How to Use Quora

Last Updated: May 11, 2019

wikiHow is a “wiki,” similar to Wikipedia, which means that many of our articles are co-written by multiple authors. To create this article, 9 people, some anonymous, worked to edit and improve it over time. This article has been viewed 43,241 times. Learn more...

Quora is an online questions and answers website with a very diverse content and user base. It is an extremely useful platform for getting answers to your questions as well as brushing up your writing skills by answering questions. This article is a guide to help you get started on Quora.

Getting Started

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 4.41.04 PM.png

  • If you don't want to sync your Facebook account, select Not now to skip this step.

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 5.51.59 PM.png

  • You can answer the question, comment on an answer, upvote, downvote or share an answer by clicking on their respective buttons, follow the question or bookmark it.
  • Since the feed changes with every refresh, it is recommended to use the bookmark option frequently so you don't lose the answers you like or found helpful.
  • You can also add credentials about your work, study, etc.

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 5.52.39 PM.png

  • If you ask the question anonymously, copy the link of the question and save in a text file because this question won't be visible on your profile directly.

Screen Shot 2017 09 29 at 5.57.06 PM.png

  • You can even request specific people for answers. Best way to find the best people who might be helpful by searching some keywords relevant to the question, it will display the users with those keywords in their credentials.

Answering Questions

Step 1 Analyze...

  • If you're answering controversial questions, try to write neutrally. It is easy to get carried away and create extremely emotion-packed answers, but always remember that you are answering a question, not expressing your own feelings.
  • Make sure that the image is relevant to the answer, otherwise the Quora moderation may collapse the answer. When an answer is collapsed, it stops getting exposure in the website.
  • 4 Keep updating the answer if necessary. If the facts of your answers are subject to change , make sure you keep updating the answer. This can be done by going on the answer menu … and selecting Edit Answer .

You Can Check Your Stats

Quora has its own statistics tool to measure the progress of your profile. Select the ‘Stats’ category by clicking on your profile image at the top of the page. You can monitor the status of your questions, answers, posts, or the entire information from this page.

As a result, you’ll get a clear picture of how much you’re growing.

Upvote/Downvote

This function improves the selection of the responses. Many Quora questions include hundreds of replies, which might make it difficult to choose the most relevant ones. You can select whether to like (upvote) or dislike (downvote) an answer by simply pressing the “Upvote” arrow or the arrow going in the opposite direction.

This is the first thing that a visitor sees when they check your profile. Hence, pick an answer you are proud of.

Congratulations friend, you’re a poisonous potato.

For years, Minecraft’s own toxic tuber has been neglected and underappreciated, lacking both purpose and usefulness. For years, you – the community – tried to highlight this, working tirelessly to bring it to our attention and literally begging us for more functionality. As of today, your concerns are a thing of the past.

Writer: Brad Ward

Man sitting in the light in a dark room

I wanted to create some guides so you as writers have support when generating new content. In this how-to, I will walk you through step-by-step on how to use Quora as a powerful tool for coming up with content ideas

Why quora is a great source.

If you’re unfamiliar with Quora, don’t fret. Quora is a question-based online community that is free to everyone. Quora reduces the need for “feed” scrolling like some other user-based question sites and does not allow anything but questions as it’s main point of contact. Images and news articles aren’t allowed. Additionally, once a question is posted, anyone can answer it. These answers can be upvoted or downvoted too, so you can gauge how receptive the community is towards certain answers. This does a few things, like create a genuine public forum, expose more unique experiences as experiential knowledge, and provide a more accessible knowledge for hard-to-answer questions.

Quora also works because it’s very easy to use. The keyword search query categorizes questions based on topic or industry so you don’t have to scour through loads of unrelated questions. Based on this function you can tailor a homepage to reflect things that you are interested in and receive notifications when new questions are posted, or when interesting ones take off.

Making your way around Quora

Before we begin, I just want to show you around  Quora  first. Creating an account can allow you to tailor searches, interests and topics, which can also be emailed to you. Navigating around Quora you’ll notice the search bar on the top of the screen – here is the simple keyword search that you’ll want. If I type in “leather shoes” for example, you will see a drop down that comes from the search query box. You can search for it generally (with no filters), or by topic as well. If you’d like to follow a topic, click the search for the topic and click to follow. Once you’ve identified topics that interest you, you can also improve your profile’s functionality. On the right hand side, you’ll see a list of ways to improve your feed by asking questions, adding credentials (if you wish to answer questions), following specific topics, and so on.

