16 Effective Persuasive Language Techniques

Persuasive language is the language being used when convincing others for something. It can be seen and heard around you every day. You’ll see it in TV commercials, social media, magazines, billboards, and any other medium where advertisement campaigns are placed. While you may think persuasive language is only for the ones who communicate with the public to convince, it is actually helpful to learn it. At one point or another, you may have used it without noticing it, and you may also need to use it in the future. Persuasive language can be employed when you want others to believe your viewpoints and conclusions, accept your facts, and get someone to take a certain action. It can be done verbally, nonverbal, or even written. To make your message easier and more compelling, different techniques can be used. Your claim is your main point. It is the gist of your argument. When delivering a persuasive message, state your claim as clearly as possible. This will enable you to get your point across vividly and have your message be understood by your audience correctly. It also ensures that there is only one interpretation thus prevents leading to other interpretations. 

“I’d like you to eat dark chocolates because it is a healthier option compared to other sweet foods.”

2. Repetition

To emphasize your point, and reinforce an argument, you can do repetition. As you keep on repeating words or phrases, it creates a familiarity with your main point or message. This eventually stays in the mind of your audience thus making your message more memorable. To do this, choose the key points that you want to emphasize. Keep on repeating those words throughout your text or speech, however, remember to do it judiciously. If you overdo it, people will think the content of your message is redundant. Do it fluidly by repeating your main point in different ways. You can put it on your details, evidence, examples, and summary.

“You can easily choose from the alternatives that I offered you. Both of them are easy solutions.”

3. Colloquial Language

Using colloquial language is effective when persuading others because it makes your message clearer to them. Since it is common for people to use it, they will understand your point easily. Your audience can identify with you and feel as if you are on the same wavelength as them. Moreover, it sounds more friendly and can make your point appear more practical and realistic. To do this you can use slang when delivering your message. 

“If you follow their demands then you’re a bunch of half-wits.”

4. Jargon words

While we are often told not to use jargon or complex terminology as much as possible, using them in the persuasive language is effective. This is helpful if your audience is professional or intellectual. Using jargon words and formal language can make you sound knowledgeable thus making your point sound reasonable and rational. 

“Share your advocacy to your clients to guide them to be aware of value-based purchasing.”

5. Emotive appeals

Engaging people’s feelings is another technique used to convince others. Most of the time, emotions become the motivation for why people do things. When people emotionally get in touch with you and are swayed by their emotions, they are more likely to agree with you. Through carefully choosing your words, you can evoke emotion from them. 6. Inclusive language

Inclusive language is a technique where you try to create an impression that you and your audience are on the same side and share the same viewpoint. This is effective in persuasive language because you position your audience to agree with you by showing that you belong in a team, campaign, or project that they can be part of. To employ inclusive language use ‘us’, ‘we’, and ‘our’.

“We are in this together.”

“By doing your part we can mitigate the effect of this virus crisis.”

7. Rhetorical question

Rhetorical questions are questions that are asked but not required to be answered. They are often used to get the audience’s attention, imply certain answers, emphasize a point, or guide audiences to draw certain conclusions. When a rhetorical question is asked, an obvious answer is already posed to a particular issue. You just ask to make the audience think about the same question and realize that your point is rational, and to disagree with it seems foolish.

“Who wouldn’t want to progress to live in comfort?”

“Should we allow this malpractice to continue?”

8. Hyperbole

Hyperbole is the use of exaggeration. It is often used to make a point or emphasize it. Overstating can be effective as your point can be viewed as greater than it actually is and more urgent and important. Using exaggeration can make two things, to communicate value, or make the situation seem worse. By describing an extreme version of events, it creates a dramatic impact. This provokes strong emotional responses from your audience which makes them more likely to accept your viewpoint.  However, when using exaggerations, make sure that it is done appropriately and can be backed up by proof. 

“They are selling the best ice cream in the country.”

“They can do it in one second.”

