Writers, designers, videographers, and other creatives can all find jobs on Skyword . Skyword is a marketplace where you can find jobs and be found by clients. It works with both small and high-profile clients and is a great way to make the jump from lower-paying job sites.

You can’t just sign up for Skyword clients. Fill out a profile and wait until you’re hand-selected for jobs, meaning your profile can sit in Skyword for a long time before you’re submitted to clients or able to view job opportunities. You can increase your chances of being picked by editors by keeping your social media relevant and updated.

5. ClearVoice

ClearVoice connects qualified writers with job opportunities based on the writer’s CV or ClearVoice portfolio. Once you complete your CV, you’ll be able to join ClearVoice’s Talent Network and have your CV sent to prospective clients.

Writers are then handpicked for opportunities based on their CV, so there’s an incentive to create one that stands out. You set your own rates and are paid via PayPal upon assignment approval, so you get the security of going through a marketplace without the fees typically associated with them.

6. Contently

Contently is an online writing agency that connects freelance writers with businesses. Many writers use the site for its free portfolio service, but Contently editors use these portfolios to handpick freelancers for clients.

Many high-profile websites and companies use Contently to source writers, so the jobs pay well. These jobs tend to go to the most experienced candidates, and it can take years for an editor at Contently to refer you to a client. But if you’re patient, Contently can offer lucrative writing opportunities.

Another place experienced freelance writers can find high-paying jobs is on nDash . nDash is a content platform where writers can create a profile and pitch ideas for blogs, articles, and whitepapers to prospective clients.

nDash claims the average writing assignment on its platform pays between $175 to $450. Once an assignment is approved, payment is deposited directly into the writer’s bank account within two to three business days.

It’s a relatively new site so not as many companies are using it, but writers have reported that if you’re willing to pitch more, you’ll make a decent income.

8. SmartBug

SmartBug is a content marketing company specializing in B2B (business to business) marketing and copywriting. Its writers produce content for the web, social media, email, sales pages, and more.

This is a great site for writers who aren’t beginners but may not have the experience or portfolio to compete for jobs with other top writers. There’s no direct way to apply, but you can fill out a general interest application on the website.

9. NewsCred

NewsCred is a community for experienced freelance content creators. In-house editors pair creators with customer programs, but you can also view freelance positions on the platform. Then NewsCred’s editorial team serves as your managing editor for all client work.

You can find high-profile Fortune 500 companies from a variety of industries using NewsCred, the most popular being tech, healthcare, and financial services. There’s currently no button to apply on NewsCred’s website, but you can contact the company via the contact form on its website.

10. The Writer Finder

Growth Machine is an SEO-focused content marketing company with a freelance writing platform called The Writer Finder . Growth Machine works with a variety of clients in AI, travel, wellness, dogs, weddings, and more.

What sets The Writer Finder apart is the Slack group for freelance writers. It lets you communicate with other freelance writers on the team. Rates are competitive, and you’ll also have the chance to learn sought-after SEO skills.

Apply for Assignments on the Best Freelance Writing Job Boards

Job boards are easy places for companies to post their jobs. The job board doesn’t vet freelancers, handle payments, or make promises on behalf of clients.

There are some things to be aware of when applying and taking a job from a job board. Because the service is free for writers, you’re competing against thousands of other bloggers for a limited number of jobs.

Job boards are also notorious for phishing scams. “Clients” may ask you to download a zip file of their payment terms or writing guidelines and ask you to invoice them via PayPal. The zip file is actually a keystroke logger allowing them to steal your PayPal credentials. Be careful when applying to jobs on these boards.

11. ProBlogger

The ProBlogger job board is updated daily with blogging and article writing jobs across all subjects.

Businesses have to pay ProBlogger to post their job ad, meaning the writer isn’t paid through ProBlogger. They don’t charge the writer any fees for joining or getting paid.

Another job board filled with many freelance writing opportunities is Indeed . You can find full-time, part-time, and freelance remote writing jobs across all subjects, and because of the vastness of the board, competition isn’t as high compared to others.

13. MediaBistro

Journalists and anyone else in media will find MediaBistro helpful for finding jobs in the industry. If you’re looking for paid writing jobs in marketing, advertising, television, or news, you can find hundreds of jobs from recognizable names on MediaBistro’s job board.

There are entry-level positions listed, but your best move is to get enough writing experience to make a professional-looking resume before you start applying for jobs on this site.

How to Get Paid to Write (Step by Step) 

Before you apply to get paid for writing, there are a few things you should do to make yourself stand out to potential clients.

1. Choose What to Write About

When you’re writing for money, you might think that only writing about a couple of topics limits your options, but it actually expands them. Sites and companies that pay well don’t want freelancers who write about anything, they want experts in their field. When you stick to a single niche and become known for it, you’ll become a sought-after writer.

Academic Writers Online is one of the many sites where you can get paid to write essays.

• They are reported to pay between $9 and $15 per page, and payments are issued twice a month.

The application process is free through this company and involves sending over writing samples and a resume or CV. They receive hundreds of applications every day, but they try to respond to all applications within just two or three business days. In some cases, it can take up to five business days to hear back.

Most of the customers that hire Academic Writers Online are businessmen, bloggers, site owners, and students, according to the company. Writers are responsible for taking care of writing, editing, and/or proofreading tasks.

When you work for Academic Writers Online , you can choose to write as little or as much as you want. The average deadline for essays here is one to two days, but some of them might have deadlines ranging from a few hours to several months.

3. AdvancedWriters

Advanced Writers works with a pretty large team of writers who help their clients write everything from research papers to case studies . Unfortunately, they are not transparent about the rates that they offer writers, and it appears that they may not pay as generously as some of the other sites on our list.

• Judging from reviews of the services on other sites, it seems that Advanced Writers charges $15 per page for essays of any type, and the rate can go up to $21 per page for theses or dissertations. Depending on what percentage goes to the writers, you'll have to decide for yourself whether this is an opportunity you want to take advantage of.

4. PaperHelp

Paper Help requires that writers complete a writing test and submit a resume via email in order to apply. If you are accepted, you'll first begin at a lower pay rate during a probation period in order for the company to determine whether you are a good fit. Over time, you can work your way up and start earning a higher price per page.

Though Paper Help doesn't advertise the rates that they pay writers, they are one of the better-reviewed academic essay writing services out there. Pricing depends on the academic level, the type of service, the type of paper, and the length of the essay, in addition to how quickly clients need the paper to be completed.

• Their prices start as low as $12 per page for high school-level papers and start at $20 per page for professional-level essays.

5. Essaypro

EssayPro has a fairly thorough hiring process in order to ensure that they are able to offer high-quality essays and papers to their clients. As a part of the application process, they will need proof of identity, diploma verification, and writing samples.

They will also give you a test assignment before you are permitted to begin a trial period. One of the things that is unique about this service is that you can set your own rates and choose your own assignments. They pay twice a month, once on the 15th and once on the last day of the month.

Rather than being assigned essays, when you work with Essaypro, you have to bid on orders that customers place.

