For a variety of reasons, GRE test-takers often have mistaken impressions about whether the Analytical Writing measure matters and how much it matters. So, in this article, we’ll bust some myths about GRE Analytical Writing and answer the most common questions about the Analytical Writing score.

To start, let’s review what exactly GRE Analytical Writing entails.

The Analytical Writing measure is the first section you’ll see on your GRE . This section contains one essay tasks, which you have 30 minutes to complete.

The Issue task asks you to analyze an issue. The essay prompt presents an opinion about a topic of general interest. You’ll have to craft an essay responding to that opinion, with your own reasoning and examples supporting your stance. Whether your response agrees or disagrees with the presented opinion does not affect your essay score. The point is to pick whatever position allows you to craft as logical, coherent, and convincing an essay as possible.

The Analytical Writing measure does not require you to have particular subject matter knowledge. All of the information you need to write an effective response will appear in the essay prompt, be common knowledge, or be things that you happen to know and can utilize in your essay.

You will write your essays using the basic word processing program provided by the GRE test platform. That program features common functions such as Cut , Paste , Delete , and Undo , but does not feature automated spelling or grammar check.

So, to allow time for a human to read your essays, you receive your Analytical Writing score once your official scores are posted to your ets.org account. The score you receive is on a 0-6 scale, in half-point increments.

Now, when test-takers hear that the GRE Analytical Writing score is separate, generally one of the first questions they ask is, is GRE writing a part of the GRE overall score? The simple answer is no. Your GRE total score reflects your performance in the Quant and Verbal sections of the exam. Since you receive your total score immediately upon completion of your exam, before your essay has been scored, it has no effect on your overall GRE score. Because the Analytical Writing score is not factored into the total GRE score, and because test-takers don’t receive their Analytical Writing scores on test day, many GRE students assume that the essay score doesn’t really matter. However, depending on the graduate program to which you’re applying, your Analytical Writing score may be an important part of how admissions views your GRE scores. Let’s discuss.

Does the Writing Score Matter to Graduate Schools?

Test-takers often mistakenly assume that graduate schools don’t really care about the GRE essay score. The general thinking is that, since the Analytical Writing score is not part of the total GRE score, it doesn’t matter.

Furthermore, test-takers applying to programs in certain fields may assume that writing skills are unimportant for those programs. Or they may think that as long as their application essays are well-written, admissions will “already know” that they have writing skills.

It’s true that programs in some fields expect higher Analytical Writing scores than others. For instance, even top Engineering programs generally don’t expect Analytical Writing scores as high as those that a good Journalism or English program wants to see. That said, even more math-focused programs may look askance at a very low essay score.

So, this begs the question, what is a good Analytical Writing score for the GRE?

What Is a Good Analytical Writing Score on the GRE?

Analytical Writing is no different from the other GRE sections in that particular section scores matter more for some programs than for others.

Let’s take our earlier example of an Engineering vs. Journalism program. The graduate program in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon, a top 5 Engineering school, reports that the average Analytical Writing score of admitted students is 4.0. NYU’s master’s in Journalism program, on the other hand, reports that its students have an average Analytical Writing score of 5.0.

Of course, this disparity is no surprise. Advanced writing skills are central to a student’s ability to perform at a high level in a Journalism program. That said, a 4.0 average is still pretty good for a “math-centric” program such as Engineering, right?

In other words, it’s a mistake to assume that, because a program is not centered on verbal or writing skills, any Analytical Writing score will do. Would you feel super confident applying to the Mechanical Engineering program at Carnegie Mellon with a 2.5 Analytical Writing score? A 3.0?

The moral of the story is that it’s always best to research the GRE Analytical Writing score averages at the specific programs you’re interested in. Those averages will tell you how important Analytical Writing is for you. If your field of study is more verbal-focused, chances are the Analytical Writing score will matter more than if your field is more math-focused. However, even if you’re applying to math-focused programs, assuming that the Writing score doesn’t matter at all is a mistake.

Research the Analytical Writing score averages at the programs you’re interested in to determine how much the Writing section matters for admissions.

Highly ranked programs may require pretty impressive scores in every GRE section.

For instance, UC Berkeley’s graduate program in Psychology, ranked #1 by U.S. News , reports that the 2020 cohort of admitted students had the following average GRE scores:

It’s difficult to look at those averages and say that the program cares much more about one GRE section vs. another, or that any of the sections isn’t “important.”

Keep this example in mind when researching score averages at your desired programs, because in some cases, you may find data only on GRE Quant and Verbal scores, not Analytical Writing scores. In those cases, you’ll want to consider the program rankings. Are you looking at very highly ranked programs that will want to see fairly high scores in every GRE section?

Additionally, you can look for Analytical Writing score averages at similarly ranked programs, which will probably have score expectations similar to those of the programs you’re interested in. Furthermore, you can always reach out to admissions at your desired programs to try to get further insight into what kinds of GRE essay scores they look for from applicants.

If Analytical Writing score averages aren’t available for your desired programs, look at averages at similarly ranked programs and consider contacting admissions for further insight.

Let’s say you’re not applying to a top-ranked school. Or, you’ve determined that Analytical Writing is the least emphasized GRE section for admissions at your desired programs. Even in those cases, you should be aware that there are sharp drops in the percentile rankings associated with Analytical Writing scores below a certain point.

Let’s take a look at the latest Analytical Writing percentile rankings, per ETS , as of this writing. Note that ETS reports that the average Analytical Writing score among all GRE test-takers is 3.6.

Notice that the differences in percentile rankings among the upper scores are not that great. However, as we approach and fall below the average Analytical Writing score, the percentile rankings quickly plummet.

So, while the difference between scoring, say, 3.5 and 3.0 may not seem that significant to many test-takers, going from “around average” to a 13th percentile ranking may seem pretty darn significant to admissions.

