सध्या आपण अश्या जगामध्ये वावरत आहोत जेथे बहुतुक हि मोठ्या प्रमाणात वाढली आहे आणि वाहतुकीच्या साधनांचा देखील मोठ्या प्रमाणत उपयोग होत आहे म्हणजेच वाहतुकीसाठी गाड्यांचे प्रमाण खूप वाढले आहे आणि त्यामुळे रस्त्यावर गाड्यांची गर्दी तर होतच आहे परंतु गाड्यांच्या धुरावाटे बाहेर पडणारा कार्बनडाय ऑक्साईड देखील मोठ्या प्रमाणात वाढत आहे.

परंतु भारतामध्ये तामिळनाडू या राज्यामध्ये अपघाताचे प्रमाण खूप कमी आहे कारण तेथे काटेकोरपणे रस्ता सुरक्षा नियम पाळले जातात आणि तसेच सरकारची रस्ता सुरक्षेबद्दलची पावले देखील खूप कडक आहेत. आपल्या भारतामध्येच अपघात होतात असे नाही परंतु जगामध्ये सर्व ठिकाणी अपघात होतात.

अपघाताचे प्रमाण वाढण्यासाठी अनेक गोष्टी जबाबदार आहेत आणि जर लोकांनी गाडी चालवताना जर रस्ता सुरक्षेचे पालन नाही केले तर असेच अपघाताचे प्रमाण वाढत जाणार. अपघात होण्याची अशी अनेक करणे आहेत आणि त्यामधील एक म्हणजे गाडी खूप वेगाने चालवणे. सध्या बाजारामध्ये अशी वाहने देखील आली आहेत जी वेगाने पाळतात आणि तरुण पिढीला त्याचे कौतुकाच वाटते आणि असे इत्येक तरुण वेगाने धावणाऱ्या गाड्या विकत घेतात.

पण हे अपघात होऊ नयेत म्हणून सरकारने काही नियम घालून दिले आहेत तसेच गाडी चालवताना कोणाच्याही जीवाची हानी होऊ नये म्हणून सरकारने काही उपाय बनवले आहेत आणि त्यालाच आपण रस्ता सुरक्षा उपाय म्हणू शकतो. रस्ता सुरक्षा उपायांमध्ये काही सरकारने चालू केलेले उपाय म्हणजे ट्रॅफिक पोलीस यंत्रणा, तसेच अरुण आणि नागमोडी वळणावर दिशा दर्शवणारे किंवा पुढच्या धोक्याबद्दल माहिती देणारे बोर्ड, ट्रॅफिक सिग्नल यंत्रणा, एकाच वेळी अगदी सहजपाने दोन वाहने जातील.

असा लांब रस्ता तसेच रस्ता उंच असेल तर रस्त्याच्या दोन्ही बाजूला कठडे असावे. रस्ता सुरक्षा हि सध्या सर्वात महत्वाची आणि सामान्य गोष्ट आहे आणि हि तरुण पिढीमध्ये आणि लोकांच्यामध्ये जागृत करणे महत्वाचे ठरेल आणि रस्त्यावरून जाणाऱ्या प्रत्येक व्यक्तीने रस्ता सुरक्षा नियम पाळले तर आपल्या देशातील अपघाताचे प्रमाण कमी होयील आणि कोणाला अपघातामध्ये आपला जीव गमवावा लागणार नाही.

रस्त्यावरून गाडी मारत असताना गाडी चालकांनी किंवा चालत जाणाऱ्या व्यक्तीने काही नियम पाळले पाहिजेत जसे कि रस्त्यावरून जाणाऱ्या चालकाने रस्त्याच्या डाव्या बाजूने गेले पाहिजे. तसेच जास्त गर्दीच्या रस्त्यावर जाताना अतिरिक्त काळजी घ्या तसेच अवघड वळणावर गाडीचा वेग कमी करून वळण घेणे.

जे लोक दुचाकीवर प्रवास करतात त्यांनी उत्तम दर्जाचे हेल्मेट वापरले पाहिजे आणि जर कोणत्याही दुचाकी चालवणाऱ्या व्यक्तीने हेल्मेट घातले नसेल तर त्याच्याकडून दंड आकारण्यात यावा. प्रत्येक चालकाने आपले वाहन हे मर्यादित वेगावर चालवावे आणि ज्या भामध्ये रुग्णालये, शाळा, कॉलेज आहेत त्या ठिकाणी वाहने सावकाश चालवावी.

रस्त्यावर गाडी चालवणाऱ्या प्रत्येक व्यक्तीला रस्त्यावर असणाऱ्या चिन्हाची माहिती असावी तसेच रस्त्यावर गाडी मारत असताना दोन गाड्यांच्या मध्ये सुरक्षित अंतर असणे खूप गरजेचे असते. जास्तीत जास्त अपघात हे रहदारीचे नियम न पाळल्यामुळे होतात आणि म्हणून गाडी चालवताना सर्व रहदारीचे नियम किंवा रस्ता सुरक्षा नियम लक्षात घेतले पाहिजेत.

एके दिवशी मला काहीतरी कामा निमित्त शहराबाहेर दुसऱ्या शहरात जायचे होते. माझ्याकडे मोटारसायकल होती. तिच्यावर बसून मी निघालो घरापासून थोड्या अंतरावर पेट्रोल पंप होते. बाइक मध्ये पेट्रोल कमी होते मी विचार केला की अगोदर पेट्रोल टाकून घेतो मग पुढील प्रवासाला निघतो. यानंतर पेट्रोल पंपावर जाऊन मी पेट्रोल भरवून घेतले. 