• Your pay rate will increase if you successfully follow directions and turn in your essays on time.

Writing Creek is another site you can use to make money writing academic essays.

• They pay between $4 and $12 a page, with the pay rate depending on your experience.

They pay twice a month and always have assignments available, meaning that you can work as much or as little as you want. They advertise that writers can begin earning money in as little as three days. In order to work with them, you'll need to:

• Complete a skills survey
• Take a qualification test
• Submit a sample essay
• Offer proof of identification

They ask that their writers have the following skills:

• Advanced grasp of the English language
• Proficiency in a particular area of study
• Excellent communication skills
• The ability to write original content
• The ability to conduct research

When you read the reviews for Writing Creek from other writers, you find that they are extremely mixed. Some go as far as to say that this service is a scam, while others give five stars and rave reviews for the company. You will want to proceed with caution with any of these sites because the academic essay-writing industry is, unfortunately, a place where there are plenty of scammers.

7. EssayShark

Essay Shark is a site where freelancers can register and then bid on projects that interest them.

• They are reported to pay anywhere between $5 and $15 a page for essays.

Glassdoor reports that freelance writers, on average, make $4,615 per month with Essay Shark, but how much you take home is obviously going to depend on how much you work.

Though you need to be skeptical of any companies that claim to pay writers for academic essays because it is an industry where scammers abound, EssayShark is one of the sites that has abundant rave reviews from both writers and clients.

As I've been driving home over and over, you need to be very careful with these academic essay writing sites. To Essay Shark's credit, they have some of the best reviews of any of the companies on our list.

Sites That Pay For Personal Essays

If you don't love the idea of writing essays for people in high school, undergraduate, or graduate school, or if you simply aren't psyched about the idea of writing academic essays, turn your head in the direction of these seven sites that pay great rates for personal essays.

A personal essay is a piece of autobiographical nonfiction that shares a thought-provoking, interesting, entertaining, or humorous story with readers. These are pieces that are drawn from the personal experience of the author.

Bustle is an online American women's magazine that has been around for nearly a decade. Focusing on topics like celebrities, beauty, and fashion trends while also touching upon politics and news, they accept pitches for personal essays as well as:

Though they love it when you include personal anecdotes in your article, they don't want the whole thing to be all about your personal experience. 14. Magazine Writer

There are thousands of magazines available throughout the world. From glossy newsstand magazines like those you see on racks at the grocery store or airport to association magazines and trade journals, there’s a magazine for every topic, in print or online.

And all those magazines need articles written for them!

It can be difficult to break into writing for the best-known magazines; those tend to have regular groups of writers they work with often or even have staff members writing most of their articles. However, even big magazines are often willing to take pitches from new writers. You’ll need to be able to do solid research, follow directions perfectly, and write very persuasively to convince the grant board that your client deserves the money it’s asking for.

Skilled grant writers can make a very good living working with a variety of clients across industries. Any organization that needs to compete for funding could use a good grant writer!

27. Resume and Cover Letter Writer

Most people dread updating their resume and writing a cover letter. It seems like a horrible chore to condense all you’ve done into a single page that will barely get glanced at by a recruiter.

If, on the other hand, you think that presenting someone’s work history, skills, and expertise in a simple, clear, brief format is an exciting challenge, you’d make a great resume writer!

In this largely freelance field, you’ll help job-seekers polish up their resumes, focus on what’s really important for the next job they’d like to have, write a compelling cover letter, and maybe even tune up their LinkedIn profile.

You’ll need to combine the talents of a marketing copywriter with the personal touch of a career coach, homing in on what makes your client special and how to help them stand out at a glance.

28. Business Plan Writer

Combine the skills of a resume writer with those of a grant writer and you get the business plan writer!

As more people flex their entrepreneurial muscles, there are increasing opportunities for freelancers who can distill someone’s business vision into a thorough, clear document that can be presented to banks, investors, and others to help the business get funding.

You’ll need to be able to understand complex business topics, analytics, financial information, and more and be able to craft storylines out of this to explain why an investor should want to back the business. You’ll also need solid research skills to help uncover possible market competition or opportunities that should be presented in the plan.

Being a whiz with PowerPoint will also help here; if you can transform your business plan into a pitch deck for your client, you’ll be invaluable!

29. Instructions Writer

These days, it seems like nearly everything comes with an instruction manual, either in print or online. And someone has to write all those instructions!

In most cases, these booklets are created in-house at the company that manufactures or retails the product being described. However, many smaller companies may not have an in-house writing team and will need help getting a good, easy-to-follow set of instructions written.

If you have a manufacturing industry in your town, consider reaching out to see if they need help with the instructions for their products. With a few jobs in your portfolio, you can start marketing your services writing clear instructions to more and more companies in the industry you’re interested in—or even find a full-time, in-house job as an instructions writer, if you want!

30. Executive Assistant

No, this isn’t a mistake—executive assistant can be a great job for a writer! You’re not just fetching coffee and managing conference room bookings here; you’re helping draft business memos, write formal correspondence, manage emails, and more.

If you have an impeccable professional persona and you’re able to juggle many tasks and deadlines at once, this could be a good fit for you. You’ll help your boss make sure that emails are responded to clearly and thoroughly (and on time!), prep for presentations and speeches, and more—maybe even managing the company newsletter or assisting with generating reports and studies for the board or various clients.

31. Marketing Copywriter

Ad and marketing copywriting isn’t all Mad Men antics and midafternoon whiskey breaks. It’s actually a complicated fusion of business insights, creative writing skills, consumer psychology, and out-of-the-box thinking that all mixes together to create memorable, catchy ad campaigns to sell products or services to consumers.

Marketing copywriters work on everything from TV ad campaigns to billboards, magazine ads, online banner ads, creative Snapchat campaigns, product packaging, direct mail flyers, and more.

Whether you’re working in-house or as a freelancer, you’ll often work with a graphic designer to pair the right words and images for maximum effect.

If you’re already working a full-time job, you might be able to build your copywriting portfolio by offering to do some work with the marketing department; if your company doesn’t have a dedicated marketing department, offer to do some copywriting to help boost the company’s latest initiative.

Alternatively, you can also reach out to local businesses or even colleges in your area to pitch your services as a marketing copywriter to start building your portfolio. You can also offer to swap your services with other freelancers if you need work done—how about trading a tagline and some website writing to a graphic designer in exchange for getting a new business logo?

32. B2B Copywriter

B2B (business-to-business) copywriters help businesses sell their products or services to other businesses, rather than directly to end consumers. If you’re a whiz at increasing conversion rates and can sell ice to a penguin, this could be your perfect career.

As with most writing careers, you’ll need samples of your work and proof that you get good results with your work, but it’s fairly easy to get started by offering to help write landing pages or improve sales scripts for some local companies or setting up a profile on Upwork or Fiverr to get some small jobs to build your portfolio.