Given the steep drops we see in percentile rankings associated with below-average Analytical Writing scores, I think it’s generally wise to aim for an Analytical Writing score of at least 3.5, even for math-focused programs. That way, you avoid those really low percentile rankings.

Remember, you don’t want to give admissions the impression that you didn’t care enough to even try on your GRE essays. And of course, the higher the Analytical Writing averages at your desired programs, the higher you should aim.

Generally speaking, test-takers should try to at least hit the worldwide average Analytical Writing score of 3.5, to avoid very low percentile rankings.

One very common question I hear from GRE students, particularly those applying to programs that emphasize Quant, is whether it’s okay to skip the Analytical Writing section of the GRE.

For most GRE test-takers, the answer to this question will be no. Most graduate schools want applicants submitting GRE scores to have taken the entire GRE, not just parts of it.

So, unless your desired programs explicitly state that they don’t consider GRE Writing scores, you definitely should not skip Analytical Writing. Furthermore, even if a program states on its website that Writing scores are not required or considered, it’s a smart idea to contact admissions directly to confirm that policy. You don’t want an avoidable slip-up such as skipping Analytical Writing to cause any problems with your application.

Do not skip the GRE Writing unless you have confirmed with admissions that Analytical Writing scores are not factored into admissions decisions.

All things considered, most GRE test-takers have to complete the Analytical Writing section. Furthermore, many (if not most) need to aim for an Analytical Writing score that is at least average or better than average.

Fortunately, preparing for Analytical Writing does not have to take a huge chunk out of your GRE prep time. When it comes to the GRE essays, a little preparation goes a long way — even more reason not to neglect Analytical Writing! Just taking a few days to do the following could mean the difference between a mediocre Analytical Writing score and a top-notch one:

Review the kinds of prompts you could see on your exam .
Solidify a basic outline to follow for your essay.
Practice writing an essay or two.

Alright, let’s go a little bit into the criteria involved in evaluating the GRE essay. When they’re assessing the quality of your writing, the testers – the ones who score your GRE Analytical Writing samples (essays) – will be taking into account four skills. One, the content of your essay . That is your ability to present a cogent, persuasive relevant essay – Relevant ideas and arguments with sound reasoning and supporting examples.

By that we mean that your reasoning is what’s most important. Your logic has to be in place . Whenever you make a claim, you have to support it with an example. Don’t just make an open statement saying “I disagree with the claim technology is very bad for us”.

You can’t stop right there. You have to elaborate on why you think technology is bad for you, why you feel that this is not efficient and further you need to support it with irrefutable logic.

Examples are great because they do both at the same time. You don’t have to use very complex words in the GRE essays to get a decent score.

The important thing to note when it comes to vocabulary is that if you are under confident about any particular word, don’t use it.

Look into the ways to improve your vocabulary and master in it.

The standard is any person who is an expert on the language in which you have written the general essay will be able to tell a mistake apart very easily. So even if you’re a little under confident don’t use it.

They are not looking for high vocabulary or complex words, they’re looking for logic, reasoning and clarity in expression . So use the words that you know very well and try to express ideas in the clearest possible way.

The next most important thing is organization. Not only do you need to have your reasoning and your examples in place, you need to organize your ideas in a way that builds on your previous ideas well , in a way that naturally takes the reader from point A to point B to Point C and to your conclusion.

By the time they reach the end they should be nodding their heads and saying “yes, I completely agree.” In order to do that you need to have a good structure in mind. Of course, next on the list is language.

Yes, you do have to be a little bit a little careful about your language because they are looking for some sense of fluency with language. Your word choice, your word usage, your sentence structures – these are things that you should get some confidence over before you attempt to write a GRE essay.

Don’t unnecessarily make your sentences long-winded or complex because you think they’re expecting that. Grammar is also something they’re going to look at a little closely.

It’s okay if you make a handful of errors in one essay but the repeat errors of a particular type will really stand out. If you have a subject verb agreement problem in your first paragraph but they don’t see another one in the rest of the essay, it’s not going to be a real issue they’re not going to mark you down for that.

How are the Essays Scored?

They’re going to look at all of these aspects – the strength of your argument, the relevance of your examples, your grammar and finally combine all of that to get your score. It’s also important to remember that each GRE essay of the analytical writing section is evaluated twice. Once by a human reader, the other is by a software called an ‘e-rater’ .

This was developed by ETS – the people who made the GRE exam and it’s actually used to monitor the human reader. So the e-rater also gives an evaluation and a score and if the two scores agree with one another then the human score is final.

If they disagree, then a second human score is obtained so there’s a chance that your essay may even be read a third time and that final score is an average of the two humans.

The e-rater score is never your final score , it’s just to test whether the human score sounds appropriate. They’re going through a lot of trouble to assess how good your essay is.

Now let’s talk about how the GRE essays are scored. Each of these essays are scored in two different ways . One – it’s evaluated by a trained human reader . There is going to be a real person reading your essays so make it as legible as possible.

Try to avoid grammatical mistakes, spelling errors. They can see it. They’re going to grade each of the essays and give it a score out of six . The final score is going to be an average of these two scores.

They don’t give anything in decimal points, it’s always going to be a whole number and the final score may have the decimal point of five at best. That’s how you are scored. So your issue received a score of five and your argument a four, then your AWA score overall would be a 4.5.

Note that the scoring is holistic so what they’re looking for is overall quality. The essay as a whole should be quite good for you to receive a reasonably good score like a 4.

It’s okay if you’ve made a few grammatical mistakes , it’s okay if your content is not 100% perfect but say you do averagely well across all of these, then you can get a pretty decent score .

Now if the grammar is really really horrible but you have great content you still have some chances of scoring decently. Content has the highest value . That said, if it’s really hard for them to even get through one of your sentences, that’s not going to help either. So focus on covering all four of these areas – your content, your organization, your grammar and language .