जसेही मी पेट्रोल भरून बाहेर पडलो. पाहतो तर काय समोरून तुफान वेगात तीन व्यक्ती एका मोटारसायकल वर बसून येत होते. आणि त्यांच्याच विरुद्ध बाजूने एक व्यक्ती ट्रॅक्टर चालवत येत होता. आणि क्षणातच मोटरसायकल आणि ट्रॅक्टर दोघे एकमेकांसमोर आले. ट्रॅक्टरस्वार ने अर्जंट ब्रेक मारला. परंतु मोटरसायकलस्वार व्यक्तींचा वेग ताब्यात आला नाही. आणि दोघांची जोरदार टक्कर झाली. एक भीषण अपघात माझ्या पाहत झाला होता.

मी माझ्या बाईक वरून उतरून तेथे पोहोचतो तेवढ्यात अनेक लोक त्यांच्या आजूबाजूला गोळा झाले होते. पोलिस आणि सरकारी रुग्णवाहिकेला सूचना देण्यात आली. दहा मिनिटांनंतर रुग्णवाहिका आली. बाईक चालवणारा व्यक्ती तर जागीच ठार झाला होता. मध्ये बसलेला व्यक्ती कापत होता. आणि मागे बसलेल्या व्यक्तीचा एक पाय फ्रॅक्चर झाला होता. मी पाहिलेला हा अपघात खूप भयानक होता. मला खूप वाईट वाटत होते. मी देवाला त्यांना जीवन दान देण्यासाठी प्रार्थना केली. रुग्णवाहिकेतून काही लोक बाहेर आले त्यांनी बाईक स्वरांना आत टाकले. व रुग्णालयात घेऊन गेले. 

त्यांना नेल्यावर रस्त्यावर खूप रक्त सांडलेले दिसत होते. ते सर्व पाहून माझे मन विचलित झाले. मी या आधी कधीही असा अपघात पहिला नव्हता. ट्रॅक्टर वरील ड्रायव्हर वर बसलेला असल्याने त्याला जास्त मार बसला नाही. परंतु त्यालाही दवाखान्यात नेण्यात आले. मी थोडा वेळ तेथे थांबलो. आता माझी बाहेर गावी जाण्याची इच्छा पूर्णपणे नाहीशी झाली होती. मी गाडीवर बसलो व हळुवार बाईक चालवत तेथूनच घरी परतलो. 

घरी आल्यावर मी विचार करू लागलो की लोक एवढ्या वेगाने गाडी का चालवत असतील बरं... त्यांच्या एका चुकीमुळे संपूर्ण कुटुंबाला दुःख सहन करावे लागते. आता त्या तिन्ही व्यक्तींच्या घरातील आई-वडील, पत्नी-मुले किती शोक व्यक्त करीत असतील. या शिवाय आपल्या देशात दररोज किती अपघात होतात या अपघातांमध्ये अनेक लोक मृत्युमुखी पडतात, तर काही लोक कायमचे अपंग होतात. आपल्याला मिळालेले मनुष्य जीवन अतिशय अनमोल आहे. एकदा मिळालेले शरीर पुन्हा मिळत नाही. म्हणून आपण वाहतुकीचे नियम पाळून आपले व आपल्या कुटुंबाचे रक्षण करायला हवे. 

जर आपल्याला कोठे जायचे असेल तर नेहमी हळुवार गतीने वाहन चालवायला हवे. कारण आपल्या जीवनापेक्षा आवश्यक कोणतेही काम नसते. कधीही दारू पिऊन आणि नशा करून वाहने चालवू नये. नेहमी डाव्या बाजूने चालायला हवे. प्रत्येक नागरिकाचे कर्तव्य आहे की त्यानी वाहतुकीचे नियम पाळायला हवेत. याशिवाय भारत शासनाने देखील वाहतुकीचे नियम अधिक कठोर करायला हवेत. जेणेकरून कोणीही नियमांचे उल्लंघन करणार नाही.

सर्व कामकाज आणि उद्योग हे शहरात वाढत आहेत त्याप्रमाणे तेथील लोकसंख्याही दिवसेंदिवस वाढत आहे. गावाकडील लोक देखील शहरात स्थलांतरित होत आहेत. दळणवळण आणि प्रवासासाठी वाहनांची संख्या वाढली आहे. रस्त्यावरून फिरणे कठीण होऊन बसले आहे. रोज एक तरी बातमी अशी ऐकू येते की रस्त्यावरून चालताना एक व्यक्ती अपघाताने दगावला!

रस्त्यावरून चालणे अवघड झाले आहे. माणूस जवळचे अंतर असले तरी गाडीनेच फिरणे पसंत करतो. त्यामुळे गर्दी मात्र रस्त्यावर झालेली दिसते. मग रस्त्यावरून चालणाऱ्या माणसांना त्याचा त्रास होणारच की! रस्त्यावर वाहनांची सुरक्षासुद्धा त्यामुळे धोक्यात येऊ लागली आहे. व्यवस्थित आणि सुरक्षित रस्ता असताना देखील अपघात होतात तर रस्ता खराब असेल तर किती अपघात होत असतील, याचा अंदाज आपण लावू शकतो.