33. Social Media Writer

As companies realize that they need to be on social media, they are also starting to realize that they need help keeping up with all the content required there. Social media writers craft Facebook posts, Twitter updates, Pinterest boards, and more to help companies connect with their audiences.

You’ll need a good understanding of audience outreach and what types of posts and content work best on what channels. You’ll also need a good grasp of analytics to help you show the ROI for your work and what social media investments are paying off for the company.

Having multimedia capabilities is a bonus here—if you can design an infographic, create image posts for visual media like Instagram or Pinterest, or produce videos for Facebook and Snapchat, you’ll be in high demand as a social media writer!

34. Media Relations Specialist

Bridging the gap between a business writer and a journalist is the media relations specialist. As part of a company’s communications department (or as a freelancer), you’ll help companies connect with journalists and publications to spread the word about their products and services.

You’ll often find yourself writing press releases and arranging (or even giving) interviews about your company’s or client’s services. Hopefully you won’t frequently be doing damage control over some crisis or scandal, although that’s also part of the job!

If you’ve previously worked as a journalist, this might be a fantastic new career for you—knowing what journalists need and want to get from their contacts will make it easier for you to craft solid pitches that bring excellent media exposure for your clients.

35. Newspaper Reporter

Even in today’s fast-paced digital world, there’s still a thriving market for newspapers. Plenty of people want the day’s news, opinions, stock market moves, and more delivered to their door in the morning—and as more newspapers expand their online operations, there are actually new jobs for agile reporters being created.

As a newspaper journalist, you’ll probably start out by working for a local daily, weekly, or monthly paper that covers activities in your town. You might get sent to a town board meeting one day and a high school basketball game the next—one thing’s for sure, you’ll never get bored with the same old routine!

You’ll need excellent interviewing skills, a good memory (or fast note-taking and transcription abilities), and an ability to get along well with others while still asking probing questions to get to the heart of a story or the best angle for your coverage. You’ll also need to be willing to work strange hours—reporters have to be available to cover news whenever it happens, and you’ll often have assignments on nights and weekends.

With experience, you can move up to a larger paper in a bigger market, help develop online offerings for your paper, or become what’s called a “stringer” for a news service like AP or Reuters. Basically, you’ll be a freelancer covering breaking news in your area or on your beat (your topic of expertise) and you’ll file stories that newspapers all over the world can pick up and run—with your byline on them. Pretty cool!

36. News Blogger

Similar to a newspaper reporter, a news blogger is always looking for the latest scoop. But in this case, rather than reporting for a print publication with an online component, you’ll be working for a fast-paced online publication.

In many cases, breaking news sites need writers available 24/7 to cover whatever happens next in the world—so this can be a great job for night owls or people who like working unconventional hours.

You might also work covering news in a particular industry, like mining news or business openings and closings. Many trade or association websites need associate editors monitoring all the happenings in their industry and blogging about this breaking news to keep their audience up to date.

37. Long-Form Journalist

Though many lamented the death of long-form writing when the internet seemed to slash all our attention spans, the field is undergoing a renaissance…thanks to the internet! Sites like Medium encourage readers to engage with pieces that go beyond the bite-sized into really in-depth discussions of weighty topics.

Plus, more magazines, newspapers, weekly editions, and other publications are starting to include long-form articles in their mix again. Readers want to know more about what’s going on behind the scenes, and long-form journalists are able to dive deep into a topic to present not just what’s going on now, but what led to it and where it might be going in the future.

If you love researching and presenting a topic in all its complexity, this could be a rewarding path to pursue. You’ll need to be good at developing a narrative voice and shaping themes around a nonfiction topic, much like a nonfiction book author would do, but you’ll also need to be able to condense all that information into a mid-range length—something that takes an hour or two to read, rather than a few minutes or a few days.

38. Investigative Journalist

Deep cuts to the budgets of many newspapers and news TV shows left naysayers fearing that hard-hitting investigative journalism was becoming a thing of the past. After all, who would pay people to dig deep into political scandals, economic crises, environmental issues, or social movements if the newspapers were going broke? The internet is just for entertainment, right?

Wrong! Investigative journalism is alive and well—and often funded by websites that want to do more than simply publish listicles about cat videos. In fact, some of the most powerful investigative and cultural journalism of recent times has appeared on Buzzfeed, a site that made its name as a mindless pop-culture haven.

Lately, though, Buzzfeed and other sites have started breaking news about spying rings, digging into celebrity and political scandals, uncovering bad behavior by tech companies that can jeopardize consumer privacy, and more.

If you love finding out the truth behind a story, this career is for you! You’ll need a lot of patience and perseverance, as tracking down your scoop will require doing lots of interviews, pinning down sources, wading through government information requests and huge stacks of complex documents, and more.

But the end result of informing and enlightening your audience while pushing for change and reform? Totally worth it.

39. Columnist

Newspapers, websites, magazines, and other publications often rely on the opinions of informed individuals to round out their coverage. Becoming a columnist is a great way to share your expertise and opinions with a broader audience.

Most columnists start out with a smaller publication, whether that’s their hometown newspaper or a trade magazine. To get the job, you’ll want to send samples of your work on a particular topic, demonstrating how you can add a fresh voice to the conversation and provoke interaction from readers.

The best columnists don’t just stand on a soapbox; they get other people talking and continue engagement across channels, no matter what they’re writing about.

So as you can see, there’s pretty much an ideal career path for anyone who’s interested in making money writing. And getting started in any of these areas is really just a matter of putting your mind to it, learning the craft, and investing time and effort in your work.

At first, you may need to put in some long hours outside your day job to build your skills and to create some samples to show to potential employers, especially if you’re transitioning from a different area into a writing career. But if you spend just an hour or two a day on writing some articles and sending them out in your area of interest, you may find yourself building up enough of a side hustle writing that you can decide to make it your full-time career!

Interesting little article. I am about to turn 18, and though I have never considered a career in writing, I am thinking it may be worth dabbling into. I write mainly poetry and short stories on my own time for myself, although I show them to other people. two years ago I started a magazine at my school publishing student submitted poems and stories to the rest of the school. My friends have said that my work is very good, even comparing to famous poets such as Robert Frost or others – and I agree that my work is very good and I am proud of it.

Of course, making this happen isn’t always easy. Finding good freelance writing jobs can be challenging even for experienced writers, and breaking into the business is indeed difficult.

Select your categories (there are several under “Writing”), your preferred work schedule, your experience level and more to hone down your search results to those that best fit the freelance writer job you’re looking for. You can also set alerts so you’re notified when new jobs matching your search criteria are posted.

3. SolidGigs

SolidGigs is part job board, part productivity tool. Why? Because their team literally saves you hours of scouring job boards. They hand-pick the best gigs from around the web and compile them into a weekly email, including remote opportunities. 

It’s $21/month to subscribe, and they offer a free seven-day trial . Along with curated job opportunities, you’ll also get access to business training courses and hundreds of lessons on freelancing and interviews with successful freelancers .