Finding the juicy content

Let’s say that you are writing an article related to fashion and you want to write about your leather shoes – which are pretty spiffy. If we search “leather shoes” in the general Quora search query, then we see questions about the best leather shoe brands and maintenance. These results will give you a general idea of common questions that are being asked around this topic.

What first pops up for me are: “What are the best brands of leather shoes in India?” and “What are leather shoe care & maintenance tips and advice?” Again, what you search for will be based on the type of content you know you need. Make note of the different topics that are being searched. You’ll want to save at least one question so that you can come back and answer it later.

Narrow in on the question

Sometimes new ideas pop out at you. If you are new to an area, identifying topical discussions may be difficult for you. You want to make sure that your topic is new for other people as well as being informative (rather than redundant). Your goal for searching through Quora is to identify a recent question that has the potential to be answered in a creative content format. For example, for Pastilla this might look like: “What SEO trends should we be watching for in the next 5 years?” This topic will be informative and is very topical. It also has the power to be revisited again and again when SEO trends have been updated.

Related to our shoe topic, though, this might look as simple as: “How to best clean leather shoes?” New articles don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but perhaps just rotate it a little. Since there are a variety of shoe types out there, as well as ways to clean one’s shoes, then this question might be self-sustaining as well. We will use some of the questions from Quora to check for keywords and popularity once we have a great question established. When creating a question, we want to keep in mind that the content must have an effect on our readers. Our content needs to be transformative in some, small way. It also needs to be multifunctional, because a variety of visitors might be able to visit your page and leave with a wide range of ideas from one question. You shouldn’t hone in on one topic and exclude others.

Once you have identified a question, make sure to also identify the content that you will be using to answer the question. You’ll need to run this by the client, project manager, account manager, and/or leadership team to determine time-frame, budget and resources needed.

Creating the content

Now you’ve got your question and content approved, and you’ve double checked it’s keywords (we will do this shortly). It’s time to create your content. Visuals are by far the easiest way to display information, but they need to be supported by written word too. Video is the most multifunctional content asset, but it can take the most time and dedication depending on the size and scope of the piece. If you create a video, you should write a synopsis and transcription. If you write a blog post, you can create supportive infographics. You can also turn blog posts into videos, videos into shorter social/shareable videos, and infographics into podcasts. Be aware of the possibilities with every piece of content and think in line with getting the biggest bang for your buck.

People crave infographics. Articles can be tedious on the eyes, but infographics are poignant, colorful and interesting. People especially love infographics of maps. Get creative and think of ways that an infographic might be a great addition to your article. Even if you have a blog titled, “What SEO trends should we be watching for in the next 5 years,” you could put together infographics of mobile usage versus desktop, trends in social media usage, and the top-used website apps, for example.

Evergreen content

This is perhaps the most important part. You want to look for opportunities to create content that will stay fresh over a long period of time so you can consistently make new content around it for weeks, months or years, and continue to post it to relevant Quora questions or other social sites and forums. Once you’ve completed your content and posted it to the appropriate channel, you will refer back to the original Quora question and answer the original question with a synopsis and the completed content. Additionally, seek out similar questions on Quora, and leave synopses and completed content in their questions as well.

Identifying keywords: a simple guide

With all content published online, we know as writers (and editors) that addressing SEO is key. You have probably used SEO before, but if you’re new to identifying keywords for SEO it can seem a bit daunting. I created this how-to guide as a breakdown of how to establish the keywords with any SEO content. To make it as clear as possible, I’ll be mapping out different characteristics through a variety of platforms and scenarios. There is no one size fits all method, but there are tools out there to help you identify which keywords are top priority. A few ways in which we’ll identify keywords are through: audience uptake, number of visits, topical / relevance, and how easily the keyword will be taken up. We’ll be using Google Trends and keyword planner, but ultimately, your vision of the content will be the driving force behind successful and innovative content.

What are keywords and why are they important?

Keywords are the ideas or topics that define what your content is about. Keywords are important because connects your content piece to what people are searching for on search engines. By using some of the methods below, you can identify in real time what keywords people are using to search for specific content. Keywords can range anywhere from one word to a five word phrase. Since there are so many variations of five word phrases that can pop up, it’s super helpful to use technology to source this information. When deciding on a potential topic or keyword, you’ll want to consider the following core parameters.