9. Anecdotal evidence

An anecdote is a short story involving real-life events. It is used to illustrate a point and simplify complex issues. It triggers imagination thus makes your point more vivid and relatable thus keeps your audience engaged. By providing real stories your persuasive message sounds more realistic, credible, and interesting. It is effective especially when backed up by facts.

Bias is providing only a partial or one side of an issue to influence others. It is commonly used to highlight good reasoning to motives and ignore counter-arguments. To make this effective, state your claim and biases then explain why this one-sidedness helps and makes sense to your audience. 

“Our product is environmentally-friendly thus assures you that it is safe, sustainable and value for money.”

“The newly released phone is the best in the market today.”

11. Expert opinion

Quoting expert’s opinions can help your persuasion message sound more credible. Not only does it add substance but also puts more weight on your argument. When people see that experts agree with you, people are influenced and believe that it would be rational to agree with you. Do this by including quotes that refer to experts who agree with your viewpoint. Make sure that the personalities you will quote are respectable and well-known to make your claim stronger and believable.

“Dr. Murphy’s extensive research on the virus proves that it can be transmitted via… “

12. Facts and statistical evidence

Add weight to your argument by incorporating statistics and facts into your persuasive message. This is effective especially to an analytical audience. Including facts and statistics in your message shows that you researched and investigated your claim. It makes you appear that you know what you are talking about. Your message will be seen as valid since facts and statistics are unquestionable and irrefutable. Make sure that when using statistics it is accurate and taken from reliable sources.

“According to the survey presented by ABC statistics, 90% are… ”

“A recent survey conducted by ABC Statistics found that…”

13. Generalization

Generalization is a statement that suggests that what is true for some is true for the majority. It is often used to simplify an issue, and to prove that your claim is logical because the effect is experienced by many. This is effective if your audience stance is already on the same side as yours, but uncompelling to those that have doubts and proofs to disprove it. If you are going to employ it, use generalizations that tell commonly held beliefs that many accept or support. 

“Teenagers today are more expressive, vocal, and bolder.”

“The locals are skillful and entrepreneurial.”

14. Comparison

Comparison is a technique where you compare two things to present a point. It is another way to simplify complex issues. It can guide your audience to see the connection of things thus will help in making your audience agree with your point. Similes, metaphors, and analogies are often used to illustrate comparisons. 

“The shade of the newly launched lipstick is like red roses.” 

“Our fabric is as soft as cotton.”

A pun uses homophones, homonyms, or rhymes to play with words. The use of words that sound similar is intended to suggest a double meaning. This other meaning often represents a positive or negative connotation that influences the audience’s viewpoint or response on the issue. It is effective because its humor catches the attention and interest of your audience. 

“She is returning the dress she purchased because she is experiencing post-traumatic dress syndrome.”

16. Clichés

A cliché is an overused phrase. Although it is normally discouraged to use cliché, it can be effective when delivering your persuasive messages. Clichés allow you to communicate your viewpoints quickly. Since the expressions you are using are familiar and uncomplicated your audience can easily grasp and understand your point. This enables them to easily accept your idea. 

“We are doing our best to resolve it but we are still uncertain about the outcome. Time can only tell.”

Repetition: There is a reason why advertisements and commercials are so repetitive – repetition works! Students can use this knowledge to their advantage in their persuasive writing. It is challenging to get the reader to fully agree with the writer’s opinion if they don’t fully understand it. Saying the same thing in various ways ensures the reader gets many bites at the ‘understanding’ cherry.

Repetition Example: “The use of plastic bags is not only bad for the environment, but it is also bad for our economy. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, meaning they will not decompose and will continue to take up space in landfills. Plastic bags are also not recyclable, meaning they will not be reused and will instead end up in landfills. Plastic bags are not only bad for the environment, but they are also bad for our economy as they are costly to dispose of and take up valuable space in landfills.”

In this example, the phrase “not only bad for the environment but also bad for our economy” is repeated multiple times to reinforce the idea that plastic bags are not just a problem for the environment but also the economy. While some may argue that uniforms stifle creativity and individuality, the benefits of uniforms far outweigh the potential drawbacks. It is important to consider the impact of uniforms on the school as a whole, rather than focusing solely on individual expression.”