4. Opportunities of the Week

Sonia Weiser’s bi-weekly newsletter has become a must-have for freelance writers. She gathers dozens of calls for pitches from Twitter and emails them to her community twice a week. She offers the service through Ghost, where she asks for a membership contribution of up to $10 (and also offers sponsorships for those who can’t afford it). If you can only make a one-time contribution, she provides an option for that, too.

In addition to freelance writing jobs, she includes career advice, resources on how much different outlets pay, and other helpful links.

5. Working In Content

Working In Content aims to connect organizations with passionate content professionals. As a bonus, it values diversity, equity and inclusion, and it encourages the employers it works with to do the same. 

Whether you’re a UX writer or a content strategist, this site is a great option to find work in content design, marketing, management and more. It offers full-time and contract roles that are either remote or in cities like Seattle, New York City and San Francisco.

This site is a content writing job board that includes remote, freelance, contract and full-time jobs. To peruse these hand-picked writing opportunities, visit the site online, sign up for daily job alerts or subscribe to its paid newsletter that shares brand new openings once per week for $10/month. 

Another good resource: This site offers a content writing blog that features long-form interviews with prolific content writers, authors and founders who share tips of the trade.

8. Behance Creative Jobs

Powered by Adobe, Behance is an online platform for creative professionals to showcase their work, find inspiration and connect with companies looking to hire. 

Behance allows you to upload your past projects to quickly create a visually-pleasing online portfolio, making it a great resource for writers without a website . It has its own job board which you can browse to find your next career move or freelance writing job!

9. MediaBistro

MediaBistro is a great resource for media freelancers of all stripes, offering online courses, tools and information that can help you navigate your career.

Be sure to check out the freelance job board section of the site, as well, for a wide range of jobs for all experience levels from industries like TV, PR/marketing, magazine and book publishing and social media — a little something for everyone.

10. FreelanceWriting

FreelanceWriting provides a nice compendium of freelance writing and editing jobs with competitive pay rates. 

With exclusive job opportunities as well as posts pulled from sites like Indeed and Craigslist, the job board consolidates a variety of gigs for everyone from newbie to seasoned freelancers. Save yourself the time of scouring numerous sites and let this newsletter bring the decent jobs right to your inbox.

11. Who Pays Writers?

Who Pays Writers? is a crowd-sourced list of publications that pay freelance writers — and it’s a gold mine. The list has hundreds of publications to explore; it not only shows you which publications are accepting submissions, it also tells you how much they pay per word. 

The site primarily offers writers a good research opportunity to learn how much different publications pay, but there are some online blogging opportunities as well (depending on the publication). Maintained by an anonymous volunteer collective, the list is updated monthly.

12. The Ultimate List of Better-Paid Blogging Gigs

Freelancer Sophie Lizard compiled a free ebook listing 75 blogs that pay $50 to $2,000 per post, broken down into sections like Writing Blogs, Food Blogs, etc. She also includes some good tips on how to approach these blogs, how to promote yourself once you’ve landed a post, and more.

13. LinkedIn Jobs

If you’ve already got a LinkedIn profile (and you really should to attract new clients ), don’t let it just sit there. Networking goes a long way in the freelance world, and LinkedIn is a great resource to do some networking through common connections.

While you’re doing that networking, check out the Job s section and sign up for email alerts when jobs are posted that match your interests. Many will be location-based, but who’s to say you can’t approach these employers with a proposal for freelance writing services ? Maybe they need someone to fill the gap in the hiring interim, or maybe the job could just as easily be done remotely but they hadn’t considered that. Talk about a different kind of pitch! 

14. Freelance Writing Gigs

This invaluable resource updates daily with online writing jobs scooped from around the ‘net. It’s also got a rich archive filled with posts offering all kinds of tips and insight for beginning and experienced freelancers alike.

Along with the daily blog posts, you can also check out the Freelance Writing Gigs Board , where those in need of copy services of all sorts post jobs on the regular.

Although Upwork has a bit of a reputation for offering low-rate jobs, it’s definitely possible to find postings offering livable wages for writing jobs online. When this article was published, a job to write a finance/trading article for $500 and a ghostwriter gig for $600 were both listed.

16. Where to Pitch

This last one takes a little bit of forethought and footwork; instead of simply listing online writing jobs, Where to Pitch offers a list of potential venues when you type in a topic you’re interested in working on. If you’re willing to put in that effort, you’re bound to find some new publications to pitch.

Contena markets itself as an online programme and suite of tools designed to help users get started with freelance writing and remote work.

They operate through a membership scheme with prospective users invited to fill out a simple form on their website, however anyone is able to view the list of jobs available, which is impressively extensive.

Independent reviews suggest Contena is indeed a great resource, so you should definitely check it out when seeking new opportunities.

Alright, but how do you run a freelance writing business, anyway?

Even with tons of resources for finding online writing jobs, it can be hard to know exactly what it takes to get your foot in the door with those editors. After all, you don’t just fall into a job (usually); you’ve got to prove to someone that you’re the right fit.

All of that to say nothing of the fact that running a freelance writing business is its own job, once you get started. You’ll have to negotiate pay raises, deal with editorial disagreements, and even — perish the thought — figure out self-employment taxes .

Savvy teachers and professors caught on to this, and the rise of plagiarism checkers forced students, who didn't want to write their papers, to find an alternative.

There are challenges and cons to writing student papers for pay. For one, especially for college entrance exam essays, it can be difficult to match a student’s tone and voice. You may be a talented writer, but it stands to reason that your customer is not. How polished, exactly, should this work be without giving away that the student isn't the writer? This will depend on the topic and level of the course the paper is written for. Some companies frame their service as "model" papers, with the expectation that the student will take the paper and tweak it, sort of like private label rights, to make it their own.

Another issue is the research or reading inherent in college-level work. You might be able to write a three-page essay in an hour, earning $45 per hour, but if you have to read a book or other literature first, or do research, that will significantly lower your per-hour earnings.

The main consideration in this type of work is ethics. A writer who does this type of work is helping a student cheat. While not illegal, the freelance writer should understand that this doesn't mean it’s free of consequences. The student risks expulsion, if discovered. For the writer, it can hurt his or her reputation. Ask yourself what your cost would be, were it known, that you engage in this kind of work.

As mentioned earlier, some service providers get around the ethics question by insisting that the writing they sell to students are unique model papers that the student is supposed to use to help them learn. But chances are good that the student puts their name on the delivered product and turns it in.

Of course, as a freelance writer, you need to pay the bills, and so if you're in a bind, and need to make decent money quickly, student paper writing can help. Especially if you consider that the student is going to pay someone to write the paper. Why not you?

Here are some basic guidelines for writing about money in general content. These guidelines are based on The Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago style) and The Associated Press Stylebook (AP style). Our other primary style guides have been excluded because they provide little to no recommendations for formatting money.

All the examples shown below are for U.S. currency. “ How to Write Euros and Pounds as Words and Symbols ” explains how to format euros and pounds and “ How to Write Non-U.S. Dollars as Words and Symbols ” explains how to format dollars outside of the United States, such as Australian dollars and Hong Kong dollars.