Will it resonate with the audience?

As a content creator, this is the first thing that you will be considering. This might happen intuitively, or by accident. If you stumble across a good idea, an interesting story, or you yourself are searching for an answer, you are in a way participating with your fellow audience. Identifying if a keyword or idea will resonate with the audience is just that – what is the audience searching? This first question is also at the core of identifying keywords and nailing down successful topics. Finding a topic that resonates will also relate to how you are finding your ideas. It is best to use a platform like Quora so that you are not aimlessly testing already poor keywords. It may be tough to identify what it is that the audience is asking, but once you do know this, you are able to generate a wide range of content. I’ll be using the example of the leather shoe business again. In this example, think about the types of questions your potential customers will have around leather shoes.

The numbers: how many times is the keyword being searched

Let’s say you identify from Quora that people want to know about the best leather shoe brands and ways of maintaining leather shoes. Perfect. We have two ideas to go with. To identify which one is more relevant, or perhaps needed, you’ll want to identify how many times that question has been searched for on search engines. Let’s see if we can pick out the keywords from a question like, “How to clean leather shoes?” Go to Adwords Keyword Planner and type in “How to clean leather shoes:

how to write a story quora

In the keyword planner, we see that the keyword phrase “how to clean leather shoes” gets searched about 4,400 times every month. That’s a significant amount of searches per month. If your article is the top result for that keyword, you’re seeing a really good amount of traffic every single month. To me, this means we do not need to search for “best leather shoe brands” just yet. We can save that keyword for a later time.

Let’s get… topical!

As much as relevance is concerned, you’ll want to be mindful of whether or not your keywords are topical. You can identify topical-ness by putting your keywords in  Google Trends.  By doing this you’ll be able to:

  • Identify seasonal trends.
  • Use related topics and queries to find new blog post ideas.

First, go ahead and navigate to Google Trends. Next, type in your preferred topic or keyword and press enter. You should see a chart pop up, and it might look something like what’s below.

how to write a story quora

This chart was pulled from a Google Trends report for our “how to clean leather shoes” keyword. This chart is very helpful because you can alter the parameters, such as the duration and region, to fit your preference. This example reflects the query “how to clean leather shoes” searched for in California over the past five years.

I can see that interest has remained pretty consistent over the past five years, so I dub this “evergreen” content. Remember, evergreen content is content that is fine to create and push out anytime throughout the year. Comparatively, I can search for “Christmas Songs” and see that there is a yearly increase right around the holidays:

how to write a story quora

In this case, seasonality is highly important. As with relevance and topicality, you’ll also want to consider the seasons. Even when considering seasonality also be mindful of the timing, location and audience. If you’re writing for a blog about snowbirds (people who vacation south for the winter), then they might be searching for topics related to sunscreen even in the winter time. Other topics like “how to drive on ice” might be best presented during fall, or right before winter strikes. They’ll also be highly relevant in a certain location, but meaningless in another. Posting and sharing your article right at the start of a seasonal upswing (for the right audience) is a strategic marketing tactic.

Additionally, you can use Google Trends “Related Queries” to help you identify related topics people are looking for. From there you can check out their individual trends and use the information to help you determine when to publish certain content. You may find similar topics that have a higher chance of success than the topic you have in mind. One last note: before you switch up topics, make sure to run keyword research again with the new keywords so you have an idea of the number of searches per month.

What is the keyword’s search engine ranking?

Ah yes, search engine ranking. This should be a driving force in creating content, but it should not derail you from a topic if you have a strong enough vision for it. Even highly-difficult keywords can lead toward content that is very shareable on social media, easily viral, and even top search engine ranking (with a little extra work on your part). Lastly, in Keyword Planner, the “Competition” column shows the competitive advertisement placement for each keyword. The level of competition—low, medium, or high— is determined by the number of advertisers bidding on each keyword relative to all related keywords across Google.Thinking outside of ads, you can use that same metric to determine the competitiveness of the organic space. Ultimately, if the ads are cheaper, overall competitiveness for a given keyword is lower.