What is Good GRE Writing score?

Even though GRE Analytical Writing has two different sections, the score you get is a combined which makes it more reliable. One of the important factors that determines your good GRE AWA score is the field of study you wanted to pursue.

Time Management for the AWA

The next big question that comes to mind is “how do I manage my time?”. You have 30 minutes each to write both essays. How do you break it up into chunks? How do you deal with each part of this task well? Here are a few GRE analytical writing tips we recommend.

As always, we suggest you spend the first couple of minutes reading your topic carefully and understanding the prompt.

The reason we say this dedicatedly is because a lot of learners personally tend to read the prompt very quickly and think “oh gosh I have to write an essay” and then rush and start writing. Don’t do this.

We’ve seen students make very big mistakes or errors in their judgment because they rush to try to write the actual essay . It’s important to understand the essay prompt and the argument first. You may even miss a really big key word and completely misunderstand what the prompt is about.

In fact we’ve seen students miss key words which mean the exact opposite of what they’ve understood. Take your time to read carefully and spend these couple of minutes being really focused here.

The next two to four minutes is going to be spent on reading the prompt again. Those of you who don’t like reading again please get that out of your system for the entire GRE AWA. Everything hinges on you reading carefully and reading maybe even multiple times to make sure you really understood what you’re reading.

This is where you begin to jot down your points and examples as they come to your mind. The moment you lay your eyes on any particular topic ideas will come flooding into your mind. Now is the time you take to quickly note them down.

It’s okay if you use short forms, whatever you can do as quickly as possible. For those of you who are not comfortable with typing please get a lot of practice as it will be needed for the AWA. The next 15 minutes is the most important. 15 minutes is smack in the middle so that you have enough time to really wrap it up. This is when you write a draft.

For those of you who are not accustomed to following the proper writing technique every piece of writing that you do has an all-important drafting stage . This means it is not the final piece.

Type up your draft, use the points and examples you came up with, jot things down, even put new things that hit you at this time but you have to do it within these 15 minutes because next you only have a few more minutes to really develop new points and clean things up.

This is the kind of thing that gives your essay flow. It makes the reader aware of your flow of thought, of your flow of reasoning.

Transitions are a huge part of organizing your essay and we strongly recommend taking a few minutes to get comfortable with these. The reason the last three minutes are especially important is because we really take it seriously as a part of the writing process. You’re not allowed to not do anything additional these last three minutes.

You must read your entire essay, check for mistakes and typos and see if you need to make any quick changes. At this time you make no additions or subtractions, just edit and make sure you clean it up.

GRE Writing Practice:

Start practising the essays and schedule an hour in a day to write one argument essay and one issue essay. While writing, make yourself and the reader clear on what side of the argument you are standing. Don’t let the reader assume it.

Take up the high score GRE essay samples and compare your essays with them. Go through the differences like number of paragraphs, sentence structure, vocabulary and strong evidences to support your argument. By following these GRE writing tips you can aim for 5+ in GRE analytical writing score.

Summarizing the AWA

About word limits – it’s not the biggest and most important thing of concern here in the GRE analytical writing section. You have half an hour to write a substantial essay . We recommend writing the GRE essay anywhere between three and five paragraphs .

The reason we say this is because you need that much space at least to develop your ideas thoughtfully and substantially. Five paragraphs are good.

An absolute maximum would be seven paragraphs. Do not exceed seven paragraphs , that really means you’re talking a little bit too much and testing the readers ability to keep up with your thinking.

Try to write at least 300 – 400 words or three to five paragraphs.

Practice is absolutely essential for the AWA. You cannot ace these AWA exams on your first try so practice . Try to type at least three to five of these essays.

This means at least three GRE issue essays and at least three GRE argument essays well before your actual GRE. Of course when you practice use a timer. Timing is all essential for organizational clarity .

Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report

ETS, makers of the GRE Test , just published their 2022 A Snapshot of the Individuals Who Took the GRE General Test , a comprehensive report of key GRE statistics. This report is a deep dive into the volume and performance information for test takers who took the GRE General Test between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2022; including the backgrounds of test takers and the factors that affected their GRE performance. Hopefully this will help you find the GRE test score range that will benefit your application.

This post is a snapshot of the GRE snapshot — we take a look at the key GRE statistics on gender, age, US citizenship, ethnic group, region, and whether they’re taking the GRE for MBA admissions. Let’s dig in!

Report Overview

ETS looked at the records of test takers who took the GRE General Exam within the period from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2022. This is broken up in the data below into the following five periods:

July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 (2017–18)
July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 (2018–19)
July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 (2019–20)
July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 (2020–21)
July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2023 (2021-22)

The most recent scores were used in the event that test takers had more than one set of scores for the GRE General Test.

The data includes both on-site and at-home testing options starting in the 2020-2021 year, when the option was introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

341,574 people took the GRE Test between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. This is a 6.8% decrease from 2020 – 2021. Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report, Achievable

ETS does want to be clear: the data in this report is not representative of the population planning to attend graduate school, nor of the characteristics and performance of students presently enrolled in graduate schools. It is just a snapshot of GRE test takers specifically.

These figures are presented without bias or opinion. Furthermore, the ETS has flagged that errors of measurement may occur as part of the standard process of evaluating a large and imperfect data set. Think of the data below as guides in your own GRE pursuits, and not an evaluation of any group.

341,574 people took the GRE Test between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. This is a 6.8% decrease from 2020 – 2021, and seems to have slowed the aggressive decline in test takers during the years impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, when you look at the chart above, you can see clearly that there’s a very different story for US Citizens versus non-US citizens. GRE test takers that were US Citizens declined by 31% from 180,294 to 124,151 between 2020-21 and 2021-22. This decline was offset by a gain in Non-US Citizen GRE test takers of 16.6% from 186,357 to 217,392. After 2020-21 was the first year that Non-US Citizen test takers overtook US Citizen GRE test takers, the trend continued and the gap widened substantially. There are now 75% more GRE test takers outside of the US than in it.