Dollars and Cents without Numerals

Spell out references to dollars and cents without numerals. 1

Lee didn’t mind paying a few more dollars to get his car waxed after it was washed.

The price of gas has dropped several cents in the past week.

Amounts of Money Less than $1

Followers of AP style should use numerals with the word cent or cents for amounts of money less than $1. 2

Why does the penny candy in the jar cost 12 cents instead of 1 cent ?

Retailers in Chicago must charge customers 7 cents per bag.

Other than isolated references, followers of Chicago style should use the cent sign for amounts of money less than $1. However, if the reference appears near another amount of money $1 or greater, the cents should be formatted with the dollar sign and numerals. 3

The dairy charges a 5¢ deposit per bottle.

If you aren’t a strict follower of AP style or Chicago style, simply choose a style and follow it consistently throughout your document. Although I personally follow Chicago style, I prefer the AP’s recommendation for spelling out cent because the cent sign is not readily available on standard keyboards.

Amounts of Money Greater than 99¢ but Less than $1 Million

Use the dollar sign and numerals for specific amounts of money great then 99¢ but less than $1 million. 4

This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

• Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
• Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
• Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
• Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

• Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
• Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
• Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
• Tell you what to say and how to say it
• Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
• Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

• An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
• An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
• An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

• If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
• If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
• If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

• Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
• Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
• Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

• Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
• How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
• Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
• Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

• Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
• Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
• Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
• Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
• What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

• You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
• A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
• A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
• A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
• All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
• Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
• If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
• Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

Writing a personal essay is more art than science. Discussing money — what you or your family has or lacks — is tricky under the best of circumstances. Doing both well is harder still, especially if you’re a teenager and a committee of grown-ups will sit in judgment on whatever you produce.

Each year, we invite essayists to forward their work to us after they’ve submitted their thoughts on money, work, social class and related matters as part of their college applications. At their best, they inspire a kind of empathy, even if money is not on your mind all that often.

This time, we find ourselves in the human resources department with a racing mind; the kitchen as a daughter observes her mother making do; the car, driving many miles for so many reasons; the house, stuffed with way too much; and the head of a young woman wondering if her soft hands bring honor upon her family.

To write this way about these topics requires perspective, about who has what and why and how. But it also demands bravery — to go where most people don’t, including a lot of adults.

Mom always told me that if my hands were smooth and unblemished nobody would be able to tell my age.

She wore rings and gloves to cover up the premature wrinkles from her time as a waitress in high school and the scars on her fingers from her first four years in America as a seamstress.

Try as she might, no amount of jewelry or hand cream could erase those markings. But I envied her imperfections: Mom’s weathered hands spoke volumes about her strength, selflessness and love.

Whenever my family gathered at the dinner table, I would steal glances at their hands. Each wrinkle and scar read like a chapter of a life well lived: a life full of purpose. When I looked at my smooth knuckles and babylike palms, I wondered when I would receive markings that told my story.

When Dad squeezed my hand as we crossed the street, I tried to place the sharp ridges and rock-hard calluses that dug into my soft skin. Did they come from summers in Montenegro, gripping the worn handle of the scythe to cut hay? Were they caused by heavy tiles nicking his palms during the kitchen renovations that paid for my babysitters?

During summers in Pljevlja in Montenegro, I would watch Grandma’s trembling hands as she kneaded each piece of burek. What initially seemed like splotches of flour were actually burn scars from 70 years of cooking. Perhaps they came from adding one too many coals to the furnace or accidentally lifting pots out of the oven with her bare hands.

Their hands symbolized their love and sacrifice for family. But my unblemished hands signified nothing in return, only evidence of wasting away their hard work. So I tried to gain markings the only way I knew how: mimicking my family’s defining actions.

I attempted Grandma’s burek, but my imitation’s flaky shell hardened each time I took it out of the oven. And my burns never felt purposeful, only documentation of my mediocrity.

I tried picking up a needle and thread like Mom. But even as my hands took the shape of hers, the needle pricks left me unsatisfied — it never came naturally like for Mom.

My hands began to read like a list of failed ventures — until I found volleyball. Volleyball seemed like a forbidden interest, so independent from family. But each purposeful movement left me satiated with fulfillment. I picked up the game quickly, and my parents were thrilled: Recruitment was my ticket into a top university. I even fractured my thumb while diving for the ball, the bone awkwardly jutting out as my own personal talisman of greater purpose.

But during high school, I was exposed to a plethora of other opportunities. I began spending Monday nights practicing cases for Mock Trial and dedicated weekends to taking photographs for my school’s Dynamo literary magazine. And though my hands remained unchanged, these passions, along with others, showed me sides of my identity that I didn’t know existed.

But with little time left for volleyball, I came to the decision to leave my club team. My crooked thumb became an ominous reminder of another failed pursuit.

My parents were furious. They perceived my new activities as unfocused distractions, leading me away from my ticket to college.

I soon understood that my parents’ anger did not stem from disappointment, but from unfamiliarity. Their only path forward was committing to their available roles, never pondering the existential questions I did: self-discovery in a sea of options.

Becoming “lost” for pursuing seemingly unconnected interests was not what they envisioned for me, but I realized that the best way to fully take advantage of my privileges was to explore all my curiosities. I stopped emulating the identities of my family and realized that my hands would eventually bear the weight of my pursuits.

More importantly, those markings and hands will be my own, not my mother’s or father’s.

The room was stuffy, cramped and packed with teenagers. I was about to embark on a new adventure — my first job. I made sure I brought everything listed on the required materials list: Social Security card, passport, student ID, work permit.

As I waited for the human resources personnel to call my name, I gingerly opened my passport. A glance at the photo taken when I was 12 brought a big smile to my face: Chubby cheeks. Bowl cut hair. Forced smile. My jolly mood quickly faded when I read the expiration date: 03 Jan 2022. As I flipped through, each page was blank. My heart felt empty.

I tried to shake off the sadness dominating my thoughts. I should not have been bothered by my empty passport or its pending expiration date. But I was. It was a painful reminder that I had never left the country, not once in my entire life.

I remained quiet even as my mom repeatedly asked how my job orientation went. My replies were a mere yes or no. But when we got home, I held up my passport and finally dared to ask her. She looked at me and responded: “I’m sorry, but we can’t afford it. Airfares alone for a family of five would cost an arm and a leg.” Her quavering voice said it all. I walked away, empty. My passport was for “just in case,” not “when.”

When I spend time with Grandma, I am greeted by her cabinet full of cherished souvenirs. Some mark her 90 years on earth, others Grandpa’s travels as a merchant marine. Admiring the elephant tusk from India, brass plates from Morocco and hand-carved Last Supper wall hanging from Italy, I often wondered what it was like to travel the world just like Grandpa did.

Today, I catch myself looking back at those visits at Grandma’s and realizing I don’t need to leave my beloved city — Los Angeles — to experience the world. I satisfy my wanderlust by feasting on hearty, delicious global cuisines here in my neighborhood. Couscous from Morocco. Vindaloo from India. Gelato from Italy. Each is a small marker of my city’s diverse population and the perspectives and experiences surrounding me.