Thoughts on creating content

I went over this a little bit before when discussing Quora, but I’d really like to drive it home. When creating content, you want to make sure that all your content is transformative and multifunctional. For example, whenever you make a video, you must include a synopsis and a transcription so that it is accessible for readers. Without this information, your content is considered obsolete. Additionally, keep in mind that infographics are what helps maintain reader focus. We cannot create the perfectly unique content, but we can try to tailor our work for all types of readers or receivers. If someone prefers videos, then we can turn a blog post into a video, or into smaller/shareable videos, podcasts and more. While videos are the best and most multifunctional content asset, they can end up taking the most time so be smart about how you put your time and energy into creating this kind of asset.

Try to include at least one or two infographics with every article. Infographics are colorful, informative and they break up the monotony. I didn’t include any with this article – but I should have! Long articles can be tedious, and hopefully you are still reading by now.

And lastly, keep it EVERGREEN! Look for opportunities to create content that will stay fresh over a long period of time, so you can consistently make new content around it for weeks or months or years, and continue to post it to relevant Quora questions or other social sites and forums.

How To Start Writing A Business Plan That Works

For the entrepreneur, knowing how to start writing a business plan can be as exhilarating as it is overwhelming. The business plan is a foundational document and the blueprint of your business and is critical for securing funding, setting clear goals, and communicating your vision to the world.

Let’s explore the significance of a business plan, the essential elements it should include, and strategies to forge a plan that resonates with stakeholders and steers your business toward success.

Whether you are about to launch your first business or need to revitalize an existing business strategy, a business plan provides the foundation that supports your entrepreneurial journey.

Why a Business Plan Is Needed

A business plan is not solely for the benefit of a bank manager or an investor . The business plan is a document that helps bring clarity to your vision and can guide every decision and strategy within your company.

A well written business plan forces you to put your goals and ideas into concrete, manageable steps. It cuts through the noise, ensuring you stay focused on what truly matters for your business’s growth.

Trump Posts 175 Million Bond Thanks To Billionaire Don Hankey

Apple just released a major upgrade for samsung galaxy watch 6, pixel watch, netanyahu says unintended strike by israel killed seven aid workers in gaza.

For startups looking to secure that critical initial investment, a business plan is often the first point of reference for potential backers. It’s a chance to sell your vision, show your financial acumen, and demonstrate a roadmap to profit.

Identifying potential pitfalls early is a vital aspect of proactive business ownership. A good business plan helps you prepare for the unexpected and develop strategies to mitigate risk and safeguard the longevity of your business.

Setting clear, measurable goals in your business plan provides a framework for tracking your progress. This will give you the insight needed to pivot or double down on strategies as the market dictates.

Creating Your Story

Before you start drafting sections and compiling data, step back and consider the story of your business. Your plan should be like a good book, with a clear narrative arc that compels the reader from the first sentence to the last.

Any good story is rooted in an understanding of the world it inhabits. Your business's narrative begins with a comprehensive analysis of the industry in which you operate, as well as the consumers you aim to serve.

Think about how you define your unique selling proposition (USP) . What sets your business apart from competitors? All good stories have a unique twist, and your business plan should articulate what makes your venture different from, and better than, the competition.

Introduce your team into the story. Highlight their expertise, experience, and any relevant achievements that lend credibility to the business’s ability to execute on its vision.

Writing Your Business Plan Is Just the Beginning

A business plan can span from a quick roadmap sketched on the back of a napkin to a hefty document carefully crafted to align with industry standards. Regardless of size, it should contain certain fundamental elements .

The act of writing a business plan, while pivotal, is just the first step in an ongoing process of refinement and execution.

Here’s how to make sure your business plan is a living document:

1. Regular reviews and updates

Markets shift, consumer behavior changes, and your business will grow. Your plan must evolve with these factors, which makes regular reviews and updates a must-do.

2. Be realistic

It’s essential to be both ambitious and realistic in your plan. Don’t over-inflate projections or underestimate costs. An unrealistic plan is as unattractive to investors as a lack of vision and ambition.

3. Seek professional input

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Experienced business advisors, accountants, and mentors can provide invaluable feedback and spot issues you may have missed.

4. Start small

Your first draft doesn’t have to be perfect. Write down your initial thoughts, outline your ideas, and refine them over time. Starting with a large plan can be intimidating but working on it gradually can be a more manageable and effective approach.

The bottom line is that writing a business plan can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach and attention to detail, you can create a document that not only articulates your vision but actively works to make that vision a reality. It’s a living, breathing narrative that outlines your business’s course of action, and should be treated with care and enthusiasm.