India has almost overtaken the US in total GRE test takers, with 114,647 in 2022 to the United States’ 124,151. Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report, Achievable

In the US, White was the largest group of GRE test takers, representing 53% of the total. The next largest ethnic group was Asian, at 9%, and then Black at 7%. If you combine Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Other Hispanic, as ETS does in the following chart, Hispanics are the largest non-white ethnic group of GRE test takers in the US with 12,674 students, or a little over 10% of the total.

When you remove the largest White ethnic group, you can see that the decline in US GRE test takers was consistent across all remaining ethnic groups. The lone exception is Asian test takers, who as a group declined more slowly than the others.

GRE test takers are skewing younger, as people 18-22 taking the GRE has increased from 45% of the total in 2017-18 to 52% in 2021-22. All other test taker cohorts have slowly declined in their percentage of the total.

As you can see, the trend lines for each age group follow similar patterns, which shows that the overall composition of GRE test takers age has not changed dramatically in the last five years.

In 2021-22, the number of men taking the GRE was greater than the number of women taking the GRE for the first time in recent years. This change was largely driven by the shift from US Citizens to non-US Citizens, since the US has a predominantly female GRE test taker population, while countries like China and India have a predominantly male GRE test taker population.

Men had slightly higher mean Verbal Reasoning and higher Quantitative Reasoning scores than women, and women had a slightly higher mean Analytical Writing score than men. A Snapshot of the Individuals Who Took the GRE® General Test, 2022

Slightly more men took the GRE than women in 2021-2022 – 51% to 49%. Men outscored women on the GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, while women outscored men on the Analytical Writing section.

But when you dig deeper, you can see that there’s actually a big difference when you break out the gender of the test takers by country. Let’s explore that in the next section.

Suddenly these statistics look very different. Among US citizens, far more women took the GRE than men, with 64% of GRE test takers being women and only 36% of GRE test takers being men. This mirrors the recent report from AEI.org that showed that women earned 60% of all master’s degrees in 2020 .

Outside of the US, it’s a different story: 60% of GRE test takers outside of the US were men, while only 40% were women.

Also interesting is that the majority of GRE test takers were not US citizens : 64% of GRE test takers were not US citizens, while 36% were US citizens.

Men who were US Citizens scored higher than men who were not US Citizens on the Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections, but scored substantially lower on the Quantitative Reasoning section.

When compared to women who were US Citizens, women who were not US Citizens scored the same on the Verbal Reasoning section as Non-US Citizen women, lower on the Analytical Writing section, and much higher on the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Taken together, while it is clear that US citizens still enjoy a small advantage in the GRE Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections, possibly due to them being in their native English language, US citizens are being outperformed dramatically on the GRE Quantitative Reasoning section . This also tells you something about the kind of test takers commonly taking the GRE abroad, who are likely more focused on applying to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs in the United States.

In the report , ETS includes a breakdown of the number of GRE test takers in each country and what their average scores were. To save you from reading a list of 160+ countries, we’ve pulled out the data for the top twelve by volume below:

The United States and India have the most GRE test takers by far, with over 110,000 each, and China is third with just over 50,000 GRE test takers. After that, there is a huge gap, with the next country on the list, Nigeria, having 4,596 test takers. Only fourteen countries had more than 1,000 GRE test takers.

India has almost overtaken the US in total GRE test takers, with 114,647 in 2022 to the United States’ 124,151.

Let’s take a quick look at the top three countries. The average GRE Verbal score in the United States was 151.8; the average GRE Verbal score in India was 150.5; and the average GRE verbal score in China was 153.4. This shows the strength of China’s English language education in its most globally mobile students.

The average GRE Quant score in the United States was 150.1; the average GRE Quant score in India was 161.2; and the average GRE Quant score in China was 165.9. This is remarkable: China’s average GRE Quant score is 165.9, just 4.1 points from the maximum score of 170.

Asian MBA applicants had the highest average GRE scores for all three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report, Achievable

The average GRE Analytical Writing score in the United States was 3.9; the average GRE Analytical Writing score in India was 3.0; and the average GRE Analytical Writing sore in China was 3.4. The United States gets the best of this category among these three countries, likely in part due to the fact that English is the native language and its population has more experience writing in English.

China has the highest average GRE Quant score with an average score of 165.9. This is just 4.1 points from the maximum score of 170, and is truly an incredible average score.

American Samoa had the highest average GRE Verbal score with an average score of 161.8. However, they only had 121 GRE test takers, so it is a small sample size. Among the top fourteen countries with over 1,000 GRE test takers, Canada had the highest GRE Verbal score with an average score of 155.8.

Singapore had the highest average GRE Analytical Writing score with an average score of 4.5 out of 6. Close behind was the United Kingdom, who had an average GRE Analytical Writing score of 4.4. Singapore and the UK had 544 and 653 GRE test takers, respectively.

The number of GRE test takers in India increased 68% between 2020-21 and 2021-22. This helped offset the GRE’s decline in other regions, notably the US, which decreased 29% between 2020-21 and 2021-22. Aside from India, the GRE declined in China and the United States in the last year. GRE test takers increased slightly in Europe and in the rest of the world between 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Men who were US Citizens scored higher than men who were not US Citizens on the Verbal Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections, but scored substantially lower on the Quantitative Reasoning section. Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report, Achievable

The weighted average age of all GRE test takers is 22 (weighted by the number of test takers). The average age of GRE test takers was the same for men and women.

52% of all GRE test takers were under 23, and an additional 25% of test takers were 23-25. 77% of all GRE test takers were under 25 , which shows us that the majority of GRE test takers are studying for the GRE pretty close to when they finish their undergraduate degrees at 22.