The first and last thing I see from my bed is my vast world map from Ikea, occupying almost an entire wall. This map has been my constant travel companion since I was little. Beginning with Dad’s stories about his business travels early in his career, this map has taken me to the countries he toured and locals he befriended from Belgium to South Korea to Indonesia.

Through Google Earth’s lens, I’m able to transport myself to any far-flung places without leaving the comfort of my bedroom. I have explored the Philippines, where my mother was born and raised. Her accounts of her upbringing fascinated me growing up, the tropical climate a drastic change from L.A.’s dry, sunny summers. When I showed her the schools she attended, the church where she and her family worshiped every Sunday, and the empty land where her house once stood, she was delighted. I was, too.

I don’t need to set foot in an airport to know every country, city and capital in the world. The knowledge I amassed, from the map in my bedroom to virtual tours, has taught me that not traveling outside my birth country will not define who I am. I pull what I can from my surroundings, whether wandering my neighborhood or following the virtual tour of the Louvre’s Petite Galerie exhibition of founding myths. And there are dozens of UNESCO sites still to see.

I am a globe-trotter. Travel costs may prove too great a financial strain for my parents, but my world map and ingenuity are free. So while my passport pages are empty, my limitless adventures are being vividly stamped in my mind forever.

I was 6 years old.

Waltzing into my room, I had no room to dance. Looking at the floor, I would not be able to convince anyone it is hardwood. Clothes with price tags and unopened toys covered every inch of the ground. Mountains of freebies from convention centers engulfed me every time I entered the room. It was chaos.

Each day, these mountains became mountain ranges. As time passed by, I thought this accumulation would make me better. More items, more wealth and more friends. Having more meant a better life, right?

I waved to my dad at the screen door while I was yawning in jammies that were made authentically from Vietnam. He hopped into the only car to drive eight miles south to sharpen blades for lawn mowers as my mom cared for me, my brother and the house.

And every morning, my mom dropped me off at school on the next fastest transportation: the only electric scooter. Other days, my dad would pick me up and head to the doctor’s as the English-speaking parent before dozing off until his next shift. I cherished my parents’ efforts and actions for me.

When I was 10, my dad was heading into his mid-60s, and he retired. The income cash flow was dripping as my mom joined the work force and slowly gained clients. We celebrated every time a letter came in with government assistance.

We savored all the stuff. Every item made us the richest people on earth. My mom told me stories about when she was younger in Vietnam. She never had new clothes or gifts. She always got hand-me-downs.

I treasured and kept every item as sacred as a pirate’s gold. I felt like I won the lottery by having all this stuff.

Because I knew the most English, I researched Americanized things and how-tos for my parents. With a disastrous house at bay, my mom suggested to me to research how to get a cleaner house. I typed it into the Google search bar, expecting nothing helpful. I went down the rabbit hole, weaving from grease, storage containers, organization and more.

And then, I found this foreign word, minimalism.

Simplifying the number of items in possession to have a tidier home can make people happier. What were these jabberwocky words arranged in this order doing here? Can this end my chaos?

But, I thought more meant better. My treasure was occupying my time and mind. Overflowing piles, boxes and chaos tornadoed around me.

What about the social pressure? What would all my friends think if I didn’t have a lot of things? Would they think I was poor, poorer than I already am? Or worse, could I lose everything in life?

You know what? Let’s just do it. The chaos needs to end.

I slowly start to sort piles and load the car trunk. A part of me vanished at first. As days went by, I felt a weight of possession leave my chest and free me from all of the strings from each item tying me down.

Now, I zoom from assisting my mom with dishes to checking out TED Talks and self-love Instagram reels to working on my random urge to do pottery. The void has been filled with experience, knowledge and gratefulness.

My hands dance as I attempt to take in every single word that emerges from my wandering thoughts. I observe my sleeping plateau and two work space plateaus with a small stack of notebooks and feel content. “I appreciate myself,” I scribbled with one of my five — and only five — writing utensils.

I don’t need to rely on items, wealth and friends to be content. Others’ opinions of my display of wealth are not necessary to me. Without these items gluing me down, I easily settle from place to place. The internet was right. I can experience life now, for new challenges, opportunities and experiences.

Digits. Miles on the odometer, time on a clock. Neon clock face — 4:00 on a Tuesday morning. Driving 25 quick miles to swim practice, then 45 long ones to school. A rushed 11 miles to work. Finally, 9:30 p.m. Shift over — 13 miles home.

Total: 94 miles in 17.5 hours. A typical Tuesday bleeds into a typical week, adding up to a total of over 600 miles. Nearly three hours each day before I add in school, work, swimming and commitments as a brother, as a son.

These miles are unavoidable. Living in a rural farming community, you soon realize that everything is far away.

Being the oldest of five children, a perch I share with my twin sister, I know what my parents have sacrificed to provide a loving and stable life for us. My dad gets up early every morning — working weekends and missing vacations to provide for our family. My mom gave up her career to raise my four siblings and me.

Their sacrifices have formed the foundation of who I am. The miles that I drive, and others that I walk, are a small part of what makes it possible for our family to function, even thrive.

The longer drives lull me into thinking. Goals and ambitions — for tomorrow or 10 years from now.

I often think about what I have and the people around me who have sacrificed to get me where I am today. Sacrifice isn’t giving up or missing out on something. It is making the hard choices that will lead a person to become extraordinary.

Today, my choices are laying the foundation for something extraordinary of my own, shaping me into my future self. My foundation is supported by cornerstones — a big, loving, supportive family; work with meaning; financial independence; self-direction.

At age 2, I received my first wheelbarrow. It was small, tot-sized, but I used it to help with yardwork. Today, I spend weekends planting and maintaining the gardens — a sacrifice of time and a strain on my body.

Beginning with seeds in the greenhouse and continuing through harvest, I enjoy watching the produce grow and reaping the bounty of my work. These gardens provide us with much food. My wheelbarrow is full-sized now, just like the role I play in helping sustain my family.

The miles I walk pushing a wheelbarrow offer one type of support. Those I drive to and from my job as a restaurant dishwasher provide another 20 to 25 hours a week I scrub and rinse, pacing myself to stay ahead of the front of the house.

These hours demand a different type of sacrifice, but offer the promise of financial independence, my ability to save and even invest. I crave stability and dream of a future I can provide for myself. I want to help pay for college, buy a home on the water, maybe even have a boat.

But the miles I drive to swim practice feel different. These are just for me.

Setting goals and working to achieve them empowers me. After an early alarm and my daily decision to sacrifice sleep and free time, the tough morning workouts motivate me to push through obstacles. I can carry these lessons through college, my future career, my personal life.

These miles, hundreds walked and thousands driven, take me to and from the century-old farmhouse we call home. We have expanded it several times to house the seven of us, each new cornerstone marking the sacrifices made to get to that point.