I tried the new Google. Its answers are worse.

Google’s ai-‘supercharged’ search generative experience, or sge, sometimes makes up facts, misinterprets questions and picks low-quality sources — even after nearly 11 months of public testing..

how to write a story quora

Have you heard about the new Google ? They “ supercharged ” it with artificial intelligence. Somehow, that also made it dumber.

With the regular old Google, I can ask, “What’s Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth?” and a reasonable answer pops up: “169.8 billion USD.”

Now let’s ask the same question with the “experimental” new version of Google search. Its AI responds: Zuckerberg’s net worth is “$46.24 per hour, or $96,169 per year. This is equivalent to $8,014 per month, $1,849 per week, and $230.6 million per day.”

Um, none of those numbers add up.

Google acting dumb matters because its AI is headed to your searches sooner or later . The company has already been testing this new Google — dubbed Search Generative Experience, or SGE — with volunteers for nearly 11 months, and recently started showing AI answers in the main Google results even for people who have not opted in to the test .

Should you trust that AI?

The new Google can do some useful things. But as you’ll see, it sometimes also makes up facts, misinterprets questions, delivers out-of-date information and just generally blathers on. Even worse, researchers are finding the AI often elevates lower-quality sites as reliable sources of information.

Normally, I wouldn’t review a product that isn’t finished. But this test of Google’s future has been going on for nearly a year, and the choices being made now will influence how billions of people get information. At stake is also a core idea behind the current AI frenzy: that the tech can replace the need to research things ourselves by just giving us answers. If a company with the money and computing power of Google can’t make it work, who can?

SGE merges the search engine you know with the capabilities of a chatbot. On top of traditional results, SGE writes out direct answers to queries, interspersed with links to dig deeper.

Geoffrey A. Fowler

how to write a story quora

SGE is a response to the reality that some people, including me, are starting to turn to AI like ChatGPT for more complex questions or when we don’t feel like reading a bunch of different sites. Onely , a search optimization firm, estimates that using SGE can make a user’s overall research journey 10 to 20 times shorter by assembling pros and cons, prices and other information into one place.

An all-knowing answer bot sounds useful given our shrinking attention spans. But Google has a lot to work out. We expect searches to be fast, yet Google’s AI answers take a painful second or two to generate. Google has to balance the already fragile economy of the web, where its AI answers can steal traffic from publishers who do the expensive and hard work of actually researching things.

And most of all, the new Google has to deliver on the promise that it can consistently and correctly answer our questions. That’s where I focused my testing — and kept finding examples where the AI-supercharged Google did worse than its predecessor.

Putting Google’s AI answers to the test

Often when you’re Googling, what you really want is a short bit of information or a link. On a day-to-day basis, the new Google is often annoying because its AI is so darned chatty.

A goofy example: “What do Transformers eat?”

The AI answer told me that fictional robots don’t really need to eat or drink, though they need some kind of fuel. Meanwhile, old Google had the one-word answer I was looking for: Energon. (It’s a kind of magical fuel.) You got that answer from new Google only by scrolling down the page.

This doesn’t just happen with alien robots. When SE Ranking, a firm dedicated to search engine optimization, tested SGE with 100,000 keyword queries, it found the average answer it generated was 3,485 characters — or roughly a third as long as this column. One of Google’s challenges is figuring out when its AI is better off just keeping quiet; sometimes, SGE asks you to press a “generate” button before it will write out an answer.

Most of all, when we search, we expect correct information. Google claims SGE has a leg up on ChatGPT because its knowledge is up-to-date.

Yet I found the new Google still struggled with recent affairs. Three days after the most recent Academy Awards, I searched for “Oscars 2024.” It told me the Oscars were still to come and listed some nominees.

And nothing undermined my trust in Google’s AI answers more than watching it confidently make stuff up.

That includes facts about yours truly. I asked it about an award-winning series I wrote for The Washington Post, and it attributed it to some stranger — and then gave a link to some other website.

Then there was the time SGE all too happily made up information about something that doesn’t even exist. I asked about a San Francisco restaurant called Danny’s Dan Dan Noodles, and it told me it has “crazy wait times” and described its food.

The problem is that this is an imaginary shop I named after my favorite Chinese dish. Google’s AI had no problem inventing information about it.