In this example, the writer presents the opposing viewpoint (uniforms stifle creativity and individuality) and then provides counterarguments to refute it. By doing so, the writer can strengthen their own argument and present a more convincing case for why uniforms should be worn in school.

A Call to Action: A staple of advertising, a call to action can also be used in persuasive writing. When employed, it usually forms part of the conclusion section of the essay and asks the reader to do something, such as recycle, donate to charity, sign a petition etc.

“They had eaten it during a weekend trip to the high country and died horribly .”

“…stop foxes being culled in this barbaric manner. Use your voice, they said, spread the news and stop an inhumane practice.”

Makes the reader feel sorry for the animals who eat the bait and builds a case for a ban on the poison.

The word “barbaric” makes the reader feel like this is uncivilized. The word “inhumane” has a powerful effect on the reader convincing them that it is cruel.

In English, you will often be asked to write an essay about how writers or speakers have used language to persuade.

An introduction to an argument analysis essay describes the issue generally, the author’s contention and tone. When remembering what to include in the introduction to an argument analysis essay, you can use the acronym FATCAT. 

  • Form.  What is the form of the piece of writing? An opinion piece? Letter to the editor? Speech?
  • Author.  Who wrote the piece? What is their involvement in the issue?
  • Title.  Make sure you include the title somewhere in your introduction. 
  • Contention.  What is the writer’s point of view?
  • Audience.  Who is the intended audience of the article?
  • Tone.  What tone does the writer adopt?

Here is an example argument analysis about an article about poisoning foxes:

There has recently been considerable controversy over the use of 1080 fox bait to control Victoria’s fox population. In his opinion article ‘They’re pests but cruelty is inexcusable’, writer Dmitri Kakmi argues in a logical and, at times, emotive tone that fox baiting is cruel and inhumane, attempting to persuade both Victorians and lawmakers that we must change this barbaric practice.

Body paragraph

In the body paragraphs of an argument analysis essay, you will identify an argument, then discuss the persuasive techniques that a writer uses to support that argument. Always make reference to how different techniques make the reader feel or react.

We use the AAPEE structure when writing about this article.

  • Argument,  Identify an argument.
  • Analysis.  Analyse how the writer makes the argument overall.
  • Persuasive technique.  Identify a persuasive technique used to make this argument.
  • Example.  Given an example of that technique
  • Effect.  Explain its effect on the audience.

You may repeat the PEE part as many times as you like!

O’Brien argues that parents should trust the professionalism of doctors, allowing teens to have private medical appointments. In making this argument, O’Brien recognises that, when it comes to their children, parents are likely to be swayed by the advice of experts, which means she approaches this in a logical manner relying heavily on evidence and the suggestion that parents should trust medical professionals. She supports this argument with the use of evidence, referring to “a new research report from Victorian doctors” which indicates children should have the right to private medical appointments. This use of expert opinion suggests that O’Brien’s contention has widespread support by a trusted body of professionals and her use of this evidence positions parents to contemplate whether their right to know surpasses their children’s health. Furthermore, O’Brien uses the positive connotations of the word “professional” when she states there are times when parents should “defer to other professionals whose job it is to protect our kids”. The word ‘professionals’ has connotations of experiencing and training, further emphasising their credibility in the eyes of parents who might be wary of allowing their teenagers to have private medical appointments.  

Writing a conclusion

Analyse the writer’s conclusion. Conclude by discussing how the writer makes their final argument. Why does the article end in that way? The last paragraph will often be a final plea to the reader, a call to action or a dramatic statement intended to linger in their reader’s mind.

This persuasive writing guide for GCSE is designed to support teachers and students of CCEA English Language Unit 1 Writing for Purpose and Audience. Despite the title ‘Writing for Purpose and Audience’, the task is assessing students’ ability to write persuasively.

What is persuasive writing?