For both men and women, younger GRE test takers had higher mean scores the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning measures than older GRE test takers. A Snapshot of the Individuals Who Took the GRE® General Test, 2022

These test takers are likely looking to move into graduate school programs immediately after their undergraduate program or after a short 1-2 year stint in the workforce. This is backed up by the table above, which shows that 52% of respondents had less than 1 year of work experience when taking the GRE, and a total of 66% of GRE test taker respondents had less than 3 years of work experience. Surprisingly, the majority of GRE test takers do not have much work experience.

The remaining 23% of test takers were 26 or older. Just 1% of GRE test takers were over 40 , which shows that the window for graduate school seems to close for most after 40 years old.

For this section, we’re going to focus on GRE test takers under 40, since that makes up 99% of all GRE test takers.

GRE test takers age 18-22 have higher average test scores than all other groups besides the outlier under 18 group. For both men and women, younger GRE test takers had higher mean scores than older GRE test takers. Additionally, the gender performance differences we saw earlier, with men outperforming women on the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, and women outperforming men on the Analytical Writing section, were consistent across all age groups.

While many of the majors match the overall trend towards less GRE test takers, there are still some interesting trends here. GRE test takers in Engineering and Physical Sciences have declined the least in the last 5 years, while GRE test takers in Education, Humanities and Arts, and Social and Behavioral Sciences have declined the most as a percentage.

Among intended graduate school majors, Engineering, Business, and Physical Sciences bucked the overall decline in GRE test takers and held steady or grew between 2020-21 and 2021-22. A common theory for why these majors bucked the trend was the shift to test-optional policies among US universities and graduate schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was less commonly enacted among STEM programs than others. In fact, that is not the case. Instead, this trend was caused by the growth in GRE test takers from India for each of these three categories, which you can see below.

When you factor in the Indian GRE test takers above, it is clear that the primary trend driving the differences in each major’s GRE test taker population over the last five years is whether or not that major is popular among Indian test takers.

What is a good GRE score by major depends on which major you’re applying for. The intended majors with the highest average GRE Verbal Reasoning scores are Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The intended majors with the highest average GRE Quantitative Reasoning scores are Business, Engineering, and Physical Sciences. These trends are guided by the types of scores that these programs want to see, as each major will emphasis different skills.

It is clear that the primary trend driving the differences in each major’s GRE test taker population over the last five years is whether or not that major is popular among Indian test takers. Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report, Achievable

The average GRE score for MBA applicants is 154.6 Verbal Reasoning, 152.8 Quantitative Reasoning, and 4.1 Analytical Writing. Getting higher than these scores will put you in a good position when applying to an average MBA program. Of course, what GRE score you need depends a lot on what MBA program you are applying to, so be sure to look up the median Verbal, Quant, and Writing scores for that program when setting your targets.

The majority of GRE test takers targeting MBA programs were white, representing 53% of the total population. The next largest ethnic group of GRE test takers targeting MBA programs were black, representing 12%, and Asian, also representing 12% of the total population.

Among the named ethnic groups, Asian MBA applicants had the highest average GRE scores for all three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.

GRE test takers applying to MBA programs skews older than the total GRE test taker audience, with only 46% of test takers under the age of 25 versus 77% for the overall population. The largest cohort of GRE test takers targeting MBA programs is 26-30 with 39% of test takers. Less than 15% of GRE test takers targeting MBA programs are over 30, and less than 4% are over 35.

Among GRE test takers applying to MBA programs, 26-30 year olds had the highest average Verbal Reasoning score and average Analytical Writing score, while 18-22 year olds had the highest average Quantitative Reasoning score.

58% of GRE test takers applying to MBA programs were men. This skews more heavily male than the total GRE test taker audience, which is 51% male.

Men applying to MBA programs had higher average scores than woman on the GRE Verbal Reasoning and GRE Quantitative Reasoning sections, while women had higher scores than men on the GRE Analytical Writing section.

The type of MBA program most popular among GRE test takers was Full Time, with 81% of respondents saying they plan to attend a full time program. Full time programs are still the most popular kind of MBA program enrollment type among GRE test takers.

GRE applicants pursing full time MBA programs had the highest average Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores.

Among GRE test takers, 73% of 2022 MBA applicants preferred doing their MBA entirely on-campus, up 4% from a year ago. Key GRE Statistics from the 2022 ETS GRE Snapshot Report, Achievable

20% of GRE applicants to MBA programs have less than one year of work experience, which shows that they’re applying to business school right after finishing their undergraduate degree. 34% of GRE applicants to MBA programs have less than 3 years of work experience, and 75% of GRE applicants to MBA programs have less than 8 years of work experience.

Except for those with 15 years of work experience or more, MBA applicants with more work experience had higher average GRE scores. MBA applicants with 5-7 years of work experience scored highest on the GRE Verbal Reasoning section, while MBA applicants with 3-4 years of experience scored highest on the GRE Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections.

Among GRE test takers, 73% of 2022 MBA applicants preferred doing their MBA entirely on-campus, up 4% from a year ago. An additional 10% of applicants were seeking a combination program that included some on-campus time. Only 4% of GRE test takers applying to MBA programs preferred online-only programs, the smallest cohort. When it comes to MBA programs, it seems that the networking and other benefits of being on-campus still outweigh the convenience of studying online.

GRE test takers applying to on-campus MBA programs had the highest average GRE scores in all sections. GRE test takers applying to online-only MBA programs had the lowest average GRE scores in all sections. It is possible that this is because online-only MBA programs are less selective, or because they target a different audience that generally gets lower GRE scores.

The ETS report A Snapshot of the Individuals Who Took the GRE General Test shows that the makeup of the average GRE test taker is shifting to be more international, particularly from India, and with more Physical Sciences and Engineering majors that ever before – thanks in part to that international shift.