So-called hallucinations about real and fake topics are a known problem with current AI. A disclaimer above SGE results says, “Generative AI is experimental,” but that doesn’t solve the problem. Google needs to figure out how to say “I don’t know” when it isn’t confident.

Suspect sources

To give us answers to everything, Google’s AI has to decide which sources are reliable. I’m not very confident about its judgment.

Remember our bonkers result on Zuckerberg’s net worth? A professional researcher — and also regular old Google — might suggest checking the billionaires list from Forbes . Google’s AI answer relied on a very weird ZipRecruiter page for “Mark Zuckerberg Jobs,” a thing that does not exist.

In my tests, suspect sources were a pattern. At the suggestion of Onely, I asked the new Google which was more reliable: Apple iPhones or Samsung phones. As a longtime reviewer, I could tell you lots of good sources of information on this, including professional journalists and repair organizations like iFixit.

Instead, the AI cites random views of people pulled from social media. Beyond the limited usefulness of a single Reddit user’s experience, how does Google know that it wasn’t a fake review posted by the phonemaker?

“Google SGE plays by a different set of rules compared to the traditional search engine we know today,” said Tomek Rudzki, Onely’s head of research and development.

SEO firms have been trying to do quantitative studies of SGE’s values, though they’re limited by Google’s requirements on test accounts. But they’ve found a similar pattern in the disconnect between the sites that the old and new Google link to. The SEO software company Authoritas tested searches with a thousand shopping terms in late March, and found that 77 percent of the time, the domain of the No. 1 traditional search result showed up nowhere in the AI-written answer.

And in its study of 100,000 keyword searches, SE Ranking found that the question-and-answer service Quora is the most-linked source by SGE; LinkedIn and Reddit were fifth and sixth. How often would those sources be acceptable on an eighth-grade term paper?

On searches about tech topics — including lots of “how to” questions — SE Ranking found the most-linked domain was simplilearn.com . I’d never heard of it before; the site describes itself as an “online bootcamp.”

“This trend not only diminishes the quality of search results but also reduces traffic and revenue for many small businesses, including affiliate websites,” says SE Ranking’s head of SEO, Anastasia Kotsiubynska.

A work in progress

Google says SGE is an opt-in experiment. But Google already blew past its expected end last December, and it hasn’t offered any update on when it will come to search for everyone. It’s possible that Google doesn’t think SGE is accurate or fast or profitable enough and that it will end up changing it dramatically.

They are wise to go slow, even if it makes Google look as though it’s behind in the AI race. The rival search engine Bing from Microsoft made a similar AI overhaul in February 2023, but its AI is still best known for going off the rails .

In an interview, Elizabeth Reid, a Google vice president leading SGE, characterized it as a work in progress.

“We’re really focused on ensuring we get the experience really right. There are a lot of different factors on this — things like latency, accuracy, helpfulness,” Reid said. “What we’ve been finding as we’re iterating and learning is that it’s pretty nuanced.” In other words, there are times the AI is helpful and other times it’s not — and Google is still trying to figure out where to draw the line.

When I shared the examples in this column, Reid told me that SGE’s hallucination rates are “very low” and have decreased “meaningfully” since SGE’s May launch, though she declined to be specific.

“I don’t want to minimize it — it is a challenge with the technology” and something “we’re really working on,” Reid said. Putting links right next to the AI answers, she added, is important to enable people to check the facts for themselves.

Here’s a proposal: Because Google acknowledges correct facts are a problem, it ought to disclose its own data on accuracy before it brings SGE to a broader audience. With billions of searches daily, even 0.001 percent can add up to a lot of wrong information.

Another area of Google’s focus is “trying to help ensure that we get to the core of the question as quickly as possible, and then give additional elaboration,” Reid said.

As for citing low-quality sources, Google disputed the outside research on SGE, saying it is based on searches that are more limited than what Google sees in practice. But it declined to share data of its own.

Reid said SGE doesn’t have a different standard than old Google. “We do see more diversity of sources that are coming forth. But the aim is really to continue to put high-quality content at the top,” she said.

Choosing who to believe is hard enough for humans. What makes Google think its current AI tech, known as LLMs, or large language models, is up to the task?

“They’re not perfect,” Reid said. “We want to take this thoughtful approach because the brand of trust that people have with Google is really important.”

The future of our information depends on it.