Persuasive writing is a form of non-fiction writing which aims to get the reader to agree with the writer’s point of view. Writing persuasively helps students to defend an argument, an important skill for academic study, if they go on to university. It also helps to build their confidence in formulating a point of view.

Persuasive writing can also be referred to as argumentative writing or discursive writing.

What exam boards require students to do persuasive writing at GCSE?

I have mentioned already, this guide is written for my own CCEA GCSE students. 

CCEA’s English Language Unit 1 Task 1 is called ‘writing for purpose and audience’. It asks students to write a persuasive response to an unseen topic for a specific audience. The task is worth 87 marks (there are 150 marks available for the whole paper).

WJEC’s GCSE English Language Unit 3  Section B asks students to complete two persuasive writing tasks. Each one is worth 20 marks, so 40 in total (there are 80 marks available for the whole paper).

Will students know the topic, purpose and audience in advance of the exam?

For the first time in 2023, CCEA released Advanced Information for a number of subjects, including English Language GCSE. For Unit 1, CCEA told us that the audience would be your classmates. That’s it! Not much to go on! You can  look at the document here . 

WJEC also released similar information for their candidates, indicating that the focus for Unit 3 would be an article for the first task and a talk for the second. You can  check the document here .

Where do we see persuasive writing?

In the real world, we are surrounded by persuasion. We see it on billboards, in advertisements, in politics, and in many aspects of our everyday lives, such as at home or at school. If you have ever tried to convince someone to do or give you something, then you are already more than a beginner.

Students will be familiar with the language of media and advertising from KS3 study. They tend to do well with this style of writing as they are using lively, exaggerated expressions and cultivating a positive relationship with their reader/audience. It can also be an emotive topic: students feel quite passionate about the topics that come up.

What topics could come up in GCSE persuasive writing?

In general, the topics students are asked to write about are topics they are familiar with. CCEA do not expect students to have memorised facts and statistics about a range of topics. Instead, they must write from their own ideas, opinions and experiences. Here are some past paper topics, and a few more that I think would be great to give to students:

  • Should school uniforms be mandatory?
  • Should students call their teachers by their first name?
  • Should the whole world go vegan?
  • Should the voting age be lowered to 16?
  • Is social media harmful to young people?
  • Should the legal drinking age be raised?
  • Should homework be abolished?
  • Is artificial intelligence ethical?
  • Should junk food be banned from schools?
  • Is climate change our responsibility to fix?
  • Is technology making us more or less social?

Teaching ideas for persuasive writing

  • Get students talking: debate the topics
  • Double up the same written practice tasks with speaking and listening assessment (individual)
  • Use a  random name selector (try this one)  to select topics and get students to persuade their partners for 30 seconds
  • Watch famous  persuasive speeches – try this site.  Annotate and discuss what works. This is a great lead into Unit 3 Study of Spoken Language CA

What do students find difficult about persuasive writing?

1. getting the right tone.

A big part of the CCEA assessment is matching the style and tone of your writing to the audience. Sometimes the audience is your classmates but it could also be the examiner, the school community or a specific situation, for example a Primary 6 class. Students need to vary their tone, vocabulary and content to suit the audience. 

I find that some students struggle to balance the need for formality (it’s an English exam) with a casual tone (to suit their classmates, for example). This takes practice for most students.

2. Writing accurately

As with all written tasks, students are assessed on a range of skills, but approximately a third of the marks in the CCEA, and half in WJEC, are awarded for accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure, etc. 

3. Using a range of language devices to make the writing lively

A big part of the assessment of quality in this task is in the students’ ability to manipulate language to persuade. There are many mnemonics for persuasive language devices. Here’s mine: PASS ME A FOREST.

4. Developing detail

This task requires students to plan and take a well structured approach. The written response needs an introduction, main paragraphs which outline the main arguments and a conclusion. Each of the main paragraphs needs a clear point/topic sentence, giving the response a range of persuasive ideas. The CCEA task is allocated 55 minutes. There is an expectation of length: three sides of exam paper are included in the exam booklet. The best responses will be concise enough not to waffle on, but well developed enough to use the space to fully convince the reader.