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning measure assesses the ability to:

analyze and draw conclusions from discourse and reason from incomplete data
understand multiple levels of meaning, such as literal, figurative and author's intent
summarize text and distinguish major from minor points
understand the meanings of words, sentences and entire texts
understand relationships among words and among concepts

In each test edition, there is a balance among the passages across three different subject matter areas: humanities, social sciences (including business) and natural sciences. There is an emphasis on complex reasoning skills.

Analytical Writing

The Analytical Writing measure assesses critical thinking and analytical writing skills, including the ability to:

articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
control the elements of standard written English

The measure does not assess specific content knowledge and there is no single best way to respond.

Analytical Writing essay responses are evaluated on a 6-point holistic scale, including receiving a score from the e-rater scoring engine, a computerized program developed by ETS that is capable of identifying essay features related to writing proficiency. In holistic scoring, scores are assigned on the basis of the overall quality of the essay in response to the assigned task.

Reviewing Your Practice Exam Scores

To access and review your practice exam after this event, log back into the ETS website and follow these steps:

1. Select "My Test Preparation and Services" under the Test Preparation and Tools section.

2. Select "Go to Practice Test" for the exam you wish to review.

3. Select "Review Your Test"

4.. Review and confirm that your Test Taker information is correct.

5. Review the Summary of Performance to find your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores, as well as a Section Summary that breaks down each of the exam sections with details of how many questions were answered correctly and incorrectly.

6. You may also click on "Continue" in the top right corner to review the exam question by question. There are two options at the top of the screen for each question, and you can toggle between them to view "My Answer" and "Correct Answer" to see what questions were missed.

Score level descriptions for the analytical writing measure.

The reported Analytical Writing score ranges from 0 to 6, in half-point increments.

The statements below describe, for each score level, the overall quality of analytical writing demonstrated. Critical thinking and analytical writing skills (the ability to reason, assemble evidence to develop a position and communicate complex ideas) are assessed, along with the writer's control of grammar and the mechanics of writing.

Scores 6 and 5.5

Sustains insightful, in-depth analysis of complex ideas; develops and supports main points with logically compelling reasons and/or highly persuasive examples; is well focused and well organized; skillfully uses sentence variety and precise vocabulary to convey meaning effectively; demonstrates superior facility with sentence structure and usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.

Scores 5 and 4.5

Provides generally thoughtful analysis of complex ideas; develops and supports main points with logically sound reasons and/or well-chosen examples; is generally focused and well organized; uses sentence variety and vocabulary to convey meaning clearly; demonstrates good control of sentence structure and usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.

Scores 4 and 3.5

Provides competent analysis of ideas in addressing specific task directions; develops and supports main points with relevant reasons and/or examples; is adequately organized; conveys meaning with acceptable clarity; demonstrates satisfactory control of sentence structure and usage, but may have some errors that affect clarity.

Scores 3 and 2.5

Displays some competence in analytical writing and addressing specific task directions, although the writing is flawed in at least one of the following ways: limited analysis or development; weak organization; weak control of sentence structure or usage, with errors that often result in vagueness or a lack of clarity.

Scores 2 and 1.5

Displays serious weaknesses in analytical writing. The writing is seriously flawed in at least one of the following ways: serious lack of analysis or development; unclear in addressing specific task directions; lack of organization; frequent problems in sentence structure or usage, with errors that obscure meaning.

Scores 1 and 0.5

Displays fundamental deficiencies in analytical writing. The writing is fundamentally flawed in at least one of the following ways: content that is extremely confusing or mostly irrelevant to the assigned tasks; little or no development; severe and pervasive errors that result in incoherence.

The test taker’s analytical writing skills cannot be evaluated because the responses do not address any part of the assigned tasks, are merely attempts to copy the assignments, are in a foreign language or display only indecipherable text.

The reasoning and quantitative reasoning scores range between 130 and 170 . Within that range, scores are given in one-point increments. An analytical writing score is given from zero to six in half-point increments.

Both the verbal and quantitative sections are normally distributed, with an average score of around 150 points. Your raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly out of the 40 questions from each Verbal and quantitative section. This raw score is then transformed into a scaled score, anywhere between 130 to 170, through a method known as equating.

Equating calculates GRE scores by making them precise and balanced for all the students taking their tests in more than 1,000 GRE test centers globally. For the GRE Analytical Writing section, the two tasks are scored by one skilled rater and an e-rater, a computerized program used by the ETS.

A “good” GRE score isn’t so much about what score you achieve but the score you need to get into your desired school. Of course, the higher your score, the better your chance of getting into your dream grad school.

However, there are common baselines that can tell you what scores are considered a good GRE score and which scores will put you in the top 10% of test takers. See the percentile table above.

The average GRE scores in each category are 150 on verbal reasoning and 153 on quantitative reasoning. The average analytical writing score is 3.5. These scores are calculated from over 1.7 million test takers throughout the year.

Even if your overall GRE score is considered average, there is still a chance you might get into your desired program. Schools may value one part of your overall GRE score higher than the other. Each school is different, so it is best to aim for the highest score you can on every section.

GRE scoring can be confusing. What do the numbers mean? What are they out of? This guide will explain the GRE total score for both the General and Subject Tests, as well as give data on average GRE scores and how well you need to do in order to get a perfect GRE score.

What’s the Total Score for the General GRE?

There are three main sections on the GRE: Analytical Writing (the two essays you write at the beginning of the exam), Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. This section explains the score ranges for each section and gives a chart for easy reference.

The score range for Analytical Writing is 0-6, in half-point increments. Both of Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are scored the same way. Their score range is 130-170, in one-point increments.

GRE Score Ranges

What does the gre total score mean.