Soon, I will expand my foundation, adding cornerstones uniquely mine to the ones I share with my family. This expansion will be in stages — college, a job, a family of my own — but I know how I will mark them. Miles walked, miles driven, sacrifices made. And I know that with each one, I am building something extraordinary.

Pieces of me live in my kitchen.

An art easel stands sentry nearby with stained paintbrushes and repurposed mugs. The curtains are drawn back, revealing clouds ambling against a sun-streaked sky.

Cherry-red and mint green boxes of tea sit in the cupboards above the sink — Earl Grey, peppermint, jasmine. Peaches sprawl across the counter, next to honeycombs I would suck on during long, oppressive summers. Very Monet, don’t you think? Beautiful, sweet, impressionist.

Yet if you peer beyond the bowl of bananas and crooning stereo, you would find a drawer of flatware. Rusting. Brown. Cheap. I didn’t know I was poor until I noticed the flatware. You can beautify the ugly in all sorts of ways, paint and plaster over all the cracks and holes. But the truth will stick like tar.

It was the autumn of 2019, and my mother was hunched in the kitchen, beaming and bright. “Look,” she beckoned. She handed me a fork and spoon: so shiny I could see my reflection, heavy in my hand and cold to the touch. There were two more pairs on the counter. She had replaced the entire drawer.

“Three hundred dollars,” Mama said proudly. “Two graveyard shifts.”

My mother works two jobs. I save coupons for back-to-school shopping. Why did I take so long to notice? Maybe I wanted to see myself as something other than a stereotype. Another brown body who lives under the umbrella term of low-income, first-generation. Maybe my mother was embarrassed to be another brown body who couldn’t afford a good cutlery set without 20 extra hours.

But I never had to think about it, because she kept the kitchen picturesque, and I never mentioned the bags underneath her eyes. It was some dark, dirty secret we clutched to our chest, kept away from prying eyes. No one should know (not even us).

“Poor” has always been a tainted word, like “homeless” or “beggar.” The generous donate, the indifferent ignore, the unkind scoff, but there is a quiet murmur, an intrusive “this is your fault” inside all of us. That’s why we say “escape poverty” like it’s some monster under our bed, not a symptom of a monstrous society. We are all eager to escape, and when we do, we do not look back.

I have always had a deep longing for more. I was named Jaylen after a basketball player, but I tell people I was named after the blue jay. Inside me, a small bird, like my namesake, was desperately trying to fly. I wanted to leave, because I was ashamed, and by wanting more for myself, I forgot to want more for everyone else.

But standing there, I saw my mother for the first time. I saw the pride in her purchase, her sunken face, how her hands shook and her hair grayed. She worked every day, so I could one day rest. She never kicked up her feet and enjoyed honeycombs on a Saturday afternoon. She loved my future enough to forsake her present.

Each of us has that small bird inside of us, but birds fly in flocks (and together, cages aren’t really cages). The duty of our generation is to ensure the next generation has it a little easier. There is no shame in that weight. There is pride.

We plant seeds so that our daughters and sons can enjoy the flowers. We add semicolons so that our children continue our story.

I work, no longer to escape my community, but to transform it. I distributed hundreds of letters that I and my classmates had written to nursing home residents who were in quarantine during the holidays. I taught computer science and business classes to underprivileged students. I helped underclassmen transition to the turbulent ocean that is high school. I paint murals, drink tea and take birds with broken wings to animal hospitals.

The other day, I bought my mother another set of cutlery that I hope to give her soon. I can finally say I learned how to fly.

Upon opening a high-yield savings account, your bank will likely provide an ATM/banking card to withdraw cash. However, the bank may limit the number of fee-free withdrawals that can be made per month.

Interest Rates and APY

Banks often advertise savings accounts by both the simple interest rate and the annual percentage yield (APY) — a percentage that informs consumers as to how much interest they would earn in an account over a year. Unlike simple interest rates, APYs take compounding — the process by which you earn interest on both your principal and already accrued interest — and the frequency at which it is done into account. Therefore, a product's advertised APY is usually higher than the simple interest rate.

You can sometimes find higher rates with high-yield savings accounts than with money market accounts. However, many money market accounts offer tiered rates, so if you have a larger amount of money to deposit, you may end up earning more interest with a money market account than with a high-yield savings account.

Minimum Balance and Deposit Requirements

Many high-yield savings accounts have no or low minimum balance requirements to open or maintain an account. That means not having to worry about dipping below the requirement to avoid paying fees or losing interest-earning privileges when making a withdrawal.

On the other hand, it's common for money market accounts to have a minimum balance requirement in place. Your bank may also have minimum requirements for making an initial deposit into a brand-new money market account. Money market accounts may also carry higher maintenance fees than high-yield savings accounts — so it’s important to keep an eye on your balance to ensure it stays above the minimum.

Check Writing and Debit Card Access

Some money market accounts have more stringent requirements than high-yield savings accounts regarding minimum balance and deposit requirements. But as a trade-off, they may offer easier access to your funds.

Many money market accounts come with a debit card/banking card that you can use to make withdrawals at ATMs and bank branches. In addition, money market accounts can also offer account holders check-writing privileges. Although you may receive unlimited fee-free ATM withdrawals of your funds, your bank may limit the number of free transactions you can make with your bank issued card or checks.

However, when you open a high-yield savings account, a bank might limit the number of fee-free withdrawals and transactions you can make (typically, six per month). In addition, you may not receive a bank-issued card or checkbook. To use the money in a savings account to pay for goods and services, you may need to transfer it to a linked checking account first.

As you can see, there are differences between high-yield savings accounts and money market accounts. These differences mean that it’s important to make the right choice to ensure your account is right for your unique financial needs. When should you choose a high-yield savings account, and when is a money market account the smarter choice?

When To Opt For A Money Market Account

The easier access to funds that money market accounts often offer may make them a better choice if you need easy access to your money. Because many money market accounts come with check-writing abilities and debit or bank cards, it's relatively easy to pay directly for goods or services. By comparison, with a high-yield savings account, it’s typically necessary to transfer the money to a checking account first. This easier, quick access makes money market accounts a better choice if you’re saving money for an emergency fund.

In addition, money market accounts may be a better choice for individuals saving larger amounts of money due to minimum balance requirements to avoid fees and earn interest. And because many money market accounts offer tiered interest rates, you may earn more from this type of account if you have a sizable amount of money to deposit.

When To Opt For A High-Yield Savings Account

With typically low or no minimum balance requirements, high-yield savings accounts are a better choice for individuals who don't have large account balances. This may make them a better choice for those new to saving.

Plus, because these accounts usually don't offer easy access to funds via a debit or bank card or checks, high-yield savings accounts may prove a better choice if you plan on saving for a long-term goal, such as retirement or a new home.