Vote for Biden, Trump or 'Literally Anybody Else,' the name a Texas teacher is using to run

The texas man formerly known as dustin ebey said he's fed up with choosing between biden and trump, whom he criticized as a career politician and a billionaire, respectively.

how to write a story quora

Literally Anybody Else has entered the race.

A Texas teacher unsatisfied with the choice between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump has legally changed his name to "Literally Anybody Else" and announced his bid for the White House.

The U.S. Army veteran formerly known as Dustin Ebey created a website detailing his campaign ahead of the 2024 election. Earlier this month, Trump and Biden have both received the delegates required to land their spot as the presumptive Republican and Democratic candidates, respectively.

"For too long have Americans been a victim of its political parties putting party loyalty over governance. Together lets send the message to Washington and say, 'You will represent the people or be replaced,'" Literally Anybody Else's bio reads.

Else is aiming to receive 113,000 signatures from Texas non-primary voters by May to secure his name on general election ballots. If he fails he urges supporters to write in his name serving as a "Neither" option.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

'Literally Anybody Else isn’t a person, it’s a rally cry'

The 7th-grade teacher from North Richland Hills, Texas is campaigning to make healthcare and education accessible.

"Literally Anybody Else isn’t a person, it’s a rally cry," his website reads.

His campaign site offers brief details about his stances on several policy topics from housing affordability to securing the border. His team is working on setting up a campaign headquarters location in Texas soon, his website said. USA TODAY has reached out to Else for further comment.

"People are fed up,” Else told  the Dallas Morning News . "Government is supposed to be by the people, for the people, but that’s not what we have here. We have a billionaire and a career politician."

Local station NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth shared a photo of Else's new driver's license .

How do write-in candidates work

Most U.S. states allow voters to write in the names on ballots for president, U.S. senators, representative, governors and state races. However, that does not ensure that the vote will count.

Many states require that write-in candidates file paperwork ahead of the election in order for the state to consider their votes valid, according to the U.S. government.

Without being on the ballot, Biden secured a win in January's New Hampshire primary as a write-in candidate.

He declined to appear on the ballot  after Democrats in the national party ordered New Hampshire, which is required by state law to hold the first-in-the-nation primary, to move its election.

Author Interviews

Don winslow ends trilogy, and his writing career, with final novel 'city in ruins'.

SSimon

Scott Simon

NPR's Scott Simon talks to best-selling suspense author Don Winslow about what he says is his final novel, "City in Ruins."

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Danny Ryan, who's been a Rhode Island mobster, dockworker and fugitive from the law, is now a pillar of the community in Las Vegas. He's got a palatial home to which good citizens come to pay homage and enjoy his hospitality, his young son he loves and the companionship - well, three times a week, anyway - of an accomplished and compelling woman he respects. What could possibly go wrong? "City In Ruins" is the third and final novel in the bestselling Danny Ryan trilogy by Don Winslow. It follows "City On Fire" and "City Of Dreams," and Don Winslow says quite explicitly, "City Of Ruins" is my final book - no loopholes I could detect. He joins us now from Julian, Calif. Thanks so much for being with us.

DON WINSLOW: Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

SIMON: The book opens with an implosion, a famous old Las Vegas hotel, now owned by Danny Ryan, being brought down from the inside. Is implosion a kind of theme for Danny Ryan's life, too?

WINSLOW: Yeah, it sure is. Looking over the arc of these three books, I think we're looking at a certain kind of self-destruction with dynamite, if you will, or explosives that were laid many years earlier on a long fuse, to torture the metaphor, and so implosion's definitely a theme.

SIMON: In earlier books, Danny had used what I'll just refer to as ill-gotten gains from a criminal enterprise to buy his way into a respectable hotel and gaming enterprise. He's got a dream. In fact, a hotel - I guess it's called the Dream in Italian.

WINSLOW: It is. Yeah, Il Sogno.

SIMON: Tell us about this place he wants to bring into being.

WINSLOW: Well, he wants to bring into being a new kind of megahotel where people walk in and it's literally a dream with images shifting constantly on the walls of beauty and action and all kinds of things. And I think it's reflective of his own dream of trying to create a new kind of life for himself and for his son.

SIMON: What stands in the way?

WINSLOW: Well, a number of things. For one thing, this valuable piece of real estate that this old hotel sat on is critical to power on the Las Vegas Strip. And he basically undermines a rival in order to acquire it. And then it turns out that both Danny and this rival have mob ties from the past that each of them is trying to escape and trying to leave behind him, and neither one of them can. And so those things really get in the way of Danny's dream.