So, the highest total GRE score you can get would be a 340 (a 170 each in Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning), with a 6 in Analytical Writing. However, unlike the SAT and ACT, it’s not common to combine section scores into one GRE total score. Instead, you’d list your three section scores separately when reporting your GRE results.

Why are GRE section scores reported separately? It’s usually because most grad schools are more interested in one section score over the others, and they want to easily see which score you got in that particular section. Grad school programs are more specialized than undergrad programs, and the people looking at your GRE scores are usually concerned only with the section that more closely relates to what your program will be focusing on.

For example, if you’re going into an engineering PhD program, your Quantitative score will be the most important part of your GRE scores, and if you’re applying for a Master’s in Literature, your Verbal score will be much more important. So, keeping section scores separate helps schools easily see how well you did in the section they care most about.

What Are the Average GRE Scores?

Now you know the GRE total score. But what scores do most people get? Below are percentile rankings for each section of the GRE. The 50th percentile values correspond to the average score for that section. In some cases ETS didn’t provide the exact percentiles listed below, so the data was averaged to get particular percentile values. This data was compiled by averaging all exam scores between July 2012 and July 2015.

Average Scores for the General GRE

So, as you can see, most people score right in the middle of the score ranges for each section.

How Can You Get a Perfect GRE Score?

Are you interested in the GRE total score because you’re trying to get a perfect GRE score? If you’re aiming for a full 170 on both Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections, know that it will be hard to achieve. Significantly less than 1% of all test-takers get a perfect score on the GRE.

ETS, the organization which designs and administers the GRE, doesn’t disclose the entire process it follows to assign scores. However, by looking at the score conversion table used for the paper-based GRE located on page 118 of the ETS Guide to the Paper-Based GRE , it’s possible to get a general idea of how many questions you can get wrong and still get a perfect GRE score.

For this paper-based GRE score conversion table, you can miss two Verbal Reasoning questions and one Quantitative Reasoning question and still get a perfect score on the exam. We can’t rely on this scale completely, particularly because the paper-based GRE has 100 questions while the computer-based GRE only has 80, but we can use it as a rough estimate.

Remember, this can vary, but from the data we can make an educated assumption that you can probably only miss, at most, one question each on Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning and still get a perfect score, so you’d have to do really well on exam day to achieve a perfect GRE score.

Also, as I mentioned above, most programs are primarily interested in either the Verbal or Quantitative score, so getting a perfect GRE score likely won’t do a lot to help your application.

What’s the Total GRE Score for GRE Subject Tests?

There are seven GRE Subject Tests, and each has the same scoring scale. The score range is 200-990, in 10-point increments, so the highest score you could get on a Subject Test is 990.

The Biochemistry, Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Psychology Subject Tests each report subscores for more specific subject areas within the exam. These subscores have a range of 20-99, in one-point increments.

The process for scoring Subject Tests is pretty opaque, especially since each Subject Test has a different amount of questions, but you’d likely have to get nearly every question correct on these exams as well in order to get a full score.

What Does the Total GRE Score Mean For You?

The highest total score you can get on the GRE is a 340; however, section scores are usually reported separately.

For the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, the highest score you can get for each section is 170, and the lowest score is 130. The score scale is based on one-point increments. For Analytical Writing, the score range is 0-6, in half-point increments. All GRE Subject Tests have a score range of 200-990, in 10-point increments. It’s pretty tough to get a perfect score on the GRE, so the average scores are significantly lower than the GRE total score.

You can only get a few questions wrong on the GRE and still walk away with a perfect score, but remember, the GRE is just one component of your grad school application. Spend your time putting together a strong application in many areas rather than putting all your effort into trying to get a perfect GRE score. Even if you were to get the highest possible score on the GRE, it probably wouldn’t help you get into grad school if the rest of your application was weak, and, likewise, non-perfect GRE scores probably won’t hurt you much if you are strong in other areas such as your college grades, letters of recommendation, etc.

The GRE is a key component of your application to a graduate school, especially to a school in the USA or Canada. You will have to submit your score as part of your initial application, meaning schools will be comparing your score against other applicants. In this case, what is a “good” GRE score, and what is the average?

The average score for the Verbal Reasoning Section of the GRE is 151-152, 155-156 for the Quantitative Reasoning Section, and 4.0 for the Analytical Writing section. A “good” score, using statistics from the top 20% of GRE test takers 2019-2022, is as follows: 159 or above on the Verbal Reasoning section, 166 or above on the Quantitative Reasoning section, and 4.5 or higher on the Analytical Writing section.

In this article, I’ll take you through everything you need to know about the average and good scores for the GRE.

How is the GRE scored?

The GRE is broken down into 3 sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. You can read more about what the GRE exam is in this Think Student article.

The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the GRE are both made up of a series of questions.

When these are marked, a raw score is calculated. The raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly. For example, the maximum raw score would be 27, as there are 27 questions each in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections.

Then , the raw score is converted to a scaled score. This score ranges from 130 to 170 .

The Analytical Writing section is scored differently.

The ETS website states, “Analytical Writing essay responses are evaluated on a 6-point holistic scale, including receiving a score from the e-rater scoring engine, a computerized program developed by ETS that is capable of identifying essay features related to writing proficiency.

In holistic scoring, scores are assigned on the basis of the overall quality of an essay in response to the assigned task.”

For the Analytical Writing section of the GRE, you will receive a single score . This score ranges from 0 to 6, divided into different brackets, as follows: 0, 0.5 and 1, 1.5 and 2, 2.5 and 3, 3.5 and 4, 4.5 and 5, and 5.5 and 6.

The maximum score you can get for the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE is 170, which is the same for the Quantitative Reasoning section. T he maximum score you can get for the Analytical Writing section of the GRE is 6.0.

What is the average GRE score?

For this section of the article, I will be using the collected data of all GRE scores from 2019 to 2022, as reported by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). You can find all of this data linked in this document.