Alternatives To Money Market and High-Yield Savings Accounts

If neither a money market account nor a high-yield savings account fits your needs, check out these banking alternatives:

• Checking accounts: Most checking accounts don't earn interest — and those that do typically earn a much lower percentage than what is found with a savings account. However, with a typical checking account, there's no limit to the number of transactions or withdrawals you can make per month. That makes them a smarter choice if you need frequent access to your money and aren't concerned about earning interest.
• Traditional savings accounts: Not all banks offer high-yield savings accounts or offer them only to people in certain locations. If your bank doesn't offer a high-yield savings account, but you want to save money for the long term, consider a traditional savings account.
• Certificates of deposit: Many certificates of deposit (CDs) earn interest rates on par with or even greater than what you'd find with a high-yield savings account or money market account. However, in exchange for the relatively high rate, your money will be locked in the account until it reaches maturity. That means you won't be able to withdraw cash without incurring a penalty until the CD matures.

How writing a letter to your future self can help you set—and achieve—long-term goals, experts say

Creating and maintaining the kind of habits that will benefit you in the long-term can be a challenge. Just a month into 2024, 41% of Americans who'd made New Year's resolutions had kept just some or none of them at all, according to the Pew Research Center .

But there are practices that can help. Ari Wallach, executive director of Longpath , which helps foster long-term thinking in organizations and individuals, outlined a couple of practices for changing present-day behavior on a recent episode of the "Masters of Scale: Rapid Response" podcast.

One of them is to "write a letter to your future self," he told podcast host Bob Safian. "The research shows that it's not about receiving that letter but it's actually about writing that letter that changes how you think about yourself and your role in future shaping."

Mental health professionals agree that there's a benefit to this practice.

Writing a letter to your future self "helps people concentrate on their goals," says Gail Purvis, clinician in private practice and at Weill Cornell Medicine's department of psychiatry. That's because "putting pen to paper … emphasizes the importance of thinking about your future and what you want," she says.

The research shows that it's not about receiving that letter but it's actually about writing that letter. Ari Wallach Executive director, Longpath

The most effective way of doing this is not to set concrete goals, such as "by now you should have purchased a house and gotten married and had two kids," she says. Rather, Purvis would encourage people to approach their future selves with genuine hopes and compassion for them.

Try writing statements like "I hope the work that you have decided to do is meaningful and pleasurable to you" and "I hope that you have friends who love you" and who you love just as much. These kinds of statements won't make your future self feel guilty if certain goals have not been accomplished.

Wallach doesn't emphasize the importance of receiving the letter as much as crafting it, but Purvis says there's benefit to this as well.

Reading your letter down the line "increases a lot of self-awareness," she says, because it can help you get to know yourself better and see, over time, what you set out to do and what you accomplished. Ultimately, "the more you know yourself and the more you have compassion for yourself, the better decisions you'll make for yourself and for your loved ones."

Write that letter to your future self and keep it safe for as long as you want to wait to open it. You can also ask a family member to hold on to it, set it as an email that will get sent in the future or try using a service like FutureMe , which lets you write a letter and sends it for you.

How to make money wine writing in 10 (not so easy) steps

Previously, I wrote about the standard model for making money as a freelance wine writer . Here, I provide an alternative path, or, at minimum, a variation. This pathway includes most of the major steps you need to consider if you want to start a career writing about wine (or writing about whatever).

The first step is the easiest. Create a site that is all your own. This can be done for free on a variety of platforms.

You could consider naming the site as its own brand, as I have done with Northwest Wine Report. Alternately, you could brand the site to your own name.

Biden's latest student-loan forgiveness plan brings questions for borrowers: What to know

Some student loan borrowers may not take advantage of President Joe Biden's final plan to eliminate debt for millions because they don't know if they're eligible, don't understand the process or think it is a scam.

On Monday, Biden promised student loan relief by the fall with his final proposal. This plan comes less than a year after the Supreme Court blocked his initial attempt.

Under the proposed plan, more than 4 million borrowers who have been paying down their student loans for 20 years or more could have their debt completely canceled, according to the White House. The plan would also help more than 10 million borrowers by giving them $5,000 or more in relief, Biden's administration said.

Biden also aims to help 23 million borrowers by eliminating interest past the original loan amounts.

How to apply for student loan forgiveness?

If eligible for debt relief, borrowers should periodically check their emails for updates from their student loan servicers and Federal Student Aid .

While Biden works on his final proposal, eligible borrowers can apply on the Federal Student Aid website for other kinds of relief, including if they have a disability , work for a nonprofit , or are a teacher , government employee or medical professional .

Borrowers repaying their loans for 20 to 25 years can apply for income-driven repayment (IDR) loan forgiveness.

Several other loan forgiveness options are available on the Federal Student Aid website, but borrowers should check if they're eligible by looking closely at each selection. Victims of forgery, borrowers who declared bankruptcy and Perkins loan borrowers are examples of individuals eligible for forgiveness.

What document explains your rights and responsibilities as a federal student loan borrower?

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a binding legal document borrowers must sign before they receive a federal student loan promising they'll repay the loans and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education, according to Federal Student Aid.

Student loan debt: Averages and other statistics in 2024

There is one MPN for direct subsidized/unsubsidized loans and a different MPN for direct PLUS loans. All MPNs can be signed electronically.

"You may receive more than one loan under an MPN over a period of up to 10 years to pay for your or your child’s educational costs, as long as the school is authorized to use the MPN in this way and chooses to do so," the Federal Student Aid website says.

Am I eligible for student loan relief?

By checking their emails, borrowers typically receive messages explaining whether they're eligible for relief and what type they can apply for.

If not signed up for emails, borrowers can visit the Federal Student Aid website and check their eligibility by hovering over the "loan forgiveness" tab and clicking "types of loan forgiveness."

Once the borrower clicks "types of loan forgiveness," they will be taken to a page showing the available relief options. Borrowers then can check their eligibility.

Be aware of student loan scams

Federal Student Aid warns borrowers to be aware of scams because they "might be contacted by a company saying they will help you get loan discharge, forgiveness, cancellation, or debt relief for a fee."

"You never have to pay for help with your federal student aid," the office's website says. "Make sure you work only with the U.S. Department of Education, the office of Federal Student Aid, and our loan servicers, and never reveal your personal information or account password to anyone."

The emails to borrowers come from [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected].

Borrowers can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1-877-382-4357 or by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Student loan scam involving 'Mission Hills Federal'

The Federal Trade Commission announced March 13 that it is sending more than $4.1 million in refunds to 27,584 borrowers who "lost money to student loan debt relief scammers who lured consumers with fake loan forgiveness claims and pocketed their money," according to a news release.

The scheme, which "tricked students into paying hundreds to thousands of dollars" since 2014, went by many names including Mission Hills Federal, Federal Direct Group, National Secure Processing and The Student Loan Group.

The group made the borrowers pay "illegal upfront fees and pretended to lower consumers’ monthly student loan payments," according to the FTC. The operators also deceived borrowers into sending their monthly student loan payments directly to them by "falsely claiming to take over the servicing of the consumers’ loans," the agency said.

"In reality, few payments were actually applied to consumers’ student loans and in many cases, none at all," the FTC said. "Instead, the defendants kept consumers’ money for themselves."