SIMON: You've written so many other books over the years, including "Savages," "The Force," "The Cartel," bestsellers made into screen properties. What's kept you coming back to Danny Ryan?

WINSLOW: You know, it took me almost 30 years to complete this trilogy. You know, it's funny. You look back on your life. When I started the Danny Ryan books, my now-adult and married son was a toddler. What I was - set out to do was to write a fully contemporary crime epic that took its stories and characters, however, from the Greek and Roman classics, principally the Aeneid, but also the Odyssey and the Iliad and certain Greek tragic dramas. I kept failing at it. I would write some of the book, and some of it worked, and a lot of it didn't. And so at times, I was discouraged, thinking that either, A, it was a bad idea, or, B, it was a good idea and I didn't have the chops to carry it out. But I kept coming back to it 'cause I couldn't leave it behind. And then later on, a couple of decades down the road - you know, I live mostly in California - I started to go back to Rhode Island, where a lot of the first book is set, and I fell in love with the place again, and I felt that I could write it, perhaps in a better and more mature way than I could have done 20 years earlier.

SIMON: Did you feel a kinship with Danny?

WINSLOW: I think so. You know, I grew up with a lot of Danny'. I played pond hockey with them. I went to the beaches with them, you know, to the bars and restaurants and all kinds of things. So it's funny how little self-awareness you can have. The second volume of this book, "City Of Dreams," is basically Danny wandering the country trying to find a place to set his feet. I was deep into writing the third book before I looked back on the second book and realized how connected I was to Danny in that regard. You know, I left Rhode Island when I was 17 and spent decades wandering not only the country but the world, doing various kinds of jobs trying to make a living, trying without a notable degree of success to become a writer and finally kind of made that happen and found a place, if you will, to set my feet.

SIMON: You mentioned all the jobs you had. You were a private eye in Times Square.

WINSLOW: Yes, sir.

SIMON: Is that as exciting as it sounds, or is it a lot of keyhole peeping?

WINSLOW: (Laughter) Not too much keyhole peeping, thank God. You know, I didn't do what they call matrimonial work. But, no, it was not romantic at all. I was basically what is known as a street rat. And so I started that by investigating embezzlement and thefts in cinemas and legit movie theaters on Times Square - there were a few in those days - and then graduated, if you want to call it that, to being a troll. I would walk around Times Square trying to get mugged, and there were big tough guys, which I am not, behind me jumping in like riders at the rodeo and then eventually chasing runaways and trying to get to them before the pimps did.

SIMON: By the way, not that I'm interested in doing this, how do you arrange to get mugged?

WINSLOW: (Laughter) Well, for one thing, you arrange to be 5'6 and 130 pounds. That helps. And then you walk around looking like you don't know where you're going, like you're a tourist, with a wallet prominently in your back pants pocket.

SIMON: Wow. Sounds like it was indispensable to your literature.

WINSLOW: In some ways. You know, I mean, I think that being a PI, and then later I did it out in California, out here, on a much higher kind of level. But it got me in that world. I got to know cops and crooks and street people and lawyers and judges and courtrooms and all of that. But I think the most important influence it had on my work was in terms of investigation itself. I learned how to do research. I learned how to interview people. And the same skills that I would have used as an investigator are the skills that I brought to researching the novels.

SIMON: All of this steers us to asking about your goodbye. The acknowledgments you write include hundreds of people, parents...

WINSLOW: Yes.

SIMON: ...readers, old teachers...

WINSLOW: Sure.

SIMON: ...Even your agent.

WINSLOW: Especially my agent. Yeah.

SIMON: And as you say, goodbyes are hard. So why are you retiring?

WINSLOW: It's the confluence of two streams, if you will. One is that having finished this trilogy felt like an ending to me. It felt like, yeah, kind of my life's work. The second, though, major stream, and probably more important one, is that I just think that we're at a time in this country of crisis and a time where democracy is under a severe threat. And I think that the response to that needs to be more immediate than one can do in a novel, you know? You know, I'm not young. I'm 70. And I think whatever energies and time I have are better spent in that fight.

SIMON: Don Winslow, his new and insists his last novel, "City In Ruins." Thanks so much for being with us, and thanks for everything.

WINSLOW: Thank you very much. That's gracious of you to say.