Firstly, let’s look at the mean scores. A mean is a kind of average calculated by adding up all of the GRE scores, divided by the number of applicants. Essentially, the mean score is the hypothetical score you would get if every single applicant got the same score.

The data shows that the mean score for the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE was 150.94 for 2019-2022.

The mean score for the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE was 155.44 for 2019-2022 , which means that on average, students scored around 5 points better on the Quantitative Reasoning than the Verbal Reasoning.

The mean score for the Analytical Writing section of the GRE was 3.56 for 2019-2022.

Therefore, for an ‘average’ score, you’d need to score around 151 on the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE, 155 on the Quantitative Reasoning section, and 4.0 on the Analytical Writing section.

Secondly, let’s look at the percentile ranks of each section. Percentiles show the percentage of students who scored lower than a specified score.

For the Verbal Reasoning section, the percentile for students who scored 152 is 50. This means that 50% of students scored less than 152, and 50% of students scored 152 or higher. Therefore, according to the percentile data, the ‘average’ score for the Verbal Reasoning GRE is 152.

For the Quantitative Reasoning section, the percentile for students who scored 156 is 49. This means that 49% of students scored less than 156, and 51% of students scored 156 or higher. Therefore, according to the percentile data, the ‘average’ score for the Quantitative Reasoning GRE is 156.

For the Analytical Writing section, the percentile for students who scored 4.0 is 56. This means that 56% of students scored less than 4.0, and 44% of students scored 4.0 or above. Therefore, according to the percentile data, the ‘average’ score for the Analytical Writing GRE is 4.0.

Overall, an average GRE score is 151-152 on Verbal Reasoning, 155-156 on Quantitative Reasoning, and 4.0 on Analytical Writing.

What is considered a “good” GRE score?

Of course, any score that you’ve put time and effort into achieving is good! However, for the sake of this article, we’ll say that a good GRE score is in the top 20% of scores. I’ll also be going through the top 5% and 1%.

First, let’s look at the percentile data for the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE.

The percentile for students who scored 159 on Verbal Reasoning is 81, meaning 19% of students scored 159 or higher. Only 5% of students scored 165 or higher, and the top 1% of students scored 169 or 170 (the maximum score).

Secondly, let’s look at the percentile data for the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE.

The percentile for students who scored 166 on Quantitative Reasoning is 80, meaning 20% of students scored 166 or higher . 6% of students scored maximum marks (170) on the Quantitative Reasoning section.

As we’ve seen from both the ‘average’ score data and the ‘good’ score data, students tend to do better on the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Finally, let’s look at the percentile data for the Analytical Writing section of the GRE.

The percentile for students who scored 4.5 on Analytical Writing is 81, meaning 19% of students scored 4.5 or higher. The top 10% of students scored 5.0 or higher, the top 2% of students scored 5.5, and the top 1% of students scored maximum marks (6.0).

Overall, a ‘good’ score on the GRE would be 159 or above on the Verbal Reasoning section, 166 or above on the Quantitative Reasoning section, and 4.5 or higher on their Analytical Writing.

However, any score that you’ve worked hard to earn is good! Don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t do as well as you anticipated or as well as the “statistics say you should’ve”.

What are good GRE scores for the Ivy League?

It is very rare that a university or college will set a specific target for a standardised test such as the GRE. However, this doesn’t mean that the prospective school won’t have a ‘target’ score and a lower band in mind when it comes to reviewing applications.

Your GRE ‘requirements’ will be dependent on the course you wish to study, and at which graduate school. I’ll take you through some of the examples for different Ivy League schools, such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Cornell, and Columbia.

The Harvard Business School states on their website, linked for you here , their ‘class profile’ is of students who scored between 150 and 170 on the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE, and between 145 and 170 on the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE.

As reported by Student Progress on this section of their website, the average GRE score of successful Princeton applicants is 161 in the Verbal Reasoning section and 163 in the Quantitative Reasoning section.

In this report, the Yale Business School stated that in 2022, their ‘class profile’ was of students who scored between 159 and 169 on the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE, and between 164 and 170 on the Quantitative Reasoning section .

Cornell University’s Engineering School states on their website, linked here , successful applicants on average scored over 153 in the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE and over 160 in the Quantitative Reasoning section .

Columbia University’s Engineering school states on their website, linked here , successful applicants from previous years scored around 91% overall (around 310). This would also mean a score of at least 150 in one section of the GRE and 160 in the other.

It should be noted, however, that GRE requirements all vary by department. To know the specific GRE requirements for your field, you should consult that department specifically!

Can you still get into graduate school with a bad GRE score?

Yes, it’s possible that you can still go to a graduate school with a score below the average.

If your GRE score is lowered than you anticipated, there are a few options of how to proceed:

Retake the GRE and try to achieve a ‘better’ score
Apply with your current GRE score
Contact your programs and ask for specific guidance on GRE score requirements

Your application will be based off several factors, not just your GRE score. Even if you think other applicants may have a better score than you, your application may be stronger in other areas, and the prospective graduate school will not evaluate your application just based on one score

As well as this, it’s entirely possible for you to retake the GRE if you aren’t happy with your results.

The ETS website, linked here , states that you are able to take the GRE every 21 days and up to 5 times in a 365-day period.

Therefore, if you start taking the GRE a few months before the application period, you can resit the examination and still get your results in time for your application.

That being said, if you don’t want to resit the GRE, getting a score below the average is definitely not a deal breaker.

Depending on your score compared to the average, you could contact your prospective graduate programs and inquire about GRE score flexibility.

Many graduate schools will most likely have a lower bound of GRE scores they will consider acceptable, but they may be generous enough to accept a score a few points lower.

The most important thing is not to worry if your score is lower than you expected. As long as you give yourself enough time before you submit your application, you won’t have to make any big decisions right away.
